Reviews of Schoolhouse Devon
T. A.
Lovely time at the beach, great for a swim and some rock pooling, then after a walk back up the hill we sat outside for a coffee. I can’t rate anything other than the surroundings as we didn’t eat nor go indoors but it was a lovely outside area. There are toilets too so be sure to use them before heading to the beach or on the coastal walk.
1st May-1st September No Dogs allowed on beach (rules at time of visit).
A. D.
Really enjoyed a few visits here, whilst staying on the Flete estate. Great bream burger, carrot cake, coffee & drinks. High performance from a tiny place 👍super friendly staff.
B. H.
After playing with the dogs in the sand on the Erme estuary we ventured back to the car park and the Schoolhouse. Lunch was meant to be a light snack of antipasti and calamari with a very nice red but the calamari was so good that seconds were essential.
k. E.
Excellent place! Lovely interior, incredible staff and amazing food. Can’t wait for the BBQ nights in summer!
L. M.
The staff are so welcoming and friendly here. The food is fantastic and the setting is great too! You can book online easily, which is always a bonus! Can't wait to go back!
J. M.
I have been to the School House several times when I visit my daughter in Plymouth. We walk the dogs on the beach and after come to eat here. Always super friendly and the food is always excellent. Tonight there was a bbq with live music which was superb . Definitely can’t wait for my next visit
I. L.
Excellent food and we thought the prices were very reasonable for the quality and amount of food you get. The coronation monkfish was delicious and quite generous for an appetiser. Service was good - although a bit more hectic when it gets busy. Dog friendly outdoor seating with plenty of benches. Good rest stop before/after the beach.
C.
Small inside, but larger outside. Had a wonderful pizza with a really authentic taste. Caught a glimpse of the sea through the trees when I was eating. I'd like it here in the spring, autumn and winter months but I guess it will be heaving in the summer months.
T. C.
Lovely little spot before the beautiful Mothecombe beach.
K.
Food was delicious, very friendly staff, dog-friendly and a beautiful aesthetic with very cool decor. Prices were quite expensive but lovely for a treat
K. H.
Very expensive. Even have the audacity to charge 50p extra for making a drink with Oaty milk ( for a small child with severe allergies) and 50p extra fo a DECAFFEINATED coffee for a very pregnant lady!!!! Come on guys!!!!
J. K.
A good place to start a day on the beach. We just had coffee and a slice of coffee and walnut cake. The best we'd ever tasted! Rather expensive but hey, location location and location. A great place to chill out. Very limited access to beach for people with disabilities or wheel chairs etc.
T. H.
What a great find! Super food, chilled atmosphere and next to miles of beach! How fabulous!
P. M.
Lovely chilled out place to relax, drink, and eat great food. Chicken Ceasar very nice with a rich sauce and quite large so only for large appetites!
R. M.
Sadly really reduced in quality in favour of quantity
You used to be able to have excellent quality meals here but now the menu is plain pizza and burger options with limited vegetarian options. It’s still a lovely place to visit with friendly staff but it’s not the great food destination it used to bd sadly.
A. G.
Really friendly staff. Plenty of nearby parking costing £5 for all day, which is reasonable for coastal. The venue is really quirky, plenty of seating and liked the reclaimed furniture inside and out. We had full english breakfast on August bank holiday, which was very good and loved my large pot of tea :P
C. P.
I love this place! I have only been a couple of times but always happy to go when suggested. You can sit inside, or like us, sit outside and enjoy the relaxed service and setting. Choices of food is limited but great quality. The perfect place to while away an hour before or after visiting the beach
j. r.
Nice food and lovely setting.
Unfortunately somebody has had the bright idea of adding a 12.5% service charge to every bill, without any prior warning, meaning you have to either pay it, or request it to be removed.
Great way to annoy your customers! Its MY choice to add a tip!
S. T.
Love it. Rustic yet warming and homely. Great chips for a snack.
T. C.
Had a really good lunch here after walking along the beach with the dogs.
I had the Italian BLT which was tasty but I felt was pricier than it should’ve been for the amount of pancetta it had. We had both the cheesy skinny fries and the regular skinny fries which were very good so would definitely recommend.
The service was good and attentive and I really liked the interior design of the place.
W. c.
Price not great but your in a beauty spot so what do you expect. Coffee was good, kids enjoyed hot chocolate, the food I saw coming out looked and smelt good and nothing but empty plates were going back in. Sight nock on the mark as the person serving definitely was not keen to be there but the person that took over was much more pleasant.
P. B.
Excellent and friendly service, food really nice and a very creative and tasty menu. Only negative is that it's a tad pricey as a kind of beach side venue / eating place. Selling the local ice cream could be a great move for both businesses??
M. F.
Wonderful cafe out the way but within 5mins walk of an amazing secluded cove and beach.
Went for lunch and the choice (primarily fish based) was good with ample kids options. They were fantastic for allergies (prepping and cooking fish goujons separately).
Beautiful scenery, lots of outdoor space (if you want to sit inside you need to book as 3 tables), helpful and friendly staff with great good.
My only quibble.. Vegan options were one dish (they quote "we let our chefs imagination go wild") and it was tomato bruschetta. If this blip is sorted then this will now be one of my favourite places to go anywhere.
G.
This place is an absolute delight. Great for outdoor drinks and food on a sunny day. The owners have really put in the effort to make this a pleasant space both inside and out. A little pricey but worth it in my humble opinion. Can recommend the fried squid.
R. G.
Only stopped for coffee and cake. Both excellent. Service not an issue, we were the only customers! Looking at the food selection it looks expensive but depending on quality and cooking just about OK. The one regret, this place has significant history (the Watson sisters ran it for many years)nd whereas previous operators have reflected this there isn't a hint that I could see of this now.
R. P.
Very extortionate pricing for thier bbq, hence went hungry and had to do DIY bbq when back at cottage
B. B.
Excellent Saturday evening. Great music and bbq food was delicious
S. C.
Lovely kitsch cafe and excellent food. Giles Coren reckons the Schoohouse is the ''best [restaurant]in northern Europe'. No idea if he is right but the burger I had there was probably the best I have ever tasted.
P. P.
Excellent service and fabulous brunch, full of taste and well presented. Genuinely chilled place to eat out, nestled within perfect green rolling hills with a view of the sea.
D. S.
Lovely food large portions. Nice setting
M. D.
Always have amazing experiences at the school house, better in nice weather!
L. L.
Lovely spot to stop for a coffee and ice cream after a visit to Mothecombe Beach
C. H.
A beautiful place and the menu looks good and we shall return to dine in the evening one day. I only had a pasty but it was very good as are the chips. The drinks are mega exspensive though, like blatantly taking the Micky. £2.50 for a 330ml can of coke! I appreciate inflated prices due to location and convenience and that there's some recovery to be had from the lockdowna but £7.50 for three cans really did leave a bitter taste.
K. W.
£5 parking all day is good as it's near the beach, though a steep walk. Toilets are rough but do have essentials, loo roll, cold water and soap, so could be worse. Food terribly overpriced however, £2 for a tin of coke, wasn't even offered a glass, slice of cake 5.00, nice but just too expensive since it was handed to me in a bag and the topping was now smeared on the inside of said bag. Would visit car park again, but not go in for food or drinks.
E. K.
Love this place! This is what I would want if I owned a bar! Chilled music and lush vibes. Fab lunch with an interesting, unique menu. Best strawberry ice cream I've ever eaten courtesy of Salcombe dairy. Tonight was awesome live band and bbq! Don't miss this gem!
I. G.
Not that impressed. They nailed together a few old planks to create a shabby chic image so they can charge high prices for average food. On the plus side, friendly and efficient service and close to the outstanding beach at Mothecombe.
C. R.
Food was good! Even though Coronation makarel was delicious, I think a bit of effort of swapping the plain lettuce with a bit of a more mixed salad...would go long way. I somehow understand the pricey food as it's a quite secluded location...
L. W.
Stunning location, nice decor, delicious food and friendly staff. However as per other reviews prices are criminal and really let the place down. Went there at the weekend couldn't see a price for fries but as they had sold out of most things bought 3 portions only to find they were £5 each!!! For fries! Not even a large portion! Shame!
K. J.
Love the new pizza menu on a Friday night! Definitely recommend. Particularly lovely next to the wood burner outside even on a chilly November night.
A. H.
Visit was just prior to lock down. Highly recommended after a beach walk and swim in the mermaids pool. Dog friendly too. Food really good and didnt have to wait ages. The open fires a bonus on a chilly winters day
C. C.
This place is well worth the trip. Fabulous countryside getting there. Casual old place with great atmosphere & food. I have been many times but recently went for my 70th birthday with my family. Two sons shared a magnificent Seafood platter & loved it. The grand-kids were able to leave the table & go outside to run around & leave the grownups to enjoy food & drink.
My sons rang ahead & asked if the could make a cake for my birthday for us to have as dessert. As you can see they saw what I was wearing & iced the delicious cake to match. We then went down the path to the fabulous private beach, where we paddled & searched the rock pools.
Perfect as always.
M. M.
A really sweet little restaurant / bar that has been lovingly converted from an old schoolhouse. They specialise in seafood but offer a small selection of other dishes too.
J. W.
A fun place to eat good food, especially fish,a short walk from a beautiful beach.
K. J.
We had tea, coffee and cakes after visiting the beck and coast path. Service was as quick as it could be at a busy time and the cakes were delicious.
P. S.
£5 to park in their field is the cost of entry, but the Erme mouth is beautiful. Plan to visit around low tide for the best walks and biggest sandy area. There are primitive toilet facilities here.
R. B.
Called yesterday after paddleboard day on the beach. 7 of us had food which was absolutely delicious. I had the sizzling sausage with the cheese chips. Others had the banging prawns smoked mackerel and burgers all the good was fantastic. Service was first class. Thanks for making our day complete.
M. N.
Nice food, great staff even under pressure. Prices are outrageously high and the toilets are atrocious. They also sting you for £5 to park in a field.
G. L.
Went here with my wife and two young children. We found the service relaxed and friendly. The coffee and cakes were lovely and reasonably priced given the quality. There are three toilets and all are very clean given how muddy the day was. I see some complaints about having to pay for parking, however in mid January the parking for us was free. However please do be aware that paying for parking regardless of whether you eat or not is entirely the norm for beaches in Devon and Cornwall. At £4.50 the price is actually not bad, go to some beaches in North Devon and you will be spanked for £9!
R. C.
Nice venue, plenty of outside seating. Only had coffee but seemed to have a fairly extensive menu available.
m. g.
We visited on Good Friday. The tea and sandwiches were great. A bit pricey, and quite a long wait. Gluten free bread available and quite tasty. Setting was glorious.
J. P.
Great little restaurant placed ideally in the carpark at Mothecome Beach! Friendly staff and good selection of dishes - good for families and those with dogs. Ample outdoor seating, great on a sunny day!
N. P.
Great location which is off the beaten track in a cute quirky old school house. Food is delicious and service is excellent. Lovely to be able to chill outside on the sofas under blames and watch the fire. Dogs welcome outside and lovely atmosphere. We love it.
P. G.
Four of us had coronation monkfish, to say we were surprised to receive Battered monkfish smothered in curry sauce set on Just little gem lettuce leaves! Really! Monkfish is a very delicate flavour and certainly didn’t need to have this obliterated by butter And curry sauce. We were very disappointed
H. *.
Good atmosphere after a walk, expensive though
I. C.
I get the impression that this cafe is new. However, they have got off to an excellent start. Although prices are at the top end, the food is very good and well presented. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is excellent. Very close the wonderful Erme estuary and the lovely beaches. Fantastic flat white coffee.
A. C.
Whilst I have delivered Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream to this amazing venue, it is the first time I have eaten there. We had lunch which was well presented and professionally served by happy, knowledgeable staff.
The bill, including a 10% non-obligatory tip, totalled £36. Sitting in the sun eating amazing food in a Covid safe environment. Who could ask for more?
C. D.
Lovely spot for a bit of breakfast. Turned up on a whim whilst driving to Cornwall. Excellent friendly service, great food and two minutes walk from a beautiful beach.
E. D. R.
Nice coffee, but ordered a brownie which arrived very cold and dense, definitely had better especially for the price!
J. T.
Excellent walk followed by even better lunch with the family. Sea food was fantastic, fresh and tasty. The ginger cake with toffee sauce and local ice cream was also good with generous portion.
S. F.
Lovely home cooked food we had the house burger which today was chicken bacon and cheese it was very filling and the atmosphere was great you can park there all day for five pounds and then head to the beach which is a hidden gem all in all a perfect place to stop for a bit to eat top marks from us x
L. P.
Great ambience Dog friendly. Very popular after a stroll. Serve teas, coffee, hot chocolate as well as alcoholic drinks. We arrived too late for a sandwich but I'm sure they would have been lovely.
j. s.
I went into the Schoolhouse after a surf at Meadows Foot with my daughter on a cold and drizzly January Sunday. The Schoolhouse was buzzing with people eating, talking and having a good time. Service was good and our food was on the table within 10 minutes. We shared the best fish finger sandwich ever and an excellent chocolate brownie. Expensive. Yes. But you get what you pay for.
R. P.
Beautiful location and decent sized portion of chips. Lovely!
J. C.
Short stop for a walk. Lovely coffee and a beautiful spot.
m. n.
Just had the most fantastic lunch, Ben the waiter was so attentive and the food that 5 of all had was just perfect. The fish platter was well worth the money, infact we struggled to finish it, I would try for yourself before judging the reviews as we were thrilled with our food. Xxx
R. T.
Local surfing cow ice cream and a Salcombe beer with the family after a walk on the beach. Perfect.
J. B.
Finding this place at the end of a coastal hike is finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The best food I’ve had in south west England, excellent service, beautiful wines/cocktails and an unparalleled atmosphere (even more so when live music is playing).
T. S.
Lovely hot drinks after our dog walk on the beach. Sadly it started to rain so we had to eat our chips quick.... we will return
T. W.
Only popped in here to use the toilet at the start of a 3/4 marathon so sadly I cannot comment too much. But the food looked really good and the coffee smelled amazing !! The staff were very friendly and were not put out at all that all us noisy runners were taking over the place 🤣🤣
b. c.
Close to beach so summer prices for reasonable italian themed food in quirky old building suit surfer walker types well
M. M.
The best 4 prawns I've ever had. Just a bit spoilt by the £9.50 price tag plus £4 for some cheesy chips. I don't mind paying a bit extra in these trying times if that's what it is.
R. B.
Weather was deplorable but our fabulous waitress was Briony was a ray of sunshine and if you ever need an employee just come to me for a referee. And the food was great.
S. w.
Stopped at this cafe after a day walking the dogs. Some people had said they thought it was pricey but after eating and drinking we thought it was on a par price wise with most places we eat. The food was lovely the coffee great and the whole atmosphere nice. Staff could not do enough and the place is dog friendly. Liked the added touch iof " trivial pursuit" cards on table to pass the time, it made waiting fun. If nearby will remember this place.
M. S.
Great food and service, bang bang prawns and curry chowder excellent
M. T.
I was definitely immediately impressed by the decor
The fish stew was delicious.
I read the reviews and would agree the music was uninspiring and dominated the restaurant.
I will definitely come again not least for the beaches and walks
B. G.
Had a lovely evening last time we visited! Food was good again tonight but disappointed as they ran out of all meat choices, certain wines and puddings. It was also spoilt as we were cold as the door were left open. The service was inconsistent. A real shame, so much potential but not quite right tonight.
K. P.
My new favorite place. I almost don't want to post a review because the less people know about it the better! The food was amazing, especially the bang bang prawns, and the decor/service /music were all excellent.
S. B.
Food was lovely and the location is amazing.
G. W.
Good to see this old building put to good use & provides a pleasant atmosphere, which now stays open most of the year & this comes from someone who likes to surf the local beach. Free parking 🅿 out of season. Warning ⚠ take plenty of money..... ☺️
S. M.
Such a lovely little place. I ordered the sea bream but was told there was no sea bream left and the fish was mackerel now - even better! Good selection of drinks, friendly service. Park in the car park and pay for parking. We saw a long row of cars and parked behind them on the side of the road - completely missing the restricted parking from 1 April signs! And it was April 1, so we were the fools.
T. S.
Stopped in for coffee after a walk on the beach. Lovely location really cosy inside they don't serve food on Mondays or Tuesdays at this time of year. Cake was nice though.
A. L.
Excellent food. The staff went above and beyond for us, when he arrived a bit late! Had the Fishfinger club and a Cheese and Tomato toastier with chips. Food was absolutely lovely!
G. B.
Cool place, close to the beach. Great vibe, beer, pizza, burger !!! Loved it.
T. G.
Stopped here for a dry-out during a walk along the SW coastal path. The burgers and sandwiches were great. Sadly the bottled soft drinks were too expensive. Get a draught machine for an extra star? The staff were all really nice.
j. s. j.
Quirky little cafe 10 mins walk from Mothecombe Beach. Excellent food. Big portions. I had a BLT which was delicious. My wife had a sausage sandwich crammed full of snags. All in all very nice.
D. J.
Haven't been here since it was "improved", friendly service. 2 coffees and 2 pieces of cake, £13.50. A little steep but cake was nice!
S.
IMHO the über coolest place in Devon. Amazing breakfasts (bacon is off the chart tasty), ridiculously delicious cakes, a bar, outdoor seating and, if you’re quick, sofas. Plus, to top it all off, close to a gorgeous beach, dog friendly, cyclist friendly and smashing staff. Love it, love it, love it.
N. C.
Generous portions of good food, an interesting style and friendly staff. The csfe/restaurant is well positioned near Mothecombe beach and its car park. Extensive cocktail list .
R. B.
Great food and good service in a historic little schoolhouse, up the hill from the estuary. There is indoor seating (tables and benches) and outdoor tables too. The menu is heavy with fish and seafood options, other choices are more limited. I had the brisket burger which was excellent. There's a wide range of desserts, teas and coffies.
S. W.
The perfect place to be on a late summer day. Dog walk on the beach followed by coffee and a cake served by a bunch of charming, young, smiley people. Dogs welcomed, given a treat and water available. Top rating from all of us including Darcey dog and Saffy spaniel.
S. S.
An idyllic spot above Mothecombe beach. Staff wonderfully friendly. Food to die for..Bang Bang Prawns and dirty fries was a revelation. Don't tell anyone though as this place needs to be keep a secret so it doesn't change!!!
H. F.
Rustic and charming, love this place. Lovely food. Will be returning.
J. B.
Now revamped with a funky vibe, outdoor fire pits and distressed furniture a real contrast from previous. With evening events and a great new menu.
D. W.
Had lunch here after a long morning of walking along the coast path from Noss Mayo. Glad we stopped as opposed to attempting to ford the river as it's a really nice place with a relaxed vibe. Lots of tables outside in the sun (albeit with 40mph gusts). Had one of the local beers and a decent sarnie (alas the fryer was off so the fish goujon sarnie was not available). Friendly staff
t. b.
Nice setting. Would get extremely busy in summer. Great if you like lizza
G. S.
Its located in a lovely place and the food is just average , its expensive £6:00 for two luke warm coffees and the service was terrible my wife asked for a glass of water and waited 20 mins before she asked for it a second time ... We definitely will not use it again i would rather take a flasks of tea with me .
P. C.
Delicious food in an old Schoolhouse that is full of character (blackboard, bunsen burners etc). We went on a wet day and booked ahead which was a good thing as it is quite small inside.Lots of seafood choices and excellent steak from the renown Warrens of Launceston.
H. H.
Tea and cake here after a bracing coastal walk. Great buzz, quirky steam punk decor and tooth tingling brownies. Well worth a long walk and we'll be back very soon for more.
L. Y.
Well if your quest is good honest food prepared by people who have a love of food and what they do then this is the place for you.... it has a mixed up charm almost like eating in a working museum with many salvaged items to add to the magic of the food....
M. M.
I performed an acoustic set at a private event here a few months ago. The location was lovely and the staff were extremely accommodating. The small space made for a really intimate and fun setting for live music too!
J. W.
Great service and atmosphere, family group of 9, great quality lunch, I loved my squid dish!
C. L.
What a lovely lunch!! Highly recommend the burratta salad and bang bang prawns. Can't wait to go back 😊
S. N.
Stopped here as going walking. Picked up some cake to take with us. Sublime. Wish we had time to have a meal. Looked and smelled great.
P. M.
A beautiful setting with lovely food. The only problem I found is the prices, a little on the expensive side. Great for dog walkers as Mothercombe and coastguard beaches are lovely all year round though Mothercombe is closed to dogs between May and October.
A. w. r. a. c.
All for a profit but £14 for two coffees and two hot chocolates bloody ridiculous prices, that's my opinion!
T. C.
Lovely setting and building, cramped inside when allowed, friendly staff, covid secure outside. Nice cake and drink selection!
S. F.
It was nice food but unfortunately not worth the prices charged.
S. A.
Went here today with my son & girlfriend for a quick lunch before hitting the beach. Over all the place is very good, funky, relaxed & fresh. I was a little shocked at how over priced it was though... my son of 8 wanted fish & chips but I begruged paying £15.50 for it, had fish finger club sandwiches instead at £12.50. I get it's right by the beach and good fresh food so prices will be a little inflated but just kinda thought these prices were just taking advantage! I serve great fresh food in my restaurant in the centre of Plymouth but would never dream of charging theses prices!
B. K.
This is probably my favorite restaurant. The food is always a perfect 10, the service is first class and the ambience/vibe is indescribably enchanting. You really have to be there.
m. m.
Nice coffee and cake. But £2.50 for a takeaway can of diat coke was a joke
V. S.
Nice mixture of walks near by views out to sea from the schoolhouse. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff ,a nice mixture of snacks and meals i will be going again and would recommend to others
J. P.
After a mornings hangover walk with the dogs, we decided to have a Calippo afterwards and found them to be perfectly frozen..... Nothing worse than a badly frozen ice cream
L. w.
Ok so the spicy prawn burger /sandwich was delicious! and the staff were very welcoming.
But it took over 40 minutes for the to arrive and it wasnt particularly busy.
The other 2 meals that were ordered were nice but not quite up to scratch for the price.
Both types of sandwich. Nothing was particularly hot, one was doused in sauce (to the point where the bread was too soggy to eat with any dignity) and the other was overcooked.
However all the flavours are really good, but just not cooked/completed to a high enough standard for the price of the sandwich.
It seems like a new business with alot of potential but it just needs some refinement and finishig touches with regard to the service time and food.
A. R.
Lovely meal, great setting, stunning views, quirky building....thoroughly recommended
V. “. B. G. G.
Great little cafe/restaurant. Delicious fries which is always dangerous... Live music, great vibe... We'll be going again!
G. W.
Parking is £5 all day. Contactless payment. Easy walk down to the beach 🏖
J. W.
A great place with bags of personality, tasty food, sharp rustic decor. Sea view and we even had sunshine.
J. B.
Good food, nice views, great staff
A bit pricey
M. B.
Lovely little place to stop and enjoy the views from. Great friendly staff and nice food.
J. B.
Great location and nice outdoor eating space!
L. M.
Loved it!
A. C.
Wonderful location and great service ☺
L. N.
Now transformed from an old tearoom to a gourmet café. Run by the successful team at The Beach House, South Milton. Well worth the half hour drive for a delicious lunch in a truly stunning location. Marvellous.
R. B.
Great location great food
R. R.
Food is scrumptious and staff are very friendly. Carpark however is rather expensive at certain times of the day.
A. J.
Great little place right off the beach. Ideal. Good menu and nice cold drinks including alcohol
T. W.
Very nice people nice cake but their tea? They must buy the cheapest tea bags as there tea is dishwatery and disgusting,
j. w.
Friendly staff but slow and expensive food was good though
D. A.
QUAINT, QWERKY great cheesy chips and a delicious hot chocolate...
J. G.
Not quite sure about value for money here, but the sandwiches were tasty enough 😁
N. c.
Absolutely love it here...the food, the staff and the location is amazing. Always feel welcome here. Xx
L. J.
Always welcoming and friendly staff greet you at Schoolhouse cafe.. Fabulous 😘

Wonderful location and quirky decor make this a must visit for anyone visiting nearby beaches
b. g.
Nice but way to expensive
S. A.
