Reviews of Dobson and Parnell
O.
Really good dining experience which in my opinion is better than another fine dining establishment not to far away.
Absolutely brilliant 7 course tasting menu although the second desert was a bit heavy to end on.
Will be coming here again 5*
E. R.
Taster menu with wine pairing was a feast for the senses. Attentive service and perfectly paced dishes of exceptional quality and flavours. We will remember and savour our visit for a long time to come.

Roast verdict - lamb dinner, meat perfectly portioned and cooked. Very tender with little fat. Vegetables were all tasty and cooked wonderfully. Roasties were amazing and cauli cheese was beautiful aswell. Gravy was a little too runny but tasty nevertheless. Could have done with a little more veg also. Good dinner here I thoroughly enjoyed 9/10
Macerated strawberries on a strawberry mousse. - beautiful dessert however wasn't a moussey texture at all. Little bit on small side also.
Service and atmosphere was devine so overall rating of a good 9/10

Fabulous food, so so delicious and was absolutely phenomenal value for money. Drinks were superb and the staff were lovely, so friendly and professional. I really had a fantastic dinner and evening here. Will come back for definite when I'm next in Newcastle!!

Incredible restaurant! Food was fabulous (we had the tasting menu and wine pairing) wine was lovely and indeed perfectly paired. Service impeccable, special shout out to Adam, who was just amazing and lovely. 100% going back!

A true foodie destination, Dobson and Parnell offer a superb dining experience. Expertly crafted courses with perfectly selected wine accompaniments, interrupted only by delightful amuse-bouche delivered by smooth but prompt staff who are friendly, knowledgeable and confident. An all-round perfect dining experience.

Loved my evening here. The service was superb and the food was among the best I’ve tasted.
We tried the tasting menu which absolutely did not disappoint. Every course hit the spot for me bar 1 which was the fiancé’s fave (so absolutely this was down to personal taste).
Tasting menu didn’t often feel like it was ‘trying’ to be clever.
Not sure I can find the words to do the experience justice. But will try!
Tasting menu felt like it had structure. Starting with an enticing cheese and pickle doughnut which was superb and then moving through a fish course which was light and well balanced and on to what felt like the main event in the beef with artichoke purée. For me the beef and artichoke was sublime.
Dessert came in the form of a choux bun which was thoroughly enjoyable. The last dish - rice pudding with cherry refreshed the palette and felt like it closed the meal perfectly.
Also, the sourdough was excellent. Light and fluffy inside with, for me, the perfect chewy/crispy crust. I have a lot of respect for whoever baked that.
Champagne Mojito also worth a mention. Loved this cocktail. Would definitely recommend.
I only hope that everyone finds the right restaurant/experience for them.
First time here but I feel like we picked the right night. Hope to try again sometime soon but may avoid the full tasting menu. As lovely as it was I feel like I could explode. 😬

Enjoyable restaurant experience. Restaurant week menu for lunch. Friendly welcome, tables nicely presented laid with linen napkins, nice bread with herb butter and water. Well seasoned tasty food nicely presented. Portions on the lean side. The rhubarb sorbet topping the delicious rhubarb sweet was exceptional. Cost of extra vegetable options look a bit top heavy. The scratchy sounds frim the wall speakers needs sorting. Overall an enjoyable experience and I will be back for more.

We had the 5 course tasting menu with wine. The quality and taste was superb however the portions were tiny and we left hungry after spending £200+. I also don't think rice pudding is a dessert you'd expect to find or want to have at this kind of restaurant. The wine pairings were also lacking for me especially the white wines with the Lebanese white being more like strong water than wine. I always worry about tasting menus leaving me hungry and wanting more. It seldom happens in London restaurants but it happened this time. People seem to be totally impressed with this place but we left underwhelmed.
D. P.
Enjoyed the seven course set menu. Things which are great, the staff are very insightful about the food which I would add is excellent. Great choice of wines and recommendations for pairings. Nice little touch at the end with a selection of sweets.
G. C.
Nothing to dislike about this restaurant just off Newcastle quayside.
Attentive staff, beautifully presented food. Good classic cocktails with a twist. This place doesn't break the bank, but is worth every penny.

We had an amazing saturday evening here. Tasting menu with wine package - incredibly well put together and tasty. The staff were professional, friendly and knowledgeable about food and drink. Would love to go back but the prices might limit you a bit ;)
N. C.
Had a great time and loved the food. Price wise, this was a rare treat for us but the general service and atmosphere made it feel totally justified. Super friendly staff. Will be going back for sure in the hopefully not too far future
M. H. L.
The food was delicious with a vegetarian option of the tasting menu that was just as great as the “normal” one. And the wine match was really worth it. Staff is super friendly and explained the dishes and wine pairing very well. Highly recommended!
P. M.
Absolutely superb food! Me and my wife have been here twice and both times thoroughly impressed. Staff very courteous and friendly. Could not fault anything.
J. S.
We had the 7 course testing menu paired with wines which was excellent. The pairing of food and wine was perfect as well as the incredible knowledge and professionalism of Ola who served us. I would definitely recommend it!
K. N.
Good food in a pleasant restaurant environment. We had the 7 course tasting menu which was very good, albeit the first course was a little underwhelming (sweetcorn). The following six, however, did make up for it. I'd happily recommend and we will certainly be returning again.
P. R.
First time I'd tried a tasting menu. Food very good, presented with a little theatre. Nice way to spend an evening to be honest. A little expensive, but that's generally the case with tasting menus.
I. K.
Good food, great atmosphere, brilliant service. Everything was done to perfection. Great wine pairings. Good value as well actually.
P. G.
First class experience, food and staff. Leiwy was exceptional. Everything was faultless, clean and thought out, certainly worth visiting.

Went here for a birthday meal, it's posh for sure, swanky some might say. Service from staff high quality and food also very good, I mean I rarely order chicken in a restaurant, I mean it's just chicken how good can it actually get, very good is the answer. Unfortunately you will pay for this fine dining experience but that's fine, a welcomed treat, nice to see how the other half live, lol. Would I go again, sure if someone else was paying.
D. C.
A fine dining restaurant with a varied evening dinner menu. Food was good, but some dishes were a bit too salty. Decor was trendy. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about wine and chose two excellent white wines for us to enjoy with the meal. Overall it was nice, but didn't knock our socks off.

This is an amazing restaurant and deserved each and every one of its five stars and here’s why;
We first arrived at the restraint and was greeted by a very friendly and welcoming member of staff, when we arrived they were setting out table so we waited at the bar. Here I ordered an espresso martini. But by the time they had made the martini the table was already ready so we were asked if we wanted to be seated or remain in the bar. We chose to be seated and the server offered to carry our drinks for us which was helpful. Once seated in this gorgeous and comfy booth we were handed our menu with a wide selection of delicious sounding meals. I ordered the Mushroom ravioli for starter followed by a halibut dish which was served with fresh black truffle. This is where I ordered another drink - a mojito (which was lovely might I add) - which was brought to me swiftly. Before we were brought our starter we were each served a cod liver cream thing which name I have forgotten and I think it was served as a palette cleanser, it was delicious. After enjoying this pre-starter we were then brought the starter we ordered which was absolutely lovely. After this our main followed which was again absolutely amazing, the food served here has been some of the best I’ve had in a long time. The menus were handed out again and we ordered our desserts. I ordered a selection of ice cream and some petit fours. Before the dessert came we were brought a predessert which was a caramel chocolate mousse which was again delicious. The ice cream followed which was lovely and creamy and full of flavour. The petit fours were served in a wooden box that had a look of a cigar humidor and was served on a bed of cacao nibs. The petit fours were a lovely end to a lovely meal. All of this also came at a respectable price, being under £250 for 4 people. We tipped very graciously and were given our coats. Let me just say I was definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone and it’s definitely the best restaurant I’ve been to so far in Newcastle. I plan on going again.
A. L.
Not surprised knowing that they got a Michelin guide reward. In affordable price, they offer excellent food, service, and selection of wine. Casual and made me get really comfortable while feeling like I was in a 5 stars hotel at the same time.
G. F.
Had a really nice meal here. The setting is lovely, staff were friendly and attentive, drinks were tasty. The steak was average at best, which was unfortunate, but it didn't detract from the evening and Mrs F's salmon was cooked perfectly. Had a really nice visit and we'll be coming back
L. R.
We went here for restaurant week and will definitely be going back! Everything on the plate has been well thought out and balanced and the ingredients themselves are amazing. The selection of gin and tonics is great as well as the wine
G. E.
Went here for restaurant week after Blackfriers said they were full but that there was a newly opened sister restaurant. I'm so pleased we we ended up here, it didn't disappoint. Fantastic welcoming staff, great surroundings and an excellent menu. We had duck starter, Black cod main and bread pudding desert. The bread pudding is impossible to describe and do justice but definitely one of the best deserts I've had. New favourite restaurant?...quite possibly!
m. b.
Thoroughly enjoyed the meal we had and the service was excellent,I would happily recommend this restaurant for the food and service
P. D.
Staff is amazing! Went for my boyfriend's birthday and really enjoyed our time there. We weren't amazed by the starters, mine was quite salty. We both had the bass for main and that was great, but still salty. The dessert was the best part! I had the blackberry mille feuille and it was very nice! Overall, would go back but I don't think it's better than places like Peace and loaf in Jesmond.

21 Queen Street in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is an address with a foodie provenance. It was here that Newcastle’s version of Rick Stein had his original restaurant (it’s since moved to another location) before he took over a myriad of other eating locations in the city.
These days, its home to Dobson & Parnell and I ate there just before Christmas with family members. I’d looked at the menu on-line before making a final decision about where to eat and, frankly, I wasn’t overly impressed. Its seemed to be offering bog-standard bistro type food and didn’t particularly excite me. The reality was somewhat different.
After a drink, in a nearby bar, we arrived to a very warn welcome and were shown to a table at the back of the dining room. It being the season of office parties, there were Christmas crackers on the table – not a good thing! The restaurant though at that stage was quiet and there was only one table which was obviously an office group out for their Christmas shindig. Although they got a bit noisy they soon moved on to a more lively venue.
My starter was black pudding with pickled mushrooms and a poached egg. Tasty enough, it was nothing special. I’d chosen duck breast for my main course and having ordered it ‘pink’, I was, to be honest, expecting something overcooked and grey to arrive. I didn’t take any pictures, apart from the starter, because I didn’t intend to write about this place as my expectations were low. I don’t remember how the duck was served either but do remember than it was perfectly cooked and full of flavour – exceptionally so. And then the moment when I felt a tiny piece of shot in my mouth! This wasn’t intensively farmed duck, it was wild duck shot on the wing by someone with a gun. Wonderful! I felt as though I’d won the lottery. I’ve racked my brain and I’m certain that the menu didn’t say ‘wild duck’. I wonder why not. It makes all the difference in the world to the taste and the texture. It was delicious.
The other great thing about this restaurant was the guy who welcomed us and looked after us throughout the meal. We interrogated him without mercy about his life, work, education and his interest in shooting ducks in Yorkshire and he kept us entertained and looked after us very well. His name is Charles.
If you’re in Newcastle go to this place and don’t be put of by the ‘normal’ of the menu. They obviously know what makes a great product and, unusually for these days they don’t oversell it. In fact understated seems to be the hallmark of Dobson & Parnell. If you end up being served by Charles, you will be very fortunate indeed!

The wife and I booked a table for Sunday dinner (not sure if bookings are required, didn't seem busy on our visit). Seated straight away, lovely restaurant and staff were very professional and welcoming. I went for chicken the wife beef, both meals came out with not much wait. Food was delicious, maybe could of done with a bit more chicken but no complaints. Finished off with a bit. Of sticky toffee pudding which was glorious! Would definitely return.
Returned following lockdown, holy moly what an amazing Sunday dinner. The creamy cabbage was out of this world I could of just had a plate of that on its own! For a Sunday dinner it was so lite but filling with out feeling bloated so I had plenty of room to get that sticky toffee pudding down , again.

What can I say except amazing the food was stunning the staff lovely ,the chef's cook amazing food thank you for making our anniversary fabulous we will go back 100% recommend
L. S.
Fantastic food, fantastic service, fantastic atmosphere. Amazing birthday lunch from my family.

Had a fabulous meal here. The steak was absolutely delicious - possibly the best I have ever had! Excellent service and value

What a find.
Stunning inside and out. One of the few places that you can actually hear the other person at the table, background music as it should be BACKGROUND.
Really helpful staff, the food was outstanding gorgeous. Fabulous tasting menu, add the pairing wine.
You can't go wrong. Best dining experience in a long time.
Will definitely be going back.

Was here for a birthday dinner, had the seven course tasting menu with wine pairings for a bit of a luxury. The food was incredible and the pairings were perfect. Enjoyed getting an explanation of the dishes and their pairings. Great service, lovely setting, couldn't fault it.
R. L.
Really enjoyed the tasting menu with wine pairings, food was interesting and tasty and the service was top notch.

Not just a meal but an experience!
I was took by my wife as a suprise for my Birthday and certainly was an evening I'd never forget. We had the 7 course taster menu and every course was amazing!!!! The Chefs detail in the presentation and flavours where devine. The only thing better then the food was the staff. There interaction with you was perfect, all where extremley knowledgable and warm to you. The ambience of the restaurant is fantastic.
Thank you so much for the perfect evening.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐➕

What an exceptional evening!!!! We had the 7 course tasting menu (with cheese) and matched drinks. Our server Angela was outstanding, sharing her knowledge of the wine and drink selection in such a genuine way, nothing pretentious almost as if she was sharing her views and chatting with friends. Food was great,, the white chocolate and marshmallow dessert blew my mind, was it the tarragon or the Yuzu that made it. I don't know only chef can answer that question. Thanks for a great evening Dobson and Parnell.
L. M.
Absolutely delicious food, excellent service and polite staff. December Christmas set menu vegan options where unreal!!! Beautiful interior as well, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you!
A. D.
Always good. Amazing staff with a friendly and professional service with really nice and well presented food
P. M.
Superb food. Beautiful premises. Friendly staff and good value.
M.
I have been there once but this was the most awesome experience I ever had in the restaurant.
We ordered 2for1 set menu. Food was very tasty - I had a "corn fed chicken" for a main.
We agreed to have our wine chosen for us by a sommelier and he did a great job. Each of us got a different wine that would go well with the dishes we ordered.
The atmosphere was great. Very comfortable to sit, not too loud.
The staff was friendly and professional.
They also took jackets from us at the door and after we finished dinning and were going to the door waiters waited already there with out jackets. We didn't have to ask to get our jackets back, we weren't even asked which ones are ours, they were just waiting for us ready to put on. Those are small things but they make the experience really nice:)
I am looking forward to come back there!
P. G.
Lovely restaurant. Best steak I'd had in years. There for lunch, great service.
K. B.
Wow! Had the five course Taster menu. Amazing food. Such a relaxed vibe and great knowledgeable and friendly welcoming staff.
E. P.
I love this place. I'd go every night if I could. Food, staff and ambience all brilliant. Not cheap, but well priced for what you get.
L. E.
I've fancied trying this restaurant for ages and finally got the chance today. We went off the set menu because the choices were great. £15 for three courses (with the usual supplements for steak and cheese board). The staff were very attentive without being in your face. The food was delicious and just the right amount when you need to fit in the courses. I love Allendale beers too so the bottle choice was great. I will definitely be going back 😁
T.
Just the most wonderful restaurant and staff. This time we tried the 5 course tasting menu as a treat plus the cheese, it was so lovely. Thank you all : ) cheese. You must try
A. J.
Beautiful food on the tasting menu matched perfectly with wine. Highly highly recommend
A. B.
Delicious lunch, beautifully presented and excellent service. The smoked salmon starter was superb and the courgette and potato fondant a real hit. All the staff were so helpful and understanding of our 2 year-old party member who was more interested in what was going on in other parts of the restaurant than his own lunch! Excellent value for money too.
S. F.
Just ate at Dobson and Parnell tonight and had a fabulous experience. Great food, very knowledgeable wine waiter, great staff and lovely atmosphere. Great staff attitude and polite. Took our coats, didn't wait too long, brought bread etc. There was a podium near our table though where the staff seemed to just watch tables from and being the closest table it was a bit off putting.
S. R.
Friendly, warm atmosphere. Seasonal food and attractive presentation. Loved my Smoked Haddock Risotto followed by White Chocolate, Almond biscuit and Plum Sorbet. A lovely place to spend a few hours!
T. C.
Restaurant week and the food was delicious. Risotto followed by steak and belly pork between us. Desserts cost extra but well worth it. Sticky toffee pudding just sweet enough. Would definitely recommend giving it a try
L. C.
Exceptional food and outstanding service. So glad we tried it, my new favourite restaurant in Newcastle.
r. r.
Wow Took my partner for a birthday lunch. This is the best restaurant we have been to.5* food at 3* prices. From entering the staff were welcoming Impeccable service. The food was amazing. Smoked haddock I on a bed of barley risotto poached egg and a chive oil. Ham hock terrine. Followed by pork fillet
And cornish cod with couscous and curried cauliflower.
We cannot reccomend this restaurant too highly
N. H.
Great staff attitude and polite. Took our coats, didn't wait too long, brought bread etc. There was a podium near our table though where the staff seemed to just watch tables from and being the closest table it was a bit off putting. Food wise it looked great but to be honest was lacking flavour and I was still starving after 2 courses.
J. A.
My husband and I had our Christmas night out here. The food and service was great. The only thing that slightly spoilt it was the raucous work party sat directly across from us. We were hoping to avoid that as we were eating early - at 6pm, but I guess in December it is the season for early drinking. It didn’t spoil the night though and we had a delicious meal. Would thoroughly recommend it, and the sister restaurants of Hinnies in Whitley Bay and Blackfriars.
A. N.
Great food and service. Went to a Spanish themed tasting menu with paired wine in November. The night was so fun and informative without being forced. Five courses and wine with each course for £50 a head. Very reasonably priced, amazing food and wine. Felt very satisfied at the end. Definitely recommend this restaurant. Look out for more evenings like this!
G.
Amazing food, service and ambiance
Best food I have tasted in a long time
Don't be fooled by the portion size, it's more than enough food to not make u one feel over full
R. M.
Having enjoyed a birthday meal here we came for a second visit. Same great service, delicious and beautifully presented food. The two for one three course deal on a Tuesday night is one of the best value deals in Newcastle. Casual fine dining experience for anyone looking for a break from stuffy dark restaurants serving predictable classic French. Thanks again guys!
P. S.
The service was great not rushed great atmosphere. I would like to say that Adam the person who served us was attentive and happy to engage in conversation and was very helpful with the menu and wine and is an asset to the restaurant. I would go again and would recommend it.
D. d.
Quality dining with pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive staff. Comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Great place.
J. B.
A great restaurants in a nice setting. Staff are very friendly and happy to accommodate any requirements. The menu offer a good choice to suit most diets and is all made from locally sourced produce. Would highly recommend.
J. M. F.
Absolutely loved it! Utterly exquisite from the start! I will bring everyone I know and love and more to this first class restaurant! Thanks so much! X
E. D.
Absolutely fantastic - had the set menu for a table of 13 for lunch on my sister's hen weekend and everything was delicious. Lovely staff who couldn't have been nicer or more attentive. Would highly recommend!
D. F.
Had lunch on a Tuesday and there's a brilliant meal deal but even if that hasn't been on, I would rate the food as excellent. Beautifully presented and delicious food with attentive and discrete staff who were first class. I'll be back.
F. J.
5 star service, with excellent food.
C. H.
Great tasting menu. Staff are wonderful. Wish they would drop the masks so we could hear what they are saying.
L. Y.
Excellent meal delivered to my door. One of the best Christmas dinners with easy to follow instructions. Would recommend if you can't get out to the restairant
R. M.
Excellent venue for daughter's wedding breakfast food was delicious staff very attentive and service second to none
D. B.
For every course the charming Stephen advised a delicious glass of wine to match. All waiting staff including David were lovely. However, the food was so delicious, words can not do it justice. Massive kudos to the chefs but let's also remember the staff front of house x
S. M.
Food amazing - something different from the norm. Surroundings lovely. Staff were great friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. Manager welcoming and very attentive to everyone in a busy restaurant. Well done we will be back xx
K. O. D.
Amazing food and attentive service. We enjoyed our visit and will be back.
S. W.
Lovely experience and staff - nice to have vegan options at high end restaurant for lunch. Pretty simple food in the menu but made perfectly with quality ingedients :)
J. W.
Second time we have visited Dobson and Parnell with a 3 year gap in between. We weren't disappointed. The 7 course taster menu was incredible (especially the langoustine) and the service very good. Lovely to see it doing well after a few years.
C. C.
Excellent food and service. Wine list was small but very good quality.
J. O.
Just sent a lovely couple of hours having lunch at Dobson and Parnell Newcastle - really good food - portions not too huge - priced very well - and lovely pleasant engaged staff which makes a change. Had lovely roast cod with a great curry roast cauliflower. Definitely worth a visit.
C. K.
Excellent, classy restaurant. You'll be well looked after by knowledgeable, friendly and efficient staff. The food is always of amazing quality. The lunch deals (2 courses for £15 or 3 for £19) are excellent value.
A. P.
Great food at really reasonable prices. We had the taster menu and after trying other taster menu's in Newcastle I have to say this was really good value. We will definitely be going back again.
I. S.
Had food and wine taster menu. Food was very nice with a different wine for each of the five courses. Service was excellent from knowledgeable staff.
M. T.
Great roast dinner. Lovely negroni. Sunday menu puddings a bit short of the mark but made up for by delicious fudge with the coffees.
m. c.

Superb food. We had the 5 course taster menu, each one a delight.
D. L.
Upmarket restaurant , mid range pricing, quality Sunday lunch. Don't expect any large portions. Comfortable seating. Expensive wine list. Service good.
A. S.
Very good food, service was outstanding! Only negative thing was that one table was extremly loud which brought atmosphere down quite a bit, but can’t blame the restaurant for that!
L. H.
Fabulous food and friendly attentive staff. Always a wonderful atmosphere in restaurant. The ladies lunches are great fun and superb value for money!
T. W.
Wonderful restaurant with excellent service. The food was outstanding. We were a last minute large group booking this was not a problem for the restaurant. Speedy service. Would highly recommend
F. F.
Eaten at Dobson & Parnell several times now and both its food and service never fail to impress. Its set menu option is fantastic value. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Newcastle.
M. C.
Absolutely fantastic place and the meals were superb. Great New Year meal and our waiter, Martin, was wonderful. Cannot rate highly enough.
S. R.
Went during restaurant wk, Jan 18, Delicious food, good service, recommended.
S. M.
We had the tasting menu with wine, superb and tried a few things I would normally steer clear of that were excellent. But what made it was the service and the wine, Charles (sommelier & waiter) was very knowledgeable and passionate about the wine and the food
D. S.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Simply great. Will return.
J. E.
Chris was excellent, welcoming and professional, he guided us through the menu. Pork was best I've ever had. Will definitely be coming back.

Wouldn’t expect anything more from such a fancy restaurant.

Great food, wine and cocktails, good service, really like the decor. Lost a point as the toilets are OK, but really not up to the standard of the rest of the venue.
I. D.
We had 7 course with wine paring and it was excellent. Can highly recommend this place to others.

(Translated) Unpretentious restaurant with an English dresscode (short tee shirt for dinner). The food, wines and cheeses were all good without being incredibly fine. The originality was there and the service very correct.
(Original)
Restaurant sans prétention et avec un dresscode à l'anglaise (short tee shirt pour le diner). La nourriture, les vins et les fromages étaient tous bons sans pour autant être d'une finesse incroyable. L'originalité était au rendez vous et le service très correct.
