Food, from a very wide & rich traditional menu, was exquisite with very generous portions; atmosphere and ambiance are very welcoming with everyone at Hunan, from Managers to waiters, making your experience unique and unforgettable. In my opinion, the BEST Chinese restaurant in Manchester based on flavour, seasoning and taste. I have recommendations for some of my personal favourite dishes at the bottom of this review, and I have dined at this restaurant many times over the years. Many of the dishes are cooked and prepared in the very authentic Hunan cuisine style, which is one of the best and most fragrant spicy cuisine styles in and from China. Service, cleanliness and setting of the restaurant are all good too, but the food itself is especially fantastic and really sets itself apart from any other Chinese restaurant in Manchester! This is coming from a Chinese person who has grown up going to many different Chinese restaurants and eaten Chinese food all his life. If you like authentic, aromatic, traditional spicy Chinese flavour and cooking (which is on another level to the standard spicy cuisine you find at most other Chinese restaurants), then this is a restaurant you need to try. Their best dishes are spicy (sometimes very spicy for some people), but are bursting full of aroma, flavour and taste rather than just simply having a lot of heat and spice and are prepared by authentic Hunan chefs who have a high level of rare expertise in this style of cuisine. If you just want the standard and tame sweet and savoury flavours preferred by most westerners and Cantonese, just go to one of the countless Cantonese restaurants you can find in Chinatown or get a standard Chinese takeaway, this restaurant isn't for you. If you want the spicy, aromatic and bold flavours of traditional Hunan cuisine as described above, then this is the best and one of the only restaurants locally you can find this at. A lot of their dishes can have the meat substituted between pork/beef/lamb as well. Amongst many others, some of my favourite dishes which I also recommend are 6.8 Countryside Style Green Chilli Stir-Fried Pork, 6.10 Fried Preserved String Beans with Pork Mince, 7.1 Tender Lamb Belly (Clay-Pot dish), 13.9 Stir-Fried Beef/Lamb in Cumin, 13.11 Boiled Beef/Lamb Slices in a Fiery Sauce, 13.14 Dry Fried Diced Spring Chicken with Chilli. Good prices for the quality, portion size, uniqueness and excellent flavour of the dishes. This is a restaurant you would want to come back to regularly and try out new and different dishes. This is my personal favourite Chinese restaurant and I will continue to be a regular, which I have been for many years. 5/5 wholly recommend!

This place is authentic Chinese food. You can't get chop suey, nor chow mein, nor Fu Yung, nor any dishes designed for westerns. What you get are stunning flavours of mainland China. For those a bit nervous, try Chairman Mao's Red Braised Pork, fried tofu, mince with beans. My favourite dish is the pig's feet served as a main. It's unrecognisable as feet, but simply heavenly.

Recently visited for an excellent lunch. The chairman mao's braised pork was really good, but the countryside style green chilli pork was the star of the show - one of the best Chinese dishes I've had in a very, very long time. The staff were efficient and attentive, and the prices were reasonable. A delicious lunch for two including soft drinks came to £30. We'll definitely be back!

I visited the restaurant on recommendation of a friend. And I can tell you I was amazed by the food, atmosphere and the service. First & foremost, the restaurant layout is amazing, and you can really feel the open space. You get an excellent feeling of privacy and your own space. The service was great, staff were very professional and courteous. They checked on our food, and experience but without hovering over all the time. So the main highlight for me was food, as this was my first time I asked the staff for recommendation and I was pleasantly surprised. We order a mix of seafood, meat and vegetables for dinner. The food was very delicious, hot and sizzling. They serve Halal chicken so this was a bonus!! The place has jumped to the top of my list in China town, and I will definitely visit again and would happily recommend to others.

Fabulous restaurant. Called in without a reservation late Saturday afternoon and we we able to get in. Everything we ordered was delicious, the salt and pepper ribs were amazing. All mains were fantastic and there was loads. Prices were very reasonable and as you'd expect. Service was fast and courteous. We never felt rushed even though we could see a number of people waiting for tables by the time we finished our meal. As soon as we stood up to leave, the table was cleared and reset before we had finished zipping up our coats! Great place.

A decent Chinese restaurant for British tastes. Hunan food is typically spicy but this place has toned it down a fair bit (thankfully?). The space is good for a group and staff were helpful. A few areas of note, a few dishes have MSG (not highlighted in a way I noticed) from the get go (in the marinade so no way to remove it). Also take away boxes are charged for. The food was ok, sizzling beef, aubergines and tofu with cauliflower dishes all went down well. Ultimately an average experience.

Most Chinese restaurants in Manchester Chinatown are pretty mediocre and no where near the standard you could get from London Chinatown but not this one. This restaurant make authentic Hunan cuisine (which is very hot, like Sichuan) and is probably the best I have tried in the UK. Price is also reasonable for the food quality.

Just finished my meal here and can highly recommend it. The mixed hot pot is effectively a soup pot on your table that you add ingredients to yourself. The pile of ingredients is both massive and quality and can be refilled with whatever you run out of. A 15 minute wait at the door has never been more worth it.

Kwok Man was my go to place. Then it closed. Have tried many since then, then heard about this place. As an American I learned a valuable lesson years ago when in Korea. Not all Asian food is the same from country to country. While visiting Manchester I knew that I wanted Chinese food, and I wanted to test my theory that it would be different in England than it is in the United States. If different means better, than the Chinese food in the UK is decidedly better than that of the US. We are not talking about specialty restaurants with a fancy name and a niche, just a run of the mill Chinese restaurant. The menu was thick, like magazine thick. I found this a bit irritating at first but soon realized that the menu contained a variety of dishes across the meat spectrum, and had a large vegan selection which is something I haven't seen before often in Chinese cuisine. Hunan defied my expectations of standard food. I ordered what I believed would be the most difficult thing to cook from their extensive menu, the Hunan Lobster and a side of dumplings. This spicy dual crustacean dish arrived looking so delicious that looking at it helped satisfy my appetite. The spice was perfect, the meat was cooked perfect, the dumplings made for a great alternative taste in between a few cracked shells and bites. If Hunan organizes the interior just a bit, and places some slightly more mature music then it could actually make a bigger impact in the local restaurant scene. I suspect however that they are content with the current clientele and dont have a need for improvement as yet. If you arent put off by the feeling of an alleyway out front, with massage parlours packed between the vietnamese, thai and competing chinese establishments, which I would suggest you should disregard them, then you will enjoy the food here immensely. If ever in the Manc again, I would eat here again in a heartbeat. Now to convince some place back home to step up its game.

So far, the best hunan cuisine in North West. I am original from Hunan in China, I am live in Manchester at the moment. The dishes in the Hunan Restuarant is the closest taste to my home town you can find in the UK. Lucky my boyfriend and me can enjoy the hunan dishes every weekend.
