Best food I've eaten I'm recent memory. The miso maple aubergine was delicious! My main tortilla was very fillyling and flavoursome... & the dessert 😍 oh my! Tasted so much like profiterole! Yummy! Also had a lovely busy atmosphere and our waiter was fab! Thank you!

SUNDAY ROAST [3 courses for £22.50]: Crispy Marinate Tofu (Starter) – Fried tofu marinated in maple syrup & soy sauce with a quinoa, avocado & tomato salsa, coriander & lemon dressing; Artichoke Terrine (Starter) – Truffle & hazelnut infused artichoke, homemade sundried tomato & basil salsa, grilled bread; Beetroot Cheese Burger (Main) – Pretzel bun, smoked tomato relish, cornichons & raw vegetable salad with wholegrain mustard & maple dressing with vegan cheese; Root Vegetable, Chestnut & Sage Wellington (Main) with roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, madeira sauce; Peanut Butter Brownie (Dessert) with vanilla ice-cream & chocolate sauce
As The Gate is known as a vegetarian restaurant that has been around for many years, I was really excited to have my lunch here with a friend.
We were here on a Sunday, and both opted for the Sunday 3 course lunch menu. Both the starters we got were amazing! The crispy marinate tofu was nicely fried – crispy batter and tender tofu inside that had a tasty marinate. It was served on a generous bed of quinoa that was delicious with the salsa. The coriander & lemon dressing added zing and lightness to the dish. The artichoke terrine was so good! Buttery, creamy and very flavourful! The salsa was fresh and fragrant. The grilled bread was crispy which was perfect for the soft terrine.
To me, the mains we got wasn’t as outstanding as the starters. The Wellington had a nice and flaky pastry, but it wasn’t my favourite because the filling was more sweet than savoury (too much sweet potato). The veg wasn’t as well roasted too. The burger was ok. It was tasty and I liked the pretzel bun. There was nothing special/outstanding about it to me, nevertheless, a solid well-made vegan burger. The Peanut Butter brownie? Very decadent – moist, fudgy and gooey. It is a bit too sweet for me, and the vanilla ice-cream served as the perfect balance for the richness of it. Needless to say, the peanut butter and chocolate goes perfectly together with the hints of nutty and salty flavour to it.
The restaurant has a simple and contemporary décor. The staff could be more attentive to our needs, they were quite slow too. One thing is the table we sat at, there was a time when the sunlight was shining directly at my friend. Not only was it hot, the strong sunlight was distracting too as it was shining right at his eyes (he had to squint). Very uncomfortable yet the waiter/waitress was hesitant to let us switch tables when there were plenty of free tables. Please, add some curtains or shades to the windows! It is very uncomfortable for customers at the tables by the window!
Overall, food of solid quality and taste. Some were not as good as the others, but generally above average! The prices are on the expensive side, but I think it’s reasonable for the portion and quality you get. From my experience, you can’t go wrong here with good Vegetarian/Vegan food (that will probably satisfy a non-veggie too!) – so I do recommend The Gate for special occasions/when you want to treat yourself.

Delicious and incredibly creative menu. Amazing service. Classy vibes. Great drinks.
I really enjoyed my experience here, which is why I’m giving it 5 starts; however- management please fix the plumbing issue. There was a faintly grotesque smell at my table - when I went to use the Loo I realized it was the entire downstairs where the bathrooms are that smell HORRIBLY foul.
That being said the service and food are so incredible I can’t give it less than 5 stars
F. T.
As always a great mix of refreshing flavours. Had the mushroom risotto and the aubergine teriyaki noodles for mains. Have to say though, nothing beats the courgette flower starter - second time I've come back just for this!
K. S.
Went for my birthday lunch. We had an amazing time. Staff are very friendly and helped with allergy requirements, kids meals and very attentive. The food was just amazing - pictures attached. Highly recommend the beetroot dish.
D.
A superb establishment that serves outstanding food. Although it may appear humble and simple on the outside the food served is outstanding and all merit and compliments should go to the owners, chef and staff. It may only serve vegetarian food but it is definitely worth the money. Again outstanding.

Don't understand how anyone could rate this below a four. Visited this restaurant a number of times and every time the service and food has been impeccable. One of my favourite vegetarian restaurants in London
S. B.
Great all vegan restaurant. The set menu is 3 courses for £22 is well worth it! The portions are good size and well presented. The service was friendly and attentive. The acoustics arent great though you can struggle to hear each other even when the restaurant isnt full. But the food is deffinatly worth a visit.
J. G.
I came in with high expectations and my god was I right. The food was amazing, tasty, beautifully presented, very quick to arrive, and the restaurant is lovely. But I cannot reiterate enough how much I enjoyed the food - particularly the miso aubergine stood out, and we were so full by the end. I've been recommending it to all my friends since I went.
M. D.
Superbly presented menu and plates, staff were friendly and welcoming. Our group of eight autistic people enjoyed the experience, a great choice of wines and beers, with complementary matching. We stayed on for pudding. Will definitely come here again. Extra: toilets come in three genders!
F. N.
We wanted to come here on a Friday night but it was virtually fully booked by midday Friday lunchtime so I would recommend booking far in advance if you want to go at a popular time. We ended up going on Sunday evening and the restaurant was fairly quiet.
The food was exquisite, our plantain fritters were delicious, subtle hints of lemongrass made the dish. Both of us enjoyed main courses of aubergine schnitzel and butternut squash Rotolo. This restaurant proves that you don’t need meat go have an amazing culinary experience. All the dishes were tasty, with subtle but interesting flavour combinations. Our only complaint was that the service was very friendly but it felt that they were rushing us through our courses. Food came out quickly but we were given little time to relax and enjoy the ambience. Given that the restaurant was quiet it seemed unnecessary to be coming over so often to ask what dessert we wanted.
Overall it was a positive experience and well worth the slightly higher price compared to chain restaurants and displayed vegan food at its best.
J. K.
Great food, lovely atmosphere. Cannot give 5 stars: 1. Expensive; 2. Waited around 45 mins between starter and main; 3. Mixed toilets need update...a bit grim
Will visit again.
S. Y.
Great atmosphere in this lovely vegetarian restaurant. Very hard to choose from the menu as everything sounded sooo good! Great flavour combinations and super tasty!
S. D.
Two words: absolutely amazing. From the friendly and helpful staff, to the airy and inviting restaurant, from the menu selection, and the fabulous presentation, this is a place I will come to again and recommend without hesitation. The portion are significant, so come hungry! I literally wanted to try everything on the menu, which was obviously impossible, but the selections I made were completely satisfying. The next time you're in the area, or any of their other locations, do yourself a favour and stop in; you will be happy you did.

Pictured is the tiramisu dessert which was light, and full of flavour. The selection of starters and sides were also delicious, highly recommend the polenta chips and courgette flower dishes. All the dishes on the menu were vegan, with an option of dairy cheese in the main dish burger. Reasonable prices, pleasant ambiance, and good service. Short walk from Angel station and to Sadlers Wells, this is an ideal location for a meal before or after a performance.

We went here for Father's Day and had a brilliant meal. The food was all delicious, which for a commited meat eater like me is pretty impressive. Most of what we ended up eating was Vegan as well as veggie and you couldn't tell the difference.
The roast vegetable Wellington was particularly good! The capuccino cheesecake was also delicious, no idea how you make a veggie cheesecake taste so good (apparently soy milk and avocado...)
Four of us had 3 courses and drinks for £140 including service.
J. N.
A well established plant based restaurant. The menu is always changing. Service is very friendly and quick. The food is always presented well and tastes as good as it looks. Very convenient for a pre or post meal, if you are visiting Sadlers Wells. A must visit for an vegetarian/vegan. Even hard core meat eaters will struggle not to like their food.

Came for Sunday lunch. Had a lovely time. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, the venue was relaxed without feeling scruffy, and the food. Oh the food. As nice as it is for vegetarian food to become mainstream, you really can see a difference in places where they really *know* vegetarian food. Everything we ate was delicious - and exactly the right amount so we left full but not uncomfortable. Strongly recommended.
S. W.
Delicious veggie restaurant. Great selection. Meat eaters love it too. Good portion sizes not too huge. Also nice wine selection. Slightly on the pricey side but good for a special treat.
A. P.
Amazing atmosphere! The menu has so many delicious-sounding dishes. If you love mushrooms, definitely go for the risotto it was absolutely amazing. The tacos we so tasty I loved the bean sauce and the sweet potato and corn was a good mix. The green dragon is also impressive, I wish the tofu was a bit more crispy and perhaps needed some more filling vegetables or sweet potato rather than just celery and leaves, but very tasty nonetheless. I forgot to take a photo of the sticky toffee pudding - too good to wait. Really want to go back and try other dishes!!
G. R.
As non-vegetarian one of the best places I have been in the area so far. The staff is inspiring, very much into the restaurant culture. Good wine and desserts
A. A.
Fantastic service good vegetarian food beautifully presented. Tasty dishes to tempt even the non vegetarian to go back.
Love the casual friendly atmosphere.
S. P.
Had the Starter Platter...fantastic. Great mix of flavor. Well worth the visit.

Went here for my boyfriend’s birthday. I’m not vegan nor usually like vegan food, but this food was amazing! I ordered the shitake gyoza and it’s delicious :) my boyfriend also enjoyed his aubergine schnitzel, overall it was a great evening as the waiter added a candle on our dessert too
O. M. L.
Really nice! We were in a sort of a hurry when we came inside, but the delivery was fast so everything turned out fine. The food tastes amazing and unique. The restaurant itself didn’t look like much from the outside, but on the inside it was really nice and fancy, but not too fancy either.
E. B.
On the more expensive side of things but really great main courses. The trios of desserts was way bigger than I thought. Nice light open setting. Worth an eat.
G. F.
The meal that my girlfriend and I had here last night rates as one of the best we've had at any restaurant catering for vegans.
The flavours complement each other wonderfully.
I have to recommend the Dark Chocolate Snowball for dessert. It's insanely rich so you could share. Not knowing the size we ordered one each and were both nearly in chocolate comas. We will be back for sure.
G. H.
Fantastic range of Vegetarian & Vegan foods, with a range of other diets catered for. Very friendly staff and a wide drinks selection.
C. V.
Excellent place for veggie lovers. Mix of cuisine from the world and healthy juice. I will happily try a veggie breakfast there
D. H.
Amazing vegan menu. Slow, but friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. Stinky toilets
J. D.
As somebody who isn't a vegetarian or vegan but totally open minded and wanting to eat more responsibly, this place was a revelation. Came here for a birthday meal and the quality of the food, service, and atmosphere lived up to what you would expect for a special evening. Love this place and want to go back again.
S. M.
The food is both tasty and textured. Great place to take a carnivour to show them just how good a veggie meal can be.
S. W.
Lovely veggie / vegan food, good service and great atmosphere. Really enjoyed my Friday lunch here.
P. D.
Good food, but not exceptional - for the price I'd expect significantly more. Polite staff, but average service with long wait times - as we were about to order they realised they'd forgotten to offer their alternative menu for the day. Tables were also very crammed in.
C. A.
Polenta chips and mushroom risotto outstanding. Aubergine schnitzel average. Service average to poor.
B. M.
Lots of vegan options on the menu which is great. The mushrooms and risotto cake was delicious, it certainly was a very popular choice.
The chocolate snowball dessert was good, slightly disappointing as the chocolate sauce wasn’t hot enough to melt the shell (possibly because it had been sat on the counter for a while).
Overall the food was really tasty, service was slightly on the slow side. We’d ordered olives and bread to share but it only arrived after we’d received our mains and had prompted the waitress
J.
The food here is delicious. A really good place to come, even if you're not vegetarian or vegan.
I wasn't a fan of the homemade lemonade which was extremely bitter. And the service was okay, but not outstanding. It's also quite expensive.
But, the food that comes is absolutely delicious and filling. It's presented beautifully, and they have a really nice selection of vegan beers. It's also LGBT friendly, which is really good too.
The atmosphere is really lovely too, and the food comes out relatively quickly.
The toilets aren't as clean as the could be, and a couple of cubicles were closed because the Thames had backed up and blocked the toilets. But this isn't necessarily their fault, and it's a minor issue.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend.
J. J.
Great food, lovely waitress (Maria) but a bit pricey!
d. j.
amazing vegetarian/vegan spot. creative plant-based menu. The Aubergine schnitzel with cashew cheese cream is delicious.
R.
My favourite vegetarian restaurant in London. Food is delicious, service is great. Can't recomend highly enough.

Came to The Gate for a special treat on Saturday. The food was amazing, great menu and delicious. The whole menu was vegan which was awesome. However, the service isn’t great. I’m not sure if they were understaffed but we kept having to get the waiting staff’s attention to ask for things, a wine list, to be able to order some drinks (after asking for a wine list?!), where the drinks were etc. It’s not a cheap place and the service just doesn’t match the food or prices. It’s the 3rd time we’ve been in about 18 months and the service is always a bit disappointing.
M. T.
Delicious vegetarian and vegan restaurant. It's definitely on the pricey side and portions are not huge but it's totally worth it. The aubergine schnitzel is amazing and the desserts are delicious.
Service is maybe a bit too pushy. Asking if I want still or sparkling water when I still have my coat on is a bit too early. The overall experience just make you feel like the staff wants to sell you everything that's on the menu. Some people will hate that.
D. H.
Mushroom risotto cake is excellent. Outstanding polenta chips. Good service.
A. S.
Just left here after a lovely birthday meal with friends. The food was amazing and incredibly good value when we ordered from the 30th Anniversary menu.
I ate so much and enjoyed every mouthful.
The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly and made us feel really welcome and looked after.
I cant believe it took me so long to come here. Fantastic
R. D.
Very close to angel station.
Food was very flavoursome and portions sizes were generous.
I’m a meat eater, but loved their menu. So meat eaters do not be shy. The beetroot burger was to great, tasty, juicy and had nice crunch. I would go back for this.
The only critic I would have is the decor needs a bit of polishing.
E. B.
Great vegan menu - specially the desserts!
M. H.
Delicious vegetarian/vegan food and great service.
A. B.
I predominately eat meat, but the Gate serves really tasty and well presented veggie food, you won't be disappointed
T. R.
As a vegetarian, I really enjoyed the food in this restaurant. It is, however, worth nothing that it is on the pricy side at £7-8 for a starter and £13-£18 for a main course. I had a potato cake and a tortilla and these were both delicious. We also shared some polenta chips which had a strange texture!
The atmosphere here is a bit strange; and the toilets downstairs smell strange! However, overall I would recommend.

Just Superb ! Our experience was first class and I'm moved to absolutely rave about The Gate, Islington!! Fantastic food, excellent prices and the restaurant atmosphere was so welcoming - lovely and warm on a cold winters night, beautifully lit, and I've never seen so many happy faces, everyone looked so engaged and it was a pleasure to be somewhere where everyone was having just a lovely time - I have never experienced that in any other restaurant. My friend and I had dinner before going to the Ballet and it was perfection. We are vegan and the menu was very varied and really interesting - we were spoilt for choice - so ate a lot!! Everything was alive with sensational flavour, texture, the menu was creative and the presentation was beautiful. Every mouthful was delicious and I can't wait to come back !

Second visit, very good food but it’s disappointing that the service lets them down. Everyone can have a bad day but everyone who has served us on both occasions have seemed quite unhappy. My partner and I both work in hospitality and go out of our way to try and make waiters feel comfortable and ensure we don’t make their job harder, we know how it feels to serve badly behaved customers, but despite our efforts to encourage a happy atmosphere and be as cooperative as we can as customers the service has remained distinctly grumpy and cold.
T. W.
On walking in I was surprised how formal it looked. The staff however were extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant liked meticulously clean, the waiters were well presented and you can see into the kitchen if you wish. The food was first class and if you need to know more about a dish then just ask and they will help. I will definitely return and would recommend to my friends and family.
K. M.
Good food, nicely served. Polite staff. Interior in a good taste.

Came to celebrate a special graduation. Great food great service thank you
A. A.
The food here is incredible. So good that I have even gone to the effort of writing a review. If you think that vegetarian food is dull, then you clearly haven't eaten here. It blows that s*** out of the water.
My only complaint is that the table we were put on wasn't really big enough for 3 people. I had to sit at an angle with my legs out to the side. But I'm still giving it 5 stars because the food and the waiting staff were so good.
(For clarity, I didn't eat the waiting staff.)
M. A.
Food is all vegetarians and tastes ok !!But desserts are awesome. !!prices are bit high but service is good and friendly staff .
A. O.
How often do you have your expectations met especially when you look forward to something you haven't tried before? I usually write reviews when I am happy about stuff only when this happens it's quite special. Not only did I love the Vegan Eton Mess, the Waitress was awesome too. She fully got my passion and was so attentive and nice! Really made my day. My friends loved the food (I went for the Eton Mess only and can also add the coffee was great too). It was affordable, it was indulgent and I cannot go on enough about how wonderful the Waitress (auburn hair with glasses - lucky you if you get her!) THANK YOU
K. O.
A fantastically broad selection of gourmet vegan food, with some vegetarian options as well.
The risotto cake was delicious but could have been better seasoned with salt; the aubergine dish was hearty and well made and the burrito was apparently good, though disappointingly lunchy for dinner in a gourmet restaurant.
Desserts were varied, rich, fairly sweet and of a good size.
Mixed opinions on the cocktails but the Malbec we had was good.
Comfortable surroundings and mostly attentive staff.
C. F.
This is a great restaurant, whether or not you eat meat and fish. The experience from beginning (smooth online booking system) through to end (the reasonable price of the bill) was top notch. The menu is extremely varied, and carefully presents the ingredients, notes whether the dish is GF, vegan, etc, and there is a strong emphasis on fresh and healthy with delicious taste. The service is impeccable - so sorry for not checking the names of the 2 great guys who brought the food and drink, really lovely, polite, kind and professional. The restaurant itself is very light, clean, and airy. I was there for lunch, but dinner would be equally good - just even more busy. Obviously a hugely popular restaurant, and deservedly so. Apologies for misquoting Spock in Star Trek, but it seems a good summary: it is not [vegetarian food] as we know or understand it. Yet it is obviously [vegetarian food], it exists. Excellent, highly recommended. Thank you for the lovely meal, service, and ambiance.
M. B.
Great service, tasty Beetroot Burger, pricey but quality doesn't come cheap!
D. P.
Having walked past this restaurant on a few occasion & seeing that it is always busy. I was walking past with a close friend who enjoys vegetarian food & decided to go inside & investigate. This was around mid afternoon, therefore the restaurant was relatively quiet. My friend & I ordered the Mezze sharing starter platter. The food was delicious & the service was warm & friendly.
Being a bit of a pub enthusiast I noticed immediately that the restaurant at one time in history would of been a pub. This is evident from the wonderfully colourful tiles on the entrance to the dining area.
I will definitely be returning at a later date, but will take into consideration, that due to popular demand, to book early, as the restaurant can get extremely busy. Very beautiful dining experience keep up the good work.
V. H.
The food was generally great and the atmosphere generally lovely (except for the rude couple we had near us - not the restaurant's fault!) But we were here for the valentine's tasting menu and the service was extremely slow. Sometimes we thought they'd forgotten about us. Food was generally inventive and tasty and it's a rare treat to have a tasting menu as a veggie. A slight over-reliance on aubergine and the artichoke terrine was bland.
Not recommended on Valentine's Day and I would only come again if I were already in the area.
R. L.
We came here on a Sunday, post-matinee, and were not disappointed.
The staff were friendly and efficient
The menu, although perhaps not having enough chocolatey offerings for dessert, was mouthwatering.
The food was nicely prepared and presented, and came in adequate quantities.
The price was about what I would expect for this type of food in this part of London.
It was noisy, though: perhaps as a result of the decor being all hard surfaces to reflect the sound, with nothing soft (apart from us) to absorb it.
An enjoyable experience. We shall be back.
D. F. F.
Food was great. Really good. But the acoustics of the place were terrible. We couldn't even hear each other considering how low everyone sounded. The waiter had to talk loud just so we could get what he was saying. Maybe we had a bad table I don't know but the place could definitely do with some soft surfaces.
D. C.
We had a very nice lunch at the Gate. I had a sleeping baby in a pram and they were very accommodating. They made sure I had a table with enough room to have the baby close by.
The food was great. Vegetarian menu was very tasty and beautifully presented. Service was excellent I have no problem recommending.
C. W.
We arrived early for pre-theatre sitting as walk-ins and everything began very well with friendly and efficient staff. The food was excellent throughout and I am not a vegetarian. The restaurant filled very quickly and as it did front of house found it difficult to keep up. A second glass of wine never arrived but nor was it on the bill. Not a deal breaker. I should say that the women servers seemed better than the male manager types. A mixed experience overall but as I said the food was excellent.
f. r.
Nice food well presented. Bill came to 68 pounds for 2 people - 2 starters 2 mains 1 dessert, 2 natural juices 1 tea.
The large main salad with smoked tofu strips on top would be better without the over bearing thick balsamic drizzled across the top.
Very busy atmosphere. Friendly staff.
C. K.
Nice venue with a professional crowd. Moderate prices.
The waitstaff were quite pleasant. The food isn't bad, but it's neither knock your socks off. The challenge with any single focus restaurant, you expect every dish to be spot on and while the dinner was nice, it wasn't outstanding, simple OK.
The ultimate question: Would I go back? If a group were going, I wouldn't say no, but not likely to be a favorite return spot for me.
J. L.
The Gate is an OK vegetarian restaurant but you can get nicer vegetarian food from most restaurants in the area.
The good - I have been twice now and on my most recent trip this week I was pleased that the food had been lightened up quite a bit from my first trip. However, I wouldn't describe it as super fresh vegetarian food.
The not so good - The biggest disappointment are the staff. I found our waitress quite rude. She made me feel that our presence was an inconvenience. I like it when waitstaff are friendly, and welcoming. Unfortunately I left feeling a lack of desire to go back.
S. D.
Had an amazing time here! The service was great and everyone was super helpful. We hadn't booked a table but were still able to have dinner there. Amazing food and was a lovely change from the usual falafel and halloumi all vegetarians seem forced into on dinners out. Will be back :)
T. K.
Met a friend who recently moved to London while we were visiting. Was looking for good vegan food and we found it her. The atmosphere was busy but not over barring. The selection of foods were great and the prices were reasonable. Would definetly suggest anyone to try them out while in the area.
O. D.
Very satisfying meal here, I'm not a vegetarian and sometimes veg and vegan food isn't appetising or doesn't hit the spot. Married to one so I do a lot of cooking so i know this doesn't have to be the case, it wasn't here. Everything looked good and left me with a satisfied smile. So an especially good place to take a mix of eaters, and not that expensive, especially compared to dropping 30 on a steak somewhere. Place was busy but there wasn't a problem talking as a table of 4 and never felt crowded by other guests or imposed on by staff.
S. K.
Delicious vegetarian and vegan food (and I'm a meat eater!) good service, in a nice calm setting.
W. S.
Food is fantastic, presentation is stylish, great atmosphere and very friendly service. Although I don't drink but they have vast selection of wine, cider, beer and so on. I only go there with my wife for special occasion like wedding and birthday anniversary because it's on a bit pricey side. If you are a vegetarian then I recommend give this place a try and you won't regret it.
M. B.
Absolutely outstanding flavours in this veggie restaurant. They happen to be doing veganuary this year, so their whole menu went vegan. I have never expected to like vegan cheese but here you go. Absolutely delicious! If I could, I'd give it six stars.
J. C.
Delicious and interesting vegetarian and vegan food with charming staff. I took my mother here before going to Sadlers Wells and we both really enjoyed our meals. She isn’t vegetarian and I am and we both loved the menu equally; it took us ages to decide. The potato chaat to start was full of flavour and my aubergine ‘schnitzel’ was really very good - the cashew sauce was delicious. Mum has never tried anything like that and she was raving about it! She had a butternut squash, goats cheese, potato delight and scraped the plate clean. We didn’t quite have time for pudding but I saw several all around me and they looked really good. Thank you to the lovely staff too. I’ll be going back for sure.
T. C.
Delicious dishes as always although as a vibe I think I prefer the one in Marylebone.
All the dishes are carefully curated with seasonal ingredients. They are a little different to what the name suggests but always a pleasant surprise.
And the vegan brownie. To die for. So amazing. Best on earth amongst all brownies .
S. S.
Great vegetarian food, always interesting and always presented beautifully. It's a bit pricey so an evening meal here is a bit of a special occasion for me, totally worth it though.
I found out recently that the lunch is not as pricey but is just as beautiful and delicious.
M. W.
It was a nice place but I wasnt wowed by thw food. Its quite pricey for the portions tbh. The tagine was so small I managed to find a single slice of sweet potato. It was a bit poor for that dish. The starters werent delightful. This would be a 5 star if the portions : price ratio was improved. The overall vibe is very RUSHED the first thing they greet you with is "table is rebooked at x" which I didnt find too welcoming. It states this when booking and its perhaps nore tactile to have it printed somewhere on the table rather than it be a greeting. Went for a birthday and felt like we were time watching and guessing what flavours we were supposed to be tasting. It wasnt bad but it could be improved. Waiters were nice though eager to please
P. T.
Had another very pleasant experience here last night. This despite some initial confusion about our reservation for 2 having been booked a couple of days earlier, which necessitated us being asked to sit at the bar whilst a table was prepared (which felt slightly odd as half the restaurant was empty with prepared tables).
However, we were soon seated and orders taken for starters and mains, as well as a bottle of wine with tap water. Unfortunately our desired bottle of wine was also out of stock but the alternative we selected was very good and also slightly cheaper. The starters arrived quickly and were very tasty, not on the large size but perfectly adequate to get us going. My three onion tart was very flavoursome and slightly unusual whilst her smoked tofu was very well balanced.
Once the empty plates were cleared, we had some time for conversation and then the mains turned up. These were exceptional, really tasty with subtle flavours and decent portions. The gyoza were well cooked with gorgeous delicately bursts of ginger, and a mushroom risotto cake was big and earthy and scrumptious.
We decided to add a pudding each, as well as a cocktail. If I’m honest, the former outshone the latter, with my sticky toffee pudding being absolutely lovely. With that lot, the bill wasn’t on the low side but you get what you pay for sometimes. Staff were friendly and helpful in general and checked things were ok with us throughout.
K. W.
Been several times, divine menu. Favourites are the glazed aubergine starter & surprisingly the (not so)humble tortillas. Get a dessert trio afterwards even if you're stuffed, everything is delicious.
Waiters are super friendly & laid back.
Only drawback is that it can VERY crowded & noisy at peak times, would advise coming a bit later/earlier in the evening
Can't recommend enough.
M. P.
Loved the food. The aubergine snitzel was out of this world and the artichoke terrine was great. Everyone was really happy with their starter and mains and the dessert was fantastic too. Such a large vegan selection and all delicious.
N. T.
The food was decent but nothing special. One salad was drenched in a dressing that annihilated all other flavours, the tortillas were a little burnt. Service wasn't great - wasn't offered a top up on our bad wine or more water after our bottle was empty. Didn't ask if everything was OK with the meal after the food had arrived. Nothing majorly wrong with the place but with such a good rating our expectations high and we were disappointed.
D. K.
I was just here for my second visit and have been to a different location of The Gate a few times, also. I always find something good to eat, in spite of my strict carb restrictions. The food (vegan) is attractively served and tasty. I would definitely return. The only downside is that it is not so conveniently located, but I imagine it is expensive to be in the very center (centre) of London. And, there is great public transportation. This time, we took a bus from right near The Strand and was there pretty quickly.

I am not a vegetarian but if I am served every day with meals like those in The Gate, I would probably have no problem turning vegetarian. The food was fantastic here. I didn’t expect to see so many meals without meat, didn’t even know they exist! My friends and I ordered 5 main courses, 3 sides, 5 salads and lots of wine. Everything was very tasty and new to me. The cooks must be amazing.

I'd seen the Gate mentioned online a few times but as it's a nicer, finer restaurant, I was waiting for a special occasion. It definitely didn't disappoint!
The interior is simple but stylish, the staff attentive and friendly and the food is very nicely presented and very tasty. What I particularly liked, is that the fact that it's a vegetarian restaurant wasn't imposed on me as it is in some of the other vegetarian/ vegan restaurants.
You can, of course, find cheaper options in London, however, I was happy to pay a bit more for the service and quality of food we received. Our starter took a bit longer to arrive than it (apparently) should have. We hadn't complained or even really noticed (it didn't take more than 20 minutes) but the waitress came up to our table and told us it would be on the house.
I highly recommend the Gate if you're looking for a nice restaurant, whether you're vegetarian or not.
A. G.
Nice atmosphere and really tasty food. All vegetarian with plenty of vegan and gluten free options. All wines are vegan too. I ordered the aubergine teriyaki and would go back again just for that. Risotto was also delicious.
R. D.
I love the menu at The Gate - such variety and creativity. I haven't had a disappointing meal there yet. It's a treat for vegetarians and carnivores alike - i have brought along meat-eating buddies to The Gate who are bowled over by how good the food is. There's not a huge amount of choice for vegans, but there are some options. The staff are lovely too. Really recommend this place.
N. V.
Tasty food and friendly staff. Loved the sticky toffee pudding!
S. C.
Had a lovely dinner with my Sister's yesterday. All dishes ordered were beautifully presented and flavoursome. Service was friendly and efficient. I considered our meal to be value for money and will return soon.
J. P.
Incentive and confident restaurant. Our party tried every single starter and all were superb. Potato cake and plantain were highlights. Service was fun and friendly. Our mains took a little while to come but the staff were quite apologetic about this. I'm not really a dessert person but the treacle pudding shouldn't be missed and the suggested wine pairing went very well. Super!
F. G.
As a group of 4, all of our dishes (main and dessert) were amazing. High quality food. On the expensive side but absolutely worth it to try the best vegan food you will ever eat!
F. M.
Quite an interesting and varied menu, with flavourful food for the most part though Thai green curry was on the bland side. Atmosphere was great and they have good drinks.
On the evening we went a number of items across starters, mains and dessert were unavailable which was a little disappointing.
P. W.
Excellent and interesting vegetarian food.
Had the mezze starter followed by the Aubergine schnitzel with a desert and a carafe (500ml) of wine (which was the perfect amount for 2 people). Great delicate and subtle flavours.
I'd really recommend it to anyone vegetarian or not.
J. G.
I have visited The Gate in Islington and I am rarely disappointed. The food is interesting, flavoursome and leaves me wanting to come back and discover what the menu will have in store for me next time!
The venue is nice and in a great location, only a few minutes walk from Angel Station. And the staff are friendly and welcoming.
Try the berries and Brioche pudding... it is amazing!
J. C.
I was very, very impressed by the food- the canneloni had an amazing blend of flavours and textures which genuinely surprised and delighted. I have almost got used to bland meals in non-veggie restaurant, so this was a lovely change.
They kindly slotted us in as they were fully booked. Service attentive, venue pleasant. I shall be back when I have more time to enjoy it.
L. M.
Stunning vegetarian restaurant. I am a meat eater and I didn't miss it at all. Loads of flavour packed into the food. The service was welcoming if a little slow. I'm recommending this to all my meat eating friends.
R. F.
We had a nice anniversary dinner here, the food was very good and the atmosphere nice. The service, while far from being rude or bad, could use some polishing. Waiters were friendly but it was the little things like not being able to get their attention to order / pay the bill, forgetting to bring our jug of water, charging us for a bottle of wine instead of a glass, that turned us off it a bit.
M. R.
Having been here twice it has never disappointed me. The food is beyond delicious and very fresh. Don't be fooled by the portion size either - any bigger and you'd explode! Highly recommend it and the staff are lovely too.
A. H.
While I'm not a vegetarian, I was quite interested in trying out what The Gate had to offer. After all, I had never been to a vegetarian restaurant before, so it was new territory for me.
I went with the girlfriend and a couple of friends, one of which is a vegetarian - so I was in good company for this veggie adventure. We were impressed with the modern, yet cosy atmosphere, as well as the generally good portion sizes. We felt the menu and quality was good overall too.
At the end of the day, The Gate won't be for everyone. And dare I say, I would even have liked a bit of meat with my meal. But if you're looking for something a bit different and you're open to the idea of trying a vegetarian restaurant, this could be a good place to visit.
N. M.
V fantastic..the food ..ambience and service all very good...they do tend to leave you to it though..so can come across as slow service...however if you are there to indulge..cannot complain!
Took my mum who has very specific allergies...they were very accommodating and where able to adapt the menus accordingly..
She was extremely happy as often it is a chore to eat out. The food was sumptuous..as a non vegetarian I was extremely happy and satisfied didn't even have space for a dessert!
We will be trying the Hammersmith venue!!
Thank you 'The Gate ' you made my mums birthday very special! Need a was great!
N. L.
Fantastic restaurant. The food never disappoints at this place. Each time I visit, I'm amazed at the freshness and quality of the ingredients, and how well they fit together to create delicious meals. Not to be missed...
S. C.
I've known this restaurant for many years but this is the first occasion when I visited. It was fabulous and better than expected. Had 3 courses starting with the arancini then the aubergine schnitzel and the sticky toffee pudding. I even had the suggested sherr. More than I needed to eat before going to the theatre but I enjoyed every bite! I'll be visiting the Maida Vale branch next.
E. B.
Have been meaning to try The Gate for ages, and was so glad I did! Met a friend for dinner, and ended up having their three course festive dinner, which was £35. There were three options to chose from for each course, and they were all vegan, which was an absolute dream! Interesting interior and friendly staff, the main menu looked great too. Will definitely be back!
A. S.
Excuisite food. Utterly wonderful. Unusual flavour combinations that work perfectly, with finesse & subtlety. All the staff were really friendly & accommodating HOWEVER, the whole meal felt very rushed. The staff have clearly been instructed to appear at the table as soon as the last bite has been consumed, to a point where somebody came over to ask us about desserts, we said we weren’t yet decided, then when my partner visited the toilet, I was accosted again. I reiterate that the staff were wonderful, but the constant attention felt claustrophobic. Once we had finished eating, the attention literally stopped & it took a long time for us to acquire the bill. I’m sure this was something that came from management & it’s a shame because the experience would otherwise definitely have been 5 Star.
M. F.
The best vegetarian restaurant in London. Really lovely decor, great staff and most importantly the food is brilliant. I've taken work colleagues here and even the meat eaters didn't object. I can't recommend just one dish- I've been around 10 times and not had one bad meal.
M. L.
Some great dishes (e.g. Arancini, tortilla, chocolate snowball), some average dishes (aubergine schnitzel, olive bread) but what really knocks the stars off is the terrible service. The majority of the servers are really grumpy and it's not what I would expect at The Gate. I've been to The Gate in Hammersmith and it is a far better atmosphere and service there.
S. V.
The gate is a lovely restaurant. Attentive waitress's, delicious food and quality in the ingredients and craftsmanship of the presentation.
You may pay a little more but definitely worth a visit with an exquisite menu with a lot of vegan options.
E. F.
We had a nice evening at The Gate. Service was cheerful and pleasant. But they're currently (temporarily?) vegan and that means no dairy, hence curious cheese substitutes. I'm not opposed in principle, but I think you have to get the seasoning and spicing bang on if you're going to go full vegan, and I don't think they quite did. Still, I'd eat there again.
L. B.
The Gate is my family’s favourite restaurant. The meals are fantastic especially the saffron ravioli which I usually share with my mom when we are there. Another meal I really recommend is the mushroom risotto cake which is amazing. They also offer fresh vegetable juices which I think is a great addition to lunch.
M. V.
Delicious and varied vegetarian dishes served in a lovely setting, with high ceiling, open kitchen and soft lighting. Gluten free options available as well. Start off the evening with a cocktail and enjoy the atmosphere.
M. K.
The interior was wonderful, I absolutely loved the light, big windows and how the space 'breathed', very enjoyable. Booking is essential. Food was on the other hand nothing special, a bit overpriced for what what we got. Our starters were below avarage, mains were very good and the dessert was average. Portions were a bit small. Service was average. Very nice interior though.
T. M.
First time visit to the Gate, on a quiet, rainy Friday lunchtime. It's in a lovely Islington setting (very close to Sadler's Wells) and the food was excellent. Imaginatively made vegetarian food made me forget I'm a meat eater for a little while. The courgette flower starter was particularly wonderful. Good, unobtrusive service as well made for a great experience.
S. M.
amazing vegan vegetarian food! highly recommend the wraps
R. K.
Great food and service! A little pricey but all very delicious. We had an entirely vegan feast (including wine) without even specifically asking for it. Couldn't tell the difference!
I. S. Y.
Explosion of flavours!
The food was very tasty, dishes originally cooked, ingredients very well combined and, incredible presented.
Good for a date and also a great atmosphere for a friend's meet up.
Advice: book a table, they are always very busy.
N. R.
Best vegan diary options. The Gate is a great vegetarian restaurant in London. With a well thought out menu and vibrant atmosphere. Simple yet delicious. Desserts are great as well.
o. r.
"good, but not excellent".
Great service, good vibes. Food just didn't hit the bar, too much salt. Espresso Martini was faaaarrrr to sweet.
Other diners agreed the chef was heavy on the sodium
J. A.
Food was pretty good (I'm not a vegetarian). We were seated promptly although it was 9:30pm on a Thur and we didn't have a reservation. Unfortunately they sort of forgot about us after serving water and handing is menus. I was unable to catch their attention 20min later had walk up and prompt. Other that came after us got served before us. Being busy clearly wasn't the issue.
D. N.
The vegan options were amazing. I had the artichokes starter and risottos main. Waiter was friendly.
Though they should sort out the smell coming from the downstairs toilets to upstairs eating area.
E. S.
Great menu, lots of interesting and creative options available. Vegan Vegetable Mezze for 2 at £22 was lovely. The one vegetarian component was replaced with a vegan option without having to ask due to a good waiter. Miso glazed aubergine, onion tart and tofu tikka were the highlights. Artichoke terrine was nice but a bit gritty. Mains were artichoke schnitzel and wild mushroom risotto both were lovely apart from being served in luke warm sauce on cold plates. One was eaten and the other sent back, and replaced without question. A new dish returned piping hot on a hot plate. Watching the kitchen showed that some plates sit on the pass for quite a while, whilst diners finish their starters. Service was excellent, good choice of beer and wine. Should have scored 4 but got 3 due to cold mains. We would return for a second try without doubt.
T. R.
Mainly vegan restaurant, great spacious venue, high ceilings, old pub features. Food is good, burger was too salty for my taste, cheesecake was bland in places super flavoufull in others. Friendly staff.
F. L.
Took my vegetarian girlfriend here for her birthday and we both left very happy customers. Excellent food and service, well presented, with good portion sizes. I would recommend this to anyone , vegetarian or not.
C. S.
Been to the gate a couple of times and loved it! Not a vegetarian myself, but it's great to switch it up every now and again for a delicious healthy veggie meal!
I've tried the mushroom risotto and the aubergine tariakki and they were both delicious, but the best part if the dessert menu! The whiskey croissant bread & butter pudding with orange jam is one of the best dessert i've ever had. You gotta try it!
H. E.
Delicious high quality vegan food.
c. k.
Amazing vegan food and very nice ambience. Thoroughly enjoyed😊
E. L.
One of my favourite spots.
The food is absolutely fresh, full of flavours, and unique. We took a table for 4, each one of us ordered different dish and all of us were amazed. It is definitely a place that I'll be visiting again more than once.
p.
⭐️⭐️⭐️: Only Go If Someone Else Made The Plans
The service was fair as was the food. The restaurant tries to make traditional dishes using vegan ingredients and the result is over complicated flavour profiles which mask the best qualities of the core vegetables
R. L.
A party of four went on Sunday evening. The place wasn't that busy, but we still had trouble getting the attention of the staff. One starter was wrong, so we had to wait for its replacement and one side dish never appeared (we weren't billed for it) The food was pretty much faultless, but drink prices are really quite high. (£5 for a small bottle of Peroni, for example)
r. p.
Excellent food.. very very innovative. . I m not a fan of gnocchi but I m so glad that I ordered it just out of whim..one of the best dishes I have had!! Loved the service and the wide selection of options.. would recommend for all vegetarians and my non vegetarian friends too..
L. S.
A few weeks ago I went to The Gate for their Sunday Brunch.
As a vegan, I have found it difficult to find a good veggie place to eat, that my non-veggie friends also enjoy. Thankfully the search is now over!
Despite the restaurants size, they have managed to create a trendy intimate setting. The food was phenomenal and the service was attentive but not crowding.
I had the Wild mushroom risotto cake, with sautéed girolles, pied blue, oyster & paris browns, served on a truffled risotto cake, finished with rocket. and for desert the summer pudding with compote of summer fruits served with vegan vanilla ice cream.
To put it simply it was amazing!!
J. G.
Plenty of character. Aubergine schnitzel was satisfying and hearty. Desserts (Eton Mess and Dark Chocolate Snowball) are good and technically impressive...especially for a vegetarian / vegan place ('how do they do this with vegan cream?', etc).
Green Dragon was the only letdown - way too bland and salady; needed more herbs and Asian zing.
S. C.
Slightly pricey - service is abit slow. But their food is definitely of high quality.
T. B.
The Gate is a vegetarian restaurant in Islington, a couple of minutes' walk south of Angel. Its menu (which changes seasonally as well as having weekly specials) is imaginative and creative and everything looked so tempting, it was difficult to choose. The three onion tart was delicious, and the stilton and quince salad a perfect balance of flavours. The butternut rotolo and aubergine schnitzel were both delicious, and the semi freddo was too good not to finish, even though I was stuffed. Everything was presented beautifully too. The staff were friendly and helpful and the overall experience was great.
J. T.
The starter platter was very nice. Japanese styled aubergine was good. So was everything else on that plate. But I sort of was expecting more from my main. The aubergine schitznel was more like shallow-fried lasagna. I wanted more deep-fried meatiness from the aubergine...
O. G.
Great vegeterian restaurant. Often when I go to a restaurant and order vegeterian food I get the feeling I could do a better job myself. But not here! I had a aubergine schnitzel which tasted great and I wouldn't know how to make one myself. Also, the restaurant is I located in an old butchers store; but you don't really notice anything if you don't know it beforehand.
E. C. J.
The two of us arrived at 8pm on a Sunday to get a bite before casually heading to the cinema. It took a while before we got service to order and again when we wanted to ask for salt/pepper and more drinks, and whilst ordering we were playing a game of guessing what the kitchen was out of....!
We both ordered but was then told it was end of the day and kitchen was out of several dishes and all juices (it would have been useful to been told this in the very beginning, and have it point out what options were left). After 5th attempt we found something on the menu the kitchen still had.
Food was OK. My cauliflower with sauce and pine nut was underwhelming, so was the archistoke terrine (the best bit of it was the well-seasoned semi-dried tomato salsa side). My partner had the aubergine schnitzel, which got thumbs up.
Not in hurry to go back, and I am being generous giving 3 stars, but still wouldn't demiss the place....just hope The Gate has food and juices at next visit.
L. G.
Great food, great service. The only reason it's not a 5 is that the margarita was over priced at £11. I'll be back for sure but will avoid the cocktails
J. W.
I have had some really special dishes here. Book ahead though as they are always busy and are unlikely to be able to fit you in. They are able to rush things through if you are in a rush to get to the theatre.
I've always found the staff really friendly and helpful.
K. R.
the gate serves international vegetarian and vegan dishes. this is more formal dining experience with a really interesting menu and the food presented beautifully. there are two restaurants in london with one in hammersmith and one in islington which we visited on valentine’s day.
for drinks I tried the ‘lavender lady’ cocktail (£9) made with lavender infused gin, lemon, egg white, cointreu & parfait d’amour. the lavender was a really interesting flavour. for starters we shared the ‘three onion tart’ (£6) made with leeks + shallots baked with creme fraiche in a cheese pastry, topped with caramelised red onions & finished with herb oil. the tart was so tasty that it left me wanting more.
for mains we had the ‘aubergine schnitzel’ (£14) made with applewood smoked cheddar, basil pesto, roasted red peppers + plum tomatoes, served with potato dauphinoise & pan fried kale, and finished with a horseradish cream sauce. this was my favourite dish of the evening – loved the crunch of the schnitzel. we also had the ‘tortillas’ (£13) made with sweet potato, sweet corn, goats cheese, chilli, like, coriander, baked beetroot, feta & parsley served with guacamole, sour cream, and black bean pepper salsa. it was yum but not much as a filling serving as the schnitzel.
for dessert we had the ‘indulgence of chocolate’ (£12) special for valentine’s day. it was a trio of vegan desserts which included chocolate + griottine mille-feuille, black beans + sweet chilli chocolate brownie, and dark chocolate ice cream.
the menu indicates what dishes are vegan, vegan option available, gluten free, gluten free option available, contains nuts, and nut free option available. service was friendly and the wait time was reasonable. overall it was a wonderful dining experience with so many different flavours. not the place you’d eat at every week but definitely a place for special occasions.
M. R.
4.5 stars, food was excellent, really really tasty and well thought out but service was on the slower side but nothing to moan about really. Comically large plates even though the portions weren't huge!
R. C.
Food was fabulous, service was pleasant. Drinks were expensive but guess that's London for you. Well worth a visit! Plantian fritters, Aubergine Schnitzel and peanut butter brownie are all highly recommended.
J. I.
Upmarket veggie place with lovely staff. Really delicious and well thought out selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes. The space and food presentation were both beautiful.
M. K.
Service was brilliant and the food was amazing. So fresh and so much flavour. I will be going back very very soon. I only wish they had more locations across London!
R. S. L.
Visited 8th Sept pre Jessie Ware gig and had great service & superb food. Our 2 non vegan friends really enjoyed their food too. Nice spread out tables too. We'll be checking out your Marble Arch branch soon !
C. F.
No photo but the mango cheesecake is amazing
E. E.
If I were just rating the food I would give more than 5 stars if I could. If I were just rating the service I would give less than 1 star if I could. I really, really hope the management read these reviews (please!). The service is horrendous. We waited 20 minutes before anyone even noticed us, then another 20 minutes for the dessert menu after we asked for it. Don't even expect a smile. The food was so good that I will come back and suffer through the horrible service but I do hope they get some new staff soon.
E. E.
As a selective meat eater, having only recently returned from a 3 month flirtation with pescetarianism, my eyes have truly been opened to the delights and flavours of the vegetarian kitchen lately. I went to The Gate a couple of weeks ago to test out their Sunday brunch. The food was a treat for the taste buds and the service welcoming. I had the Portobello mushroom, spinach, goats cheese and sweet potato Fritatta, after which I indulged further with a pressed chocolate and chili torte. The Gate’s contribution to the London veggie scene doesn’t disappoint. The food was so good that I almost want to keep it a secret. But good finds are made for sharing, so enjoy!
M. M.
Didn't know what to expect - went in out of curiosity, not having visited a vegetarian restaurant before....
But - really delicious food - and charming staff (particularly Miguel!) - will definitely be returning next time we are in the vicinity! 👍😀
J. M.
Great Vegan food. Ate here a few months ago and although it is a little on the expensive side for veggie food I would happily dine here again. The food was exceptional, and I am a meat eater so that's saying something!
A. B.
Great first experience of a vegan restaurant!
N. B.
The food is good but if you get stuck with a table near the fire exit, as we were, the view and atmosphere are really poor. Staff at other Gate restaurants have been more attentive. Good for a meal generally but maybe not for special occasions.
W. A.
First time eating a vegan meal, must say i thoroughly enjoyed it.
The restaurant was great, food was absolutely delicious and the staff friendly and helpful....
Would recommend this place 👌👌
A. C.
Disappointing visit. Restaurant was cold - they have nothing to block the chill when the door is opened. Service was poor - slow & forgotten items. Inconsistent food - for example, some starters wrre really good but the mains were not & vice versa. Considering the expense of eating out in London, I'd expect better than what we got on this visit.
M. H.
Lovely food, and not just your standard veggie options. Really interesting, and well presented. Slightly expensive but nice for a special occasion and lovely friendly staff as well
H. W.
Yummy food and efficient service will definitely be coming back! we did order an Earl Grey tea that never arrived but the sticky toffee pudding was exceptional.
J. M.
Delicious and incredibly creative menu. A really good place to come, even if you're not vegetarian or vegan. Recommending!
S. B.
One of the very best places to eat in London - whether it's one of their set multi-course one-off menus or a la carte, you will not be disappointed. High class, beautifully balanced, taste, taste, taste.
B. e.
It’s so pricey and not as good as the one in Hammersmith.
P. J. E.
Sunday roast vegetarian option is great and food quality in general is very high! Also really yummy celery drinks! Service was average.
S. A.
Tasty & healthy vegan / Gluten free food. I had Couscous Fritters for starters and Rotolo for main. Very delicious.
Highly recommended place for Vegan / Gluten free.
Y. T.
Would have liked to try more from the a la carte menu, but was there with a very large group. The waitress was very kind to sneak the mushroom ravioli dish in for me though which was excellent! So I would definitely try again.
S. D.
I'm not a vegetarian but cannot fault the delicious food served here. The portions are small so you may need to top up with a few side orders. That sounds like a complaint but I'd go back here in a heartbeat.
E. M.
Wonderful vegetarian food. A little pricey but that's kinda the point. Had a really delicious meal and the staff are friendly too. A really lovely treat.
J. G. R.
Quite a delightful experience. Fresh and carefully cooked ingredients and a very comprehensive menu. Pricewise it's maybe a bit expensive attending to portions size, but compensated with the quite elaborated cooking process.
J. N.
One of the best veggie restaurants in London, nice without being too expensive. The menu is always changing and it's not too busy either. Good service and nice interior.
X. G.
Ordered Green Dragon Salad and the burger. Really good and finely seasoned. The sides killed it : sweet potatoes wedges and Fried polenta were exquisite.
c. g.
favourite vegetarian restaurant. I go every two months. Their food is just so good that even my non vegetarian friends don't notice they are in a VG place.
D.
Interesting vegetarian menu but execution not up to scratch with some elements undercooked and soft when supposed to be crispy. Tasty food but not up to the price on this visit
J. R.
We did not have reservations. They said they could not accommodate us even though they were empty tables .so we sat on couch with a coffee table and ate our dinner there while we saw the tables empty the whole time.
I had a Thai curry which came with a sticky rice roll. It was to chewy and not enough for a curry to eat with
. We returned the polenta cakes , way to greasy
c. r.
Great for vegatarian and some vegan choices too. Lovely helpful staff and good customer service. Fine selection of wines but slightly pricey. would recommend
N. A.
Even though I'm not a vegetarian myself, there are some amazing dishes here! Absolutely worth a visit. Can be a bit pricey, but hey - that's London for you :)
S. W.
Starters are amazing!!! Mains were cold, took a long time a table of 6 people to be served and to be honest were a chore to eat and something I'd knock up for a mid day lunch. I am disappointed with my life so far.
D. R.
Going to a veg only restaurant was and is difficult, but i have to admit that place was amazing. I really struggled to pick a main because they were all so mouth wateringly good. Then when i did choose i wasnt disappointed. Tasty.
Service could be way better.
S. A.
Pros: really nice food. Great selection of mains beautiful presented.
Cons:starters tiny (more like amuse bouche). Acoustics terrible and tends to attract a shreiky islington crowd.
Overall: meh
M. A.
Great food! It was my first time at The Gate and I will repeat for sure... However perhaps on another location with nicest decoration.
P. H.
Interesting dishes, well presented, nice atmosphere and easy location. Slightly pricey and sometimes a bit of a wait to order, but I always go back once in a while. Tastier than vanilla black
S. L.
Favourite vegan and vegetarian restaurant in London. Great range of really inventive dishes. Service however is highly variable and can be a little pushy ... push back.
L. T.
Very interesting food, enjoyed every bite to the fullest! Was surprised that there was no music playing which made the atmosohere maybe a bit raw. But great experience nonetheless.
T. S.
Went for an Anniversary dinner. Wasn't overly impressed by the food, enjoyed the polenta fries and the service was ok. Atmosphere is lovely though.
Y. P.
The food was fantastic, unusual combinations, very tasty and it all looked amazing! I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I'm looking forward to my next visit.
B. M.
The service is very great, and the staffs are very kind and attentive. Very interesting and fulfilling. This place is really worth the visit. Surely deserved to be highly recommended.Food was awesome, and great price!
L. F.
Heaven for vegetarians, great to have so much choice! Portion sizes are good, great flavours, variety. Love this place.
T. W.
A wonderful variety of dishes and such incredible flavours. Lovely and attentive staff. Nice atmosphere. Such a treasure!
T. M.
Food is great. The service is shoddy, inattentive and appalling. This is my 3rd recent visit and I experienced the same.e
Are the staff untrained or only disinterested. Will not be returning to Islington gate.
B. C.
Delicious veggie food, very charming and helpful staff. Our lunch was really good, mid price range.
J. H.
Food was delicious. Staff were a little disorganised on the day we were there. Also two out of three toilets were out of order which wasn't great.
J. W.
Service was very rushed and we literally got our mains two minutes after we ordered, before our starters. Food was really good but unfortunately I don't think The Gate will be the go to veggie restaurant we were hoping for.
L. M.
Service is amazing! Quick, kind, nice! The atmosphere is relaxed. The food is pretty and greatly presented. Could be more tasty.
R. P.
This is a nice place that serves vegetarian food. We had starters to share, main dish, a dessert + cocktails. Everything was nice but nothing to die for
P. C.
Great vegetarian and vegan options, not too busy on the lunchtime we visited. Slightly "fine dining" so the portions are not that big.
M. O. L.
Excellent vegan food and a lot of gluten free options. Staff is always super nice and they have a good selection of wine
S. S.
Fabulous top class restaurant.
Friendly and helpful service.
Gourmet fresh cooked food - well worth the wait.
Lovely waiter Alex.
W. H.
Brilliant food. Good service although they do try to pack too many covers per table. We really enjoyed the food.
J. L. (. R.
Food and service was fantastic!
I’m not a vegetarian. It didn’t matter. I had the beetroot burger and it was superlative.
J. G.
Bright and comfortable place with excellent cuisine. Meat dishes brought me special pleasure.
R. S.
Best vegan restaurant in Islington
D. C.
Great food, nice atmosphere, good welcome. Service could be quicker, but then again it was Friday evening. Desert in particular was great.
G. K.
What a delightful experience it is to hold a menu and to be able to choose from all the dishes instead of just selecting the only thing without meat. I had forgotten the 'struggle' not to know what to order because I like everything.
J. R.
This is my third visit to the Gate Islington. The food was tasty and filling. The desserts are to die for!!. Thanks to Terry and colleagues for their great service
C. J.
Lovely vegetarian place. Great food and non alcoholic drinks. Friendly service. Great location if you are going to Saddlers Well
J. R.
The only vegetarian restaurant I've been to I would go back, food is amazing, only drawback is the price. 2 starters and 2 mains came to over £80 with a glass of wine.
S. M.
Lovely vegan food, super tasty. The waitress who served us was very nice and helpful.
K. F.
Great atmosphere and on point service. Celebrating 80th birthday. What a find👌
Must try the polenta chips!!
S. Z.
Overpriced nice food, small portions.
J. G.
Really good food but everyone is crammed in to maximise tables. Hard to squeeze between tables to get to your seat. Also because of the amount of people, everyone was shouting to be heard.
N. J. P.
Superb food, peaceful and an 'off piste' location. Service was impeccable, and food was brilliant. Happy to pay the price when the quality is so high. I'll be back!
K. C.

Very good, excellent food and service. Only issue is that it's quite expensive but I would come back. Recommend booking a table at the back, away from the bar

Vegetarian food that is worth talking about - great place that clearly could use a bit more attention - for some reason, the restaurant is often empty, but that's clearly not because of the food. Go there and support them.
