So impressed! Food was SO DELICIOUS and came RAPIDLY. Experience was smooth and 10/10 overall.
We ordered Trash Browns and VGN Wachos as starters, and they came shortly after the drinks. Both were absolutely delicious, but especially the Trash Browns - the liquid cheese was INCREDIBLE! The Candy Floss cocktail made our tongues feel sophisticated; there was layers to it! Burgers were scrumptious, but we were quite full after the starters. Hand cut chips are offered instead of fries, and these come with Cajun seasoning.
Dedicated vegan spot on the menu, and most of the sides you could make vegan if requested!
They were obviously very busy and couldn’t seat all the big groups coming in (so book in advance if in a group), but they catered to as many people as possible!
Although they were busy, the staff looked relatively calm and content, which is always a green flag for a hospitality business.
It’s an underground place but there was good lighting and the interior had lots of open brick. We sat by an old fireplace which was cool! Seating was well arranged.
The waiters were super efficient and helpful (one provided takeaway boxes when we asked and was super friendly about it!)
Lots of stairs so I don’t know how wheelchair accessible it would be? Perhaps there’s another entrance?
All in all a wonderful experience and would love to return.

Tempted by the menu for this place as the photos looked insane! The food did deliver exactly as the pictures looked, but maybe we weren’t hungry enough as both meals seemed excessive! The taste and quality was great but after a while it all felt too greasy. The salad wedge although a simple item was absolutely delicious and needed to cut through the rest! Worth going but make sure you have an appetite

Amazing burger, excellent service from team (although manager who seated us didn't seem too happy about it). Also got a shake, can't wait for the Glasgow venue.
We were a group of 11 on Saturday 12th Feb.

Let's start with the not so good. The location is in a basement. Maybe the ventilation is not good enough so it smells a bit.
But... Once the food arrives you won't remember that. The burgers are really good. I had one of the butter milk fried chien burgers and a milk shake and both were really good. The burgers come with fries or chips. The friends I think have rosemary salt on it which is a nice touch.
The kids meals are a generous portion. The burgers can with one patty but otherwise it was the same as the adult burger. The kids milkshake is half portion but was otherwise the same as a full size one.

Fabulous! Delicious burgers so juicy & fresh....great drinks & shakes, in quirky surroundings, shout out to our server David! Looked after us really well & was very friendly! Can't wait to return:-)

I am so glad I found this place, I Absolutely loved my order (chicken burger with loaded fries). The outdoor seating area is nice during the warm summer days. Service was good and I did not have to book in advance. On the other side I do think it’s quite pricey for Newcastle.

Me and my husband visited today on the recommendation of my niece, her husband and 13 year old daughter. We are so pleased we came, it was my husband's Birthday.
Food was very tasty, best onion rings ever!
We were advised before we came not to order starters and we were pleased we didn't. If we'd had starters I don't think we would have finished our main meal which would have been a shame.
Waiters are very pleasant and do not hassle you when ordering. Loved everything about the place nd we will certainly return.

Insane food and great staff.
This place is a must visit and I am sure all Fat Hippos are the same. You won’t be disappointed. Portion size is huge, so do feel you need to order loads.
It is a very popular establishment, so ensure you book in advance.
Top Tip: the Cheese Balls are nothing like you’ve tasted before. A must have
S. H.
We had bee wanting to try her for a while. Wasn't disappointed, great tasting food, big portions, good service. We both had different meals. One burger and the MI5, which was huge, I couldn't finish it all. They did offer to do a doggy bag in I wanted too.
B. R.
Great burgers! Staff were friendly and the menu was pretty extensive. The milkshakes were super tasty and the while the burgers sound like they'll be a soppy mess, they don't fall apart at all
A. H.
Would highly recommend grabbing a burger here as it's definitely good value for money. The staff are friendly and helpful. Portion size is good. Would recommend trying the dirty fries if you have a large appetite and can handle some spice.

Got to say I had the best burger for years last night at the Fat Hippo Newcastle.
Very pleasant atmosphere and helpful staff.
Will definitely be coming again.

Food was amazing, full of flavour and big portions! Great atmosphere and the staff that served us were lovely. Would definitely go back.

Nice Place, down stairs in a cavern but with outside umbrella seating, large portions, tasty food, particularly enjoyed the frickles. Had a variety to choose from including for the veggie vegans in our party, managed to fit us in on short notice party of 6 at 8pm on a Friday evening. I think the beer pricing was too high for 330ml cans, and although it was an eclectic mix of beer it was not our cup of tea.
L. F.
Amazing burgers and great range of sides. Surprisingly good vegan menu, quite a bit of variety which is unusual.
The service was excellent. The staff really upbeat and friendly. Food came quick enough and was good quality. The portions were enormous and neither of us could finish it!
R. T.
Fast service, great vegan options, attentive staff. Only downside was it was really cold inside where we were!
P. Z.
Not much to say here, the burgers are unreal and they live up to the price tag they come with. Staff are very welcoming and provide excellent service.

Ordered home delivery from deliveroo as we really like the burgers from Fat Hippo. Burgers and fries were top notch but we were very disappointed with the milkshakes. £8.80 for two half empty chocolate milkshakes which basically just tasted like nesquik. Really disappointed with the quality and quantity. I have had better milkshakes from a supermarket for a fraction of the cost. Definitely won't be ordering a milkshake from here again.

We’re usually very satisfied with the quality of food at Fat Hippo. Therefore, we’ve decided to try something new, their Halloween special - the Shreddy Krueger. The burger didn’t look anything like in the pictures shown on the website; it wasn’t very appetising, and I felt like there is something missing, perhaps some sauce or ingredient because the burger tasted a bit plain. We’ve ordered sweet potatoes and again, we were very disappointed with the quality; not very appetising, the fries looked like they reheated them inside a microwave. However, it was a Friday night and the place was busy, so my judgment is that the kitchen staff was under pressure. Despite all of this, I’ll visit again, because I like the place, and the Wild Bill burger always tasted great!
L.
Had a super cosy experience with friends despite the very hectic Saturday night crowd - our server George was upbeat and lovely and a small problem with our food was sorted really quickly. Would recommend and hope George is having a lovely day

Quite literally the best burger I have ever had!
Whilst visiting family I spent the day in Newcastle and they took me down some dark stairs to what turned out to be the most incredible little resteraunt I've been to in a long time.
The staff were helpful and cheery and attentive and the place had very good air conditioning, and considering it was the hottest of the year so far, was most welcomed.
The born slippy burger was moist cooked to perfction and screaming out with flavours! The superfries me upgrade for the fries that come with the burger were a little over indulgent but amazing nonetheless.
I would and have highly recommended this place to anyone who enjoys a fancy burger with all the trimmings.
C. L.
Okay.
We had a booking for 8 people and were told only when we arrived at the restaurant that they had no beef burgers tonight. They eventually got replenished during the night and we got served 1h after placing order. We would have liked getting free starters or small discount for the inconvenience but nothing. Food overall good but if we had known we would not have waited so much and we would have gone to five guys instead, it was not worth all the wait. Staff friendly but could have been more customer focused.
Atmosphere and decoration was good.
J. w.
Staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. The batter on the chicken was amazing and the overall burger (The Last Samur-thigh) was a great mix of flavours.
S. T.
Stop thinking about it and just come! Amazing food, lovely staff (Raz and Lesley) and a great atmosphere. Highly recommend!
N. B.
super nice burger
super tasty fries and mega tasty hippo sauce nice ambiance will come by again soon
L. B.
Unreal burgers, great food and staff. Excellent knowledge on gluten free options. Arrive hungry as you will be stuffed by the time you leave!
A. S.
My first time visiting the restaurant (I've had a burger from the trailer at an event and loved it). We visited for a pre-theatre meal. Staff were very attentive and friendly. The portion sizes (my daughter ordered off the kids menu) were HUGE. I ordered the Stinky Pete and it was amazing, the IPA I had to drink was lovely and refreshing. £30ish for 2 people with drinks was really good value. Now my son wants to come along in a couple of weeks.
V. B.
The food is great. I'm a vegan so I enjoy the vegan options. There's options for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. Only thing that needs to improve the is the location really. Relatively quick service. It's a considerable amount of money, but well worth it. All I'd hope for is to continue getting more vegan options including vegan deserts. Very good place if you have a family/friends with different dietary needs.

*updated review* Usually I’m a massive fan of Fat Hippo and really enjoy the atmosphere and food however tonight was a compleat let down. Booked for 7:30 for the three of us got seated and waited about 15/20 minutes for someone to come over which isn’t unusual. Starters came out and where lovely however, had to ask for knife and fork as we sat for about 5 minutes while they where getting cold as we had not been given any. Second issue was then we waited over a hour for our burgers, and none of us had drinks left as well, which I had to ask to get more, only for the waitress to not put them on. I had to go up and ask for them where the staff member explained that they had not been put on our order which was annoying for the fact that we had practically finished our food and I need to have a drink with my meal so that I can eat. Like I said usually I would give this place 5 stars but tonight was really lacking with the service and wait times especially for a Tuesday night…
C. R.
Popped in here for a bit of a nosh up whilst shopping.
Been here a few times, but I’ll just review this one time.
A warm welcome and decent seating. It’s a nice atmosphere, but you need to eat your carrots because it’s a dark place, but it’s a nice mood even in the mid-day.
Anyway, we were served by a lovely waitress with a… french accent I think? Non-the less I wanted to make a point of this lady, she was a great waitress and a pleasure to be served by her.
We seated and we was near a chimney, where a fire place would have been once upon a time, which is no issue. The place is nippy. Maybe it’s the chimney? I don’t know? We’ve been sat in that spot every time so your guess is as good as mine. the wife got some Prosecco rose cocktail which was flavoured with rose water and a rose flavoured ice cream (a Valentines special, which is shame)
It was busy, more busy than I expected, so service was faster than I expected which was nice.
We got the valentines Siriex Burger each with fries.
In the photos of the burger, the steak you get as the filling looks medium rare, pink in the middle.
Ours was well done, but soft and easy enough to eat and the burger was a lovely treat to eat.
The one criticism is not the food, but you get served with a metal tray with with some paper on the bottom. The paper gets soggy easily. I’m fussy bloke and eat me burgers with a knife and fork. Paper is paper and can’t stand wet liquid for long before it gets soaked through and gets all over me burger when I cut through it.
Anyway, the missus ordered another cocktail and was rather Merry.
I got me myself a Cookie Dough pie with ice cream that was lovely and warm with some vanilla ice cream. It was soft and sweet, with some chocolate sauce dribbled around. It could have done with some fresh fruit to cut through the sweetness, but I’m a greedy thing and ate it all cause it was really nice.
We paid, left a tip and we trotted on our merry way. The waitress was outstanding, friendly and a joy to be served by. It’s not too pricey, it’s good nosh and it’s a nice place.
I wish they’d keep the cocktail and burger instead of it being a Valentine’s special, but that’s life.
S. B.
The best burgers ever , excellent service amd naughty milkshakes....Good stuff
R. S.
Amazing gluten free coeliac friendly burgers. The manager who took my order was fantastic and was excellent at his job. Will definitely be back to try all the different burgers and sides! I also had one of their boozy milkshakes which was unreal. If you're planning on visiting, definitely make yourself hungry before you go because this food is biiiggg.
M. M.
Nice little burger place. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was great, and there was no quibble about me customising my burger. Nice touch to offer multiple different sauces for you to dip your fries in. It was really quiet when we arrived at 1645, but within 10 minutes or so it got a lot busier. However, there were enough staff on hand to deal with the rush and we did not notice a delay.
C. L. N.
Visited last night for the second time and wow! Yet again the team looked after us so well - from the moment we were greeted to the moment we left.
Good service is great and perfect timing - and the food itself is second to none! We've never had a burger like it!! Delicious!
It was my partner's sons 20th Birthday and the team brought him out a lovely chocolate brownie with a candle in to celebrate. He couldn't be happier.
I can't say enough how fantastic this place is - you're doing great! Thanks again and see you soon!
M. B.
Perfect burgers, really fun menu. Chicken burger was amazing. Friendly staff, quick service but not rushed. Keeping anti-Covid measures. Loved the place, would definitely come back again, wish there was one near us in London.
K. B.
Absolutely amazing. Had heard good things but this was another level. Friendly, chatty and attentive staff that really made it what it is. The food came out so fast and was so tasty, will definitely be returning
A. M.
You can't beat a good burger and the option to go gluten free makes it even better. Friendly staff and great value for money. Would recommend the Stinky Pete.
T. S.
Restaurant week was a great deal, but even if it's not restaurant week these are the best burgers in Newcastle!
A. A.
Staff were fantastic, food was surprisingly average which was really quite disappointing, especially considering the above average prices.
The burger felt a lot like something you’d get from a greasy spoon type place. Cheap tasteless bun, meat was dry and didn’t scream anything special. Sides were nothing special. Perhaps the chef was going through a bad time or something, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt since the reviews here seem to be glowing, and I’m usually quite easy to please so a poor review is unusual from me.
Staff did rescue the experience, they were lovely and made you feel welcome.
Update, went again and it really isn’t anything special for the price.
K. N.
That was very good! I had “Fat Hippo” beef burger with added jalapeño peppers and it was just exactly what was missing. Loved it👌🏻 Sauces were really nice too!
M. D.
Fair feast. Finest burger I can remember worth visiting
j. M.
I loved the feel of staying in underground. Safety maintained with Busy environment . Great food. I tried FAT HIPPO and dirty chips . Dirty chips are sexy . Will come again .
C. s.
brilliant restaurant.Staff super nice and accommodating, couldn't fault them at all.
my GOD the frickles are amazing if you live your pickes/gurkins. I could have eaten 10 portions.
chicken burger was to DIE for and my partners 4x4 burger was massive... not a single fault from me.
prices are reasonable considering the size of the burgers
one minor thing from the mr... "fat hippo restaurant. skinny cow toilets" they apparently are tiny (the mens at least. I didn't use those facilities).
we WILL be returning again.
D. D.
Outstanding burger. Lunch time pit stop and the food was excellent, great selection of craft ale, could have sat for hours!
B.
Very Good Food!
They have a very nice selection of vegan/vegetarian meals and drinks which is some of the best vegan food I've had. The drinks include alcoholic milkshakes and slushes which are delightful. They also have an extensive range of beef/chicken burgers to cater for any gammons that are dragged along...
The staff were friendly, food was served fast, the place itself was really nice. Would recommend going. The only sad thing is that I don't live locally so won't have the chance to go again for a while...
A. P.
I've been twice recently and have loved both times with my family.
The food is amazing and very hard to fault.
However on my 2nd visit we were sat out side of the "stalls" and did find it rather noisier which lead to some issues with miss communication on our order (which was quickly resolved) and talking to my son (the only reason I've marked its as a 4 and not a 5).
Cant wait for my next visit.
R. T.
Tried the Fat Hippo as part of Newcastle Restaurant Week, it was a fantastic burger restaurant. The decor is trendy and funky with it being a underground space. The staff were friendly and inviting. I had the Fritz and Dips as a starter and Swiss Tony burger. Both dishes were tasty and a good portion, i would recommend trying the Hippo sauce which is like a burger sauce but i had on the side for dipping my chips. If you are in Newcastle and fancy a burger this is the place for you.
N. L.
The burgers and the vibes are nice. There’s a good selection of burgers and sides. Solid food but nothing special
C. D.
Big burgers! The burgers here are awesome. Huge sized and very flavoursome. I had the PB double J, which was excellent. My boyfriend had the bubba Gimp which was awesome. The burgers are pretty pricey, most likely due to their huge size, price goes up obviously of you're gonna get sorry fries and alcohol etc (which is all craft and bottled/canned).
The dirty fries were good but not as 'dirty' as expected. I would also avoid handing out plastic tubs of dip when they can be served on ramekins when eating in.
R. E.
First visit and was very impressed with the burgers! First meal out in months because of lockdown and was very pleased with it all 😍
Only thing is I couldn't drink the gin slush with a paper straw! Had to ask for a new straw and still half went to waste as it was too much of a chore to get down!
A. L.
So much better than the last time I was here. Great spacing food and service. The only complaint I have is that the staff took my order wrong. Could be because of the loud music though..
M. W.
I’ve had a few burgers in my time and these guys are right up there in the top 5. Burger was cooked on point, dirty hashbrowns to die for and loaded milkshakes amazing. Def recommend to anyone visiting Newcastle
P. B.
Dog friendly.
Great underground gaff selling fabby burgers and drinks.
Customer service is second to none, incredible staff, super attentive, helpful and friendly.
Highly recommended to all!
Well done 👍🏼
J. W.
Excellent burgers. Recommended.
S. D.
Tried the MI5 rather than a burger. Tender chicken with nice crispy coating but somehow the batter was lacking flavour. The skinny fries were a bit too greasy for my taste too.
H.
Great food. Waiter George was very friendly abd attentive. Would go again
M. G.
Absolutely awesome food! Servers were really welcoming and talkative, great atmosphere and music too! Fries were hot and fresh, can’t fault this place, perfect for any occasion!
D. K.
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! We had the chicken strips, Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and Vegan PB&J burger. Big shout out to our waiter but I can't remember his name. (Please add some cocktails, slushie was awful)
L. L.
Born Slippy Burger was my favourite so far. Staff great as always. Service perfect despite restrictions. Would definitely recommend 👍
N. S.
A fantastic restaurant hidden behind a tiny door, wonderful friendly staff giving you great service with a smile. The food is incredible and to your table in record time... A1+
t.
The food is just unreal. I've been a five Guys lover for years, but this is a whole other level. The sides perfect the meal with original beers as the icing on the cake.
Service was good too, but the waitress could have spat at me and I wouldn't have cared the burger was that good.
S. S.
Gluten free options are out of this world. I love this place and wish I could afford to eat there every night
Seriously ... McDonald's who?
D. P.
Great place to eat friendly staff and great food, I go occasionally on my break from work if I want to treat myself to a nice lunch to get me through the day. I'm vegan and since moving to Newcastle it's difficult to find good vegan food but their vegan burgers are brilliant. The only downside with their venue is maybe their seating arrangement can be a little uncomfortable sometimes, the first couple of times I went I had a great seat but the last time I went I was sat in an area right next to the door from the kitchen that had few tables around me so it felt kind of distant from its regularly enjoyable atmosphere of the venue.
C. C.
Great food and service. Switched out chips for a salad without any hassle and food served quickly. Highly recommend a visit
d. a.
Real tasty belly busting burgers 👍
A. M.
Delicious food, good menu, fries with cheese isn't good at all, and the staff isn't that nice, one of them is good and the other is totally not.
M. G.
Brilliant food and quick service. Fat hippo burger and waffle fries are spot on.
A. C.
One of the nicest burgers I've ever had. Booze a bit expensive for my taste but....its a restaurant after all
D. B.
Amazing food as always. If you want a great burger look nowhere else, been here so many times now and Fat Hippo never fail to deliver
e. f.
The best burger I've had by far !!! Found this place while at Newcastle at the weekend and I enjoyed the food so so much !!! Cant wait to come back for more 🤤
D. M.
Not a great atmosphere and poor service - waited over 30 minutes after we'd been given desert Nevis for someone to come and take our order. Decent value.
C. M.
Love this place it has a Beatles feel too it and the staff are very friendly, the food is some of the best burger and fries IV ever eaten IV been a couple of times and can deffinatly say it would be my first choice when wanting a burger, we have never booked a table and they have always been accomodating. I will deffinatly visit again, a good recommendation would too be an even more extensive and Verity of burgers IV tried 4 different burgers my favourite is the chilli burger and the peanut butter berger.
A. c.
Best chips I've ever eaten. Really pretty place too. £6 meal menu is really good too especially for the price.
Make sure to ask for the £6 lunch menu if they don't give it to you straight away.
The staff are friendly too and there is great service there.
M. 1.
David David David what a great addition to a great burger place!!!
P. G.
The best place in Newcastle to line your stomach before a night on the Toon
A. T.
Love this place, the chicken and burgers are amazing. Good range on the menu and great milkshakes. Staff where very friendly and the price was very reasonable.
A. T.
Great service, great food!
D. W.
Fantastic burgers. I got the 4x4 and it did not disappoint. Upgrade to the dirty waffle fries, you won't be sorry!
C. W.
Absolutely loves it!!! Awesome service and the most delicious burgers ever!!! The peanut butter and double J is a must have!
C. M.
It's so much like an undiscovered hidden gem for burger lovers ! The theme fits perfect for its location as a basement but its warm welcoming waitresses and you tend to forget where you are as soon as you leave the restaurant. Perfect for families and dates if you want to enjoy a night alone or lose your sense of time! 😂
D. K.
Just left this place, lying in the hotel room and clearly sensing why it's called Fat Hippo.
Tasty, great service, 5/5, nice selection, will be back again.
R. P.
The food and the milkshakes here are amazing! Make sure you turn up feeling hungry though - you'll be sure to leave with a smile on your face
A. S.
Delicious burgers, swift and attentive service. Couldn't be better! Will visit again
J. A.
Awesome burgers and atmosphere! Fantastic gluten free options as well!
O. Q.
Really good food here in a fool underground environment. Not partially expensive either considering the big portions.all burgers are doubled as default expect the veggie/vegan ones.
M. T.
By far the best burger joint in Newcastle! Great unique choice of burgers available with brilliant attentive staff!
c. i.
I've wanted to try this place for a while but didn't really want my first experience be a delivery or take away so I was excited when I saw they have an outside dining area.
The staff were very helpful in making a booking despite being busy and having limited seating, and I'm so glad they were as despite it being a bit chilly outside the food was just amazing.
The burgers are worth every penny and they have some great specials. They have such a great choice on the menu that I'm looking forward to going back again.
S. H.
Food is amazing! Staff are lovely, great atmosphere and beautifully decorated
T. S.
Service was top notch, incredibly friendly staff. They handled a mix up with our booking really well. Food really wasnt great unfortunately, starters seemed really bland, not enough seasoning or flavour. Burgers were okay, not great not terrible just really not worth the price. No beer on tap either which was disappointing.
J.
Food was really, really good and I would say reasonably price. Food was well worth the 1hr+ travel. The welcome however… Dropped a star as front of house dismissed me and wouldn’t give me a table as I was by myself. He said he wanted to keep the tables for couples. Went outside and made an online reservation to which he then gave me a table. Made to feel really unwelcome which is not what you want when you’re out on your own. Other staff were lovely, a dark haired lady was very nice and attentive- sorry I didn’t catch her name!
A. M.
Fantastic little restraunt! Burgers all handmade and loaded fries also delicious! Polite and nice staff too
K. A.
Omg! I cannot believe I've only just found this place! It is absolutely amazing food and service. We booked a table, turned up early and the table was all set up ready for us. We got discount with our theatre tickets which we mentioned at the time of the booking and we didn't have to remind them to correct the bill for us as he had already done it. The waiter knew his stuff, offered us great advice on the food and some recommendations from his personal experience. Will defo be returning here in the future!
S. L.
Best burgers in town! Burgers are the main event here, but service is always good and a nice relaxed atmosphere
d. y.
Go to place if you wanna eat some burgers. They have 5-6 vegan options which is amazing as I am vegetarian.
Burgers were delicious and big enough, they come with fries on the side.
I also had milkshake which was good but not exceptional.
G. A.
If you love meat, then this place is for you! Not bad prices either, despite its brilliant food and unique location.
L. M.
Great food and great service (thanks Merc).
M. D.
Delicious food and great atmosphere! Large portions.
C. H.
We were seated at a tall stool table at the bottom of the stairs. I don't like tall stools (this is a personal dislike of course) but it was cold in the area where we sat (we all kept our coats on). The food took about 50 mins to arrive (we didn't have starters), as it's all burgers / sides I think that's a bit too long to wait. Drink service was also slow. I thought the music was too loud (again a personal dislike). The food though was OK.
S. D.
If I could rate this place more than 5 stars then I would. Have been to Newcastle numerous times over the years but never knew this gem existed, and probably wouldn't have found it had I not been looking online for somewhere to eat as it's not a street I would usually walk along when visiting the city.
Quirky wee place, though maybe not for the claustrophobic as it's underground! But I think they have outdoor seating so that'd be no issue in good weather I guess. Really well done out interior and comfy seats - got sat next to an old fireplace which just made me want to crawl into it and adopt it as a reading nook.
Food wise I could not fault a thing. Ordered the beer battered cheese balls (yuuuum!!) and veggie cheeseburger wachos (to die for...but v v hot!) Would recommend you order extra sour cream for this one, or have an ice cool drink to hand The only thing I would say is we ordered them for two, but the portions are very generous, and we wish we'd just ordered a single as we had some left over that we just could not finish to save ourselves! I also have it on good authority that the Oprah Sin-free (vegan burger) is also very good. It was all good.
Could've happily have sampled the entire menu to be honest! Though not sure I would've made it out the door if I tried.
All in all, really enjoyed the food and the place itself was clean and well spaced out (which is tricky in such a small venue) so felt quite safe. Staff were friendly and attentive too, which is always a good thing.
Would highly recommend.
C. N.
It was great, the burger was nice, although the spice blew my face off and made my eyeballs sweat, should've read the menu I guess! I was too excited to eat it that I didn't read the words "scotch bonnet ketchup" lol. Yowza...
I would give it 5 stars, but I can only give a 4 this time, and this is for 2 reasons.
The first reason: my grape soda ice cream drink was very warm and therefore not refreshing at all. The ice cream had melted and so it really was just a warm and creamy grape mess. Disappointing!
The second reason: I visited the men's room and was greeted to 4 blokes sharing 2 toilets, which was quite alarming considering this was my first time here. The bathroom was very small, and the layout meant if one man was using the urinal, a second man would be forced to get super intimate with this man in order to squeeze into the cubicle situated directly opposite. It's far too small in there and I felt pressured to hurry up my urination process in order to avoid a potential holdup. A bit awkward, really.
All that aside, I did enjoy the food, and the staff were mostly friendly and sociable, but one lass couldn't be heard from behind her mask and I had no hope of understanding her, so I chose to imagine her words instead. I will visit again, if you chill the drinks out a bit! :)

My faaave restaurant!! I loved it and I'll definitely be returning 🥰🥰
C. K.
A really good burger bar. I had the Gastro burger which had some really nice flavours and was well cooked. Portion sizes are quite generous. Was a little pricey though.
A. L.
Life changing burger! Every element of the Swiss Tony burger was perfection. From the sheen of the bun to the core of the patty- the quality was exceptional! We sat in silence eating as there were no words worth speaking in this moment of food joy. Thank you Fat Hippo, burger dreams do come true!
C. B.
Absolutely delighted to find such a good original burger joint, delish!
F. G.
Great food, great staff cant ask for much more than that.

Really comfortable atmosphere with friendly staff. Don't fill up before you come, the portions are very generous and the food is high quality. Great for small groups and couples. Not expensive compared to other chains that do similar foods.
T. H.
Food was great and the service we received was excellent. Got one slight complaint, the loudest man ever sat next to us so we literally struggled to hear eachother. Normally i don't care about a rowdy environment but this man was on another level. It clearly made other tables around us uncomfortable, staff should have asked him to keep it down. Other than that I would definitely recommend. Went for the gluten free options, was not disappointed, gluten free menu was great.
P. I.
Food was good and staff on the night were very helpful when 28 of us descended upon them and we were told we should have called to let them know we were altogether. We actually did call to book altogether but were told this wasn't possible and we should book tables online. Unfortunately we could only book tables of 8, 6 and 4
S. N.
Possibly the best meal I've ever had. Vegan burgers are the damage, they dont sell draft beer but the canned beer do the job, defo worth a visit
L. W. W.
You won't get a nicer burger any where else in Newcastle in my opinion. Very reasonably priced also, and totally unpretentious. Give the tater tots a go, lush.👍
J. C.
This is a very good restraunt. Burgers are good, it is a shame they ate patties rather than good thick burgers. Drink choices a bit dull. I would open an invite to the owner to Annie's Burger Shack in Nottingham, to see how they should be doing burgers!
K. W.
Amazing food, however the facilities aren't great, need to get the ladies toilets seen too!
D.
Went on a very busy Saturday night. Took 15/20 minutes to get seated as they had overrun on bookings. Drinks and device took a long time. Food was great but did take more than an hour.
More staff/better organisation is needed during busy periods.
a. r.
ONe of the best tasting burgers ever had. This place is just great, and I've been quite a few times now and it really doesnt disappoint. I really recommend this place to anyone looking for a good hearty meal.+++
R. K.
Great food and a fair price. Did feel a little rushed off by the staff.
P. M.
We had a very good meal. There was only one small glitch with the bill, which was amended, with some reluctance. The venue is very well proportioned, but it's nearly all subterranean, which won't suit everyone.
A. M.
Best burgers in Newcastle, recommend the dirty waffle fries!
S. J.
The burgers here are always juicy and delicious, prepared medium unless you choose otherwise. Tonight I enjoyed the Avo bacon burger - added American cheese, opted for the relish on the side. It was delightful!
d. “. D.
Popped in on a whim yesterday; we rang first but they said just come on over as they were quiet. Super accommodating, very clear on distancing and cleanliness protocols. Lovely service, checked on by around 3 members of staff, and the food was lovely. The PB&J burger was something else! And ive never found a place that does fried pickles, my favorite, they were lovely. The presentation and service is awesome, a new favorite when we are in the area for sure. Thanks for having us!
D. S.
Spent 4 days in Newcastle and went to Fat Hippo on the last day. Ended up in bed at 9pm because we couldn't move aft we the feed we had. Probably the cheapest meal we had and the one we got the best value for. The chicken burgers are amazing and upgrade to the dirty fries you wont regret it.
J. H.
Really tasty food. I would highly recommend if you love a good burger!
The service was friendly but extremely slow hence the 4 stars.
b. c.
pre match burgers were amazing and they are home to my favourite starter yet, wiffle waffle yum yum fries.
E. P.
First visit and it won't be our last. Restaurant was very busy and it is noisy but food was fabulous! Lovely, friendly staff & a bit of a wait for food, but well worth it as very fresh and delicious! Recommend booking first!
T. S.
Friendly staff, yummy burgers (the chicken one with the hoisin is amazing) with great choice of sides (regular or 'dirty') and dips. Clean loos as well.
Is busy even on a Sunday evening though so you may want to pre-book or visit off-peak.
L. H.
Cool atmosphere, burger was really good and staff friendly :)
J.
The food was great, but the service really poor... As soon as we arrived we were sat on a table for 4, but we asked if we could sit in a booth, which we were explained to that they was for larger groups of 5 or 6 which was absolutely fine, until tables of 4 were continuously sat there, even when we asked again. Then drinks came about 25 mins after ordering them and starters were already finished, once the main came we were asked if that was everything and we mentioned there were some dips missing where the waitress gave a sigh to go an get them, she then literally dropped them on the table and when we asked what was what it was a roll of the eyes. There was one that was missing which we asked for and it was a sarcastic response of 'well that wasn't on the ticket?' this was then again brought over and almost slammed on the table. We then just wanted to get out and asked for the bill which took another 15 minutes to come before we then just got up to pay at the bar. Unfortunately it ruined the experience of really great food...
J. g.
Amazing burgers chicken was delicious and incredible starters could not recommend more.
J. H.
This was recommended to me via a colleague and it certainly didn't disappoint!
The restaurant is within some old tunnels/basement and has a great atmosphere. It can be noisy but depends on how's busy it is.
The menu is great if you like burgers and classic American fare, all very tasty with generous portions.
The staff were all very welcoming and helpful, would recommend!
E. O.
Amazing service, Bethlyn was lovely and didn't catch the name of the male waiter who served us but friendly and good craic! Amazing burgers, tried everyone but the 4x4 patty and all are bloody amazing! Really quick with getting order to table on a busy day too!
M. E.
Best burgers in Newcastle, highly recommended.
A. H.
Fantastic place, great selection of burgers. Took us ages to decide what we wanted! The staff were friendly, checking on how our meals were and suggesting their favourites when we were stuck. There for a birthday meal and it was absolutely fantastic. For what you get, the prices are about right, and the underground setting is very atmospheric. Will definitely be coming back.
J. L.
eally expensive for a can of beer and had to wait 40 minutes for some water but ended up leaving. The 3 stars is that as the food itself is unreal, very nice and value for money... just hame about the drinks situation
T. j.
Food, staff, atmosphere were amazing - would go again! Vegetarian chicken burgers are the best we've ever had <3
S. Y.
i went with my friend which gave me a 50% discount because of his dad being friends with the owner which was great, ordered the best chips i have ever tasted with their own sauce for just £2.45. the staff were very nice and got the order just right. 5/5, bobby dazler.
L. E.
Amazing food and great friendly servers. Recommend the chicken strip starter!
N. W.
Awesome food with great gluten free and vegan options. Can i pass on a huge thank you to your staff - all of them were kind, cheerful and welcoming.
A. M.
Staff was very supportive when they saw me with a walking boot, they helped me do the stairs and were very kind. I went with my kids and they offered many different meal options for the youngest family member, always smiling. The best burger that I have had! Presented in a lovely vintage plate. The burger was sublime, good meat quality served with Mediterranean dry tomatoes...to die for. Fries were absolutely perfect not greasy at all. I really enjoyed it.
S. A.
Stopped by for a burger. Enjoyed it, a good no frills place with good food.
P. S.
Great portions. I ordered the fried chicken and it was HUGE and super tasty. Reliably great burgers and fries with really friendly service.
J. T.
Best burgers of all time ever. Massive portions with loads of delicious and original toppings. You haven’t lived until you’ve had the PB&J burger and you have to get the waffle fries as well. There’s no legal obligation or anything, but you owe it to yourself. Atmosphere is really cool as well and the staff are always really friendly. Wear baggy pants.
D. M.
Tasty burgers with unique toppings. Went for the classic "Fat hippo burger", good flavour; as a concerned-about-spicy-food kinda guy, was a very mild spice but very enjoyable. Kept the fries clean. Meal for 4 with a couple of drinks, Saturday at 4pm, good service, both speed and attitude, all came to around £60. Nice underground seating, good decor, music not too loud, thoroughly recommend.
A. S.
Went today for my son's birthday, fantastic from start to finish! Staff were friendly and welcoming, service was quick and the food was amazing!!! My son mentioned to the waiter who seated us that it was his birthday, then at the end of the meal, without being asked, his milkshake came with brownie and a candle on top! Which was a lovely touch after an already 5 star meal! Will definitely be back!
T. F.
Really tasty burgers and sides. I had the Notorious VFC burger and the special Trick vegan nuggets, both were so good! I couldn't finish it all but they kindly wrapped it up for me and I finished it later when I had more space. I haven't been a vegan very long but was super impressed with their range and the quality of the food, I'll be back! 100% would recommend.
J.
Really good veggie and vegan selection. Great Covid safety measures. Delicious food. Expect to get messy when eating a burger here
E. L.
Fantastic evening, amazing food and cheerful waiters. Always a great meal, will be back soon for more of the Halloween burgers.
B. A.
Came here Thursday night on my own after work and had the 3 course special. Deep fried gherkins melted in the mouth, beef burger was insane! dessert was off the charts. Service was amazing, genuinely nice staff all over. They clearly know how good the restaurant is. Really happy. I need this guys down in Solihull please. Manager was a nice guy.
R. W.
I first came here about a year ago and loved it so thought I would bring my dad the next time he was absolutely blown away! We both had the PB and Double J and he said it was the best burger he’d ever had in his life! He loved it so much he wanted to have it two days in a row and now he’s trying to recreate it for himself at home! Absolutely amazing food, quick service and lovely staff - if we could give them 6 stars we would
P. M.
Spot on, good gluten free choice.
j. k.
I had an absolutely fantastic meal here tonight. A friend had recommended this establishment to me so I thought I’d give it a go. The food was great and the service was top notch. I was served by two young members of staff, a blonde male and a female with dark brown hair. Both were very polite and made us feel very welcome. I will definitely be returning in the near future :) keep up the good work!
F. M.
Only been here once but the food was amazing as was the variety. I would personally class it as a Americanburger joint type establishment although they do alot more than just burgers vibe is really nice and chill down there and the staff were lovely and helpfully in helping us make are decisions. The kids menu was pretty epic too. I don't recall the exact burger I had, but it was amazing as was the chunky chips and slaw and there was also loads of sauces too choose from which was a nice little added bonus with your meal. Would 100% recommend this place and will definitely eat there again
F. J.
We took a group of 20 people there and had excellent service.
The waiter was fun and cheerful and we were served quickly.
Food was excellent quality and very hot.
The restaurant is fun and Vibey, the only downside is the lack of Windows and natural light because of being underground.
It just made me feel extremely claustrophobic. This was the only thing that stopped it from being 5 stars
S. W.
Good burger and chips, can't fault it.
N. B.
Really nice, have been many times, my personal favourite is the hangover III. Really messy to eat but worth it, worthwhile taking wipes as napkins wont always do the job with the sticker sauces. Unique venue and would definitely recommend.
d. k.
Great burger 🍔 spot on service's I don't go out much but this was a good night and the shakes are so so good 🥳
S. B.
Hidden underground, the Fat Hippo has a vast menu of different types of burgers and they cater for vegetarians and vegans too!
We ordered; the Great White Buffalo Burger, The American Burger, both Dirty Waffle Fries and Regular Fries, a Mars Attack Milkshake and a Strawberry Milkshake - wow!!
We would go back in a heartbeat and leave with a heart attack with the amount of food we would eat! The only drawback was the shame we felt not finishing every last mouthful...
So, if you ever fancy going here, make sure you go on an empty stomach.
G.
Not a big fan of the basement venue with no natural light. BUT the burgers are amazingly yummy. I went for the Fat Hippo and it is one of the best burgers I have had. I do prefer their lunch menu though which offers burgers with one beef patty instead of two - I think this creates a better burger:bun ratio for maximum taste.
B. F.
First visit and was impressed with theme and decor etc..ordered the stinky pete and a candyfloss slush cocktail....bit shocked when this 6.90 cocktail came in a small metal cup!! Wasnt massively tasty either and then my burger was full of gristle bits so was left disappointed when paying 11.90 for that...sorry but just was not worth the money!!!
M. W.
Lovely restaurant with a selection of unique and tasty burgers - Tropic Thunder was excellent! Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.
C. B.
This place does some pretty decent burgers. They do a decent lunch menu with burgers and chips for like a fiver which is decent, and you can switch out the chips for sweet potatoe fries. My favourite burger is the peanut butter one which may sound rank but it's actually top tier.
Side note, don't go here with someone you don't really want to talk to, there's no phone signal or 4g.
Shakes are pretty good too.
R. F.
Food: Absolutely delicious, I'm serious when I say that they serve the BEST burgers I've ever tasted.
Staff: Brilliant, very friendly and helpful.
Also flexible (as I have some food issues)
That they were happy to accommodate.
I'll definitely return for more good food.
J. T.
Unbelievably good burgers. Table staff really friendly and helpful as well. Can't fault
T. W.
Great atmosphere, the setting and decor are brilliant. Expect to wait for a table. We were a group of 8 and when our waiter came to our table I never heard him state that all burgers come red in the middle unless requested well done etc.
My burger tasted nice but I found eating red meat in the centre very challenging.
J. F. G.
First meal out in town since lockdown. Sensible process which didn't impact our enjoyment/comfort. Service was excellent, and the food was delicious as ever. We live near a site the fleet often visits, love to see the wachos on the fleet menu!
C. H.
The burgers are always consistently good, the shakes are fantastic and the seasonal special always looks interesting. Just a shame those specials are never gluten free, I don't like having the same thing every time I visit a restaurant.
C. L.
You want a good atmosphere, this delivers. You want the scene, it gotchu. You want unforgettable food, well, I think you know what I'm gonna say.
As a self acclaimed consoeur of burgers (having traversed many burger chains throughout Newcastle), I can confirm that this place delivers, perhaps more than any I have been to so far.
Perfectly seasoned pattys, well balanced flavours and beautifully presented, the meals were loved by me and my fellow companions. Your staff are welcoming, friendly and attentive, and prices, whilst more dear than most burger-joints, certainly have good justification to be as they are.
Well done Fat Hippo, you have my praise.
D. L.
My partner and I visited for the first time today. I had the Halloween special burger and I was very impressed. The food is very tasty! We will definitely return.
R.
The food was nice but it seems to defeat the point of Eat Out to Help Out if you remove the lunch deal from the menu without saying anything to customers on arrival (it wasn’t even crossed off). The scheme is supposed to entice people in to restaurants and save them money. I felt embarrassed when I ordered the lunch deal and was told I couldn’t have it because they’d be giving it away ‘for free’ - completely missing the point of the scheme when the restaurant gets 100% of the bill anyway. I would have preferred to have known this beforehand to avoid the embarrassment and go somewhere where I’d actually be saving money! I ended up paying the same as I usually do because I was forced to buy a bigger meal.
L. P.
Amazing burgers and very friendly staff. 5 stars all round.
G. K.
Nice burgers and cozy underground interior.
D. D.
Great staff and excellent food. I'm come here often and absolutely love it. Great for dietary requirements too.
H. P.
Literally the best scran I’ve ever had, class customer service. Get yourself down!
J. J.
Incredible burgers. Being a burger lover I did my research and this place came up. In London we have an amazing selection and let's be honest but Burger & Beyond is the undisputed King of Burgers however this place comes very close. A really unique selection of burgers. The loaded fries are out of this world and the starters are moorish and addictive. If I find myself back in Newcastle again this is where I'm going.
D. C.
The fat hippo is great. It is one of the best burger places in Newcastle. I have tried almost all of the burgers and have enjoyed every single one. The vegan and vegetarian options are incredible. As the actual restaurant is underground be wary that you will likely have no signal.
D. H.
Really good burgers, great atmosphere, friendly staff. What more do you want?
C. D.
Oh wow! I mean these burgers are just incredible! Huge portions and so delicious. I thought I'd had "THE" best burger ever, until I can here! This honestly is second to none!! I would come back again and again! The Turk Burglar Christmas burger was insane!!! Can't wait to visit again!!!
S. C.
Chose this restaurant on a whim during a road trip, and I'm so glad we did! Amazing experience. Staff were all superb and the food was unreal. Hopefully they decide to open a Fat Hippo near Manchester!
S. C.
The mouth watering burgers you usually dream of eating after watching US food vlogs on you tube, that’s the one! The best juicy burger I ever had in uk 🇬🇧 with freedom helles, friendly staff, nice underground atmosphere, great experience 👍🏻
S. U.
My food was delicious however my friends food was too hard to cut so she asked for another one was perfectly fine and the staff member apologised. And someone who arrived after us got their food before our food arrived so we had to ask a member of staff where our food is but overall we all had a great time but we would have liked to have our food to arrive first. We will be coming here again though.
J. S.
The food here is delicious! Delicious burgers and a really fun vibe. Went here on a group meal and had a great time. If you're getting a starter I reccomend the cheese balls, they were so good!
V. Á. P.
Great chicken! Will be coming back for an MI:5
B. S.
The most amazing burgers in Newcastle!
Happily recommend.
S. L.
Always great burgers, and good service to go with it.
Nice selection of local beers (Allendale and Anarchy) too, which are well worth a try - a great pairing with the burgers.
E. W.
Best vegan burger around, plus excellent staff and a nice atmosphere.
N. M.
First time there food was lovely and staff very friendly. X
C. V.
I really like it here and have for a while, however they have changed their vegan/veggie selection. Like most restaurants this is just all vegan and in my opinion the fake meat tastes almost grisly? Which is a shame because I came here before and they had much better options for both veggies who like cheese and vegans.
S. J.
Just awesome. Food is utterly fantastic, surroundings are cosy and the staff very polite. If you love burgers I can't think of anywhere better.
I. F.
They may of been having a bad day but I can't say it's the best burger I have ever had. I had the texan burger and found the onion rings very greasy, the burger not much better then a well known fast food chain. The dirty chips very nice.
Still giving 3 stars as the staff were very welcoming and the atmosphere was buzzing.
S. O.
Burgers and chicken were lush. Staff were great. But when I ordered a Blonde Star ale for £4.90 and I got a 330ml can, I wasn't so impressed.
A. N.
Always great food and service at fat hippo! Try the deep fried gherkins and 'Freddy's Fingers' (Southern fried chicken strips), with Buffalo hot sauce, to start! Delicious. The 'Stinky Pete' and 'Wild Bill' burgers are particular favourites of mine. They have a good selection of beers to choose from including their own 'Fat Hippo Hillbilly' brewed locally in Allendale! The underground restaurant has a good vibe and there's usually a great atmosphere.
R. C.
Burgers are good, but a bit over the top, and a little too greasy for my tastes. I'm in the minority, most people love them.
Thought I was going to pass out the restaurant was so warm, had to go outside a few time's during the meal to cool off.
H. B. S.
Super tasty burgers. Caters for all dietary choices. The prices are middle of the road but the drinks are expensive but they are all independent craft beers. Peanut butter and jelly burger is mental but i would recommend sharing it with someone as im not a small bloke and i couldn't finish it, it is very rich.
R. H.
Superb experience, from the quirky decor to the food. The burgers were very well cooked with a nice red centre and the hippo sauce was incredible! Hippo IPA was a good accompaniment as well. Very much recommend coming here!
P.
This little hidden gem is a must visit. The food, staff and atmosphere are all amazing
n. l.
The best burger place I've been to. Burgers are outstanding, staff are super friendly. Just wish they opened one on the west side of the country! Literally my favourite place to eat of all time!
H. J.
First visit here. Great food and fast service. Excellent menu with plenty of choice. Will definitely visit again!
A. R.
Exceptional. Really friendly team, from welcome to service and on leaving. Food very, very good indeed. They have a decent GF menu, as well as kids specials. Decent value. Beer lovely. What more could you want? Easy recommendation to make.
S.
"best burger I've ever eaten" quote from my fianceè and I wouldn't disagree. Wasn't even time to get a photo of the food before we wolfed it all down. Great atmosphere to go with it too
E. F.
A fab burger, PB and 2J, also good beers from Allan Dale brewery, NB no draft, bottles and cans only. Only complaint, chips a bit cold. Friendly staff, good atmosphere.
K. S.
It does feel claustrophobic going downstairs into a dark dingy rustic restaurant. The food was served promptly and so was the payment. However compared to the Durham branxe, the food didn't seem as overwhelming. I can't describe it but the food didn't seem to have as much passion as Durham branch, my friends also agree.
Other than that it's your typical Fat Hippo.
M.
Great burgers. Unfortunately the member of staff who took our order proceeded to go home without giving it to the kitchen so we were waiting for 45 mins before the penny dropped and someone came to sort us out. Very generously gave us plenty of free drinks by way of an apology and put our food to the front of the queue.
H. H.
Best burgers in town, plus plenty of delicious plant based and GF options.
M. M.
Best burger I have ever had! So much choice, I went for the fat hippo burger and loaded fries and both were absolutely delicious. Portion sizes are generous, I was stuffed afterwards.
B.
Great Burgers. Funky underground environment. Good service. Not too expensive either.
K. G.
Great food everything from the burgers to the sides are absolutely delicious. The only aspect which might be a turn off is the price but trust me it is worth it.
A. W.
Some fantastic burgers here, however in the past the chicken burgers were in breadcrumbs but for some reason have changed to just being fried like KFC wasn't as good at all as the breaded chicken previously.
On a good note there is some great beef burgers on offer with the burgers selection being quite ranged from sweet to huge there something for everyone *vegetarian options are available
All beef burgers are cooked medium rare so little pink inside but still delicious
When it's busy it does seem service starts to slow down
S.
I absolutely love it here! I just can get enough of the burgers! The dirty fries are definitely worth ordering too. Staff are always great and we get served fairly quickly every time.
B. M.
By far the nicest burgers in the country simply amazing. Nice little underground burger place the food is phenomenonal 4x4 with dirty fries just wow.
A. S.
3 Stars and only because of the Quayside market stall. This place sucks. The waitresses need to learn to listen and adopt a few manners as well.
I'm 24, I don't particularly look young and never get checked for ID. I didn't get checked but I was made uncomfortable. Me and my partner head in here when it opens one Saturday, it's not that busy but it still took 15 minutes for us to be asked if we want drinks. This is when the problem started. I didn't have a drinks menu and wanted to check out their alcohol selection. I asked the waitress what drinks they have and what pints they have. I'm northern and this is a simple question, what I mean is tell me what beer you have bottled and on tap. I'm accustomed to asking this way and have no issues anywhere, not even dat bar where some of the waitresses aren't native to England. She looked me straight in the eye and said "We have pop and water in pint and coca cola in bottles". I was quite taken back by this, like I said I don't look young and never get questioned for ID so they felt like an insult. It wasn't but it felt like it. I then proceeded to correct her and say "Alcoholic drinks sorry, I should have explained further but I am northern" this was just to lighten my own mood and she looked confused at me asking for an alcohol menu. My partner then asked in a different way as I was stunned she hadn't got it yet. Again she looked at my partner who definitely doesn't look young in shock. Without explaining she walks away and a different server comes over. I ask this server for the same thing in the same phrase "what drinks do you have and what pints" He replies with all sorts of beers and ales and bottled drinks. It took 30 minutes to get a drink and a further 30 for food. The food was disappointing and I will not be going back. The hygiene in the toilets were abysmal and have not been cleaned for sometime. Like I said 3 stars for the food stall on the Quayside, those boys make the burgers tastier and faster. Would recommend them. Every Sunday on the Quayside.
R. T.
Fancy a burger? Come here! Hidden away in an underground bunker, the Fat Hippo offers burgers that aren't rivaled by the most expensive restaurants, and they still come at a great price. The burgers here are a little pink in the middle, but this seems to make them even tastier. You should definitely pop in on your break.
R. H.
Most incredible burger we've ever tasted. A super indulgent treat at great prices.
I. T.
Good menu selection, fast service, food was very good, will definitely return someday
P. W.
Hands down the best Burgers in Newcastle! There's a really broad choice (with some quirky options such as the PB&J Burger) and the sides and drinks are really good too.
As a regular it's great that the staff seem to recognise and remember me whenever I come in, and there's now a loyalty club called the Herd which gives you access to additional menu options and other perks.
The interior of the restaurant itself really highlights the "Underground" theme and could hardly be considered 'plush', but when the Burgers are this good that's merely a footnote!
A. H.
Eaten here a few times and it's always been delicious. The dirty fries were definitely my favourite. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to come back and try something new
M. J.
Highly recommend these guys if you are looking for premium gourmet burgers.
Well worth a visit.
Great selection of food and drinks.
And if you are concerned about prices, go during their happy hour 😉
Oh and if you are looking for a view from the restaurant, well you are out of luck really as it underground.
D. M.
Quite often, restaurants at lunch can be a bit hit or miss. The Fat Hippo was definitely a hit. Great burgers, great service. Fast and efficient.
The 4x4 is something to behold and not for the faint hearted, or for those that sleep easy on a full stomach.
Best burgers in Newcastle? Could be. I'll definitely be back, just maybe for a little less meat.
I. “. H.
Great food , made fresh to order. I would definetly suggest the Fricks 'n' Dips if you like deep fried pickles ;P also a good selection of beers available (only as 330ml cans , none on tap :()
P. K.
On the whole I really love Fat Hippo. It's the cheapest and nicest place to get a burger in Newcastle. However I have had a few bad experiences where food has come out cold or very late. Staff always very apologetic when things go wrong. Expect a fair wait during busy times as the restaurant is quite small inside.
A. B.
First time we've been fantastic food and really friendly staff deffo go again
J. M.
One of the best burgers in Newcastle!! The van is just as good.
P. H.
On a Sunday afternoon we arrived at the restaurant and although it didn't appear to be too busy it took a while for the meal to be served and we got 3 of the 4 meals and had to wait longer for the 4th. The chips with these 3 meals were cold but they were hot with the 4th meal (my wife's) when it finally arrived. Yes we should have sent the cold chips back but we were hungry and didn't want to risk the warmish burgers getting any cooler.
The cost of the four meals with drinks was okay and overall the food was acceptable, but nothing to write home about. As we are only visitors to Newcastle we would probably choose to eat somewhere else rather than eating at the Fat Hippo Underground again.
M. D.
One of my favourite places when I visit back home. Great food, friendly staff, I usually can't wait to go back! Visit when you're hungry and go all in - the starters and sides are worth it alone!
S. K.
The burgers were amazing. Jordan was really helpful with recommendations, great experience overall.
L. A.
Tasty burgers and beverages to wash down your tasty burger
D. S.
Food was a little cold, I’ve had better burgers. I went with my Vegan friend and they loved the menu and vegan options.
G. H.
Very quick and good service. Great food and drinks too!
S. S.
We collected our burgers earlier this evening and I'll definitely come back soon - the food was ready on time and so so tasty. What a treat
J. B.
I absolutely adore the food here and would highly recommend you book a table in advance as I have previously been disappointed and slightly heartbroken to find the place is fully booked. The portions for me are quite large, but I always challenge myself to finish the whole meal. The staff here are very friendly and helpful and I would recommend this place to anyone with a healthy appetite who enjoys burgers and for them to try the dirty fries.
S. H.
I'd have taken the customary photo of the food but I'm afraid I was too busy eating it, great burgers really really good. Can't recommend it enough 👍
B. M.
This is me and my partners new favourite spot! He introduced it to me about a month ago and being a pescatarian, i loved the burgers they had (Bloody Harrelson was amazing!) and the portions are massive!
The prices are good for the quantity. And the quality is fantastic! And amazing service, friendly and covid secure!
P. S.
Really good food, cheerful staff
N. T.
Fantastic building, located underground it what looks like old liquor vaults. Food is very tasty with various selection of burgers. Real ales and their own brews also. Defo recommend
S. N.
Staff were good, well organised even in a pandemic and food was nice, portions weren't very big, but tasty. Bit disappointing to have to pay for your sauces though.
M. H.
Lovely burgers, always cooked perfectly!
10/10!
Free WiFi available as it's underground you won't get a mobile phone signal!
D. C.
The fat hippo is great. It is one of the best burger places in Newcastle. I have tried almost all of the burgers and have enjoyed every single one. The vegan and vegetarian options are incredible. As the actual restaurant is underground be wary that you will likely have no signal.
A. N.
Always great food and service at fat hippo! Try the deep fried gherkins and 'Freddy's Fingers' (Southern fried chicken strips), with Buffalo hot sauce, to start! Delicious. The 'Stinky Pete' and 'Wild Bill' burgers are particular favourites …
D. S.
Food was a little cold, I’ve had better burgers. I went with my Vegan friend and they loved the menu and vegan options.
k. l.
Food and service was brilliant
S. U.
My food was delicious however my friends food was too hard to cut so she asked for another one was perfectly fine and the staff member apologised. And someone who arrived after us got their food before our food arrived so we had to ask a …
K.
Always amazing food
S. N.
Staff were good, well organised even in a pandemic and food was nice, portions weren't very big, but tasty. Bit disappointing to have to pay for your sauces though.
B. M.
This is me and my partners new favourite spot! He introduced it to me about a month ago and being a pescatarian, i loved the burgers they had (Bloody Harrelson was amazing!) and the portions are massive! …
L. S.
Succulent beef burgers the best
C. B.
This place does some pretty decent burgers. They do a decent lunch menu with burgers and chips for like a fiver which is decent, and you can switch out the chips for sweet potatoe fries. My favourite burger is the peanut butter one which …
P. R.
Great burgers, great food, loved the beer!
C. P.
Great food, a little dissapointed that chicken burgers and onion rings were off the menu, however what we ordered was delicious, Buba Gump burger with dirty fries, and a Stinky Pete burger with fries, absolutley gorgeous
S. L.
Great food, great atmosphere and friendly staff
C. D.
Very tasty burgers. We all enjoyed them. The Stinky Peat was a triumph.
G. M.
Have been a number of times & been very impressed but was disappointed at our last visit, while burgers are generally stated to be medium this time it was rare and overly greasy not enjoyable. Cute surroundings remain but won't rush to recommend it again.
J. G.
Had the little bill, can't beat it for £6! Shake was dear at £4.25 but tasty
S. D.
Best burgers in Newcastle for me. Their PB&Double J burger is the best burger I've had. Love the Cajun skinny fries as well.
C. G.
Me and my partner tried the vegan burgers. So yummy 🤤. Great place to go and service was great. Fried and tested! Yuuuum 👍
P. B.
The best burger & fries in Newcastle. Lovely staff, quick service, great portions. First rate
P. W.
Burger was good. Chicken was good. But the beer was poor, as was the ice cream (tasteless, gummy), and the coffee. My espresso was like a tiny watery americano. Couldnt drink it.
A. B.
Cool underground bar/ burger joint, serving some brilliantly messy burgers full of flavour. Absolutely recommend this spot (and other Fat Hippos in the area) for a great burger and fries in a relaxed, friendly and cool atmosphere.
N. G.
Fantastic food and a wonderful venue for catching up with friends and family. The burgers are absolutely amazing and the atmosphere is great too - very friendly and helpful staff as well!
H. G.
This place does the best vegan burgers I've ever had, period! I love it here and the atmosphere is really cool too, must visit for vegans
C. B.
I have never had a bad burger here. The fat hippo sauce is delicious and the alcoholic slushies are to die for. Fat hippo is by far one of my favourite places to get a burger and I will pick it over bigger chains anyday
A. S.
Burgers are the best I've had, better than 5guys(which I am a big fan of) great shakes, lovely service and great space.
Will definitely be back!
Q. V.
Fantastic burgers and sides. Something for the adventurous or great quality well executed American style burgers for those with a craving. Plus fried pickles!!! Yes!
A. J.
If you want to be a fat hippo, head to fat hippo! I can eat like a horse, but man I was stuffed! It was national burger day when I went here so it was rammed and I did have to wait for a table but the staff were very friendly and I had a beer at the bar (craft beers from local Allendale Brewery)! The was a little while before our burgers arrived but it was well worth the wait! There juicy, messy and full of flavour. Can't complain one bit!
G. L.
Lush food, obviously burgers.
Small quirky little venue. Prices reasonable but not cheap. Well worth it for the burgers tho.
Decent, and better than expected choice of local ales and IPAs and the like
J. T.
Fantastic burgers!
M. P.
Great burgers, very filling and not badly priced.
C. B.
Love this place, it was the first place me and my boyfriend went on a date. Fantastic burgers and lovely atmosphere, handy for pre-theatre food too!
A. M. B. A.
A nice place , with good burger options and nice staff
D. L.
Called in for lunch special, burger n chips for a fiver. Great value n burger was very nice. The onion rings were slightly greasy but still scrumptious.
J. B.
Superb burgers, lovely friendly staff and quick service. Perfect! 👌
A. S.
Fantastic burgers at very reasonable prices for what you get. Streets ahead of places like Byron's and Five Guys (think Burger King but twice the price). The premises are... interesting.
M. I.
Good food at reasonable prices
P. M.
Amazing burgers and sides. The staff were great. Even relocated us when we were next to a noisy group. Nothing wrong with the noisy group but we wanted to talk 😁
J. D.
Cracking burger for a decent price....
D. N.
Been here 3 times, got a different burger each time and all 3 have been faultless. I like my burgers, far hippo hits the spot every time! Staff are also really friendly!
E. T.
Best burger we’ve had in a long time , staff were really helpful and friendly. A lovely place to eat will definitely be coming back 👍*****
D. E.
Awesome burger with some great hand cut chips to boot. Service was immediate and brilliant. Will be back for sure next time I'm in Newcastle!
O. M.
First time visiting! Very generous potions, and attentive staff. Will definitely come back!
G. S. (.
You get what you pay for. This place is a perfect example of that. Food is expensive (relatively speaking) but it is a fantastic experience. You won't be leaving hungry. I can eat a lot and I struggled with the dessert.
S. G.
First time there, got seated no problem, good music in the background, and probably the best burger I've ever had, would definitely recommend to people
m. D.
Really nice burgers make sure you book
P. t.
Awesome place, very friendly staff, would definitely go back again
G. H.
Fantastic food every time we go. The staff are very friendly, attentive and considerate. The rewards system is great as well, so be sure to join the Herd!
H.
The food was less good than in Jesmond and I find the acoustics uncomfortable (it's underground and echoey).
Staff were friendly, service was quick.
T. C.
Used to love visiting the Fat Hippo, now not so much. The menu is a lot smaller, the quality of the food has declined and they stopped making their Mac and Cheese balls which was one of our reasons for visiting.
P. A.
Cracking burgers 👍...felt a bit cheated with fajita fries.....just sprinkled a bit dust on 🙄
S. H.
The best burgers in town! Novel underground setting, made to look like (or may be) old underground tunnels. Rustic tables and seating, great service.
H. D.
Nothing will quite beat two staff members trying to explain to me that peanut butter definitely had milk in because IT'S CALLED BUTTER without checking.
(I capitulated fast and the meal was lovely but also 😂)
T. D.
Great food man! It was cushty and lush, I loved me vegan burger. The workers are mint and canny and the place is underground man!! It's bloody wicked.
A. D.
Burger heaven! A great range of burgers and sides served be friendly efficient staff. Loved the slightly rare meat - far better than cremated!
S. T.
One of the best burgers I have ever had! Be prepared to pay that little bit extra though, it's worth it.
A. B.
Food is good, but it's way too loud and the service is quite slow
L.
For some bizarre reason they have replaced the bean burger with a soya version?! Awful and tastes like rubber. Huge mistake! Was one if my favourite places until then.
M. D.
Great burgers with a twist in flavor, all staff was courteous and available, place was cozy and warm, and the drinks were amazing!
H. A.
Loved the American burger 🍔it was so delicious 😋🤤👌🏽
D. W.
Good quality food. I had the £6 lunch deal, food tasted great, however, portions were lacking if you want to be full afterwards. Enough for a decent sized lunch.
P. J.
Food is generally decent but I felt my burger bun was really greasy on the bottom.
And one of my onion rings was made with that hard skin part of the onion
K. H.
Ate from the vegan menu, which was delicious. Portions were generous and the quality was excellent.
J. C.
We came here a lot when we lived here and love it. Now we live in Manchester, we always make sure we visit on our trips back to the toon. Great food, good atmosphere and nice staff.
D. T.
The Notorious VFC 2.0 was one of the best burgers I've had in quite a while.
T. B.
Another lovely meal. Though the place was quite full and noisy. Staff kindly moved us to a quieter section.
N. W.
Fantastic burgers, desserts are pretty average and non descript. No idea why you have to wait so long to get your meal when the place is empty...
J. D.
Best burger in Newcastle without a doubt. Amazing food, very unique setting, also great for allergies, several menus available.
L. O.
Great place to eat, food amazing and good table service.
S.
Great place to go if you like burgers.
S. B.
Always good. The nachos starter was unreal and my burger was yummy. The waitress was really friendly.
A. H.
Really good food, you don't need starters and the place itself is lovely
A. C.
Click and collect during Covid. Quick and easy process. Really nice burger and Wachos. Reasonable priced.
m. r.
Banging gluten free burger and chips , the Toblerone cheesecake was amazing too .
Highly recommend this place .
P. G.
The food was delicious glad I was able to go! The desserts looked lovely and the waffle with ice cream that I had was delish.
M. B.
Quirky venue, great food - could have been a little hotter - excellent prices and the wine was good too! Great find. Recommend for sure.
L. M.
Great service and lots of food.
Thourghly enjoyed it 👍👍👍
M. S.
Ok when its 50% off. Burgers were ok but nothing special. Get a torch out to read the menu though it's so dark!
M. R.
Good Hamburger place that caters to every need! Multiple choices of good Burgers and incluces vegetarian and vegan options too.
P. H.
Always good food! Really helpful staff, handy location and lovely food make for a really nice restaurant. Best to book, especially in busy periods.
R. A. D. C.
Best. what can I say more? The burger is so good, really juicy. However one single flaw as it is in the underground level, no signal for mobile phones
H. A. S.
Lunch menu and price is excellent quality and value.
L. S.
This is an awesome burger place. The toppings are varied and delicious and the burgers cooked to perfection. The dirty fries are a must!
D. G.
Amazing diverse burgers on offer here in alongside a great atmosphere. Friendly staff and the range of burgers here really make this place a must go.
r. m.
I've been to the fat hippo several times and the burgers are consistently excellent. They also make fantastic triple fried chips, mac and cheese balls and dirty fries.
H.
The food was less good than in Jesmond and I find the acoustics uncomfortable (it's underground and echoey).
Staff were friendly, service was quick.
A. S.
Fantastic burgers at very reasonable prices for what you get. Streets ahead of places like Byron's and Five Guys (think Burger King but twice the price). The premises are... interesting.
M. R.
One of the better burger restaurants that have proliferated in recent times. Descend into the basement for 'dirty' fries, brioche bun burgers, shakes and the ubiquitous 'slaw. High calorie, low concept. Essentially food for children but aimed at young adults.
D. S.
Truely decadent comfort food. Highly recommend. 5 *****
P. M.
Amazing burgers and sides. The staff were great. Even relocated us when we were next to a noisy group. Nothing wrong with the noisy group but we wanted to talk 😁
I. “. H.
Great food , made fresh to order. I would definetly suggest the Fricks 'n' Dips if you like deep fried pickles ;P also a good selection of beers available (only as 330ml cans , none on tap :()
D. F.
Fantastic burgers. Great staff and atmosphere what's not to like?
A. D.
Burger heaven! A great range of burgers and sides served be friendly efficient staff. Loved the slightly rare meat - far better than cremated!

I love the peanut butter jelly burger!!!! Also enjoy their dirty fries and the amazing shakes <3
C. H.
Big burgers. Went there twice. The waitress forgot my mac n cheese balls the second. She said sorry but i didn't believe her.
P. C.
Nice burgers, decent portions, reasonable prices, a little cold in the basement eating area though.
m. v.

Hands down the best burgers in the North East. PB & J burger is unreal.. I know it sounds odd, but try it. Trust me.

R. B.
Good food but be warned there is a lot of it which is blooming lovely. Hot jalapenos certainly add a bit of interest
D. M.
Delightful burger but beers only sold in very expensive small cans. Not ideal to wash food down with unless of course you buy another.
C. L.
First time iv been spot on food and atmosphere
K. L.
Service and food 5* love it here, went today served by Penny who was great, told all covid guidelines on entry
J. H.
This place never fails to deliver, a bit pricey but definitely worth it. If you're feeling a cheat day, this is one hell of a cheat day. Definitely recommended!
