Quite simply, outstanding. I have always been a little bit unsure of trying a restaurant like this, whether I would feel comfortable with the ambiance, and fine dining experience. I really did not need to worry. Staff are super friendly, knowledgeable, attentive but not intrusive. Surroundings are lovely and comfortable, immediately setting you at ease. I cannot think of a suitable adjective of high enough praise to describe the food. Every dish was exquisitely presented, tasted sublime and just the right amount of food to leave the restaurant sated. Thank you to the team at Meltons, my partner and I had a lovely evening last night, we will be back for sure.

Fantastic Food & Brilliant Service We’ve been several times now to this restaurant and it has always been a wonderful experience. The food is outstanding, ingredients put together in ways I could never imagine or hope to achieve. The service is warm, professional and calm - the whole atmosphere of the restaurant is like this. You’re left to enjoy your food and conversation at a pace where you take it all in. An absolute gem of a place - if you’re ever in York then a highly recommended destination, you won’t be disappointed. NB - The amuse-bouche served when I last went (a cauliflower, capers & many other ingredients I can’t remember - who knew cauliflower could taste like that!) was unbelievable, the chef who created that, what skill they have. Thank you.

Outstanding food - every dish was beautifully presented and utterly delicious. Clever combinations of ingredients and unusually for me I adored the dessert - a gorgeously understated and not over-sweet quince soufflé. I'm starting by saying I am by no means an expert on fine dining! This was a first for me but something me and my partner thought we would try for a special occasion. We were seated downstairs and there were only 2 other people in the room which for a Saturday evening was slightly unusual however after a few people arrived and were shown upstairs we assumed the majority of guests must have been seated up there. Our waitress was lovely, explained every dish she brought to the table. The food looked exactly how you would expect it too, beautifully presented and picture perfect! However i was disappointed in the choice and to be honest the taste. Again I am by no means an expert and was aware of the price this resturant charged but with it being a special occasion i was willing to pay more than i normally would however the £100+ bill wasn't worth it in my opinion and we did leave disappointed. Happy we tried it but I don't think we will be experiencing fine dining again anytime soon

We did have lunch at Melton as a start point of our trip in York, which we were not regret it. 3 courses menu was amazing and it was included canapés and breads as well. The food are very good. The portion are good to just fill your tummy perfectly. Don’t skip their dessert, it was amazing!

Amazing little restaurant with incredible food! We did the six course tasting menu and the wine flight. They were really flexible with the menu as I'm not keen on desert, so they swapped it for the cheese for me, which was very much appreciated! We loved every course, and would definitely go again!

Five stars without hesitation! We had a fabulous dining experience paired with excellent service. You can choose a la carte or tasting menu, which is 6 courses @ £62 or 7 courses @ £70. We went for 1 of each and chose a matching flight of wines, which we shared, as 1 each is a lot of booze 🤪. This was £38 and introduced us to some stunning new wines and previously unheard of grape varieties. To add to the surprises, one of the wines was from a Yorkshire Vineyard, Laurel Vines, near Driffield. Superb!!

We ate here after our sons wedding and an already memorable day was made a little more so as the food and service here was outstanding. The staff were friendly, helpful and informative without ever being intrusive. All of our meals were great to look at on the plate and so delicious to eat. Our three course meals were supplemented by tasty canapés, a delicious broth with small warm breads and flavoured butter and small delicate fudges and macaroons. The highlight though was watching my mum - who likes her food simple - eating everything put in front of her and wiping her plate clean by mopping up the wild garlic sauce with honey bread and chive butter. Highly recommended.

A 15 minute walk from the city center, Melton's Restaurant is a good choice for those who want a nice fine dining experience. The staff was very attentive, the space small - but not on top of each other - and clean. My favorite main was surprisingly the asparagus tart (don't judge until you've tried it), but the lamb was also quite delicious. The strawberry dessert was a great way to end the meal. I'd recommend this restaurant to others looking for a nice restaurant. Note: when we went, they only accepted cash - a rare thing in the age of Covid!

If I could leave 6 stars, I would. There wasn't a single mouthful of food I didn't enjoy. My wife and I had the seven course taster (although technically 6 because I couldn't possibly have fitted a cheese course in, so I asked for it to not be brought - and I'm a BIG eater!) with wine pairings. It was perfect for me too because I like good, firm flavours. I'm not a big one for incredibly light and subtle hints of flavour. I like flavoursome, well seasoned food - which is exactly what this was. Not to say that there wasn't subtlety at play - but I've had some tasting menus where you're just bordering on bland on the lighter courses. I'll try and sum up the good points, outside of the great tastes, without rambling - *Great service - went at our chosen pace (we don't like to hang around) *The pairings were nice. A couple of them tastes like they were ingredients in the dish, such was the harmony. *For the level of care into the dishes, I don't think the price is unreasonable. £75 for 6 courses at that level is spot on. And you don't feel short changed with the £40pp drinks pairings. We were tipsy! :) *Very full by the end. *Table service was informative without over stepping into being too long, which I hate. *there must be more, but the mind goes blank once it's time to think. The only thing I'd mention is nearby parking was a struggle at peak dinner leading into a sunny bank hol weekend, but you expect that. There's a small public carpark straight across the road and others nearby, but at our times, everything was full. We ended up on the free parking near York Racecourse which left a 1 mile walk, but given the lovely area and weather, this wasn't a chore. I'd park there and walk again. Will 100% be back.

Excellent food for the price point. The kitchen pace is a little on the slow side, but that's no problem if you're looking for a leisurely meal. The wine list is reasonably priced and we just went for one of the house wines, which was perfectly fine. We were staying at The Grand and it's a short 5 minute car ride away.

It would be 5 stars for the food - great presentation, fresh ingredients and tasty. Though we were informed they do ‘slow food’ the 3-course dinner took more than 3 hours given there were less than 10 tables we thought it was a bit too slow. The lights were also a bit too dim that we felt like falling asleep at some point during the wait.

Went this evening with my partner Fiona. We both had the scallops followed by cod, I had a souffle and botrytis pudding wine. The food was excellent, the service was brilliant, in fact the whole thing was five star. No wonder they have been in the good food guide for hundreds of years. Would thoroughly recommend.

I have dined here twice now and the meal has been wonderful on both occasions. It is easy to see that each item on each dish has been carefully planned and crafted. The pairing of the different elements on plate is exquisite. I particularly enjoyed the matching of the dried kumquat with the cured duck liver parfait. The decor is lovely with entertaining murals and a 'candlelit' feel. The tables are nicely spaced and the background music is pleasant. The wine menu is a fairly weighty tome and contains many delights. The hostess is a pleasure to talk to and very knowledgeable. Pictured is the selection of cheese desert and the rhubarb and blood orange desert. All in all a bargain for the price.

Wonderful tasting menu experience in this tucked away treasure! Everything exquisite with an explosion of so many different but complementary flavours. And it looked absolutely beautiful - edible flower garnish, fennel ice cream (heaven!) & perfectly sized portions so we didn’t feel 6 courses was too much. The food was exquisite! The combination of flavours was certainly put together by a chef who knows exactly what he's doing and what he wants to achieve! The small appetisers that come out before the starter were a brilliant touch, especially the 'lamb bon bon'. The American waitress we had was very attentitive and service was great. The only slight downside to this lovely meal was that we was seated upastairs with four other tables which was very quiet, and it seemed like everyone was listening to your conversation. A definite place for a romantic meal for two!

Excellent food with staff who have clearly been trained to reflect the quality of the restaurant; none of that "Who's for the fish?" nonsense here! The extensive wine list has a choice that will make you wish you had arrived half an hour earlier, but has excellent tasting notes and descriptions to help. Also, the cheese selection is very good. We visited as part of a regular reunion with old work colleagues whereby we take it in.turns to select a restaurant near our respective home town or a central location as we are spread around the country this time it was York. We book for lunch and ate from the set menu, we drank house wine. The service was excellent if a little slow but to us that did not matter as we were there to Chat and catch up a much as eat and it was good not to be rushed. The food was excellent and our waitress very knowledgeable about the menu and the history of the venue including the wall art. The price was reasonable for the quality of food. The location is a little off the tourist city centre route although I am told it's a popular venue it was very quite on a Thursday lunch time we visited. Fully recommended for a special occasion.

Fantastic evening. We have been wanting to come to Melton's for ages but have 'never got round to it'. It was worth the wait. The staff were all friendly, particularly the manager whose knowledge and passion for wine was refreshing. The food was delicious, creative without going over the top, leaving you wanting more but at the same time despite what appear to be small portions (compared to your average meal out) we left full and very satisfied. A really wonderful meal here, great value considering the quality and also the fact that appetisers are included. You would pay the same for a very average high street 3 course meal compared to a two course meal here with appetisers. The mushroom broth was out of this world and possibly the best thing I've ever eaten. I'd travel to York for that alone. The goats cheese and beetroot macaron as part of the appetiser was just amazing. I cannot fault this place at all. Our waitress was brilliant and so friendly. I hope this place continues to do well, it truly deserves success. Can't wait to go back.

Early bird menu is great value. Dishes are imaginative and most ingredients are locally sourced. For regular visitors there is also a "birthday club" that gifts you a free meal every year during the month you were born. Nice quiet atmosphere and attentive but unobtrusive service.

We had the tasting menu and accompanying wines as it was a friends birthday celebration. The food was fabulous and the wines were really interesting and varied. We were particularly taken by the plum sake served with the cheese course. The waiter was really well informed regarding both food and wine but made it fun by getting us to try and guess the region the wine was from and guess the grape. This was our choice and you wouldn't have to do that if you didn't want to. We were in an upstairs room which we had to ourselves (party of 12). The food was imaginative and beautifully presented. The courses were not massive but over the the 5 courses with complementary canapés and petit fours you were left pleasantly replete. I cannot praise Meltons enough and whole heartedly recommend.
