Reviews of The Barbican Kitchen
M. B.
A great place in a lively part of town. Offering a great selection of food, generous portions and all perfectly cooked.
We had squid and parfait to start, squid was delicious and tender. We were lucky to have the Chateaubriand, there was just one available (worth calling ahead)
Definitely recommend booking ahead.

Great food and the truffle mayo and parmesan fries were the best ever!! Staff friendly and professional. Only down side was the mashed potato hubby had, was on the cold side of aired - admittedly they replaced it straight away with an individual bowl of the same, unfortunately this too was aired at best. That being said hubby was happy with rest of the meal, with the steak cooked perfectly.

We chose this place at random. Excellent decision! Lovely friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Good choice on the menu too.
I had the ox cheek which was delicious and almost melted in my mouth. My husband had the hake which he thoroughly enjoyed. We treated ourselves to pudding, I had chocolate fondant and Simon had the cheeseboard.
Overall a great experience and if we were to visit Plymouth again we would definitely eat here.
T. H.
Warm and pleasant welcome, clean and safe environment, good service and lovely food what more could you ask for. This is a beautifully situated restaurant in the famous Barbican area of Plymouth and the restaurant was full and tge atmosphere was lovely and the food was delicious. All amenities were excellent and we had an excellent night, thank you Barbican Kitchen.
M.
Absolutely love this place, mine and my girlfriends favourite restaurant. Never had a bad meal, and the service is always excellent.
A. M.
Sharing some photos of a memorable meal at the Barbican Kitchen. There was a relaxed informal atmosphere, excellent food and friendly, efficient service. I was pleased to see that the menu has a varied list of vegan choices as well as vegetarian and meat-containing options. Good to see that there is a set menu as well as à la carte options.
D. F.
We found this on line before our visit and I am so glad we did. The service was friendly and the staff were so helpful with recommendations.
The food was amazing. Couldn't fault it. Will be returning on my next trip to Plymouth!
M. C.
My husband and I came to the restaurant this evening. The food was absolutely fantastic. Our waitress Juliana was attentive ,nothing was to much for her. 5 stars for an amazing evening. It was our 43rd wedding anniversary to end the evening a plate came out decorated . Thank you everyone ..formaking our evening so special
M. W.
Looking for an early evening dinner and we were lured in by their set menu deal.
Service was incredible with super friendly staff- especially Julie- Anne.
The quality of the food was exceptional. Beautifully presented and a great range in the menu. Wine was extremely reasonable too. We will return.
W. S.
Came here to celebrate a friend's son completing his first year at uni with flying colours. He chose the restaurant, and what a find he made.
I usually go for a steak or lamb in any restaurant, but thought as the harbour was jut a stone's throw away I'd try the fish, and I'm converted.
We sampled all the nibbles, Marinated Olives, Sticky Chorizo (my favourite), Roasted Garlic Hummus (my other favourite) and the artisan bread.
All three of us tried the South Devon Crab Tart, which was divine, and followed up with Roasted Sea Bream and a Ribeye. The sea bream was out of this world.
This is a place that is definitely on my "to return" list.
L. M.
Beyond outstanding-service, first class and food was incredible. Great vegan options.
The champagne was flowing and the atmosphere was great for a lunchtime visit. All of our party had a tremendous time. Worth the train from Exeter!
M. “. W.
As you'd expect the food was very good, the menu was somewhat under whelming (30th April 22) with most dishes being in our opinion over complicated.
Of the 4 of us nobody was taken by the starters, (e.g you don't need nuts of scallops!)
All our meals were very tasty and well presented, one stake, one calves livers, one pork & one monkfish.
Service was fine but could/should have been more engaging with table.
In summary, we have a nice time and nice food but sadly wouldn't rush back. (Up to this point we eat here probably twice a year) for the price on this occasion I'd guess better could have been found.
E. L.
Great food and attentive service. Food allergy within the group and the staff went over and above to accommodate, when bring out dessert menus stated which ones were allergen free.
K. C.
Excellent from start to finish, outstanding service with a great 3 course set menu to match. Devoured every mouthful. I would say for less able body it is upstairs and toilets downstairs.
J. M.
A little disappointing, we were sat by the lift and there was a terrible draft, felt cold all the time we were there.
My husband had Adirondack pancake with a fried duck egg which looked lovely and he said was delicious, I had chicken liver parfait, which wasn’t that nice, came with a cold slice of brioche which was meant to be toasted.
Main meals- Roasted chicken which was good, but my confit creedy carver duck leg was bland and dry. We ordered chips at a extra cost as the meal doesn’t come with extras. Such a shame as it was our anniversary meal , so disappointing. We were in and out in a hour as food wasn’t great and it was to cold to sit there any longer.
M. W.
A wonderful experience, the staff were friendly and efficient, the food was absolutely delicious, I would definitely return and recommend the Barbican Kitchen to everyone.
S.
Had a family group dinner here and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The service was non intrusive but well paced and casual. We ordered a few starters and finger food to share and kick off the evening- The stand out had to be the fish Taco, it was cooked perfectly and the fish tasted fresh and melted in the mouth.
I had steak for main which was cooked just as I asked (medium). I did order the house burger but after finding out it has to be cooked well done I changed my order to the steak. Something Aussies and foodies overseas may not understand ( to do with local health rules). The steak was lovely and was up there with the Neil Perry steak I had only a few weeks ago (cost me £90 on its own).
The wine was well selected and I really enjoyed the New Zealand Sav Blanc .
We all went next door for a cocktail after - which we enjoyed.
I will come back and try some more from the Menu when next in the Plymouth.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Food was delicious, flavourful and filling. Visited the bar after dinner, and enjoyed a fair selection of cocktails they had to offer. Staff were friendly and helpful in recommending drinks and new gins to try.
Also rather enjoyed exploring the map in the ladies toilets! Certainly helped me to get my bearings of the local area, as this was my first time in Plymouth!
S. S.
Excellent experience, the building is beautiful and the service is great, always making sure we had enough drinks. The food was beautiful too well worth a visit.
S. M.
Class from start to finish, great service, fantastic food with a wine list that let's you enjoy 2 bottles for what many would charge for 1.
Simple starters, fresh local & different build into good sized mains of perfect cooking
Dessert was lovely all served in a calm restaurant that has been nicely set out.
J. D.
Excellent food, great service & the atmosphere was fabulous!
A. c.
Absolutely cracking food, excellent service, atmosphere relaxed. Couldn't have asked for a better evening
J. B.
I thought the food was excellent. Chateaubriand, good chips and sauces. Winner 👍🏻
A. L.
The Plymouth Gin’s distillery restaurant serves great food and the service is excellent. Ambience is ok.
L. G.
Lovely restaurant and staff very nice too. Had a beautiful meal , goats cheese mouse and chocolate fondant tart beautiful.
N. W.
Amazing food. I had Sea Bass for my main meal and it was the best I've ever tasted. Service was spot on. Lovely atmosphere. Not too busy or noisy. Great night out
T. C.
Great place! Probably a good idea to book ahead. Nice food. Well presented and quick polite friendly staff. Ticks across the board.
S. E.
Had the set menu. Was thoroughly enjoyable. Was on the expensive side compared to other restaurants but was worth it considering the quality of the food. Service was good.
P. T.
A really good meal - they catered equally well for an omnivore, two vegans and one of us with gluten intolerance! A lovely, quiet back room, helpful service and excellent wine list. A lovely surprise and one to revisit.
I. S.
Colourful place, good service and food good. When in Plymouth looking for a place to eat check out this restaurant in the old gin distillery.
T. L.
Superb! Our group booking was left without a venue at very late notice and the Barbican kitchen came to the rescue. We had to order in advance because of the number in our party. I must admit that the menu did not excite me initially but....How wrong was I ?!?!
We had options for starters, main and dessert to choose. Crab tart, flat iron steak and cheesecake were my choices. A basket of bread was placed in front of me...crusty artisan bread...it was delightful. The staff were excellent. First course, my crab tart comes out. This was devine. An awesome balance of taste and texture...I did saviour every bite. The next course was the flat iron steak and I must admit, when I saw this on the menu I was not anticipating much but again, How wrong was I ?!?! Incredibly tender, perfectly cooked with a rich sauce to go with it. I lapped up every morsel with the fries. Then the decadent cheese cake shows up, there is always room for dessert. Heaven in every spoonful. The menu didn't appear very extensive at first, but what they did was done perfectly. Great service, amazing food and a lovely venue... I'll be back.
J. P.
Superb food, wonderful service, other patrons were lovely too!
S. E.
The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. The vegan food was good but there was no choice and was quite expensive. However, the chef did put one vegan dessert option on at our request.
C. L.
Best restaurant in Plymouth, amazing food, excellent service and always our top choice for a meal out.
E.
Great food, very kind staff. Value meal. Big table for 4 people, more room than we usually get.
I. S.
Food was very nice with great flavours.. service was excellent.. staff even managed to reunite me with my keys when two of us went home with the wrong coats at the end of the evening
K. P.
We always enjoy dinner here, the food is special and the staff are so lovely
N. S.
Quite a unique setup sitting alongside the famous Plymouth Gin distillery. Staff very welcoming and very attentive, your never left waiting for staff to respond. The menu is good offering a balance between fish, meat and veggie. Food is definately aiming high anf almost reaches those heights but not quite. Maybe more refinery required. Really enjoyed meal and the bill surprised positively at the end
R. R. A.
Good food and good service. I had the scallops and the short ribs. Both were nicely cooked and seasoned. The cheesecake was just ok, nothing is write about
K. D.
Best restaurant in Plymouth. Absolutely love this place. Been going for over a decade and never been disappointed with the food, drink or service.
S. C.
Love this place been here many times never faults in great service and amazing food. From front of house Nathan who is always so polite and kind to the waitress/waiters who are excellent and nothing is to much trouble . And of course the amazing chefs . They also can cater for any dietary requirements which is good for me being a coeliac one of the reasons why they get a 5 star review from me. Keep up the good work. Cant wait to come back in a few weeks time. Xx
S. R.
Lovely food, a bit pricey but an excellent set menu choice which 2 of our party went for, nice surroundings, all in all an excellent setting for last night of our break spent in Plymouth.
G. T.
Lovely atmosphere, excellent food and service
A. N.
Food good quality, pricey but don't mind paying when food is that good
M. M. (. v. Y.
Really decent place, steak done exactly like it should be. Food was really good quality and tasty. Might be bit loud at the evenings when full, not the quietest place on earth.
D. S.
Awesome service and food as usual! thank you for making our evening special!
J. W.
Had a fabulous night, food was amazing, staff really lovely and helpful, Carl was over the moon the guy's found time to have a photo, best meal in a long time, I can not recommend enough.
J. W.
Absolutely fabulous💜 I had a special birthday meal there. The food was excellent and the staff very polite and helpful. It felt very safe in these worrying days. So clean and safety was obviously well thought out. Well worth a visit.
J. M.
Lovely staff and delicious food. Generous portions which is very appreciated and will priced. Will definitely return!
D. J.
Great food, Excellent service.
d. _.
It's a lovely place to be. Service is fantastic and the food is amazing. Many thanks
J. F.
We have just returned home after a lovely evening at the barbican kitchen. It was very organised, all the staff had face guards on and they have lost some tables to comply with social distance. The food was excellent as usual, the atmosphere was great and the staff were brilliant. Well done barbican kitchen, we'll see you soon 😊
P. J.
Excellent food with friendly staff. Excellent service especially looking after me following a fall. Huge thanks to Ellie, Aaron and Mark, you are a credit to the company.
M. C.
Just had an amazing family Christmas meal at Barbican Kitchen. Set Christmas menu was excellent value for money, top quality food and extremely tasty. Great to see the Tanner Brothers cooking your meals which makes it extra special. Waitress was very polite and made us all feel welcome. Well done everyone at Barbican Kitchen enjoy your festive break and we will be back in the New Year for more incredible food ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️
N. R.
Great staff and lovely food.
I. I.
Amazing Brasserie, great service and great food!
C. B.
Not been in here for 3 or 4yrs. I was looking forward in anticipation considering it's reputation and perceived quality. I have to say I was disappointed. Extortionate prices for average food and small portions.....the scallops starter and the raspberry dessert in particular. We are both Mediterranean food lovers and it took us quite a while to find a main which we would find remotely palatable to our tastes. Nothing exotic, nothing special, lots of steaks, burgers and cod and chips. Basically nothing different that made it stand out from the dozen other restaurants within a quarter of a mile. And so expensive.....and pretentious The next evening we went to Maritimo and for nearly half the price we had a far better tapas meal and we had views of Plymouth Sound!
A. R.
Last Saturday night was saved by Nathan and his great team at the Barbican Kitchen. It was a last minute booking as the other place was so shockingly bad it would have ruined the Birthday night out.
Nathan was friendly, accommodating and gave a courtesy call to let me know the table was ready.
Everyone had a great night with excellent food and drink.
The waitress was lovely and a real credit to the restaurant.
Thank you so much.
D. R.
Great food and good wine list. I have been three times now within the space of 6 months and have been pleased every time. I would highly recommend the steak it is worth the price. If you have time before your meal a cocktail at the refectory bar is a great way to start your evening.
k. c.
Great food but would definitely order the set menus as that's where you will find the most value. Only complaint is that the dessert for one of the people on our table took way too long to arrive for what it was. But other than that a good experience.
E. S.
Great food, and can cope really well with large groups
G. T.
The food here is absolutely amazing I would recommend any to visit.
It is a cozy friendly place with a good atmosphere.
The staff are really friendly and very helpful.
We definitely visit again as often as possible.
Thank you Barbican kitchen for a pleasurable experience.
M. A. C.
I walked past this place two nights in a row because from the outside it looks nothing special, old and I was expecting a cafe type of place not good enough for an evening meal. It is inside the Plymouth Gin distillery and museum. Boy was I wrong. We tried it and were amazed how nice it was inside, the staff could not have been any more helpful.
The food was priced right, a bottle of Pino Grigio for about £16.00, quite good for a restaurant.
Then came the food. OMG!, It was heaven, I had meal of teh day, fresh local caught Pollack on potato with a cream and cheese sauce serviced with broccoli. It was amazing, they could not have improved it if they tried. My wife had the triple fried chips with fish in beer batter and loved, it, I tried it and yes it was really good. I would not hesitate to recommend this little gem.
K. F.
Amazing food at a reasonable price. Great choice. Contemporary feel to restuarant. Definately recommend.
S. B.
Great food, great service, reasonable pricing & a fantastic building to be in. We'll be back soon. Really couldn't fault it
R. L.
Outstanding food, great company, helpful staff
D. C.
Just had a great meal here and everything was as safe as possible. Food was great staff so friendly and because of the £10 per person was great value. Well recommended
D. B.
We stumbled across this establishment while killing time waiting for the over night ferry . We had checked out some of the other eating houses and pubs in the area , and decided that this one was for us.
It was a Monday evening, and so we were quite surprised that it was as busy as it was, but always a good sign.
The service was friendly, but proffesional . The food was tasty and hot . the Gin was as you would expect, even served with our favourite tonic. All in all, a really good experience. Many thanks
C. S.
Amazing food, great service & friendly staff.
The steak was outstanding, cooked to perfection! The sticky toffee pudding & the chocolate cheesecake were divine!
Definitely recommend coming here, I know I'll be back!!
M. A.
In a word.. Stunning! One of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Food was incredible, so much attention to detail and finesse. Service was very attentive you felt very valued as a customer. One of the best restaurants in Plymouth. Can't wait to go back again!
S. R.
Considering how long the restaurant has been running I expected the place to feel tired and the food options boring ... NOT the case at all. All the seating looked refurbished and the menu choices had been updates and definitely hard to choose between as all sounded so tasty. Lovely to enjoy some gin cocktails in the Plymouth Gin Refectory before being seated for our meal.
C. N.
Good service, friendly staff, good food but not up to the standard I was expecting for a resteraunt noted in the Michelin guide
P. B.
We had a good time the food was good service good the bar staff were helpful good all round
J.
The food was amazing! The manager and the staff were remarkable and very helpful. Thank you for accommodating our request for our special day. You made it a fantastic experience for us and our guests. Cheers!!!
B. F.
Food was great and the service was excellent, a great experience.
A. S.
Service and food were perfect as always! It never disappoints. Felt really safe and clean, tables were very far apart so no concerns about Covid-19. Totally recommend.
K. C.
Amazing steak, friendly and comfortable 😋
E. W.
Great location on the Barbican co-located with distillery and separately run bar. Food was terrific and very slickly presented for our large party of 8. Recommended.
N. “. L.
They have loads of deals on for lunches and early bird meals. When this is on the place is an easy 5 star. When it's normally prices don't get me wrong the foods good but it's not to the same standard as the prices set
M. J.
We love the restaurant and the adjacent cocktail bar. The food is excellent quality without being too fussy. Very attentive staff with a relaxed friendly atmosphere.
C. F.
Food very good, although about as good as you night expect for the price. Staff were very helpful, and the restaurant itself had a nice feel to it and generally a relaxed atmosphere.wpupd go again.
I. W.
Stunning food and amazing value with their offer. Excellent service. Very good.
D. S.
Wonderful food.
Very friendly helpful staff.
Good price for quality food.
They had a lift which was a bonus.
Definitely would recommend.
E. P.
Great restaurant for an upmarket meal. Good service, good food, reasonable prices for what you get.
Gin distillery next door is worth visiting for predinner drinks for a great gin (cocktail prices are reasonable high though).
S. D.
Unfortunately not as good as it used to be. We used to have most family birthday meals there up until about a year ago when the menu changed and things didn't quite seem the same high quality experience we came to expect. Don't get me wrong, the food is still good but the current menu is just not as good as it was.
A. V.
Once again a lovely meal. Especially nice as James was there doing some of the cooking himself. Fantastic food cannot wait to go back.
P. H.
Excellent à la carte dining embedded embedded in the upper floors of the Plymouth Gin's Black Friars distillery.
Moderately priced and fine dishes beautifully presented. Subtle and delicate west-country flavours abound. Local Barbican fish market a resource and Jacka bakery bread served.
Not a large floor but can seat groups. Booking definitely advisable.
m. m.
I would say that the toilet of the restaurant is one of the hidden gems of Plymouth.
While we were eating and drinking my friend went to the toilet three times. The first time for necessity but she forgot what she had to do because she got lost on the map. The second time just to take some pictures. The third time to explore
again.
I highly recommend to visit it. You can definitely have a nice break down there during dinner, BUT BE CAREFUL, don't let the wall of the toilet makes you stuck in there because your hot meal will cool. 😕
K. D.
Absolutely love this place! Fantastic and friendly staff & mouth watering food! Looking forward to going back!
K.
First of all, food is absolutely amazing. I had snow White delicious fish in beer breading. Everything was amazing about the food. Bit pricey. But for food like that I can pay
👌
S. B.
Great food, pleasant setting and friendly staff and service.
A. C.
Great meal. Would highly recommend.
c. m.
Great food. Friendly staff. Very safe and secure while still being a lovely experience
G. T.
Excellent food in a great location in Plymouth. Good but not fussy food
G. B.
In general food for others was good, but in my opinion burger should be redesigned - I would not recommend it. Beef can be only well done.
C. G.
So good..amazing food..lovely service. Good value
R. J.
Great to to find such a family friendly restaurant. They were great with our little baby girl. Lovely food. Thank you
L. M.
Really great location, lovely welcome, excellent waiter and the food was of fantastic quality. Working really hard and well under the Covid restrictions.
S. S.
Whilst the food is quite expensive, I can say both the steak and the cheeseburger are top notch. Came for a birthday meal and was not disappointed, even provided a cookie and ice cream with a happy birthday message hand written across it.
R. S.
Great food and atmosphere combined in a wonderful location. Continue to enjoy coming back here with the family when visiting the area.
A. H.
Brilliant meal with great staff and not over priced considering location.
J. C.
The scallops, tomato salad, and ribeye were perfect. I did not expect the steak to come out as well as it did. Will happily return for another meal here.
E. “.
Lovely meal and relaxed atmosphere. Crab tart starter was divine
M. C.
Clean and pleasant. Staff good. The food is overpriced. I think one has to pay for the name
P. M.
Very good food presented in an interesting way, prompt and courteous service and a nice ambience. One of the very few restaurants in Plymouth which provide the opportunity for fine dining.
D. B.
Awesome visit, went on my own as on business trip everyone made me feel welcomed, no rushing to take my order to get me out quicker (most places do this)..
Food was out of this world.. do try the steak if you ever go.
Thanks
J. D.
Our go to place for a nice meal in Plymouth, this occasion was a bit of a let down compared to usual, staff always friendly and knowledgeable. Food was decent but just not up to usual extremely high standards.
A.
Love this restaurant, service is excellent and food is consistently good. Love the collaboration with the Gin Distillery Refectory Bar. Its just a shame you cant have tapas style food served with the cocktails upstairs in the cocktail bar.
K. R.
Enjoyed all we ate in this well decorated trendy restaurant. Only room for improvement was a very narrow selection on the menu. Had a difficult time finding something to my taste.
L. H.
Barbican kitchen was everything we needed, clean, polite staff, prompt, yet not annoying service and superb food, with a choice of quality beverages.
We had a great mid part to our day out here, having had a #Plymouthgin tour, this seemed like a convenient choice and we were not disappointed.
J. E.
Good food, friendly staff, lovely environment. Excellent!
K. M. M.
Lovely place even if packed on a Saturday night. Exqusite starter and the best steak I ever had in the UK (ribeye). Complete with buttered green Devon asparagus.
A. M.
Nice restaurant and nice food. Only reason for that *missing is because it took us two hours from start to finish.. We were waiting too long to be served and in between courses..
B. C.
Great food for a special birthday meal. Thank you all
C. M.
Really Great food and top notch service.
A. V.
Food was incredible. Likely the best fillet steak I’ve ever had 🤤

I've enjoyed both the main Tanners restaurant and the bistro, the barbican kitchen never fails to produce fresh, tasty meals in a gorgeous and historical setting, Never fails to satisfy and please,
B. M.
Had the set lunch... and a glass of red. Lovely !!!
A. J. S.
Love the food here. Not on the cheaper side but you get what you pay for. Their steak and fish is amazing.
R. M.
Excellent food, especially the small plates.
C. N.
Although everything was OK, felt something was missing..... trading off 'Tanner' brothers name not the experience. Shame, had expected it to live up to the hype, as I said ok but not special.
R. H.
Lovely place with happy staff serving good food. Early evening miss brilliant value.
M. C.
Seriously good food ,very smart layout , lovely staff , and prices are very good ,thanks will definitely eat there again ,
