Reviews of Shanghai Shanghai
s. w.
Amazing. We initially we had tried to go elsewhere Cantonese, but we were turned away because it closed at 8pm. So we walked up to Shanghai Shanghai. It’s a very plain looking restaurant with a cafe type look. But was full of Chinese people. I think that tells how good it was going to be. We’re so glad we tried it. The food was amazing, service was good, price was what you expect in town. Try the salt and pepper chips. Wow!!!
Loved it 10/10
S. A.
Food was amazing, cooked perfectly. My Ribs were tender, Prawns were delicious and our mains were lovely too. Great service, very polite and attentive.
N. n.
The food is amazing. Second time I've gone and both times i had an amazing experience and even when it's busy the food comes fast...sometimes one dish takes a while but not a big deal overall. Staff are very friendly. I defo recommend the sweet and sour chicken
D. M.
Came on the off-chance as bumped in to friends in Hockley.
Food is good and decent quantities. Seemed quite expensive I guess came to £160 for 5 of us but we did have quite a bit left over and I probably ate too much so may be not so bad.
M. A.
Nice Chinese cuisine, it names Shanghai but it's probably mixed cuisine like Szechwan. The food is delicious. Reminded that the vegetable soup is not vegetarian because it has dried scallop
A. M.
I'm a big fan of authentic Chinese cuisine, and this restaurant is a must try!
Certainly the best in Nottingham.
Good portion sizes, a wide range of menu options and exceptional food.
Customers can expect to pay £8-10 per person.
j. d.
Sumptuous Thai spring rolls & Cantonese Noodles. Definitely tried the wrong choice of sauce (Sweet & Sour) for Chicken. Will go give it another try though.
C. H. C.
Great food which came out in good time. They have a rather large menu which can be a bit intimidating. Would like to see them streamline the menu to something about half the size.
s. b.
It's a 'very local ' place but very welcoming. More of a cafe atmosphere but the food was good and very reasonably priced 😊
S. M.
The best authentic Chinese food with the best service we've ever had. We travel 90 minutes regularly just to eat here. Special mention for the salted egg prawns, Gan Bien Dou Jiao and cumin lamb
J. W.
Delicious, very authentic. Big portions (recommend 2 mains between 3)and a lot of really interesting options. Had the mixed meat hotpot. A little pricey but you get what you pay for.
E.
A small Chinese restaurant in Nottingham City where Id always walked past seeing Chinese people enjoy their own food so... curiosity got me.
I ordered prawn crackers, salt and pepper squid, duck wraps, Singapore noodles, garlic and chilli chicken and chicken satay.
The good: satay sauce, noodles and squid & chilli chicken were all lovely
The average: the duck was a bit dry. Ive had better...
The ugly: prawn crackers just tasted of oil, chicken satay was like leather
For all that it was £50 (no alcohol) so not the cheapest. Service was fine but no frills.
Overall a mixed bag
T.
Authentic Chinese food. Been here more than 10x and will be coming back more. large portions making it worth the money.
J. P.
I think a lot of people are complaining because they have never experienced authentic Chinese cuisine. Don't come here if you expect your typical takeaway food, this is the real deal - homestyle food not westernised interpretations. Excellent prices too.
K. V.
Food was reasonably priced appetiser was over cooked though. Menu had a lot of Chinese dishes not usually found at other similar restaurants. If you fancy trying more exotic dishes that are more common in China not just pork and noodles then this is a good choice. Restaurant interior looks dated and not visually appealing but plenty of seats inside.
X. W.
Smaller than i thought before but taste of delicacy is great!!Do recommend Hong Shao Rou !
K. M.
One of the best Chinese restaurant. The lady was friendly, accomodating and the food great
M. H. (.
I had an amazing meal here, the food came very quickly and was to a very good standard.
One thing I will say is that the Cantonese style duck is quite sharp and bony so take caution if you decide to order it.
S. W.
Beautiful tasty food and staff were very welcoming and professional
R. N.
The staff was really nice and the food was amazing a lot of options and very quick.
Y. L.
The food is troumandously tasty. Sooo authentic Sichuan style, soooo nice food !!!
m.
Went here late Saturday night. The prices were extremely reasonable, with large portions of delicious and varied dishes. Service was friendly, attentive and quick. Came to Nottingham for a 2 day event and this meal was the highlight, so that says something!
A. J.
Great value, variety of very tasty dishes. We have been going for many years. This restaurant prioritises it's food over other dining experiences. Service can sometimes be a little strange, but it always works out in the end. Very much a casual dining experience.
T. I.
I went there to have their famous dim sum fo lunch. It was delicious.
M. O.
Service had no order to it. One main dish was missed totally
K. W.
Just brilliant. Really friendly staff, amazing food, clean, clean facilities, great atmosphere. Go to this place!
D. L.
I ate well, and I was very satisfied. The serving is excellent and and the food very good.
C. W.
Good tasty food, basic set up and not fine dining but food is good quality
m.
Pros: friendly staff, wide range of food selection, and three cup chicken is amazing.
Cons: overall food quality has room for improvement, and their spicy noodles are way too spicy (even I asked for slight spicy, still fail to handle the heat)
E. E.
Good price and tasty. A bit too salty.
m. f.
Very good restaurant! Amazing food, I recommend it to everyone who likes Chinese food. The staff is very nice. Everything was perfect.
R. C.
Great food. Clean. Service good. Best food afaic in local area.
K. T.
The BEST Chinese food in Nottingham!! 10/10
We ordered a range of food and every dish was presented nicely and tasted AMAZING!
I’ve been to many Chinese restaurants in Nottingham but Shanghai Shanghai is definitely the best of them all!
Would 100% visit again!
P. M.
We sat outside as was a nice day and didn't really appreciate that people were allowed to smoke on the tables next to us as we ate.
Food was nice but nothing to write home about.
Staff were friendly and food arrived quickly.
T.
One of the best Chinese meals I've had. Had the sizzling beef with black bean sauce and it was delicious. The beef was tender and soft. Food came out pretty quick. Service is standard, not too attentive but I didn't mind much. I thought the prices were fair too given I've paid the same for much worse.
J. W.
Exceeded our expectations, thank you for a delicious meal and wonderful friendly service. See you again. The Sichuan menu and hot pot is a must
A. A.
Fantastic restaurant.! Taste is really finger licking good. ! Ordered 'Satay Chicken' with Peanut sauce + 'Chicken Fried Rice'. All were tasty. ! A nice place in the centre of the city.!
S. N.
A great Chinese restaurant to try out. The portions at this place were huge and we had so much to takeaway as we were surprised by how much food we were served. The roast duck was great but make sure you ask it without the bones as the bones were a bit of a nuisance to have to deal with. The noodles were lovely and as you can see was a huge dish. The Kung po chicken was also good although it was a bit extra for our order and a bit unnecessary. Overall a good place definitely worth checking out however nothing too amazing and hence only 4 stars.
A. K. (.
Excellent traditional Chinese food, very tasty. Nice staff, unpretentious place. Just great
P. M.
I've been to this restaurant a few times before and will always return when in Nottingham. Really enjoy the food and the service is quick and friendly. Would recommend this place for a good Chinese meal.
P. D.
We were stuck for a place to eat in due to Covid requiring bookings as place go fast, when we passed this unassuming place. It was late by then, so they had space and we walked straight in.
For me, it was one of the best Chinese meals I've ever had. Spare ribs starter and crispy chili beef with egg fried rice were done to perfection. As was the sizzling pepper beef.
The staff were friendly and efficient. The place was clean and they observed the proper Covid restrictions, so they were cleaning down all the time and it was well ventilated.
I will definitely visit this place each time I'm in town.
R. C.
Incredible menu variety and authenticity.
S. S.
I felt the food was very good, but not great. The price was more fine-dining, the service rendered wasn't as much. Plastic cutlery is a big let down. All in all, amazing food but can find better for the price. U-Canteen is probably a bewter option. Next time.
N. B.
I've read some of the bad reviews and they do not chime with my experience.
This is hands down the best chinese restaurant I've been to in Nottingham so far.
Way better than Mr Mans and also the experience I had at u-canteen. Although i would like to go back to confirm.
Can't wait to go back.
Delicious food for a reasonable price.
J. S.
Found the quality of the dishes to be better than average. Fairly broad range too. Staff were also very helpful and able to prepare food in a rush. They were also very willing to box leftovers up for us to take away. Only downside is that the price is on the higher side. Having said that, it wasn't outrageously expensive and i would definitely recommend. Look forward to returning!
H. N. u. h. d. N.
The food is very delicious! I was just shocked, how much food the customers waste. They order 4-5 dishes for two people and eat just a few spoons of everything. The gets thrown away. As a restaurant owner with a sense of sustainability I would recommend them, not to order more food than what they really can eat. Everything else is a shame for every creatures, that lands on the table/ plate.
J. R.
Tasty food, accommodated a big group of us. Sea salt aubergine and spicy prawns were lush.
P. k. E.
Nice authentic Chinese food.
It is a bit pricy but they make up in originality.
They seem to have reduced the quantity of food for the price you pay compared to 3 years ago.
If you want something different to wayside Chinese takeout ill recommend shanghai shanghai
V. R.
Proper Chinese food.
At a good price.
A. B.
Aubergine and sea spice sauce wow
C.
Great food, a very varied menu of Northern and Southern Chinese delights. The big pot of noodles, soup and rice are very good value as well as being very authentic and delicious. They have a lot of Chinese patrons which is a always a good sign. Staff are friendly and helpful. My other half is who Chinese is blissfully happy there.
The things that need changing are structural. Get rid of the fridges on the side that are virtually empty and create a partition so that when customers come through the door, the other customers already sitting there are not blasted with the cold air. At the very least, change the door so it automatically shuts itself as sitting near the drafty door, but not near enough so you can reach over and shut it, is very annoying.
While the restaurant does not have a lot of ambiance, it does serve such good food that you can overlook its shortcomings. Enjoy!
H. C.
Food is excellent although I though price for the boiled rice was a bit pricey. I do definitly recommend this place, however staff seems to be always on the rush and never free.
s. i.
Absolutely 💯 beautiful food. First class service and meal. Will definitely go back there again.
A. P.
Cheerful place. Menu has changed a fair bit and prices have increased over the past years but the food still tastes great. There are a lot of authentic choices and the clientele are testament to this! Been a happy customer of this place for years!
C. C.
Great food. The duck was lovely, as was the sweet and sour chicken. But the chilli beef was amazing.
H. N.
Food is alright for the price. Staff are friendly. Their sweet & spicy aubergine is really good. Sadly they don't accept AMEX card payment!
x.
The food was amazing, there's even vegan options. I got served so kindly by the staff, it's a great place to go to 😁
D. A.
The food is mediocre at best. I've had better tasting Chinese food for better prices. The service is less than average. The waiters make you feel like they don't want you there.
n. d.
great food, central location, staff friendly
L. M.
We have been to this restaurant on every family meal out in Nottingham and have had the best meal every time! It beats all our local Chinese restaurants in London! Food is delicious and the staff are really lovely! We will be coming back here many more times
k. r.
Nice place if looking for some Chinese at Lunch time. Their menu has a lot of mains and starters in list with chicken, beef and pork with rice or noodles. They also have vegetarian options and you can try some flower tea.
R. Q.
Had a takeaway from this place. Decent portions. Friendly staff and food is delicious. Highly recommend.
H. K.
Food was delicious, I had a set menu and everything was hot and fresh. Would recommend 👌
S. B.
The noodles were really delicious and the staff named Jessica was really sweet and helpful. There’s vegan, vegetarian options too !!
P. C.
Great value for money, authentic Chinese cuisine, reasonably priced with friendly service, as close to the real China as you'll get in the East Midlands.
C. I.
Ordered numerous dishes for sharing.
Good food, well-sized portions and very reasonably priced.
G. V.
Fantastic food. Small and nice restaurant. Not fine dining but worth for every penny you pay. Worth the visit....
Menu is huge and amazing.
C. D.
One of the best Chinese food I've had in this country. Don't not walk past this gem. Very friendly welcoming staff, chilled atmosphere and wonderful food with a huge choice. Will definitely be returning. Thank you Shanghai
J. B.
There are a lot of very average Chinese restaurants in the UK. This isn't one of them! Fresh tasting and authentic food. Not a romantic destination but the food is really good.
l.
quality food for a reasonable price. will definitely come again if I’m in the area. 😎
S. S.
Nice food with 4 people one dish served well after the other three but was ok
O. M.
Brilliant food, quick service, very authentic. You could tell by the mix of clientele that it's gaining some headway amongst multiple demographics. Will definitely return when in Notts.
S. A. C.

A. S.

M. H.
Very tasty dishes. Quick and friendly service. Calm atmosphere. A great place to go with friends.
M. W.
Very good food. Service was a bit hit or miss, but perhaps that was because we were a large party (about 15 people)
T. S.
Great food and drink. Friendly staff. Especially enjoyed the beef and ginger.
T. G. M.
Recommend this restaurant for an authentic Chinese meal.
J. S.
Authentic food, good taste and huge choice of dishes. Staff is alright. A tiny little bit overpriced for the atmosphere.
C. K.
Great food at a good price. Not much English spoken but pointing works. Massive menu and fast service.
They accept cards too.
J. F.
Superbly authentic szechuan cuisine. Last time there had the spicy pigs feet which had been cooked till gelatinous and came with a piping hot and properly spicy sauce.
L.
Just perfect, sitting out in the evening, enjoying the atmosphere of a Saturday night whist eating beautiful food.
J. H.
Although the decor is understated the food was great. Some of the best Chinese I've had, especially the lemon chicken
S. v. K.
absolutely first rate food and service.
this is a little cafe style restaurant with food that will put the big fancy Chinese restaurants to shame.
do not walk... run... to this little treasure and you will love it!
C. F.
Tasty food, reasonably price but not so good service.
A. M.
Great (not frozen) food and good service. Prices are a little high but the portion sizes are satisfying.

Great food selection but a bit on the salty side

The food is very good, tastes really nice.
L. H.
Stick to the Szechuan side of the menu (as long as you like your food fiery). Go hungry as portions are huge and authentic.

(Translated) Sichuan cuisine is not very good, there is no numbness and spicyness that it should have. This dish called hot and sour noodles is also very general. It uses sweet potato flour with a layer of chili oil on top, and it has no sour taste. Others are ok
(Original)
川菜做得不太行,该有的麻和辣都没有。这个叫酸辣粉的菜也很一般,用的是红薯粉,上面一层辣油,也没有酸味。其它的还可以吧

(Translated) Chinese restaurant with decent food quality, but as a Sichuan cuisine expert to evaluate its dishes, it is really not eye-catching. It is good to come here occasionally to satisfy cravings. In fact, the main problem is the ingredients, not the ingredients that are usually used in China, so I will It feels weird.
