The food was great, it came quickly to the table and the portion sizes were decent. It was very busy when me and my partner ate here and found that the service was quite slow considering how fast we got our food. The drinks menu for someone thst doesn't drink alcohol was very basic. Overall i would say that the food was good enough to make me come back.

Went to a restaurant which was fully booked they recommended Kuku, first thoughts was how lovely the restaurant looked and how friendly the staff was. Being absolute beginners which sushi the gentlemen who took us to are table did ask what are experience of sushi was and because we had none a lovely gentlemen called Francis promptly came to us and gave us some very helpful information and advised us on things he felt would enjoy and telling him are likes, Francis continued coming back to us and continued helping us which really made are sushi experience a good one. Thank you Francis for all your help.

A very modern restaurant with a good choice of fusion Japanese cuisine. The taste of sushi and sashimi was so fresh! The “volcano” sushi rolls were delicious. The main sea-beams were so good, pair with white rice was awesome.

Over all the experience was ok there was nobody to greet us at front of house when we arrived, the barman had to stop what he was doing to seat us, altho once we where seated the staff great. The sushi was presented well and tasty but small portion sizes ment it was over priced compared to other sushi restaurants, the food came out in no real order the tempura vegetables and edamame beans where so hot that they need time to cool down before you could eat them without risking of melting your face off which ment the starters where still on the table when the mains started arriving the vibe was good but the music was so loud that you had to raise your voice to be heard I wouldn't hurry back here as there are much better sushi restaurants in Plymouth

Kuku is a great place to try sushi. A warning in advance, the sushi portions are very small, however this is expected for a sushi restaurant. Prices are very expensive. Certain members of staff were not great, however the female member who attended us was very helpful, but did not catch her name. However I highly recommend the food here, it is delicious. We will be coming again :)

It’s gorgeous on the inside perfect for a date night. Had cocktails, wine and the taster menu and it only came to £44 pp which is incredible value for money with the amount of food that we got. Would definitely recommend getting the taster menu if with a group, however some of the dishes were a bit salty overall they were delicious

I had a very good experience going there, the food was great. I had one of the taster menus and it had an extremely wide range of foods to try and was good value for money. The food itself was very good and had some surprisingly high-quality ingredients such as caviar. However, there was an unusually long wait about 30-45mins to be seated but they apologised and gave us a free beef dish which we appreciated a lot.

Very good Japrnese food, lovely restaurant, great choice but somewhat overpriced really. Fillet steak with wasabi, served with vegetables and boiled rice was £29. Steak was served sliced and was lovely but no real taste of any wasabi so had to ask for some separately. Steak just served on a small bed of lettuce/cabbage? but was expecting and hoping for some other vegetable accompaniment for that price! The teriyaki salmon was good too but all the flavour/marinade was on the skin so once that was removed, could have done with more teriyaki taste. Was my birthday when we visited and wish we'd said so beforehand as two other tables had people with birthdays too that day and each was presented with a cake/dessert with candles! Disappointed I missed out but good to know if you're celebrating a birthday - tell them when booking. Overall very nice but need a hefty wallet!

Have been here a few times, the food is fresh and delicious. Dispit calling a little last min on a Saturday with no tables left I still got seated at the sushi bar, which I was more than happy about. Great service left feeling full and happy. I had to start a Tataki mixed (salmon, tuna + sea bass ponzu) and Makimono samurai maki (sea bass and softshell crab roll). For my main I had the Kano special - Crispy duck in miso soy sauce with teppan veg and sticky rice. With a couple of cocktails called plumb and rose they were perfect to wash everything down.

Wow, the food here is amazing! I'd never had Japanese before but will definitely have it again. The waiter explained everything on the menu and made some really great recommendations. My friends and I shared a mixed plater, one appetizer and two mains and everything was superbly presented and delicious. We ate the lot but didn't have room for dessert. It was a Tuesday evening and the place was packed so you must book a table to avoid disappointment.

Wow this place is fantastic! We had the vegan tasting menu, which did not disappoint!! Only downside was that a few of the dishes in this particular tasting menu had avocado in, which is quite filling and it would've been nice for a bit more variety with the vegetables. Other than that, I had a great time and would 100% return (I need more of that sushi 😍)

Incredible Japanese food in Plymouth city centre. So much choice from classic sashimi, hibachi, sushi rolls etc. We got the Kuku Maki, Ryu sushi and bbq Sea bream. I dont think you can got far wrong with whatever you choose. Waiter was helpful and made great recommendations. Will definitely be going again.

Legitimately the best restaurant Japanese around in the south west. Doesn’t matter what I get I end up liking it. Now a regular here! Highly recommend, prepared to pay a bit but it’s worth every penny.

*****FIRST 5 STAR REVIEW***** By far, the very best sushi I have every had. It would an injustice to try and describe the various flavours, you just have to visit the place and try it for yourself. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the ambiance was brilliant. I'll definitely visit again when back in Plymouth.

An amazing restaurant! Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was amazing, they advise you pick plates to share but you can have your own if you'd prefer. Great for dietary requirements; we had someone gluten and dairy free and vegetarian. Great variety of dishes, the menu can be overwhelming but waiters talked us through it. I highly recommend the tempura pepper sushi and the banana spring roll- both dishes I've never had anything like before. It is a more expensive restaurant but worth the wait for fresh food. We did have to wait a while for mains but this may have been because we all requested individual mains and the restaurant was packed. The toilet cubicles seemed a little neglected compared to the rest of the restaurant too. I would definitely go back when I'm next visiting!

First time at a sushi restaurant and normally play it a bit safe but went for it here - Christian in particular guided us through a couple of dishes which were absolutely delicious. I'd like to give Kuku 6 stars. Quite possibly the best meal I've ever had. The waiter forgot our wine but he was super apologetic when he noticed, the service was otherwise good. The meal was pricey, I could only afford to visit for special occasions but oh my god, the food was worth every penny. They don't have chefs, they have magicians.

Wonderful food, the portion size can vary quite substantially from chef to chef. I order the same every time and both portions of sushi were tiny compared to last time. Barely any soft shell crab in the sushi this time.

We went here last night for my daughters birthday. We had never been to a Japenese restaurant before so it was a completely new experience for us. Unsure of the dishes we asked our waiter, the wonderful Alexandro, for his advice. He explained the menu and recommended which dishes to order after determining our tastes. Lovely food & good service. Food was very fluid in arriving. The only draw back being the acoustics of the restaurant, meaning a large group being very loud is deafening. So not necessarily a calm dining experience. But overall the food was so good, all of our table would make a return visit.

There were 4 of us and we had taster menu started excellent then not so good Katsu curry very salty then couple of average dishes and 3 dishes to finish 1 being boiled rice think this should have come with the curry to be honest. We had deep fried bass very small farmed fish and tasteless. No draught beer and they ran out of the bottles we were drinking and swapped to Peroni, not all bad. 7 or 8 times we have been now and like most restaraunts they struggle to keep up their standards and that is what it is all about.

This a Japanese restaurant just outside the barbican area of Plymouth. I had the tuna sashimi and the Tokyo seabass. Both were delicious. The seabass had an unusual creamy sauce which complemented the fish very well. Service was excellent too. Happy to recommend.

A lovely, if potentially intimidating menu. Especially if you were unfamiliar with Japanese food. But the staff are very attentive and helpful and happy to discuss. A decent selection of wines and sake too. Surpringly affordable. Six of us were truly full after a huge selection of dishes including loads of Sushi, sashimi chicken noodles and black cod, two glasses of Sake each and two bottles of Provencal Rose and the bill was under £60/head. Nice big spacious tables and proper comfortable chairs in a high ceiling airy environment.

We had an absolutely fantastic meal here last night. I could not recommend the restaurant more highly. Fun bar with good cocktails, really attentive staff, nice decor (with good lighting - my normal bugbear!) and most importantly fantastic food. We opted to have sushi and sashimi starters followed by a fish main, but you could have easily also dined by having small plates to share. All of the dishes were great. Well done team Kuku! Brilliant food and service. Only reason for loosing a star is the men's toilet is also the baby changing room/disabled which causes queues to men's toilets. I would recommend unisex cubicles instead of ladies toilets

I phoned up at 7.30 asking if they would still serve food at 10.15 as I had been to the theatre with my daughter who’s birthday it was. He explained they normal stop ordering at 9.45 however will do it no problem ! Well when we turned up we were the only customers there, however the service was incredible explaining all the dishes and recommendations for what dishes I could try as a vegan. We were not let down, the food arrived quickly beatifilully presented and tasted gorgeous! You made my daughters birthday a unforgettable one. It is a restaurant I highly recommend, for me personally only one i could afford on special occasions. However was worth every penny !

All I can say is “wow”. Stunning setting, the best Japanese food I have ever eaten, and the most attentive and friendly servers I have ever experienced. Cannot recommend those restaurant enough. The bartenders also have a great knowledge of cocktails, so I suggest sticking around for a post meal drink at the bar.

This is a great place to enjoy Japanese food. Be careful when ordering, though as it is not always clear what is a starter or a main course. For example, I ordered the Kuku salad, thinking it was a starter, but out comes the biggest plate of salad I have ever seen. On top of that I had ordered spare ribs. I could not for the life of me finish both of them! The portions are really generous and the food superb! Definitely will go back!

Oh. My. Goodness. Just go and eat, we'll talk later 😄 4 of us had the sushi tasting menu, and it was such a journey, with so many flavours, and styles, and generously portioned. In hindsight I probably wouldn't have bothered with the yuzu sake, but everything else was high quality, tasty, and more importantly fitted the bill; we were out celebrating a special occasion. The food matched the mood. Crazy value for money, stylish setting; chic-traditional I'd call it. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Plymouth.

Too small portions and price is too high comparing to the quality or quantity. The duck maki was amazing however, the other dishes leave to wonder. It just feels like you charged more for the decor. Service was good and helpful, however very slow with only 1 employee trying to attend to everybody. There are other better places in Plymouth that serve japanese food at same price. PS: After looking at other dishes pictures I noticed that the dishes I was served (the same ones in pictures) were less arranged and sizes were so much smaller. Also, our sushi was "squashed" with hardly any shape which isn't something I expect from a restaurant where you pay £10 for 6 tiny sushi rolls. For example the lava cake I was served hardly was decorated with 1 strawberry and 1 raspberry sliced and put right next to it and a normal scoop of ice cream, meanwhile the other plates I seen were nicely decorated. Sounds like their service either deteriorated or they have different chefs (if they do, I would expect they serve same quality). The group table next to me didn't seem very happy either with their rice pudding, rice being undercooked.

The food was well served and beautifully presented and fresh. They do let you know that as it is Japanese style dining things come out as and when. However as a veggie I was ill advised regarding the amount to order. What they considered a 'small' portion was much larger- so the serving sizes are generous. Then on my table all of my dishes came before anyone else's...this was highlighted by our waiter who then actively teased me about the amount I had and encouraged our party to laugh at me too. Considering he had suggested I order this much I felt especially offenfed at his behaviour. And actually even though they stated it would come out in bits (Japanese style), if you order what they class as a 'main' on the menu, it does come out after the other things. Most people in our group had a 'main' and so could eat together whilst I sat with barely anything left. The food was fresh, well flavoured, a good portion and delicious...however they let themselves down with clunky service and belittling me at the table. It is also quite pricey, not expensive but slightly more than you expect to pay.

I have eaten Japanese food for nearly 30 years in many countries and in my opinion their twist of a Japanese delicacy with a KuKu fusion was outstanding, a tasting experience is the only way I can describe it. Not only were the staff friendly and welcoming they had good social distancing measures in place with antibacterial gel on hand and it was very clean. The first waiter we had was quite rude and the rice on the only rice-based Maki dish we had was hard along one side...perhaps made and left around for a while? We then paid and walked out to the bar and i remembered about the food...asked about it, then the girl who took the plates said "there wasnt anything there, the plates were empty". I could not believe what i was hearing. The owner (Chris) was lovely and did offer to get another made but i just wanted to leave by this point. I do not appreciate being called a liar and by heck i have a temper on me so unfortunately my only option was to walk away. Its was quite obvious what she had done because a different waitress cleared the rest of the plates after she took the ones with the food on. I wont be going back anytime soon. Battered peppers, no. If it hadnt been for the good experience previously, i would have given 2 stars. PS bright orange, not your colour.
