Go here like right now! It was suggested by a friend and oh my god the food was spectacular! We need to go back. If you are looking from some great South African food, then this is the place to go. The staff were so friendly. Would very much recommend!

My favourite resteraunt of the week we spent in York! The hosts were unbelievably welcoming and friendly. The food (South African cuisine) was incredible! I tried the oxtail, my patrner and my daughter both had the belly pork see picture) another daughter tried the short rib. All the meals were beautiful. To top it off, the price was also very very reasonable! I cannot recommend this resteraunt highly enough. I want to return to York just to return to Karoo. Best of luck to the owners for the future! Everyone should try the food here !

Karoo is great, but the owners are better. Very freidnly as soon as you walk in you are greeted by the very friendly guys. Very nice place to go for a good eat of South African food. Very nice and chilled vibe to the place with lovely decor. The food was a 4/5. The brie wedges I could do without. I wouldn't get them again, but the loaded fries were great! Not too heavy but very tasty! 100% recommend as your starter. They were also acomodating to making a cocktail that wasn't even on the menu. Honestly super nice people and a lovely place. So it got a 5/5 because the level of personal service you get from here is great. Always better to go to a smaller owned place rather than a chain. Will return on my next visit to York. Also apparently the menu is growing very soon! So keep an eye out!

Fantastic experience! A very welcoming, relaxed and casual atmosphere with staff that fully engage with their customers. Authentic food prepared the correct way. Cannot fault the oxtail, melktert and even the biltong starter as all of these were superb. Portions are relatively large and you are definitely getting value for your money. I was even lucky enough to find some zamalek!! Will be back without a doubt to try out the rest of the menu!

We had worked up a thirst walking the wall and came across this cosy Karoo Bar & Kitchen. It was just after 8pm but instead of turning us away, Nathan and his team welcomed us in. We got to drink Five Roses, Kaluha Coffee, both South African taste experiences. Lovely vibe, clean, affordable and definitely worth popping in. Next time we’ll come earlier, the food on the menu looks yummy!!

Fabulous place with amazing staff. Nathan and Zak were the perfect hosts and their knowledge on their business was next to none. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection, ribs just fell of the bone and zero fat. Congratulations to the chef on that one. Brilliant relaxed atmosphere and made to feel so welcome. We arrived for a late lunch and from the time we walked into the restaurant it exceeded my expectations. Welcomed and being seated was so friendly. The owner checked on how we were very regularly.¹ The boboti, oxtail, pap, melktert and dom Pedro's were really so very tasty. The conversation with the owners was very great as well. Will we be back? Hell yes just try keep us away. Your food, service conversation and everything else doesn't justify the 5 points. It's more like 5 million points. Then after our visit to the Jorvik Viking Museum we popped in for a short drink and to rest my poor knee again. Had a fabulous chat with Zac and Nathan. Gave some ideas of South African dishes. Nathan and Zac are wonderful hosts running a fabulous restaurant and we will be back. Thank you so much guys. Wish you lots of busy days and busy nights. Whilst strolling down George Hudson Road, in what comes across as York’s own China Town, I was struck by the contrasting distinct African-themed vibrant décor of the Karoo Bar & Kitchen. The China Town setting starts to make more sense when one enters the restaurant and Nathan booms in his warm South African accent, “Lekker my China!”. Apart from the décor and Nathan’s gregarious manner, I can attest that the meal certainly fits the setting. We had beef short ribs as a main and the meat was tender and succulent. The earthy taste of the side of vegetables transports one’s imagination to that soil that makes the African continent such a sought-after destination. Thank you to Nathan and the team for making my birthday meal so memorable.

Recently visited York for a short Holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the trip was made all the better when we stumbled across this lovely little restaurant run by 2 lovely guys Zak & Nathan who couldn't have been more welcoming or accommodating. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Highly Reccomend if you are looking for something a little different to tantalise your tastebuds with these authentic flavours of South Africa xx hopefully we'll be able to visit again sometime x

Found this restaurant by chance whilst looking for the recommended Chinese restaurant across the road. Having previously worked in Capetown and regularly visited an old school friend in Howick, I was used to South African food. First item that caught my eye on the menu was Poitjie which is an oxtail dish. Unfortunately they had experienced delivery of oxtail following the Queen’s Jubilee. I settled for baby back ribs which were delicious. The bbq sauce for this includes treacle which gives them a lovely unique sweeter taste. On speaking to the owner I was surprised to find out that he had previously stayed in my present home town in Scotland before emigrating to South Africa. All in all a wonderful experience in a superb restaurant run by two great guys.

A real hidden gem gaining popularity in the city. Now becoming popular for it's hearty South African menu. A visitor is always warmly welcomed by hosts Nathan & Zach and you can expect service beyond expectation with food from a menu that caters for all your dietary needs served with a smile whether it be a weekday night or a busy Saturday evening. Well done your ranking speaks volumes about your presence and I will be back whether dining in or taking advantage of home delivery you have hit it on the head boys and deserve the growing recognition for all the hard work. Delicious food and a warm, pleasant and open atmosphere. Salad was fresh, chips were crispy and well-seasoned, chicken was tender and beautifully cooked, sticky-toffee pudding was homemade and a generous portion. Owner was extremely friendly and service was excellent. Good coffee too- will definitely be back.

This is great South African restaurant serving some of the delightful dishes you’d regularly find in SA. With any restaurant, it’s all about the food. My wife & I both had tempura prawns as starters, which were cooked to perfection and delicious. Well done chef. Mains were chicken schwarma and baby back ribs, both dishes tasting great and in decent sized portions - 1 kilo of ribs is generous in anyone’s language. You can see the quality of the food so we will definitely be back to sample the rest of the menu. There is a wide selection of drinks that are South African products, which is a great compliment to the food. Thanks to Nathan for being a great host for the night.

Visited a couple of weeks back, incredibly tasty food, the atmosphere seems a little off even if the restaurant is fully capacity. Bunny Chow trio was amazing but too much bread, for main i had the salt and pepper belly pork which was amazing, very yummy tasty seasoning. Nice beer too. Service was impeccable and nice humour too.

If you want a cozy place to eat with unique delicious flavors, you are in the right place. The owners of the restaurant were serving the tables and making sure each customer was happy with the order. They talked about thier time in South Africa and how they had a restaurant there as well. I loved the food, cooked to perfection. It's the only South African restaurant in York and it's a must try. I'm definitely coming again to try the new dishes they are going to add to the menu.

I first visited Karoo as part of the taster trail, I am gluten free and they adjusted the taster so I could have it even though they really didn't have to. We visited again in the evening and the food and drinks were amazing. The ribs were some of the best that I have had! Karoo should absolutely not be a hidden gem, it is far too good!

Updated to reflect level of service (and not food) because due to staffing they could not open in the afternoon and had not updated their hours to show they were indeed closed. We were left standing outside trying to figure out why it was closed when signage said open yet door was closed. Staffing all around is difficult, so best to check if open before making a journey. Surprising they could reply to this but not update special hours, its the same platform guys.

We had a great time here on Sunday. I arrived early and my buddy late, yet we were both made welcome although between us was half an hour. I was feeling pretty lonely to begin with but Nathan the host made me feel at home. The breaded brie with a cherry and lime sauce was as good as the tempura prawns with chillidip.. Oxtail potjie, and sweet potato bredie. Where both amazing , rich and warming. Just perfect afternoon autumnal fare. Cheers !
