Excellent service. Lovely food and good value - had choices all from the set vegan menu and really appreciated the effort gone to keep these in line with the other menu. Also had a lovely mocktail and impressed with all the vegan desserts choices, will be coming back to try more!

I'm rating this as 3 stars when the reality is that we had a 2 star experience but the staff were truly up against it with other members apparently not turning up for work on the day we visited and the drinks delivery not coming so there was basically nothing to drink. Ordinarily I think this would be a 4/5 experience but it wasn't for us. We booked well in advance as a party of 10+ and on arrival were surprised that the restaurant was near empty, at lunchtime, on a Sunday, in a prime spot, when York was heaving. No problem though, hopefully this would lead to fast service... it didn't. The poor waiting staff seemed like they were ready to just walk out, a simple request for water for the table to the young chap was met with a look that suggested I'd asked him to drain his body of all its blood and serve us that. The water never came despite three requests. Food service was incredibly slow to the point the kids were asking when it would be coming nearly an hour after ordering but when theirs arrived it was really impressive, it just took too long between starters and mains. On the adult side starters were excellent and presented really well but the Sunday lunch was a bit lacking, the meat was decent, the gravy good but the roast potatoes hard and dry, the carrots unappealing to look at but tasty and the plate just lacked "green" to balance things a bit. Other dishes on the table that weren't the Sunday lunch looked really good but were a little cold by all accounts. They ran out of beer, soft drinks, soda water and more yet we somehow still managed to have a table full of glassware to the point we moved it ourselves to make some room. It was a similar story with plates. Ordinarily I wouldnt have been happy and complained but the prices charged werent excessive and the starter made up for the disappointing main. We'd have ordered deserts but had been there so long that we just wanted to get out by that point. I suspect this experience isn't a reflection of how things normally are there and the many favourable reviews seem to confirm this but it was disappointing for us all the same. I hope they get their staffing issues sorted and manage to get to the point where the day is stress free enough to be able to give diners water when they can't serve any other drinks. This is the first time I've ever felt the need to ask the front of house staff if they're OK at a restaurant, I felt really sorry for them and we tipped accordingly when normally we'd have been asking for money off the bill.

My friend and I are visiting from the U.S. and this was by far the best food we’ve had for the best price thus far on our trip. I am vegan and my friend is not and we both absolutely loved the food. The service was amazing and the ambiance very relaxed. Dora, our server, was incredibly sweet and helpful. I was blown away by the excellent service, the delicious cuisine, and the unbeatable price.

We stayed in York recently and wanted to take my parents and our 8 year oldout for a really nice meal. I found this restaurant through it's high Google reviews... and now I see why! I couldn’t fault the restaurant at all! Staff were friendly, food was delicious and had a beautiful atmosphere! We booked for 5pm so we didn't risk being too disruptive with a child. The choice was excellent and as we were there on a Sunday we chose the set menu. 3 courses for £25! It was incredible value for money and the quality of food was outstanding! The starters were a great size and the roast dinners were so delicious! Portions were so good that my parents couldn't fit in desert... but we could and the Brownie was heavenly! The restaurant were fantastic with our child, and have a specific menu for children. Her meal was homemade and great quality and she loved her ice cream with chocolate sauce! We will absolutely be back as it was a great find and some of the nicest classic food I have had in a while!

It was okay. We were the only ones in the restaurant from 5:30 - 6:30 on a Friday night. Two of our steaks were over cooked, but the chips were good. Somehow they forgot to make my daughter’s order, but we were not charged for it, and she received a complimentary drink. It has been over 10 years since we last visited this restaurant. So we thought we’d make another visit! It is a spacious restaurant with high ceilings and tables were sensibly placed with the 2 dining areas. We were greeted with a friendly waitress who took us to our table. She informed us of the soup of the day. We perused the menu which has a good choice. We opted for the set menu, one of which was a vegan version. It wasn’t because we were vegan, but the menu was enticing! We ordered our drinks and had some fresh bread as an accompaniment. The waitress later came back to take our food choices. It had a lovely atmosphere with music in the background. It didn’t take long for our starters to arrive. The food was fresh and well presented. The mains came hot and steaming which was delicious!! We also managed to fit in dessert too! It was a lovely evening! Great menu and friendly staff. We will definitely return again and not leave it another 10 years!!

Visit on 18th July 2022. A very day no air conditioning,this did not spoil the experience. The young waiter was brilliant seated us next to the window and made sure we was comfortable with the heat. Food was excellent the 21 year old chef cooked everything perfectly and clearly loves cooking. We will definitely be back best meal we had in york. We ate a Full English breakfast here this morning and could not fault the lovely service, food, coffee, clean restaurant and extremely friendly and welcoming proprietor. I know visitors are spoiled for choice in York but would recommend this lovely restaurant. Lovely helpful servers but disappointed with the food from the vegan menu. We ordered the arancini, the Mediterranean vegetable stack and the vegan paella. None of which arrived as described on the menu with items replaced without being told. The feta on the paella and veg stack was replaced with lots of vegan smoked cheese which was not very pleasant and didn't compliment the dishes. Also the arancini and paella did not arrive with any rocket, the arancini had some basic salad instead. It was not really the nice flavours we were expecting from the experience.

Hubbie and I took advantage of the excellent Eat Out scheme and thought we’d try 31 Castlegate for the first time. We were not disappointed. The food is wonderful. Being both vegan, we tried all 3 courses from the Vegan Set Lunch menu (they are an omnivorous restaurant). Since there were two vegan choices for each course, we ordered both and shared half each. That way, we were able to sample the entire vegan set menu. The food is delicious, well presented & plentiful. For starters, the vegan fishcakes came with a very tasty vegan tartar sauce to add an interesting zing. The crispy warm seitan had a lovely crunchy texture. For mains, the felafel burger was perfectly cooked & very substantial with proper delicious hand cut chips. The seitan stroganoff is to die for – this was our favourite. This time the seitan texture was softer and melted in your mouth, with a tasty creamy tomato and mushroom sauce served with rice and green beans. For dessert, we had the lemon curd mousse filled in a vanilla tuile with raspberry sorbet which was lovely, light & refreshing after the previous two courses. The highlight though has to be the amazing chocolate brownie with the best vegan coconut icecream I’ve ever had. It was quite substantial so we were completely stuffed to the brim and didn’t need to eat anything else for the rest of the day! The staff are very friendly and accommodating and it made a lovely change not to be rushed through our courses since we were there for nearly 2 hours. Both hubbie and I are very impressed and would highly recommend 31 Castlegate. We will definitely be returning as we can’t wait to try the other vegan dishes.

Eaten at 31 twice now and can say that the food is great and reasonably priced. The fixed price menu includes something for all tastes and the alacarte builds on this. Wine list has all that you may want. This is a place that I will return to.

The 8oz beef ribeye was good, although I normally prefer my steaks to be a bit more charred on the surface and medium rare on the inside. In any case the meat was juicy and the pepper sauce was one of the best that I have tried. The onion rings that came with the meal was simply awesome. The chips was fried fresh unlike some other restaurants who refries their chips. Freshly fried chips is really heavenly tasting. Mushrooms was sweet and succulent and a slice of grilled tomatoes completed the meal. 31C also serves all day English breakfast and although I did not order that, it looked good when the wait staff served it to other diners.

My husband and I sampled the excellent cuisine today for the very first time . As soon as we walked in the restaurant there was an air of friendliness shown to us by the staff. The enticing menu was inviting. I chose the fresh halibut with a delicious saffron sauce and accompanied with ratatouille, endive and fennel salad. My husbands choice was a duo of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes. Each dish was beautifully presented and the flavours were out of this world. Afterwards, I was the only one who agreed to try the delicious Tiramisu dessert. I can honestly say that was by far the best Tiramisu I have ever tasted. It even came with a shot of Baileys. This restaurant deserves full marks and highly recommended.

Really lovely food, but slow service. Went here for the first time last night, and the service was the slowest I've had in York - it was often difficult to get a staff member's attention, and it took over an hour from ordering for our main course to reach us (we arrived for 17:45, and ordering promptly and not hanging around, left around 22:00). Several other visitors seemed to be frustrated by this, some leaving early and some making light of it. It should be said that the food was ace (I had the mussels and sea bass), and the staff there were very nice, but there just weren't enough of them. Based on our experience, would only recommend if you wanted the meal to be a whole night rather than just a part of a bigger night.

On a recent trip to York we had dinner at this restaurant primarily because they offered a vegan set menu.. We had a table booked for 7 o’clock and the restaurant was already busy with a friendly chatter a pleasant backdrop. We order the vegan set menu and the quality of the food was excellent. They do some really great stuff with seitan and the falafel burger was really great and wholesome. They have a good wine list and all of it i would say is reasonably priced. The service was impeccable and we had a really lovely relaxed evening there.

This is a superb restaurant, simple and elegant. Service as just right, attentive without being 'in your face' and staff responsive to requests. We had the à la carte on the evening, 2 courses, a bit more expensive. Portions were amazing. the belly pork cooked to perfection with a sdivine Asian style salad to complement. My main courses halibut on ratatouille was stunning, my partner had duck 3 ways. We finished off with cheeses, again the selection and portions were ++ generous. Don’t understand why it wasn't packed out. Maybe because it was a bit more pricy than the competition on the same street...

Used to come here as a student at York 12 years ago. amazing memories and the food is still great, unfortunately the service leaves a lot to be desired. It took 2 hours for our meal. we were left 20m without even a drinks order. tried to make eye contact with staff and totally ignored multiple times. each course took too long. had to ask for bill with desert to reduce time, but still left waiting for ages.

We liked it here. Food wholesome, very tasty and of a very high standard. It's not a pub as the name and signage might suggest so if it's just a drink your after, York is awash with some amazing watering holes including some entertaining music and dance venues!

Fantastic dining experience from start to finish. It wasn't a particularly busy time when we had booked for, but our waiter was superb, offering to move us to a nicer table than where we had initially sat down, he suggested the perfect wine to accompany our meal choice and was very caring and attentive throughout. The food, which is apparently selected and prepared by the owner was beautiful, we had 2 fillet steaks and I don't think I have ever had one better (a lovely piece of meat cooked perfectly to my preferred request). My partner was eating things on her plate that she wouldn't normally touch because they were prepared so well. The value for what we experienced in service and food and drink was spot on! Will definitely visit again and try some of the more adventurous items on the menu now that we know we can rely on the quality of the produce!

Had a wonderful dinner there yesterday for my birthday after seeing Hamlet at the pop up theatre next to Castle Museum. We had a gorgeous steak dinner prepared expertly by Nick, a beautiful bottle of French Malbec recommended by Roy who served us. It was a lovely evening. We experienced the set menu between 12pm and 3pm on Saturday 17th August 2013.The service provided and the presentation was first class in every way. We were greeted and seated very quickly at our table. We took an evening menu at 29.95 pounds per person (starter and dessert) and 7.90 pounds per cocktail. The prices are correct, the dishes are good and generous. On the other hand, the service is really very long. Our drink order was taken fairly quickly. We were served this one about a good 20 minutes later and then our food order was taken another good 15 minutes thereafter. Our entree was served over an hour after we arrived in the restaurant. The dishes are good but the wait spoils the quality of the restaurant, it's a shame. If you go there know that depending on the number of customers you may have to have a long wait... (Original) Nous avons mangé au 31 Castlegate restaurant lors de notre passage à York. Nous avions réservé sans difficulté sur leur site internet pour une table pour deux le soir même.
