Reviews of The Chequered Skipper Pub & Restaurant
H. R.
Lovely pub, friendly staff and dog friendly!
Not overly expensive. There's plenty of outside space, which is nice.
If you want a traditional British pub experience, drop in!
G. P.
Lovely lunch accompanied with a couple of beers. Nice to be able sit on the green and watch the peacocks. Staff very helpful and attentive.
H. T.
Beautiful evening & ate alfresco with lovely live piano music. Food v good & service nice & friendly. Had fish curry & orange cake for dessert.
G. D.
Beautiful country pub & restaurant, situated right on the village green of Ashton.
Celebrating the Oundle Fringe festival for local bands artists.... amazing outside location for live music 👍😎

Absolutely amazing food, such lovely staff who really could not do enough for us. Your attention to detail really made the weekend. Will be back no doubt 🥰
M. A.
Lovely pub. Went there for a Christmas meal. The leak and potato soup tasted more like potato without any uknt of leak, but the main Christmas main was a delight. The puddings looked lovely but I chose not to participate. I had one of their mince pies later, the pasty was dry and crisp but the filling was very juicy and moist. A lovely juxtaposition.
No loud music if you are looking for somewhere quieter.

Very very pretty location. Perfect if the weather is good. Didn't have food but i bet it would have been good. Not cheap tho.
R. R.
Excellent gastro-pub in an idyllic setting. Drinks and staff very good, menu looked great if slightly on the expensive side
A. M.
We visited with some friends and our dogs. On the positive side the location is beautiful, building and gardens lovely and most of the staff were very friendly. The desserts were very tasty. The negative however was the main food. Whist some great ideas where there (confit duck and waffles with maple for example) things were really overcooked. The pizza bases were burned, properly black not just a little charred. The waffles were rock hard and overcooked, gave a sense of being reheated. Turn the oven temperature down and things will be vastly improved.
B. F.
Lovely atmosphere, excellent food and very helpful staff. First rate.
A. H.
Haven't been there in years. The food was delicious.
The pub has been renovated to a high standard, it's lovely inside, and the courtyard and green in front are perfect for a summer drink or bite to eat.
Highly recommend
J. W.
Very happy friendly staff, meal freshly cooked. We had the light lunch it was huge. £13.95 for two courses excellent value. If you are in the area, don't miss out on it
D. R.
Stopped here for a drink with friends & was very happy to see one of my favourite beers Leffe on tap. The pub is upmarket but we received a warm welcome & the seats on the village green is lovely. Recommended.

Good but should be better.
The Chequered Skipper is a family run pub and restaurant in the village of Ashton. The setting is lovely but unfortunately the food didn’t match the atmosphere.
I ordered a gluten free cheese burger; my wife ordered fish and chips with salad. Unfortunately when the food arrived my wife’s salad looked and tasted like it was made sometime yesterday or maybe the day before and my “gluten free” cheese burger was a cheese burger without the bun. I didn’t order a burger without the bun; I ordered a gluten free burger and they are not the same thing.
It is 2021, not 1921 so there is no excuse for not having gluten free options on the menu. It’s not hard, all it takes is a packet of gluten free burger buns and a loaf of gluten free bread in the freezer then you thaw a slice or a bun when you need one.
The setting is worth five stars, the soggy salad and bun-less burger reduced you to 2.5 stars but I’ll be kind and round it up to 3 stars. My advice: buy a packet of gluten free burger buns and a packet of gluten free bread for £1.50 from Asda. Keep them in your freezer and thaw a slice whenever you need one.
It’s not hard.

Lovely pub, great food, nice staff. One star off the atmosphere as a lack of soft furnishings and tables close together make it difficult to sustain a conversation (or maybe the room was full of loud people, either way conversation was difficult)
T. S.
We were here for a end of year Christmas dinner!! Food was fabulous, staff amazing. The ambience and live Christmas carols - definitely 5* from me. A lovely evening x
A. C.
Excellent service from friendly staff. Food was great and plenty of it. As for the location, what a lovely place. A two hour journey from home, but well worth the effort... (we went to meet up with friends).

Ella, our waitress, couldn't have been more welcoming. She made our visit even nicer with her sunny disposition. The ingredients and menu were first rate but the execution on the night we went was just slightly lacking. I'm sure that it is usually amazing but my Barley Risotto was a little salty and the watercress garnish was yellowing. And some elements on my plate were cooler than others. We went on a particularly cool evening and as the first guests in the restaurant we found the room a little chilly. I'm sure that later in the evening it would probably have warmed up but I'll wear something warmer when we visit again. All in all, good value and great food served by exceptional staff. Will definitely visit again to give the food a second chance. And when we do, we will definitely order the Citrus Posset which was amazing!
G. W.
Best Roast beef we've had in a long time! Absolutely brilliant food and good range of drinks too! Cosy fire and lovely staff! Will certainly be back!
j. c.
Really loved this pub/eatery. A beautiful thatched pub with a large patio comfortably laid out for dining as well as indoor tables.
Well decorated, with walls exhibiting local artists work for sale. Clean throughout and the village green across the driveway for additional seating and dining. A very small village so little traffic makes for the only extra noise 6 or so Peacocks strutting around. Service was excellent, lovely people. The menu is small but covers every base. Have the Prawns, so good. Sorry no photos, I'll have to go back.
M. E.
Had a large group for a farewell and was so happy we chose the Chequered skipper. The location is stunning, the service was great and the food very well done. Thanks Sophie and team for a memorable experience.
S. L.
Simply excellent.. food was delicious, extremely well presented and the atmosphere was perfect. Great friendly staff. Will be back again!
D. M.
Amazing service, Lesley went above and beyond. The food was incredible and loved the fact Lesley would recommend dishes really made you feel like the staff were proud of the food served. Can't wait to return!
C. W.
We've popped in here before for a quick lunch on a Saturday and it was clearly very popular! Paid another visit last night on the way back from picking up a trailer (for yet another BodgeWerks project). We were given a friendly greeting by Sarah as we walked in the door, and she promptly took a drink order and showed us to a table. The place wasn't as busy as our last visit but still clearly well supported, which speaks volumes. Drinks and food arrived promptly, and Sarah made sure we were well cared for. Good food, good drinks (try the hot chocolate!) and top service. Highly recommended, but probably best to book in advance to avoid disappointment!
C. T.
Lovely Setting sitting outside on Easter Sunday. Food was amazing and staff couldn't have been friendlier.
E. W.
Best pub for miles. A definite favourite- great staff, great atmosphere and food! Super dog friendly too and a gorgeous garden!
A. J.
Lovely rural setting (original home of the World Conker Championship). Super pub, nice beer, great service, fabulous Sunday lunch (Black pudding scotch egg as a starter!). Worth finding.
J. S.
After a very disappointing reservation at The George in Oundle we sought a nicer establishment locally and we were not disappointed. The staff kindly gave us a very last minute reservation on a Saturday evening. Then you once again!
We were welcomed warmly by several of the staff members and offered a choice of tables. The pub is immaculately presented throughout and beautifully situated.
The service was fantastic and the staff were amusing and couldn't do enough to help. Our meals were served swiftly and cooked to perfection. Should we return to oundle or the surrounding areas we would be sure to detour in order to return for a meal or a drink.
The only minor gripe would be the gents toilets. They were very unpleasant, dirty and somewhat dated in comparison to the overall look and vibe of the establishment.
None the less- I would highly recommend to any one looking for a high quality country pub/ restaurant with fantastic service
K. L.
Food was nice, small place orders can take a while so not ideal if you’re there for lunch and have limited time, been a few times and they have gotten the orders wrong.
Bit on the pricey side for the level of service and the wrong order.
M. F.
Good friendly service. Good flavours, ample portions, but the steak was sinuous and tough. Only half the steak was edible. I will not be returning to this venue to eat. It would be better to make portions slightly smaller and lower the prices.
J. B.
Food was rushed so slightly undercooked, bacon was sloppy on the burger and because not cooked properly and very fatty caused me to choke! And why serve a greasy burger on newspaper? Also a very loud table of people felt they had to shout every conversation across the table at each other making it impossible to hold a conversation ourselves! When your either a person who has sensory overload it's a difficult situation and not a relaxing atmosphere to lunch!
Sad as it appears to be a lovely location! Staff tried their best
T. A.
Superb venue great setting. Excellent. Sat outside under the trees. Is there anything more perfect in life than this? Perfect service. Good beer. Best pub for many many mikes around. Never been before but will go back time and again.
R. J.
A great pub, good range of beers, ales and wines. Home cooked food. Excellent country pub. Well worth a visit.
W. P.
Lovely food, friendly staff. Sat in the sunny courtyard. We will return.
A. M.
My wife and 5 friends spent last weekend at the nearby estate and had a fabulous time at the chequered skipper, for drinks one day and Sunday lunch the next. The food is excellent with first class service,a special mention to Lesley for making their celebration even more memorable.Would highly recommend a visit.
J. J.
Revisited after many years of being off our radar. Updated modern decor and very good food from menu and a specials board.
Great background live guitar music.
Service good and staff pleasant and friendly.
B. B.
The staff are so so lovely....we called in after a long dog walked and due to having to be very careful what a gastric issue asked for a huge salad to be shared between three of us....it was so refreshing to see such "can do " attitude....we were presented with a fabulous feta salad....Great place to eat, visit and enjoy.
Thank you so much.
B. M.
What superb food. We ate here today sitting on the tables outside on the village green, amonst the conker trees and peacocks. All the food we had was top quality and really tasty. There was a Spanish twist to the menu and it was really delicious. The pub itself looked refurbished and the setting is in a proper village only a short drive from Oundle or better still an easy walk along the River Nene. I can not recommend this place more highly we will be back when visiting our family again. Thank you.
k. A.
Four of us went for a meal at chequered skipper
3 meals were very good , however mine was not
Fish was sprinkled with salt,? and chips were Very greasy, not triple cooked ! The chaps did say more VEG would be nice , just 2 soft stem broccoli was it !
We waited 1 hour and 20 mins for meal , we were given complimentary drinks , pub was busy
And had chap playing guitar which was lovely,
The biggest gripe I have is the pub was Very COLD. eating with your coat on is not acceptable
Unfortunately we won't be going back .🥶
Curtains would help, or internal glazing.
K. P.
Food and service excellent. Loud jazz band playing during our Sunday lunch visit which meant it was impossible to hold a conversation at the table.
The band was good - just too loud!
On future visits I will ask to be seated away from this if we want to speak with people on our table during our meal.
R. H.
Very nice English pub restaurant. Food excellent. Nice people, lovely service. Couldn't have been better. Fruit merengue thingy was perfect, extremely taste and a sharable size.
G. H.
Lovely location and beautiful pub. Good beer and food.
S. W.
Lovely food, lovely food and great live music.
T. A.
An OK meal but very expensive not the best value for money
S. K.
Very good food. Staff patient and helpful. Beautiful settings.
S. G.
The staff there were amazing, the food was delicious, the place itself is a wonderful setting and I couldn't have asked for a better experience, thankyou xx
S. H.
Fantastic Sunday roast, definitely recommend. Every thing was delicious.
C. M.
Nice country pub situated on the Green in Ashton ... Peacocks roaming free which is a sight lol... Thatched local community would of given 5* but not too much choice of draft ale. However good service and good price .. Recommend
T. C.
Eaten there twice now as well the stop off point on our bike ride and each experience was extremely good. Great Sunday roast in a fabulous location. Staff couldn't do enough and look out for the beautiful peacocks.
B. O.
Excellent location in a quite conservation area, lovely food and staff. Wonderful service. The food had excellent flavours and prepared on the premesis rather than in a factory, of course the price reflects this but its not too expensive and not pretentious. Thoroughly recommended for a meal or drink. We sat outside on a lovely warm evening but decor inside is of a high standard too. They can accommodate special functions and parties or a romantic meal for 2. Advance reservations at busy times recommended.
K. G.
Great food - probably the best rib of beef I've had outside my own kitchen! Friendly, competent staff and a lovely space. It lost a star because the dining chairs are not comfortable and the cutlery is cheap, which is a great shame: it jarred with the rest of the presentation. The pub also lacked some of the atmosphere and ambience one usually encounters in a country pub. If you don't mind that though, the food alone makes a visit worthwhile.
K. P.
Food was beautiful and the staff were so warm and friendly. Gorgeous setting. Perfect afternoon
w.
Staff: 5 Star, even got the 3 pour Guinness to perfection. Spotlessly clean toilets , great location and excellent food menus.
R. M.
Absolutely superb. We had a private function here and the staff were tremendous. The owners went out of their way to ensure delivery of a superb event. The food was amazing. Chef went with an italian cusine, which was not an easy task beens as the family are Italian but the food passed with flying colours. The chef is very talented. Thanks for making my wife's special party a truly memorable one 👍
D. C.
Very welcoming staff, great service and fantastic food. The portions are generous, the beer selection is decent and I'm always well looked after. Can't rate this place enough after my last few visits 🙂
D. W.
Shown to a atmospheric - less room (like a common room hall) & seated. Good was only average I'm afraid with starters (medley of 3 - all looking bland & in appealing). Sunday roast beef served with tasteless beef, the smallest of roast square potatoes & veg). Overall service was pleasing but slow. Shame really as it used to serve fantastic food. Won't be going back anytime soon 😟
k. C.
Came here for lunch with my parents and it was lovely. It was nice and clean and has been recently refurbished and the tables are nicely spaced out. The food was absolutely delicious will definitely be eating here again.
k. q.
Greeted with a smile and some semblance of normality in amongst a ridiculous world of fear.
Very much appreciated to say the least.
Food & customer service was amazing.
Can't recommend enough.
👏👏👏
J. B.
Food is good but expensive and portions far too small.
R. B.
Great meal had on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Sea Bass (x 2) for mains, sour Bakewell and the cheesecake for dessert. Great quality at a fair price. Attentive, friendly and polite staff operating a pub/restaurant in a quiet village location.
S. W.
We visited this establishment on a beautifully sunny afternoon today and not only was this place completely lovely, the setting was an additional bonus. The staff and owner were a delight to talk to and the food and service was spot on. Thank you for such a lovely time. Definately will return.
P. M.
This is one hum-dinger of a beautiful village and there in the heart of Ashton is The Chequered Skipper.
We went along with some friends for a pub lunch and we were all quite satisfied with what we ate. I had a pint of an excellent draught beer whilst the others had glasses of wine about which the charges for an average white wine were on the steep end of high!
The food was good, however we all felt there could have been a lot more imagination with the bar menu and all felt this establishment ought to consider having a frequently changing specials menu and fewer pizzas.
The only thing that ruined our visit was a young and noisily screaming child somewhere else in the bar!!!
D. C.
Had an excellent meal of beer battered Haddock and thick cut chips. Thoroughly delicious with excellent service. The Westons cider on tap is a nice bonus. Highly recommended.
L. K.
One of our favourite places to eat - great food and atmosphere in the prettiest location. Had a fantastic roast there last night very generous with the meat, great value for money. See you soon.
J. P.
Great place to meet with the family. Good menu choices at lunchtime, really enjoyed ambiance, great service
J. W.
Great food and good beer. Very full, understandably do, and service was a little slow at times. Not criticising - I get the challenges.
V. d. M.
This is a sensational pub. Beautiful location and great food.
K.
Lovely rural pub with fabulous food and drinks and friendly and welcoming owners and staff. Sunny beer garden and terrace for drinks and eating. Highly recommend.
S. M.
Very nice place, once again, with my grandson and his girlfriend we just stopped off for a couple of drinks. This is a place I would visit again. I do believe that they do very nice meals. Try it out.
J. L.
Very nice staff and service lovely decor starters interesting and drinks not expensive lots of parking.
K. K.
Amazing food, just absolutely amazing, such a quaint little pub too, especially on a cold night it sits like a beacon of warm in the middle of the green 😊
J. T.
Amazing food, even with a child's portion I was full. Great music too made for a lovely afternoon.
S. H.
Saturday 23rd Sept we held our daughter and son-in-laws wedding reception at the Chequered Skipper. Ian and his team made the day flow like clockwork. All our guests commented on the high quality of food. The whole day at Ashton was so special as it reflected the nature of Joe and Danielle.
I highly recommend the Chequered Skipper for any event you may have coming up.
C. L.
I cannot recommend the Chequered Skipper highly enough! We have visited several times over the last few months and each time has just been exception, the staff and menus are just exceptional.
G. B.
Popped in for dinner after work. Slightly confusing as there was a 'bar' menu, a 'specials' piece of paper and a 'deals' piece of paper - but we weren't directed to any of these. Despite the three menus, we were slightly disappointed by the food selection. Bar/waiting staff were very polite and cheerful. We started with olives, which I think had seen better days. I chose Scallop and Tiger Prawn Linguine - it was very tasty, but would be better described as simply Tiger Prawn Linguine, as there were only 3 very small scallops in the dish, which weren't suited to my taste, and to be honest, you didn't miss them. My partner had a pizza, which he said was "ok, but some of the chicken could have been better" Our overall opinion was just that - that it was 'Ok'
P. a. S. H.
Lovely in all respects especially the quiet location. Great walks nearby.
Lovely beer and wine. Try the truely amazing Pizza's. I visit once or twice a month.
A. N.
Nice setting scenic, large premises, looks like good selection of beers. Food ok-good well presented but limited menu especially if you have vegetations. Recommended
A. G.
Loved this place there roat beef was so yummuy. Loved the menu book and the aprons the waiter and waiteress was wearing.
P. I.
Great food and a beautiful setting help make this village pub stand out. Definitely worth the trip out for a visit. The specialty deal nights are good value too
K. V.
I can not fault this place, the staff are so friendly and the food is perfect. They cook the best Calamari rings I have ever tasted!
Would highly recommend this place and in fact I am going back there this week as it was so good!
M. D.
Fantastic food. Lovely friendly staff. Gorgeous place. Highly recommend.
N. T.
Food was great, atmosphere was nice and service was excellent. Courgette fritters were very good, looking forward to trying a Sunday lunch here!
J.
Wonderful surrounding..very efficient staff with a well presented tasty meal 5 star ..
C. W.
Tuesday lunchtime booked for a group of 22 walkers. Workers had drilled through a power cable and therefore no electricity. The staff immediately organised alternative cooking methods using BBQ and we were transferred to the "Green Room". The pizza was the only option on the menu that had to be changed due to the cooking medium. ALL 22 OF US WERE CATERED FOR BY POLITE AND FRIENDLY STAFF - TERRIFIC SERVICE - WONDERFUL FOOD - AMAZING TURNAROUND FOR WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER. THANK YOU.
A. D.
Had a lovely meal here last week. Lovely village pub with a good atmosphere. Food and service top class.
S.
Good food, good selection of beers, and friendly staff. They forgot my order initially (was part of a group), but made up for it by not charging for my ale.
M. R.
Fantastic pub and venue I have been here for 2 weddings and they were both brilliant, the food is very good and it's in a really nice country area. They also have a resident peacok.

K. M.
Really great food and service. Relaxing and stylish. I highly recommend this lovely country pub.
A. S.
Wasn't really impressed. Especially not with the starter. Main was OK but salad came as the side was very plain. Desert was good. Staff were friendly and helpful but wouldn't go back again.
J. F.
We had a lovely meal and looked after really well. A very pleasant evening all round.
M. V.
Beautiful place, and a great destination for a day of rambling on the footpaths. The food is just all right. The staff and patrons can seem a bit snobby.
T. H.
We went on boxing day, the food whilst a bit slow was brilliant and the service was quick, was full of people but a really nice atmosphere and didn't feel left at our table for too long.
C. H.
Had a Sunday roast, it was lovely. The service of all staff was outstanding, they go above and beyond their duties. Thank you.

Great service and selection of drinks and food. I engaged the staff about the local drinks they stocked and they were knowledgeable and engaged willingly about their stock. Great fun place.

Good ales - 'Proper Job' for example. Nice to sit outside on the green - weather permitting :-)
Well worth a visit...
I. C.

Absolutely fabulous Christmas Day Lunch. Well done to ALL the staff you provided my wife and I with an all time treat, your service was excellent and the food top dollar, the roast beef just melted in your mouth. Hope you all had a great day after you got rid of us lot. Happy New Year from Paul & Sandy.
