M. C.Absolutely spot on, nice setting (if not a little rustic). Eight of us went for the set menu and we couldn't fault a dish. Crispy where it should be crispy, succulent where it should tender and fantastic value at 16.50 a head.
V. M.The Grain Barge is a lovely location in the centre of Peterborough for a tasty Chinese meal. As you can tell from the name the restaurant is in a converted barge which is permanently moored on the River Nene.
The restaurant comfortably seats around 50 guests on tables of 2-4 seats but tables could be pushed together for larger parties. The menu is standard for a Chinese restaurant with all the usual favourites. Upon being seated there was a plate of prawn crackers to enjoy. We opted to share the set menu priced at £16.50 per head. For this we had a sharing platter of mixed starters which included crispy seaweed, ribs, satay chicken, filled dumplings and prawn toast with a whole prawn on top. Next there was half a duck to share with the usual accompaniments. Then there were three main dishes, one of beef, one of chicken and a third of pork together with egg fried rice. By the end of all that we were both quite full so opted against any dessert. I had two pints of Carlsberg and my wife had a large diet coke. All together the bill came to £43 which seemed reasonable to me.
The service was excellent with the staff being attentive but not overly so. We dined at 5pm on a Saturday evening and were the first customers of the evening but by the time we were leaving around 6.15 the restaurant was over half full. We had booked a reservation beforehand.
Based on my experience I would heartily recommend this restaurant and look forward to being able to return again.

I. H.Visited with 4 friends. We had the set menu. Service was fantastic each course was served with enough time in between to chat and drink. Staff were friendly and helpful and supplied chopsticks so I could..have a go! Delicious food and plentiful, and wow what great value. I haven't visited for over 20 years and The Grain Barge still retains all of its charm. Will be going back again soon. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are a novice with this type of cuisine as the staff will help you decide. A perfect choice for a birthday meal!

J. S.I'm going to lead with the fact that you will be hard pressed to find another chinese sit-down restaurant in the area which offers similiar value for money. We had the set menu, a 4 course dinner which at £14-something a-head would be difficult to argue about under most circumstances. The portions are huge and decently cooked, if still rather a lot greasier than I prefer. Very good service; friendly and attentive without being overbearing.
The space has its charm, but feels a little claustrophobic on busy nights, and tge decor is perhaps just a little outdated.

J. W.Delicious food. Helpful, attentive staff. Our temperatures were taken as we entered. The Barge and the interior decor are not plush, but don't let that put you off, the food is why you go to a restaurant, isn't it? And the food here is delicious and plentiful. We had the Set Menu and couldn't finish it all! Parking close by, it is pay and display, but currently only £2.50 for the whole evening.
j.I had a delicious meal in The Grain Barge. It seemed that people who booked in advance were up on deck level and those who turned up on the off chance of finding a space or those with small children were below deck. This may not be the case, but was how it seemed to me. I was below deck as had turned up to chance it. I didn't mind at all as the below deck area was well decorated, well lit and the food and service were good. I couldn't eat all that I'd ordered and so took it home in a take away tub. If you want to be up on deck level to look out at the water, I'd suggest phoning first to make sure you can have a deck level table.

The experience lived up to the hype! We received friendly, welcoming service and did not feel rushed at any point. We choose the set menu and the waitress explained what that included. One of the group does not like nuts (not an allergy) and they offered to serve the satay sauce in a separate dish so that the chicken could be eaten without sauce. The food was delicious and we felt comfortably full at the end of the meal. We will definitely return to The Grain Barge next time we are in Peterborough.

C. F.Really excellent Chinese food in a unique environment. My kids absolutely love going here and are very excited whenever they go. The staff are great and will make fun child friendly chop sticks for the kids. Sitting downstairs is a bit more atmospheric than upstairs, but upstairs you do get the view of the river which is lovely in the summer. They can get very busy, so booking is advisable, but if you're early and can eat quickly, it's worth asking if they can fit you in. Great for pre-theatre dinner if you have tickets at the Key theatre.

N. P.My first time visiting The Grain Barge and it was an ok experience. I will openly admit that I'm not familiar with Chinese cuisine and I was hoping the menu would be of some assistance, I was proved so wrong! The menu has a vast array of dishes listed including a selection of vegetarian dishes, but the menu lacked an brief explanation of the dishes and what they contained, which could be a real issue if you had particular dietary requirements.
The members of staff were pleasant and our meals (well nearly all our meals) arrived quite quickly. The waitress got my order wrong and served me a prawn dish instead of the fish I had ordered, the waitress was very apologetic.
My Fish Fillet in Mandarin sauce, what can I say...it was mediocre, I was unable to taste the fish (or identify what type of fish I was eating) due to the very sweet taste of the mandarin sauce.
It was a nice atmosphere on the barge and you don't feel like you are being rushed. There was no breakdown of the bill; just a figure handwritten on a piece of paper for myself and my colleagues.
I'm glad I have experienced it, but it was not to my taste. The Grain Barge was recommended by fellow work colleagues who raved about the food, so you may wish to pay a visit yourself and experience dining on a docked/moored barge if you have not already done so.

L. E.My family and I had a lovely meal in this quaint wee barge yesterday evening. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were very friendly and so attentive. It is advisable to book especially on a Friday and Saturday night. We thoroughly recommend The Grain Barge for 5* food and hope to visit again some day.
M. D.It’s a great atmosphere in here and the service is superlative, however the food isn’t top notch. It’s totally edible, mind you (& that’s from omnivores whom I know as well as the vegetarian selection). Plus they are very good at getting everything for each course on the table at the same time. You’ll not regret a night out here!

We went for the set menu for two and we couldn't manage to eat it all. We were upstairs.
