Reviews of The Canvas: Cafe & Creative Venue
J. A.
Truly amazing. So far my favorite cafe in London. Great people, food, vibe. I can especially recommend their fig torte. The pancakes are also good, but could be a bit fluffier. Soup of the day (spiced pumpkin) was perfect. They also have events sometimes which I hope I will be able to check out in the future. Lastly, they incentives visitors to pay forward meals for less fortunate, which I think is pretty great.

We came for dinner at 7pm on a Friday night and really enjoyed it. The menu is limited at that time, they only have the specials and the “cheese” boards but we were taken aback by how yummy the food was! We chose the vegan calamari which tasted exactly like the real deal! The thick cut chips were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. The homemade lemonade was incredibly refreshing. Overall a really great experience. Love how they supply their coffee from redemption roasters, all their suppliers are social enterprises and they also do a food bank. A really great community cafe.
S. L.
An absolute gem of a cafe with the nicest atmosphere, kindest staff and tastiest food. Eveything is vegan and delicious, the coffee is really really nice, and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. One of my favorite cafes I've ever been to!
O. H.
a beautiful cafe with such a good heart. The food is amazing, the staff are absolutely lovely and the whole concept is so well thought out. Canvas use their space to provide support and opportunities to local businesses and the local population. Love the ‘pay it forward’ concept whereby you can buy a meal for someone who cannot afford it.
A. Y.
Such a lovely Cafe! Found it by accident. The taste of the salad was amazing! How can salad taste so good? The coffee, turmeric latte and cake was also Amazing. I love the idea of painting the walls, the questions on the walls were so cute. Downstairs was like a living room, very cozy and nice. The staff was very friendly. This will be my favourite little Cafe in town. Thank you for being 100% vegan, creative and social. Wish you all the best.
A. D.
Fantastic ambience and experience. I had the delicious scrambled tofu , turmeric latte, Arancini and americano black .. had lots of stuff to read but instead ended up reading the walls and reflecting about the written messages ..such beautiful thoughts penned by so many different people under different sections .. one can’t leave the place without feeling richer and happier for the whole experience .. extremely good service too ...and yes, vegan too
N. P.
Found this place by accident and I am glad I did. Decided to take a punt and ended up going for the vegan full english. Delicious! Everything was hot and tasted nice.
The staff are very friendly and this place only accepts card.
The cakes looked divine, however, as I was stuffed from the breakfast I had no space for cake. For sure I will be back!
E. R.
Following my previous review.... I must mention that it is worth reading up on the cafés story and concept. Also make sure you read the brochure listing out the ladies that cook in this pop up project and their stories. Oh, and once again, the food was fantastic!
I. K.
Wonderful inspiring place supporting the local community and serving ace food.
E. R.
My partner and I were invited by friends to an Ethiopian dinner at this tiny yet charming cafe. Our hostess Julia was amazing. If you live/work/visit London Spitalfields, please support this community project. Chef Woin Tegegn serviced delious vegan food. Julia agreed to turn the music down on my request. Service was prompt, polite and charming. One of our guests was puzzled as to why his platter didn't arrive. Staff quickly apologised and served him soon. Nice tea and fizz. The downside? Went to wash my hands and found the loo floor cluttered with tissues and laminated notices. People who walk through the cafe and enter the back area where the creative space is in, slam the door so loud and also open it with a firm push so the person sat next to the door gets startled. That was me! Music eventually got louder but I didn't mind as we had just finished our meal and were getting ready to leave. Overall it was a quirky and interesting experience. They've done the best they could with the limited amount of space. Music needs to be low. In a tiny venue loud music means patrons need to shout in order to be heard. A laid back and relaxed feel is best with soft music. The star of the evening was the food. I have never tasted such amazing Ethiopian food in London. Small portions but chew slowly, savour it and enjoy the experience!
L.
10/10 vegan delicious food, cool concept, ok prices and non-profit! Nothing to complain about. Order the jackfruit burger if you're into spicy and meat taste!! delicious cake, too. Came two times whilst I visited for a festival.
J.
Nice little vegan cafe in the heart of Shoreditch, on Brick Lane. Naturally has a lot of milk alternatives: soy, Almond, Oat and coconut I believe, as well as Matcha and Chai lattes. Lots of tasty vegan snacks, cakes and meals. Definitely worth visiting!
R. M.
The atmosphere is lovely and cosy. There is a variety of tasty food to choose from, especially the sweet treats. Writing and drawing on the walls is fun, as is reading what others have left on there. I started drawing out my favourite painting when I first went and the staff members were so helpful in trying to find the right coloured pens and pencils to finish it off properly.
C. S.
Discovered this place out of the blue while looking for a vegan café. And I simply fell in love with the concept and the place. More place like The Canvas should pop up. Just had a Beet latte which was delicious but the food looks amazing.
Also, you can pay to offer meals to persons in need which is an amazing idea to start making a change in this world
S. W.
Nice little vegan café, with some great-looking things on the menu. I was a bit underwhelmed by their vegan freakshake, though: way, way overpriced at £8.00, not especially big or freaky, and I wished I'd gone for a slice of the delicious-looking vegan cake instead. Still, would recommend! Everything other than the freakshake looked reasonably priced.
T. A.
Highly recommend. Such a lovely place. Good all vegan breakfast and tea/coffee
C. D.
A great vegan cafe and creative space in Shoreditch. Very chilled place to hang out in and delicious vegan food including tofish and chips (pictured)
A. K.
Great vegan cafe with a delicious vegan full English! Cosy vibes and lots of plants too 😊 love the pay if forward board as well.
V. d. C.
Nice little café just around the corner from Brick Lane. The space downstairs could be improved but overall there's a nice atmosphere. They rent out their space to lots of events and workshops
R. M.
Lovely staff, had a GREAT playlist on (80s), and the food (tofish & chips) was delish too! Try the chilli hot chocolate
K. G.
Lovely atmosphere, nice large croissants, all for good causes! Plenty of seating areas and friendly service.
M. L.
Lovely place with a great vibe and stunning food - recommend the full English! Too full for a brownie this time but I’ll definitely come back.
D. (.
We went to the canvas café for Stella’s Malaysian vegan food. It was delicious and the staff were really lovely too. Thank you very much for having us
G. M.
Really cosy place and great vegan food & drinks! Will definitely be back.
K. D.
Wonderful welcome on a chilli snowie day, I opted for Marinara sourdough sandwich. It was disappointing and very expensive £10.50 however place has great feeling and this is my first visit I will be back.
Has a happy hour 5-7pm two cocktails for tenner.
C.
Amazing Brownie and such a tasty coffee really nice place! Even the toilet is too small... I Love it!
M. M.
Very nice coffe in Shoreditch , I came here on Sunday and it was nice and lovely vibes
K. S. (. T.
So good, didn't even notice it was a vegan place the first time I went there! Will be the new favourite Shoreditch spot for Chaos Theory team meetings. Great staff, great menu, happens to be vegan and ethical, for this meat-eater it's still the best-tasting food on Brick Lane.
C. K.
Amazing vegan food and really lovely place and staff.
J. S.
Sorry... was meaning to take a photo of the food but was too hungry.
Yeah... was so good I almost forgot it didn’t have any delicious animals in it.
E. B.
Lovely staff, lovely food (try the vegan breakfast!!) And to top it off they do pay it forward. Wish more places were so socially conscious. I've yet to partake in any of their events but I'm very curious, all in all a brilliant little caf and one I'd recommend to anyone. :)
F. N.
My friends and I went to this place for breakfast and was such a lovely experience. The staff is amazing. The food is delicious but maybe a bit overpriced.
A. B.
This is a little hidden gem off Brick Lane that offers a really great range of vegan food as well as lots of social and community events as it's a social enterprise. They also have a pay it forward scheme that allows people to pay for someone else to have a coffee or meal which considering how many needy people are in this area I think is great.
I highly recommend it for a snack or more substantial meal, it's a business worth supporting.
Z. S.
Nice little place with vegan desserts but unfortunately my piece of cake was so dry, I think it was out without any cover all day :(
C. B.
This is a lovely cafe, all the food is vegan. We had the tofu (not fish) and chips with mushy peas. A caring place in the community! And the full english has tater tots!..... next time....
C. T.
Really great cafe that puts on a lot of free events. I appreciate the rotating and often vegan menu. Avocado toast is amazing. However, the staff can be hit or miss in regards to welcoming/friendliness. I wanted to pay for a £3.20 coffee with some coins once and was haughtily asked if I instead 'had a card' even though there was no line or was it busy...Sorry if your customers demand some time and you can't just sit there!
L. S.
Very small bar but very nice food! Such a treasure.
E. R.
Best vegan sausage I've ever had! Love the vibe and will definitely be back. Probably one of my favourite places for brunch in shoreditch
f.
Four of us had a reunion breakfast in The Canvas, and we had a great time in this 100% vegan venue. Magic made us some great coffee, and helped us feel welcome, breakfast was delicious and a lovely time was had by all. The question on the wall even got us thinking: 'what would you tell your younger self?' ...there you can think about that as well b4 u visit! There's a social conscience at work here as well, like buying a meal ahead for the homeless, so more power to u Canvas - keep up the great work!
A. S.
Amazing cafe and social enterprise. A totally vegan, totally amazing and tasty menu served up by lovely staff. The cakes are incredible and you have to try the tofish and chips, so good! Really good coffee from a local supplier (I've forgotten who, they did tell me!)
S. B.
One of the first Happy Cafes! Positive psychology based actions are here and they have lots of events and action for happiness even has a class here!! The tea is amazing -get the white peony, and food is wonderful too. Best atmosphere ever and you'll feel good reading everything on the walla. I hears there's an outdoor seating upgrade too!
J. I.
Really good oat flat whites here and a great cake selection. Always playing good music too. The pay it forward scheme is also great and the place being non-profit means you can know your bill is doing something decent
A. J. M.
Lovely vegan food and friendly service
k. s.
The best food I've eaten on Brick Lane in ten years, all cuisines included. I'm not even vegan, it's just really tasty and probably the only food on Brick Lane that's worth the price.
C. N.
The Canvas Cafe is my favorite place in London for a number of reasons. The staff is absolutely fantastic. They are very kind and a joy to do business with. The location is great, with plenty to do very close by. It is conveniently located a ten minute walk from Aldgate East Station. THE COFFEE. For London standards, this coffee rocks. It is the best coffee I have been able to find in London all year. Also, the ambience is fantastic and it is an events venue as well!
L.
A friendly welcoming place. Loved the ambience there and outlet for creativity, the walls are covered with guests' pictures and comments. I liked the pay-it-forward offer, affording those who experience difficult times to enjoy this place's warmth, physical and emotional. You go, Canvas!
S. K.
Lovely place to sit and work in the afternoon, accompanied by a huge and very filling freakshake.
Friendly staff as well.
Love the pay it forward concept too.
T.
What a cool little place. Lovely menu which is 100% vegan and there is something for everyone. Lots of feel good graffiti on the walls and a friendly community vibe.
Damn good coffee also!
C. W.
This cafe was lovely, the menu had an array of classic vegan meals and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was relaxed and calm and the staff were pleasant and helpful. I will return!
N. H.
Delicious vegan food! First time trying tofish and chips and I was pleasantly surprised. The batter was perfect however the tofu could've use a little flavor...difficult since its tofu after all but this wont deter me from giving 5 stars. Perfectly crispy chips, mashed peas were sweet but not too sweet and tasty. Also had the falafel bowl and some.sort of risotto ball. Didnt have a single bad dish. Go support them!
M. L.
One of the best vegan breakfasts I have had in London! I also love the idea behind the place and how you can actually write on the walls with chalk.
C. L.
A great full English breakfast included home made beans which were absolutely delicious.
The hot drinks and cakes looked amazing but I was too stuffed to try any after my breakfast - will definitely be back to try more.
S. H.
I just had the roasted veggie sandwich, and it was delicious. Friendly, cozy cafe. Would definitely return. Don’t leave it until too late in the day for lunch - they seem popular, and they’ll run out of items.
N. T.
Lovely creative cafe. Good coffee and pastries, nice element of being able to leave your own mark.on the walls. Wonderful community space at the back of the cafe, as well as an outside area, quiet and well kept.
S. A.
What a wonderful cafe! A place to chill out. A place that creatively celebrates a positive body image. A place to meet with random others and talk about mindfulness, kindness, creativity and life. Delicious cake and lovely tea too! Well done to Ruth and the team to offer a sanctuary in busy London to rest, reflect or attend and attend events that lift the mind, body and spirit. :-)
J. H.
Food is great, the ethos is excellent.
Pay-it-forward scheme - hot food for those that can't afford it. Non-profit actively focusing on making a positive change. Ran by good people.
L. H.
Absolutely LOVED this place. Accidentally came across it and was so excited by all of the amazing vegan food. They whipped me up a choc banana AND pb freakshake and I would 10/10 recommend. Lovely staff as well, v friendly and helpful. I'll be back!!!
J. -.
This place is all can can can and I always love going by when I'm in the area. Not only do I love their noble and community feel, but the food is perhaps even nobler - special shoutout to the arancini balls and the staff ! (pictured is also their new avocado toast -drool emoji- )
C. W.
Probably my favourite cafe in London. Their ethos, food, coffee and vegan treats are all outstanding. An inspiring yet casual and welcoming place, run by wonderful people.
M. B.
I went here to try out the tofu and chips. The tofu was really nice, the chips are just normal chips. The atmosphere inside the cafe was nice although it can get a bit cramped since the place is small and always busy.
B. P.
They have small garden, a huge downstairs space, usually host some interesting workshops and meetups.
Good coffee, fresh shack, organic juice, fresh bakery, beer....etc.
Service are all lovely to share their music taste and life opinion.
Sometimes, groups of art tour will stop by in front of the store. You can always jump in for the art tour when you are in the shop.
Good for groups of tourist to stop to have wifi searching for the next station or the local people to fresh out.
All nation are all welcome.
D. M.
The cafe is really cute and love the fact that they do different events. The food I've tried is really nice, with lots of vegan options, one of the girls working there even gave me the recipe of one of the plates.
P. D.
This place usually hosts Tea With Strangers, an amazing London event to share time with absolute strangers! The venue is really nice although I didn't get anything other than a drink. Way to go for hosting such amazing event!
K. T.
Visiting the UK from Brooklyn, came here on a recommendation for shakes.... Got to Canvas Cafe to find they were closing for a private party... But the owner felt so bad, she gave us a heaping portion of her HOMEMADE avocado/lime ice cream with vegan whip cream to go... IT WAS PHENOMENAL!!
I'm not sure when I'll be able to come back to fully experience their menu, but if the avocado/lime ice cream was any indicator of the rest of the menu, I HIGHLY recommend you check this place out for yourself!!
T. A.
A sweet cafe/restaurant. The entire menu is vegan and there are many gluten free options. They also run many activities and events such as yoga classes, mindfulness session etc. It’s worth checking out their website for more info.
M. O.
So far, my favourite café in East London! Good coffee, interesting food - experimental in a good way I would say! And a lovely relaxed atmosphere, with some feel-good events held there too!
J. M.
The coconut brownie was delicious, great selection of free workshops and you can write on the walls! Staff were up beat and friendly. Perfect for freelancers - food and drink deals for those using the space to work.
B. S.
Shabby chic community cafe that serves food and drink as well as hosting various events. Good for a healthy bite of proper, home cooked food and an always good attitude. Scribble on the walls, learn the ukulele and relax in a welcoming setting. There is a tiny garden at the back for sunny days.
N. P.
Absolutely outstanding in every way. Try their mushroom terrine
N. M.
quite expensive and not a lot of sitting space upstairs (where there's a lot of light), only in the basement. Good food though.
R. S.
Lovely vegan cafe, great for catching up with a friend, reading a book or doing some work. They have some interesting espresso martinis as well.
R. H.
Quaint, vegan café that only takes card payments. There is a pay-it-forward board—you can pay someone else's food/drink. Also, customers can write stuff in the wall. The coffee was okay, the cakes looked tasty.
A. B.
Great selection of vegan food. Nice ambiance, and food all pretty tasty, but 4 not 5 as the scrambled tofu was a bit of a let down (not terrible mind, just not as good as elsewhere).
A. N.
delicious pies & beautiful homemade berry lemonade on the house !! <3
G. J. B.
London's 'Happy Cafe' The Canvas Cafe is truly unique - you can write on any of their walls! I thought the cake I had was delicious, it had lots of whole hazelnuts in it which I really appreciate.
J. v. d. Z.
Cosy and quiet cafe! Staff is friendly yet not the quickest. Prices are good for the nice location next to Brick Ln. The writing on the walls looks nice since you can write down answers on questions they've written on the walls.
E. D.
Don't get a freakshake... I'm so sorry to say it but they were insanely overpriced and tasted of nothing. It was a bit sad. Cafe itself was lovely though and had a really nice vibe. Chocolate cake was also delicious.
M. R.
A lovely little vegan cafe with good coffee and nice cakes. They do a lot for the local community, so supporting them is appreciated
J. H.
Beautiful apple and fennel soup!
A. L. W.
Amazing breakfast, 100% put my money in the right place😉
A. M.
Charming little cafe with friendly staff and an assortment of food, suitable for vegans too! They also host a range of events that really help you connect with the wider area.
L. t. B.
I've known the girls at canvas since working on Hanbury St myself. The cafe is warm, welcoming and relaxed, and I always will direct anyone who wants a nice coffee or food to check out what's going on there, as its more than a place to just grab & go.
E. P.
Nice place with nice staff and menu but the prices are a bit expensive. Either drop the prices a bit or offer bigger portions. Apart from that, everything is fine.
J. P.
Small place with nice people! Went there for Malaysian food, awesome!
I. V.
Completely vegan, lovely ambience and the staff were very kind. Had a piece of cake and an oatmeal milk latte. Looking forward to going back!
A. P.
Great cafe. Really friendly staff and casual atmosphere. Will definitely come back again. Vegan freakshake worth trying.
L.
Easily the best vegan full english breakfast I have had. I also had the quesadilla and that is also a must try.
S. M.
Amazing food, delicious coffee, lovely staff, pay it forward scheme and everything else they're doing is incredible.
D. E. (.
THIS IS A MUST GO. The place downstairs is very cool with walls written by everyone who passed by, answering some questions you find in them. Definitely a place to find inspiration, and gather people who want to do a positive change in society (they are also next to the museum of happiness!)
G. I.
Oh my days! The lentil wrap! Big love for this place.
R.
Little garden!!! Nice and cosy. Homemade foods. Good coffee. A "happy museum". Love their initiatives.
Hopefully their lovely "freakshakes" soon become all sugar free.
J. A.
Lovely spot. Get the pancakes if they're going; I'm not even vegan but they're the best pancakes I've had in London.
P. S. D.
London's first happy cafe! lots of events and groups, great vegan food and cake, coffee and beer and u can draw on the walls (bonus)
E. B.

G. H.
if my mum knew how to cook vegan dishes : delicious, comforting and wholesome - try the chilli cauliflower steak
H. v. d. B.
Cozy, friendly atmosphere. Nice food. Pleasant ladies. Just outside the financial district - help the homeless!
S. C.
Great idea, the walls are canvases where people can write uplifting and positive messages. So nice coffee and you leave feeling happy, what's not to like?
A. H.
Love this little social enterprise. Simple, generous portions for dine in meals, hot drinks and projects to get involved in at your fingertips!
E. F.
I had the unchicken sandwich and an iced late with oat milk - both were very good. Lovely and quiet garden round the back.
J.
A lovely little cafe/bar just off Spitalfields market.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food was perfectly decent.
M. F. L.
Interesting place (grab a marker and write on the walls) with a lively calendar of events. Haven't tried the coffee or food there, but they do DripApp!
H. H.
Food was absolutely delicious, really friendly staff and a cool space. Would definitely recommend.
J. D.
Coffee shop with happiness on top. Delicious food and cakes, but also regular events centred around mental health and well-being.
R. I.
Had a takeaway sandwich, was really good and reasonably priced for the area. The food coming out for people sitting down looked good. Will be going back
S. P.
Fab vegan breakfast and great value in a nice relaxing place with lovely staff - a real find

Community cafe with vegan menu.

A beautiful and lovely place. The food was great, but the positivity and idea of this place is even better. ♡
N. G.
Had the full English and it was very good. I like that the place is fully vegan and a social enterprise too.
B. v. d. T.
From writing a poem on the wall to drinking from an old chocolate spread glass. An absolute must to visit!

Lovely place and idea not always executed to 100% but go back anyway :) was disappointed in the tofish and chips but salads were good and coffee decent
