Reviews of Clay's Hyderabadi Kitchen
I. S.
What a gorgeous place! Such unique flavours and dishes but all the spice and warmth that you’re used to from the Indian cuisine. We went for the pork belly, fried chillies, crab and chicken fry starters. The pork belly was sweet and aromatic and very good, but the winner were the fried chillies. Such a unique dish, never had anything like it! For mains we had village style lamb in a clay pot and paneer curry. Both absolutely gorgeous in their own way, the lamb was rich and earthy, the paneer curry was creamy and aromatic. Nothing was disappointing! Will come here again soon:

Highly recommend trying Clay’s; if you like Southern Indian Cuisine with a modern twist. I would suggest booking a table in advance; it can fill up quickly and is popular for locals (also open 4 days a week).
The ‘clay pot lamb biryani’ is a must to try. Along with the ‘Bhuna venison’ and ‘John’s mixed basket of paratha’.
Overall great service and also the owner/chef was welcoming to come and greet the customers after the meal; nice touch.

A trip to Clay's feels like a pilgrimage that everyone should undertake at least once. We were strongly recommended this restaurant by a good friend, subsequently ordered several meals via their nationwide delivery during the pandemic. With restrictions finally easing we undertook our little pilgrimage to eat there in person, it was worth the wait!
The wine list is quite fascinating! Though it didn't have varieties we best enjoy with Indian food we found an Alsatian Pinot Gris that sung with Clay's food. We didn't know where to start with the dishes, thus took the recommendations from our friendly waiter. The mirchi chat and prawns to start really set the scene, but by golly, did the beef mahikhayla and chinta chiguru steal the show. Please visit, you will not regret it.

The food here is absolutely amazing. We started getting their vacuum packed meals during lockdown and they were so good we were excited to go and eat in the restaurant. We were not disappointed. The menu is creative and so tasty. The service is informal, warm and friendly. Genuinely an incredibly pleasant dining experience. This is my top recommendation for dinner in Reading.

Excellent service and food. Not the typical curry house menu but good to get a change. Rice crackers are a nice start. Cauliflower, pork and prawn starters very good. Definitely going back.

Visited after reading all the positive national reviews and wasn't disappointed! Delicious food and incredibly warm and welcoming service. A brilliant experience.

What an amazing dining from home experience. One of the best authentic curries we have had. I just hope they carry on delivering once they open again. The meat was so tender, and the flavours were exceptional. Thanks for the amazing experience from home. We have recommended this to all our friends. Keep up the great work!

Best Indian restaurant in Reading (I've tried quite a few)!
As many reviews say, this isn't your normal Indian restaurant, this is way better.
The menu isn't massive but the options are all enticing and really different to the norm, the drinks menu is excellent too including a couple of delicious local breweries on tap (the excellent Double Barreled and West Berkshire Brewery) and a great selection of gin and rum.
I had pork belly to start and chicken with tamarind for main. Both were excellent, depth of flavour and spice were perfect, and the sides of rice and mixed paratha were super tasty too.
Last but not least was the service, I'm not sure of his name but he was superb. Very attentive, very professional and very helpful throughout the meal.
Will definitely be going back to try more of this lovely menu.

Be ready for a foodgasm if you are going to this place. Amazing people and overwhelming food.
Being vegetarian and from India, i know what authentic Indian food is and they are doing a fabulous job making it taste same or even better.
1. Paneer majestic 😍
2. Baingan bhaigara
3 Paneer biryani
Best restaurant in Reading for sure.
K. L.
Food was absolutely fantastic. A real treat not your average "curry house" at all. Service very good and friendly attentive staff. Only one comment was it could do with something on the huge bare orange walls.

Visited Clays last night and hands down one of the best Indian meals, especially in Reading. Fantastic contemporary menu, service was great and a very friendly environment. Will absolutely be going back 👍
J. B.
Wow. Completely redefined my experience of Indian cuisine. Every dish tasted distinctively different. What an amazing family business. Will be back! An amazing range of drinks too.

Stunning food. I've travelled relatively extensively over India and this is the first time I've ever been to an Indian restaurant in the UK and gone, 'yes, this tastes just like the food in India'. Which is a great thing!! Since being to Clay's, I can't stop thinking about it. My friends and family are sick of me banging on about it. The food was so good it honestly brings a tear to my eye when I think about it. Luckily I'm booked in to go twice in the next couple of weeks!
M. J. L.
Excellent service. Excellent food. Authentic and delicious. Good prices. Approx 20-25£ per person. The king prawns starters are wonderful.

Clays have really blown us away during the lockdown with their incredible meals at home, and we had been looking forward to trying the new menu at the restaurant now that they are able to reopen. Our already high expectations were exceeded - the range of new dishes is absolutely spot on, and of course the spices are perfect. This is such a treat and we can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu soon. Great service, lovely atmosphere, excellent value and of course the best food in Reading!
B. S.
This restaurant is amazing. You must go. The food is fabulous. The staff are absolutely lovely & will go out of their way to look after you. Highly recommend.

Loved it, such a lovely welcome from the staff and beautiful food! Would recommend the marinated prawn starter for sure and the paneer balls in a sweet fragrant sauce were just beautiful.

I'd heard great things about Clay's from several people that frequent the restaurant, so wanted to try it myself.
3 of us went on a Tuesday evening and we booked about an hour in advance. Although they may have been able to seat us without having booked, I was turned away on a Thursday evening as they were too busy so didn't want to risk it.
Being seated to service was very quick, we had our drinks order served and then had some time to choose our food. When the waitress returned, she gave good suggestions for mains and was attentive during the meal, making sure we were enjoying our food. During the meal the manager also came over and made sure we were having a good experience for my first visit.
The waitress again gave good recommendations for dessert and liqueurs and we were happy to have asked as the Sweet Potato, Chocolate and Chilli liqueur she suggested sounded odd, but was lovely!
Great food and great staff and we will definitely be returning. I'd recommend booking.

Recently went to have another meal after they re-opened. The best indian restaurant in Reading. If your looking for your standard Rogan josh or jalfrezi, you won't find that here but what you will find is regionally inspired dishes which are sensational. You won't be disappointed. The village style lamb cooked in the clay pot was outstanding.
M. J. L.
Excellent service. Excellent food. Authentic and delicious. Good prices. Approx 20-25£ per person. The king prawns starters are wonderful.
N. S.
Great food, the quality & taste have always been consistent whenever we have come here. A must visit for a different experience in Indian cuisine. A great addition in Reading.
M. S.
Been here twice in two weeks and everything I've ordered has been outstanding. The food is not only different from a normal Indian restaurant in the UK but the quality is very high and the Indian Shiraz they have on the menu goes down rather nicely too! Would highly recommend visiting!
L. W.
Absolutely gorgeous. Honestly, it was more of a taste adventure than just a meal. Beautiful blend of spices - especially the clay pot. Lovely scenery too. Will definitely be coming back here!!
S. K.
My honest opinion, wanted to pickup chicken biryani but ended up eating other biryaanis becoz this dish allowed to eat inside not for take away. Overall food is tasty and has typical aroma (Hyderabadi). Better than any other spots in Reading area. Even kids loved paneer biryani. Please note, Biryani is not pocket friendly (CB-£15) but delicious. I really liked take away packing. Strong paper pack (see the pic), no plastic used.
P. T.
An interesting and tantalising selection of dishes, most of which I've not come across on a menu before or using game. We ordered one of their nationwide takeaways delivered to our home in Norfolk. Superbly packaged and arrived in perfect condition.
The reheating instructions were easy to follow and thorough and the food was fantastic. We have family who live locally and cannot wait to visit in person when lockdown is over.
Absolutely delicious, do yourself a favour and book a delivery slot
B. S.
This restaurant is amazing. You must go. The food is fabulous. The staff are absolutely lovely & will go out of their way to look after you. Highly recommend.

Excellent food. Ordered a number of heat up at home dishes. Came well packaged and the main courses heated up beautifully in a pan of hot water (can also be heated up in the oven or microwave) . Tasted as if it had come straight out of the chef’s kitchen.
The food flavours were outstanding and we will definitely order again. Oh, and the pouches are freezable so we’ve stocked up!
M. T.
Ordered a cook at home order (collected from restaurant) and it was excellent. Authentic, and different from most highly street ‘British Indian takeaway’.
Easy to follow instructions and still packed full of flavour - fresh and fragrant. It was all very well packaged with clear instructions
Will re-order soon and look forward to dining in should they reopen as a sit in restaurant

Great to finally get some proper Indian food rather than generic tomato sauce with chilli powder. Excellent vegan , veggie and gluten free options ! Definitely coming back.
P. H.
Love this place! Great independent restaurant in the centre of Reading. You are missing out if you don't visit.
H. O.
Absolutely delicious. We ordered from the heat up at home range and it arrived perfectly on time, well packaged and looked after. Heated it up in its bags and it was the nicest curry I've had in years. Quick, easy and because you heat it at home, hot! Cannot recommend it enough.
S. L. A.
Food served is authentic hyderabi and profoundly tasty, not your usual kind of curries found in many indian restaurants.
J. L.
We have been to Clay's a couple of times. Always loved it as even though it is Indian, it is an Indian style food you can't get anywhere in Reading. As a beer lover, I also like the beer that is brewed specially for them (mango beer). The restaurant has a great atmosphere and the owners always take time to chat with people during their visit. We planned a birthday celebration for my son there which had to be cancelled due to lock down, so a couple of weeks ago Clay's started offering a delivery service and we took advantage of that straight away and could have a delayed birthday celebration. Today we received our second order and we can't wait to have it. Highly recommend the food and the restaurant.

Clays Hyderabadi Kitchen is without a doubt the best restaurant in Reading. The food there is to die for and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful individuals.
The team really made my 21st birthday an extremely memorable one, catering for myself and 15 of my friends. They were so kind to us all and their service was spot on.
Amazing starters, tantalizing dishes on their mains and don’t get me started on their desserts. They offer a really tasty Mango cider that goes great with their meals.
Thank you Clays!

Amazing food and wonderful atmosphere. Loved the wide variety of vegetarian options too!
A. F.
Lovely staff but not that impressed with the menu.

Fantastic food. Great range of dishes. The restaurant looks fresh and different to most other Indian restaurants. We had a great time and ended up giving in to having three courses. Two excellent and exclusive beers on tap too.
R. S.
Loved this small restaurant. Nice ambience & lovely staff. Interesting & varied food & drinks menus. We had the most incredibly fragrant biryani & cauliflower korma - both were beautiful. Also enjoyed the fresh lime with mint & excellent Hyderabadi IPA. Will definitely return to bring friends & explore the menu further.
E. D.
Lovely place with really interesting and tasty options. Not your standard Indian restaurant! Met the owner as well - great lady, wonderful hospitality! Wine list /drinks selection was varied. I liked the lime and mint drink. Totally vegan menu available as well if that's your thing. Highly recommended.
M. E.
An exceptional meal. As unfamiliar as we were with the menu each and every course and starter delivered. We will be back. Lovely.
A. S.
Just had a wonderful meal at Clay's. The food was amazing and the service was great. We felt like we were visiting a friends home rather than at a restaurant. The food was very authentic like back home. The spicing and flavours were very good. The vegetarian options were great too. The waitress who served us was very friendly and the owner lady also came by couple of times to enquire if we had everything we needed. We used to drive to London to have this kind of food but don't have to any more. Can't believe it took us this long to find this gem of a place in Reading.
J. C.
Ordered several curries for delivery to Aberdeen (!), which arrived on time. Generous portions (2 between 3 would be plenty), delicious (especially the goat curry - really tender). Rotis were a nice change from naan. Highly recommended.
V. K.
An absolutely stunning meal! So different from many other restaurants. I was lucky enough to go with a large group so we were able to get a large selection of dishes and try them all. Every one of the dishes deserves a good review, but the standout dish has to be the lamb biryani, I've never tasted one that is so moist and with so many layers of flavour. Thoroughly recommend here to everyone
B. H.
My first time eating Hyderabadi good and now all curry will be compared to this.
The food was simply outstanding. Tasty, juicy, plentiful and so complex of flavour and texture.
You have to do yourself a favour and eat here. The service was charming and the place is simply decorated, but that isn't why you are going there.
Enjoy the food. Try as many different dishes as possible and have a lovely evening
C. C.
A beautiful small restaurant with 2 floors, homely and run by a lovely team. No "English curries", all traditional Hyderabadi food, with lots of vegan and meat options.
We celebrated a birthday here, and were given a bottle of bubbles by the owner. All left very full and without too much of a hit on the bank balance, even with 2 courses each. Cannot recommend enough, and can't wait to go back!!
Support your local independents!

Simply the best meal I have ever eaten. This small restaurant is an absolute gem.
H. H.
We ate here last night and it was AMAZING!!. It was quite busy and we had a small dilly dally around where we sat but the staff (Amy and the lady who i think was the owner) were fantastic. We were advised that all dishes were medium spiced but definitely hotter than that which was a great thing. The food was divine. Beautifully spiced, great quality ingredients, just stunning. This is a true gem. It is pricey but absolutely worth it. My husband is a hard man to impress and he said it was the best curry he has eaten for 20 years (since he lived in Malaysia).
T. G. S.
visionaries, they pack the food in vacumme packs and they send it to you by express mail. They have studied well what food can be sent like this and it comes to you, that you do not believe how good it is. I do not know who has had such an idea, but a genius in the kitchen and shipping.
J. A.
Delicious curries, seriously very nice curries! Excellent vegan menu. Staff are nice. Ambiance is casual; not fancy date night.
Would prefer more chutney options with the rice crackers (they don't have poppodoms).
B. R.
Fantastic food. Seriously, some of the best tasting dishes we have had in a very long time. My wife and I have visited twice and both times have been exceptional. The food has a bit of heat but certainly not enough to blow your head off. Trust me when I say you need to try the venison.

Best Indian food in town by miles! It's a huge treat to come to Clay's, I'm working my way through their varied menu as fast as I can, although many of the dishes are so good I keep ordering them again and again (in particular the paneer starter and the aubergine curry main - oh and the flavoured rotis). They also have a fantastic gin menu which I have also made good progress through! The staff are all lovely and the lady owner is so attentive and enthusiastic towards her customers to ensure they have a great experience. Have brought many different friends here with me, and all of them want to come back ASAP :) Highly recommended if you like excellent quality, original dishes and a pleasant atmosphere.

Great find in reading , fantastic menu and great portions . Highly recommend

I cannot praise this place enough, praise the Lord for true authentic Indian food that is not bog standard, quite the opposite actually, I will never eat in another Indian restaurant other than this one base on their entire family aura and friendly service topped off by the best food I've tasted outside of my own home in a very long time.
If you love Indian food and want a proper meal without disappointment this is the place to go.
Unbelievable through and through.
E. S.
Honestly, the best indian in Reading. Ok, so it is a little pricier but it is worth it. I'm not a vegan but I've had a few of their vegan dishes and they're amazing. We spent £40 for 3 breads, a paneer biryani, a tomato dhal (vegan version) and a veg curry (vegan version), we ate the whole lot the two of us in one sitting. AND I WOULD SPEND IT ALL AGAIN NEXT WEEK.
E. A.
This is one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve ever been to. Every dish is amazing and the atmosphere is lovely.
During COVID, their takeaway process couldn’t be easier and the food is just as good!
A. L.
Very different experience from your average Indian restaurant. For a start, many brews are supplied by West Berkshire Brewery. Menu is limited but food is good and tasty. Service speed is OK and staff are knowledgeable. Restaurant has been open for two weeks and for 2 courses and three people I paid £83. Beer is pricey at £5 per pint. Worth going to.
L. H.
The quality of food you get through Clay's home delivery service is exceptional. I can honestly say we enjoyed every single dish - we ordered a mixture of starters, curries and rice. This is more like home-cooked food than 'standard' Indian restaurant dishes in the UK and you can really tell the difference. Particular highlights were the hara bhara kebabs, kothimeera karam chicken fry and the Goan-style prawn curry (ambot tik). Don't let the minimum order amount put you off: the great thing is that this is not take-away food to be eaten as soon as you receive it - it all lasts over a week. You take it out and prepare it when you like. The heating/prep instructions are clear and it's nice to know you have delicious food waiting in the fridge for when you fancy it.
A. A.
Delicious Indian food with a unique spin on Hyderabadi dishes. Claypot Biryani is sumptous!
D. R.
This is very much an authentic hyderabadi cuisine experience with a very diverse and interesting menu and great drink choices. The decor is simple but there is a lot of attention from the owners and service speed and quality of food was fantastic. Really enjoyed the evening and highly recommended. Would be considered pricier compared to curry houses but the quality of food speaks for itself.
S. I.
Over the past three years I’ve eaten in most of the Indian restaurants in Reading, searching for one with an interesting selection of dishes, strong flavours. I’ve lived and worked in India in the past, so I’m rather picky!
Anyway, finally I tried Clay’s tonight, and it was absolutely superb. Every dish — from the chicken livers to the beetroot roti, the baby aubergines to the lamb — was carefully flavoured, distinctive in its taste, and well presented. The staff were attentive and even gave us a taster of the beer before we ordered to check we’d like it.
Some of the reviews I read suggest it’s expensive; it’s not. Both of the main courses we had were less than £10, and the whole bill — two starters, two main courses, two beers, and a soft drink — was £50, which is very competitively prices for central Reading. Yes, you can eat cheaper elsewhere, but you compromise on quality.
I will certainly be going back to Clay’s next time I want an Indian meal. I had food envy looking at the biriani in particular, so that will be a must.
B. R. A.
We were a bunch of 9 guys who went for dinner and drinks to try this place out. The food was just brilliant. I am a BIG egg curry fan and the chef agreed to make it for us despite it not being in the menu !!!. And what egg curry it was - delicious. The starters, the Mango Flavored beer, the food and hospitality - 5 star !!. Going there again with family tomorrow night. Cant wait to have the egg curry again (hope they will make it !!)
H. S.
Super tasty - will go again, without a doubt. Everything has a slight edge on standard Indian / Pakistani food, the little bit of difference that really made it so much more interesting and enjoyable.
I'd say the decor is a little misleading - just doesn't look that inviting from the road and obscuring the door to the loos in the basement seating area with a screen would make it much more appealing. Once you've got your food though ... you'll forget all about those minor issues. Enjoy!
L. C.
Visited for first time the other evening with my husband for dinner. Shared quail pakora to start followed by two fabulous mains. Delicious, freshly cooked authentic Indian food - for proper foodies. Tasty mango beer! Served by friendly, efficient staff. Would highly recommend. Will be back!
L. A.
I actually laughed when I tasted my dish. The flavours were amazing! I now class all other Indian restaurants I've been to in Reading as 'mainstream'- usual menus, same basic flavourings, etc. This place is special. You find these sorts of niche places hidden around London, but Reading is lucky to have its own.
V. K.
There were some really good, unique dishes. The paneer majestic was definitely my favourite dish out of the onesI had. I would definitely recommend it. Staff were great as well, and quite friendly.
One thing I would critique however was that the dishes were a little bit too oily for my preferences. The tables were quite close together as well which could be a problem if it was really busy, which thankfully it wasn't when I went.
L. S.
Fabulous first meal at Clay's this evening. Next one already booked. Such delicious food and genuinely friendly staff. This has catapulted straight to my favourite restaurant in Reading spot.
EDIT Clay's remains my favourite restaurant in Reading. Yet again had a meal that has somehow surpassed the deliciousness of all previous visits. The flavours are just incredible. Very full and happy 🙂
S. H.
Had a fantastic meal here with lovely service, also very helpful with allergens and good for anyone gluten free!
A. R. M.
Best indian food i have ever tried. I am not an expert but eating the food and looking at the staff you really understand that they put their heart in their product: The food is all tasty, full of flavours and authentic smells. Since i tried Clays i havent visited any other indian restaurant. Talking about the service, the owner is really concerns about your wellfare and also gives you recommendations about food, tips about indian culture and traditions...lovely! . The rest of the staff are really profesional as well, quick, efficient and friendly. There is an environment that truly invite you to come back. Some reviews are talking about the price however I think that if you want to eat cheap you go mcdonalds but if you prefer real food Clays is 100% recommendable. With me they have a customer forever.
I. B.
The food was fantastic! From the Bagara rice to the Cut Mirchi, everything was delicious and nicely presented. The fresh lime with mint drink was probably the best soft drink we ever had in the UK. It reminded us of our time travelling around India. The service was also excellent... Thanks Sonia! We'll definitely be back.
M. A.
Incredible food and wonderful hosts - the personal touch makes all the difference. Didn't photograph the food because we were too busy eating it, but our group of three omnivores and a vegan left with full stomachs and big smiles!
I. M.
Good food and different from other Indian places in Reading.
Good service.
Portion sizes sensible unlike some places which are too big.
Hyderabadi IPA is recommended.
Visited 3 times so far and will be going again.

I have been to Clays 4 times now, and can honestly say its the best Indian food I have eaten. Everything is intensely flavourful and the food is immensely creative- sometimes I feel like I am re-discovering an often eaten ingredient- because the interpretation is so different than anything I have experienced before. Even the rice is a complete flavour sensation- perfumed and somehow smokey- each bite is heaven. Recently, Clays hosted our office Christmas party. I was so impressed by the organisation, the decorations, the creative one-off menu and the amount of effort that Nandana and team put into the night. It was an absolute success and I'm very grateful for all the hard work that went into it. I'll be back again soon to try more wonderful food, this is absolutely one of my favourite restaurants.

We went on a busy Saturday night with very high expectations based on the reviews here and on Trip Advisor. I am sad to say we were disappointed with the food. The biriyani is outstanding but the rest can use a lot of improvement.
Contrary to other reviews, we felt the service was excellent. The waitstaff were very attentive and went to great lengths to explain each dish and to let us know when to expect our food. They were very knowledgeable on the food itself - despite several of them just being students from the nearby uni. Service is slow - expect to spend 2 hours or more on a busy night but one doesn't mind this if the food makes up for it (which it didn't in our case). The owner and the chef made an effort to greet each table and ask how the food was. It felt like they knew a lot of the repeat customers.
The downstairs feels claustrophobic on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant likes to seat large parties in the basement. The low ceilings, the minimal space between tables, the noise, and the fact that the aircon wasn't switched on until the chef came down only adds to the unease for those who may prefer something quieter.
What was wrong with the food? It is not as authentic Andhra or Telengana as the menu suggests. Several of the item preparations could be rethought. Kodi chips had more batter than meat. Some of the chips were too chewy. Ditto with the mirchi chaat - the peppers were tiny compared to the batter around it and it is hard to taste the filling inside. I also had to explain to our guests that the mirchi bajjis were made more in a North Indian style than what we eat in Telengana and Andhra. The twice fried bindi should have been pan fried more before being deep fried. Our was therefore slightly raw. Moreover, bindi in Andhra comes with cooked onions, not the dried onions you can get in a box.
The description of the fish pulusu on the menu promises a homemade Andhra fish curry. The sauce looked like any base gravy used in restaurants. The fish itself was fresh but the dish just seemed to be missing something.
The pooris were small and oily. They also weren't as puffed up as they should have been.
The coconut dessert lacked any sort of flavour. The double ka meetha should be sweeter.
Which brings us to the biriyani. They slow cook the biriyani throughout the day in a clay pot. Given the time it takes to do this, it was explained to us that they can only make 35 pots in a day - which is a slight problem on a busy night. And as the menu suggests, they only put three pieces of meat (on the bone) in the biriyani. However the pot itself is big enough for two people to share meaning that one person gets lucky with two pieces of meat and the other gets just the one piece. That is not how biriyani should be shared!
I have purposely avoided mentioning the prices until now. We were a group of 5 and paid £120 with service. I have no qualms for paying for good food. I also never measure the average quantity they serve per pound. We regularly pay through our nose at some of the Indian restaurants in Mayfair but come away satisfied that it was a delicious meal and you forget the size of the bill. My problem with the prices at this restaurant is that none of us (and there were 5 of us) walked out feeling this restaurant was worth revisiting - definitely not for the prices they charge. If only the food had been better we wouldn't complain about the price.
I do wish the owners the best of luck and hope they take this review constructively.
R. C.
Clay's is a small venue serving uncommon dishes compared to most Indian restaurants. The portion sizes are smaller than most places, but this is more than made up for by the exceptional flavour. Every dish seems to have been made with more care and attention which shows when it arrives at the table. A really enjoyable meal all round.
Also, my partner discovered that they offer lassi on the drinks menu, which probably means we're going back!
D. T.
A great menu - nothing like the usual curry-hiuse offering. Interesting drinks too - Hyderabad IPA, who'd have known it. And piece de la resistance an non alcoholic gin served with a glass full of spices and a bay leaf tonic : great for this driver before am IPA. And the staff were lovely and attentive
S. P.
One of the best curry houses I've had the pleasure of visiting. Absolutely beautiful food, fast friendly service. You won't get a Tikka Masala or Korma here, which isnt a bad thing! Proper authentic Indian food with a very good vegan menu too. Can recommend highly and book table in advance.
R. A.
Firstly, all the negative comments are about the restaurant not being infant friendly which in my opinion is a great idea! Too many times the dining experience in indian restaurants is ruined by unruly kids running around being noisy so hats off to Clay's for enforcing this. Food is delicious and we come here atleast once a month. Highly recommended!
K. R.
Well worth a visit! Or maybe even 2!! Had incredable freshwater prawns and a monkfish curry to a family recipe YUM! Great service and welcoming staff. Great price too! Even got to chat with Mrs C. Approaching their 1st anniversary. Hopefully many more.

Shared a meal with an old friend. We ordered the chicken biryani and chicken and cashew curry. Both meals were excellent, good flavors with a good amount of heat. Friendly service and a nice drinks menu with mocktails for the drivers. Will definitely be back.

I visited restaurant with my daughter and her boyfriend on Wednesday. Atmosphere of place was fantastic, staff was friendly and smiley. I was mesmerized by really tasty and REALLY FRESH lime with mint and mango lassi. I have gluten free + diary free diet and I was surprised, that I could choose from nearly everything in menu. Food was absolutely amazing. Portions of mains dishes were really big. We werent able to finish it all, so we decided to take the rest to home. Moreover, me and my daughter tried Ophir Oriental and Pink Pepper Gin with natural Hibiscus tonic water- which were great combination with these dishes and they serve them with very nice garish. Thomas loved their own beer, IPA. At the end we tried onion dessert, which was stunning, I loved it. Thank you!!

This food is on another level! A whole new experience of flavours for me. We came with a group of 8, so got to try a number of dishes. Will definitely be coming back for more, and more, and more. The new 'go to' for me. Lovely, unassuming and charming hospitality and service.
W. T.
Lovely food and drinks, lots of unique dishes on the menu.
M. G.
Lovely food and warm welcoming ambiance ...
The biryani is just so flavoursome, you got to have it. The chicken chips and the Mango beer (you got to have it to believe it) are absolute winners.
You're missing some thing if you like hyderabadi Indian food and haven't eaten here.
P. T.
Me and my wife have visited this place twice
First visit was really good and the food experience was really fantastic.
We had ordered paneer biryani and trust me it was really good. We also had mixed rice cracker which were fresh and good.
Based on the above experience we were really excited and thought to try a different dish next time.
So we went after a week and we ordered bhindi fry, khatti Hyderabadi dal, paratha and beet root roti .
Bhindi was good
Dal was ok but as we had ordered that as a main dish we expected some good quantity. It was just good for one person. Not that I eat a lot but even to my standards it seemed less.
Paratha and beetroot roti seemed to be precooked and you may find them in some of the Indian store it seemed. So the experience of quality and fresh prepared food went down the drain 😊
Prices are at a higher side and obliviously no Indian is going to pay for precooked and reheated food if then can get the same from the Indian store
Anyway suggest to go for biryani it was good

Had a lovely time at Clay’s with a friend. There was some confusion with online booking which I did the day before but the restaurant called me and rebooked. Went on a Sunday at 2pm and it was nice and quiet. Waitress was very polite and took our orders quickly. Had the Paneer, Idli and Kodi chips to start then shared a chicken clay pot Biryani. Everything was hot, came out quickly and brilliantly spiced. Very happy with my experience.
H. K.
The food was tasty, served well. Tastes the best among the surrounding Indian cuisines in the town. Highly recommend it!! I will definitely give a second visit soon. Menu is limited!
C. P.
Lovely staff, really convenient location to Reading town centre. Some of the food was too spicy for me but that didn't stop me from eating it! Really nice variety as well if you're new to this type of cuisine!
S. H.
Freshest, tastiest curry I've ever had in Reading. Even better than Bhoj. Can't wait to go back. Great service, friendly and knowledgeable staff, local beers, excellent soft drink list.
A. P.
Ate from the vegan choices, liked the aubergine and dhal mains and rice, but starters, especially cabbage pakora, were too salty. Unusually serves West Berkshire Brewery local beers including Hyderabadi IPA which are great, and service was friendly and attentive, but decor is very spartan. Will return to try different dishes.
M. L.
Happy that we were accommodated, despite being wet from the rain. Service was great and the food exceptional, what a find!
V. D.
Had tasty vegetarian food, will visit again with rest of the family.
A. H.
Such a brilliant restaurant, we love the food here - it's completely different to anything we have had before. So full of flavour and really moreish. We have been many times and we've never been disappointed. It's great!
S. A.
Great food, a bit pricy vs similar local joints.
The staff was kind enough to accommodate us quickly given we didn’t reserve.
The staff forgot the complementary yogurt served along with the biryani, it was delivered finally 20 mins later only when reminded!
Decor was fine but lacked character.
R. Z.
AAAAAAMAZING! The first Indian Food menu of it's kind in both USA and UK. This is different and better than everything I have ever tried in 25 years eating Indian food. It is really worth the trip to those in London.
C. N.
This is a restaurant and does take away. Amazing food! Fantastic staff. Went in this evening to get some take away, staff were very accommodating and engaging and also got a chance to sit down with the owners. Got home and food was outstanding, easily best take away i have had in years and will be attending it as a restaurant as soon as posible.
Just flat out impressive! Do not pass this by with out trying it.
b. d.
Amazing food and the most welcoming and considerate staff! Were vegan so really hard to find an Indian restaurant that caters. Delicious authentic food!
S. S.
Clays Hyderabadi restaurant is fantastic, outstanding with hyderabadi flavours..well maintained by very friendly staff , service is prompt. We are very blessed to find places like this in Reading area. Highly recommend to everybody! Best indian food!!!
S. H.
The best Indian food in Reading an Berkshire! Great service and exciting specials, highly recommended!
D. J.
My girlfriend and I love Clays. It has a really lovely atmosphere and the food is incredible. We have been for dinner a few times and will be back again many times! I recommend trying the lamb starter, it’s delicious!
M. B.
Second visit. Delicious and changing food selection, with a decent drink selection (including a special house beer made by West Berkshire Brewery). It's earned its acclaim in the short time its been open.
D. R.
I have eaten here twice now and both times was impressed by the variety and quality of food. It's a specific cuisine rather than generic UK Indian and much better for it. I will be back.
s. m.
I do not give reviews quite often but i thought i should give review to Clays's Hyderabadi after enjoyting nice dinner and drinks with my Family. Clay's Hyderbadi is nice,
fine dining Restaurant with Great ambience and top class customer service.I ordered multiple starters and the top picks are Gosh ke Sev( Lamb scratchings) and Gobi Fry(cauliflower fry)
and in Main course we ordered Clay's signature dish(Clay Pot Biryani) and Monk Fish Curry. I will definitely Visit again with my friends very soon.
F. F.
Really fresh, exciting, vibrant food; impressive and imaginative array of drinks; wonderful friendly staff. Will definitely return and appreciated the sense of pride and passion running through our whole meal here. Fantastic.
H. S.
Visited Clay's Hydrabadi Kitchen last Saturday again. It really is a hidden gem. The food was simply superb, authentic and very friendly service.
Lamb biryani was amazing and freshly portion cooked in clay pot and taste was out of the world.
Pattar ka gosht carries its unique flavour and was excellent and well-balanced.
Kairi Murgh was very nice tangy and soft.
Bhuna Venision, I am a big fan of venision, I ate a lot when I was young. I was missing it here in UK. Thanks Clay to adding this to your menu, it was awesome.
Both visits were excellent and fully satisfied with their service and food. This is our new go to place.
110% I can recommend Clay's to anyone.
L. G.
Faultless- ordered for a Friday night, really well packaged and most importantly, absolutely delicious. Highly recommended, will definitely be ordering again
J. B.

J. M.
Food is delicious, full of flavours. It is always a pleasure to try different dishes and so far always been extremely satisfied. We always order as a takeaway so i can't comment on the service. Little gem.
J. P.
Had a really great meal - refreshing to find a place where not only you eat something delicious but as well different and more original than your standard Indian restaurant. Highly recommend!
E. W.
Best Indian restaurant in Reading, with excellent authentically cooked biryani, very friendly staff and excellent atmosphere. This is a must-visit! We are never disappointed when we visit
D.
This review is in response to the accusations made by the previous reviewers from this evening - Jason ST, Rosina Shrestha, Manisa Stha and Mausam Shrestha. I was a diner at the restaurant this evening and witnessed your behaviour, which was a disgrace. The host was perfectly pleasant with you and simply asked that you turn down the sound on your phone as you were disturbing the other diners. Why would you come to a great restaurant and then watch football loudly on your phone?! The way you behaved was awful and it was myself and the other diners who were telling you to go away and leave everyone in peace. Shame on you! This is a fantastic restaurant everyone, please ignore the childish comments from those attention seeking individuals who behaved like idiots.
A. B.
Honestly the best Indian food I've ever had, maybe even the best food overall! Nice intimate atmosphere and amazing service, I will definitely be back with more people!
D. D.
Absolutely love the food, so different and a refreshing change from the Bangladeshi cuisine. Staff are attentive and knowledgeable about the food their serving. Well done!
S. H.
Amazing food, great tastes with lovely ingredients. Service is always with a smile, and it's great to know it's a local business with a menu crafted with love
I. J.
If you want poppadoms and chicken tikka then go elsewhere. If you want genuine, amazing food then try this. Amazed that Reading has somewhere so good, and try the mango APA, its lovely.
p. w.
Fantastic food. Lovely staff. Will be back soon.
R. A.
Try the rabbit dish. Who knew if could be so tender?! Imaginative and bursting with flavour. The Bhuna dish also goes well with the mango ale. Can't wait to go again.
M. C.
A great find in London Street, had a lovely curry before a show at South Street, quite different to our local curry house and plenty of additional seating downstairs. Staff very friendly and helpful.
P. W.
The best Indian restaurant in Reading by a long way. Menu changes periodically and dishes are distinctive and varied. Staff are lovely too
W. W.
Anyone who knows anything about good food needs to eat here, now! I cannot remember the last time I had such an exquisite meal to tingle every taste bud. Caterijg for vegana too, win win in my book. When I am back in my home town again I will be coming straight back for more.
J. D.
Amazing food, refreshing and different from your general Indian restaurant. The owner came over to see how our food was too! Cnt recommend enough!
O. C.
The buryanis are the best in the area. I love the incorporation of lemon zest and the traditional serving method. The pakooras are a bit on the salty side but overall very good taste.
M. K.
First visit. Really pleased with the food. Captured the flavours of Hyderabad very well. Great value for money, friendly service. Can’t wait to go back.
S. M.
