Reviews of The Jugged Hare
K. G.
The food here is exceptionally good; easily one of the best Sunday roasts I’ve ever had. The bar area is dog friendly and staff kindly brought ours a bowl of water. Service at the bar was a little slow and confused at times but it appeared at least one team member was new/in training, so allowances should be made. Overall, I highly recommend The Jugged Hare.

Went on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago at about 14:30 and were able to get in without a reservation for the bottomless brunch. The food was delicious; I loved the heritage beetroot, my venison was gorgeous, and it was maybe the best mashed potato I've had in my life. Waitress was attentive and vivacious; we felt very looked after and welcomed.
The only thing I would change would be adding in a cider to the included drinks on the bottomless brunch, as I'm gluten free and wanted to balance the prosecco and bloody Mary with something a little lower percentage!
Is it expensive? Yes. But the food is good quality and we had a really good time. Definitely a special occasion visit rather than a weekly pub lunch.

Lovely atmosphere and staff, went for the Sunday roast and for the price-point it's pitching itself at, it wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. Our starters (wild boar scotch egg & sourdough with bacon and parsley butter) were nice. The beef was full of gristle, and the Yorkshire pudding had clearly been made at the start of service and kept semi-warm on the side. Nothing majorly wrong here, but it's an expensive lunch and for the price (£26 for the roast beef) I would have expected a much better standard overall. I'd come back and give the a la carte menu a try, because maybe that's where the quality is - the Sunday menu ain't it.
D.
Excellent quality of food. Welcoming staff. Classic surroundings. Good elbow space. All dishes prepared fresh and taste great. Thoroughly recommend.
E. G.
Excellent gastropub!! Good is great - proper scotch eggs and black pudding crickets WOW 🔥🔥🔥 friendly staff, great place for a few beers 🍻
R. M.
Great food and wine list, friendly efficient staff. Socially distanced tables, staff wear masks, clean and safe but still buzzy.
P. J.
Had a great afternoon here. Staff were lovely and drinks came fast. The food was really good particularly the chicken meat and the stuffing was amazing. Veg were a little hard for my taste . Defiantly recommend though. Over £10 for service charge is taking the micky

Went on a Wednesday evening, bar was busy and buzzing with after work city workers and atmosphere was good. The restaurant which is set down a level was quieter and felt more like a restaurant than the pub which I liked. The food was really good and the special jugged hare was delicious. The only reason I gave 4 stars was the service was slow and wine was replaced without asking quickly but no water was left on the table they came round and refilled the very small glasses only twice the whole time we were there other wise we had to ask.
L. A.
Ended up coming here after my first choice venue didn't have space and am I glad I did. Even though they were very full, the staff went out of their way to fit me in. The roast beef was one of the best I had in London and I can't wait to come back!
T.
Mixed feelings about this place and trying not to let the lack of atmosphere due to stealth lockdown cloud my judgement in this review.
Staff were friendly but clearly at a loose end with lack of customers. Nice setting, lacked atmosphere.
The Christmas set menu was full of great choices and did not disappoint but at £65pp (plus £3 supp for cheese) it just isn’t worth it.
The terrine was tasty, well presented and a generous portion. £14 normally on a la carte.
The roast turkey again was sizeable - the sprouts were delicious in cream with bacon bits. Potatoes were delicious but, come on, are we on potato rations?
Stuffing and pigs in blankets were lovely. Plentiful gravy, cranberry sauce and bread sauce.
Cheese (£12 on a la carte) was decent but over priced.
The fourth course was tea/coffee with a mince pie. It would’ve been nice if at these prices the miniature mince pie was restaurant made not out of a box.
Great selection of wines available.
Toilets are basic and you can smell them at the top of the stairs at the start of the dining floor close to where we were sitting.

The pie of the day (chicken) was tasty and didn't do badly in terms of filling although it's quite a lot for the price. My friends both had the burger which was was a double and looked better bang for their buck. The house wine was very good and the dessert selection actually provided some interesting choices which was a pleasant surprise. They were all sweet but tasty.

Lovely pub. We just went for drinks and managed to nab the seats by the window, best spot for people watching. Nice bustling atmosphere and lovely decor.
J. R.
Amazing! We had the sourdough, black puffing croquettes, and scotch egg to start, and then the roe deer and jugged hare for mains. Everything was tasty and perfectly cooked, and the service was excellent.
R. A.
Really lovely restaurant! Went here for a pre theatre meal, I was very impressed by how lovely the servers were and how great the food was. We had the jugged hare, which was incredible. You can taste that it's game, but has a slightly lighter taste than most heavy game. Food was delicious, would recommend anything on the menu. Definitely suggest a trip to this place
N. S.
The service, the ambience the whole experience was just amazing! The food was so delicious! Not to mention how much Dan was so attentive and such an excellent host to me and my husband! It made us go back a second time and book a 3rd table for our next dinner outing for us and the family. Honestly two of the best dinner dates we've had and actually enjoyed that we can't wait to go back and have my family enjoy the same experience. Thank you :)
M. M.
Standard pub. Nice staff, a few kinds of ales. Not so much pub climate.
M. Z.
A terrific spot for a drink or a bite. Friendly, attentive staff, great selection of whiskies and mouth-watering bar food like the Scotch egg with Cumberland sauce and the black pudding croquettes. Nom.
E. F.
Went for an early dinner and the food was very good. Reasonably priced considering the quality and a very thoughtful menu with nice touches. We had the terrine, sourdough bread (amazing bacon/parsley butter), rabbit, hare and venison. All plates were wiped clean! Great quality meat, sides and accompaniments treated very well. Would definitely go back.

We came here for pre-theatre dinner and had a fantastic meal. We ordered the hare, hake and venison and each dish was beautifully cooked and flavourful. A big thank you to Peter for being a fantastic waiter. He was really professional and very friendly, he really made our visit special. We look forward to coming back!
P. F.
Unfortunately our 5.30 booked table wasn't available until 5.55 and we were seated in an 8 seater next to two crowded and noisy tables with babies and lots of coming and going and shrieks. Finally got noticed and ordered. The Sunday roast lucky dip wasn't in our favour - cold to warm veg, poor roasties, meagre gravy and in my case a cold and bloody chicken. I got my replacement after the other three had finished. Did give us the bottle of wine as a compensation. Staff lovely but run ragged. Atmosphere good but grub and service not up to scratch considering the premium price of £26 for a roast.
K. W.
Very diverse and gamey menu. Lots of fowl but also a good mix of beef, pork and other dishes including their famed hare which is exactly what it sounds like (a slow roasted hare that is served in a jug or large pitcher with hare blood). They also commonly have a fish dish on the daily menu. It's a great atmosphere and incredible menu. I liked but did not love my meals. In my opinion you go here for the experience first and meals second.
C. W.
The Jugged Hare is right by the Barbican. A very popular and noisy pub. The restaurant does regular gourmet nights and this Suffolk Venison dinner is my first delightful experience. It is held downstairs in their private dining room. There were 5 tables of 8 which made the space a bit cramped for the servers. A bit like dining in a cruise ship.
I was unfortunate enough to be seated just behind another person so could always feel the servers squeezing through and rubbing their bums against your back! It was quite exasperating at times.
Food was great. The venison themed night paired with 5 different wines are sure to be a hit for wine connoisseurs.
Would highly recommend trying it once. Minor irritation is the high admin fee when booking their tickets online.
K. A.
Great and friendly service. Good choice of beer and spirits too.
I didn't eat but the food looks lovely. Nice little beer garden at the back of the pub.
V. K.
Unique interior with stuffed animals is not for everyone. Very meat oriented menu with game, birds, steaks. Well presented food as you'd expect for the price. Wine pairing suggestions. Good location for a pre show dinner, Barbican Centre around the corner.
J. A.
Pretty amazing place for eating some game or hearty British dishes. The daily specials are the star here, great flavour and big portions. The environment is quite nice, kind of takes you out of the city and looks like a modem countryside restaurant.
L. D.
We were in London for a Sunday matinee at the Barbican and stumbled across the Jugged Hare. The excellent staff managed to squeeze us in for Sunday lunch, and what a treat it was. The food was exceptional and the service faultless. We will be back!
S. A.
We booked this as opposite the Barbican. We cannot fault the service, food or the atmosphere. We went there for a special lunch time celebration meal. All our meals were perfect. The staff were attentive and paid attention to all our needs. The food was fresh well cooked seasoned and to specific dietary requirements. 5* all round. Forgot to take photos of more meals or deserts to excited to eat them. Absolutely want to go again.
J. T.
Decor is very heavy on the taxidermy and mounted animal heads (deer, rabbits etc.) so you've been warned if you don't like that kind of thing! While the establishment is known for its meat dishes, there's a variety of vegetarian and plant based dishes as well.
Staff were warm and welcoming and all wearing masks. At least one person in a booking is required to track and trace, but ideally everyone does it, just for the safety and well-being of others.
I had the sweet potato cake main (sweet potato cake, grilled broccoli, sweetcorn relish, crispy kale), and it was so delicious! Also had the Smoked Cornish mackerel rillette, which was also very well done.
a. b.
Friendly staff and a good selection of beers. Didn’t eat but the menu looked very nice.
a. v. e.
Lovely place, friendly service. We went there after visiting the Barbican and had a Sunday roast: meat, gravy, veggies and roast potatoes were excellent but Yorkshire pudding was a bit 'flat' and a delicious bavette with mash potatoes.
D. W.
Ate here are part a deal with the Montcalm hotel. I booked dinner for 8.30 and let them know we were dining as part of the offer.
On arrival I was glad we had booked as it was very busy so one might have expected a delay with service, however we were not informed of this and had to let them know we were dining as part of an offer as there is a special menu.
Starter was delicious but it went down hill from there. Our main arrived before our wine (we didn't order wine until after starter as received a glass of prosecco at the start of the meal). Desert was nothing really to should about.
Service was very slow, had to wait to long to get/pay for the bill. Our coats were collected from the cloak room and dumped on us.
I would possibly drink in the bar area but very put off by the restaurant and wouldn't recommend.
D. S.
Lovely gastropub located between Moorgate and Barbican Stations. The decor is very striking; comprising oak flooring, red leather seating and a collection of stuffed and mounted animals.
Specialising in game and Sunday roasts, you definitely need to book to avoid disappointment. Even then, however, options sell out and you can be waiting a while in-between courses.
A good selection of both beers and wines. I really cannot wait for it to reopen!
A. K.
I think this is a great place. It's very unique and is different to other pubs but I think that adds to it's flair. They have a great selection of beers, spirits wines and soft drinks. There is a great restaurant as well and the staff are great.
R. S.
Came for the Christmas menu. Lovely decor (though vegetarians may not appreciate the mounted heads on the walls). Great friendly service. The food was great and filling.
Came back for the normal menu. Service and food still very good.
K. O.
Had a lovely bottomless brunch late one Saturday afternoon. Jugged Hare and venison were delicious but highlight was the service from Abbie.
Great afternoon all round.
m. o.
Absolutely lovely. My company held its Xmas party here and the staffs were so nice. The food was really good too.
J. D.
Fantastic menu and lovely staff who put up with my friend and I chatting instead of ordering. The food was delicious. Not the cheapest of places but well worth the extra few quid. Look forward to going back
T. F. T.
Food and customer service is great but it does get really busy. Good that people who are only drinking are separated from people who are dining.
S. K.
Really enjoyed our visit here. Bottomless brunch. We upgraded to the champagne and were never left with an empty glass. Great attentive service. Scoth egg was amazing, as was the rabbit loin. Sticky toffee and cheeseboard are proper tasty too! Would definitely go back and recommend to anyone 👍
J. T.
Not the pub to take your vegan friend! Did not stay for the food but found a great brown beer on tap. Sambooks Brewery, Brown Dog for my taste, smooth. Everywhere you look are images of wild game. Descending to the washroom you'll find a window displaying a how the meat may be cut for your meal! Vegans welcome but some of the ambiance may disturb.
W. A.
A very lively gastro pub which likes to showcase British food. Duck, geese and even indigenous lobster is offered in a very cosy and friendly atmosphere. It is the details such as bread sauce and Yorkshire puddings that make this a uniquely British experience
D. B.
Totally loved this bar. Didn't get chance to try the restaurant but loved the bar. Lots of animal heads mounted so beware if this sort of thing bothers you. I loved the decor however.
Z. Z. N.
Prides itself for the game season. Lots of stuffed animals and food was delicious indeed. Only problem was that they seemed to have forgotten to serve our main courses and we had to chase for them
B. X.
Came to London over the weekend to visit my grandad and came here twice it was that good Food was lovely amazing staff all so lovely!! made me and my mum feel so welcome What an amazing place thank you for such a lovely experience xoxo
F. V.
Amazing interior , very clean. -1 star for the beer selection. Very IPA heavy. How about a BK lager or Camden Hells?
C. D.
Even though it is part of a larger restaurant group, The Jugged Hare, delivered on its promise of traditional English game. Taxidermy around the restaurant served as reminders of the meals being offered.
Last night I went for the seasonal namesake of the place, Jugged Hare, which is more a English version of Lapin a La Cocotte, served in a earthenware pitcher with a British twist of cabbage/bacon and creamed potatoes.
Oh, and it’s cooked in a liquid that includes the hare’s blood.
Don’t skip out on the traditions of the region.
C. S.
Lovely restaurant! Went here for a meal, I was very impressed! And that was great experience the servers were and how great the food was. Definitely suggest a trip to this place!
J. W.
Chiswell St Dining, The Brewery & The Jugged Hare, they come as a package and I do like this pub. V.busy & noisy at 6pm with the after work crowd, it thins down by 8pm as the city workers either shuffle on home, or into the restaurant for dinner - a colleague informs me that "the game is excellent". I just like the beer and the atmosphere!
E. D.
Absolutely love this place. I come for a roast as often as I can as it’s by far and away the best in London. Fantastic food, brilliant wine + excellent staff.
R. N.
Not my first time and won’t be the last! Even if you aren’t in the area, make your way here for a meal that’s well worth the visit!
+ Great game, tasty food, brilliant choices
+ lovely ambiance and never feels ‘too’ busy
+ Feels like you are outside of London
R. W.
Only stopped for a quick pint but was hopping with after work people. Lots of beers on cask and looked like a decent cocktail selection. Food did look interesting and may stop back to try something a bet off the beaten path.
P. S.
Excellent restaurant, handy for Barbican attendees. Their specialty is, of course, Jugged Hare! Delicious food and great drinks. Friendly, efficient service.
J. B.
Had a bottomless brunch- service and food very good. Can change drinks as part of bottomless deal which is great.
J. W.
Beautiful spot for a drink and/or dinner. Bar food is great too, the scotch egg is next level
C. R.
Firstly great decor and amazing staff! The food was absolutely delicious and the wine topped it off.
D. B.
A busy, lively pub. Lots of atmosphere.... close to Barbican Theatre so might be a good meeting point, pre theatre
O. O.
This restaurant is amazing, the food is great and really nicely presented, the staff is very friendly, you will eat some really interesting game if you want to, but be mindful that this place is really busy, so reserve in advance.
J. B.
Friendly service, good beer and a decent burger. Still quite compared to pre pandemic times
M. F.
Superb service. Impeccably clean. Nice change of beers from your regular pale ales. Country decor includes stuffed animals. Unfortunately didnt get to try the food but the restaurant smelt like my grandmothers kitchen on a Sunday. I may have to return...
S. R.
Really nice (though pricey) food and wonderful old pub. Can be noisy.
N. T.
Always a pleasure. Welcoming staff and excellent food. Fresh ingredients, perfectly prepared plust a good wine list. My favourite London restaurant. Perfect after the Barbican.
B. R.
Popped in for a quick drink before a show and the atmosphere was great! Good selection of drinks and the scotch eggs was to die for!
L. J.
Great service by members of staff and always attentive. Food was excellent and full of flavour. Vast range of wine and even the most affordable is good quality wine.
C. M.
Great city pub with very nice food.
P. C.
I've never eaten here, so this review is of the pub rather than the restaurant. Very busy early in the evening, but by 9 it's easy to find somewhere to sit. I think their house IPA is excellent. Dropped a star in this review as the glass collected took my glass when I wasn't looking and it still had about 15 mm of beer in it. I saw just in time and was able to retrieve it from the glass collection area.
L. S.
Excellent Christmas menu, very attentive and pleasant staff, couldn't recommend highly enough. Thank you.
G. A.
Not tried the food on this occasion, but looks absolutely top notch, especially for game. Will therefore reserve the extra star for a food visit. Though emphasise is clearly on quality food, there is a reasonable area for the casual drinker. Team here are efficient and uniformed. As I say, I'll be back for some of the partridge, hare or grouse.
J. M. F.
Fabulous gastro pub! Inventive delicious food from starters to pudding it was an absolute pleasure. Great value and staff really engaging. Some excellent chefs there in the background. Cert to recommend
A. B.
Popped into the pub prior to visiting the Barbican. Had a lovely pint of Jugged Hare Pale Ale, G&T for my partner and a bowl of Olives. All for the bargain price of £15.00. It is London...
S. S.
Try the jugged hare - delish. Nice buzzy but classy Saturday day time atmosphere. A class venue.
N. O.
There is a pub area that gets very busy at the entrance and restaurant is at the back. Food is focused around game as a theme, lots of variety and cooked in a classic British/French style. It was standard as expected.
J.
Great place to eat friendly staff. Great taxidermy on the walls and around the windows. Lots of different people young and old. Even see you can take dogs down stairs.
R. C.
Nice food, staff were very good. Seems busy with all sorts of people, from family's to business lunches.
H. T.
Bought chips with Parmesan and truffle. They brought normal chips and after asking they've claimed that only french fries come with truffle and Parmesan. However on their own menu they don't have French fries...
See attached menu.
Only after complaining twice they brought the right item.
S. C.
Great pub, Sambrook beers on tap and plenty of taxidermy!
P. T.
Very good food & great service! Atmosphere is great and there is big tables for 7-10 customers.
A. P.
A nice meal with very friendly staff and prompt service in nice surroundings. I'm looking forward to a return visit here sometime in the future...
D. H.
Open style pub with a unique menu of delicious pies and small plates.
A. R.
I'm an American in London so the food culture is a bit different but the food was delicious. You have to try the house pies!
B. C.
As a Barbican resident, I have been coming here for quite a long time and I was glad to see them reopen after COVID. Both the pub and the restaurant at the back have great food and drinks. At the pub their own Jugged Hare ale is worth a try, and their bar snacks are excellent - Decadent scotch eggs, black pudding croquettes, etc. The bar also operates a reduced menu mostly focused on proper pies and burgers. Their burger used to be one of the best in London (to my taste) until unfortunately they started serving it always well done - I think it is due to regulation. It continues to be a good burger but miles away from where it was before. I had one today and was surprised to see they have moved away from the chunky chips they used to do into standard fries. Pity! The restaurant is also worth a visit, especially during game season - The Jugged Hare when they have it is worth a try!
G.
Excellent food and knowledgeable and very friendly staff. Would thoroughly recommend. Plenty of seasonable game on the menu
j. m.
Good food, nice and friendly service.
m. m.
Good staff, awesome taxidermy and good selection of British beer, especially if you love thornbridge. Didn’t get chance to try the food but it did look pretty good
M. S.
Great service and delicious food. Always a good choice. Perhaps could have a few options on the wine list (but I am being picky!)
a. h.
Excellent food, good beer and great service. Worth a visit, particularly if you like to eat game in season!
E. S.
A really lovely evening, the pub felt so warm and cosy, perfect for this time of year. The staff were taking the Covid measures seriously which was very reassuring to keep everyone safe. They were attentive throughout the evening. The Venison scotch-egg was magical, would return for that alone! Main course was the Venison haunch which was just as good, cooked to perfection. Will need to go back to try their Roast on a Sunday.
C. C.
5 star Sunday Roast and fixings. Creamy cauliflower, carrots, cabbage, and perfectly cooked meats. Refined gravy and crispy yorkshire pudding to match.
J. B.
Excellent food and drink at a (reasonably) good price for London. Definitely worth it when doing a bottomless lunch for 9.99 on top of food!
R. B.
Lovely food, went for a Sunday roast. Unfortunately out of the special starter but we did have a late lunch booking. Very good service. Our Italian waitress was absolutely lovely and very attentive. Great lunch all round.
S. M.
Popped in for pre and post theatre drinks. Friendly bar staff. Bar menu was perfect for light snack.
r. t.
It was the first night out after lockdown and I couldnt expected better hospitality than at the Jugged Hare. The service was amasing and the food and wine recommendations by Nick and his staff were impeccable. Will definitely be back.
K. J.
My girlfriend was scared be all the headstones on the wall but good beer and lovely staff
I. C.
Had drinks here on New Year's Eve and it was fantastic.
Recommend their Espresso Martinis!
C. M.
Beautiful pub ideal for a drink or a meal when visiting the Barbican
H. G.
Food was incredible and service was very attentive. They have a very reasonable set menu with a smaller selection of dishes from the main menu. Steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the sticky toffee pudding was amazing! Everything was delicious, would definitely recommend!
C. H.
Great Beer and cider. Food looked good. Great caricature pub.
D. D.
Venue, atmosphere, staff and meal all excellent. Would visit again and recommend...
D. D.
Nice food a mix of upscale pub favourites and seasonal game options. I've visited a handful of times and our meals have always quite nicely prepared and served. They do quite a nice Sunday roast as well.
It would be nice if they had a slightly more varied beer selection.
P. W.
Great lunch, decent service. Thanks
H.
Very trendy place, went on a very busy day however got served and managed to get from one side to the other..
P. I.
Really good pub in a great location. The theme of the pub is hunting and game. There is a lot of taxidermy around so if you're not comfortable with that it's something to consider.
The food is really good, the Sunday roast is delicious.
The drink selection is quite good too.
As a dessert I recommend the pecan pie.
Their set menu for the weekend doesn't really make sense it's a couple of pounds cheaper than ordering individually.
C. A.
Good pub, lots of taxidermy around which I though was very striking. Good beer options, we didn’t have dinner here but ordered a few bar snacks and they were tasty. Can get pretty busy. I’d recommend to check it out if you’re in town.
T. S.
We had a lovely dinner here, on a barrel! Highly recommend.
C.
Great traditional pub with Cask Ale and animal bust decoration.
C. B.
I have had the pleasure of having lunch here twice. On both occasions the food was fantastic and the service attentive without being intrusive. The staff are very pleasant as are the surroundings. It's medium priced with a good menu. I can't wait go back a third time. Very handy for the Barbican as well. Easily five stars.
G. F.
Nice English pub where you can find cheap delicious food
A. B.
Came here for a graduation meal and wasn’t expecting to have such a lovely meal! Very interesting decor and was served incredibly well by a waiter called Tudor. Had lovely food and wine (of which were all recommended). Being a family of 7 with some difficult family members, we were dealt with very well by Tudor who was very attentive and adjusted his service approach to allow us to enjoy the evening as well as getting our order in good time. Would definitely go here again whenever I’m at the Barbican Centre! Will 100% get the steak with bacon cabbage again!
A. D.
Good selection of beers, decent food.
A. D.
Very good food, specializing in game. The tastes are rich and complex. We went for Sunday Roast. Servers are adequate, the next level up of wait-staff are highly knowledgeable and first-class. Recommended.
d.
A very decent pub with good beer and nice staff
B. A.
Great Bar staff and plenty of advice on hand for all the different cocktails, my wife's now got a headache!! Great night though thanks!
T. K.
Service is attentive and reactive, however the food is too pricey for what it is (nothing special). I left the place with the feeling that my money (38 pounds for starter + main + beer) would have been better spent somewhere else. For 23 pounds, I expect something more interesting than very basic French fries and a few pieces of rostbeef.
T. H.
Visited with two kids on Easter. The kids were put off by the taxidermy...for about 5 seconds then they were excited to find the hedgehog and see the pig by the bathrooms. The dinner was great and the kid friendly options were excellent as well. Best sticky toffee pudding we had on our trip and we had quite a few.
J. H.
Amazing food, great service! My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and we shared the T bone steak for two - it was incredible! Such good quality meat and cooked perfectly. The service from Kim, our waitress, was great too - very attentive and very professional.
R. W.
Visited The Jugged Hare for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable. I had the venison salami and the sardine entree - both of which were delicious. Partner had ribeye steak that was cooked perfectly. Desserts also surprising!
G. J. R.
If you're into gamey British cuisine, if you're vegetarian you're out of luck.
J. M.
Really, really nice food! I had delicious roast chicken with massive portions. All the vegetables and sauces were excellent.
One of our party had the mussels which were amazing. This place is brilliant, quite lively but enough space to eat. Book ahead for a sunday.
Highly recommended, i loved it!
L. A.
Been here a few times, both for drinks and to eat. Loved the food and the decor. This is a place for meat eaters, if you are vegetarian or vegan you might find the location uncomfortable. Stairs to the toilets, hand towels supplied, which I prefer to hand driers, personally! The bar can get very busy with post work drinkers but staff still manage to serve you fairly quickly.
D. K.
Good concept of game gastro pub. But needs more work on the food. The hare eclair pate was excellent. The beef burger came too dry from overcooking.
Interesting wine selection
B. L.
Lovely looking place with great ambience. Menu sounds amazing and food looks great but didn't quite live up to the high price tag. My friend had the Sunday roast and she said her beef was cold, the veg sides were also bland and boring. My kid terrine starter was good but I've had better terrines for less money. My friends cod cheeks starter was a nice flavour but overcooked. My wild boar collar main was a little overcooked and the cider sauce didn't taste of cider, the hot pot it came with was great though. We were shocked by how small the portion was for the price of it and had to order more sides when it arrived. The sticky toffee pudding was brilliant. I found the waiters quite cold and unfriendly at times. All in all, good food, but for the prices they are charging they need to raise there game. Pardon the pun.

5th or so visit in 3 years (would go more but we are not local & the cost reflects the quality). Roast beef today & I will struggle to find somewhere that does it better. Very lovely service.

Nice Sunday roast, friendly staffs and beautiful atmosphere

Ive recently moved to London from the States and I can say this is one of the best pubs so far that I have been to. The food is out of this world and the staff are friendly. The chunky fries are really amazing.

Nice setting, great service and food.
F. G.
Good atmosphere however if you are vegetarian this might not be for you as the walls are covered in the heads of dead animals. The food is expensive but seemingly good. Some items are a bit pretentious looking and seem to cost about 3x what they are worth. Don't ask for vegetarian meal. My dad once beat me with jumper cables just for asking him. Good pub.
U. P.
Handy pub located where there aren't many pubs around. The drinks are slightly expensive. It's a small pub - There's not much standing space near the bar or many tables with seats, so it's always a squeeze at busy times. There is a separate gourmet restaurant attached with plenty of tables but which is always full as it's very popular. In the summer there is extra seating across the road in a space with some artificial turf and some tables.
L. H.
I've eaten here a few times and the food is consistently good. Lots of meat and all dishes are very rich. The menu is pricey but there are enough good value dishes to satisfy me. They certainly play to the local City customers' price range.
Weekend atmosphere is much nicer, quiet and relaxed. Weekdays tend to be busy and loud, lots of guffawing and assertive discussions.
A. D.
Nice place, professional staff, great sounding menu but unremarkable food.
Roast chicken looked fantastic but was a very bland bird. Haggis croquettes were the highlight of the meal.
Decent beer on cask and a good wine list.
Ok for a drink & a snack. Better options in the vicinity for lunch or dinner.
H. W. (.
To be honest we naively expected pub grub and were already seated by the time we realised the menu was all game! Wouldn't have been my first choice, being vegetarian, but I ordered the "vegetarian" (there was one option and it didn't specify any more details than that) and it was a pretty decent vegetable Wellington. The rest of my party had a whole pheasant and a burger respectively. All in all I'd recommend it, the service and food were good, and I suspect they'd have made a bespoke veggie option if I hadn't liked the sound of what they offered. Pub was alright but very small.
S. K.
Great little gastropub - excellent service and quality food
I. J.
Nice place for a beer after the theatre. Good joice of beer amd friendly staff
T. S.
Better for the more adventurous eater, high quality but the decor can be off putting. I recommend the black pudding and all meat is cooked to perfection. The biggest pitfall was the noise level, a busy open kitchen plus peak times can get loud.
A. M.
Safety precautions are observed, the place is impressive!
N. Y.
Great atmosphere great pub highly recommended it
R. C.
We had a pre-theatre meal. Perfect.
T. D.
Great place for a mid-week lunch that isn't a wine bar! Good ales on tap (Sambrook's White Gold) but the sharer steak and chips is getting close the the wrong side of "saw you coming" priced as it is at £65 which is £5 or £6 per slice of meat. Also handy for a pint on the way back from Whitecross St food market!
Y. O.
The food is properly amazing. We had quite a selection between the 4 of us. Only thing that was a slight disappointment was the scallop, for which you only get one. Otherwise, every other dish was spot on. Beers are great too!
A. J.
Great beers - including some of the rarer Young's vintages. The pies are tasty, and a good reaaon to visit. Most importantly, it's a quiet pub, with a really lovely atmosphere.
S.
I went to The Jugged Hare on Sunday for the Sunday Roast...what a nice surprise! Meat was very well cooked and very tasty. The service is professional, fast and very efficient. Great selection of wines. Reservation is recommended, since it's very crowded for lunch on Sunday.
M. M.
I had the burrata & beetroot starter and the stick pork belly as main- the starter was ok and my main was very delicious but it could be bigger :-)
My husband had the scallops and burger- he liked a lot
Otherwise the service was very friendly and the pub is very beautiful
R. S.
Great pub with excellent food, the Tomapork was a highlight, perfectly cooked with a delicious pork belly sauce. The veal tongue was also noteworthy, probably the best tongue dish I've ever tasted. The beer selection is equally impressive, highly recommended all round.
R. G.
We returned to try and find a brilliant wine we had a while ago but the restaurant host didn't have it. Instead he made it his mission to find us another perfect wine which really made us feel special. Great staff, food and wine. Highly recommended!
G. M.
Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy British game cookery, specially at this time of year.
Can get a little noisy as the bar can get quite busy but not intrusively so. Excellent waiting staff who are attentive without 'hovering'.
J. S.
The place looks so amazing from the outside, unfortunately the meal and ales were just so-so for the price.
P. S.
Nice pub filled with stuffed wild animal and wide selection of game dishes on the menu. The burger is fantastic here, sometimes they mix beef with game to put a twist to the regular patty. Nice place to eat something different from the average!
M. J.
Very fancy restaurant. Nicely arranged. Guinness was perfect, the food as well.
R. W.
I've only stopped off here for a drink so far and will amend my review accordingly when I've eaten here.
But, so far I like it very much.
The decor is unashamedly classic upmarket themed "pub". Loads of stuffed animals to support the name.
That's not to say the pub could have been here for an age already.
What I really liked was the way the bar staff really meshed together. One filled ice into a whisky glass unbidden. They are smart, professional and appear to work well together, and that spells " service".
T. M.
Went for Sunday lunch. Good quality well cooked meat. Sides were unremarkable. Dining room is nice but a bit soulless. The bar area looks more fun. Good wine list.
D. N.
Definitely a 5 star. Started with lamb shoulder .. and for a girl which usually doesn't rate well starters this one was good. But main dish was the star, pork belly with apple sauce and gravy - the right amount of sweet, meaty, crispy and hearty... Definitely definitely recommend coming here. Above average prices - about £27-35 a person but totally worth it!!
Z. U.
Overpriced and undersized. Staff are very accommodating, helping me adapt the vegetarian main to a vegan version, but it was the size of a starter and double the price. I understand that meat dishes are the speciality here, but then simply don't even offer a vegetarian/vegan option if it's going to be a parody of a meal. £15 not well spent, didn't fill me even for an hour.
A. P.
Very classy pub in the heart of London. Can be busy on Thursday and over the weekend as is placed very close to big corporations and Barbican centre. People prefer to have a drink after theatre or concert dinner. It is one of the cleaniest pubs in London so far. I love their White Russian cocktail but also the other drinks they offer. Do not expect very fancy cocktails because it's still a pub and not a cocktail bar.
C. C.
Lovely old pub, great atmosphere. Haven't eaten here but the restaurant looks very nice and the menu interesting. Only downside is the bar can get noisy in a boomy unpleasant way, only when completely packed - possibly due to the hard floor & high ceilings.
J. D.
Somewhat disappointing experience. The service seamed rather slow and not too enthusiastic despite restaurant not being full. My ramp stake was tasteless and didn’t come with any salad. My husband has also commented about his dish being just average. For the price we expected a much better dinner.
J. H.
My friend is obsessed with this place, mainly because of the homemade scotch egg! Which I have to admit was pretty damn good.
All the snack that we ordered were.
Good beer and wines, the location isn't ideal for weekends but it is nicer then as it is quieter.
It is very busy after work. It can be a little pricey.
S. “. H.
Come on a Sunday with an empty stomach and expect to leave with a food baby. This upscale gastro pub decorated with all manner of game taxidermy knows how to do a good roast. Try to book a table because it can get busy with small families and groups. We had to sit at the bar and while it was interesting to see the chefs work, it did get pretty hot.
You cannot go wrong with their Sunday roast chicken. The half roast rotisserie chicken with sage stuffing was incredibly succulent and the golden crispy skin did not disappoint. It came with all the works: Yorkshire pudding, duck fat roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables of perfectly cooked carrots and cabbage, gravy and bread sauce and the most delectable macaroni cheese. All for just £18.50! It was well worth it and staff were really polite and helpful.
M. J. P.
Great pub in a great location near to the Barbican.
Fine pub classics with a lot of game options. Decent selection of beers, ales and wines (they have Slovenian wines...a rare find in London!).
The service and the atmosphere is definitely more similar to a proper restaurant.
Stylish decor, especially because of the busy kitchen that you can see from the dining room. The rooms downstairs for private events are quite impressive as well.
Priced as a gastropub, but definitely worth it.
D. R.
Delicious food. Good service.
M. K.
Good selection of drinks. Higher range prices, given the location and concept, I guess. We came at a relatively unpacked time during Sunday, but the bartender was very slow to pour the drinks for us and was looking down on us. Anyway, its a good place for drinks with friends, so I might be coming back at some point in future. (not a good place for Green Peace kind of people)
K. M.
Went before a play at the Barbican and our main as a part of the pretheatre deal was horrifically late. We somehow got behind a big table and when they finally rushed it out we had to gulp it down and leave, arriving seconds to spare before lights down. The food, the decor is great and the manager did scare up a decent discount for the delay, but in terms of tight for time, we probably wouldn't have been able to settle the bill and watch the play if we hadn't had my husband who had only joined us for dinner. Otherwise, like I said, lovely place and hopefully a one off. They also hang dead animals on the wall which might not be to everyone's taste.
S. W.
Amazing! The food is interesting and I would argue a unique menu. I had the signature dish "jugged hare" and was not disappointed. I looked across and saw others with the likes of "half a pig head", but they also do civilized food such as steak, which will not disappoint. The environment is awesome - you will be eating surrounded by stuffed animals.
B. W.
Awesome! I spent 10 days in London and ate here 7 nights at this restaurant. It started with Sunday roast, one of the best I’ve had in London. The Yorkshire pudding was perfect! The staff and the chefs were also awesome. Make a few trips to this restaurant and they treat you like a king. I sat at the bar in front of the kitchen and had great conversation with them all. After roast beef, on subsequent meals I had red legged partridge, wild boar, venison, pork loin, mutton roast, Jugged Hare (rabbit in a jug) and pigeon in pastry. There was so much variety you could enjoy every night. The desserts, eggy bread, rice pudding, and to die for sticky toffee pudding. You can’t go wrong with this restautant. Wine selection was good as well. Stefan and Chef were great guys and may come visit me in Tennessee. Don’t miss this place when you are in London and try something different. The wild game variety is unforgettable. Thanks Stefan and Chef for making this such a great experience. I won’t miss coming every time I’m in London. Looking forward to your visit here. Brad

One of my favourite pubs in the city. From the moment you walk in, you know that you're in for a treat. I imagine that most people come here for the outstanding food, but its wonderful bar at the front of the building is inviting enough to drop in for a pint of ale too.
Food is by no means cheap, but you're served with seasonal, quality ingredients in meals prepared with care. Highlights for me are the black pudding croquettes, and the jugged hare itself (when in season). The only time I've ever had a bad experience at the Jugged Hare was when I had a massively salty risotto, but considering my number of visits is into double figures, that's not enough to mark the place down.
If you plan to go to eat here, make sure you book ahead. The restaurant is often very busy, and I imagine you'd struggle to get a table as a walk-in.
Not for vegetarians, although some of the dead animals on the walls look quite cute.
L.
If you are an extreme animal lover then this place is not for you, as every wall is adorned with the heads of dead animals! I actually really liked this place though, even the decor! Bar staff were friendly and drinks were reasonably priced. The only downside was that there were not enough places to sit.
r. b.
The food is very good and the menu has plenty of choice, provided you eat meat. Their wine selection is excellent, the decor is tasteful and the service very good though it's a little on the pricey side.

Sunday roast is good and tasty. Portion was great! You must be very hungry to finish it all. Gravy and sauce - it was nice to be separated amongst the food but it was not commensurate to the portion, can do with a bit more. Attendants "just okay". All is all, lack a bit of that Ump!
s. w.
At the weekend this well designed gastro pub is not too crowded. A relaxed clientele but not a great place for vegetarians! Too many stuffed animals on the walls but their tea was very nice.
S. J.
My wife and I booked for a 5.30pm pre-show meal. Great atmosphere and good service. Not overly hungry so we ordered light. Mussels (which were good) salad and a scallops starter. The menu lied - it was a scallop starter - one scallop for 14 pounds - not good value in my book.
D. M.
The Sunday roast is the best I had in London.
It could even improve but I was massively impressed by the food.
But that black curly haired French waiter with glasses is the biggest d*** head ever. Straight from the beginning we got the vibe he couldn't be arsed to be there. If you don't like been a waiter go home! We spent £120 for three people's Sunday roast. The least one can expect is to hear a good bye. But not this looser. Too arrogant to do the basics of hospitality.
W. W.
I've always wanted to have some food here, and this was the first time I visited. As expected, the prices are above average, but I do enjoy the food. I had a meaty pie of the day, it made me happy... My friend and I were both surprised by the service though. They didn't seem to know what was happening.
J. M.
Great gastropub with a lot of space and fabulous private dining room.
Food and wine is excellent, but you can tell they mostly service City workers and bankers because the waiting staff upsell at every opportunity.
Gulls eggs were on offer when we visited at £7.50/egg and we enjoyed the suckling pig between 4 at £45/head.
I would recommend and eat here again, but be prepared to spend.
Jugged Hare is part of a small group in London which are consistently good.
C. O.
Great place for Sunday lunch, very good service and food and very well priced, definitely worth a visit, i will definitely be returning
A. M.
Only popped in for a drink after show at Barbican. Mostly a restaurant to right of main door. Looked quite a nice ambience in there. Only went to pub part. Not much seating that I could see. Some large barrels were there for tables to place your beers on and congregate around. Might go back to suss out the restaurant.
A. R.
Great selection of beer, cider and wine. There is a very relaxed atmosphere in the bar area where you can chill out over an old cask or lean by the bar a study the many hare species on the wall.
The restaurant is well laid out and has two fantastic booths at the back ideal for hosting dinner parties or meetings.
The choice of food is excellent and well varied although probably not the best place to visit if you are a vegetarian.
I'd recommend asking the waiter to explain the dishes if you aren't familiar with them as they are very experienced and can talk you through how it is cooked by the chef. Special recommendation for the "Jugged Hare" dish as this classic literally melts in your mouth and is great for a lunch time treat!
Advice - book up early as this place fills up fast and there;s generally a queue for the odd table at the restaurant.
T. R.
Awesome restaurant! 100% recommend getting the Jugged Hare - it tastes absolutely sublime and is presented really nicely. It's a really great sharing option. The dining room is really cosy with really interesting features dotted around the place and the open kitchen is fantastic.
The staff are warm and attentive, the service was efficient and thoughtful. Could not recommend this place more - especially for pre or post-theatre meals as it's right outside the Barbican Centre!
B. P.
Bit of a city boy gastropub or restaurant. It's good though; food is high quality and tasty. I had a delicious steak and the portion size was decent. It's expensive; but there's a good atmosphere. If, as I say, a bit "city".
R. C.
Nothing has let us down... simply exquisite.
Service has been personal and un-intrusive. Food melted in your mouth... we had the roast!
Superb wine list
Prices are higher than a weatherspoons... you get more than value for money...
Couldn't recommend it more.
K. V.
watering hole best the Barbican, offers outdoor seating and Guinness on tap (among other things)
D. D.
Good food good atmosphere but quite noisy when busy
R. R.
Good food although I felt we made a mistake choosing the seafood over the meat that seems to be the speciality here. The haggis croquettes were a great twist on a classic for example.
Service was very slow and at times confused despite there being a large number of staff on.
J. L.
There’s a restaurant here!
Honestly didn’t realise they had a restaurant, the bar is always full so I never went in.
Don’t make the same mistake, the restaurant is ample and the food is spectacular. I had the steak, absolutely delicious.
Would definitely visit again. Great for a business meeting as it’s fairly quite and the service is great even when busy.
M. R.
A very impressive city gastropub with a mouthwatering menu and an evident passion for food. While the pub area was quite small and cramped, there is a spacious dining room with smart décor and stylish table settings. The traditional British menu serves authentic ingredients alongside an extensive selection of wines. Friendly, knowledgable waiters served our excellent food from the busy, open kitchen. Quite pricey if you're looking for simple pub grub - this is better for a more formal meal that you can afford to savour.
R. K.
This is what English restaurant cooking should be more like, instead of trying to recreate tropical cuisines in northern Europe. I had the kid goat & my wife had the wild boar, both well executed. The rice pudding for dessert was as good as L'ami Jean's in Paris. It's probably a touch expensive, although the Free run shiraz at £27.50 balanced the food cost & complimented well. Staff were lovely & let us change seats because of the cold when the door opened. Everyone else eating looked happy too.
D. G.
Attended one of thier special Game of Thrones themed evenings. Rob (not Barathian) and all the team did an excellent job of presenting the feastastic menu with a side of chat and entertainment. Tasteful, creative and really nicely executed (without a single execution, death or beheading in sight). Terrific evening out in a really great venue. Massive gratitude to the team front of house and in the kitchen.
C. W.
Incredible food and great decor inside. Had the rump roast which was really tasty and enough food to just have the main course. Also tried the jugged hare and lamb roast, both equally incredibly tasty
A. S.
New bar management really making an impact on providing great service
J. G.
Exteremly well executed pub food in a high-end Gastro environment which justifies the price tag by serving interesting/unusual British game and focusing on seasonal ingredients. Service was also very good.
We tried the roast beef, goat shoulder, a side of black pudding mac n' cheese and rhubarb crumble. Everything was totally delicious; however for the price tag you might reasonably expect a dish or two go a bit beyond comfort food and provide some surprise/delight. Would easily give a fifth star if it took just little bit of inspiration from St John and played it a tiny bit less safe.
A. B.
Great service, great food.
D. M.
Rate of 5star is for the Decor.
As an English country sporting person the decor is a delight to be within and experience/study.
ETM group have created a stunningly original environment.
Staff were all polite and friendly.
Can't comment on the food but if anything like the setting and also the beer it must be good.
As a person who eats a lot of wild game I could be too exacting to be a unbiased reviewer as to the food.
Worth the journey to visit and will return with friends soon.
N. B.
The menu is amazing... nothing says cosy winter pub food better than this place.. service is great, but your wallet will certainly know you enjoyed it here!!

A great find. A nice place with awesome stuffed animals around the room. Great wine selection. Food was lovely, a slightly wider selection of game would have been nice. Booths at the back would be a great place for a large party.
A. T.
Great food, drink and dessert choice. Very comfortable, staff are very welcoming. Attentiveness among staff could be a little better as to which customer is waiting for service, but this is a very minor complaint.

Really lovely quirky bar and restaurant. Very cosy and friendly atmosphere. The food is tasty if not a bit pricey but overall worth a visit.
P. S.
Nice environment, but it can be very crowded at busy times and on Fridays. It is not very big, but overall the staff are friendly and the vibe is good!
The animals on the walls are a little creepy, but we can ignore that.
B. G.
Sorry I incorrectly reviewed this. I bet this one is excellent compared to the one I went to near Victoria station. I will be giving this a try.
T. S.
Better for the more adventurous eater, high quality but the decor can be off putting. I recommend the black pudding and all meat is cooked to perfection. The biggest pitfall was the noise level, a busy open kitchen plus peak times can get loud.

Went for Sunday lunch. Good quality well cooked meat. Sides were unremarkable. Dining room is nice but a bit soulless. The bar area looks more fun. Good wine list.

I had my first proper English pie here. Venison and boar with a delicious crust. The beer selection was well done. We walked out quite chuffed to have eaten here.
A. T.
Great food, drink and dessert choice. Very comfortable, staff are very welcoming. Attentiveness among staff could be a little better as to which customer is waiting for service, but this is a very minor complaint.
D. E.
Nice gastropub. Good service. Heavy meat focus. Only reason I came on to review was to strongly warn about the jugged hare: if you have not tried hare before and do not have a strong basis for thinking you are going to like it I would stay away (or at least see if you can smell/try a small bit or something first) as I (and everyone else at my table who smelled/tasted it) thought it was absolutely and remarkably disgusting. This is from someone with a broad palate and, before this, no aversion to game/hare!
L. P.
Lovely food and lovelier staff.
Z. G.
Great for meat eaters, but my vegetarian friends ate only chunky chips. We sat for a long time, didn't feel rushed. The staff here are so knowledgeable.
N. D.
Very tasty signature dish, served exactly as described; in a jug. The matching named beer is equally refreshing!
Watch out though, they added a £41 meal to our bill, which they quickly removed when we pointed it out! 1 star removed...
P. S.
Nice environment, but it can be very crowded at busy times and on Fridays. It is not very big, but overall the staff are friendly and the vibe is good! …

delicious Sunday lunch, excellent duck fat roasties, perfectly seasoned huge pillows of yorkshire pudding, super tasty rotissserie gravy and longhorn beef. Everything was spot on including the service & the relaxed friendly atmosphere
M. G.
Good bar with great interior and well trained friendly staff. Prices definitely upper end, but that fits the overall feel and clientele. Excellent varied bottle and cask beer selection
e.
Pints are nice but service and food are really slow. One rude waiter who was rather unpleasant - nice atmosphere.
J. H.
As tourists to London, we relied on reviews. The Jugged Hare did not disappoint. We so enjoyed our experience, we came back to eat there another night.

Fantastically tasty with a superb wine list. A little pricey for what it is but that's a function of the Barbican/city boy clientele. Still worth it for a solid game-led meal.
A. M.
Amazing 👌. 100% recommend when in London and looking for a festival of great meat
C. H.
Enjoyed the vegetarian food despite everything being very meat or fish based! We were in a private dining room and the food was well presented and very tasty. Lovely veg side dishes.
K. C.
Not your typical pub food. A little expensive but delicious and good quality. Great service. Would definitely come here again
T. D.
This is a lovely pub, beautifully decorated and very convenient for the Barbican, but it's hellishly busy. The staff are friendly but could be better managed. It wants to be a restaurant and it should probably go there.
S. A.
Passed by in the week as it seemed a city boy pub and that's not me, but at the weekend it was most enjoyable after an exhibition at Barbican. Good beer range, good staff and the food menu for the separate restaurant looked good.
A. s.
Like the pub, however, got charged 20 quid for a glass of wine. Are u 'avin a laugh?! Only asked for a glass of Pinot Noir that, earlier in the evening, had cost me a tenner.
D. H.
Lovely meal and great service. The pub itself has a good atmosphere and is relaxing. Good is proper pub grub. Prepared to a high standard and served and presented well.
S. B.
Had the half roast chicken. Chicken was good and not dry. Came with a variety of things, potatoes and carrots/cabbage as well as a bread stuffing and Yorkshire pudding. Was a lot to eat. Topped off with a nice brown gravy was perfect.
J. M.
Great pub!! Do Happy Hour 2 drinks for the price of one in August which is really rare for centre of London. Cool atmosphere as well.
A. K.
English food done well. Amazing Sunday roast with potatoes fried in duck fat. Beautiful Yorkshire pudding. Very friendly staff.
E. P.
Food... absolutely fabulous
Customer service brilliant
Thank you
D. N.
Nice enough pub. But not to my taste. It's themed on dead animals, loads of them everywhere on the walls. My beer was cloudy and only grudgingly replaced. It's also fiercely expensive.
S. M.
Lovely vibe. Staff are friendly and lovely. We just had a beer and snacks. If you like proper triple fried chips... this is your place !
L. P.
Some dishes were really good, particularly the starters, but we were disappointed with the mains. The rabbit was a bit thin on taste, and the plates and side dishes were lukewarm. The pudding was ok, just ok.
D. M.
Good service and great beer. Most dishes are fantastic but the wild boar collar was suprisingly short on flavour. Well worth a visit.
A. F.
Delicious food, accomplished service.
R. A.
Excellent food and a good location. The food is probably better than drinking here, as in the evenings due to its location it can get very busy! It's a bit above average prices in the area, but the staff are great.
a.
Nice place but some of the chefs have much attitude towards the new staff! ....might know their cooking job but they have poor communication skills ! Or just wanna show attitude ! ..o my God who is he ...?!
D. P.
Good service. Food expensive. Limited menu. Good wine.
S. T.
Superior gastro pub with an impressive collection of taxidermy. The jugged hare is seasonal so definitely order it of you visit during this time - it's a rich, gamey stew served in a vintage jug with loads of creamy mash to accompany. Oh and don't forget to order the black pudding croquettes to start, served with a Guinness sauce!
M. P.
Nice venue good beers friendly and helpful staff. Food was very good. We booked this for an event and were looked after by the bar to ensure we had a good time
R. R.
Great rotisserie and grill selection. They always have very exotic meat on offers ranging from squirel to seagull egg. Good choice of wine and beer as well
C. G.
You can count on Tom and Ed Martin, the gastropub stars, to amaze you. Each new address seems to be even better than the previous one when you did not think it possible. They just get everything right. The Jugged Hare is probably the most atmospheric, the best of the British touch. It has the warm, homey and welcoming feeling of a pub, lots of dark wood, beers taps with gorgeous enamel levels, beers from the Redemption Brewing Company, the Sambrooks Junction brewery, the house one too, a pale ale with citrus and spice notes. There is a touch of mystery too, with the fascinating collection of animals around the bar that just catch the eye, initiate the conversation with complete strangers, such beautiful poses, oh, have you see the robin? The hedgehog? People stay there, pint in hand, admiring, chatting. A little bit further is a magnificent wine cellar. The gourmet attitude rules here, the staff know their wine and cheese to perfection. The menu follows seasons, puts British artisans forward, forgotten ingredients too such as dandelion in salads. Dishes appeal to timeless traditions with modern skills - from Yorkshire wood pigeon and lentil dripping to diver scallops, mussels and brown shrimp gratin via a nettle, onion, blue cheese and quail egg tart… At the heart of the room is the rôtisserie - just follow your nose, it is just impossible to resist. The meat is roasted slowly and oh, you just want to try this. On the launch night, we were all queuing for it - so much fragrance, so juicy! One bite and you join the crowd again. You haven’t finished your first bun but you already want some more. Chips are served with gravy from the roast too. Just a few minutes from the Barbican – this is THE place to wow any of your friends. The quality of a top restaurant with the atmosphere of a Victorian pub. Splendid, just splendid.
K. F.
Really lovely quirky bar and restaurant. Very cosy and friendly atmosphere. The food is tasty if not a bit pricey but overall worth a visit.

A bit too posh - this used to be The King's Head, a proper nice pub with mediocre food and great atmosphere, full of music, technical theatre, and acting students and teachers from the nearby Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Now it's full of City people, with prices and decor which is entirely uninviting to the rich, diverse, interesting kind of crowd that spends a lot of time around the Barbican Centre.

An overpriced gastropub.
Nice interiors, but was asked £8.50 for a 150ml glass of white Chardonnay on a Saturday evening. I opted to rather go and buy the whole bottle for less at a Tesco Express nearby!

If you’re a Sunday Roast fan like me, then you need to know about The Jugged Hare. It’s right up there as one of my favourite places for a decent roast, with the added bonus of the restaurant and pub being one of the loveliest spots you could spend your Sunday in.
Walking through the pub at The Jugged Hare, we were seated at our table in the restaurant and handed menus. But we were only there for one thing, so it took us all of 10 seconds to glance at the menu and wait for our order to be taken. Except, of course I was asking for the gluten free option, and whilst this sadly meant no yorkshire pudding, the staff were super helpful and made sure the chef’s were aware of what I could and couldn’t eat.
A short wait later, our roast’s were placed in front of us. There was no messing around. The moment those veggies were on our plates, we discontinued all conversation and got stuck in. Everything was delicious. From the meat, to the veggies, to the gravy. All perfectly cooked, and all mouthwateringly (is that even a word?) good.
Lunch was demolished, in oooh about 8 minutes! Greedy we are. So greedy in fact, that although we were full, we decided that yes we must have dessert too.
We settled on the steamed banana cake with salted caramel and milk chocolate sorbet, because why on earth would you not choose that? And the chocolate pot with honeycomb because well, it was the only gluten free item on the menu, but I wasn’t complaining!
The steamed banana cake looked unbelievably good, and I’m told that’s exactly what it was. Sadly I didn’t get to eat any. Damn you gluten!!!! Thankfully my chocolate pot was 100% kickarse good. So I didn’t have dessert envy afterall. It was rich and chocolatey and creamy and delicious and and and I need to stop now, because it’s making me want to run down to Tesco and buy all the chocolate bars.
Soooo in conclusion, I am going back again for sure! And you should make a reservation and get yourself there on a Sunday!

Tried the famed Sunday Roast here and it was really quite ordinary! Reservations recommended for this place. Overall it was just ~okay and felt expensive, not quite value for money. Service here was great though!
R. D.
It’s just ok. The service is good and the wine list is good too. But I’d skip the food. My GF and I were excited to try it but we were a bit disappointed with the food. And it’s expensive.
S. L.
Stopped here for a quick pint.
Staff friendly and good range of beer. What more could you ask for?!
Oh and tasty olives too!

Quite a nice little place. I only stopped by on a Saturday to spend some time.
I enjoyed the drama between the two Spanish waiting staff and the pile of newspapers.
The pint wasn't up to much though, dirty pipes. urgh.
a.
Really good food so I would recommend highly. However the waiter talked me out of having their 2 signature dishes... Strange
E. T.
Only been in for drinks, but country/game themed pub with great selection of beer and wine and attentive staff. Walls are adorned with animals, so maybe not the best place for animal lovers!
M. D.
Absolutely fantastic. It is £££ but a great refined English menu with ingredients one doesn't not so often. Huge choice. You must book a table though, it's very busy.
G. C.
Lovely atmosphere. Great place to eat or to drop in at Gin O clock. Always call in when visiting the Barbican for a swift half. Nice friendly staff.
J. D.
Really nice pub, and restaurant looks amazing too. Only knock is that the beers (not inc. ales) on tap are pretty limited/boring. I think there's only two non superbrand on tap
P.
Pricey. Good food if you like game. Fast service. Fills quick any lunchtime. Booking advised. Will with a visit. Generally I object to pubs that auto add service charge this dropped star
A. B.
Amazing meal and atmosphere. Sticky toffee pudding to die for. Christmas me u with everything you'd expect
S. K.
I like this place, atmosphere is nice but is slightly pricey. However it is a gastropub.
£24 for a roast.
C. C.
Nicer than the average pub with a fairly large seating area on the restaurant side. Menu had some classic as well as unique options, and food was served quite promptly.
R. B.
Good bar, limited space but good range of beer and good service. A bit of a taxidermy/game theme throughout, so probably not for vegetarians. Very nice restaurant also.
D. K.
Pheasant was dry. Worst part was seeing "chips" on the menu and looking forward to chips and then receiving crisps - a very misleading aspect of the menu - you need to explain that if you order chips you will actually get what British people call crisps. Nice ambience though.
J. D.
Fantastic food. Really lovely staff both professionally and friendly. Was there on a Saturday and it was quite quiet
A.
Nice pub but VERY slow service (and I mean even if you're the only person waiting) They seem to have 2 or 3 people behind the bar at all times but almost always it's just one of them serving drinks while the others chat waiting for the glass washer to finish, bizzare!?
S. R.
The rump steak 200 grams - perfect, the fries are perfect! Everything is really tasty and there is nice atmosphere. Very nice place!
C. M.
Have been here a few times and absolutely love the place. The food is delicious, wines perfect, atmosphere comfortable and staff really helpful. Definitely a winner!
J. S.
Good atmosphere, good beers, friendly staff and decent food. If you are a meat eater go for the scotch egg!
S.
Great city pub just near the Barbican. Went in for a post concert drink and at 10:30 they were still serving cooked bar snacks.
V. C.
Miscommunication with waitress and other staff, was billed for 5 sunday roast dishes when ordered 4, took staff over 5 mins to arrange split cash/card bill payment as in a group and the food was okay.
C. R.
Friendly staff made great recommendations. Inventive preparations and combinations of flavors and textures. Cool atmosphere. Exceeded expectations. Can’t wait to return.
H. T.
Delicious food, excellent service.
Went for the Sunday Roast. Everything was cooked well, sides were plentiful and great drinks to accompany.
A. C.
Very nice food and surroundings.
A. S.
Excellent burger and worth the price.
N. B.
We went when staying at the Montcalm hotel. It was a nice wee pub, no tv, no jukebox, mixed patronage. If you're staying at the hotel the walk will take 20 seconds
M. P.
Nice place with good food...however jugged hare dish was a disappointment. Try something else instead. Also a bit pricey, having a glass of wine for £10 each.
B. A.
Good beer great pub
j. k.
Very well cooked traditional English fare. Not the best choices for our vegetarian daughter but generally very good food and ambience.
P. R.
Food is always superb here. Good for a treat as it's more expensive than some places. It's got a buzz about it, but isn't too loud and busy.
F. G.
Expensive meal . Paid £46 for a ribeye which was not that great, seem to lack seasoning and Dorset crab was very bland. Potted Mackerel was very good. Service was very good
A. W.
As always great modern British food and service very good. Good atmosphere for a long business lunch.
Z.
Gastro pub in the heart of the city right near Barbican. Food specialises in nose to tail cooking. Sunday lunch is amazing.
h. l.
Lovely ambience and great food.
J. S.
British food at its best, very nice staff specially a young lady from Cordoba who gave us very useful indications about their menu
M. S. Z.
I never had a jugged hare before. It's really an experience 😎
A. B.
Not overly impressed with this pub, went in there before going into the Barbican to have something to eat, food wasn't the best, very small portions and way too expensive, staff were nice enough though.
S. A.
Very busy great atmosphere well cooked food plenty of it. Good service. A great place for Sunday Lunch in the City.
J. C.
Not just a good pub but an excellent restaurant. The kid goat was excellent. We had a great evening and meal.
J. H.
Nice space, albeit a bit overcrowded, but that's what you expect on an spring evening in a bar in Central London. Whiskey was nice, so we're the staff.
S. E.
Great menu, excellent selection of drinks, country-style pub atmosphere in the city.
D. P.
Lovely food but too big portions for me. I think some would be delighted but personally I would prefer half the size and a bit lower cost.
J. B. H.
Always good food served here. The staff are friendly and the bar has excellent choice of beers and spirits and wine.
R. M.
Super food, really nice atmosphere and lovely attentive service. Will be visiting again to try other things off the menu!
A. B.
Lovely City pub! Busy after work as expected, but good outdoor space! Staff were very polite too.
J. G.
What a marvelous restaurant! I got the namesake dish, jugged hare, and loved it. Fantastic ambiance, food, wines, and service. A must- visit.
S. O.
Really great place for lunch, good beer, good food. Had starter and main. 1 beer, £ 40. A bit pricey, but worth it.
S. M.
An incredibly cool building and such an awesome concept... but the staff were a bit unfriendly, and my partridge didn't have much flavour. Will try again next time, maybe we just got unlucky!
M. S.
Good meal
W. M.
Decent enough pub; traditional and good beer selection. Not eaten here, but the menu looks interesting
N. S.
Very nice surroundings and facilities, great bar, excellent beer. The food was good, but not special enough to justify the price.
j.
Great spot for a relaxing drink with friends and colleagues after work. Excellent bar. Some very good wines
R. S.
All a bit too much. Decent food but unnecesarilly huge portions and not of the things we wanted from the menu. Made a mess of the order to start with as well which didn't help.
E. C.
One of the better places for a beer in moorgate. Also serves food which is either good or entirely too gamey, depending on how adventurous you are when ordering.
Z. A.
Decent for pre drinks. Nice staff. Beer selection could be better. Quick service but not a lot of space.
J. S.
One of the best Sunday Roasts I've ever had, right next door to the Barbican Centre. Beautiful food, generous portions, great service - highly recommended!
M. S.
Friendly service, unhurried pleasant atmosphere* and excellent food. (* so long as you don't mind a celebration of game etc.)
P. N.
When you work at Barbican, you relax at The Jugged Hare. I did so for a few weeks in 2015 and gladly visited again in 2018. A must-stop for food, drink and friendship.
D. A.
Wide range of game options and other stalwarts of British country cuisine. Great presentation, atmosphere and service. Recommended.
C. F.
Nice clean pub, limited selection of beers apart from the usual big guns on tap, but nice apmosphere and a good place to meet people, dinning room was very busy and I hear good things about the food.
G.
Nice staff, good selection of craft beers. Loads of framed stuffed stuffed animals , not good for vegetarians.
S. N.
Excellent food, drink and service. Quite a high quality as shown by the prices but you do pay for what you get.
B. G.
Great gastro pub with hearty, gamey menu. Also nice wine list with Coravin making by the glass a treat.
A. F. n. K.
Delicious food, but had to wait for it more than 40 min, taking into account that restaurant was not packed.
M. B.
This was not the best roast beef that I've had in the Jugged Hare. It seemed like it was the end of lunch time, I would suggest not going after 1.30 for Sunday lunch.
A. M.
Amazing staff, service and exceptionally well executed food. It's not just a recommended place to visit it's somewhere to save a route back to from the nearest station to visit again.
D. P.
Really nice decor, amazing food, quite expensive but it seems the bar staff need to learn how to be nice, this seems to stem from the bar manager who was downright rude to every member of our party everytime they visited the bar.
J. F.
Went here with work crew and had a great time. Service was good but thought the food was pretty average. Maybe we ordered badly. Quite a loud place.
f. r.
Went to meet friends for pré drinks on new years eve. It was chilled nice venue à bit quirky. I only saw a bit of the venue though.
M. W. (.
Very nice food, attended a wedding meal here and the food was fantastic, lovely private room and staff wonderfull
B. W.
Cosy pub, big restaurant. Good alternative ale & beer selection, good service. Don't go if you dislike stuffed animals
i. c.
Quite possibly the best Sunday Roast in London. The meat and gravy very rich, and the individually served veggies wonderful.
H. P.
Fine for a quick pint. Food looked great, but best book in advance as hard to get a table.
M. B.
Nice place, good selection of beers, only critiscm is paying over a fiver for a small can of craft beer, that's over a tenner for just more than a pint!
A. M.
An interesting gastropub, which serves predominantly game dishes. Daily specials based on game availability. Nice wine list. Not to be missed.
E. W.
We stopped by for a pint and want to go back. The taxidermy is kind of freaky, but the chips were the best I've had.
N. B.
In season, the game is unbeatable. Always enjoyable, the noisy pub keeps it lively. Staff, sweet but not always on top of things...
S. S.
Fantastic Sunday lunch, we'll definitely be back.
J. G.
Quite a fancy place for dinner. Had a wonderful wild game bird meal. Not the sort of place one frequents, but for a change of pace this was excellent.
N. V.
It's an okay pub with great seating nevertheless and the jugged hare beer is good. Didn't like the staff much
S. M.
Lovely venue, definitely will have to come back to try the exquisite dishes..
D. S.
Very nice restaurant. Excellent menu. Very friendly staff. Food is exceptional. Close to The Barbican and Moorgate.
L. D.
Nice pub! Chairs can be quite uncomfortable if you're only going in for a drink. Staff are lovely!
J. L.
Classic delicious game dishes
R. S.
We had a great time here with our family. The food was really honest and good, service was quick and friendly.
C. P.
Nice place for drinks after work. Didn't experience the food/restaurant but it looked good and had nice decor.
T. R.
100% Recommend the actual jugged hare as a dish. The atmosphere here is wonderful and the staff are top notch. Definitely go here!
J. R.
Pretty good food, not overly flavorful. good service, good energy and crowd. Can’t hurt to give it a try.
A. N.
Just had drinks here but the food smelled lovely. Great decor of stuffed animals.
p. b.
Nice pub, good beer. Weren't there long enough to give a better view of it, but give it a go, it's quaint
M.
Bit overpriced pub for what it is. However the interior is lovely and the staff tries to make up for extortionate money you pay for good drinks.
S. P.
Really great food and Francesco, our server, was very pleasant and made our stay a great one.
A. S. (.
Nice atmosphere, good selection of drink, perfect modern english cuisine but a bit pricy.
D. M.
Decent pub, good choice of beers and cider. Bit loud, but fine for a couple of pints.
C. P.
Cool place, English spirit with good food and wine. Very nice staff too.
D. B.
Fantastic gastro pub in the heart of London, especially for those who like game meat. The only downside is that it's pretty expensive, but that's London for you.
A. B.
Good pub, a couple of interesting beers and the food looked nice although I didn't eat.
S. S.
Very nice pub with reasonably priced beer. The food on the other hand - well it is in London!
W. B.
Really liked the entourage. Friendly staff and open kitchen. Hard working people. Food was OK
