We stumbled upon this pub on a self-guided village tour of Berkshire, and what a gem. Real wood fire and a choice of cozy interior, bright conservatory or pretty garden tables. The two young staff (students?) were so warm and friendly, making us feel at ease immediately. But the highlight was definitely the food - the chef is to be celebrated for his/her attention to flavour and clear passion for the culinary delights. The lamb shank was superbly cooked and the gravy as good as any I've had in top restaurants, the squid rings were crispy and the roasted tomato soup was full of flavour and had a depth that is only achieved by someone who really understands how to build tasty layers. We also appreciated that they kept the kitchen open for us even though we arrived very close to 2pm. Dog friendly.

Wow, what a pub! Lovely staff, incredible menu and the food is delicious. Bao Buns are a must, the fish and chips are huge and deserts freshly made. The tent out back is pretty cool with plenty of indoor, undercover and outdoor space. Chickens roaming too!

Went for a meal at the Boot last week. Had fish and chips, my favourite here and in my opinion the best around. Also tried the croissant based bread and butter pudding. Its very light and flavoursome and while I don't normally have a sweet this was very good. As usual, friendly reception, good service and nice wine.

Had the most lovely Christmas Day lunch. The food was exquisite, with pre-lunch snacks on the table when we arrived. An old and traditional setting, but in a warm environment and a lovely atmosphere. We were conveniently sat next to the log fire. This pub will not disappoint. Highly recommended. Thank you for proving such a wonderful Christmas Day experience and being part of our memories.

New friendly owners who have made a tasteful upgrade to the interior which still maintains the special character of the pub. We visited on a Friday lunchtime with both fireplaces on offering a warm welcome. Great selection of local ales from the West Berkshire Brewery. Good food menu offering something for everyone and it would be good to see a selection of classic English pub sandwiches as an alternative to the more modern choices.

I came here about 3 months ago and couldn’t believe that they actually cooked my steak rare. It was genuinely the best steak I’ve had in the UK. I came back tonight and was in disbelief that my steak was as perfect as it was before and even better when sat by the gigantic fire. Love! I’ll be back.

Really lovely setting with good facilities for the kids and plenty of space to run around in. Decent beer selection, but didn't try anything from the menu. (update as of February 11th '22): whiskey burger, flat iron steak, and wiener schnitzel - all superb. Wine selection is ace, too! Upgraded to 5*

Lovely garden with plenty of seating which is a total suntrap (when it's shining!). I had the roast beef delicious apart from the slightly over cooked roast potatoes. Also ordered more drinks and had to remind the waiter to bring them hence the 4 🌟

Great food, lovely atmosphere and the teepee in the garden is great while we have to sit outside to eat. There's kids play equipment in the garden too which is perfect. The wait to be served etc was longer than I would have liked but I can appreciate everyone is getting used to a new way of working at the moment.

A really great family pub with a huge garden perfect for kids/ dogs/ chickens... The staff are lovely and the new owners have made a very comfortable space for eating and socialising in the large outdoor teepee. Inside the pub is cosy and the conservatory is ideal for Sunday lunch and family celebrations.Lots of good walks nearby, parking directly opposite.

Lovely place, atmosphere (the teepee is great) and food. However the service/communications when we visited was frankly, really poor - it was super busy when we got there but it wasn't until 30 mins after asking to order 3 times (even just to put in a toddler's order to start with so she could have some food) that we were told orders would be delayed and couldn't be taken for another 15 mins. When it came food was good but again basic things were missing like checking on the table, 10 mins to get the bill etc. Sorting these small things would make this place amazing. We may have just caught them on an off day

We had a Christmas evening meal here (quite a few of us), the food and atmosphere was lovely. Top marks for the amazing Marquee, nice and warm even on a cold December night. The landlord and members of staff worked hard, and were all friendly. They deserve all their success. Thanks for a great evening

Nice village pub. Good precautions for Covid. We had a great lunch in the interesting tented function area at the rear of the pub. Good beer and food. The menu is a step up from the average pub fare and was well prepared and nicely cooked. And the staff were great. All good. Would look forward to coming back again.

Mixed feelings ... Staff friendly and helpful, but stretched. Food ok, but sauces added to food in kitchen, rather than giving you a choice of how much, e.g. dressing on a salad. Location very nice. Beer very good. Teepees in the garden are fine, except in the hot weather ... Could do with some fans to move the air.

Lovely old pub with an extended dining room at the back. Great atmosphere with open fire. Wide choice of food all very nicely prepared apart from medium rare steak was overdone (I know it's difficult to judge when cooking) and there could have been an additional ale on but overall a very enjoyable evening.

Lovely pub and restaurant. Huge garden with plenty of tables and nice view. The service was good, staff polite and friendly. Food was really good, big portions and very tasty. Only thing is that the menu for lunch is quite small and so not a huge amount of choice.

I organised a birthday meal for my boyfriend via phone and email. Rebecca listened to all my requests and put everything together. The food was stunning. Cooked and presented to perfection. Even a beautiful apple swan and candles on the cheeseboard. A bottle of chilled champagne was ready when we arrived and the ladies who looked after us were brilliant. Really friendly and efficient. I love that the pub is dog friendly and has a beautiful garden. The fires in the cosy bar make it feel like a proper pub but the food is like an upscale restaurant. Thank you for a really lovely night. We can't wait to come back!

A favourite of the locals. Honest tasty food at sensible prices alongside a well stocked bar. Runs special events to celebrate things such as Christmas and New Year. Friendly staff are attentive. Book ahead at peak times to ensure a table.

Turned away from the Bull Inn at 1pm on Good Friday as they weren't serving any more food so walked down the road to this place. Nice fire going inside but as it was sunny we sat in the huge garden. After a short wait our meals arrived - substantial and beautifully presented. The fish was fresh and my partner said it was the best fish & chips he's had for years. I had the beef pie which was equally delicious - packed with meat, a lovely thick gravy and really good pastry. Friendly staff and welcoming of dogs. If we're in the area again we'll definitely come back to the Old Boot Inn!
