Reviews of Tai Won Mein
K. I. D.
I used to come here over 15 years a go during college so my friends and I thought we'd visit again today. To our surprise food was still just as good. Large portions and very good prices. Love the freshly squeezed juices, ho fun rice noodle dishes and the deep fried calamari and salt and pepper tofu really good too.
The décor looks exactly as it did since it has been opened, very clean with screen dividers to separate tables.
One thing to note is that this restaurant accepts cash only. But there is a cash point just outside towards the DLR station.
I would definitely come here again when I'm craving a value for money Chinese meal.
J. O.
Straight off the bat, this isn’t fine dining. It’s noisy, it’s fast, service is generally great but can be hit & miss, but the food is always first rate. Been coming here for years and the fact that it’s still here and I’m still coming says it all. Love Tai Won Mein!
A. C.
If you are around Greenwich and you are looking for Chinese food this is the place to go, a couple of things to keep in mind before going.
They only take cash and they will charge 50p extra if you want to take your leftovers with you, for me, this is pretty unusual but if that is not a problem for you don't think twice.
We ordered:
Amazing pork Dumplings. Good size and the come with their sauce.
Vegetable mix noodles. Enormous size and if you are vegan this is perfect because they ask you if you want it with egg or not.
Pork and Duck noodles, amazing flavor as well and the size is incredible.
In conclusion, if you want a lot of food at a good price and have cash come here.
A. L.
Canteen-style seating, cash only, but good value for money and quick service. Decent sized servings of fresh tasty food that doesn't leave you with an MSG-hangover.
J. L. N.
Copious amounts of tasty food. Freshly squeezed fruit juices available. The starters are large so consider ordering to share. Prices are reasonable but it’s cash only which you only discover at the payment station and there is no bill brought to the table to check what you are charged for! Good for a quick filling meal at a fair price.
S.
Delicious food! Ordered the Singaporean fried rice and it tasted absolutely amazing. Very generous sized portions, and priced surprisingly well when considering other local Greenwich restaurants and fast foods.
Would definitely recommend trying out Tai Won Mein Greenwich.
S. B.
I use to love this place. The noodles is greasy and the new staff aren't too friendly. Don't buy any drinks here because it's overpriced and watered down. Even the water they definitely get out of a tap and fill up Evian bottles. If you buy starters and mains they don't even bring out the starters first then the mains after. The food comes out really quick even if they are busy. Anyway place is nice.
M. D.
Huge portions of amazing veg noodles for a reasonable price, what more can you wish for?
A. P.
This place is cheap and cheerful. Better than I was expecting considering some reviews. Big portions, lots of options, diner style, fast service. Have been satisfied every time I've eaten here. Decent amount seafood/meat in the noodles. Nothing fancy.
Update: They recently put their prices up about 60p per dish
C. L.
Cheap but not Cheerful!
I have eaten here for years. Initially, the food was absolutely amazing. Recently, however, I've noticed the portion sizes are getting smaller and my fave dish ( fried seafood noodles ) appears to have less seafood!
That said, it's still a great bargain for tasty Chinese food slap bang in the centre of Greenwich.
We bagged a comfy seat and our food arrived promptly. My meal was delicious, as usual.
Decor is basic, staff customer service zero- but, hey! I don't care for that price. They weren't rude, just not particularly engaged with their customers.
If you want a no- frills experience, but good value, tasty Chinese food then Tai Won Mein is the place for you!
A. S.
This is an amazing location and friendly service. Prices are very reasonable. Cash only is slightly annoying, but there's an ATM machine next door. Food could be slightly better, but for the price it's reasonable quality. Cheap and cheerful!
a. e.
I had a late lunch there recently. The spicy chicken ho fun was filling and tasty. The food with a pot of Chinese tea came under a tenner. Good value!
H. Z.
Great Chinese food restaurant. Very good portions for the price. Fried noodles could be a bit oily, but definitely very delicious. Spare ribs starter is very nice if you're feeling hungry. Noodle soup is very delicious and less oily.
D. C.
Beautiful food at very affordable prices. Top tip: you only need one dish to fill you up!
H. S. (.
Being a student at the University of Greenwich, I would find myself at this place almost everyday for lunch. Great food for the price they charge which is why I give it a 4/5. However the only thing that lets me down is the way the staff treat customers as some of the ladies there are quite rude. Furthermore, the store only accepts cash which is a letdown especially for the area they are set up in. Apart from that, the food is delicious :)
H. B.
Great value for money, huge positions and tasty!

Great potion size and nice tasting food.
Had the pork and duck ho fun and it was delicious.
Also had some tea, spring roles and prawn crackers all was pretty good for the price.
It was really busy with a good atmosphere.
When youre seated you might be sat on the same table as strangers.
V.
This place was recommended to me and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm usually disappointed by portion sizes, but I can honestly say I wasn't this time. The only let down was the size of the spring rolls. They cost around £5 and were the tiniest spring rolls I'd ever seen. Honestly apart from that, I really enjoyed the food and the service was good. No complaints, except for the spring rolls ofcause. It was an relaxing atmosphere and I enjoyed looking out the window watching the world go by. I will go back again.
J. K.
Food was pretty good, little oily and greasy but definitely worth the money. I wonder if they really have to stick to cash only despite coronavirus though. There was no hand sanitiser in each table and you are not asked to give info for contact tracing. Staff were wearing face coverings though.
K. O.
CASH ONLY
Super cheap and tasty food! Do not order a plate each, they are so huge you will not be able to finish it all! Alternatively take your own empty containers and eat your leftovers the next day- a plate from here is basically two and a half takeaway containers worth. They sell containers for 50p if you forget your own! If you go with someone you could easily share a plate and a side and both be very full after
C. H.
The portion was large as usual. The food was okay and the service was also a bit bad as usual. We will be back next time when we are hungry for big portion.
H. C.
The food tastes amazing even though I get the same thing each time soon shall venture lol I ordered sweet and sour chicken no veg just pineapple that came correct which would usually come with egg Fried rice/noodles but this time my noodles came and were like the packet noodles Indomie and that's not exactly what I had in mind when I placed my order tbh it was definitely enjoyable to eat, just would have preferred my usual
M. I.
I visited based on a recommendation from a friend. It's a popular casual restaurant and was busy when we visited on Saturday. But our food was still served quickly and was hot. My chicken and black bean noodles were nice and portion size was very large. Chinese Tea was also served in a pot, both were enough for 2 to share..
J. P.
Great food and very well priced. Food is always hot and fresh. Lovely choice of dishes. Best place to eat if you find yourself on the wrong side of the Thames (The South Side). You might have to share a table during busy times, but it's worth it for the food. Service is fast, even during peak times, so it's perfect if you havnt got much time to spare. Portions are big enough to feed you and a small army, so you will not leave disappointed or hungry. 5 Stars
D. J.
Happy to support a cash only business. Great food, swift service.
M. S.
Always give big portions. Quick service, always busy. Only downside is cash only and limited toilet facilities
T. T.
This is a regular visit when in town. Definitely do noodles instead of rice (not that rice was bad, but noodles are better). Great food, decently priced, but cash only.
Л. В.
Went here with Taiwanese friends from Helsinki exchange and we were not disappointed!
C. O.
The food here is very good and plenty of it, the service was excellent too 👌
E. K.
Nice Chinese restaurant in Greenwich. Food comes out fast. Taste is a couple notches below authentic but not bad in any means. Great for a group after a night out.
D. Z.
Can’t speak for everything in the menu, but I always come back for the beef or king prawns noodles with black bean sauce and the calamari. Great value for money, portions are massive so great to share or take away!
K. A.
Their food always tastes good and is prepared in a timely manner.
Their pineapple fritters are to die for
A. E.
Food is always good and in large quantities for a good price. However the staff could not be more unfriendly if they tried, they seem to treat their customers with contempt!
A. P.
Love this place - always tasty, always fresh and always cheap! Have been going for the past 4 years and still remains my favourite noodle shop in London. Specially recommend Ho Fun and Fried Udon dishes. They are open now for take away and eat in - same great prices and food!
D. U.
We have been going to Tai Won Mein Greenwich for many years. My two teens would not settle going anywhere else for Chinese. The staff are extremely efficient there and portions are very generous. So we were disappointed when we couldn’t dine in regularly during the lockdown. Now that it’s open again we can have our favourite dishes which has always been salt and pepper squids, spareribs, sweet and sour chicken with rice, mixed meat with udon, Singapore vermicelli and beef in black bean sauce.
C. N.
Efficient service. Food portions are large and fulfilling. We tend to order sweet and sour chicken dishes and black bean sauce dishes. Really great. You really have to remember to bring cash here. They do not accept card.
E. -. S. Y.
Been going here on and off for years. Used to live on the same road when I was in my 20s and still visiting in my 40s. Guess that's a good enough advertisement. Always good, efficient service. Generous portions and reasonably priced. Always pop in when we are in Greenwich.
J.
Fairly basic canteen style restaurant, but very good value. I tried the won ton soup, ho fun noodles and Chinese tea.
The staff were polite and efficient, the portion was generous, and the meal was tasty, although I've had better in more expensive restaurants. But for just over £10 (not including the tip), I left the restaurant feeling replete.
Perfect for a quick and filling Chinese meal after work or shopping.
G. A.
Really good food and size, but lacks kind staff
T.
It's cheap, reasonably cheerful and the plates are massive. The food is excellent. One can always tell if the restaurant is good because of the number of local Chinese residents who use it. Cost? 4 massive plates of food 2 sides and 3 soft drinks for £37. Excellent value
P. D.
The food is always great and the portion sizes are very generous. Even at the busiest of times you can always get a seat and the service is very quick. Great if you're in a hurry or desperately hungry. The only negative to mention is that service is rarely with a smile.
J. S.
easy option to have some noodles and catch up with friends. I like the portion sizes. Quality of protein was below average I'm afraid. They could also be more generous with the seasoning.
林.
Biggest portion ever in London. Very good quality as well. Definitely will go again.
M. J.
Service is a bit odd I must say. My friend and I went on a Saturday afternoon which is usually a manic day for all restaurants which I'm aware of as I've been in their position before. However as we were ordering the employee taking our order was constantly screaming to the back of the restaurant to her colleague. Fair enough my girl needs to be heard. Food comes in huge portions and at a very great price. Also the waiting time was good since we got the food after only 10 minutes. I have to admit the food was not the greatest. The drinks are quite pricey too.
K. D.
So tasty! And you know what? You'll get overloaded plate of food that you won't be able to eat everything. Recommend!
V. C.
If you go to Greenwich Maritime, you can't miss it! My favourite noodle's house in London. Big portion, nice food. No "customer service" available though, they just want you to eat and live the space for the next one. Lol. Still, l go there because I like the food
M. L.
One of my favourite local places to eat. I've been here loads of times over the years, so I have got used of all of the bad things. It took me a bit of time to get used of the menu, I prefer the soups as they are healthier, but normally I see other customers go for the greasy and unhealthy food. Everything is a large portion (as a meal on a plate or bowl), except things like appetizers. I have been served burnt black food during busy periods, but the cook gets it right the second time after I have complained. I never order drinks, such as cola because normally it has lost it fizz. Staff are nice, but you need to understand them, and how the restaurant works, for example, if the menu is placed at the side, it signals the waiters you have ordered. It is relatively cheap and cheerful, and rather loud during busy periods.
J. n.
Good prices, great soup and dumplings!
M.
Been coming here for years and love to get the noodles with Pork and Beef. Yum yum.
Y. G.
2020 update: Squid still great. Dishes now £8-9. Cash only
2012. Big plates of tasty noodles for not much money (£4-5). Open till 11.30pm, so a good option when all else closed. Highly recommend the deep fried squid starter.
D. L.
Staff was friendly especially the laughing lady and food was amazing. Great experience, would definitely go back and recommend to friends and family.
J. C. Y.
Good place for soup noodles! Good value and the soup tasted amazing, reminds me of home! Staff are lovely and follow carefully with the COVID policy! Taste better than how it looks.
A. M.
A great place with fantastic food. I'm nicely surprised with this place. Had a visit wit ha friends of mine and everything was really good. To start off I can say that the atmosphere in the restaurant is pretty nice, not to noisy, not to quiet. The service is nice and fast and the food is really well cooked. Then again the surprising part of all this was the price of the food and the drinks which was fairly low. I'll surely come back to this place and recommend it to my friends.
M. D.
Another good place to eat in Greenwich.
A. C.
This place holds such a dear place in my heart, and does feel authentically Chinese - huge portions of noodles, rice and soup, and big personalities in the familiar waiters to match, all for next to nothing. For me, this is the charm of the place, and I used to frequent this little gem on a weekly basis. Sit in if you can, the portion sizes are somewhat bigger than when they try to stuff it into those little takeaway containers. Whenever I am near Greenwich I always end up plumping for this place to eat, and it never fails to disappoint.
K. a. K.
Dope spot for a good quality quick meal. I be known this place for ages now. Never got disappointed. Won Ton soup and Black Bean Chicken are just great. Huge portions for >£7. Now looking better after refurbishment.
A. P.
Great place for big eats at reasonable prices, reminiscent of a street restaurant. You will be told where to sit and don't be surprised if you're elbow to elbow with complete strangers. Everything about this place is about getting food out as quick as possible: the staff are terse without being actively rude (usually) and there are some bits of the menu worth avoiding, as some other reviews have made abundantly clear. Would recommend fried or soup noodles, roast meat on rice, and the fried squid for good flavours.
A. M.
Amazing Soup....expected with no taste but actually exploding with it! It's all with a very reasonable price! Takes long for your order to come because of the busyness but worth the wait! Make sure not to order in bulk because the quantity is very large. 4* from me and my family!
R. W.
Generously portioned servings with decent customer service. Didn’t have to wait long for your order. Payment by cash only and the prices are very reasonable.
S. g.
friendly and fast service, huge portions and always fresh. The Singapore udon noodles are to die for. By far my favourite noodle house in London
V. P.
Bit of a queue due to the "eat out to help out" but once seated service has been incredibly fast :) Food is delicious, amazing prices and big portions! Absolutely recommended
S. B. S.
Really good food but the staff is really really reluctant to offer you sauce, tissue papers and the most disappointing thing is they serve pretending they did not listen to what you said to them.
Also, are they doing legal business saying only cash is accepted?
Overall good food.
J. T.
The best fried noodle in London. Try their deep-fried chicken wings and roast pork. This is a long-established non pretentious chinese restaurant. It’s been our favourite since 18 years ago.
E. A.
Favourite for over ten years. Cheap and cheerful type of Chinese. Ho Fun with Roast Pork and Duck is my favourite. Food is greasy and probably not healthy as a regular meal.
R. R.
I have been here easily 3-4 times in my 4 week stay in London. Tried different items in the menu and everything was tasty. Not sure if its healthy but tasty yummy food. The best part is the portion and the cost. VFM for students !!
R. E.
I've been coming here for ten years and I love it everytime! The portions are huge (you may want to share) and it's a decent price. Everything is delicious. Service is fast and the bathrooms are clean. Just note that it is cash only but there is a cash machine outside TSB around the corner.
n. s.
The food is absolutely delicious, I come there very often however, the service is an absolute turn off. No interest in a customer whatsoever. Always have a feeling as if customers bother them. Also servers don't speak much English. But the food is great.
T. L.
I love this place. Have been going since I was a poor uni student and still go now. Large portion sizes. Good value for money. Tasty and authentic. Usually quick service. Staff are efficient. Not rude.
S. S.
We go on a semi regular basis and have done for years. The staff are always friendly and helpful, it's generally always busy but does get a bit manic at times which obviously increases the amount of time you wait for your food.
The food is good with good sized portions (It's why we keep going back)
A. A.
Service is poor but food is good and portion is big.
No card machine available
3 stars as last time they made me to wait for an hour for my food.
L. V.
This used to be a weekly haunt and is still my favourite place for Chinese food in London. The portions are huge and nothing tastes artificial. The staff are all really efficient and super friendly and it's a great place if you want to sit with friends or just grab a takeaway. LOVE the duck noodles #Tube-tastic
G. W.
Cheap and cheerful noodle bar. Service and decor somewhat lacking, but the food is good and the portions are huge! For a fiver you can get a plate of noodles or rice enough to easily feed two people.
G. V.
I love this place. Eating here was amazing. Food and price are perfect, also portions are very big. I always try to go there to eat when I can.
L. C.
Nicely situated next to the DLR, serving quick and big portions of food. Not many vegan nor vegetarian options as everything seems to contain flesh or eggs. Though the options available are good. My recommendation would be noodles (without egg) with mixed vegetables (under 10£)
Also they don't accept card, you need to pay by cash but there is a cash point just around the corner!
D. M.
I last came here around 5 years ago and proclaimed the food incredible and the service gruff. Came back today with extended family and a had a great meal with smily service. I don't eat anywhere else in Greenwich! Portions huge, price extremely reasonable for the location.
D. &. S.
We wnat back because we had a had lovely lunch and this time we chose a soup: don't. itso lovely to look at, but it tastes nothing. We tried both chicken and vegetables and they were a no no. The rest was very good. No credit cards, you will need cash.
P. M.
Tasty food, light and healthy, quick and pleasant service and GREAT value. Massive bowl of Ho Fun soup with seafood just £8.50!
B. S.
We come here regularly and have done for years. Service is fast and efficient, price is very competitive. Decor is basic but fine, and the location is great for an afternoon or evening in Greenwich. Long may they continue.
h. m.
Quality food at a reasonable price. Portions are so big you’d think they were for two people.
I regularly share a main and a side if I’m going with someone else
M. D.
My new home for cheap and cheerful noodles in Greenwich. Huge portions with a decent taste; but feeling cleaner, fresher and little more loved than some similar nearby establishments.
J. B.
Huge portions, great flavour and cheap. Don't come here if your are expecting high restaurant quality, that isn't what this is - this is the place you come if you are really hungry and want something that just tastes nice and you don't care what it is really made from :)
D. O.
We always drop in here when we are in Greenwich. Service is quick and it's a popular place. We love the noodle soups. Cash only but ATM next door.
t. y. x.
Cosy restaurant to enjoy authentic chinese cuisine. Price is alright too, generous portions.
Orderd the "Singapore" Fried rice, tasted delicious but i fail to see what's Singaporean about it😂.
Oh and this place only accepts cash. No cards.
L. B.
Decent food for a great price in generous portions. Good place to get a filling meal on a budget. Recommended especially for students.
J. P.
This seems to have become one of my wifes favorite local noodle snacking places.
The food is good for a fast food noodle restauant, and they sell beer which is a plus in my books.
The staff are fast and effient but I would not say friendly, but rushing about in this very popular establishment they are probably exhausted and a smile is too much.
Another reason it is popular is that it is cheap, which in Greenwich town centre is a rarity.
T. C.
Cheap and cheerful and good. Perfect as long you want a huge plate of tasty noodles and you don't care about being fawned over by the staff (all of whom are, encouragingly, Cantonese).
B. A. O.
I wanted a blast of Chinese food and I got exactly what I wanted. Huge portions serves fast. Squid nicely cooked. Good prices. Excellent.
M. H.
I love this place! Consistently good quality food, plenty of it, low prices and no frills. Have tea rather than beer.
S. C.
Cheap, large dishes with quick service, a regular "One-dish wonder" place I frequent when in the mood for simple Chinese food. Really can't go wrong with most dishes, just don't expect Michelin star quality!
F. T.
Hey from Germany,
I was in this Chinese Restaraunt. They gave me a big portion of ther chinese food for 1.80. It was to much for three person. And it was very good, better then all Chinese food in Germany but China Town in London is a bit better with all you can eat menu. But in Greenwich this is the best Restaurant of Chinese food.
Don't go to Starbucks above the street :D
A. K.
From my student days it is my favourite chinese restaurant. It may not be the high end restaurant but its food is great. Service is also good. I had my two birthday lunch here and had a great laugh at a daft woman at this very restaurant ! I still visit this restaurant whenever I am in London.
R. B.
Terrific value in centre of Greenwich. Eaten here regularly for over 20 years. Busy with students, tourists and locals. Refreshingly, cash only.
J. S.
Great food and excellent portions (you probably won't finish and will have to takeaway). Customer service isn't great, staff are always a bit rushed since it's always busy.
C. W.
Very good and cheap Chinese food. Portions are huge! Easily enough to get 2 dishes between 3. Staff are pretty blunt though
Y. T.
This is like the Chinese equivalent of a "greasy spoon", a cha chaan teng. This means that whilst it doesn't look like much, the service is fast, and the food is cheap and tasty. This also means that it's exceedingly busy and you feel like you ought to hurry up and clear out to let someone else in.
I had the Chinese roast pork and roast duck noodle soup, which were tasty but pretty much standard fare. Oh yes, they'd kindly de-boned the duck in advance, you don't see that too often. My dining partner had won tons in ho fun noodle soup, not being the expert with Chinese dining that I am, he had a little trouble negotiating the ho fun, but apparently the flavour was good. I nicked a wonton (just to taste) and found the filling tasty, although the pastry wrapping had disintegrated around the meat leaving a clump of pastry at the join that ended up being overly thick and chewy.
Of particular note is the freshly squeezed fruit juice, delicious. Overall, very tasty and reasonably priced, so it's highly recommended.
J. G.
Personally, my favourite Chinese restaurant in London. My family and I have been coming to this place for the part 15+ years, wouldn't go anywhere else!
P. B.
Tasty food, big portions and reasonable prices. Sadly service isn't that good. I was served soup and a main course at the same time.
C. P.
Their chicken black bean with rice is actually quite good for a really good price. The restaurant could do a bit 'deep cleaning' thou and the toilet needs maintenance please.
R. N.
Regularly visit here, quick service and big portions
G. A.
Great food at very affordable prices. Normally is very crowded. I personally love the Singapore style fried rice, very tasty
D. R.
Such a tasteless massive portion food... I love Chinese food and am used to their terrible customer service but this place is totally awkward place to be .. my order arrived in the table in 2-3 minutes after ordering meaning food was prepared already and I guess they must have just microwaved for a minute and given.. tasted so pale and such a big portion size that me and my bf couldn’t finish the food at all and I literally felt guilty for throwing so much of food.. I felt uncomfortable in my tummy after an hr and the next day...
I definitely am not going to this restaurant ever again...
bad customer service, pale tasting food and to top that up we have to throw the food..
I would prefer tasty and smaller portion rather then tasteless big big sized food ...
K. T.
Cheap and cheerful Chinese food and for £5-6 you get a big portion. Can get very busy during certain times and be carful if you want to take away left overs as a take away box will cost you 50p!
P. C.
We have been there couples of times in last 2 years, with friends and family, every each time that was great time. Good food, original atmosphere. Huge portions
A. F.
My favourite Chinese restaurant in town. Their food is always spot on. Very fresh and tasty.
A. H.
Food is tasty but slightly oily.
The service is very fast and efficient.
Portion sizes are very big and is good value for money.
Recommended for take away!
S. H.
The food is decent, and the size of the plates are really good! Not much more to say, the food did get a bit boring, and very dry
C. T.
Great value. The food is decent and the portions are massive. We could easily have one starter and one main to feed two people.
R. S.
Good prices, you get loads for your money. Food served quickly. This place is all about serving as many people as quick as possible so don't expect world class service.
m. m.
Good until they start cleaning whilst you eat and the filthy mop is touches your feet
P. G.
Bring your appetite. A stone's throw from Cutty Sark DLR station, Tai Won Mein serves up large plates of reasonable Chinese food for around £4.50. Seating is bench style with suited businessmen, students and construction workers crammed together during busy lunchtimes, each enjoying fried noodles, curries, giant soup bowls and roasted meats - you would have a hard time leaving here hungry. Of particular note are the great freshly squeezed fruit juices made to order. My other personal favourite is the giant chicken satay with peanut dipping sauce. A regular haunt for my work colleagues and I.
M. P.
Tasteful ho fun noddles
C. R.
Nice food great service and fantastic portions. I recommend the garlic and pepper prawns. They melt in your mouth.... Mmmmmm
B. K.
Eaten at a lot of Chinese restaurants in this area and this one is the best one so far.
W. M. J.
Very clean and tasty...don't expect smiles from staff, just appreciate good food
D. N.
This is the place you go when you are hungry. Their dishes are in big portions. Canteen seating plan and food was tasty. But every little thing costs extra, e.g. chilli oil.
P. Y.
Recommended Chinese restaurant / noodle house in Greenwich. Giant platters are serving with affordable price. Tasty dishes.

(Translated) Abundant and very rich dishes! Employee attention stands out for its kindness. In addition, it is clean and the food does not take long to arrive. I would eat there at any time. I chose the mixed chau mein, I loved it, they are portions that can be shared but after a day of walking, they come great to recover energy! Very recommended!
