They were extremely busy for the number of staff on. Service was incredibly slow and many mistakes were made, some items were entirely forgotten. The food was good, the fish was beautifully fresh and the vegetables al dente, if made very plain because they cannot adjust their recipes to cater to allergies. (That said, other dishes were also reported to be rather plain as well). Dessert was excellent. Not unreasonably priced but overall could do a lot better.

Went for a fairly impromptu evening meal with our friends who have a narrow boat temporariky moored here. Very nice - never been before tho knew of it.
Fairly small choice but good food recommend sides if not ordering starters.
Staff friendly bar had some minor issues with stock esp if bitter drinkers ... but not a problem
A. R.
Popped in for a Sunday roast and a drink at the bar. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. The food was great, but what really makes this place is the staff. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and welcoming without being overbearing. They are a real asset to this venue.

Amazing food and great service. The settings are lovely and i happened to work here as an entertainer for a couple's 40th which turned out to be a surprise wedding party! It is a great venue hire as they have a boat outside and the main resturant can easily be transformed into a dance floor!

So I'm not giving it a bad review as the rooms are lovely and it's very peaceful. The staff are amazing very friendly and attentive. Breakfast was lovely. Coffee machine in room is a nice touch.
The only thing I would say and the reason I would not stay again is the bed was rock hard I haven't slept at all the room was to warm went to open the window and it's locked.

Fantastic food, although i thought the trout starter was a little short on trout and a bit over powered by the fennel. Ale selection was poor too, but the neckoil on tap was good. The guinea fowl kiev was crunchy moist and delicious worked well with the sprouts. Loved it.
R. D.
What a find! Lovely homely comfortable room in a warm and welcoming pub / restaurant! Excellent breakfast included in the price. A cut above similarly-priced chain hotels. Would definitely recommend 👌👌👌

Place was awesome, service mediocre, food was good (but portion sizes small) and having only 2 vegetarian options in this day and age doesn't bode down too well. Overall great place but they ought to look forward rather than just trying to live on their legacy.
G. T.
Close, but not quite. We had a mixed evening, we were given the wrong wine and were told it was just a different vintage when it was a different producer. They did give us discount on said wine so that was all good.
The food.. well the scallops starter was brilliant and we both could not fault it, bloody delicious and perfectly executed - things were looking up... but then my main of halibut was very overcooked and being a simple dish that kinda killed the whole thing. The better half's guinea fowl was overall a good dish, but the guinea fowl was a bit over done too. So a bit of a frustrating evening, a few details corrected and I would be cooing, as it is I'm not sure if I'd go back.

Popped in for a drink. Great service. Friendly staff. Had a champagne/gin/lemon cocktail which was excellent.

Bar and room both provided a calm ambience after a long hard day. Spotlessly clean room, great facilities with welcoming staff. Unfaltering Hospitality to guests and restaurant customers alike. Full credit to Dan and team, made me feel eextremely welcomed for my stay. Keep it up!

Lovely hotel by the Kennet & Avon canal. Only 6 rooms but very clean and comfortable. Rooms reached via an outside metal staircase which on a rainy day would not be ideal !!Food was very good. All staff attentive and friendly. Would definitely stay again if in the area.
S. Q.
Too expensive for the quality of food. Paid 51 pounds for a 3 course meal, which was pretty average. Inside of the restaurant was really cosy, with a real log fire though.
P. J.
Superb evening watching Love’s Labours Lost performed by the absolutely fabulous quartet, Open Bar, after a scrumptious dover sole early dinner. Special mention to managers Dan & Nick for “going the extra mile” in terms of excellent organisation and top drawer service. Always consistent in delivery of a top quality dining experience.
K. G.
Nice tasting food. Let us set up for a birthday in the restaurant. When they brought the cake out, they decorated the board it was on too, which was a nice touch.
V. R.
Great place for cocktails at the start of your evening
Had a delicious light lunch outside on a warm sunny day.
Also, does evening meals.
Worth a visit

First of many trips here I think. The staff were superb. On the hottest day of the year they were in such good spirits. I can’t complain. About anything. The food was lovely. You could taste the alcohol in the cocktails 😅 I’m looking forward to coming back.
S. L.
Mid-week business dinner, wonderfully attentive staff, great surroundings and the food was excellent ... what more do you need and to cap it off, free parking!
F. D.
Lovely roast & even better cocktails. Looked after us brilliantly & great with our 2 year old guest!

Fantastic lunch outside in the sunshine with a small group. Good service and the food was amazing, and the main reason I will be back for more. The succulent pig dish was my favourite. COVID protocols well followed based on current rules with masks worn indoors and by staff.
C. G.
What a lovely place ,great setting, great friendly cheerful staff. Also fab breakfast. We will be back.
B. D.
This is a hidden gem! Amazing food, friendly attentive staff, the interior space is unique and a nice selection of outdoor seating if the weather is favourable. All positioned on the waterside of the Kennett and Avon canal. Woud highly recommend!

Beautiful cosy rooms with high quality refurb and appliances. Dinner and breakfast were both brilliant. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Would highly recommend and would definitely return when next working in Reading.
P. N.
Amazing location with kept period interior, which offers a great dining experience. Food is amazing!
O. L.
Tasty food and great service. I had the artichoke and roast veg gnocchi and the sauce was seasoned perfectly. The brownie dessert is also a generous size so I recommend arriving hungry!
t. C.
What lovely people, we were stuck on the canal as navigation was closed due to a lock gate being broken, owner and staff so helpful, allowed us to moor on their jetty and gave us lots of help. Had a fabulous meal last night really high quality food service excellent. Highly recommended.
S. L.
The Service was fantastic and very friendly, we had a beautiful Sunday roast and a gorgeous chocolate brownie nemesis you can also take your dog and they provide the dog with water and treats on their own little plate highly recommend.
L. F.
Gbooked for food after work on Friday evening. The service was great. The food was okay but not for the price. Seating is great, the covid measures are fab. Breads we're good. Starter and mains were a big let down. Deserts were nice. Unfortunately they didn't have the 75cl rose champagne which was a shame but when they have such a limited bubbles menu stock is key. Bill for two was just shy of 200 which is high for what you get. First visit was great but second disappointing. Brilliant staff and service helped with the poor food.
J. K.
New to me, looked nice, wasn't disappointed. Very very nice service, no pressure, messed up mains order, but didn't detract from quality. Given a cute birthday platter. Couldn't recommend more for a quality, lovely for lunch (and probably dinner too).
D.
We came for the cocktail making experience and dinner. Both were were excellent quality and value for money.
R. S.
Lovely location next to the canal. Friendly, welcoming staff. We were passing and only popped in for a coffee, but were very impressed.
S. H.
Great food . Great service and really enjoyable evening. Highly recommend
G. T.
Very attentive and friendly staff. Food is of very good quality. Portion sizes for some options could be a little larger, but overall a great place to have a meal!
J. f.
Good service. Didn't enjoy dish I ordered unfortunately but would go again.
S. B.
Lovely Wedding dinner here with Fanny and David. Very comfortable rooms. Thank you!
A. W.
We visited the restaurant of this hotel for dinner, whilst taking part in the governments "eat out to help out " scheme.
The food was truly delicious and the service was excellent.
We ate a selection of there nibbles to start (honey glazed chipolatas, popcorn shrimp and boccocino salad) then followed this up with mains; 2x fish and chips, 1 chicken supreme and one chicken Milanese. All were delicious
This plus a bottle of red wine, pint of lager, glass of Prosecco and 4x soft drinks all for £150. More expensive than we would usually go for but well worth the money and helped by the government scheme.
T. G.
Lovely venue, staff were friendly and efficient. The food let it down though, at least my fish and chips wasn't great. The fish was over cooked and the batter tasted burnt. The rest of the family's food was good, just mine wasn't. I've eaten there multiple times and it's always been good, so assume this was a one off. But a shame none the less.
S. N.
Can't fault food, drinks, service or location in the past 2 visits. Exceptional, personalised service. Brilliant location. Food and drink quality excellent. A must visit.
P. E.
Fantastic setting by the river, great food (crab linguine was excellent, and my friend's pork crackling was tremendous). Topped off by great service, especially from the verywarm Manager
J. W.
Amazing food. The atmosphere was lovely. Waitress was very friendly. Ordered the baked brie starter and it was huge! The lamb was fantastic. A real shame I didn't have room for pudding (a good excuse to come back again!). Will definitely be coming back, already looking forward to it. The building itself is quite interesting too and it was a nice touch to have a fire in the garden to sit next to on a cool evening. Lovely position by the river too.
A. H.
Very good meal and enjoyable eating experience.
C. A.
Too expensive for the food. It was said pigs in blankets and on the plate i got one small pig in blanket and a lot of potatoes:))
K. C.
Highly recommended 👌. Food is absolutely gorgeous. The atmosphere is great and very relaxing. Staff are friendly but professional and everything seemed to be running like clockwork. 👍
C. F.
Great food and terrific service in a lovely setting by the canal. Very good covid secure procedures. Brilliant place for dinner with friends and/or loved ones.
V. P.
One of the best restaurants in Reading I have been to so far. The prices are bit a higher, but well worth the price. Even though we had Christmas there the service was super quick and about 40 people were served under 5 minutes. The food presentation was outstanding, and the food was tasty. Free onsite parking. Having said that it is worth spending time here.
S. T.
Very nice stake the chips missed a bit and a tad pricy especially the wine
T. G.
Really nice hidden stop in central Reading, quiet and next to the river. Great food and very friendly staff. Hidden gem.
V. N.
Amazing food and services. Cocktails were only Ok in my opinion and over priced for what they are. However the food makes up for it , my favourite was the arancini starter. Very nice setting and again I can just compliment the service we have serviced.
E. W.
I love it here. Great service and delicious food. The servings are generous. The staff make it what it is. It feels so special, much better than the bigger chain restaurants!
L. R.
A lovely evening not spoilt by a waitress accidentally dropping some glasses. A very quick clean up of the shattered glass by several members of staff ensued. Perhaps would have been nice to have been offered a complimentary drink or suchlike but overall the situation was handled well.
J. H.
Very nice food and they have worked hard to make it Covid safe but still keep it classy. Love the triple cooked chips! And the brownie
M. C.
Having spent Saturday 31st October at the Roseate Hotel in Reading add not being very impressed with Dinner or Breakfast. we booked for Sunday Lunch at The Bel & The Dragon Reading .
Sunday lunch was excellent. Food was well presented and staff were friendly and attentive at the time of booking I did not release it was part of Fuller’s pub portfolio”on the 10th of October we had previously booked a room & dinner at the The Swan Hotel A 16th Century hotel in Staines, that sits on the river Thames.
where the food was also delicious. well done the The Bel & The Dragon Reading .
And well done to Fuller’s
I would definitely return to The Bel & The Dragon Reading and look forward to trying more Fuller’s establishments,
A.
Great drinks. Great vibe. Has a museum. Beautiful surroundings. Friendly staff. Highly recommend. Not had food there, but next time I will be looking forward to eating there :-)
C. T.
Lovely location and warm welcome. Good choice of drinks. Great place to spend a warm, sunny evening away from Reading centre
H.
Good food, friendly helpful staff and an interesting feel.
Three of us had a roast dinner. All were a good size. There were two big chicken thighs. The pork had good crackling. And for the beef our friend was asked how he wanted it cooked. One confusion, the three portions of roast potatoes were brought out in two bowls, they were also very nice.
The chocolate brownie came out cold and the salted caramel wasn't the best, hence the missing start. The Christmas pudding was good and the Bramble cocktail refreshing.
Definitely want to go back.
M. B. N.
Tasty food and goods customer service. The dogs was well made, great tasting and served on good timing. The meat was lean but could have used more seasoning. The desserts and soups were all tasty. Definitely a good choice if you're in the area.
Checkout the burrata, tasty burr a little too small portion for the price.
C. J.
When I made an online booking, I said it was a birthday treat for my friend. When we got there, the table was decorated with happy birthday confetti. The food was delicious and the staff were very attentive. After the main course, they brought out a wooden board with happy birthday piped on it and some delicious brownies. We were pleasantly surprised and my friend felt very special. Thank you for a wonderful evening. Will definitely go back.
E. W.
A wonderful, friendly pub with the atmosphere of a family-friendly local and the food quality of an exceptional restaurant. The staff go above and beyond to make you feel special and couldn't do enough! The food is excellent too. I recommend trying their seasonal cocktails too. Go for dinner to truly experience this pub in its glory. It feels top-class but has the laid back qualities of a locals pub.
D. B.
Brilliant team, lovely atmosphere and food. We were there to celebrate a birthday, they provided a surprise treat and a glass of fizz.
The manager was absolutely superb, so helpful and welcoming, he couldn’t do enough for us. Certainly recommend based on this experience.
J. S.
Had a great meal here. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Nice open fire to sit by while looking at the menu. Kids meals were very good, pork was good although it can on a wooden board which is something I am not a fan of. Fish special was scallops with panchetta which was very good. The portions were large and while they didn't come with green veg in some cases the side dishes would have been enough to share between two. To top it all we were presented a lovely treat for our daughters birthday of a big board with happy birthday on. Worth a visit.
D. K.
Lovely views of the canal, good food and service. Dog friendly too, and they provide treats and water for dogs which I thought was a nice touch
S. S.
Really amicable restaurant environment and outstanding menu and service, nice outdoor area and indoor is spacious
J. H.
Great food service a bit slow today
H. G.
Top tier food and drink, friendly and efficient staff inside an interesting building! Outdoor seating area is pleasant too
B. L.
Great place to chill out with a few drinks, really good service.
R. J.
Great location by the river Kennet in a tastefully renovated industrial setting (part of the Victorian Huntly and Palmers biscuit factory). The service was friendly, attentive and efficient. Great atmosphere and great food. We've had dinner at the Bel and Dragon several times over the past few years and have never been disappointed. Highly recommended.
J. A.
Lovely pub, really cosy and welcoming. Decent beers on tap. Food experience was less good. They had run out of both the things we wanted to order (which were also the most affordable things). The food that did come out was nice enough, but quite expensive for what it was, and glacial in pace. Nobody ever followed up to ask if we wanted pudding, so I just paid at the bar. Although even then the manager had to plead with his staff to have someone actually pay me some kind of attention. A real opportunity missed I think, could be lovely.
M. P.
Prompt, friendly service and lively atmosphere.
Presentation of food is excellent, especially for signature dishes such as Baked Alaska.
A few more vegetarian options would be appreciated.
Free on site parking is unusual in Reading.
Not cheap but worth it for a special occasion.
J. L.
Nice food, good service with bit of sparkle
J. B.
High end great quality food at fair prices. Menu is varied and interesting but still retains a few reliable favourites. Polite friendly staff. Accommodating if you want to go ‘off piste’ with the menu choices. Best Mojito I have ever tasted. We arrived by water on our little boat. They have great modern finger pontoon moorings and ask only that you patronise their restaurant. Seems a great excuse to substitute your mooring fees on a great meal to me!
A. P.
Great atmosphere and great food!
Staff can sometimes be a little slow regarding drinks (when the bar is busy drinks take a long time to arrive in the restaurant, we once even had food arrive before drinks).
However we love coming here, best fillet steak in town and the squid starter is to die for!
S. S.
Amazing time at Bel & Dragon both at the hotel and at the restaurant. The food was amazing and everybody was welcoming and warm
E.
The vegetarian options weren't great when I visited. I opted to get the curried vegetable soup from the list of starters and some zucchini fries with an aioli dip from the nibbles or sides as I didn't want normal fries, so I thought zucchini ones may be healthier. When they arrived they were battered and greasy. After 2 of them I couldn't eat any more and had to pass them over to my colleagues instead. The soup had a horrible aftertaste and didn't taste of much to begin with, but I had to eat it or risk starving. My manager ordered the beetroot egg salad with sun-dried tomatoes and it was swimming in so many sun-dried tomatoes she was put off. She enjoyed the soup but was skeptical about the salad. The venue itself is lovely and I'm sure some of the other choices are nice, but as a vegetarian I felt a bit backed into a corner with choices that nobody actually wants to eat.
G. D.
Food was excellent but service was appalling, especially comparing to other reviews. We were not advised about the menu so when ordering mains (which are small portions) that a side would be best to order too. One order was messed up (wrong sauce and side), this was for the person who’s birthday it was so they ended up eating out of sync with us as it took a little while to get sorted.
Overall, attention to detail from the server was just lacking, they appeared distant and not really listening much.
It’s a shame because the venue is nice, food is well cooked and tasty but the experience from service was well below par.
T. S.
I would like to revisit in the summer as I am sure it is even a better experience. Due to the height of the building it wasn't as warm as I would expect.
However the steak was amazing, service was good and very friendly. I can Imagine this place would be an amazing place to be during the summer. However it was still good in the middle of winter.
A. E.
Can’t fault this place! Stunning location, food is delicious and staff are super friendly. They take all the distancing and hygiene precautions seriously yet the atmosphere is great. Can’t wait to go back.
L. S.
Came for a birthday lunch on Friday whilst shopping with my husband. I have to say I'm not easy to please when it comes to eating out but everything was perfect. Beautifully clean, comfortable and relaxed surroundings. Service was great as was the food. My new favourite place
L. D.
Amazing place, great food, lovely staff, great manager and a great location. A lovely location and a relaxed feel. The manager was proactive in making sure that everything was good on our table and slips were quickly rectified. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!
G. H.
We have been to the Bel & The Dragon several times over the years, and it is always brilliant.
However, none of our previous visits can compare to the amazing experience we had for my Fiancée’s Birthday and my proposal two weeks ago.
I booked a table for dinner for the two of us and requested champagne to come between our mains and dessert.
And what can I say, everything was exactly as requested. Most of this can be attributed to the outstanding service we received from our waitress (Hannah I think?) who ensured that every moment of our evening was outstanding.
After my proposal she organised two wonderful wooden platters with chocolate brownies and fruit compote and messages written on them (congratulations and happy birthday) in candied cake decorations and chocolate.
She is an outstanding member of the team and deserves much praise.
She is a genuine asset to the restaurant.
Thank you again for ensuring that our evening was as enjoyable as possible.
G. S.
Interesting building housing good restaurant. Family friendly without ompacting on other diners. Next to canal museum and own car park. Can be hard to find but worth is. Likely busy in summer due to outdoor seating available on a converted barge. Small but quality menu. Range of photos/cartoons relating to Reading history. Good service. Reasonable cost.
A. J.
We stayed at the Bel and Dragon for a night in one of their large double rooms. The room was lovely - beautifully decorated in a shabby chic style but not overly so - the furniture, other than the bed, was slightly distressed and there was a "modern 1950s" feel to the room. It was also full of small details that make all the difference - a bottle of sloe gin awaited us on the desk, there was complimentary water in the room and tea / coffee facilities as well as complimentary whisky in the communal area.
I particularly liked the large shower in the bathroom - and the toiletries which were lovely.
Finally breakfast in the restaurant was delicious - there was a buffet with a variety of lovely pastries, cereals, yogurt and juices and then a hot meal from the breakfast menu (I'd highly recommend their English breakfast - I ate the lot).
We'd definitely stay there again, the staff are very friendly and helpful, we had a great night's sleep in a pretty room and a great breakfast.
R. P. V.
This is one of my favourite places in Reading. The staff are very friendly and this place is good regardless of the weather. Good wine list and selection of beers. Looking forward to trying some food to expand on this review. There's a wee museum next to this place (very small).
G. D.
My wife and I had lunch here today! Really warm, friendly welcome from the guys! We had the Haddock , chips and peas which were superb! I am from Swindon, and next Friday I am meeting a mate from Brighton to meet up! I have cancelled my previous booking and I will be bringing him here instead!!! I cant speak too highly enough of the Bel & Dragon! Roll on next Friday lol!!!!🙂
E. D.
Staff, ambience, food, service all wonderful
C. V.
Love it! The atmosphere is cosy. The food is delicious, well presented and very unusual. Drinks are great and staff is friendly. I would definitely recommend this place for a romantic dinner! Or for a party on the boat!
S. N.
The food here is delicious and the team did everything they could to make us comfy even though we were sat outside and it was torrentially raining!
L.
Staff were nice and food didn't take long at all to come out. Decor was nice. I had vegan pumpkin and maple risotto which was ok, it was nice but not wow. Thought it a little pricey for what it was.
R. H.
Food was absolutely delicious (new menu every month), and we had 25% off from a mother's Day voucher too! Only small gripe was slightly slow (albeit v friendly) service despite not being busy.
G. C.
Great front-of-house staff and lovely atmosphere and decor, just slightly off perfection due to pricey, under seasoned, small portions.
Have always loved the food here in past, but on this occasion, the food wasn't its' usual high quality: poor starter, decent main and amazing dessert.
M. H.
Very good food. A bit pricey but worth it
M. H.
A great improvement from a couple of years ago! The place is cool with delicious menu and variety of Sunday roasts.
We were seven in a group for Sunday lunch. The ambience was great and so is the location by the River Thames in East Reading with sufficient parking space. The staffs were efficient and knowledgeable including the ones at the reception and at the bar.
The roast chicken, pork and beef meals were well cooked but the variety and portions of the accompanying vegetables were not as described in the menu. The suckling pig meat was not really what the definition demanded - it was and should’ve been called a piece of roast pork that was very nicely cooked. The poor suckling pig must be rolling in his grave in Hong Kong after given such a treatment!
The wine list was great and certainly would recommend Syrah red that tasted superior!
After meal coffee was tasty and well served but I was surprised to see black powder at the base of the cup that also marked on top of the saucer! Maybe an oversight??
Male toilets were clean and well looked after but did not smell neutral.
L. B.
Came here to celebrate my sister in law's birthday this summer. There are lots of our door seating and the restaurant was lovely. Wow, the food was amazing I didn't know what to choose. My brother had the lobster, which be loved and I had the duck. I will definitely come back.
J. R.
Great food, amazing atmosphere.
T. C.
Excellent food, which is always beautifully presented. The staff are attentive and friendly. Most evenings you'll find an open fire inside or outside creating a very welcoming atmosphere in a beautiful historic building. Strongly recommend a booking as they get busy on weekend's.
S. I.
Love this place, food is of a great quality, staff are brilliant and the wine menu is perfect.
Really spaced out and covid friendly.
J. B.
Service and covid precautions excellent. Food was ok, not great. I had the cornish fish pie. It was dry and could have done with sauce. Veggies were fab. Have had better food on previous visits.
K. R.
Top class service good food and pleasant surroundings
J. W.
Possibly the only place in Reading worth visiting. Beautiful old buildings lovingly made into a decent bar and restaurant. Lots of outdoor seating and really a wonderful (free!) museum. Best bit in the museum is an olde gypsy caravan that was built in the area.
A. R.
Coming over for an afternoon coffee, the settings are nice and cozy, with good coffee to boot. You won't get any surrounding area views but that's not a big problem.
Service was decent and welcoming albeit a bit slow in cleaning up the table from previous use.
C. C.
Nice location and friendly staff, but the menu choices were either a bit questionable in some courses or the food was a bit small and unsatisfying (I can hardly remember the last time I didn't fancy a dessert or starter but none of them stood out to me, and I eat everything! And yet I was still peckish). Oh well the venue is cool!
N. P.
Friendly and helpful staff. Sat inside for a couple of hours chatting and looking out the door at the boats nearby. Only spent £8, but weren't pestered or badgered to spend anymore. Definitely worth a visit for somewhere peaceful with a relaxing atmosphere. Lots of choices of food and hot and cold beverages.
D. M.
Lovely food in a nice location. Given it was a Monday evening and it was quiet the service was a bit slow. We shared the squid starter which was lovely. The macadamia houmous was bland and watery, we did mention this to the waitress, but it was still on the bill at the end. I had the suckling pig which was excellent. Needed a veg side dish to make it a complete meal so I ordwred the cauliflower cheese which was really nice. children had the mussels which they both really enjoyed. I would go again hoping the service was better.
R. M.
Amazing food & superb service. I'll definitely be back! The entrance is kind of hidden as it's through the carpark but when you get there the restaurant/bar is beautiful, it's quite large inside yet still feels intimate. Thank you for the great experience!
C. M. C.
Not cheap, but I would argue very good to excellent value for money. The decor is pleasant, clean modern classic and the restaurant is spacious. We had one meal in a booth (Saturday) and one the next day at a table (Sunday).
The service I found just about right - attentive enough, but not overbearing or too friendly ("matey"). Everything that was brought to us was timely, and correct.
The foot itself was in our opinion, superb. The pork with crackling I very much enjoyed on the Saturday, but the roast beef we all tried on the Sunday was no doubt the highlight. The quantity (portion) was fine, not small in any way, and the beef delicious. I was even asked how cooked I wanted it, and when it came it was quite close to the rare I wanted (in the UK you're often lucky to get medium if you order rare).
The different bed I tried were good, the wine ok (complimented my food ok). The sticky toffee pudding on the Sunday is to be recommended, if they decide to put it back onto the menu!
So, in conclusion - not cheap, but worth it (if you're ready to pay the money) with good service in a nice decor. Hope to go there again :)
p. b.
Distinctly average food and service for the price ( after an initial greeting had to go find the staff to get a drink as it appeared they had forgotten us) I know the rage is always for al dente veg but that doesn’t mean undercooked and if they were jersey royals I was served (actually just new potatoes) I’m the Queen of Sheba. Shame as could be a memorable night out out because of unusual venue and setting but we all left feeling they could do so much better
S. L.
What lovely people! The place is great, the food was really nice but what lovely people!
Thank you so much
From the group that included Sausage!

This place is set in an area of Reading you probably wouldn't make a point of visiting, but you should. Set on the historic Riverside in a fantastic well preserved building, the food is excellent, service is amazing and atmosphere friendly and dare I say it sophisticated.
D. B. B.
fantastic venue , friendly staff , good food
S. M.
Went for Sunday breakfast when visiting friends. The location was stunning & the decor and building gorgeous. I ordered eggs Benedict with avocado but was suprised to see I had to order bread separately. Also with brunch being so popular nowadays, was suprised to get there at 1030 am to be told we needed to order asap or miss breakfast
E. D.
I love this place. Always a warm greeting by the man at front of house at the Bel and Dragon in Reading. The staff are so freindly and attentive. Food is delicious. A favourite for me and my husband.
M. v. S.
Wonderful date night restaurant, tucked away behind the big reading retail park. Yet as you park in the car park, you could be on a lovely stretch of a city canal. It's got a lovely boathouse for the summer, but even the inside of the restaurant is impressive. To call it a pub isn't doing it justice, as it's tall ceiling and nautical decor give it a far grandeur air.
The food is really good, and the wine list is even better. If you love wine, they have their own cellar and limited edition bottles to die for.
That said, if you don't want to spend the moon, you can probably have a really decent 3 course meal, with a glass of wine, for about £50/60 a head. If you go with the really good wine, that can easily double.
Had the pink squid with sweet chilli jam, and the duck confit, all beautifully cooked. Definitely recommend the roast potatoes as a side to everything.
The baked Alaska was impressive and baked on our table, although the ice-cream was probably the least impressive of the whole meal. Still, having had other deserts here, I suspect that's because theres only so much you can do with ice cream!
Highly recommend.

Went to the Reading Bel and Dragon for lunch yesterday, a table was booked for 2pm. Everyone arrived before the time booked and the restaurant was fairly empty inside but there were people outside.
Our waitress took our drinks order but these were very slow in coming. Our food order was taken.
Eventually after about 10 minutes our drinks arrived.
We waited 50 minutes for our food to arrive which was not hot, some of the meat contained a lot of gristle. Yorkshire puddings were tough, the vegetables could have been a lot better, very stringy sampire, the beans had not had their stalks removed. Also not hot when I go out for a meal I expect good food, properly cooked and hot.
We had a good waitress who was very fed up with the situation and said they were short staffed and with what was going on.
If we book for a meal we expect hot food, well presented. If a restaurant cannot cope with the numbers it should inform people earlier in the day as people do have other commitments. We expect better for the price
M. N.
Visited the restaurant. Excellent food and service! On a sunny day the perfect table by the river. Big indoor space too! THE BEST apple Turnover to share!!
L. H.
We visited post covid lockdown when we still had to sit outside, weather was a little chilly and no outdoor heaters but the food, drinks and service were top notch
N. B.
Lovely friendly staff who allowed us to try a couple of wines when we weren't sure what to order.
G. D.
One of the best restaurants in Reading.
I recommend to reserve. Great food prices can be little bit higher but the quality an service worth it. Excellent to enjoy with family and friends. Big car park. =O]
S. B.
Good food, room needs hanging closet & hair dryer
G. B.
Bel & The Dragon has long been one of our favourite restaurants, and absolutely my favourite space with its high ceilings and exposed ironwork harking back to its industrial days. If I could live in it, I would!
Jenny was happy to show us around The Majestic when we popped in for Sunday lunch, we fell in love with it and booked it for our post-wedding meal on 1st April this year. Jenny continued to be helpful, providing information over email and telephone calls.
We were able to decorate the day before, although we kept it simple as we loved the look & feel of it already. We just added some colour with table confetti & our wedding favours.
After our ceremony at Reading Register office, we had champagne & mingled in the bar for an hour or so before our guests (40 of them) were gently shepherded onto the boat while we were held back for a proper announced entrance - something we hadn't asked for or expected, but was a lovely touch! We wanted a relaxed atmosphere, with everyone on one long table enjoying excellent quality food (as always) and we were really looked after. Perfect.
The only hiccup on the day was that the table flower centrepieces delivered by our florist in the morning failed to make it onto the boat, they'd been put in the cellar to stay fresh and were forgotten about. I'll be honest, I didn't notice they were missing until it was time to leave as the boat just looked so darned pretty!
I only wish had been licenced for civil wedding ceremonies a few months ago - we'd have had the whole event there!

Lovely cosy and warm place to enjoy a sociable drink or meal. The service is excellent and the food is wonderful. With seating outside as well it is possible to enjoy a drink outdoors ofnthe weather permits. It may not be an old pub but with a lovely log burning fire in the building it is possible to enjoy a cold beer in front of a beer even when the weather outside is freezing.
E. D.
Food was very good. Service was poor. They seemed more interested in looking after couples and talking to them than getting us another bottle of wine or glasses. I had to get up three times to ask for drinks, glasses or the bill.
T. T.
Amazing food, the duck I had just fell off the bone. Open seating so don't expect much privacy from this costly fine dining experience. Cost £65 for two people (mains and desserts)
T. R.
Great atmosphere and top notch food. A real gem in Reading and worth a visit. Service is generally excellent but can be patchy. If you want a relaxed, premium food and drink then you're in the right place.
P. F.
Great location on the river. Always good food and great service. Highly recommended.
A. A. S.
The place has very nice decoration, but the quality of the food for the price you pay is not in my opinion very well compensated. It's easy to get there and park in the door, but I do believe they could do better food for the price they have.
T.
Excellent food quality, if small portions. Drinks were of a reasonable price and the staff were very pleasant. I had a great time here.
R. B.
Excellent service and good quality food and drinks. Doesn't always feel that busy and it's a shame that often the outside area is in shade and can be a bit cold else it would be a great spot for a post work drink. Don't miss the mini museum next door either.
T. C. B.
Amazing food in gorgeous renovated space. Very friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. You can even moor up here if you arrive by boat!
M. R.
Very nice pub, particularly on a sunny day to have a drink by the river, not many puns in Reading offers the river view and quality at the same time.
I haven't tried the food yet hence only 4 starts but I'm looking forward to come back and try some.
n. f.
Good service! We went to celebrate my birthday. They gave us a special birthday dessert. Nice foods and atmosphere. Must love to go again!
B. P.
One of my favourite places in Reading. Only eaten there once, and the food was fantastic. We take the dog with us when we go for a drink in the bar and they're always very accomodating.
P. M.
Great food and great drinks. Staff are on the ball and go out of their way to make sure you have a good time. Bit on the pricey side but worth every penny.
A. W.
This is one of the best places to eat in Reading. It is a lovely location away from the business of the Oracle with a varied menu and friendly staff.
A. S.
We only had drinks here, and didn't eat. Location is lovely, and top of the list of places for a quiet drink on a sunny summer afternoon. A little pricey, but worth a trip.
S. O. P.
Amazing food & and 5* service as always! We've been coming here for years as a couple and now as a family. Very welcoming to families, but retains a calm & pleasant atmosphere.
R. L.
Food and service usually really good.
K. O.
Have been here several times for family meals, lunch with friends etc. I even hosted an art exhibition in the Turbine House just behind and the staff and service were always excellent. :) Highly recommended.
M. C.
Went here for Christmas Dinner. The food and service were both excellent. The restaurant is a converted biscuit factory and makes for a pleasant dining experience.
N. A.
Food is without any doubt nice but this place loses 2 stars for the service which is very, extremely, ridiculously slow and the staff is not very professional at all. They messed up with the bill, orders and they haven't been professional at all. And it is very expensive. The good food is not worth their high price.
K. S.
I took my boyfriend here for a date night and we had a lovely time. They had put little love hearts over the table and candles which was a nice touch.
I chose the pigs in blankets which were georgous (best I've tasted) and the crab linguini which was also a really lovely dish. My boyfriend also enjoyed his meal.
The place it's self is a real hidden gem, a really cosy winter restaurant to come to, even a little log fire outside.
We had a lovely evening and will be back.
Thank you :)
L. D.
The food was good. Very good. The only thing putting me off was the length of one of the waitresses grubby nails and chewing chewing gum.
Not very hygienic
L. O.
Lovely ambience and food and drinks. But staff weren't wearing visors or face coverings. Nor were any customers on arrival. No obvious track and trace either
A. J.
It's always a pleasure to eat at the Bel (or even just to pop in for a few drinks). The staff is very friendly and the food is invariably good.
R. H.
Food always great but service has been seriously disappointing. Overcharged us as well (whole bottle of sparkling!) and when we called it out the waitress seemed to know how the mistake had happened...
S. H. T.
Good example of a modern European/British casual dining, and yet still feels 'formal' enough for a special occasion. Started with the juicy lightly battered whitebat and - again - I had the suckling pig to follow. Such a rich jus! Washed down with a Malbec.
Service is always good. They were busy, so was slightly slow to get seated etc, but apologies forthcoming and was all good.
Lovely canal-side setting. You can park there, but a walk along the water from Reading is good.
D. L.
I give this spot a thumbs up. Definitely worth a return trip. Prices were fair for the quality of the food. Atmosphere is similar to a place in Columbus I loved.
K. N.
Only popped in for a drink but the service was great. I had a cuppa and it was brought over in a big pot made with tea leaves and they supply a little strainer. It was a lovely touch.
D. B.
Great service for a valentines set menu, timely and organised. The food presentation was incredible and the taste, sensational. The table was also decorated with a valentines theme.
M. W.
Meal ok. But they never asked me for refill of my wine which was very annoying! They need training on how to focus on upselling and refilling. Costs more happy and restuarant makes more money.
J. S.
Really friendly staff, lovely cosy atmosphere and customers were all seated separately so a really good place to go in the current climate!
N. R.
Beautiful building and good (if somewhat overpriced) food.
Drinks are likewise expensive and they have a novel way of serving the house wine in an oversized bottle for you to pay for what you have drank (inevitably more than you think).
One of several Bel & the Dragons in the region.
G.
Great service from the team made a memorable evening. Baked Alaska was fantastic.
M. M.
Brilliant food in a fantastic location. In summer it's nice to sit outside by the river, and in winter it's always tastefully festive inside. Not the cheapest place to eat, but well worth it.
T. C.
Friends birthday meal. Great food and company.
C. L.
If you want to have a dining experience that is a bit different to mainstream, give it a try. They change the menu monthly and have interesting dishes. The portions are quite small and a bit pricey. Very limited options for vegetarians.
g. K.
Good environment, good location, food was good too. I would say food is over priced and very less quantity. Service was good.
F. O.
Great atmosphere, great food, a bit on the pricey side. Worth a visit. They are having a new years eve party there this year too 😁
L. S.
Great menu though tricky if you are a gluten free vegetarian. Fantastic atmosphere and decor. Friendly staff
k. S.
A great hot chocolate - pity about the exceedingly rude British patron who screamed at the staff as her brocolli was underdone...
I can tell you the only underdone thing was her manners.
Staff you guys are doing a sterling job, pity about the aforementioned individual.
T. P.
Great food, great service. Love it there.
Can be a little noisy and some tables aren't very private but a great location and a lovely place for a special dinner.
L. M.
Fancy food at a reasonable price and without the miniscule portions. The choice is good and the selection of wine and beer is great. It's a bit expensive but for what you get it's pretty good value.
L. J.
Lovely meal, reasonably priced! However I do not agree with the 12.5% being included in the bill! I'd rather give the waiter /waitress the money.
K. D.
Only stopped for a cup of tea, staff were friendly & it was nice sitting outside overlooking the river. Will definitely go back for a meal.
s. 0.
One of the best restaurants in Reading. Top location too. Many happy memories from here over many years
A. S.
Atmosphere and decor are great. The food was not that good. It seems like everything was frozen, and just heated up and arranged on a plate. Not worth the price.
T. W.
Peaceful vibes. Lovely staff. Great food. Nice selection of beverages.
J. W.
Nice spot for a drink slightly outside of the town center. Plenty of offers on drinks but the food was expensive prices for wetherspoons quality
N. J.
Very nice, if not spectacular, food in a great environment. Steak was cooked exactly as requested and duck was very nicely done too. Would definitely visit again.
c. b.
One of nicest places I have been to in Reading for lunch, great views, very nice inside as well, with excellent service. Good food and snacks. Free parking.
D. W.
Popped in for space to work on a very hot day. The service was excellent and the lunch menu reasonably priced. A nice lunch with great service and wifi. Thank you!
J. B.
Awesome food even better staff! Such a lovely place to distress and relax on a Saturday afternoon. I highly recommend 😊
N. S.
Great Food and Ambiance,
its a Treat for Non-Vegetarians,
Herbivorous may wish to avoid or be ready to choose from a limited set of options !!
Has on spot parking , which is a great asset,
L. W.
Excellent food and service in a chilled and interesting atmosphere. Highly recommended for all age groups.
B. D.
A Friend Hired "The Barge" for a surprise 60th Birthday meal. Meal/Staff/drinks/atmosphere all first class. Recommended.
C. H.
Great food at reasonable prices, friendly staff & the opportunity to moor your boat for free, makes this a definite must-visit.
The Riverside museum is actually part of this establishment.
M. C.
Lovely restaurant. Great atmosphere. Friendly and relaxed service.
A. G.
Great little location by the river, a little out of the way for town but not too far. Really good food and atmosphere on offer for dinner out.
A. A.
Cannot compliment this place enough. The food is always beautiful and the staff are always lovely. My favourite restaurant in Reading.
G. M.
Delicious food, delicious drinks, homely feel to the place and a nice location this place seems to have it all but with the pricey alcohol and quite small food servings I can't give it 5 stars.
J. M.
Beautiful setting. Great bar/restaurant. Boutique rooms. Lovely people
M. L.
Really lovely staff, good food and atmosphere.
R. D.
Lovely bar and restaurant with regular live music. Cosy interior. A bit pricey but the food is well worth it!
W. S.
The staff were lovely but the food was disappointing and over priced. It's a shame as they used to be really good.
J. L.
Tasty food and welcoming staffs. We will come back soon
N. W.
. Such friendly and happy staff. We only went for a drink, but I'll rate again when we go back to eat
J. M.
Very nice place and definitely plan to go again when sober. Was actually here before going to The Thirst Bear which I gave 2 stars. The B&D was nice though
c. m.
Great location and great food. Relaxed casual atmosphere and great menu - only issue is they serve everything on chopping boards not plates?!?
K. F.
Good food, friendly staff, spacious place. Definitely a great place to have dinner.
J. E.
Excellent food, good wine and beer selections. Booking pretty much required any time as its very popular with the locals.
S. W.
Have been here plenty of times now and every time is has been perfect. Excellent staff and service. Food is superb! Cannot recommend enough...
N. M.
Love it!! Amazing location and friendly staff. Most important: fair treatment if you are a solo customer!
S.
Food was good, service was a bit slow but it was reasonably busy. Huge mark up on the wines - shame.
C. v. d. B.
Best restaurant in town if you ask me. Great for romantic dinners, but also for groups of friends.
M. M.
Best Sunday roast in Reading! Also the only pub with ample boat parking.
K. F.
Lovely food and atmosphere tad on expensive side but had a calm chilled romantic dinner. Would visit again.
L. S.
Friendly professional staff. Great starters however the piece of beef was very disappointing for the price.
Y. T.
A very posh place and it has a great garden with clean bathrooms...
G. k.
Now one of my favorite bars/ restauraunts in Reading. Good decor, good food and brilliant area to relax next to the river
T. P.
Excellent venue with a very peaceful setting within Reading town centre. Enjoyed a lovely meal, with great service.
S. I.
Really nice location, lovely looking pub. The food is good too, especially the tart tartan.
P. R.
Food ok. Bit pricey
A. F.
Top quality food, in a nice location next to the river - though the view is obscured by the large boat moored outside that can be used as an event venue.
J. S.
Beautiful location and decor. Brilliant menu for food and drinks. Staff are always exceptional.
S. O.
Great service in a lovely location. It is a seafood-leaning menu, but still has enough choice for non-seafood people.
G. D.
A great venue with an amazing team of staff!
The location is lovely, the food is great and the whole experience was top notch.
