Reviews of The Princess of Shoreditch
C. R.
Excellent tasting menu. For me the desserts, pasta and snacks were the highlights. The main duck lacked a bit of punch but this didn’t detract from our leisurely lunch. Compact but interesting and sensibly priced wine list. Will definitely return to try more seasonal dishes.

Excellent Sunday roast, possibly top 5 in London. Starters were deliciously light and balanced, which is good preparation for the enormous portions of the main. Fantastic roast potatoes, and genuinely the best Yorkshire pudding I've ever tasted (probably because it was seasoned!) The meat (sirloin for me, pork belly for my partner) was beautifully cooked. The only, and very minor, detractor was the vegetable sides - just a tiny bit bland. Although, I note that any additional vegetables are complementary, a nice touch. Didn't get to try the desserts (only £7 extra for three courses) as the mains were so filling. Our service was attentive and warm. We will be back no doubt.

Wowwww what an amazing place… perfect for dinner with friends or a date or any kind of a special event. We had the tasting menu of five courses and it exceeded our expectations!!!! So delicious, so appealing.. the staff is great. Highly recommended for a special night for ppl who appreciate fine food.

Lovely cosy restaurant in Shoreditch. The Xmas menu has a good selection. The Manager and the waitress were both very friendly and helpful. Ruth the head chef came out to see if everything was ok which made the experience more special as we are great fans of her on The Great British Menu. The free gift was also a nice touch.

Honestly the best pub food I've ever had. We came back again today and had a Sunday roast and....wow! Everything was spectacular. We got the pork and beef and both were perfectly cooked and great quality meat. The roast potatoes were some of the best too, crispy, fresh and lots of flavour. Just amazing. Have to try the beef cheese toastie. The staff were all so lovely, we brought a dog and he was very spoiled! Can't rate it highly enough.
A. A.
Overall good experience but let down by poor management of bookings. Booked for 19:30 and they sat us down at 20:15 on a Thursday night. Another star deducted through forgetting drinks orders. The food was really tasty though and quite reasonably priced.
S. P.
The Sunday roast was fine, the taste and quality of the meat was excellent, plus the Yorkshire pudding was fab. However the cauliflower cheese was mostly burnt and really just cauliflower topped with grilled cheese. Service was patchy, atmosphere was jovial, puddings were fantastic (especially the pumpkin spice soufflé). So, a mixed bag.
T. K.
5 stars. Very tasty food - venison tartar and Beef Wellington were memorable, good service and relaxed pub-like vibe made it a pleasant night out. Recommend for a casual date or dinner with friends.

We came to this restaurant to try the fine dining option on the top floor of the building and had an amazing evening. We went for the 8 course tasting menu and loved every dish that came out. The plates were beautiful and everything was so full of flavour. The service was excellent with friendly waiters who really knew the food and explained it all perfectly. They made it seem like such a special occasion.
Also there was so much food! My partner and I were both really full at the end of the meal which often isn't the case with a tasting menu so we would recommend it to anyone with a big appetite.
The wine list was very reasonable with a wide selection of choices at the lower price end of the menu which felt like good value.
We will be back to try the other menu options and more casual food downstairs at the bar.
K. E.
Enjoyed the food and good service. Social distance was followed, plenty of gaps between tables.
M. S.
Tried the 8-course tasting menu and WOW! Every dish was presented beautifully and tasted amazing. Francesco took great care of us and recommended the perfect wines to pair. Will definitely be back!

Having seen Ruth on Great British Menu we were delighted to hear the news that she was to become head chef of the fine dining restaurant upstairs at the Princess of Shoreditch in east london. This would also be a great location for us to be able to visit as it’s on Paul Street and only a ten minute walk from Liverpool Street station. Unfortunately due to the current situation we were unable to get here any sooner than on saturday. But I’m delighted to say it was worth the wait.
Now to the day itself which started as I said arriving into London on the train and taking the leisurely walk along paul street until we came to the pub. We entered to receive a nice welcome from Josh before taking a seat at the bar to enjoy some pre lunch drinks and snacks. These included a Gin & Elderflower Fizz , the Queen’s Negroni , Pork Scratching’s with Apple Sauce & Home Smoked Nuts. It was nice chatting to Josh who is the general manager of the group that owns four pubs as he gave us a good insight to how the Princess of Shoreditch is different to the other three.
Now it was time to head up the spiral staircase to the dining room on the first floor. You could see straight how they’ve put in a lot of work to create a lovely dining area where all the tables are nicely spaced out. We took our seats before being greeted by restaurant manager Hayley who it was excellent and a delight to talk to throughout our lunch. There are only two menu choices to choose from which are the short five course or long eight course Tasting Menu with the option of an additional Cheese Course and yes we opted for the eight course. We then chose a bottle of the 2017 Mirabeau Rose from the Cotes de Provence that paired perfectly with a majority of the dishes.
Our first course was a couple of fabulous little Snacks. A Mackerel , yorkshire parkin & gooseberry along with a Chicken Liver , yoghurt , pistachio & raisin. This was followed by a selection of bread , crackers and two types of butter marmite & tomato.
Now we moved to the second course British Corn which was a Charcoal and hazelnut praline with pickled mushrooms & nectarine. An interesting combination that worked perfectly and definitely one of the highlights of the day. We followed this with a delightful refreshing Red Mullet Ceviche with isle of wight tomato , yorkshire fettle , olive & fennel.
Our next course was the Cheese and Onion a Berkswell & Truffle Agnolotti with spring onion , kohlrabi & bacon foam which a fabulous rich and creamy combination. This was followed by the main event the Salt Aged Duck with artichoke , chicory , cherry , potato and a heavenly duck leg terrine and probably my dish of the day.
We then opted to have the additional Cheese Course to share which featured a Lyburn Gold , Kentish Blue , Bath Soft along with a malt loaf , carrot & fennel chutney & dried grapes. Our palate was then refreshed with a Gin & Tonic with elderflower , cucumber & dill.
Now it was time to finish with a fabulous dessert English Strawberry with goat’s curd , sparkling wine & basil. We ended our lunch with Petit Fours of cashew & miso choux bun as well as hand tempered chocolate with passionfruit. These were brought to us along with a little surprise by Ruth herself which gave us the chance to have a quick chat and personally thank her a for a fantastic lunch.
This brought to an end a fantastic lunch and one that I would highly recommend. If you didn’t fancy having a tasting menu then I would certainly recommend looking at the bar menu downstairs which also looked very appetising and by the sound of it a Sunday roast seems to be a good idea as well. This is something we’ll probably try on our next visit which I’m sure won’t be that far away.
Thank You Ruth and all the team for a fantastic lunch and look forward to seeing you all again soon
A. A.
The food was great - not typical pub food at all!
Nice interior, good service. Highly recommended.
T. N.
We travelled up from Hampshire to have Sunday lunch.... the service was seamless, courteous, knowledgeable and professional.... the food was sublime ( beef cheek starter, roast beef main) perfectly cooked and more than enough to fill us both up... choice of beers/gin very good... the decor was tasteful and the 'pub' was not crammed allowing plenty of space.... we will be back....
L. A.
Great place, either for a drink or a full meal.
Visited for Sunday roast. Impeccable food and service.
Very recommend if you are in the area, definitely worthed the visit 💫💫💫💫💫

Wow wow wow! Fantastic lunch.... isle of white tomatoes were excellent and beautifully presented, the chicken was perfection and the custard desert omg delicious. Not forgetting the complimentary snacks!! Service was excellent. Thank you, can’t wait to come back
l.
Popped by for a quick drink after a seminar in the city, good selection of beers and friendly staff. It was a little rowdy at the time and had to yell a bit too be heard. The food menu is basic and it seemed the only mains was a burger and chips. The chips were some of the best I've ever had and the burger was certainly good too, albeit a little on the pricey side for this sort of establishment. Recommended if your around the area.

Great place in a quiet corner in the great selection of delicious Shoreditch beer and fish platter in a cozy atmosphere. Very friendly staff. We were twice, once for a beer and a bit of bite and the other ee for dinner.
A. W.
First Sunday Roast and an amazing one for that matter! Delicious and fresh produce and great service!
G. R.
Sunday Lunch with friends, we were seated upstairs, very good food and service, good selection of wines. Strongly recommend!!
Q.
The pub area with a limited menu is dog friendly. The food was great and the staff were amazing with my puppy!
C. B.
Sophisticated and amazing food. Great value. Good spot for a romantic date or a night out with friends.
R. S.
Booked this for the chrismas menu. It's a smallish restaurant above a pub in quieter part of Shoreditch. Came in and went up the circular staircase. The decor and atmosphere was very nice. There weren't any other diners when we got there, but the place filled up quickly. The service was attentive and freindly. The food was nice.
J. H.
High-quality and delicious food in a cosy setting !
v.
Surprise fine dining at this hidden shoreditch gem. Complimentary warm bread + marmite butter to start. Had the hake, which was deceptively filling, and the gnocchi side. Also highly recommend the low alcohol mikeller
D. M.
This place is great if you ONLY want to drink. If your night expectations involve food, please find a different place.
I will give an extra point for the actitude of the Chef whom tried to save the night offering more solid plates that are out of the menu
L. H.
Really pleasantly surprised by the asparagus and pea risotto. The tastiest I've ever tried I think. Really tasty butter with the sourdough bread too. Great wine list even if lacking options for good value wine by the glass.
Only reason not five is that it's a tad on the overpriced side. Couldn't quite bring myself to pay £7.50 for a desert.
T. G.
Came here for Sunday lunch recently. We had the half chicken. It was lovely, puddings were great too. Also recommend the Scotch Egg!
A. S.
Incredible food, attentive service, lovely atmosphere - a real treat!
D. B.
Sunday roast was delish! Service was great too. Stumbled across it by chance and wasn’t disappointed.
S. P.
Food was ok. Wine good, coffee good.
Is this the best gastropub I have ever been to?? Mmm not sure.
Without a doubt the service was outstanding; the staff were very friendly, helpful, and I like the system used to assist in customer seating. You get a text letting you know that your table is ready.
Should have been more meat on my plate. I had heard good things about this Pub and so had high expectations.
Toilets were not great. Can't speak for the disabled toilet as the number of people meant that I really couldn't see if there was a disabled toilet or not. But the size of this Pub and how the tables are situated tells me that this place is unlikely to be wheelchair friendly.
This Pub is crazy busy, and I think that the staff manage really really well.
This is an intimate little Pub. Set in a lovely little building, Really busy between 13:00 and 16:00, but then by 18:00 the madness begins to die down (but in a busy, but not crazy kind of way).
Take a look at the pictures taken; 2 mains, 2 Puddings, 2 Coffees, 4 glasses of wine £81.78. Actually that is not bad.
J. H.
The duck was excellent and in general I can only recommend this place for dinner. Very friendly and caring staff.
C. B.
Been here several times and really enjoyed it. Most recently had the Sunday roast. It was fantastic, one of the best I have had in a long time. Beef was perfect, it practicaly melted in the mouth.
Also good for a post work drink. They have a wide selection of gin and a range of beer on tap.
Bar area can be noisy but upstairs area is very pleasent.
D. F.
Nice pub with dining rooms. Menu looks good. We may be back to try!
N. H.
My favorite restaurant in Shoreditch! There is no better place for a British meal with fresh local engredients and creative spins on classic dishes. While the atmosphere is cosy and casual, the food is deliciously elevated. To understand how truly great the Princess is, I think you need go twice and try both the tasting menu and the Sunday roast.
J. A.
We had the delicious 8 course tasting menu dinner here, service was very good too.
G. H.
Great tasting roasts. Super pricey though. 20 quid per meal.
T.
Disappointing roast. The roast potatoes were very soft and the gravy lacked flavour. A good amount of food and by no means a bad roast, but certainly not one of the best in London. Service made up for it. Perhaps we went on a bad day but wouldn't go back for a roast
P. D.
Fantastic food and service will be back as soon as we can
G. D. R.
Nice pub in Shoreditch. They have a restaurant on the second floor. Good lunch/Dinner option if you are looking for something different from the standard pub food.
A. S.
My fav roast in the city, so delicious
It's more of a special roast to share with another person
L.
Delicious food, sumptuous cocktails, cute atmosphere and very accommodating staff. Would highly recommend trying the bottomless brunch here. They have a lovely selcetion of prosecco and some cocktails which ate bottomless for 2 hours once food has been ordered. The staff were very attentive and I definitely feel like it is value for money
N. M.
Liked it very much. Great location, downstairs normal pub, upstairs normal restaurant. Food and service were excellent
S. A.
Lovely place, food is impeccable, snacks are minuture, lovely staff. Hope to visit again
T. K.
It's a nice venue with good staff, but the food was overpriced and the wine quite average.
M. B.
It's great to see this nice pub open again. Gin and tonic served in cut glass adds that bit of sophistication to things.
D. A. d. O.
Amazing Sunday roast! Nice environment, good drinks and friendly staff. It is better to make a reservation or you might need to wait for some time in the bar.
R. M.
Francesco makes feel us like home, he look after us and he give as a very nice company. Ruth, tHe Chef, explain a few of her dish, she was very comfortable and you can see she is proud of what she does; Her plate are super thought, and well compose, the taste is explosive in your mouth, just a WOW, you can’t expecting it!!! You can’t describe, you need to try
J. P.
Ruth Hansom and her team are consumate professionals. Her food is a triumph and she is supported by Francesco and the team who are frankly just a marvel. Old school service from the next gen. Truly the jewel in the crown. If you haven't tasted Ruth's food and basked in the team's service you need to do it soon!
L. S.
I visited for Sunday lunch, the portions are large and absolutely delicious. Also loved the cocktails and desserts
S. C.
Quality sunday roast! You have to trust it when a Northerner said that. Always go for pork belly and bloody marry! Oh, really good scotch eggs too.
P. O.
Surprising good food, fast service. Good pub atmosphere.
A. B.
Went to the pub part. Nice popular place; decent food and drinks.
M. B.
Amazing Sunday roast, truly awesome and delicious! Really stellar servers as well, they were super friendly.
S. B.
A great place with amazing food and drink. Had an excellent lunch with superb service. Waitress very attentive and knowledgeable
M. G.
We went for a Sunday roast and the food and service was excellent but unfortunately as lovely as the food was, I really think the portions need to be revisited. The roasts are advertised as coming with roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy which suggests that each order comes with sides when in reality you're expected to share 1 portion, no matter how many are on your table. (The table of 4 next to us were expected to share 1 portion of veg, potatoes and gravy between them) As the portions are not as large as you'd expect for a roast, you end up paying so much more to order extra sides that you should have received in the first place. So the value for money isn't the greatest hence the lower score.
C. O.
Had a Sunday roast, with chicken, beef and pork. It was enjoyable. Had a mimosa for drinks.
E. D.
Overall a very good meal but slightly put off by the cost of the charcuterie board - two slices of bread, some garnish, 4 tiny slices of cured lamb, 4 slices of bresaola - £16.
Good drinks and cocktail selection.
T. M.
Very Nice fish and chips, fresh food and good service. Nice selection of beers and good location with a Nice causy atmosphere.
K. G.
A real hidden gem in Shorditch we had Sunday lunch the portions were huge and it was absolutely delicious, have a bloody Mary it was probably one of the best I have had
J. C.
Ahhh... What more can I say. If I can give a few extra stars, I would. We had the best 30th anniversary dinner last night . The food was delicious, the staff, attentive and to top the evening, Ruth H brought our special dessert...
J. L.
It was absolutely fantastic and I loved it and I hope you enjoy it too
P. T.
Deeeelicious Sunday roast and lovely friendly service. Gets busy so, either come early or make a reservation!
T. F.
Great food. Delicious. Not great staff. Grumpy.
M. G.
Superb food in a pleasant setting. Every one of the 8 courses was delicious. Marmite butter- definitely love it.
L. S.
Could be the best Sunday roast in central London. Great atmosphere and friendly service.
B. M.
Arrived early. Service was polite and friendly. Food on Sunday was very very good. The Yorkshire was crispy but had to be prepared beforehand. Meat was delicious. Perfectly pink. Good selection of wine and beer too. It is certainly in my top 3 London roasts. Staircase leads you to the main dining room upstairs. Bit tricky if infirm or disabled. Ask to sit downstairs in this case.
y. b.
Came for Sunday lunch last week and it was gorgeous. Literally only 1 negative about the meal, which was that the carrots tasted vinegary & smelled slightly off. Apart from this, the chicken was gorgeous and juicy, the gravy was flavoursome and the roast potatoes were so nice and crispy. Staff were lovely. Would come back here again & have recocmended to friends
Another slight negative is that the light in the ladies left-hand-side toilet cubicle was so dim I had to use my phone light to see properly!
L. B.
Great, well-sourced food in a buzzy but relaxed environment. Completely absent of any of the pretentiousness of its neighbours.
An enormous haddock and chips lunch was cooked to perfection. The varied and exciting menu does plenty to tempt me back. Service was friendly and attentive. Lunch servings are busy, so booking is recommended.
A. J.
Extremely pleasant boozer tucked away from the nearby mayhem of Shoreditch. Haven't tried the food but drinks all on point and atmosphere is always good.
D. E.
This place is a local legend, filled to the brim with local professionals every weekend night. They're had a minor makeover in the last 12 months to have more beers on tap and seemingly improve the speed they serve at the bar. Which is welcome, as it used to have one of the slowest bar services in the area.
I'm told the food here is fantastic. It all looks a bit smart for a quick weekday dinner, so I have yet to sample it...
D. E.
I went to The Princess of Shoteditch yesterday for dinner with my partner and was really impressed.
The menu wasn’t over fussy, and had a good selection of things to choose from that I actually wanted to eat. Everything came out well cooked and well balanced.
The deserts were particularly nice, and we were told all produced on the premises.
The service was also excellent, just the right balance of friendly and professional, without being overbearing.
The wine selection was good, and all in all we thought very good value for money.
It’s nice to see a venue on the city and Shoreditch borders that opens at weekends and had a nice buzz about it. So many are dead at weekends, or too rowdy.
Next time we’ll try the all day Sunday lunch, as I’ve often found it hard to get a good roast.
Well done.
A. A.
Staff here were very professional and helpful and friendly. Made several recommendations from the menu with drinks to accompany the meals. The venue too was a lovely building set just off the Old Street, the interior was very comfortable and enjoyed our time with friends. Would come again (once they complete their refurb).
V.
Great place for Sunday roast. A large variety of options and so tasty. I had the lamb roast and it was delicious. Others in the group ordered the roast beef, mixed roast and the seafood pie. Everyone equally satisfied. The bloody Mary tasted a bit odd though, but I'd just recommend a different drink. Would definitely come back here for the roast!
J. Y.
Friendly staff, great selection of beers and ales and just fantastic food. Our group tried just about every one of their 'small plates' between us and they were all beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Can't recommend this place enough.
C. D.
Lovely atmosphere, great service, never an empty water glass. The roast we had was delicious and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for. A really lovely, quirky gastro pub that's off the main road so it's tucked away.
S.
Amazing place for the Sunday Roast. Great service and atmosphere, not really crowded and noisy. I had a pork and it was soft and tasty. The garlic sauce would be a great fit, but nice anyway.
P.
Food was brilliant but our waitress was quite rude.
L. B.
Great place for a Sunday roast in Shoreditch. Lovely food and enormous Yorkshire puddings they serve. We (as foreigners) loved to have a second one and that was no problem at all. Making the reservation on the internet went smoothly and was necessary, as easy as if it were just around the corner at home.
C. J.
Excellent service for Sunday lunch today. The food itself was very good (4* rating), but it was so swamped and busy, that they could have easily treated me (on my own) as not worth wasting much time on. But they made a real effort - a really nice pint (Cwtch, from Newport's Tiny Rebel Brewery), a quickly served pork roast, and a comfortable seat with a free newspaper. I'd happily go back again.
C. S.
Went here for a Sunday roast. I think it is the best one I have ever had.
All the ingredients tasted amazing and the meat was perfect (my friend and I shared a mix roast and a lamb roast)
The staff were very friendly and professional.
All in all it was an exceptional experience and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants and Sunday roast in London.
K. C.
Went with 3 friends for a Sunday Roast, it was fantastic! (although everything was about 1£ more than advertised on the website) That said, i adored the pork roast, my friends loved the Angus beef and my other friend really enjoyed the veggy option. Great ambiance, god music, great decor - I would definitely go again.
Z. H.
Most friendly place I’ve been to in London. Can’t recommend this please enough
T. D.
I fancied a sunday roast dinner and Google took me here and I was not disappointed. one of the best roast dinners I've ever had in my life! big fat Yorkshire puddings all the trimmings very tasty food. nice atmosphere very friendly staff and I will definitely be going there again for a Sunday roast
R. S.
My experience here couldn't have been better. The beer selection was nice. The staff were first class. I arrived before they started serving dinner. I was hungry early. So, I enjoyed a nice drink and as soon as possible, they started my food. I got the 28-day-aged hanger steak with béarnaise & triple-cooked chips. It was prepared perfectly. The place is casual is a great way. Excellent food, service, location and a nice room. The prices were very good as well.
S. T.
A lovely evening. The food was absolutely cracking
R.
Really great food and good friendly service. Would highly recommend.
J. T.
Had a Sunday roast, very good quality meal although no condiments such as horse radish, mustard, mint sauce was offered. The service was not as good as the food unfortunately as the Staff seemed more interested in their phones.
T. C.
Visited the pub with a large group of girls on a friday afternoon. there was a few other groups - however we did manage to find a nice seating area. the drinks were delicious and was good value for money. The bar men can make a delicious G&T
B. S.
Excellent meal. The scallop ceviche, the Tunworth cheese custard and the lamb were absolute highlights. Not totally convinced about the Christmas pudding soufflé. But we had a wonderful experience and were looked after well by the lovely staff. Great "end of lockdown" experience for my wife's birthday.
M. M.
Best Sunday roast in Shoreditch with no doubt! Food quality really exceeds expectations and the service is friendly but professional throughout, despite the place being visibly busy. I loved the experience and definitely recommend!
E. T.
Beautiful pub with an amazing atmosphere. Perfect for Sunday's and really cosy. Sunday roasts are good and there is a great wine list. One of my favourites in Shoreditch and not pretentious at all which is nice in East London!
A. W.
Old reliable in the heart of Shoreditch. Shortish menu which always has a burger and fish & chips plus always a few other tasty options. Staff are very nice and there's a good selection of craft beers and wines. Good place for an informal sit down lunch.
D. M.
Decent gastro pub that has resisted becoming another bar. Have eaten here a few times both in the bar and upstairs and in the restaurant and the food has always been pretty good. The place gets busy and service can be slow at times which is a frustration but they usually have a decent range of beer on draft and the wine list is pretty good. The major criticism is the layout downstairs that prioritises diners and crams a lot of people up against the bar in the evenings. Having been on both sides of this it makes for a frustrating drinking and dining experience and slows down service for both punters and the waiting staff collecting orders from the bar.
E. L.
Very amazing place!! Had a great day.. A great place with amazing food and drink.
P. P.
The ambience of this place is something else. We came here with a friend to have a Sunday roast. The service is immaculate and everyone one has a smiley face. We both had the beef which unfortunately was just OK. Their selection of cask ales though is really good.
Worth to visit again for sure.
A. S.
We've been to the Princess for our work Christmas do for 4 years now. Each year has been slightly different, presumably dependent on the chef. Last year was a bit too 'fine dining', ie, small portions! This year was much better again - tasty food & good-sized portions. And the mulled wine was good.
C. D. F.
Food is delicious. Best Sunday roast iv tasted for a while. They were extremely busy so we couldn't stay as long as we wanted too as table bookings are back to back.
N. L.
Tends to get quite busy but their beer battered fish and chips was great.
P. G.
Went on a Sunday evening. We had booked but had to wait about 20 mins after our booking time before we were directed to a table. They had bottles of none of the about 20 red wines at the restaurant upstairs which is just bizarre. Food was decent.
L. I.
Wow. The Sunday roast is one of the best I've ever had in all the pubs I've ever had a Sunday roast. And the Old Fashioned... Was just insanely good! Highly recommend for a Sunday roast!
J. R. K.
Great pub with good food and a warm atmosphere. Staff are friendly and attentive, especially Sean who was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make sure we were well catered for and all had a nice time.
R. M.
Really good haddock & chips, comes highly recommended by a friend for Sunday lunch as well. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Swanky black sink area in the toilets if that kind of thing turns you on
f. g.
They have a good range of lager (pils, peroni, ...) and 3 ales changing quite often on the tap. They also have a good selection of bottled beer, most importantly the kernel brewery beers.
It's also a great place for lunch, I never was disappointed, bur you'll have to spend around £20 on a good meal
V. P.
Nice gastro pub in Shoreditch. It's a little away from The Triangle so the crowd is a little older and not as rowdy. We went for dinner upstairs and enjoyed our meal. Good service, quiet and relaxed ambience and above average food. A good local pub.
P.
Solid gastropub near the Old Street/Great Eastern road junction Good food. Well thought through and constructed but safely the right side of pretentious. Keenly priced - my tasty pork chop was very fair for £12 - and with charming attentive service.
D. J.
Went for the Sunday roast and the Pork neck didn't disappoint. My wife got the lamb which was a bit chewy so go for the pork. Nice atmosphere inside, worth a go.
A. G.
Delicious Sunday Roast and great selection of wine
M. S.
Excellent place in a quiet street for a Sunday Roast. You can book a table upstairs which is quieter. Nice craft beer selection too. Fast service.
A. Y.
We had dinner in the dining room upstairs. Lovely decor and atmosphere, great for a date. Food (pork chop and chicken) however was under seasoned, and for the price, was disappointing. The sister restaurant, Smokehouse, is much better value for money.
B. W.
Great food, delicious selection of beers
E. L. d. M.
Nice sunday roast -- great value for a nice leisure weekend meal. One of the best in the city! Tough to get in but worth booking in advance. Then go and enjoy the rest of the afternoon in a fun area - we team this up with a visit to brick lane.
W. G.
Wots not to like 😋❤️👌🍻🍹

Really good roast, but charging extra for gravy is absurd. Build it into your costs.
Salt and pepper shakers on the table would be handy as well.
Cheers.
P. S.
Top Sunday roast place and much more. No wonder it has a bib gourmand recommendation. The starters like pig's head and ham hock croquettes, fillet and heart tartare, scallop are are all delicious, but the mains take you to another level.
A. H.
This pub has a quiet sophistication and is stepped back from the hustle and bustle of old street enough for you to forget where you are and enjoy and relaxed meal. The roast dinners here are sublime (try the sirloin) and washed down with a bottle of Nyetimber sparkling wine you cannot go wrong.
M. E.
Sure any group of more than four people seems to require an inordinate amount of effort from the waiter; certainly we exceeded the capacity with a group of ten for a birthday lunch. After a great deal of discussion by our ordering committee the waiter came back for the order – two special lamb roasts (for four) and two roast chickens (for two). It doesn’t take a mathematician to realize we’d over ordered. Waiting hungrily we received the bad news: they were out of lamb… in a Sunday Roast Pub… at lunch time, on a Sunday. They gave us a menu (one between ten) to reconsider.
Later, the pork shoulder arrived, drowned in a gravy that resembled Bovril so I can’t really tell you how the pork tasted. The roast chicken was good, but nothing special other than it’s size.
B. H.
I’m jealous Londoners have this place as an option to start off every Sunday. The Sunday roast was very tasty and the staff was warm and inviting to this New Yorker. Can’t wait to go back when I’m in London again.
N.
Not bad, not outstanding. First time I went the roast beef was good, second time... tough as an in-sole. Yorkshire puddings the size of your head.
J. L.
The food was good, but I wouldn’t say great! There were two options for starter and main as a vegetarian. I had the halloumi, pumpkin and pomegranate tart, which didn’t come as I expected it to - it came with all the ingredients piled on top of some very flaky pastry, and cubes of halloumi so small I very nearly failed to identify it as halloumi 😂 it was tasty, but not substantial enough. The vegetable wellington, on the other hand, was the one - absolutely delicious! (And I had sticky toffee for dessert, also yum!)
N. M.
Amazing food, a tad pricey for what it is, but great food
G. C.
Seriously good food. Not normal pub food this it's small plates and they are excellent. Good beers too they have Orval don't see it around much.
S. B.
Good Sunday dinners. Had another evening meal there and it was very good. They do good British food done well. Good wine selection.
O. S. (.
A great little after-work pub.
The food tends to be 'gastro' and updated regularly, but can be a touch on the expensive side. Not too expensive that is, just on enough on the upper side that it'll push you to consider your choices.
The dining area is upstairs, and is accessed through a different door to the main pub which can be found on the corner of the bar.
M. M.
Been here 3 or 4 times now, oddly always on a Sunday for the roast. Always good, always well cooked. Damn fine tatties. Friendly staff, good vibe, really enjoyable.
T. V.
Had the Sunday roast. Very good portions could have been hotter but we were a table of eight. Very good service. Would recommend.
A. G.
The food was beautiful, we've had it downstairs, which was very busy on a Friday night. The service and friendliness of the staff were impeccable! I'd come here anytime again.
A. O.
Beautifully done Sunday Roast with generous servings of trimmings. Staff are really friendly too. Reservations are highly recommended as they book out very early in the week.
P. J.
One of my fav pubs in Shoreditch. It's classic English pub meets Shoreditch hipster vibes. There is an upstairs part of the bar which serves great food. But I love coming here for the beers and lively crowd. Good spot for a pre-drink before having a big night out in Shoreditch.
C. S.
Lovely decor and place, although our booking was messed up but luckily they managed to sort us a table. Food was very tasty but wasnt the warmest, Apart from that it was a great meal!
B. T.
Great atmosphere, service, and delicious food. I ate the Elwy Valley lamb Saddle, Boulangère potato & purple sprouting broccoli, which was faultless, except for the tiny serving (entrée size) for £21.00!
H. B.
I have done Breakfast, Sunday lunch and now finally Steak at Hawksmoor. It was one of the last 'famous' steak restaurants to tick off my list and was going up against some of my favourites such as Goodman, Gaucho and Mash...
K. L.
We had a lovely and delicious dinner here. The food and the ambiance were absolutely amazing. The service was great, too!
T. C.
Pub food done really well!
Awesome fish and chips (especially the triple cooked chips) and one of the finest sticky toffee puddings i've ever had!
B. K.
Amazing food, beer and service. Fish and chips was delicious, fish perfectly cooked and the batter crisp but light. Very friendly service - nothing was too much trouble
K. G.
Lovely gastro pub (restaurant upstairs and pub dining below) serving good (often excellent) locally sourced food. Interesting wines and craft beers. Cool. Can get very crowded in the evenings.
P. H.
Really nice, authentic food. We would recommend this to anyone who wants to experience a real Londen pub with good quality straight forward dishes
T. P.
Delicious Sunday dinner of roasted chicken, beef and lamb. The vegetables, especially the potatoes, were perfect. Try the Scotch egg and chicken for two.
M. R.
Great stuff - the food and service is the quality of a 'proper' restaurant. Ambience and décor makes it still feel more like a pub downstairs, which is not a bad thing.
J. J.
Came here for my birthday courtesy of my son and daughter-in-law. Food was first class and the staff were lovely. Will deffo recommend.
S. K.
The food and service was faultless. We came in for a roast dinner at 3 p.m. and the meat was juicy, the vegetables crunchy and the potatoes perfect. This is very rare to find anywhere at this time in the afternoon.
S. K.
Beautiful pub with excellent service and delicious food. Also the best bloody mary I’ve had in long time!
L. C.
Great food, beer is a bit pricey. Flat iron was absolutely delicious, juicy and full of flavour. Decent selection of beers.
J. M.
Good burger and good value. Was part of a group of 10 and we were very happy. Empty plates all round.
F. Y.
Great roast on a Sunday, great service.
R.
Shoreditch's original gastropub is still amongst the greats. Food is reliably good as is the service. Only let down by a relatively limited selection of beers by today's standards and regular overcrowding.
J. J. A.
First time in this bar really enjoyed it service was good even though it was very busy. They had a non alcoholic beer that I enjoyed.
R. A.
A fantastic place for dinner, or a good roast Sunday although I would book in advance as it gets busy!
It's also a great place to grab a drink in the evening; with a good selection of ales and wine
C. K.
Sunday roast upstairs: Roast and drinks were lovely and staff were attentive. Vegan nut roast was really good too!
D. T.
Known locally as the ‘posh pub’ this is a well fancy and well lovely boozer. The food is next level and everyone who works there seems super chill.
N. K.
Came for a Sunday roast and was not disappointed-fantastic food! Really couldn’t fault it and perhaps worth paying a few pounds extra to go here!
L. H.
I can't remember being here but Google said I was. It must have been good 🤣🎉
A. N.
Nice food, but a bit limited in variety. No burger on the menu, which was a fault for me. Great list of wines.
T. B.
This is without a doubt consistently the best Sunday roast I've had in London.
I'd recommend booking in advance if you are planning on heading down as they tend to be, understandably, busy!
S. D.
Bartenders were extremely friendly. The fish and chips were amazing. Next time I go to London I will absolutely be going back.
J. O.
Great sunday roast. Got there about 5pm and waited 15min for a table for 4ppl, but by 6.30pm most tables had cleared out. Friendly service
A. D.
Lovely pub off the beaten trail. Fantastic selection of beers, OK choice of cider. Quite an intimate venue with a relaxed ambience.
a. m.
Great roast. Great service. Faultless
J. S.
It’s also a great place to have a drink and dinner if travelling or dining solo. It perfectly fits the bill between a pub and a restaurant and the food is great!
G. F.
Great pub... often very busy and difficult to get a table. There's an amazing pizza place very close which was the perfect end to a fun night
V. W.
Great food, great service.
Been here in winter, visited in summer and am more than happy to dine here again next time I visit London.
J. J.
Sunday roast is amazing, it's a definete must try. We had lamb and beef. The portions are massive.
N. W.
Recently went for a Sunday roast. Service was ultra friendly and helpful and roast was very decent. Not mind blowing but worthy of a visit
K. M.
Great food, amazing service and a chilled out atmosphere. What's not to love! My favourite pub in Shoreditch by far
J. T.
Sunday roast was nice. The prices for wine are especially on the high side. The service was very nice and attentive.
R.
Nice atmosphere, food was good but not quite grate, but we were the last table of the day. Will try again.
G. R.
Made a booking for Sunday roast based on other reviews. Food and service were excellent and I would return again and again.
d. h.
Great food, but small portions. Beer exceptional and atmosphere amazing.
D. N.
Nice place for lunch, nice friendly atmosphere. The staff are nice and attentive, and the food was tasty and well presented. I'd like to see what The Princess is like in the evening.
A. A.
Good service and delicious Sunday roast
D. S.
AMAZING! Group of 12 for Christmas dinner and we had a great time! Service, food and atmosphere were all exceptional!
A. U.
Good service and food. Wide wine and bottled beer selection. Few beers on tap as well.
U. F.
all good, were happy with service and food. obviously there are cheaper places in London but all money worth spend, in such proximity to City it's very well value/price and service all attentive
C. E.
Food was good. Slow service. The vegetarian main option was Hobsons choice. Interesting selection of beers.
C. H.
Friendly staff, tasty food and good niche ales. They even managed to rustle up some vegan food at short notice!
M. K.
Exceptionally good customer service. Friendly and receptive staff who go beyond their call of duty to ensure the customer is satisfied. Whatever you're paying them isn't enough.
D. B.
Excellent food and impeccable service
R. M.
A nice pub hidden just away from the hustle and bustle, it's clean and cheerful with a decent range of beers . The food looked enticing though it wasn't the cheapest I've seen
W.
We went as a table of four and ordered different roasts. I found my lamb roast okay but lacking something.
P. L.
A strange cross between an old man pub and a gastropub. Good food, but hard to just go there for drinks, as there isn't really any standing space.
S. M.
Food in the restaurant and bar are of amazing quality and value. Lovely staff with cheerful service. Bit dark inside.
N. N.
Cute lil pub, seating is a bit tight but excellent food worth being squashed for tbh
M. R.
Nice pub where you go for the food not for the drink. Upstairs is a dining room, but the pub menu is already really good and British.
K. E.
Very nice local pub with the option to eat pub food downstairs or restaurant food upstairs. Great beer and very friendly staff.
M. G. C.
Not really impressed with the food to be fair. I guess it's just nicely decorated and that's about it. Ps: Small portions.
I. D.
Classic for a Sunday roast with an awesome roast every time. Service though is a tad slow.
L. R.
Lovely ambiance and tremendous food for what is definitely the best pub in shoreditch/hoxton area.
L. R.
Wicked atmosphere I really enjoy the food an drinks here the music was fantastic loved the vibes
D. M.
Good little pub with a nice collection of beers. When the weather is nice people spill out all over the surrounding pavement for a few drinks after work.
M. J.
Super cool pub. Love the style, food and drinks. One of the best in the area
w. t.
Best pub in London. Good beers/booze/food/music and great setting. How a pub should be
L. L.

D. M.
Fantastic food and service. A new favourite
J. G.
The food is generally excellent. Good craft beers and wine selection
P. M.
fair selection of beer. Much less crowded compared to other pubs in the area, which is actually a strong plus
P. N.
Great selection of beers. Food is also excellent as well as providing heaters for outdoor drinking.
K. L.
We had Christmas dinner and it was great. Will come back to try the regular menu.
i. c.
Great local pub with fruebdly service and a laid back vibe. Top venue for a Sunday Roast.
S. L.
So so...food pretty decent but not as good as sister pubs...The Pig and Butcher or The Smokehouse
M. M.
A shoreditch classic, a proper 'pub' with some good ales on tap.
and then amazing good too.
whats not to love about this place
P. D.
Bizarre service initially from waiter. Eventually had South African manager/waiter and service improved significantly.
D. S.
Food is always excellent, well cooked and very tasty. Fair prices for a gastropub.
Y. S.
The charcuterie was very good just a bit on the small side, the staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was good.
P. S.
Always have a fun night at the POS. Food is really good and nice pub downstairs for a beer beforehand.
N. F.
Excellent friendly service, superb ambience and delicious food combine to make a good night out. Highly recommend!

@frankiefor_president
L. A.
Decent pub, can get really crowded in the evenings. Nice selection of beers.
M. K.

N. I.
Limited menu and not the best of service. Beers are well overpriced than the norm for London!
T. W.
A hidden gem for dinner..... Superb. Great staff too
B. B.
Nice pub, good food and beers; hard to get a seat in the evening.
J. P.
It gets busy on Sundays so booking is essential. The roast is really nice.

The food was underwhelming, I will give it another chance however.

Nice pub in Shoreditch just a short walk from Old Street station. We been in a Sunday and can say that the beef roast was absolutely superb. The drinks are a bit pricey, even for a trendy zone like Shoreditch. Service is just fine, what you can expect in a pub.
