Reviews of Cook House
V.
Finally made it to Cookhouse! Food did not disappoint - amazing selection of drinks too. I believe they brew and ferment a lot of these themselves which is super cool...
Highly recommend the tempura Cauliflower with the curry sauce and the pickles were awesome!! Didn't realise we got bread and butter so we ended up being so full and didn't have room for dessert which all looked delicious and fresh.
Location is great with outdoor seating on the terrace/outside when the weather is nice. Close to the quayside which is perfect for an after dinner stroll along the river.
M. T.
Fantastic experience! Had a bunch of starters and deserts as the lunch menu is less generous than the dinner one. However, neither disappointed, each plate was very delicious and flavourful! The tempura cauliflower in particular was out of this world and the Kamboucha pear were my favorites but all dishes were brilliant!
Staff is very friendly and nice, location is secluded by the park. Couldn’t recommend this place enough! Book well in advance though, it’s hard to get a spot. No wonder why :)
P.S. They also have a nice deli by the entrance to shop some of their goodies!
L. R.
Been on our list for a while to try and did not disappoint. Loved the simplistic Scandinavian-inspired interior and relaxed vibe. The food was so beautifully presented with such depth of flavour. The trout with clam butter was divine and the mushrooms unbelievably good. Winner!
R. S.
The food here just seems to achieve even higher standards with every visit, not only in terms of the inventiveness of Anna the chef but also the flavours and the whole experience. Friendly, knowledgeable staff enhance the place as only people who care about what they do can.
M. L.
Just popped in for a little bite to eat and a drink and had a lovely time. Lots of nice pickled and smoked things, house made vermouth and a decent orange wine. Staff were all really friendly and the place itself is settled in a great spot. I would imagine it’s super fun when the weather is nice and sunny

Lovely relaxed setting and atmosphere. We sat in the early September sun, were waited on by friendly staff, and the food was deceptively simple and utterly delicious. Felt like a home cooked meal by someone who loves food. I love a restaurant where you feel the passion for the food.
Plenty of choice for omnivores and vegetarians/vegans. A great meal with friends.
I. W.
We really enjoyed a meal at the Cook House. The food was excellent, with a good range on the menu including drinks. For 4 of us we decided to share 4 starter dishes, 2 mains and 2 deserts. I recommend this way so you can get a taste of many of the excellent dishes 👌 I recommend the tempura cauliflower, celeriac katsu curry and ox cheek 👍
J. B.
Fabulous food at a reasonable price. Good service. Nice location if you want to potter down to the river Tyne before or after. They offer 'small plates at lunchtimes - so maybe two per person, depending on how hungry you are. Had some of the best ham I've ever tasted. Really good, many local, ingredients form the basis for a great dining out experience.
S. F.
This modern restaurant has a laid-back vibe and serves some well thought through, beautifully presented and flavour-packed dishes. The beer menu offers variety and character.
G. F.
Lunch here was lovely, what a treat! Things to get again:
- salt beef on focaccia 😍
- cauliflower tempura 😋
- kimchi pancakes 👍
- fennel and feta salad 👌
The smoked trout was a bit too creamy and not enough horseradish.
C. B.
I adore this place. I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting to Anna & I can see in her eyes her absolute passion for food.
What pleases me about cook house is it’s link to its name, the food here is a celebration of food love and food travel.
There is no one style of dish, rather an array of incredible flavours using quality ingredients.
I honestly can not recommend this place enough, a great story, an inspirational owner and above all truly outstanding food.
d.
Truly excellent restaurant. Great setting and decor. Really good cocktails and mix of dishes. The staff were very friendly and attentive. My only issue is the lower ground floor. There are 2 large central tables with couples tables around. On my visit the large tables were literally shouting and screaming at each other. The acoustics need attention there as the noise was oppressive. I couldn't even think about eating. Other couples looked uncomfortable too. We were moved fortunately, but I would have left otherwise. I'd suggest an alternative space for larger groups or acoustic materials to reduce the noise issue. I would return but stipulate to sit upstairs.
M. D.
What a splendid dinner and some amazing memories made that night.
J. B.
We had a wonderful evening... Friendly relaxed efficient service and delicious food. They have obviously taken great care to create a unique menu. We tried as many dishes as it was polite to, and the flavours were amazing. Our only sadness was that we didn't have room for dessert and coffee. We will have to come all the way back from Hampshire!
A. H.
What a find! Incredible small plates perfect for sharing. Very talented team that know how to create flavour. Everything made in house, even soft drinks which are delicious. Really friendly staff. Well done, can't wait to come back!
A. b.
An absolutely fantastic meal. The cauliflower tempura was out of this world. I had the crab and fennel gratin for main beautifully complimented by samphire. My husband had the pork chop which he thoroughly enjoyed. As it was his birthday it was made very special. A really lovely evening with service that was attentive yet not overpowering. A treat to be repeated.
F. A.
Creative food that is no nonsense and absolutely brilliant. I have been to a lot of great places to eat in Newcastle but Cook House is a gem if you really are a foodie. Nothing pretentious here! Service was excellent and staff were so friendly. Thank you guys!
J. D.
Had a lovely family evening here. Service was good, staff were friendly and food very good although probably a bit pricey. Fish/seafood stew was very nice.
T. W.
We went for early dinner, a welcoming space upstairs looking into the kitchen. The staff were welcoming, the cocktails amazing and the food delicious from such a varied menu. A fantastic evening out, highly recommend.
R. M.
Lovely restaurant in Ouseburn, Newcastle. We shared five small plates rather than two mains, and it worked very well. Waiting staff were flexible and helpful. Drinks menu excellent - see photo of one page of the seven-page menu. After our time slot had expired, we were politely asked if we would like to have a drink outside on the terrace, which was beautifully designed and decorated.
G. H.
A difficult review to write, the premises are beautiful. Our greeting downstairs weren't particularly warm, which was a shame as that starts your experience on an unwelcome note. However the waitress upstairs was superb, friendly and efficient. The menu sounded wonderful and some meals were superb. The mushroom with sate, cauliflower fritters and bread delicious. The other three small plates lacked oomph. The meringue dessert was outstanding and lemon possett good, but orange polenta cake, dry and overcooked. Four stars for all the positives. Wines excellent.
S.
Myself and my partner were unsure whether to eat here but we’re so glad we did. We sat outside experiencing a lovely view of ouseburn as we ate. Both delicious food and drinks. We’ll definitely come back again!
C. L.
Came here for an evening meal and sat on the outside terrace upstairs. The food was fantastic and well priced, the staff were friendly, funny and helpful. Really enjoyed seeing the chef BBQing outside whilst we ate. Lots of drinks and spirits are made in house, I'd highly recommend and will be going back
H. W.
Really good locally sourced food in a great venue in one of Newcastle's nicest areas. The staff are really friendly and there's a great atmosphere. Perfect to sit out and enjoy the homemade drinks under the sun.
K. M.
So glad we went here while in Newcastle. Everything was perfect - food, setting and drinks
A. B.
Amazing ❤️ and reasonably priced brunch .. love the chill scandi vibe and the pears on toast was an actual dream ..
A. S.
One of those new type eateries.
Different menu. In a lovely way.
It's what l like to find.
You order something and it comes to you unexpectedly different.
Porter was good, even though it came in a can.
Will be back.
C. H.
Lovely atmosphere, un-rushed, relaxed and friendly service. Food superb and freshly prepared. Great shop also for the things you’ve just eaten!
A. F.
Barbaque on the deck setting, pretty good/fast service
Great quality menu and good wine/beer selection.
Tempura broccoli and grilled bavette really recommended!
V. E.
Didn't know it was Michelin listed when we booked. Great lunch at reasonable price. Beer very expensive for a small can. Lovely on the balcony.
A. S.
I LOVED this restaurant, the cool venue, excellent wine, phenomenal food, great staff, highly recommend
R. C.
Food was a bit pretentious and over priced, but the drinks were lovely.
Also portion size was random, some dishes were big enough for a main and others barely the size of a starter.
R. H.
10/10 food, staff, atmosphere. We had a great time and can’t wait to go back!
M. A.
Great food, good service, nice surroundings and really good gluten free options, thoroughly recommend if your in Ouseburn!
A. L.
-1 for the location but I really like everything else. The food were beautifully plated. Although it was on the pricey side, I would still recommend for any special occasion
M. G.
Wide range of options for all tastes, everything I had was very flavouful. Beautiful place with fantastic outdoor seating area and flawless service.
Only reason this isn't 5 stars, I paid £50 for one person and 1 hour later I'm eating again once I got home
A. T.
A great little gem of a place. I tried the orange and almond cake with a cappuccino, and it was super tasty! The cake was perfectly moist and had a great texture. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and a great menu - I'll definitely be back to try something savoury!
C. P.
Popped in for a coffee then enticed by the menu to have some French toast . It was delicious and I will definitely be back to try out some other dishes . The venue is situated in the Ouseburn and had ample parking near which is free on a Sunday .
C. M.
Delicious food and beautiful venue in the best bit of Newcastle (biased!). We had the butternut squash curry and tempura cauliflower to start, would recommend.
E. C.
Delicious seasonal food from local suppliers. Fantastic service, beautiful servewear and venue. This is the kind of place I always hoped would come to Ouseburn! I can't wait to take my family when visit.
J. D.
Fantastic food I loved especially 'Grilled Bavette Courgette on Sourdough with Gochujang Aioli'
A. P.
Five stars well deserved.
I don't know of many places where the food menu is strongly rivalled by the drinks menu. Both are clearly worked on hard and scrutinised regularly, making each visit exciting.
Moreover, staff are absolutely excellent (I really mean that).
This is an impressive outfit.
P. H.
Highly recommended. Upmarket, stylish but not too pricey at all. Loads of room to sit I.e. you're not on top of each other and you can choose up or downstairs.
Set in the heart of Ouseburn so only a stone's throwaway from the local boxers.
The food was incredible and a canny choice to boot from starters all the way through to puddings.
Cocktails available and a great choice of other drinks.
A sharing menu or stick to your own.I had the pie which was delish!
Service spot on
D. S.
Lunch today. Previously have had dinner and brunch, all have been really good. Today it was a little cold in the restaurant, and they were only serving small plates, didn't realise this beforehand. However, highly recommend the Cookhouse. Staff are great, always attentive.
D. J.
Everything deserves 5 stars; great staff, food, atmosphere, menu. I look forward to visiting again.
R. S.
Great breakfast/ brunch spot. Wanted some many things on the menu so ended up sharing. Will definitely be returning and trying the rest of the items.
A. D.
Highly recommended. One of the best breakfasts I've ever eaten.
Z. L.
Amazing food and drink. The environment is great.
B. E.
Lovely food in a lovely restaurant. It was a nice night and sat outside on the terrace. The staff were really good, friendly and attentive. Definitely not the cheapest place we've been to. It was worth what we paid though and will definitely be back in the future.
A. F.
Lovely lunch, with great service. Favourites was the pancake and cauliflower fritters.
H. G.
Having been recommended Cook House by a veritable plethora of friends and colleagues I had high expectations as I pulled up outside. It did not disappoint. From the simple but chic aesthetic to the understated but jovial background music, it was tasteful through and through. The staff were friendly and approachable but not overbearing. The menu offered a gastronomic range Gordon Ramsay himself would have been envious of. I had mussels. I don't even like mussels. I loved these ones. All in all 10/10 experience, had a great time, partner loved it. Would recommend to a friend.
m. j.
Popped in for a quick bite to eat, to be honest the menu had me confused, so I asked what was the most popular for lunch, so I ordered on the recommendation of the owner.
It was fantastic, I’ll call it a steak sandwich, it was cooked to perfection, one of the best I’ve ever eaten. I’ll be back.
C. B.
With an origin story that involves a converted shipping container in Ouseburn, as well as a mission statement that speaks of using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, Cook House presents a very relevant interpretation of taking pride in what you believe in. Which, obviously, is nice. But more importantly, these guys know how to cook. After a three-and-a-half year stint in their original premises, Cook House has recently opened up in a new Ouseburn setting just down the street, boasting the ability to handle more covers as well as a host of other benefits.
Offerings change regularly, but expect dishes such as whipped feta on sourdough, and a N'duja eggs. Word has spread, so book a table or arrive in good time to guarantee yourself a table bar.
It offers a relaxed vibe, a pared-back interior, and the food is seriously good, with fuss-free, colourful and exceptionally tasty plates at great prices. I would recommend going with a group so you can try everything on the menu.
D. A.
Great menu, great quality food, great service!
N. B.
Great food and service, although we were below the speaker so was a bit louder than we would have liked. Will definitely go again.
I. H.
Thoroughly enjoyed brunch, the nduja fried eggs on sourdough was tremendous.
O. P.
Went for brunch it was delicious! Really cool vibe and cost atmosphere!
J. F.
Incredible, delicious, thoughtful food, amazing staff, and an overall wonderful experience. Thanks to all the folks who took care of two weary travelers – we appreciate everything you did to accommodate us!
I. W.
Just superb. What an asset to Newcastle. Very high standard of food and service. Can't fault it. A real foodie's restaurant without being over-fussed. We'll be back soon I hope
J. M. F.
Inventive delicious and at the same time such wholesome food. Brilliant setting in our Ouseburn valley. Such history around us updated in this great restaurant. Staff very helpful and efficient
T. B.
Really impressed with Cook House. Didn't realise it is on our doorstep. Took a late lunch booking and was greeted by very friendly staff at the lovely Ouseburn restaurant. I went a bit off piste with a mixture of vegetarian and meaty options from the a la carte menu. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the food, wine and calmness despite strictly adhering to covid safety measures. Excellent staff, with the right amount of attention given to guests throughout the meal. As Arnie once said 'I'll be back'.
J. D.
I hate missing out, so I had to try both sauces that come with the bacon focaccia! Amazing, keep up the good work guys!
T. P.
We had a bottle of wine, shared a crab starter and had a main each. It was enjoyable. For this kind of price, we expected stand alone dishes, however, both our dishes (pork belly and trout) had identical garnishing - the same potato, leafy greens and similar sauce. A good place and atmosphere but was expecting more wow factor.
A. D.
Amazing atmosphere and easily some of the best food in NCL. The value is amazing - our new favourite.
M. E.
Friendly staff looking after you and serving good quality food.
Q. B.
Interesting. Lunched here recently and enjoyed it. Quirky location in an up and coming area. But very nice. It was raining the day I visited but there is a large deck for dining when weather permits. Service very attentive and happy. Food very good indeed. It is on my list for a dinner there! Highly recommended.
M. B.
Had Sunday lunch at the new place. Absolutely fantastic food and service - had a mixture of small and large plates - each was delicious and beautifully plated, it's obvious a huge amount of care and attention goes into sourcing ingredients, creation and presentation of the dishes. Menu had a wide variety of choices with an ample number of interesting vegetarian options which is nice to see. Very keen to go back for brunch soon.
L. V.
Had a 2 course lunch, with extra snacks, plenty of choices and great tasting, honest, homely food. I like the fact the menu is small and changes daily to suit seasonal supplies.
Staff were friendly and helpful, and the place is just lovely inside (light and airy).
Note - the pear and cinnamon shrub drink was delicious.
W. A.
Had lunch today in the new premises in Foundry Lane. What a great dining experience! The team have created a smart, comfortable dining space. Can't wait for the summer when the outside terrace will be developed. The staff make you feel extremely welcome and are knowledgeable about the food being served. The lunch menu had a great choice of freshly prepared food ranging from snacks and small plates to main plates.
Great value for money.
Will be visiting again. Soon!.
N. B.
Exceptional restaurant. Beautifully cooked food in a perfect location. Worth a Michelin star despite being ridiculously cheap. Pickles a particular highlight and probably the best soft drinks (shrubs and kombucha) you will ever encounter.
D. S.
Fantastic food. Fresh and different. Good outside seating for current covid restrictions. Well managed and friendly helpful staff. Welcome back!!!
S. P.
Went for breakfast/brunch and enjoyed amazing food and a lovely atmosphere. Staff are friendly and helpful and just an all round excellent place
M.
Glorious lamb.
This was the sharing dish, and there was plenty for 2 of us. The meat melted in the mouth.
Will visit again as there were lots of other things I wanted to try.
A. S.
Fabulous food in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. The dining area is airy and beautiful with a splendid open kitchen .
The staff were incredibly professional and friendly helping to add to be relaxed and welcoming atmosphere full stop
I am a huge fan of the simplistic but delicious locally sourced and ethical cuisine bringing modern twists to old classics.
G. H.
We went for lunch. Wasn’t too busy. Service was swift and friendly. I had the lamb ragu and my wife had the salt beef hash. Both were incredible. Good beer selection and the Bloody Maria was amazing. Would definitely recommend and want to check the dinner menu next time we’re in Newcastle.
M. H.
Really great quality food with original and creative dishes. Venue fits in well for the area and good service throughout. Definitely recommended for brunch or lunch date 👍
A. S.
Excellent contemporary restaurant located in a shipping container. All of the dishes were excellent but were very small for the price. Even after having cake I could have eaten more and at £37 for 2 adults and a child I felt it was overpriced. I particularly liked the Korean chicken salad.
R. L.
I miss the Cook House being open.
Brilliant food which, while perhaps on the more expensive side that maybe keeps it as an 'occassion' place for people who're on more of a budget, you can see every penny in the love, care, intelligence and excellent ingredients that make up the changing daily menu, the gorgeous interior, and the kind, wonderful staff.
Also, don't pass up a visit to the shop, or a chance to get the recipe book either.
O. M.
Quirky premises in a new location, very nice. The outdoor terrace space is great when the sun is shining. The menu is not your run of the mill fare. I do think the food is pricey!
A. R.
Always heard good things about the place, finally went and discovered all the good things were true. Had some great wine, bavette steak seasoned to perfection and some lovely dessert as well. It helps that it's also in a nice building surrounded by the other bars of the Ouseburn. A bit more expensive than the average, but definitely worth it.
R. G.
Amazing food - we walked in and sat down at a table for 2 with not a problem. Brunch was a salt beef hash with fried egg, French toast with plums, hazlenuts and yoghurt and cinnamon rolls. Delicious and well priced - would recommend!
C. B.
Great food and drinks, relaxed atmosphere and a cool venue. Awesome place to visit in the Ouseburn.
Worth a look in the shop downstairs as well if you visit during opening hours
a. p.
Great cooking, wonderful ingredients. Excellent service in stylish surroundings on what was formerly a derelict industrial estate (little sign of that now!).
A very welcome addition to Newcastle's restaurants.
Well worth the short journey out of the city centre.
M. D.
Sheer bliss to spend an afternoon here. Creative and exciting food awaits. Cooked perfectly. And served by an attentive and understated team who know their stuff. 5/5
s. c.
Been there for the first time today and need to visit again for their amazing food, drinks, and staff. Great place to be on a sunny day like this.
S. F.
We enjoyed an excellent late lunch in this quirky restaurant in the Ouseburn Valley. We both chose pork rolls and salad with homemade lemonade and were pleased with our choice of delicious fresh food.Visited for lunch, first time visit! Will Definitely go back! Both had the pork bun and salad.
M. W.
Loved it! Friendly staff, great locally sourced food cooked to perfection and an awesome atmosphere! Can't wait to try it through the seasons to see how the menu will adjust throughout
L. M.
Incredibly good seasonal food, great cocktails, house made soft drinks and pickles. Go for brunch, lunch or dinner. The staff are deeply lovely too.
I. P.
Good service. Clean and fresh. Seasonal menus and tasty food.

Flavours in abundance, fab restaurant setting,
Can’t wait to go back and I definitely will be
C. H.
Amazing food. I had the baked eggs with curried leeks and I think it was one of the best brunch meals I've ever tasted!
C. S.
Interesting food, had to wait a little longer than necessary between ordering and our food arriving but worth it in the end.
C. E.
A delightful and delicious restaurant in the heart of Ouseburn. Staff were very friendly and the food was packed full of flavour.
J. S.
Came into Newcastle for the day and so happy we found this spot for brunch. The food was fantastic, and the staff were super prompt and kind. Really impressed!
J.
It was average... Pretty place, pretty presentations, but the food was slightly above average and the drinks were kinda diluted. (Was there for lunch). Could just be my taste preference, so no offence intended.
M.
A very good breakfast all round
S. M.
Great place, great service......And the best bacon sandwich I've had!! Will definitely be back.
C. R. O.
Another gem that manages to be different from the rest. Food is great as ever. Anna is an amazing cook/chef and its great to see her new venture doing well.
C. W.
I believe it's a post industrial feel. In spite of our age we enjoyed the place, the food, and the welcome. Long wait for food that was pre-cooked however. It had been waiting for service for 30 minutes!
L. W.
Great coffee, very relaxed. Very good for a light lunch I've been here many times for meeting. I cannot recommend it high enough.
A. P.
Such great food I even bought the cook book to try it myself!
J. G.
Amazing food. The pork belly sandwich was delicious. I could have happily eaten 2! Fresh produce cooked well.
K. P.
Delicious sour dough, great summer slaw and homemade lemonade. Unpretentious restaurant with great service and friendly waiting staff.
M. G.
The food was delicious and elaborate but we were sitting downstairs and the table behind was extremely loud. Would have been nice to have a cosier atmosphere
D. “. K.
We backed their Kickstarter last year and have just got round to visiting - what a lovely treat! Great atmosphere, food and service. Will be back
D. N.
Quirky little eatery. Food was lovely and atmosphere is great. Industrial Location on the ouseburn is not a romantic one yet this place pulls it off..
G.
Great location, amazing food.
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience here.
I. S.
Not s good as it used to be. Scaling up has broadened the menu but at the expense ofthe attention to detail.
T. D.
Excellent food and friendly staff. Well worth it
D. W.
Beautiful place and the food is gorgeous

It's a trek from the city centre (15-20 mins) but a great walk through Nothumbria Uni campus and welll worth it when you get there. Salt beef hash is definitely recommended.

Near the Hôtel du Vin, another very good address.

Excellente adresse
À proximité de l’hôtel du vin, autre très bonne adresse.
Tarif très raisonnable le midi, je n’ai pas encore testé le soir, mais j’espère pouvoir revenir !

(Translated) A great concept for running a restaurant. Every day a different menu, conducted in accordance with the principle of no waste. The menu is based on local and seasonal products. This is not a restaurant for everyone, because of the diverse menu, rather for people who value good cuisine and interesting culinary ideas. Affordable prices. Must see on the Newcastle map

Świetny koncept na prowadzenie restauracji. Codziennie inne menu, prowadzone zgodnie z zasadą no waste. Menu opiera się na lokalnych i sezonowych produktach. Nie jest to restauracja dla każdego, że względu na różnorodne menu, raczej dla osób ceniących dobrą kuchnię i ciekawe pomysły kulinarne. Ceny przystępne. Must see na mapie Newcastle
