This should be a 5 star review because the food was good, the servers were friendly and helpful, and the ambience was pleasant. However the kitchen was over whelmed so our food was very late. We arrived at 5.20pm after the theatre for dinner. Our starters came out at 6.30 and we were very happy with the standard of food. Our server informed us that the chefs were backed up and it might be a slight wait. However we didn't get our main meal until 8pm. By this time we were the last people eating when all around us the tables had been packed away and the night club was already playing loud music. We couldn't hear ourselves talk so we had to leave and have dessert and coffee elsewhere. Our server, Claire, was very good and did everything she could to make it right for us so that we would be happy to return. I think we will give it another try. Prices were reasonable for quality and portion sizes. Well recommended.

Papillon is situated in one of the iconic buildings in Southampton. The interior is well preserved and decorated really well. I found the tables quite small though, not much space to move around with food and drinks. But the customer service was brilliant, and the food was amazing. We had the vegan burger, triple cooked chips and warm pistachio cake. Each one of them were perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. Specially loved the pistachio cake that was served with cream cheese frosting. The combination was epic and the cake melted in the mouth. We had a great experience dining there and highly recommend this place.

I would rate 6 if I could! We went in today for a Sunday roast and it was one of the best I have ever had. Everything was on point, with the added joy of a beef brisket croquette for the roast beef and a lovely cauliflower cheese dish as a side. The pork and beef roasts were tender and cooked to perfection. We also tried the biscoff espresso martini and the bread and butter pudding. Wonderful ambience, and we particularly enjoyed the music. The service was very good, and the food arrived faster than we expected.

A Sunday roast to die for!!! Perfection across the board for a roast at Papillon. The potatoes were crispy on the outside and beautifully fluffy on the inside, the portions were fantastic. Popped in for a few after theatre drinks and honestly these cocktails were super tasty and incredibly well presented. The Bee's Knee's was my favourite, honeycomby deliciousness. Staff super friendly too, really knowledgeable about the drinks and friendly to chat with. Prices super reasonable too! I'll definitely have to come back to check the food options which I'm sure are just as incredible. 5 stars!

We went for a Friday night meal. The lamb rump and crab linguine were both delicious and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. The cocktail menu looked fab, and my friend enjoyed the ones she tried. As I was driving it would have been nice to have a few mocktail options, or even just a soft drinks menu.

Went here with husband for my 30th. Cocktails were super tasty, staff was really friendly and food was amazing (I recommend the seared tuna starter, the miso mayonnaise it came with is out of this world tasty). Would definitely come here again and thoroughly recommend it.

Kept true to the original building which is fab, can't wait to eat here. However music is awful! Needs to be toned down and changed to something a bit more inkeeping or chilled house/ibiza. Pints weren't filled to the top and for £9 the cocktails should be to the top of the glass (it was tasty though!). Staff are finding their way, GM and BM a credit.

We had the nicest lunch here earlier today. The food was absolutely delicious (the pea fritters that came with the fish were immense!) and the service was impeccable. All of the staff were lovely and Rosella in particular was brilliant - thank you for being so patient whilst we were trying to make up our minds about ice cream flavours!! This is a great restaurant, the staff are clearly well practiced in dealing with the busy periods before shows at the theatre opposite so I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for lunch before the matinee. The other great thing is that you can book a table online!

I had a wonderful time at Papillon with my girlfriends! We are third years and are always looking for new places to go for drinks and I think we have found our new favourite! The bartender Amy was super friendly and chatty (we might invite her out with us next time) and made our visit really special. The drinks selection and interior was also lovely! Highly recommend

Our first visit to the venue made an impression.* Very friendly staff. Nice busy atmosphere. However Chicken meal I chose was disappointing, very bland/ lukewarm sauce,just about edible. Waitresses Amy and Claire showed genuine concern at my comment, and would advise the chef.* Long story short, as they were so caring, decided to return next evening. Due to my difficulty to chose from the menu, it was arranged chef would do a pasta dish, which was absolutely delicious, and very much appreciated. ** Both of my husband's meals were enjoyable, but the pudding /brownie - just OK - very dry. Needed at least addition of cream. Only four star given as we feel the venue still has a few issues to address. Not least cleaning the dusty rail running along the wall, at eye level, adjacent to the table on second floor. Not good!

We came here for my bosses birthday a couple months ago and the service and cocktails were amazing- a very knowledgeable and skilled bartender was serving us. I then revisited this Sunday for my birthday dinner as I had heard the roasts were to die for. We were not disappointed! We were on a work trip from Canada with a group of 6 when we spotted this incredible restaurant/ bar that had been converted from a church. The food was by far the best meal we had in the UK, the custom cocktails we had were delicious and unique, the ambience and architecture were incredible, and the bar supervisor (Aiden) went above and beyond to help us find a few hidden gems that helped make our trip amazing. Highly recommend as a must visit!

Came in for a Sunday roast with my partner, the Roast beef was absolutely superb. Atmosphere was really lovely, it was the first time I've been to the building since it became Papillon and it looks brilliant. I really recommend the biscoff espresso martini it was properly good. The service was outstanding and really accommodating, especially our waitress Amy who could not have done more to help - along with all of the rest of the staff. Overall really high quality experience and I'll definitely be coming again!

we really enjoyed the food and general ambiance, staff were friendly and helpful. however, as first time visitors, we were unaware that the seating around the outside of the room was on high tables with bar stool height chairs which wasn't the easiest or most comfortable with a dodgy hip - on asking for a different table we were advised that we should have requested the central area of the restaurant on the booking form online ( they couldn't move us as all such tables had already been booked this way for 5.30 pm last night ) I'd also suggest requesting that you are not seated immediately beside the end of the bar as it was freezing! ( the heat from a central space heater simply past it by but the main eating area was very cosy ) we will certainly eat here again but will be better prepared next time:)

Lovely venue in a disused church. Came with my mum and sister for drinks before heading to the theatre. Parking on site which was very handy. What an incredible experience! The waitress Rosina was fabulous, she was so attentive! I ordered the beer battered cod at it was incredible! If you get a chance, try the Biscoff Martini made by Andreas, it is to die for! I would recommend this restaurant completely.

Went to papillon for drinks and was really taken aback with the wonderful interior, lovely staff and tasty cocktails. Amy, our bartender, was happy to recommend some drinks and they all went down a treat. Will definitely come to try their food next time!

Have been to this establishment twice nice, both times was perfect. Cocktails and food are amazing, not a single fault. Would highly recommend anyone visiting Southampton or living nearby to check it out at least once, you won't regret it.

Came in for a roast dinner today, definitely one of the best roasts I've ever had. Generous portions. Helpful staff. Lots of drink choices as well, the cocktails especially were very good.

Fantastic building inside and out. Felt at ease as soon as we stepped inside as staff greated us in a very friendly welcoming way. Great service throughout our stay. Menu had changed which was a little disappointing but what was on the menu was good. Menu prices could be a little bit lower though. Don't let that put you off for a good evening. Me and my mates came in last week, and we were left amazed by their cocktails. If you’re lucky you might even be able to get a off menu drink. The costumer service it’s nothing to laugh at either, our bartender James made sure of that, by being friendly, helpful, and made one of the best drinks I ever had, chocolate and banana rum old fashion. First time we have eaten here, and we weren't disappointed. Upmarket restaurant with really lovely food, good size portions and great service. The conversion from Church to restaurant has been done beautifully maintaining all the elegance of the building. We were going on to the Mayflower Theatre matinée and were pleasantly surprised to find that that there was a special pre-theatre charge for 2 and 3 course meals. Will definitely visit again. Be aware that there are quite a few steps up to the upstairs restaurant area.

Looking forward to a pleasant evening of food and drinks, we were disappointed to find Papillion in a state of disarray preparing to host a late night rave with staff more concerned with premixing vodka and redbulls than attending to their paying customers. After chasing someone down to show us to our reserved table, we were finally brought to a cramped area upstairs set amongst an eyesore of stacked tables and chairs where we were made to wait 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive whilst listening to thumping drum and bass music, all of which was at total odds with the calm and ambient setting of the converted church. Fortunately, the food itself was delicious and delivered promptly by our warm and friendly waiter, hence the higher rating. Overall, however, a disappointing experience in a venue that seems unsure of the demographic it is trying to cater to.

Just visited Papillon for an evening meal. Last time I was here was over a decade ago. The place has been completely transformed and it looks great. Great evening at papillon. really close to the station and city centre which is ideal. I had a lovely beef burger and my friend really enjoyed their beetroot risotto. After the theatre we returned, got 20% off our post theatre drinks which were wonderfully made by Amy. Will be back :)

Had a pre theatre meal here before popping over the road to the Mayflower. We arrived a little before our booking time but the table was ready and waiting exactly where we asked to sit. The waiting staff were friendly and helpful. We both had a burger and fries as the pre theatre dinner menu isn’t as extensive as the a la carte but there was enough on there for most customers. Over all it was a better experience than we’ve had before when it was the Vestry and the prices weren’t much different from the Mayflower Village pub across the road. We’ll definitely use again.

First the restaurant closes too early. We were a party of 6 booked in for 8pm. On arrival ( naturally some came a bit late) we were informed that they close at 9pm. The food was very average. 2 guests ordered Hake in a sauce that was full of bones. Unacceptable as the thick sauce made it hard to find the offending bones. Some ordered desert which was missing some of the embellishments because they had run out. Certainly not a place I would recommend.

Papillon is my new go to spot when I come down to Southampton. Came from london not to long ago on a day trip and found this little gem. The staff were lovely too, my waitress (Rosina) was brilliant, her customer service was 10/10 she recommended vegan and vegetarian items because of my dietary requirements and was very helpful and patient because I'm very indecisive. Would recommend highly and can't wait for my next visit.

I went into papillon on a date with my boyfriend, i’m not usually wowed by the bars and restaurants in southampton but this one pleasantly surprised me. Not only is the cocktail selection superb!! they are delicious. normally i shy away from ordering a mai tai in the UK as it doesn’t usually compare. however, papillon really understood the assignment. i must also say the bartender (amy, is her name i believe) who made our drinks was lovely and very impressed with her mixology skills

Lovely food and surroundings. Friendly staff too. Service very slow as not enough staff to cope with a busy Saturday evening. We actually had to leave just as our desserts arrived as we'd waited over 30 mins after we ordered. I stated when booking that we had to leave by 19.15 for the theatre.. Looking around us, at least two other tables were frustrated by slow service. A real shame, they need to address the staff levels.
