Reviews of Sussex Bar & Restaurant
J. S.
Had beef wellington today. The dish is amazing, great meat. Nice sides. But the pricing is really confusing. It was stated in set menu as 38 £for 2 persons. We specifically asked if that was the final price. And where disappointed upon getting the nil which added extra £19 per person as main course from the set menu for the same dish. So the real price for wellington is £70 for 2 persons to share. And knowing this price from the start we might have considered different options.

The food was very tasty and the presentation was great. Extensive selection of wines and cocktails. Also, attentive and friendly staff.
I have ordered oysters which were very big in comparison to other places I’ve been. Beef tartare which was salty, flavourful and lamb shoulder which melted in my mouth.
Definitely recommend and will be coming back!

Conclusion - don't go if you're hungry! Sussex is nice, but at these prices you're better off heading to one of London's Michelin starred restaurants. There's the nearby Sabor, or BRAT and Lyle's in Shoreditch. All 3 feel reasonably priced by comparison.
Don't get me wrong, the environment is lovely, the staff are perfectly pleasant, and most of the flavours were nice. The gnocchi in particular stood out!
That said, the positive sentiment in the other reviews makes me begin to question the relative credibility of google maps ratings. Or perhaps it's simply that many of us Londoners have far too much spare change lying around and no longer understand the concept of good value for money. This is Michelin star pricing without the Michelin star food or service (that's not to berate the staff - as I mentioned above, they were perfectly nice).
We were in a rush so opted to share some oysters, a couple of starters and a main. I specifically asked about the size of the starters and was told they were "not as small as Tapas portions". Imagine my surprise when the monkfish carpaccio arrived. £12 for 9 slithers of fish - each roughly the size of an average basil leaf. It would be one thing if the flavours had blown my socks off, but they were actually a bit underwhelming.
The gnocchi (£9.50) was good, perhaps even great, but equally disappointing in size (probably 9-12 pieces). It's the kind of portions you'd expect from a 10 course tasting menu. I think Sussex could do a better job of setting expectations in that department.
The main (venison ragu) was a more reasonable in size and had lovely flavours, but at £24 it's almost 2x the price of the similar 8 hours beef shin ragu at Padella (a London pasta establishment). Not necessarily an apples with apples comparison I know, but these are the kind of comparisons you end up making when the price is greater, but the quality and flavour is seemingly not.

Very friendly staff and excellent food, just needed real napkins to make it exceptional!
A. M.
Excellent food. British with a twist. I had the most wonderful mussels with such an "closely kept secret" amazing sauce. Local produce from the family farm and winery. Informative staff who were there when needed. Fabulous place

Managed to get a last minute reservation on a trip to London, and had a brilliant time. Extensive and reasonably priced wine list, and a good selection of vegan/vegetarian options on the food menu. We had the squash gnocchi and pork terrine to start, followed by the hake and the pork loin with rotated cauliflower and potatoes as sides. Everything was delicious. We managed to squeeze in a cheeseboard and a glass of sherry before waddling back to our hotel. We'll definitely be coming back on another London trip.

The Gladwin Brothers did it again. The Shed in Notting Hill is one if my favourite restaurants in London and the Sussex’s opening made my favourite list longer. Food is inspired in British ingredients and recipes with a gourmet twist that made everything we tried interesting and delicious. Excellent, extensive wine list including very solid British options. Space is great for a dinner with both a large group of friends or a date. The scallops are an absolute must and the cassata too. Oh and the bread and butter... but everything was delicious, highly recommend!
B. L.
Verdict - would return: amazing value and tasty menu
Liked - maldon salt oysters with Noilly Prat, confit lamb shoulder
Disliked - rhubarb in crumble slightly tart but mostly balanced by custard
Other comments - fantastic food and a very pleasant surprise, must try!

New restaurant, nice bar staff and interesting menu! The food took a while to come out but we got 2 additional starters/snacks for the wait which was nice! The deer was the highlight for me, tender and full of flavour. A drink plus start/main came to over £40pp.

I went to the restaurant to celebrate Burn Night with a friend. The menu was fantastic and the reception was really great. They had gluten free and vegetarian options.

I could not recommend this place highly enough - this has been my favourite restaraunt experience in London to date! The food is fantastic, so creative and delicious - marmite?!?! Yum! I was really impressed with all our cocktails made by the staff! The service was top notch and the staff were so welcoming. This is a cosy restaraunt with great vibes and i can't wait to go back again!
G. R.
Amazing cocktails and service! This place is a real vibe. The staff lovely and make sure you have lots of fun. Shout out to Steve, Mika, Alejandro and David for making our night memorable 🍓🥂🍹🍸
D. M.
The place is absolutely fantastic and we had a very lovely evening.the food is super tasty and the service by Alejandro 💚 was amazing.can't wait to visit again

I have been to Rabbit and nutbourne restaurants that are owned by the same owners and Sussex does not disappoint. Incredible food, brilliant wine and a lovely ambience. The highlight of the food was the mallard wellington which was superb. The cheese board was also really cool as they bring out all the cheese for the customer to choose! Very high quality, local and seasonal food with staff that have real passion for food and great customer service. Will be back!!
S. H.
What a great find! We went pre-theatre, a party of four, and had the most delicious meal! Squash gnocchi with sage, venison ragu, and the Nutty Wild sparkling wine, all superb. And great service. Can't wait to try one of the others in the family

Good luck and thank you for the great service. I hope to make it the Friday night pay day treat from now on.
Sussex is an amazing British restaurant family owned getting there produce directly from the family farm in Sussex.
I got to met the owner who put alot of effort and attention to detail in what comes out his kitchen.
For starter I had the raw beef which was delicious, balancing sweet, sour, salty and umami in every bite.
For Main was the Pork with miso and hazelnut which was also delicious.
Finally for dessert I had the Sussex pond pudding said to be the "signature desert" it was elegant dish with warm and cool elements bring out a autumn and winter vibe.

So glad we stumbled across the Sussex, it is an absolute hidden gem…The atmosphere and decor is perfect for a few cocktails, highly recommend the rum made from banana peel!
S. T.
Amazing blend of delicious food, martinis, and service. Oysters were very fresh and set menu was great value - we ordered the lamb shoulder as main and the meat melts in your mouth. Highly recommend
E. W.
I came here because it was booked for me by a friend. I am a vegetarian coealiac so eating is a nightmare, and the base menu at this place does not at all cater to me (hence 4star not 5).
We decided to just have drinks (I had a summer spritz cocktail and it was LOVELY) whilst we looked for a more suitable place to eat.
A member of staff said he would talk to the chef and see what he could do. What happened next blew my mind.
The chef prepared 3 dishes for me that were GF and vegetarian, 1 was on the menu, 1 was substituting to cater to me, the third was ENTIRELY made up on the spot. The chef made me a variety of mushrooms and wild garlic with spring onion and asparagus. IT WAS INCREDIBLE.
If you’re considering coming here and you have dietary requirements, I would recommend speaking someone and seeing what can be done. Because my experience here is that a lot can be done! I had a brilliant time! I just wish the menu were a little bit more inclusive to begin with - when I came the ONLY vegetarian main dish had barley in the name!
G. M.
Had the most wonderful dinner here last week. Food is fabulous and they accommodated my dietary requirements with no issue. Staff are 10/10, incredibly attentive. Amazing British wine. Highly recommended.
L.
Overall, the experience didn't meet our expectations. The cuisine was creative, but starters from the set menu are not worth it. Service also has much room to improve.
I had lunch with two people there on a quiet day (when we arrive, only two other people were in). Our brown-haired waitress was not rude but not close to being likeable - she was not happy to serve us. Between the starter and the main, we also waited for very long and when we asked the waitress, she bluntly and simply answered they were on the way...
The cured chalk stream trout (starter) I took was very small and far different from the two pictures I've seen in the reviews here in terms of presentation - served in a tiny coupelle where you usually only serve side dishes e.g. olives or some sauce. I was disappointed. It was quite good however.
The lamb rust (main) was excellent ,perfectly cooked - would definitely recommend if you ever go there.
E. F.
Visited for lunch today, lovely seasonal British menu with a fantastic value lunch menu. Both dishes were amazing and a great selection of cocktails, wine and beers. Brilliant team as well. Highly recommend.
A. A.
Delicious British food and very friendly staff. We had a fabulous evening.
J. C.
Nice food, good service. Overall a very pleasant afternoon.

A lovely setting in Soho and sat outside on the patio. In Firth Street, closer to Soho Square, so slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Compton Street which is good and has a lovely ambience. Enjoyed a martini and a glass of wine. The table setting is perfect and very stylish. Friendly team and delicious food. Wow really was 10 out of 10: The burrata and trout starters were fantastic followed by the Sunday roasts - lamb and beef. Lots of roasties, extra gravy, greens - just perfect. What an amazing place to eat at. Highly recommend. Thank you everyone who works in the kitchen and front of house for a lovely lunch. Will be back for the oysters! Best place I have been to in Soho.

*Best food I've had in a very long time*
From the Marmite éclairs to the cured sea trout on vegetable cream with a crunchy topping and edible flowers, every dish was plated beautifully and tasted incredible. Such a fresh, inventive menu. Merlin the sommelier was brilliant and generous in recommending accompanying wines and cocktails. Both he and David the waiter/(maitre d?)were endlessly patient with our slightly rowdy outside table and couldn't do enough to keep us happy. Just go!
A. R.
We had an amazing evening here, the food was excellent, the service was fantastic(thank you Ryan and Petra) and there is lovely ambience to this place. Apologies if we were a little loud and boisterous. Thank you.
R. N.
Highly recommend. Perfect blend of excellent food, service, and atmosphere (at a fair price). Every single dish we tried (2 starters, 3 mains, 1 side, 2 desserts, oh and the fresh bread!) was just delicious. Think central London has been in need of a restaurant like this for some time. British cuisine at its best. Top quality food in an unpretentious environment. Incredible staff and a solid drinks menu. Will definitely be back.
T. O.
Really nice local produced products and food⭐️
I had really creamy oysters and beef tartare, brat cheese and beef Wellington and dessert, all very good 5 stars 🙌🏻
But I couldn’t have fish of the day as they finished 😭
But it was really great experience and now we have to keep this kind of beautiful British restaurant stay westend!!!
I will be back very soon for sure
Y. X.
Great appetisers and good wine list, main course less interesting
L. C. C.
Amazing dining experience. The Gladwin brothers are great hosts: the restaurants are always very charming, food is extraordinary and the overall experience cannot be better. Sussex is in line with their other restaurants. Oliver, the cook, is a great guy, if you're lucky he'll come to your table and explain you his vision about their restaurants and his food. I'd recommend every single dish in the menu. To me they offer some of the best food in town.
J. W.
I hate using the word 'fusion', but i don't know how else to describe a place that serves Italian dishes with an English approach. Regardless, the menu is refreshingly simple, with classic Italian anti-pasti, primi, segundi sections all represented. The dishes are each variations on Italian classics, all served with ingredients sourced from the restaurant's own farm.
Between the 4 of us at the table I think we tried about 80% of the dishes available - we were gluttonous - with each one both delicious and filling. The parfait special dessert was probably the best sweet course i've eaten this year.
The staff were incredibly friendly, knowledable and accommodating. I'd recommend this place for both couples and groups of friends looking to catch up over an enjoyable meal.
G. N.
I had a fantastic meal, a delicious Steak Tartare followed by choc pudding. The manager couldn't have been more helpful and most importantly the cocktails were brilliant
A. H.
The Gladwin Brothers restaurants have been my favourites for a while and couldn’t wait to come to Sussex - it certainly does not disappoint! I went for Sunday lunch (their first service) and had the wild mushroom wellington with all the delicious sides (Yorkshire’s and carrots were the best). (We couldn’t finish all the sides, had a starter and needed room for dessert!) Friendly service (a touch slow - possibly due to it being their first Sunday service) and food was all divine (especially the bread and smoked salt butter), as I’ve come to expect from all their restaurants. Absolutely beautiful restaurant too. I left very full and happy! I’ll be back- very soon (in less than 2 weeks to be precise!)
G. C.
Beautiful food in a great setting.
I had lunch last week on Friday and was blown away; incredible food, wonderful service, great atmosphere and my friends really enjoyed the wine (I wasn't drinking)
I had the beef tartare with the quail's egg to start and it was really scrummy. I'm a bit of a carnivore and this really went down well with me, I should emphasize that it is very light and incredibly well seasoned.
Then I had crab ravioli for my main - wow - so creamy and delicious, really satisfying and the bisque that it came with (I can't remember what it was but it was something unusual) was also really great.
Annoyingly the people I was with had to go early, so I didn't get to have dessert but I will definitely be coming back - so next time!
The bill was very good value for money - we were on the two course lunch menu - which was great.
J. F.
New trendy restaurant located in the middle of Soho! Booking is highly recommended if you don't want any disappointment! The food is really good, well executed and finely presented. Cocktails were quite decent too! I'd put a 5-star rating if the price wasn't that high but I strongly recommend the place if you don't mind putting the budget (above £50 per head for food and drinks).
J. G.
Delicious lunch at Sussex earlier today. The herring was a lovely cut of fish, the mushroom eclairs were bursting full of flavour and the gnocchi for main was a great veggie option and very moorish indeed with a wonderful sauce. Countryside dining in the heart of London, highly recommend.
S. F.
A wonderful evening dinner experience, with a well constructed seasonal menu. A must have are the mushroom eclairs and the Wellington both absolutely divine. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about what they are serving, looking forward to coming back with clients next week!
M. O.
We spontaneously tried Sussex on Saturday evening and we couldn't have been happier. Everything from the welcome, to the service and food was absolutely fantastic. The menu is really exceptional and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended. Well done.
S. F.
Had a fantastic meal with my family last Sunday. The food, atmosphere and service were all exceptional - without being fussy or overboard. They floored us all with the mushroom marmite eclairs and the house 'viennetta' was phenomenal. Thank you for a wonderful Sunday lunch!
A. H.
First time and I have eaten at one of the Gladwin Brothers' restaurants and I was not disappointed. We had three courses and all were absolutely delicious. The waiters were very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu too. I'll definitely be back!
S. L.
The beef wellington was a delight, lovely restaurant with friendly service, and great atmosphere.
R. M.
The Sussex is somewhere you MUST go.....from the minute we arrived we were impressed. We would like to thank all the staff but especially Brandon and Petra, an added bonus was when Chef came over and had a chat with us. The food was fantastic (cheeseboard was awesome) the surroundings and the atmosphere were spot on. If they continue the way they’re going then the Sussex will definitely be around for many years to come. We had a really great evening and we’ll be back very soon I’m sure.
D. J.
Stunning lunch for an extraordinarily good price. This menu - and the chef - are inventive and creative with an unashamed nod to the countryside and the seasons. Partridge saltimbocca was stunning, crab ravioli memorable and their take on viennata a perfect end to one of our best meals of the year
M. B.
What an awesome dining experience! Wellington is a dream and the Sussex pond pudding is unmissable! Lots of space and great atmosphere with charming FoH team. Would highly recommend!
E. H.
I had an amazing lunch on Saturday, it really was a taste sensation! It is refreshing to see British seasonal food being served from the local countryside in the heart of Soho. Would highly recommend.
D. M.
Fantastic lunch. Brilliant wines. Staff are fabulous and the food is great. A brilliant Soho hit 👍
A. S.
One of the best meals I ever had! Bravo, top chef 👏 😋👍
R. M.
I popped into Sussex recently for a couple of drinks and some snacks, and have decided I need to come back for all 3 courses as soon as possible!
The cocktails were expertly mixed with great service, I had a Dark N Stormy as well as some of the Sussex Blonde beer on tap. Must haves on the food front included the volcano bread with smoked butter, the mushroom marmite eclairs and the biltong made with Sussex beef.
The place was packed on a Thursday night so I would recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment - I will be back!
P. S.
Sussex is a truly exceptional restaurant with an inventive and mouthwatering menu -we had dinner there recently and enjoyed the buzzy atmosphere the friendly staff and the amazing food -particularly the duck Wellington shared for two-perfection from the outside in !
We can’t wait to visit again.
R. C.
Great little brasserie and oyster bar. Good cuts of meat and seafood, well cooked British style
L. S.
We went for the wellingtons which are a must. All the products were very good. The team is very friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. I will definitely recommend to have a great time with friends or family.
J. W.
A great spot for post-lockdown dining on the closed streets of Soho. Top food and staff. Make sure to book because it's busy!
H. W.
Fantastic little place serving contemporary European cuisine, very much English inspired as their name suggests, I absolutely loved their pork combined with their roast potatoes.
M. D.
We have eaten here this evening and it was DELICIOUS! We came here by chance and will definitely come back! Incredibly fine. We loved it, the Belgians food amateurs.
N. A.
Stunning food, great service, fair prices, handsome furniture (finally a table that doesn't wobble). Far too many let downs in London peddling style over substance - this ain't one. Thank you.
H. D. S.
Very good food and friendly service. Defenetly visiting again!
S. T.
Great meal, lovely staff. So nice to find such honest, well executed food with an intense sense of provenance in the middle of Soho... Hitting up that chefs table asap!

If it's anything like the gladwin bros other restaurants then this place will be a winner. Ollie is the best young chef in UK in my humble opinion. 👍
A. R.
Amazing food, atmosphere and service. It was an excellent night out. Special thanks to Brandon for taking care of us. Highly recommended.

Had a really great Sunday lunch here, 3 courses was really good value for the quality. Nice staff too.

Fantastic restaurant with friendly and professional staff. We dined on oysters, fried Brussels sprouts and burrata salad to start, then moved onto the fish and steak. Everything was super delicious. The stone bass came with the most delectable sauce (mussel perhaps?) but we had to order some bread, absolutely could not leave any, it was that good. Service was super attentive and fun - thanks Christina - which really made it special. Wine is available by the carafe if you all fancy something different - and the bill was a pleasant surprise at the end - great value for a top notch dining experience. We'll be back for sure!!
