Reviews of Captain America's Hamburger Heaven
P. M.
Trip into Norwich and had to go back to Captain A's. Last came in 2019 but we have been before that. This time didn't disappoint. Service was really good, food great (very filling BLT) and milkshake was brilliant. Yes,decor has changed but still holds some original charm. Will be back!
A. T.
We took the kids here for lunch and had a nice time. The food was good in the main, however there were a few faults.
My partner's diet coke tasted odd, when we looked at the bottle it expired in 2020! This was promptly replaced and many apologies offered. The buns on all the burgers were a little dense from being stale, one was so bad it had to go back, but again this was swiftly replaced and wasn't charged for. The only other issue was that the chips were a bit too salty, albeit we ate them!
We very much wanted to love this place, it had clearly been recently redecorated and looked sharp. The service was very friendly and faultless (they also offered a 10% discount for a subsequent visit). I think any one or two of these faults could be forgiven, but it is hard to do so for all of them. I wouldn't not go back, however the competition is stiff and there are many other places worth a try.

A fond favourite of mine for many years...but sadly this was my last visit to Captain A's.
Half the delight of eating here was the Americana - number plates on the walls and the fantastic booth seating has all been removed to make it look just like any other industrial restaurant.
The play on Captain America has slipped into the menu, with most items now based on Marvel characters, leaving the American aspect behind.
My Thor burger was tasty and the fries were piled high, but my partners enemic hotdog was rather lack-lustre. Sadly the thick shakes were dissapointing too and gone within a few sucks of the straw, rather than the challenge of getting it through your straw of old.
Whilst the staff were friendly and accommodating, this long held favourite eatery has lost its warmth, chararacter and charm.
Good bye old friend
M. C.
Have been going here since the 70s. It has changed hands a couple of times and has recently had a refurb but still great burgers and cocktails
J. S.
Hadn't been here for a long while and was almost put off by some reviews. I'm glad I came. Yes, the decor is different, but the food remains very good and the fries were particularly good. Service was good, they were happy to go to great lengths to accommodate diners. It's not cheap, but quality shouldn't be. If you liked this restaurant in it's heyday then it is still worth a visit.
C. M.
Changed a little from when I was last here, but really good food and amazing staff, would definitely recommend
M. L.
Re-opened today 8th March 2022. Trying hard, limited menu. Good service and good food
B.
I've been here twice in the past couple of weeks and had an absolutely lovely time. The staff especially deserve a 5 star review, they're so charismatic and friendly. Perfect atmosphere for a family meal or celebration with friends.
K. H.
Go here everytime we're in Norwich. Food is 5* and the service is first class. We're lucky enough to have the only captain America in this country. Love the place.
Y.
Food was very nice, very filling. Maple milkshake was extremely nice. Decor was traditionally America, was expecting more captain America comic themes. Our waitress was quiet and didn't appear all that cheerful but fulfilled all requests fine. We were the only ones in the restaurant which was at 5.30 on a Thursday. Music in restaurant didn't a fit the theme but again, very minor issue. Overall food and environment was pleasant.
J. L.
Fantastic experience, food was lovely and the service was above and beyond. Impressive New renovation makes the place look sleek and modern. Can’t fault it! Captain A’s is back!
B. K.
Visited for the first time since refurbished
Very friendly welcome, gone are the cramped benches now separate tables and chairs plenty of room
Food was lovely we had the chilli burger, chips are like home made excellent
Will definitely return!!
B. H.
Great place with American theme and style burgers was great and home made chips was the icing on the cake amazing staff and nothing was 2 much trouble for them 🙂
c.
This restaurant is a must visit! I remember coming here as a child and the only thing that has changed is the menu. And that's not a bad thing! Great service and awesome food. May it continue long into the future.
A. B.
Captain A’s is back!! Yes it looks different from the 1970s but it is still here. Burgers are back to where they were. Menu could do with having some of the classics back. But cant have everything. Great staff. Well done. Like it. Will be back.
W. S.
Nice little American themed restaurant. Been in Norwich for decades and still popular. Rather cheap and good portions and excellent milk shakes!
D. W.
A real slice of americana, great food, great service, great music. I've been visiting on and off since 1980, Captain 'A's' is part of what makes Norwich unique.
R. F.
Really friendly and fun, Vege options on loads of things (ask though as it's not obvious). The food was excellent though.
I. M.
Fantastic food, Friendly staff and brings the best country in the world to one of the greatest city's in the world.
S. M.
A favourite with our family whenever we're in Norwich. Good fun surroundings, good burgers too - but be greedy and have the 1/2lb option
J. T.
10/10 very friendly and welcoming staff, the food was great and reasonably priced.
N. L.
Thought I would pop in here with my son as I had great memories of this place sadly it didn't live up to the memory. Staff were friendly and the place was clean but there was very little space to move once sat down as tables are very close together. The food was passable but sadly nothing to write home about. Captain America's was OK but I will not be visiting again especially with so many restaurants offering the same fare in norwich.
T. “. W.
Very cosy atmosphere. Fast service. Friendly staff. Tasty 🍔 and 🍟. Although Apple Pie was served lukewarm when it would've been nicer served piping hot.
A. B.
First time visiting this restaurant. Entrance opposite Jarrolds. Steep stairs only to the first floor. Could be problematic for people less abled.
Cosy setting. We had reserved a table which is probably recommended.
The choice of starters is limited to three dishes. The main menu had a variety of dishes mainly named after comic book characters so I had a rack of ribs!! The food was plentiful and cooked perfectly. The staff were friendly and attentive. So much so that, as we were wearing Norwich City FC clothing, were asked whether we were season ticket holders. We were and were told we were entitled to 10% off our bill. Result!!
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys an American menu!!
E. B.
Stopped in for lunch. Delicious burger, topped with a generous and delicious topping of chilli.
Mac and cheese as well made, and a good size portion.
G. W.
Went for a nostalgia visit - we used to go 20 years ago.
Not much has changed, from the decor of booths and cars thru the wall, to the menu. That's good and bad.
Service was good, food was nice and a full plateful but overall it just felt a bit average.
If you have youngsters and want that diners experience (with great selection of milkshakes) then give it a go, but their may be other similar joints which are better close by...
M. C.
First class. The food is great the portions are great and the staff are great. I haven't been right through the menu but I'm guessing it doesn't offer much for healthy eaters. Be aware that Captain Americas in Norwich is up on the first floor of the building and there is rather a narrow staircase to navigate. I have not seen a lift there but it might be worth giving them a call before you visit if you are disabled. I highly recommend the Chilli Dogs.
M. J. S.
Great service! Great food!
S. T.
I went with a friend as both of us hadn't been for many years, and fancied a nostalgia trip. It was ok, hadn't changed much. Our table was very wobbly which wasn't great. The food was good, large portions. The price was around what I'd expect to pay,( you can access the menu online).
I would say it's a good place to go if you like American diner experience. Service was excellent. The stairs up to the restaurant are quite narrow and steep so if you have mobility issues then worth bearing in mind
J. H.
Great burgers Great service and a great hostess who made me a white Russian even though it wasn't on the menu brilliant!
J. T.
This burger joint has been around since the early 1970s and it's arrangement of 4-seater, American style booths is unchanged. It's success is due, in the main, to the quality of its burgers. The service is good but unobtrusive too. It's a place to return to if you're a burger fan.
J. W.
In a growing world of gourmet burgers, this place still holds it's own. I remember going here as child and it still keeps it's charm. Certainly offers a far better burger than Oliver's Bistro! This place will outlive all the new burger places, that I am certain. Good food, good service and decent price.
S. L.
First visit, I had a burger and the wife had ribs. And they where superb. Service a little slow, but we where a big group of 10 plus.
If your tall, be aware of the low ceiling on the stairway to the toilets.
B. K.
This place is stuck in a time capsule! I have been here for years and it still the same! Not that it's a bad thing! The food is still as excellent as ever, reasonably priced and great portions! I can't wait till my next visit to Norwich to be able to go here again!
M. K.
Good food at a reasonable price! The only star off is because of the seating being quite hard without any cushions and tight. Not me personally but there will be some people who can't sit inside the booths. Other than that, I'd certainly recommend.
S. W.
A trip down memory lane as our last visit was over 40 years ago. Exactly the same decor but plates and burgers have got smaller and no cucumber relish! Still a good meal out
J. S.
A classic burger bar with a very friendly team. My parents love coming here when they visit Norwich as the menu caters for the whole family.
Unfortunately there are very limited vegetarian options and only a side salad available for vegans, which although difficult is to be expected from a burger bar.
The restaurant itself is quite small so I wouldn't recommend it for large groups, but it's perfect for families.
N. G. (. F.
The classic American themed restaurant in Norwich. The food is good, service is quick and all at reasonable prices.
P. L.
Very nice food but poor service. I went with 5 of my grandchildren we all had something different
The staff were very quick to serve drinks and even asked again before our food arrived. When the food eventually arrived it was one meal short. So had to wait again and not even an apology
s. c.
My first visit and this place is great. If your after polished floors and new furniture this is not for you but if your looking for atmosphere good food friendly staff then this is it! I will be coming back and with all the family. I would recommend this place it's great.
m. h.
Great value burgers, decent plate size, sides were a tad expensive but overall a good place to grab a burger. Nice location and although small in size we had no problem getting seated.
m. r.
Have been going to Captain A's for years. Always great service and great food. A few minor differences since it changed hands about 18 months ago(?), but the new owners have so far succeeded in not messing with a winning formula.
Long may it continue.
O. N.
Had a really tasty cheeseburger here and at a very reasonable price. It's a nice restaurant with lots of character and good food. The thick milkshakes are the best!
J. C.
Just eaten there tonight with the family - 3 young kids, spare of the moment. Good value and the original cubicle set up works really well with a family- no chairs to fall off ! Have been a off & on visitor for 35 years ! . The décor & lighting fab. Switched on staff. The stairs from the loos a kick back to pre health & safety- don't change it !
Don't waste your time at maccy Ds - go to a proper burger place and wont cost you that much more !
F. F.
Nice decor, good friendly service. Tables are a little cramped. Food was nice though burgers a little on the small side. Would come again.
M. R.
Very tasty burger with coleslaw.
B. R.
History - I've been here lots and and every time it's great. Lovely food (go for the ribs) really well priced and great portions- a visit to Norwich should include Captain A's as a must.
E. h.
Good sized portions and tasty burgers. Cant grumble
W. W.
This is the best place I have been. The food and atmosphere is second to none and the staff are very helpful and always very polite. I have eaten all over the world but always enjoy going back to this restaurant.
S. D.
We turned up on a Saturday hoping to squeeze in somewhere. It as no trouble and we were made welcome and had a great burger. If you love burgers you'll love this place
S. C.
Great food, great service - as always 😀
J. L.
Great food at a great price. You aren't going to be getting Michelin worthy food but you won't be disappointed. One of the best burgers in Norwich.
A. V.
Food was delicious, enjoyed every bite. Price was good for what was purchased. Student discounts are given, so that was a bonus.
C. F.
This place is a hidden gem of a restaurant that needs to expand around the county, King's Lynn first though! Its always a great atmosphere, food is top and its my first port of call every time i go to Norwich!
L. D.
Very good service and food. Really nice Mac and cheese as well as burgers. Would definitely recommend.
R. N.

K. H.
My 8yr loved the decor, the food was decent, only issue was our clean looking but very sticky table!
R. B.
The change it need looks amazing i hope you all enjoy it like i did
H. E.
I love it there but it has changed a lot from when it first open wish it hadn't i dont mind change but some places should stay the same menu not as good aswell will go back but not rush back
G. M.
This place has been around for years, and the decor is bit tired, but the foods pretty good. Worth a visit but I doubt it would be frequent one, worth a look.
L. M.
Enjoyable food, cosy setting and good service. A personal favourite local venue and possibly the best burgers in town.
J. M.
This place has been operating for years hence they must be doing something right. Traditional American style diner with dishes to match. Not ridiculously expensive either.
F. S.
I have been to captain americas and it is the best American diner there is, the staff are lovely and the service is brilliant, I would recommend this for kids and adults, by the way I love the chocolate milkshake they do !!!!😀😀😀
C.

J. R.

K. F. m.
We came here to reminisce about the past as we use to come here as kids with our grandfather, good food and great staff, quick service
s. g.
If you hadn't been here before you would think it's OK. Sadly it's not great as it once was. Portions getting smaller but sadly not the price.
C. R.
Probably not the best burger restaurant in Norwich any more but still tasty and worth a visit for the decor and the milkshakes if nothing else.
s. d.
