J. G.An interesting menu with burgers that aren’t ‘basic’. Had the Swiss Tony which was tasty. The beef patty itself could be more flavourful in my opinion but still good overall. I love that it comes with fries so you don’t have to order it separately. My friend had the special- Honey Side Up, which had chicken tenders, a beef patty and bacon. Surprisingly it wasn’t too much and the chicken was very good. I think it’s quite reasonably priced for what you get as well
J. H.Really impressed with this place! The range of burgers (as it is considered a burger restaurant) is impressive. You don't need to worry about any dietary requirements as each option can be tailored to cater for your specific needs. The staff are friendly, accommodating and were very knowledgeable of the menu - something you don't get too often these days. I went as part of my work team's Christmas lunch and they really did go the extra mile for us (and we're not a fussy bunch!).
The burger I had was appetising, full of flavour and looked inviting from the moment it was brought out. Even the side dishes were seasoned perfectly. There was an extensive range of drinks, offering unusual options (which I'll need to go back to try) to go with your meal. You won't be disappointed.
All in all, great value for the food and drink on offer and, when you throw in the lively atmosphere combined with staff qualities, you'll hopefully be as impressed as I was. Looking forward to my next chance to visit.
P. “. A.We had a brilliant night at Fat Hippo! Great atmosphere created by the welcoming staff. Food was delicious and arrived in good time. We were too full to try any of the desserts but the burgers were great (we had the Hans Gru-burger and the PB & JJ) We also really enjoyed the fried pickles.
We didn't use the loos so I can't tell you what they were like (sorry!) The onlt reason we didn't give the Fat Hippo 5 stars was due to the slippy stairs. Not sure if they are always like this but I did not feel safe. It needs sorting. To avoid this, ask for a seat downstairs.
T.Good food, not bad prices either. Visited on a bank holiday so wasn't able to get the 2 courses for £14.50. Would recommend to book, was lucky enough to get a table but everyone after us was told its a 2 hour+ wait. The beef is better than the fried chicken.
S. N.A great burger joint to go to. Quality burgers and sides. The tater tots were amazing and not many places serve tater tots so I was very happy. Burgers were great too really was a quality burger. Good selection of sauces and drinks too. The lemonade pint I got was very nice. This place is great - the burgers is great and they also have some interesting other starters and chicken burgers which I haven't tried but for now I have given it 4 stars because it doesn't quite compare to Bohns burgers just opposite and I am yet to try more of the menu.
L. P.First time visiting and we all enjoyed it. The Swiss Tony was really tasty and not too messy. The beer battered cheese was filthy but delicious. Disappointed that they were all out of chicken and draught soft drinks but overall had a good experience.

NIGHT ONE:
"FRICKLES" (Fried Pickles) ... Game changer for me. I can normally take them or leave them (regular pickles).. but I'm glad my curiosity for the better of me as I absolutely loved these, served with a cool sour cream and a spicy Cajun sauce... Spicy, Hot, Sour, crispy batter, juicy pickle slices (think dusted in a Cajun spice mix) .. mmmmm
Ordered a main course (almost regrettably as the starter was big by my standards) which was the 'Tropic Thunder' with fries.. Again, very big, and as a burger I can't fault it, really tasty, and the candied pineapple and jerk bacon is a great combo of that 'salty-, sweet' that really compliments the slaw to bring the burger together. Possibly one negative; in that it was impossible to dislocate my jaw so I could to take a bite. Ended up using knife and fork??
BEER - House Lager was very nice... I'm not going to go into how that tastes other that it tasted of 'more'.
SERVICE:
Excellent, had a lovely young lady serving who was very attentive and polite. Checked on me often, but not too much.

DAY 2:
Call it laziness, but I did look around at other places and menus.. but I could hear the FRICKLES call out my name from the end of the street!!
So, I returned but this time with no main. Just a starter and a side, and finished with a shake.
SIDE: Sweet potato fries with Hippo Hot Sauce and Bacon Bits.
If you're getting the FRICKLES, this is a perfect partner to it! Make sure you get the house IPA to wash it down, as you'll need it!
SHAKE: Only negative of the two nights, AVOID.
"Mars Attack" didn't live up to the hype. It claims it's made with chocolate ice-cream, and it's not. Mine was above Luke warm, and tasted like Nesquick.. and not the way my mum used to make it (3 big spoons) but more like a teaspoon! Tasted like milk with chocolate essence, where you should have a deep-dark burst of chocolate somewhere (even introduce chocolate fudge sauce?) Oh, and salt.. needs a pinch of salt of you do end up fixing that shake (FYI - dessert chef..)
ATMOSPHERE: Pleasant, lighting is purposefully dark with spotlights, which works really well and fits in with decor.
I'd 100% recommend this place, and I'll be back one day for those excellent FRICKLES!

The service was good and staff were welcoming.
I had the American which was good. I like pickles and it was smothered in them. The burger was just the correct portion for me. My friend had the Hangover III chicken burger which was about twice the size of my burger for only £1 extra (recommended). The fries were excellent. My only qualm was with the cost of the Schofferhoffer radler. £3.90 for a 330ml can is rather excessive. A 500ml can is the same price in some local establishments.

2nd dining experience.... 1 star...
After an amazing first experience I went back and had an absolutely disaster of an experience that made me and my daughter walk out after sitting there for over an hour without getting our main meals.
We sat outside and ordered at the same time as another party of 3. When they got their burgers, we got our cheese ball appetizers, which was 30mins after ordering. Asked the server if it would be another 30mins for out burgers, her reply was "oh, do youbwant me to fired them now?" I was shocked and said "you didn't put my whole order in already?"
Another table next to us that sat down and ordered 15-20 minutes after us got their cheese balls at the same time as us
Another 30mins goes by, by this time the a table of 3 that ordered the same time as us had already finished and left. A different table of 3 that ordered 30mins after us, got their burgers. The table of 2 that received their cheese balls at the same time as us, then got their burgers.
We sat there for a few more minutes before I just couldn't take it and walked out, telling the host that it was ridiculous. I said "I still wanted to pay for the cheese balls, milkshake and lemonade" but she said no, so I gave her a £10 as a tip to the staff. I appreciate the works servers/kitchen staff do.
I can not say that this is a typical experience there. I been there twice and they were drastically different. First time the place was not busy, second time, it was busy. But it seems as though the kitchen of servers are not good at multi-tasking.
My daughter went there for her birthday with her mother and they had a great experience too.... so hopefully that is the normal way things operate.
I hate writing this but as a business owner myself, I appreciate critic and knowing how my staff does.

The food was excellent, not healthy one bit but very very good. The cheese loaded cheese balls were heavenly. The burgers were well portioned and very tasty. The staff was great as well. They had french fries that were thin and crispy; as well as, thicker fries that more hand cut.
I really enjoyed my dining experience here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a cool place, friendly staff and good food.

A. R.Visited Fat Hippo Nottingham today for a late lunch with a friend. Quite a dark / grungy / dive bar decor, though the tables are well lit. We arrived after 3pm and were seated quickly and efficiently. We were given ample time to peruse the menu and our server came and took our food and drink order in a timely manner. Our drinks arrived almost immediately after ordering and our food only took about ten minutes more, so speedy efficient service too. The burgers were enjoyable (nice brioche style buns) and I particularly liked the dirty chips, though one could argue the sides were a tad meagre. All in, including food (little Bill, Wild Bill, dirty chips upgrade) and drinks (half pint Pepsi and half pint cloudy lemonade) our bill was £23.90. So there’s a pretty good chance we’ll be visiting again to explore more of the menu. If you’re a burger fan and in Nottingham worth a visit 😁👍👍👍
R. F. W.Great Service from when you arrive they ask you to order drinks strait away however whenever you order a drink it takes a while for them to come out because of how busy the restaurant is. The food is gorgeous all instructions followed loads of choice and plenty of sauce! Toilets in awkward location but not a down side.

M. S.First time we've been to Fat Hippo, won't be the last! It's rare to visit a burger restaurant where fries are included, so wasn't sure how generous the portion sizes would be. We weren't disappointed! We ordered the Harlem Fake and Five Lies - both were quite possibly the best plant based burgers we'd had in a long time. The only reason FH didn't get five stars is because the restaurant is too dark! The setting is gorgeous, just across the road from Broadway so why is the restaurant bathed in darkness? It needs brighter lighting and some bold, bright, design choices. It's Nottingham not Shoreditch!
Other than the cave-style ambience, I'd highly recommend Fat Hippo..Less expensive than Annie's and I'd go as far to say better burgers too. And the waiting staff are friendly and professional.

S.Two of us went here recently where we had two vegan burgers and fries. The fries were amazing (would definitely order them again), but the vegan burgers were not anything to write home about. Staff were very polite and friendly. Outdoor seating area was clean. Service was fast. All in all, it was a nice visit, but the fact the vegan burgers were not really that great means its unlikely we would go there again over Bohns Burgers, which specifically for vegan burgers, are pretty great.

R. G.I loved my meal here the other day. Was able to swap out the beef patties on my burger for buttermilk chicken and oh my, I did not regret that decision. To be honest I would have just had a plate of the buttermilk chicken in favor of the burger. The chicken was perfectly crisp on the outside and super tender inside - highly recommend! I was very satisfied with the price we paid. Added up to around £20 per person, which included a burger, chips, milkshake and a side. Staff are attentive, friendly and not bothered if you want to deviate from the menu a bit. Food came out hot and in good time. Not much negative I can say about this place really, would have liked more interesting burger options on the menu and possibly reduce the price of the extra sauce options. Overall, I left full and pleased. I'm looking forward to eating there again.

The food is definitely worth the wait though bug juicy tasty burgers and chips. Good variety of drinks, my husband was disappointed that the milkshakes were unavailable but unavoidable I suppose. Would definitely go again if in Nottingham.

If I had one criticism it would be that their range of puddings is no where near as good as the range of burgers which was disappointing as we would certainly have had puddings if my partner would have found a vegan pudding she liked on the menu.

Burger was nice although mine was drenched in American mustard which I’m not a big fan of, probably a poor menu choice from myself. My friends seem to enjoy theirs more.
Biggest complaint was the drinks, no beers on tap at all and bottled beer was £4.50 for a 330ml bottle. Not having beer on draft at a burgers and fries was absolutely bonkers to me, even the waiter said he didn’t understand why they didn’t have any.
Would definitely try again avoiding the mustard burger and probably sticking to soft drinks. Currently would say Bohns across the road is better (and has beer!)

I do find that the chicken burgers seem big and tasty when arriving however they are mainly built of batter which causes a lot of grease. Not a huge drink menu too, but I guess it's not a bar. Quite long service too, waited a while for service.

Restaurant was clean and beautifully cool in the summer heat.
Menu might have been reduced but the portion sizes definitely were not - every single part of each course was fantastic - including the various fries that we ate (often overlooked and bland in a lot of places) - burgers were fantastic, starters were more like sharers and tasted great - food was saucy, but NOT greasy which is all too common in burger restaurants.
Bacon in my milkshake - and it worked????
Three courses (and extras) done and dusted in less than an hour - cannot fault the speed, the staff were very friendly and welcoming.
100% would recommend......
The only downsides were I couldn't move afterwards, and the tiled toilet floor and adjoining corridor could do with a decent hot soapy mop to lift the grease.

The fat hippo sauce is incredible and the desserts are just as good as the main meal.

g. h.It's rare, and refreshing, to find a place like this that doesn't bat an eyelid when you ask if you can have the regular meat based menu but with the veggie options. Obviously not every ingredient converts to vegetarian, but it really opens up the menu and makes for a much more exciting veggie experience.

Tom Boon was our favourite as he really took the time with us, had a laugh about the names of the dishes. I’ll definitely be returning.

J. R.Food here was excellent, I had the 4x4 burger with skinny fries. The fries are cooked perfectly, the portion is good and they're saltedd to perfection - they taste like an upmarket McDonalds fry. The beef patties were flavourful and moist without being greasy.
Also strongly recommend their Hippo Orange Soda - it beats Fants hands down.
Give this place a go.
C. C.I was really looking forward to eating at Fat Hippo after hearing such great things. Although the food was absolutely delicious and I could not fault it at all, the service was extremely disappointing. Staff were extremely slow to attend to us despite the restaurant not being particularly busy and it took about 20 minutes to grab their attention when we wanted the bill. We noticed that a lot of the time the staff were not evening scanning the room to see if we had finished or needed anything more. For that reason, I will only be ordering takeout in the future.

D. A.Extremely slow on food coming out. Waited 45 mins for starters and a further 35 mins for mains and had to leave without finishing our main mean as we were already late to our cinema booking . The waitress did explain it was due to a tech issue. Food tastes great though and it's definitely worth another try

I have the notorious burger which was imitation southern fried chicken, hash browns, BBQ sauce and fat hippo sauce. I had a side of dirty sweet potato fries with facon, onion rings and and chipotle mayo. I can't pick a single fault with any item they gave me and it was simply delicious, please don't just take my word for it and go give it a try.
H. L.Fat hippo is a really nice restaurant, good and local to the area of Hockley and I would advise going with an empty stomach has portions are large and greasy however it is a good grease not when you do your hair with.
e.Burgers were stacked very high and were really yummy! all burgers come with a little bucket of fries on the side. I got an additional fillet of chicken in my burger but it had soooo much thyme on it that it was inedible and had to remove it. I hope that’s just a one off and the cook accidentally put too much on. Will definitely be visiting again however, burger was just too good. I got the one with waffle chips blue cheese onion jam and jalapeños.
A. G.Food good when it finally arrived. Only ordered mains and took over an hour to arrive. When it did arrive, food was luke warm and had to send back, they brought back the reheated food about 10-15 mins later. Trying to pay the bill also took a long time. I think the kitchen staff seemed like they were on it and food had clearly been sat waiting to go out for some time hence it was cool. Lots of staff front of house too, just didn't seem to know what they were doing

C.Had high hopes for this place. Ordered on deliveroo, was a little late but I wasn't too bothered because I expected them to be busy. Ordered the American, one patty was medium rare and the other was rare. Despite that, it tasted rather dry. (I like consistency) I asked for no pickles, so they only put sauce (a little blob) and cheese. Maybe this was a one off experience?
When we're allowed to dine in, I'll have to give it another try. Maybe my experience will be better!
S.Not bad at all. Good flavour and portion but definitely too much salt. Got 2 burgers and both had an overwhelming salty tasty that can turn you off wanting to finish eating.

So that put a downer on things. Plus the place was freezing cold. Wish the door was closed when it's cold outside. May visit again but not if I keep seeing reviews about the salt.

J. N.They don't lie about serving one of the best burgers in Nottingham. It's in other elements that the Fat Hippo lacks, where other burger places do better. Go for a relaxed atmosphere and a damn good burger, but don't expect much in the way of desserts, shakes and other drinks.
