Reviews of Papaya Tree

Popped in to this hidden Thai Resturant in the basement. Order several dishes along a starter selection and crispy chicken. Everything tasted fresh and full of flavour. The best dish was the crisp chicken. It was nice and crispy, chicken stay was very tender. Overall great experience. 😋

As a big fan of Thai food, this place pleasantly surprised me. The restaurant is hard to spot on High street Kensington, but if you go inside the food would definitely worth make it a visit. Great food, decent price, friendly staff and cozy vibes.

I've bumped into this restaurant by mistake and decided to give it a try. That was the right choice. The only ไทย restaurant in London with the authentic taste of Thailand in every dish. This is not a place where dishes are revised to accommodate western preferences and I truly appreciate that. Prices are fair for the location. Will definitely go again.

I popped in last Sunday - great tasting food and responsive service from the waiter who also happens to be the owner!
Beef Massaman curry was delicious, as was the Satay.
I'll be back next week!

Should have gone with my instincts on this and left instead of waiting for someone to come and seat me. However, after a few minutes a guy came out the kitchen and took me to a table. Only 3 others in use. Maybe one guy in the kitchen. Totally underwhelmed with my pork dumpling starter, not particularly flavoursome and whilst the centre was quite warm, the outside was not. Enjoyed the main course, and was thinking dessert but again waiting, this time for my place to be cleared, I decided against it. Quite bemused by the continuous procession of helmeted delivery riders. And therein lies the problem maybe. I felt more like a squatter in a takeaway rather than a diner. First time, last time. Disappointed.
B. K.
Very delicious food I enjoyed every bite of everything I had. The portion is too small if I didn't have generous serving of starter I don't think I would have been full with the main course.
W. L.
Despite the negative reviews, I feel that it is my obligation as someone who is aquainted with Asian cuisine to defend this place for serving some of the most authentic Thai flavours within this neighbourhood. Haven't ordered takeaway so I can't say for that part but eating in was a delightful and delicious experience. Portions are reasonable ...

Had a lovely time and the ambiance is super cozy and posh. We planned to eat at romulo cafe but they cannot accommodate us and looked for a different restaurant instead and found this Papaya tree.
The owner is very kind and recommended their nicest dish. Absolutely fantastic. The desserts were absolutely amazing. We had the chunky crispy bananas in honey and honeycomb vanilla italian ice cream and roti wedges which is crispy pancake in condensed milk paired with matcha ice cream that cleanses your palate. 😘
Value for money: 5 stars
Waiting time: none except when we ordered the desserts which took 10 to 15 mins before they served it but the waiting game is all worth it. 👌
So much better than the thai resto down in Southampton.

Given the scarcity of good Thai restaurants in Kensington I was eager to try the Papaya Tree, and it did not disappoint in the slightest.
The menu offered a various selection of very good-looking dishes -- commonplace Thai foods as well as regional specialities from different parts of Thailand. The fresh trout looked very appetizing but this being my first visit, I wanted to compare with what I knew so ordered more standard fare: the pad Thai with prawns and also a green curry with chicken.
Made with very fresh ingredients, the pad Thai was tasty, offering multiple levels of flavor in a stir fry that was neither oily nor greasy, as so many badly done versions of this dish can be. The prawns were meaty and also tasted very fresh.
Moving on to the green curry, I would say it is not the best that I have ever eaten but a very good attempt. As with the pad Thai, the curry was made with very fresh ingredients allowing the complexity of flavours to shine through. Topped with generous pieces of chicken plus very fresh green beans, bamboo shoots and peppers, the taste was good. The sauce I thought a little bland and compensating with extra spices, but overall it was a very good dish.
The owners have done a nice job creating a contemporary restaurant with classic Thai touches in a basement setting. Because it is downstairs there are no windows but good attention to the lighting, and a quiet, jazzy soundtrack creates an intimate yet comfortable space. It would be a nice place to take a date.
I give it a very solid four stars and will definitely be coming back again to try some of the other delicious looking items on the menu.

Ordered Pad Thai like I always do in Thai restaurants. It’s decent quality, nothing special, slightly better than if you buy from supermarket and microwave it. But £9 for it is not OK. Too much.
I feel like they overcharge because of location and monopoly.
J. T.
Came here for lunch, they have a very reasonable lunch menu. Staff was very nice. Got the Pad Thai because I wasn't feeling like trying anything new. Thought it was good. I'd come back to try some other dishes too!

Run by it's owner & wife, makes this restaurant special in terms of service & food. It's good ,authentic Thai food. They also do delivery. Tucked away in the basement, is why most people miss it.
P. M. K.
Love the food. Authentic Thai but a bit pricey these days. Use to go there quite often few years ago and the price was much worthier.
A. K. S. (.
Delicious soup, helpful staff. However, my second dish wasn't as good as I expected.
e. r.
Food was good. If you want it spicy but without the afterburner effect, ask for "mild"... Service was excellent and the place it nice and cozy. I'll be back!

Amazing true thai food. Run with a thai owner and not a central kitchen or a PE fund..
T. P.
Food was great and not too expensive. My selection tasted better than the recommended curry.
M. G.
Excellent food and service! If I lived here I would come every week! Delicious! Also quiet basement location is peaceful.
M. W.
Best green curry ever, delicious! Great ambient and very friendly atmosphere. Could not recommend more! Definiately will ne back.

I ordered my food for pickup and it was just as delicious as when I used to dine in there. The dumplings were beautiful and juicy. The dishes were perfectly seasoned hot and delicious.
K. H.
Service was very prompt. Sticky rice was like glue. Tom Yum soup lemon grass was woody so chewy bits. Green chicken curry was delicious. So overall mixed bag. Very expensive for what it was.
E. G.
Great service and location. The prices (we are for lunch) were reasonable when compared to other places in the area. The food was good but nothing too special. Not the best Thai food I've ever had but it was not bad either. 3 stars for food taste but 4 for service and food quality.
G. W.
Man I loved this place.
Great food - so flavourful and tasty.
Portion sizes spot on, really homely feel, don’t mind the Deliveroo drivers it’s still lush. Just understand they’re in the food business.
Will be back, hard to find like it.

The chef has changed a year ago so I have been told and now the food is much tastier than it used to be. The waiters are charming and very helpful. My only complaint is that the dishes are on the small side particularly at lunch time so one dish and one bowl of rice is not enough unless you are a very light eater.
M. A.
I initially passed this restaurant as its a little entrance at street level, but the restaurant itself is on the lower ground level....Glad I went in.
There are photos of the restaurant at the entrance so you get an idea of what it's like inside before you go downstairs.
The ambience was lovely, the waiter was absolutely excellent helping downstairs with my heavy bags, allowing me to charge my mobile and overall he was very attentive, friendly, servicd oriented and I couldn't ask for more :)
The food was really yummy, I absolutely loved the spring rolls. I also had sweet n sour king prawns they were ever so slightly undercooked, but I couldn't be bothered to have them done for an extra minute I was so hungry.
The flavours were lovely, the presentation great.
I would recommend going here definitely.
Slight con, I was at the bank near the glass mirror on the two person table against the wall and the wall had quite a few brown splash stains which was a bit off putting to see while eating as a lone diner, but otherwise I cant fault these guys.
Lovely restaurant generally and lovely people :)
t. m.
A hidden gem.
Follow the stairs down and you are confronted by a small but nicely organised restaurant with moderate decor.
The food is great if little bit price but you have to consider the location.
Try the spicy soup and the coconut curry.
highly recommend it if you fancy authentic Thai food.

I'm would love to say this place was great but unfortunately I found it to be very pricey for what you got. Flavour wise it was ok, but the portion sizes were very small. Also to add the 12.5% tip on automatically is rather steep. It says on the receipt "if you wish you can refuse" or something like that but then if they did it wouldmake the customer feel so awkward they will never do such a thing. Very clever. Cant say I'll be going back. I hope they sort the issues they do have out, otherwise it's just another Tourist Trap.
B. G.
The Penang Curry w/ shrimp was amazing! I will return! Waiting for my mango & sticky rice now—but I’m sure it’s going to be just as amazing! Music is great too! No wait and I love the staff—courteous and professional! Love this place!!!!
M. R.
Pleasant, clean, tidy and mellow jazz vocals as background on my visit. Food tasty. Kensington prices and 12.5% gratuities added automatically. I'd eaten a burger meal elsewhere 2 days before so this was a nice way to reset my digestive system.
H. B.
Although at first we were slightly put off by the fact that we were the only diners in the entire restaurant, I'm glad we stuck it out. Really decent thai food. Seemed really authentic and the price was really reasonable, especially the wine at £2.99 a glass! Service was quick. Only down side was the same four songs were on loop for the duration of our meal!
K. P. (.
This restaurant is downstairs behind an unassuming door. (It's labeled, but it's very easy to miss!) The tables and chairs are all covered with clothes the way many Thai restaurants do, and if it's not busy they're happy to sit 2 people at a table for 4 so you've got more space. If you ask for a lunch menu they're able to bring the food quickly, so you'll have plenty of time to eat & get back to the office on your lunch break! The staff here are very friendly, and the food is very good. I'll definitely be back here again!
Cost: £15 for two mains and two drinks for lunch before tip.
M. B.
Cozy little cellar restaurant. Lovely atmosphere, jazz played in the background. Very open, smiling waiter. Food tastes good. Not cheap but not too expensive. Thanks for dinner! :)
M. V.
Good quality Thai food, at a reasonable price. The lunch time menu lets you select a particular style of dish, and then the particular meat you'd like with it - chicken, pork, beef, duck, or prawns. The price varies by meat choice, from £8 to £10. They also have a great offer on drinks with 4 Changi beers for the price of 3.
I. T.
Very nice high street Thai. Food wS good and fresh with london/Thai decor inside. I like spicy food but some. Don't and individual dishes in our group. Seemed to vary enormously in heat from description of dish to strength of heat... So. Its worth enquiring what hit means on a particular dish. Thought food was good quality and lunch. Menu hood value at 8 quid a pop... A large carte on more extensive basis also available. Will. Definitely go back at lunchtime but good to be aware of for evenings too if you are local or visiting.
G. M.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by Papaya Tree. I recently came back from Thailand and the Prawn Green Curry tasted almost exactly the same as the real deal. The prices were also pretty good, bar the start to share, which was definitely a rip-off. It was over £20 and you probably get the same amount of food as you would with one main dish at under £10.
The reason I am docking a star is because they add a service charge, and I hate it when restaurants just add it. They also insisted we paid it when we wanted to not give a full tip.
A. M. (.
Although I live in the area, I hadn't heard of this restaurant until a recent date took me here. We had shared starter and then a selection of different dishes, the food was superb and the lady that served us was soo sweet and helpful. We were then joined by the owner, a glamourous and stunning woman, who got me a Baileys and we just chatted and had a few drinks before I left. The decor inside is neutral and modern, but the only thing that lets it down is that it's on the basement level, so you don't have any view of the outside, other than that, perfect location on High St Kensington.
R. V.
This is one of my favourite Thai restaurants. It's unfussy food served and presented well. Being vegetarian I found the staff very accommodating. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the vicinity. In fact I've traveled from High Wycombe specifically!
J. N.
Rather average food and below average portions. The tom kha gai soup was only a small bowl (usual rice bowl size) with a few morsels of chicken and one of each type of veg (one cherry tomato, one new potato, etc). The Massaman curry was OK (I've had better for the same price / less) but again small in portion. As was my partner's duck curry. 2 soups + 2 curries + 1 coconut rice = £54.
Overpriced for what you get in quantity and flavour / quality.
N. S.
Came unplanned, with little expectations, but the food was freshly made and delicious. For main had the Massaman Lamb Curry which was so tasty and succulent it blew my mind off!
P. D.
My personal favourite Thai restaurant and owned by a good friend of mines Sam. Have had many a great night with friends here and can highly recommend if your in the area.

Small cozy restaurant near Design Museum. People are very friendly and food was good. I had less cash and card machine was not working, still they managed to serve me without making any fuss about it. Would definitely visit again if I am around.
S. E.
Had the pad see ew. As an aussie who’s used to awesome Thai food, wasn’t expecting much (all my Thai experiences in Europe have been disappointing). Loved it. Admittedly only had one dish but def recommend the pad see ew at least!
S. K.
Good menu choice, good service. Down in the basement with no windows but still good atmosphere and a great place for lunch. Alcohol prices higher than expected for a restaurant of this class but I would go again.
J. B.
Genuine Thai food. Tasty and balanced spices.
Nice and lovely people serving.
C. G.
I'm was on a business trip here in london and I gotta say I got addicted to this thai restaurant! The food is delicious and spicy and was served with that famous 'Thai smile'. Make sure you try their choo chee fish, you won't regret it
Z. X.
Unimpressed with food however quiet environment. Very dark so suitable for a date but not when you chat with family members. Slightly overpriced for the quality
