Had a lovely dinner here on father's Day, the service was great from start to finish and so was the food everything was fresh and looked and tasted amazing. The 8oz ribeye steak was very nice unfortunately my steak was cold but was quickly changed with no hassle and was nice and hot the next time. Will definitely recommend to family and friends and will be back again soon.

Lovely evening meal in the garden area. Limited menu but that's not always a bad thing. Husband had fish of the day and I had vegetarian option, both were lovely. Our waitress was very nice but couldn't open the wine even though it was a screw top 😂 Quite expensive but nice for a treat.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday roast today!! me and my friends had the chicken, beef and lamb all of which were incredible, not to mention the ginormous Yorkshire pudding and crispy roast potatoes. Would 10/10 recommend if your looking for a lovely independent local restaurant to support 😊

Wow! The garden area is the most amazing place to eat - spectacular. There's only a small selection on the menu, but it's all fantastic - the steak was sublime. Slight negative with young staff still learning their trade, but not enough to lose a star. Great place for a romantic meal or treat for a special occasion.

I booked in with the River Rat for my gender reveal meal with 10 of my family members for food and drinks. They accommodated all of us (especially my dad who is very fussy when it comes to his food), the menu had a great selection of veg meals and meat dishes and my god they delivered. The peppercorn sauce was the best I've ever had and the mushroom starter smelt and tasted incredible. The drinks menu had everything and anything and because I am pregnant they even made me mocktails all evening which tasted delicious. Staff was incredibly professional and accommodating. Shout out to all the kitchen staff for the beautiful food and Dan and Elliot our servers. Very clean and beautiful establishment and would recommend to anyone looking for a hearty, tasty meal. Thank you for making our day extra special.

Wow!!! Last night was my parents 50th wedding anniversary and we had 20 for a seated meal - we had a private room (with en suite) which had its own private entrance. The food was delicious and the best part was the service, it was seamless and everyone had their food at the same time and plates were cleared promptly - if you are looking for a venue to host a dinner party for up to 20 people, River Rat is perfect. Great atmosphere and lovely garden to dine in. Friendly and polite staff. All the food was tasty and enjoyed, but the menu feels a little incoherent and prices for some meals a little steep for what you get.

I couldn't wait to try this restaurant which is 5 weeks into new management. It was a beautiful sunny evening in Hamble so headed to the garden to eat. WOW what a lovely surprise, it was beautiful, several different eating areas with twinkly lights and great planting. So on to the food. I had stuffed courgette, pine nuts, goats cheese, with roasted new potatoes and green leaf salad with passatta, my friend had sea bream fish cakes and we both cleared our plates. Rhubard crumb and brownies to follow which was really good. The hosts were really friendly and service was really good. I will definitely be back in this restaurant/bar in the next week or two.

The food was ok, not outstanding, but no complaints. However, booked a table week in advance, and when we arrived we were given a different table right underneath a full-on heater so hot it was grilling my dinner, so was given another table , very high with bar stalls, finally given another table which was nice, But, I don't see the point of reserving a table, and when you get there its given to someone else .

We participated in the River Rat's Friday night delivery and were delighted to have their Moroccan Tangine Djaj Bil Mishmash. It was beautifully made, deeply flavoursome, with generous chunks of chicken and veg. The cous cous was delicious and fluffy. Delivery was fast, friendly, and the food was piping hot. Nice one guys - looking forward to our next meal!

We had our wedding reception at the River Rat for 63 people and they did the most fantastic job. Sarah and Laura were so helpful before in helping us to organise everything. They accommodated all of our requests on food, band, layout, drinks, timings and everything else. The food was excellent and the staff were always on hand. We and all of our guests had a brilliant day and there were a lot of compliments from everyone on how well the River Rat had done. So thanks again!

The River Rat is a lovely restaurant in Hamble le Rice with an interesting garden for dining. It already has good reviews which were well deserved. Good menu with vegetarian options. Staff were particularly good, friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

Went here for Sunday lunch for Mum’s birthday and we booked one of their huts in the garden. Gorgeous setting and they decorated it for a birthday which was a thoughtful touch. Bloody Mary was good, followed by a delicious medium-rare Sunday Roast beef. Yorkshire pudding the highlight! Service good. Wine very tasty :)

A really great place to eat! Friendly and welcoming - from owners to waiting staff - it is just lovely. Did I mention the food? Wow! The changing menus have an array of dishes - so something to suit all - even a children's menu! Thank you River Rat (again!)

Had the pleasure of quiz night last night and it was excellent . Fantastic Camembert between the two halves of the quiz and a great atmosphere. As usual the service and food were excellent. There is a good wine list and selection of drinks including cocktails. The venue is lovely having recently expanded into the next door property and is very clean and tidy. The outside space is great too where they maximise the limited space to create some very private tables. We had a fixed menu last night due to the quiz, but we have never had a bad meal here. The specials board always provides a curve ball to make your choice of meals a little more of a test, and choosing a sweet is sometimes a conundrum but we have yet to be disappointed. The only downside to The Rat it’s that it’s over an hour’s drive to get there, but we will continue to do it, especially if we can tie in a walk around the area, lots to see there too.

Wonderful Sunday lunch, one of the best around (although a bit more meat wouldn't go amiss!). Great veggie nutroast too. Great to eat here and then walk around the lovely hamble. The only improvement would be to have more of the classics on the dessert menu. But all in all we cannot recommend enough!

Lovely outdoor seating area in the back. Separate gazebos and plenty of room for our table of 8 and equipped with a heater, although not needed on a hot Sunday afternoon. Didn't fancy a roast dinner until I saw someone else getting their food! Decision made! Would definitely return and recommend.

Went on a Sunday, had booked to sit in garden which did kind of, very little shade on hot day. Found the menu to be very limited with few options for vegetarians. Suggest you check menu on line before going. Service was average, young staff not very motivated or organised. It’s an ok place but more for local customers really. Probably try one of the pubs next time.

Surprise Valentines meal was collected at 6:30 and brought home. It was delicious 😋 Sticky pork belly starter, beef wellington main with veg and pots and chocolate brownies with cream and dipped strawberry after. Such a lovely treat in this lockdown situation we find ourselves and the food was delicious. The beef in the wellingtons was so tender and so easy to prepare.

Sarah, Laura and the Team hosted our wedding reception on Wed 16th December 2020. Despite the ever changing COVID restrictions they made the whole thing super simple and enjoyable. Décor was great, service was superb and food was fantastic (Fillet steak main was perfectly cooked!). The whole evening was perfect from start to finish. Delicious home made food, first time I’ve ever eaten here and this sort of takeaway would be great to be available other than during lockdowns only as it gets boring all the usual take always available, especially in Hamble where it’s limited as it is. Deffo going to try their Sunday roast now 😊

I never normally bother to write reviews but I have enjoyed this retaurant on many occasions and it has never disappointed. The staff are friendly without being intrusive and the food is excellent, on a par with some far more expensive places I've been to. Its not the cheapest place in Hamble but if you want a really top quality meal it's the place to go.
