Reviews of Kaltur Wine Bar & Restaurant High Bridge
Y. W.
Nice food but not so amazing given the price&portion - taste 4 stars
The waitress wasn’t that friendly.
A. S.
Kaltur began their corporate lives as importers of authentic Spanish products to the UK restaurant and home foodie market and recently they’ve branched out into cooking and serving Spanish cuisine in High Bridge Street in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK.
I’d first read about Kaltur over at Secret Diner, which is a guide to the eateries of the North East of England. As I was due to be in the region for a couple of days in early July I thought I’d give it a try. It being a Thursday evening I didn’t book in advance but was warned by one of my fellow diners that without a reservation we were unlikely to get a table, Newcastle being party central any night of the week. A phone call two minutes later confirmed that they were full, save for three places ‘at the bar’. Well that seemed a shame but we decided it would do as we had no plan B and were feeling ready to eat.
In the event I could not have been happier, if they given us the best table in the house. The restaurant is tiny and these three seats ‘at the bar’, which is really ‘the pass’, gave us a commanding view of the entire place out of the corner of one eye as well as a bird’s eye view of the kitchen and the opportunity to interact with the two chefs who worked in the smallest space imaginable to produce an array of mouthwatering tapas dishes for us to try.
Sometimes you can ascertain whether or not restaurant staff can be trusted, at first sight. In this case all of the guys here, including the off duty waiter who’d called in with his grandfather to have a glass of wine gave us such a warm and friendly welcome that they immediately won our confidence. The menu is extensive and consists of lots of interesting tapas/rationes sized dishes and few main courses. We couldn’t decide what to choose so suggested to the chef that he simply keep passing us little dishes from his side of the ‘bar’ to ours until we tell him to stop.
We ordered a bottle of wine (recommended by the young off-duty guy mentioned earlier) and then battle commenced with a couple of servings of Jamon Iberico Guijelo carved from the leg which was positioned just in front of me at the bar. It was all I could do to stop myself hacking off the occasional slice as the meal progressed. Rosy salty/sweet meat with a delicate aroma typical of the hams from this colder region of Spain and with the taste of the acorns on which the little piggy had dined before sacrificing itself for my pleasure.
This was one of those occasions when it was very easy to simply dive in and start eating whilst forgetting to take a photograph or two to hare with readers. I did manage a few though.
So in summary, this little place goes right to the top of my list of places to eat when I’m in the area. It’s fun, serves great dishes, has a great attitude to food and is very reasonably priced.

This was a nice venue for date night. The food was nice and having each dish come out as it’s ready made it easy to appreciate each item. The cheese board was a highlight, definitely worth it and more than enough cheese for 2 people. However, I can’t recommend it for a *first* date as the place is quite small/noisy, so you wouldn’t be able to hear each other well, lol. It has a great atmosphere though and felt very cozy. The service could have been better, we had to flag down waiter each time we wanted to order a drink or ask for water, and there was a miscommunication with the kitchen about the availability of a dish (which was kindly rectified on the bill, anyways). Nice wine list. I would take a friend visiting here and I would come again.

Spanish tapas with a twist. Overall very good food, my compliments to the chef. Lights were a bit too dim for our taste. Prices too high for the small amounts served.

Very nice food. 3-4 plates between two people is more than enough. We went for 5 plates and could only manage half on each. Really nice ambience as well. Would definitely go back.

WHAT A GEM OF A PLACE. So we came by on a warm weekday afternoon so it was pretty empty, but the service was exemplary - could truly tell that the waiter was passionate about the restaurant food by the way he described the off-menu dishes (even showed us pictures wow).
Then came the iberico ham pictured in the images attached which changed my life. Really amazing portion for just £11 too.
Would highly recommend the grilled pork for its intense flavors, the tiger prawns and cod if you like flaky fish textures, as well as the fried squid if you want something of an upgraded calamari.
We were too full to stick around for desserts, but I’ll be back for sure! ✨

Kaltur is a really good Spanish restaurant. The best one in Newcastle. Food has an excellent quality although portions are a bit small. You need to order at least two dishes per person which at the end is a little bit expensive. But as said before, quality is excellent and it is a place I would definitely recommend.

Great staff, amazing food and friendly atmospher. My favorites were fried potatoes with jamon and egg & boiled octopus with potatoes. Wine selection, olive oil and espresso were amazing too.

Finally a lovely and true Spanish restaurant ran by Spanish people. Really good quality product that change when they finish them. They try to have a new menu every week depending on the products they receive from Spain. The service was perfect!!

Full disclosure first of all: I was recommended this restaurant by my nephew who used to work with the chef. He told me he was one of the finest chef's he'd worked under so how can you not follow up on that.
The High Bridge restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and compact and we ended up being perched at what may have used to be the kitchen hatch. I'm not going to lie, when we saw it I was a little bit wary that we'd been shoehorned in to the only space they had but it turned out to make the meal so much better (which is a feat in itself - see below) as we got to see how the kitchen worked and got our food handed to us literally fresh off the stove by the chef. Anyway, enough about the restaurant.....
Most tapas places you go to have miniscule portions. It's a case of "We recommend 12- 15 dishes each to fill up a mouse" so I usually go heavy on the bread. This is not needed at Kaltur. We ordered 5 dishes in addition to the bread (Patatas Bravas, Iberico pork cheek with smooth spicy cinnamon sauce and crispy fried potato, Huevos rotos with black pudding and.... some other things I can't remember but are in the photo below) and we were honestly stuffed after the fourth dish. It was a battle to eat the pork cheek but I'm always willing to take one for the team. And so much so I had a cake with my coffee afterwards.
The standard of food was honestly amazing. Because we could talk face to face with the chef he was probably bored from hearing me gush over his cooking for 2 hours. I refuse to use the phrase "melt in your mouth" but the pork cheek..... well, I'll leave it there. And the Huevos rotos is a must for anyone who likes black pudding.
The whole meal was £90 for 2 - including a bottle of wine - which, admittedly, is pricier than your average high street chain tapas restaurant but it was completely worth it. My partner is still raving about it 5 days later. Believe my review, believe my partner, believe my nephew and believe the high score on here - Kaltur is a must in Newcastle

We had our company Christmas dinner there and it was just spectacular all around. Very centrally located venue; warm & intimate space. Friendly efficient service. Excellent food and lovely wine. Look forward to returning soon!

My wife and I have been to both Kaltur restaurants and each time we have really enjoyed what is as near an authentic Spanish experience as you can get in Newcastle. Someone complained about dishes coming out at different times, well that is what you would get in Spain. Some of the food we have tried was not really to our liking but we were trying items we would not normally choose. The food prices are very reasonable with larger portions than you get in other tapas restaurants in the area. I do have one complaint and that is the wine prices which is one of my pet grumbles wherever we eat.The mark up for simply allowing you the use of a couple wine glasses is ridiculous. A bottle of wine you can buy from them at £17 is £32 on the table in the restaurant. To get that extra star they need to charge less for the wine and we would probably eat and drink more!

I am Spanish and I usually skip any Spanish restaurant outside my country. I jumped in to this because I wasn't aware and was really lucky.
I ordered a "tosta" and a main dish (pork) from the week menu and both were incredible.
A. S.
Best Spanish food I've had in the UK. Service is attentive and friendly, and the food beautifully presented.
R. F.
Extremely good tapas bar with great food too. Worth a visit any day. Very authentic
P. G.
Excellent food. Drink service atmosphere
A. W.
Lovely place, small enough to have a delightful atmosphere.
The waiting staff did an excellent job accommodating for my friend who had a disability requiring them to be near to the loos.
When the food came (N.B. not all at once-- because it is a tapas place, so you shouldn't expect it to) the quality was unbelievable, incredibly tasty.
Every menu had a vegetarian option to choose.
Can't wait to go back for more.

Always wonderful food and service. There is a gent who works there and his memory is first class. He is always on hand to recommend a wine and remember what we had last time. Always a great experience.

Fantastic in every way. Food and service. Lovely people lovely place. We will return. Have already been spreading the word.

Outstanding Spanish food and great atmosphere.

Authentic Spanish quisine and the best bottle of wine I've had in a restaurant for a long time.

Kaltur is fabulous. For a group of 3 we ordered 10 dishes which was probably about right for a big meal. Every dish was delicious and has us all wanting more! The dishes came as they were ready, which was great and made it really feel social.
My favourite was the Calamari, and when we went there was a fabulous cod, butter bean and mussels soup which was incredible. There’s a nice selection of Spanish wine too.
Not the cheapest place, but worth every penny! It’s quite small, which is part of the charm, but means it is worth booking.

A small and lovely cosy restaurant with great atmosphere. Delicious foods, wonderfuly prepared through open kitchen... Excellent selection of wines, good beers, and other drinks. I have to say extremely friendly and prompt customer service. A must to visit if you like Spanish cuisine. Booking definitely required on busy nights and weekends...
T. C.
Really enjoyed coming here, the tapas was delicious. The gent who served us, who I think was the owner was very friendly. We enjoyed it so much we returned for a meat and cheese charcuterie board the following afternoon. Would reccomend. Thank you
C. P.
Great authentic food, extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff, and impressive wine selection.
M. F.
Great Tapas with lovely wine. The kitchen is open and it’s a delight to see the team prepare the food.

Remind us of our travels round Spain!
This place has never failed to suprise us with the quality of food. The staff are friendly and can always recommend a good wine to match the food!
Delightful every time!
G.
Lovely little place. More concentrated on the wine rather than the tapas - I only say this as there’s a bigger wine than food menu! Had 4 dishes between 2 of us- as a meal I wish we’d had more but as like food to see you through the night drinking it was enough. High bridge street location is quite small so when full gets really loud, I’d like to try the Dean Street one just to see the different. Will be going back!
M. P.
Always love a trip to Kaltur. Great service, superb food, comfortably the best Spanish tapas in Newcastle.
P. H.
An authentic Spanish tapas restaurant with great food and friendly, helpful staff who guided us through ordering food for the first time. Small and cosy with a great atmosphere. I would recommend booking as many people were turned away on a Friday night due to its popularity. Treat yourself to a glass of Sangria or two 😁
M.
Bang average, ribs were just bone, churros tasted like calamari - and don't add a tip to the bill and make it awkward for the customer, this isn't the USA. Service was good, pay them right!
J. C.
The best Spanish restaurant at the moment, is small but have the best food.
R. J. K.
Great selection of authentic dishes. Their cava is really refreshing too!
A. R.

Lovely food overall and the atmosphere is really nice and relaxing.one of our dishes was extremely salty though. like a few other comments I have read, I agree and say portion sizes are a little on the small side, overall a nice little restaurant

Great authentic Spanish food!!!! They are also Spanish food importers. A must in Newcastle. Totally recomendable.

True tapas experience
S. W.
This is a small lovely Spanish tapas restaurant in the heart of Newcastle. I really liked a couple of dishes, patatas bravas were also very authentic. My favourite dish was the dessert - torrija, a typical bread-type pudding with natilla (vanilla-flavoured Spanish custard). Natilla tasted just like the one I had in Granada. If I may recommend something: please make more wines available by glass; also, my octopus was a bit chewy and tough, it should be melting in mouth (maybe it was overcooked). But otherwise, this is an excellent and fun place.
J. G.
Fantastic food. This is far from the anglicised version of tapas. It is creative tapas that showcases the Spanish cuisine. Beautiful flavours and a great choice of red wine.
A. P.
Intimate and authentic. Like a mini holiday in Spain, without leaving the city. Excellent food, great service, lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended, especially the seats next to the pass.

Had an amazing late lunch here this afternoon. Hidden gem, food was quality, service also fantastic. It’s close to the Bigg market but this is by far the best tapas in the town. You need to go.
D. H.
Was suggested by a friend. Ordered a few tapas dishes all which were fantastic. Enjoyed a nice bottle of cava. Really enjoyed the overall experience would definetly visit again.

Fantastic tapas - really interesting mix of flavours. Highlights were definitely the oxtail and pumpkin as well as the potato with Iberico ham and eggs. Excited to come back here.
M. M.
Wine selection was good. Food was amazing, best tapas in Newcastle. It's small therefore difficult you find a table without booking.

Great little gem hidden off the main streets, good beers and foods with real authenticity. Shame that we noticed the hygiene of the staff and the kitchen environment was not great though!
