Reviews of The Pie Crust

Sue is the best host! Her family are the nicest people, quality food u cannot find anywhere, I know people who have driven from Kent to eat here. Love the homey vibe and u can turn up pretty much hw u want of course clean! The food is just incredible 😍
A. M.
Had takeaway here, noodles were nice but the beef stir fry taste was bit bland. Probably not going back. Kind of questionable why they get 4.6 stars cause I know better Thai takeaways in London
J. -.
Stumbled upon this family run charm that used to be a pie shop (was it too obvious?) I loved the ambience and was actually very busy for a Thursday night (no seats busy). Can't exactly remember the name of the dishes we got but the staff were very accommodating and we had 3 amazingly freshly tasty meals that we vegan -ized!
A. C. C.
Good quality Thai food at a low price and generous portions. Nice staff and quick service. The dessert "banana in coconut milk" was excellent.

Do not be put off by the exterior!
The best Thai food I have had in London.
If you wanting authentic Thai food, this is the place to visit.
Food was delicious, service was excellent and overall a superb experience.

I recently moved in the area and, as soon as I stepped in, I knew I was in the right place. This restaurant is an authentic piece of Bangkok in the middle of Stratford.
The flavours are so rich and the food tastes as it suppose to be (maybe a little less spicy than it). The owner is an amazing and kind Thai woman, that stayed true to her traditions. I really loved it and I have all the intention to become a regular.
They don’t do delivery, but they accept payment by card.
M. J.
What a lovely authentic Thai cuisine made by friendly and smiling Thai staff. I really would go back here. Pity we couldn't dine in but the takeaway was just divine all the same. The serving did not disappoint either. Next time, I'm getting stir fried beef with ginger..Much love to the place!

Very unassuming place to eat, you think it’s just a regular cafe by the outside, even when you step in you think am I really going to get Thai food here, well I can say that this place is the personification of judging a book by its cover, your are greeted by friendly staff, they have a simple menu but can make dishes to how you like it, the food tastes good the whole experience is welcoming & cosy, definitely a must if you are in the area.

What a find. Great tasting food, good sized portions and very friendly staff. Very good value for money

This is the best Thai I've had outside of Thailand! A real hidden gem.
Don't be put off by the exterior, as I was for a long time, as the food is delicious.
The pannag curry has so much flavour and everything on the menu is such good value.
D. M. V. N.
Excellent Thai food. Friendly service. Authentic local and Thai atmosphere. The Pad Thai was excellent.

Absolutely adore this Thai restaurant and have missed it very much during lockdown! The owner is incredibly friendly and gives such a personable service. Unbeatable prices, amazing food and great service keeps me coming back time and again.
W. A.
In two days I’ve eaten there as many times. Fantastic food, great service, and if the waitress wants to give me here instagram, it’d be much appreciated. 👍
R. P.
Family owned, genuine, tasty, good portions and quality. A local institution!
N. K.
Absolutely loved it!!
Was a little worried about msg, but the flavours were all natural and authentic.
The lady who took our order was really very sweet 😇
Also supports card payment now!!
A. C.
Really friendly staff. Pad Thai was really delicious but the Panang curry was a let down - very salty and a thick layer of oil on top, made us feel a bit sick really. Hence the three stars sadly.
K. M.
If you've tried and tested multiple Thai cuisines across London like I have (Busaba is not authentic, but I will say I like it and recommend it if you never had Thai food before as an entry level place before trying the real stuff!) then this is hands down one of the best authentic places still left standing!
A. J.
Total gem. Not for everybody, but a real hidden gem in my opinion. It's basically a greasy spoon cafe that has been run by the same Thai family since the 60s or 70s. The decor hasn't seemingly changed since then, and they clearly have their fans in the local community. The food is honest, decent Thai cooking (can't say whether the fry ups are any good, but I expect they are also banging). But the main thing here is the sense that you are experiencing something special when you go here. It's a slice of the community. A piece of East End history. There's no cash register, but they only take cash. Calculations are done on a twenty year old calculator. The proprietor is the type of wonderful grandma that you want to visit weekly. We're going back here for sure. Might try to go in the evening next time so we get to try a wider variety of Thai food! Love this place so much!

I’ve walked past a few times and dismissed this place as it doesn’t look much on the outside . However food and service was fabulous . Ok so there are no linen napkins trendy deco and the toilet is an adventure, but the bill reflects that. As all people who have travelled in Thailand will know, its these type of Thai cafes that serve the best food . I loved it and I eat a lot of Thai !

A great place to go for a quick lunch, cooked to order. While the menu may be a little short, the portions are generous and there is never a long delay before you are served. I'm just not sure how authentic my dish was last time, as I don't think the humble carrot is part of the rich heritage of Thai cuisine. Never mind, it was delicious.
k. w.
English greasy spoon by day, family run thai place by night. Don't be put off by the exterior. A really nice visit, the food is delicious and you can tell the staff out effort into making the experience special. I'd recommend the red or panang curry alongside the sharing starter for a hearty and wholesome tasting meal!
D. C.
Fish cakes tatse great and Panang is so delisciously rich
T. L.
Had a lovely evening at Thai Pie for my girlfriend's birthday. The restaurant has a beautiful interior and the staff is extremely pleasant and friendly. What's more the food is delicious and the portions are very generous! The byob policy is pretty neat too.
Will definitely be going back in the future.

I am such a fussy person so is very hard for me to feel completely satisfied with restaurants but this one is literally the best from the amazing customer service all the way to the food, no matter how I ask my food to be done it comes exactly as I've asked and not to mention the sweet lady that is there, probably the only restaurant I would give 100% on everything.. ooh I use to hate Chinese or Thai food before I met this beautiful place 😍 So THANK YOUUU! Cat 😊
Y. H.
Very good value and nice food! !! Highly recommend!!! 非常好!
S. T.
Lovely little restaurant, with tasty food and friendly staff - especially the lady who is front of house!
Popped in here last night with some friends as we'd heard good things. It looks pretty bad from the outside, but as the good saying goes, never judge a book by its cover. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. We had 4 starters, 4 mains and 2 rice dishes and it came to less than £20 each (inc £2.50 corkage per person, so was more like £16 each).
Is cash only, they do have some beers, but they allow you to BYO and just change the corkage per person.
Will definitely be back!

We found this place on a list of interesting restaurants in east London and we were not disappointed. Had we not known it was open we might have walked right by as the lights were so dim and only lit by candle in the front. When we came here it felt like we were newbies in a restaurant of regulars. We didn't, but you can bring your own wine if you'd like to. The thai food here is really good but the restaurant looks like it was built and never thought about again so it's good they keep it quite dim in here. I hear that it's a proper cafe in the day time but haven't seen it for myself, would probably only come here for dinner for the yummy thai.
R.
The best Thai in London! I look forward to making a visit to this restaurant every time I come to London. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, the food is impeccable and the prices are low for its location and the quality of service and food you receive. BYOB is also allowed, which is perfect! Would definitely recommend!
P. B.
An absolute hidden gem. Run by one delightful elderly lady, this once-cafe has been turned into the best kept secret for some of the best Thai food you can find in London. The Pad Thai is possibly the best I have ever had and all dishes are well priced at the London average. The portions are very generous- even one of the starters could fill you up so I recommend sharing. They will also happily listen to any dietary requirements eg no egg. It’s BYOB with a corkage fee of a couple of pounds per person (and a handy Tesco across the road). IT IS CASH ONLY but there is a cash machine right outside. The interior is small but absolutely charming with the old cafe menu still up. It’s frequently packed though so make sure you book ahead. Closed Mondays.
L. V.
The atmosphere was nice, with a lot of traditional Thai touches (music, paintings, photos, etc. ), and it was clearly family owned and run, which I love in a restaurant. The food was definitely worth the price, and was pretty decent Thai fare-- a little greasy, a small menu, but when you're craving Thai and it's close by it gets the job done!
L. G.
Authentic Thai Cuisine I have been coming here for 15 years and my meal is always amazing not to be missed don't be put off by decor. The staff are all lovely and to top it all for a small fee you can bring your own booze enjoy!
J. M.
Small place but amazing food. Bet Thai food I have ever had. The Plum sauce is really really good. The furniture doesn't sell it will inside but the food more than makes up for it. The staff are always very pleasant.
W. S.
This place is the most inconspicuous in the area and I live across the street and walked by it for months. Service is so-so but it is WELL worth the wait. On a busy night I had to wait a good 15 mins to put an order in then another night I ordered and ate and left within 20 mins. This is not the fanciest place by any means but it is hands down the best Thai food I've ever had. Food quality and taste is amazing. Family owned & run on a high street is rare these days. Support the cause, especially when the food is this good. It is also Bring-Your-Own so a bottle of wine can be brought in. Note it is cash-only but a friend and I shared a plate of the Pad Thai for £8! You can't beat that anywhere.
R. M.
From the outside you can't imagine the gastronomic experience you will have. Do you remember your grandmother making amazing handmade dishes prepared just for yourself? It's how it will look like! You will go back again and again expecting always the same - tasty Thai food at a good price.
J. W.
Amazing Thai food, bring your own booze for a small corkage fee, vegetarian options on the menu and vegan if you ask. Staff are a bit hit and miss but overall really great value and experienced, definitely recommend.
H. M.
Really lovely Thai restaurant. The ladies who served us were so friendly, smiley and kind. The food was excellent and tasted great. This is a hidden gem. Thank you for a great meal.
M. U.
Always great food and great friendly service 😊...enjoyed my Jasmin Tea.
I. B.
It doesn't look like much from the outside. The outside appearance is actually a bit dodgy. Once inside the atmosphere greatly improves. It is very intimate with only room for about 20 people. Last night, the atmosphere was very intimate with candle lighting. It was perfect for a date night.
J. M.
This place is amazing! I just love the homely cozy feel you get once you enter the restaurant. The hospitality is great, you don't have to wait long before you are greeted. The food is amazing and great price! It's a gem of a place. Love coming here.
M. S.
BEST THAI FOOD IN LONDON! our friend recommended this place and we went last night to try it out! We took 5 other friends and it was fantastic! food was full of flavor.. starters + mains. Food was fresh and a decent size. Service was great.. We will be back next week :).. Doesn't look much from the outside but inside its an amazing ambiance and vibe.. very cheap and worth every penny. Thank you Pie Crust!! :)
L. W.
I've been to this restaurant twice in a month's period and I really like the food. The service is friendly. I've read previous reviews about the décor, and I would echo other's advice, which is to ignore it and enjoy the food. The décor to me is a bonus as there is no pretentiousness and makes for a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere. I will be going here again, and again, and I would recommend.
A. H.
Absolute gem! BYOB is always great here and £2/person corkage. The good is super authentic, the mixed starter is unreal and always go for the red curry that’s delicious. 10/10
J. C.
Tastiest and most authentic Thai food I can find. Don't let the outside fool you, this is top quality food. Well priced too, at around £7.50 for a Pad Thai with plenty of king prawns.
N. S.
Really nice family run Thai restaurant. Food is excellent and the place is cosy. Don't let the shabby outside stop you entering. It's like being in Thailand.
U. D. B.
Wow! The decor is not modern, but I love it’s uniqueness, service is amazing, the food is the best Thai food I’ve Ever tasted in London. Clean and friendly, a hidden gem! Can’t wait to go back again!
U. K.
We went there for the first time last year and have been going back ever since! Its a hidden treasure. Food is fresh and great! Service is quick. Chicken Satay is lovely. Rice in the pineapple - boom, they killed it!
L. C.
This place is a little quirky. I used to live across the road from this place for years but never went in since I didn't really think that a greasy spoon by day was going to mean an amazing Thai restaurant by night. Similar to other reviews on here, friends suggested giving it a try and it kept cropping up as a place I really should try out. So one evening a couple of months ago, I went along to check it out. The place is cosy with candles on the table. We were lucky in so far as we got the last free table and people after is had to settle for takeaway if they didn't want to wait. The menu seemed interesting and authentic. The prices were cheap. The food was okay. I was expecting a little more flavour. I would not say that the food is better than Thailander (another Thai restaurant in Stratford) but I think the place has a nicer ambience to it.
It happened to be some diner in the cafes birthday which resulted in the lady owner coming out with a little HiFi with some awful rendition of happy birthday being played on a tape which she was encouraging everyone to sing along to. It was a little surreal to be honest but I think it put a smile on most peoples faces. Ultimately though, I think the food was OK. Maybe I'll try it again some time to see if maybe we caught them on a bad night.
D. C.
By day its a cafe, come the evening its a Thai restaurant. Very popular so can be quite busy, may explain why food may not be served at temperature I prefer as table staff not the most efficient. Prices are average, as appears portion sizes. Pleasant enough but would have to experience it a few more occassions to get a broader view of the menu.
S. D.
Don't be put off by the exterior, excellent food inside.
T. A.
A lovely little cafe/restaurant with character and personal charm. Ordered from the lunch menu, which wasn't fantastic but was freshly made. You have to look past the decor and dated attire and take it for what it is. Staff were genuine and friendly.
L. W.
Visited The Pie Crust on recommendation from the Travellodge over the road. Very pleased we did as the food was excellent. Small drinks menu but they allow 'bring your own' booze which makes for an even cheaper night out. A hidden gem which looks like a greasy spoon from the outside but nice and welcoming on the inside.
Didn't realise beforehand that it is cash only so had to go to the cashpoint next door to pay the bill.
P. B.
At first glance I wondered if I'd made a terrible mistake picking this place to eat, I'd read reviews as you're supposed to and the word was that this was the place to go. The restaurant is in an old greasy spoon type cafe, and nothing seems to have been changed. There are still the old menu boards on the walls, the lighting (such as it is) is very much based in the old style too. I found the lighting to be almost too dim for my poor old eyes to decipher the menu at all, but I managed with difficulty.
S. P.
Service bit strange & stroppy, got there around 9.30 first thing they said 'kitchen closes at 10.30 (pm)'. Ordered starters, but brought main course only as they claimed not hav heard, (think they were more interested in the closing time). Too much salt in garlic chicken but little garlic, noodles & vegi dishes were great & good size portions. Willing to give it another chance as first visit
M. S.
Best Thai food ever had! Homely food :)
H. S.
My fiancé and I love this place which is just across the road from us. They do takeaway as well as eating in. The pad Thai's are delicious, the best I've had in London. Service is quick, prices are cheap and the food is amazing. We got takeaway for Valetines day from here and although they were super duper busy there was no compromise on the quality and taste. Thanks Pie Crust, please don't change!
P. B.
Excellent food, promptly served. Don't be put off by the shabby exterior. Beer bottles available. But bring your own wine.
P. H.
The most amazing place. Our first bite years ago was incredible...everything is homemade. The Family that run the Piecrust are super nice and friendly. We love them and their food. The place is like stepping back in time to a true family business in the East End...there are few left like this one. They closed due to a family illness, so telephone to be sure that they are open.
T. C.
Its easy to miss it. Its interesting. Goird family/friends asian cuisine restaurant that seem to have been there for 3 decades.
J. M.
Small place but amazing food. Bet Thai food I have ever had. The Plum sauce is really really good. The furniture doesn't sell it will inside but the food more than makes up for it. The staff are always very pleasant.

Man sollte sich nicht von der Fassade und von dem etwas heruntergekommenen Interieur abschrecken lassen. Das Essen ist sehr gut und der Service auch.
