What a wonderful meal!!! The place has A LOT of steep rickety stairs so if you have anyone with mobility problems you had better ask for a downstairs table!
I delightful old building with plenty of character. We went for the £20 restaurant week meal. It was delicious. Beautifully presented & lovely flavours. But the staff are a big plus point. They were all so lovely & friendly & helpful. They made it from a delicious meal into a lovely whole experience. Thankyou so much for making us feel so welcome X ♥️

Overall very good. Got cheap train tickets on what turned out to be the coldest day of the year. There were only the two of us in the restaurant, charming waitress from Brompton took our order. The cheese scuffle was great as were the mains, the meats obviously sousvide, melted in your mouth. We had a half litre of wine. Being so cold outside and the train not leaving until after six, we went down stairs into the games room and ordered another half of wine. We played "Bar billiards", I haven't played it since the 70's but soon got into the rhythm and clocked up a 1200 point break. We enjoyed our late afternoon here, would recommend it

We found the Chopping Block after searching review websites for best Sunday lunches in York and we weren't disappointed! It's a lovely old pub, fairly central but slightly off the beaten track. We had amazing food - the roast beef was the most tender I've ever had, with a massive Yorkshire Pudding and wonderful roasted vegetables. There are also other tasty options all of which were pronounced to be excellent.
We were also very well looked after by the team at the pub who were very helpful and friendly. The interior is really interesting with plenty of history and details about the former occupants, Ellerker's the renowned rope makers. The pub is owned by the family who own the local fine dining restaurant, Melton's.
I highly recommend a visit!

Great food, especially the bar snacks in the pub downstairs. The Sunday lunch is fantastic. A solid menu is offered with various themed weeks throughout the year. Not many veggie or vegans options. Great local brewery selection on tap. The staff are always friendly and chatty.

Extremely friendly staff (especially Luke), good choice of real ales and fantastic Sunday lunch. Partner said best starter he has ever had and already looking forward to returning on Wednesday to sample more of their great menu.

SO good. Had starter, main and dessert, - would’ve wanted more if it wasn’t all so perfectly filling.

Went for Sunday lunch and there is no bigger compliment than all six of us had clean plates at the end. The roast beef was absolutely delicious, probably the best roast i have ever had! (Just don’t tell my mrs!)
