A great experience! I had the taste menu and the dishes were all lovely. The ray wing and parsley polenta was excellent coming a close second to the lamb "hotpot"! Adrian and Jo were super at looking after me and Robert Thompson had a long chat before the meal. The chefs bring the dishes out and explain them which is a great touch. You can also ask any questions! Will be visiting again!

Loved it, delicious food and great service. Fine dining at its best and really looking forward to next time. We had the lobster canaloni, the lamb and the sea bream. Fish was moist and lamb was cooked to perfection. Drinks were great and we had the chance to sit by the kitchen. Definitely coming back :)

Absolutely BRILLIANT restaurant with outstanding food. Our Host, Robert Thompson was a delight and the staff and level of service second to none. We had the set menu which was outstanding value for money. Cannot commend this restaurant too highly

Thought I should give this place a try because it was recommended online with very high rating. I wouldn’t say it’s bad but neither is it that good. Having the cutlery underneath the table is a nice little twist. Nothing really Standes out taste wise that’s why only 3 stars from me. Presentation of food however is good and appealing and service fast and friendly. Prices are fair especially seasonal set menu is recommended.

Went for the chef's demonstration today (a delayed Christmas present), followed by 3 course lunch. Congratulations to chef Robert Thompson for an informative, accessible and entertaining demo with lots of great tips - plus congrats to him and the team for the first class service and delicious food!

Cooking demonstration followed by lunch consisting of the dishes we saw prepared. Lovely experience. A bit like having an intimate theatre show followed by a superb meal. As always, very considerate of allergies and the alternative dishes are never second class. Plus, a handy recipe book to take away! Highly recommended! Word of warning, parking is an issue in Newport and as the demo and meal takes over 3 hours, we moved our car before eating. However, there seems to be long stay parking near the cinema....

We chose to celebrate our 2 year wedding anniversary at Thompson's and were understandably expecting a lot given the reviews. We have eaten in several either Michelin starred, or up and coming chef's, restaurants and so were looking forward to this. We had the taster menu and thought the food quality, presentation, and taste was excellent. The wine flight, in our opinion, could have had one more glass & had slightly larger servings (especially when paying £50 extra for it). Agree with another reviewer that the food description could be more engaging. I enjoy seeing up and coming chef's break through, glad we visited, and would happily recommend.

Food is absolutely superb, as expected from a Michelin star chef. Presentation of the food is wonderful. The service was again first class, the staff extremely knowledgeable about the menu. One of our party had a gluten intolerance. The staff ensured that each course was tailored to ensure this did not become an issue. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

The man is a genius and his team are wonderful! been lucky enough to eat here several times in the relatively short time the restaurant was open. Called in to find out their plans and got to speak to the man himself. Sadly for those of us who are looking forward to eating out in May when restaurants re-open, Thompson's will not be one of them! His home delivery business under the brand name UB Chef has done so well Mr T is "pivoting" away from the standard restaurant model. He might pop up somewhere lovely and exotic- hopefully on the island- but the doors of Thompson's will not be opening in May.

We have come to know Robert's cooking through UB Chef, his online service started in lockdown. Having tried several ideas like this from Chefs of all standings across the UK I can say that Robert's are the tastiest, with generous portions, secure delivery and clear instructions. Do try!

So much flavour in the tasting menu. It takes around 3 hours to finish all 8 or 9 courses, but it felt perfectly timed. The staff were fantastic and extremely friendly. This was a birthday treat from my wife, and the chef produced a nice surprise on the dessert as shown in the picture.

Shared a lunch at Christmas with two friends, one of who has unique dietary requirements. They accommodated his needs without any difficulty and more importantly, they delivered the most wonderful food i have had in a good while! The Owner and his team collectively were just superb, service second to none and as has been mentioned elsewhere, they finished when we finished, no pressure from them whatsoever. An unassuming exterior hides this little treasure well, I strongly recommend you book and try their delights

Cosy restaurant with friendly staff who deliver excellent service. Had the tasting menu. Unfortunately the food was not great. Was going to rate higher but rated lower due to the price and prestige of the restaurant. I was shocked to hear this restaurant is Michelin starred (MS). The bread is lovely, but standard for an MS. The amuse bouche was an avocado mouse, very nice and light, but again standard MS fare. The next two courses were bad. The sorbet, goats cheese and tomatoes did not combine well and the texture was very mushy. I have had similar dishes that work but they had contrasting textures and tastes. This was followed by a cuttlefish dish. The taste was too fishy and there was far too much liquid on the plate. Had it been drained and salted it may have been better. We cleared both plates as we were hungry so I would not call them inedible, but it was not enjoyable and had I known it was an MS I would have complained. But as I thought it was a lower rated restaurant I did not give feedback. The lamb shoulder hotpot was very nice and rescued the meal. The lemon curd parfait was also nice. Given the high reviews, perhaps my individual taste is out of step with others. Or perhaps the chef had an off night. I don't consider IoW a foody destination, but I had more satisfying meals for less at other IoW restaurants. We left full, but feeling that the meal was just ok. Once again, would have left a more forgiving review if it was not a Michelin starred restaurant.

Absolute top experience for lunch here on 7th December 2017. Thoroughly relaxed and welcoming atmosphere in this small & intimate restaurant for our party of 3 chaps who made deliberate plans for a quality occasion in the run up to Christmas. Superb food. Good value wines. Robert Thompson and his whole team are great hosts and provided some lovely touches. For the Coeliac in our group (me) the Kitchen Team made 3 individual breads (the cheese ciabatta was sublime) and subtle adjustments to the standard menu. When we asked what time they closed, the response was 'when all our guests have finished their meal". Highly recommended.

Another excellent meal by Robert Thompson. Having eaten at the last three places he's cooked this was the best. Great lunchtime atmosphere, relaxed and child friendly with nice helpful staff. It almost goes without saying but the food was incredible. Fish cooked to perfection, crumbly and delicately seasoned, venison with rich velvety sauce and perfect oysters (one deep fried) and a delicious, smooth and creamy panna cotta. Looking forward to going again, this time for dinner, and hopefully getting a kitchen table!

Fantastic tasting menu with paired wines placing emphasis on the quality of the local produce. Key elements included white honey truffles, herring, cod, charred broccoli and dry aged beef. Cucumber played a recurring role beginning with the bloody mary, cervice, amuse bouche. Still amazed at how much flavor was packed into the banana ice cream quenelle.
