Reviews of The Mussel Inn & Cottages
E. M.
We hired a few tables on the terrace for my daughters baby shower,
We had a beautiful cream tea, the scones where freshly baked they tasted amazing, everyone said how fresh they where,
We also had a buffet style lunch spread, sandwiches, chips, vegetarian selection etc, all of it so tasty, 5 stars to the chefs.
All the staff are friendly polite and happy to help, they are all a lovely team.
The whole party had a lovely chilled out day, thank you to all the staff who helped make the day special.
I would say to anyone if you haven't visited yet you must go.

Went here for date night after the husband was recommended by friends. I checked out the menu before and thought it was too posh for me 🤣 but the husband wanted to go so we booked a table.
When we arrived there for our table at 7pm the carpark was full!....shows that it is enjoyed by many throughout the day but someone was just leaving! Perfect! I didn't need to find a space somewhere else in the dark!
Lots of friendly faces from the staff when we arrived and there was lots of chatter from the customers seated at their tables.
Considering the number of people it was clean and tidy and well looked after.
We were seated and ordered our drinks. I liked how they were mainly local suppliers and businesses helping to support eachother!
We ordered our food and my lack of posh names for normal dishes showed 🤣🤦🏻♀️ but everything I ordered was delicious! My husband even said the hummus from his starter was "the best he had ever had!"
All of the staff were amazing tending to customers, turning tables over for the next and keeping everything clean and tidy, like a well oiled machine!
Will definitely return but not one for our toddler just yet...this can remain a nice place for mummy and daddy first!

Just returned from a week here! The Cottages are brilliant. Perfectly furnished to an outstanding quality. We stayed in the Cockle with our little doggie. He settled in straightaway. Secure garden for him to use and a stair gate to keep him securely down stairs even at night.
If you would like a holiday in an accommodation furnished to the high standard you enjoy at home this is the place for you. Great facilities, oven, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher and Large TVs in every room, rain showers, fluffy white towels.
Recently we have stayed in accommodation that have pulled back in the nice welcomes such as a welcome pack of basic foods and toiletries but not here!! Nicely packaged toiletries waiting in the bathroom and Prosseco, tea, milk and cookies etc in the kitchen !
We ate every night we could at Mussel Inn as why eat anywhere else the food was fab!! Catering for all tastes in our part!! Even if they were fully booked (which being so popular they often were) they managed to fit us in.
We had some lovely local walks particularly taking in the Wembury Ponies which was a welcome surprise.
Great farm shop to visit nearby at Ben’s Farm shop and if you want a bit of retail therapy pop into Plymouth for some big shopping centres. We went further afield to Brixham lovely seaside town about an hrs drive away and you can even pop over the border to Cornwall 45 mins to NT Cothele worth a visit too.

The food was excellent. The staff were attentive and friendly. Lovely atmosphere inside and out. Definitely recommend.

My Husband and I enjoyed a festive sharing platter. It was sooooooooooo good. The pub is lovely and has a great play area for children
S. S.
Fabulous food, wonderful friendly staff n great atmosphere!! 👍
M. C.
Always amazing, the best roasts in Plymouth ! I go often and can never fault the food or the service. It's a lovely pub with lots of charm. The log burner is an extra bonus .
R. B.
Great accommodation, high spec fixtures and fittings and the perfect base for exploring the Plymouth area.
J. J.
Had a fantastic meal here for other half dad's birthday. Staff very friendly. Took the dog so sat outside. Bit windy. Would love to go again & sit inside. Without barky dog.
V. F.
Just looking forward to a mid week meal out but turned into so much more. Excellent service, atmosphere and food far superior to anything in the locality. Highly recommend. Val Fisher.
D. K.
Popped in on the off chance of a table service is great I went for the catch of the day Lemon Soul, outstanding service and food. Booked a table last night once again great service and the catch of the day to die for. Would book again when down that way.
N. P.
Food was excellent, very clean, staff very friendly. Highly recommended. Would've given 5* but no cheesecake on the dessert menu.
J. S.
Really lovely country style pub. We went for Sunday roast lunch and were very impressed. Great value for money, especially the children's portions. They like to serve a lot of gravy so bare that in mind if you prefer less (like our kids). There is parking but fills up quickly.
d. f.
Lovely food and service but I couldn't help but notice the verbal noise is amplified due to its lack of soft furnishings which make soft romantic chit chat imposible.
c. l.
Really lovely country pub in a sleepy hamlet near the coast - laid back, low key, unpretentious, welcoming - food is amazing - I had the most beautiful mussels in stout and cream sauce with unbelievably good chips. My husband had a cheeseburger which was superb.
Great selection of beers, ciders & wine.
The service is friendly, efficient and polite.
Lovely old - building, wood fires and a view from the huge beer garden across stunning countryside.
Dogs welcome, muddy boots encouraged, car park by pub - close to the beaches of Bovisand and Wembury.

This is the local to my mums place. Been going here for years. Has changed over time, but only for the better. To be honest I should rate this place 5⭐ just for serving Sea Fury ale but this particular positive review comes from whipping us up a board of nibbles late on New Years Day, without booking and when the kitchen was closed.
n. j.
Food was great. drink service was slow. Table 3 we sat at was in a walk way so not much room and people had to squeeze past the chair all the time.
A. D.
Fantastic home made pies , great quality food, fresh ingredients and generous portions. And very friendly staff.
Inside bar and restaurant beautifully decorated.
A. P.
First time here after hearing many good reviews.
Staff are friendly and polite but the younger staff perhaps a little slow. We had to wait ages for someone to ask about desserts…
I ordered the garlic and mushroom Kiev… but that was not what I received. I think you perhaps need to reword it a little bit better as I did not expect three large mushrooms to turn up in front of me filled with a garlic crumb! Although it was flavoured quite nice I was unable to eat it as I was expecting a Kiev… we did laugh but I also did leave feeling quite hungry 😂
The gammon/ham was lovely, Very thick and tasty.
Chicken supreme… That was okay but I think it was a tad overpriced and I can’t recall if it said it was on the bone but I think that something that should be mentioned if that is a regular occurrence
I would go again to try a few other things on the menu
G. S.
We have just had the perfect Sunday roast. The best thing I could say is that it's worth driving out of your way to come here as it is not on a main thoroughfare. Food and service were outstanding. And all very reasonably priced. Highly recommended.
R. P.
Meal for 6 of us last night. Unfortunately our meals were very late coming out which was really frustrating for us all but the staff were brilliantly attentive and genuinely apologetic (and waived our bill). The actual food was excellent, so well cooked and delightfully presented. Hats off to the chef on a very busy evening. All in all, I rate this place highly as, while mistakes can happen, it’s how you treat the customers that really count and the staff were consummate professionals in this case.
S. M.
Good food if a little expensive. Saying that it was all very fresh seafood and piping hot. The atmosphere was a little still and sterile but it's not a pub, more an eatery/ restaurant in an old pub building. Surprisingly busy for a Wednesday evening and carpark was full.
r. c.
Okayish! Read the reviews and decided to book a Sunday lunch spot. Great views from a lovely country pub, particularly on a sunny summer afternoon! Ordered a lamb & a beef Sunday lunch and was a bit underwhelmed! Parsnips were undercooked, not a major issue, but generally not a lot of taste and certainly nothing special - maybe we have come to expect too much!
N.
Monkfish red Thai curry was super tasty. Could have multiple times happily. Great place for a family meal with the dog.
M. F.
Lovely place. Attentive staff. Excellent quality of food. Actually don’t go, we wouldn’t want to not get in!! (But they deserve the praise).
E. J.
We are on holiday not far from here. Have had 2 meals so far at this pup food is really good service to and staff really friendly highly recommend Sunday lunch. Good idea to book
B. N.
Friendly staff and amazing food. Play area for the kids is a good size with modern play equipment. Nice variation of outside seating areas aswell.
J. W.
Never ever disappointed with the food always amazing, staff super friendly. Great pub would recommend to anyone
N. J.
Food is excellent, staff cannot do enough for you. I highly recommended this pub.
L. L.
Absolutely wonderful gastro pub, impeccable food and lovely service every time.
M. B.
Made a change and had a non seafood meal here. Great food and service as per usual.
R. C.
Very expensive roast dinner and tell them if you don't like cheese sauce because there was lots of it on my plate! Food was ok. Play park is lovely outside.
T. S.
Great atmosphere and great food. Always busy when you need it to be.
N. W.
Good service by front of house staff : attentive ,courteous and speedy.
Not matched I'm afraid by the kitchen !
Chunky chips were far from it : and sadly so! And the crab salad for starters was oddly served in a small kilner jar . Portions could have been more generous. But I don't blame the kilner jar.
A dark chocolate Crēme brulée with raspberries ,that we were looking forward to as pudding, had a few raspberries smothered in powdered chocolate on a base that was not recognizably a crême brulée.
Sorry guys : not up to scratch.
C. A.
Really excellent from start to finish. Food fresh and delicious, nice atmosphere and friendly staff.
K. D.
Lovely place for good food, service was good too
D. E.
Meet up with the vets group ymc delicious food really nice place to eat and drink .
C. P.
I was taken here by friends who know I can be a bit picky. I like great food and service, both of which the Mussel provided. The arancini was perfectly crispy, yum, while the pork belly was perfection. Three out of four of us had the pork which left the fourth member to do all the talking while we devoured the excellent meal. If you are thinking of going here, go. If you have half as good a meal as I had, it will still be worth the trip.
D. B.
Great place. Excellent food, friendly staff and a good play area for kids.
D. M.
Best place we have stayed in a while! So clean and welcoming, got absolutely everything needed. The pub is full of extremely friendly and happy staff, food was 10/10! Highly recommend. Will definitely be returning :)
G.
Have always loved this country pub, which has now been transformed by the current owners into the best in the area. Not a huge selection of ciders but a few proper ales, and a fantastic menu. Good decor and log burning stoves on the inside, and a great outdoor area with a new, safe play-park for the children.
Recommended rain or shine.
S. T.
First time I've popped in since the pandemic, but wasn't disappointed - still the same high standard of food.
I took a friend for Sunday lunch. I pre-booked, which I'm glad I did to make sure I got a table. I had roast pork and my friend had roast beef. The food was excellent, and far too much for either of us to be able to clear our plates, which is always a good sign.
The only downside was that we weren't able to park in the car park. I'm assuming it's because there were lots of people sitting outside because the inside didn't seem busy enough.
Would definitely recommend visiting if you're looking for somewhere that serves good, honest food.
K. M.
Fabulous roast at a really reasonable price. The staff were great. Very attentive but not in your way and constantly asking if everything is ok. Really lovely place and will be returning before long.
S. K.
Absolutely amazing food, the service was excellent and for our party of 19 they couldn't be more helpful.

Went to the Mussel Inn for my wife and mines Anniversary. Greeted warmly and then taken care by the very professional but friendly staff. The place was very busy, with a happy laid back atmosphere. So I would recommend booking, which is easy to do on their website To start my wife had the Corn Hummus with Chorizo, which was absolutely delicious. I had the Cornish Style Mussels, which were fantastic, they had been steamed in ale which gave them a distinct and wonderful flavour. Then for Main my wife had the lamb, which frankly was out of this world, and I have to admit, having tried it I was very jealous. However, my king prawn and monkfish Penang curry, was inviting and flavorful, in other words bloody delish. As the food was so good and despite feeling almost/very full. We decided to try a pudding, my wife had Chocolate parfait, which was apparently and again delicious and I had the Coconut rice pudding, which was very good . We told the staff that we felt the Chef should have a pay rise as the meal had been exceptional. The cost with a couple of pints very well kept Atlantic ale and a couple of large soft drinks was £89. Frankly we felt we had robbed them, having paid more and had poorer experiences else where. We shall be returning soon and are likely to repeatedly returning if the food is always this good.
s.
I can not recommend this warm friendly local pub enough. The food over my weeks stay in the area was exceptional. The roast dinner was the best I have ever eaten. 6 of us ate on another occasion and there were no complaints.
J. A.
Place is decent, food is fantastic, the staff are great. Couldn't ask for more, will definitely be back 🙋♂️
A. L.
Lovely food , not super expensive ,nice staff , limited parking
L. T.
What a lovely evening we had in the sun. The childrens playground is such a good idea and the food was amazing.
Cant wait to visit again.
Lovely friendly staff too.
J. C.
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal tonight. We have been staying at the Caravan Club site and after a local recommendation we decided to spend our last evening with ourselves. We were not disappointed. The steak & ale pie was amazing and the belly pork was delicious too.
Thank you.
E. M.
Stayed in one of the cottages and it was brilliant. We popped into the pub very late on Sunday and was so accomdating to us and delivered a roast to our cottage which was amazing! Will definitely be coming back!
T.
Nice place. Good kids play ground, beer garden, dog wash with dog soap. Let down by the tight portion of chips and cheesy chips, at £5 for a portion of cheesy chips one would expect a decent bowl full. Bowls were like a small breakfast bowl, large coffee cup. Maybe I am out of touch of Southams prices.
u. c.
Lovely place! The staff were very friendly, the food was unbelievable.
I would go as far as to say the best roast I’ve had yet👌🏾
The sun came out and we headed down to the park which is a stone throw away and the kids played for hours
It was the perfect afternoon with the family.
Big thankyou to all the staff and to the chef! ❤️
H. S.
Food here was delicious. Had plenty of gluten free options and good selection of beer and ciders.
D. C.
Fabulous food, and really nice down to earth service. Variety on the every day menu so something for all. Do a seasonal taster menu for an accessible finer dining food experience with no pretentiousness.
T.
Really nice food, staff are friendly and the pub has a really nice atmosphere 👍🏻
B. S.
Lovely place to eat. Food was delicious.
M. S.
We really enjoyed our visit to The Mussel Inn. Excellent and attentive service from friendly staff. Good range of menu choice and the food was superb! We will definitely be back again!
M. P.
Always a cosy pub in the winter. Lovely outside space for the children and a good place to take a break in a walk to or from Bovi. In warmer weather there are now benches outside and a lovely view. Play equipment for the children keeps them occupied.
P. h.
The cottages are lovely, we stayed in the cockle it was decorated really nicely.
We had 2 dogs with us the in-laws and my puppy, they both settled well - my puppy done a minor damage to skirting board and the owners were so understanding it really did make things less stressful considering how worried I was...
The gardens are enclosed but both dogs managed to escape due to the Bank which should really have some fencing of some sort either at the top or at the grass edge.
We ate in the mussel for a night which was decent the food was really good, understandably due to staffing issues read in a previous review the pub has odd opening times which was manageable as we went to others in the area.
Bovisand Beach is about a 15min walk, with some fantastic scenery.
The only things I'd suggest is:
• Fully locking down the gardens so dogs don't escape
• Designated parking for the cottages as the pub is so popular if you go out even for 5mins to the shop you come back and have to park down the street somewhere.
• Suggestions on things to do in and around the area maybe a comments book for each property so people can leave comments of what they done and where they went etc.
Otherwise we all had a fantastic time, thank you for having us and the doggos.

Had Christmas Dinner here. Lively pub with great food and friendly staff. Had to wait a bit for the food but it was well worth it when it arrived.
S. M. (.
Very nice meal, good service and dog friendly. Would recommend stopping in if you're passing.
w. h.
Really lovely Sunday roast, the beef just melted in the mouth, the Yorkshire pudding was huge & the vegetables were very tasty & real roast potatoes. Will be going back again soon. Definitely recommend & dog friendly!
S. M.
Fantastic food. We ate there 5 times in one week....which says it all.
Some lovely staff too.
Well done.
My only criticism is the tables are sticky as not dried after cleaning.
E. P.
Lovely classy, country style pub with excellent food and lovely staff! The roast and chocolate brownie was amazing and kids thouroughly enjoyed their fish n chips. Have fond childhood memories of this pub but over the years it seemed to have lost its way. So nice to see it thriving again :)
Only thing I have to say to make a bit more appealing would be to possibly have something for the kids to play on in the beer garden during the nice weather. Highly recommended for sure!!! X
M. K.
Fabulous food and wonderful hospitality!!:a must visit!!
P. C.
I was staying locally so went in a couple of times. The most striking thing about this pub is the staff: they engage, are friendly and best of all, smile when they serve you! It was a real pleasure to go in. A very warm welcome indeed!
The first time I went in, the barmaid smiled broadly and was happy to discuss the local beers they had on and even offered a little taste of them so I could decide.
It's a relaxed, friendly and welcoming atmosphere - and very dog friendly!
The pub is exceptionally clean - the toilets are very "bay window" - perhaps the garden needs a bit of an overhaul and tidy (hence 4 stars).
The beer is very good too...
B. B.
Friendly efficient service, cosy atmosphere ,food delicious, good portions .Great choice of local gins
L.
We have just spent a wonderful evening having drinks and a meal the food was cooked to perfection by the chefs and was delicious, Will ,Jamie and the rest of the staff tonight were excellent in the service they provided and we shall not hesitate in eating there again.

A. N.
Great Sunday roast!! Staff are attentive but not intrusive. Lovely atmosphere and dog friendly too
K. R.
Lovely Pub with amazing outlook, staff very helpful and friendly
S.
Visited the Mussel today for a birthday lunch on a busy sunday. There were 9 of is and I couldn't fault anything about the experience. The refurbished inside looks great and there was a good atmosphere. The food was all very good and service was excellent. There is enough variety of food and drink to suit most people and we had several different main courses and desserts all of which were tasty, well cooked, well presented and reasonable value. We will definitely be back.
R. S.
The cottage we stayed in was fantastic we couldn't have asked for another better, we enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night. Would highly recommend great stay !!!
B. J.
The staff were extremely helpful even though they were so busy, they were very polite and friendly. The roast dinner was really lovely. Highly recommended this pub that is tucked away off the main drag. Excellent
S. B.
Very well run & reasonably Covid friendly, but Sunday menu was disappointing. Pretty well everything cooked with garlic & struggled with a vegetarian option. They did address the situation, but you would think a vegetarian option would be a standard these days. I personally hate garlic, again they addressed this, but the menu is very limited, beware.
s. h.
Had a lovely meal here with some tasty real ale. The menu is small but the food was tasty and well cooked. The staff were friendly and the pub itself had a friendly atmosphere. I'd be happy to go again
m. h.
Cottage was great, ticked all the boxes for an enjoyable week.Mussel Inn serves great food, friendly and helpful staff, nothing too much trouble, thank you all keep up the great work.
M. M.
Great mussel dishes. Coconut desert was awesome too
R. P.
Really good food, served promptly by friendly, courteous staff in a lovely country pub with good outdoor area to sit with an excellent play area for children.
J. F.
Very nicely decorated in bar and toilets but a big. But.. the food was not up to the standard I had expected, nor the price. A small fish size of a small mackerel with caper and prawn sauce £17.00___ no way! My wife could not eat it. Rather than complain she left it!
K. B.
We were lucky enough to be the first people to stay in these fabulous cottages.
Down Thomas is a great location, about 1mile from a couple of sandy beaches and a few miles from Mount Batton where there's regular ferries into Plymouth.
We didn't eat in the Mussel Inn (although the beer garden is great), but we can recommend the Eddystone Inn (1mile) which has a lovely sea view.
We stayed in the Oyster cottage which had a hot tub, cottage itself was very well appointed: both taste and quality.
Can highly recommend a stay here!
A. l.
Had our wedding breakfast here last Saturday.
Could not have asked for more.
Food was delicious and the service was as ever Outstanding!!!!
Returned for the evening "doo" and that was equally spectacular
Ollie knocked out some banging tunes and the sarnies and chips were gorgeous 🌯🍟
Massive thanks to Ben,Sam,Sarah and the whole team for making our day so special🍾😀🎸💐

The new Mr and Mrs Lynam❤️❤️❤️

One of the best local Country Pubs and excellent dining. Quality food, drink and service
M. B.
2nd time for a Sunday roast at the mussel inn. Simply stunning food. We wouldn't go anywhere else now. Friendly and welcoming and food is awesome! A must if you haven't been yet - you won't regret it! 😊
C. M.
Excellent food and great service. Lovely location. Well done all concerned and thank you 😊
P. H.
Absolutely amazing pub with amazing food and beers!! The staff are so friendly too.
The outside play area for the children is amazing.
R. J.
Great decor after new owners moved in. Nice big log fire burning away keeping the Inn nice and cosy. Lovely food and good menu with childrens menu available, just had Sunday dinners with outstanding service. They cater for birthday parties etc.and restrooms are available, and last but not least my favourite free parking.
A. C.
Gorgeous meal and the staff were really patient with my very excited puppy x
k. d.
Under new ownership now . Had a great meal there, attentive pleasant staff and a lovely atmosphere.it was a cold day and real woodburner heating makes all the difference in a country pub. Couldn't fault the service and good pricing too.
L. B.
My husband and I had a fabulous meal at Mussel Inn a few weeks back. My husband is a pescatarian and I have food allergies so it's not always easy to eat out. The staff particularly Ella and Millie were so helpful and patient and checked with the chef that food allergy content was OK for me. The food when it arrived not only looked good, it tasted absolutely delicious. Would definetely recommend this Inn. You will not be disappointed.
M. H.
First we had been there for years and were pleasantly surprised with the refurbishment. Staff were polite and there's something for everyone whether it's food or drink that's required. The quality and quantity of the food, as far as we were concerned, was good.
R. M. D.
On Sunday we enjoyed a really good Sunday lunch then today called in for a quick drink.. pub 300pm was empty but the owners daughter introduced herself and made us rally welcome.. wish it was my local.
S. W.
Very busy but good food and good beer.
D. L.
While on holiday we tried The Mussel Inn.
Staff very friendly, we didn't have a booking. However, they fitted a family of 5 in. Excellent food & service. Also dog friendly.
j. W.
Haven't been in a while . Very enjoyable meal, had the belly pork with a superb sauce will certainly be going back
H. P.
Lovely restaurant, good service divine food. Will definitely be going again
e. w.
First time visited since it has reopened. From what I saw it looked liked it had been refurbished. Only had a quick pint which was very nice. I can not comment on the food on offer. As a stop off during a long walk in the area well worth a visit. I will be back.
A. C.
Very pleasant country pub/restaurant, there was a small but good quality selection of local beers available, staff were very pleasant and food was spectacular. Worth a trip if you can get someone to drive!
S. H.
Good food, beer and service. They had live music tonight but the piped music needs to be switched off! This was our first visit for a number of years, the pub having recently re-opened. Will be back!
C. J. L.
Good to see this Inn open again. We popped in for lunch today. The thick walls keep the inside cool. A fair selection on the menu, food was enjoyable and plenty of it. You can park right outside.
B. M.
Lovely pub with good food. One issue my wife had duck breast , she got 2 small slither of duck breast which was probably a third of a breast. Shame because the food was great otherwise.
O. S.
Amazing food. Cosy setting. Extremely welcoming and warm staff. Just perfect
M. J.
Wonderful high quality pub food. Not pretentious in any way everything on the menu is good.
J. H.
Nice pub. Summer time opening very poor..Closed Monday and Tuesday. Afternoon opening 12noon to 3pm. Then evening 6pm to 11pm. Some staff lovely.
T. S.
Our local pub, great place to eat and drink, warm welcome from the team and locals alike.

Great food and friendly staff
J. B.
Lovely old pub /restaurant. Good food with adventurous menu. Staff friendly but service was poor this visit.
A. H.
We just called in for a drink while walking but we are definitely going for a meal later this week. Its lovely inside the staff are great and the food looks really good.
C. B.
Lovely atmosphere. Fantastic food and reasonably priced for both food and drink. This is more of a place to eat than a place to drink on the weekend as it gets busy with diners.
C. W.
Excellent first meal out after lockdown. The food from a smaller menu was superb. The service was good and it was nice just to get out.
C. S.
Really fantastic Sunday lunch - just perfect
D. M.
Excellent. High end food served at very reasonable prices given the quality. Staff really pleasant and helpful. Cosy but modern interior- would definitely recommend and return
R. C.
Amazing food portions were a really good size . Garden and Park was a great touch . Will most definitely return
A. B.
Has been refurbished since I was last here. Lovely and the food was delicious. Unfortunately no nice outside space to eat except some tables in the carpark. Plenty of parking.
M.
Newly refurbed and ready to go after the main part of the lock down, if you love good food and a pint with a great team of people to keep you fed and happy with a lovely location to boot....... Accept no substitutes
J. W.
most amazing hidden gem ,delicious food and reasonable price ,getting high quality service from very friendly staff, often go for a sunday roast after a coastal walk around wembury x

(Translated) After reading the reviews, I ordered seafood pasta, but it felt a bit Chinese. Most locals ordered mussels for starters and individuals, and I also wanted to try mussels with various sauces. I had the cream shallot mussels and they were fresh and delicious. It seems to be used as a date spot, but lovers eat the seafood platter. I recommend it as a mussel dish.
