Absolutely fantastic 1 Michelin Starred restaurant. Fantastic modern british cuisine. Highly recommended.
Service is very friendly and attentive. Staff are very professional and welcoming.
I had asked the tasting menu not to have beef & pork and they kindly provided alternatives.
Highly recommend the tasting menu. It has about 10 dishes - impossible to pick a favourite as they are all absolutely superb. See pics for the dishes
The tasting lunch menu when I was there was about £95 - really good value for the quality and variety you get. I had a glass of champagne and then 2 small glasses of wine. All in all, it cost £150 and took just over 3 hours. It’s a really wonderful relaxing experience.

A real experience! Best dish by a country mile was the crab. Other dishes seemed on the salty side but delicious.
Very special evening and we really enjoyed it.. service is impeccable.. an expensive evening out not something you could do regularly unfortunately has to be special occasions only! Priced out of some people reach... and no alternatives to make it achievable.

Fantastic food, very well thought out seasonal tasting menu. Super relaxed, professional friendly service. Basically everything you would expect from a 1 Michelin star place from chef Tommy Banks and the team behind The Black Swan at Oldstead.

Excellent service, good food, high prices.
The tasting menu was the only dining option and we were happy with that. At the time the reservation was made, they inquired about dietary needs and allergies, and were happy to accommodate my vegetarian diet.

Went for an anniversary dinner to Roots in York as we had passed many times and wanted to try it out. Our main waitress, Jenny was fabulous and made our experience really enjoyable and her knowledge was incredible! Any questions we asked were met with a smile and a fountain of knowledge whether it was the food or the wine or general questions! This knowledge and service with a smile also applied to many other staff as we were served by several different people across the course of the evening which was something different to what you would normally expect but actually really nice! The menu was 11 courses which came out in a timely manner and were all very tasty and something we had not experienced before. It definitely was an investment with the price of the menu then the wine on top. We also did not need the aperitif which we ordered due to the amount of wine on the wine package no. 1 but did not know that prior to attending. I wasnt a great fan of the dessert but my husband absolutely loved it so just shows how different people like different things! Such an experience and the service was FABULOUS - since the pandemic I have experienced fairly poor service in the majority of places I have been but this was marvellous. Not something to be enjoyed every month as it is expensive but it was definitely a great experience and we shall be back albeit in a few years time! Great restaurant! Thanks Roots for a fabulous evening!

Wonderful meal. All dishes beautifully presented and full of interesting flavours. All staff attentive, friendly and yet discreet too ensuring a relaxed evenings dining. Favourite dish of the tasting menu was the crab although it was a tough choice to pick a favourite. The wine flight with the menu is paired perfectly with some really interesting yet clever choices. If you think the tasting menu might not fill you up, think again. We were well and truly satisfied by the time the fruit pastilles arrived!

I really wanted to rave about Roots. Beautiful building, fantastic location, carparking if needed literally behind. But I'm afraid we both came away unsure. The interior was pleasing, well spaced tables, stylish and very good (modern) background music. An avid fan of GB Menu, very familiar with the history of the rise to fame.
I'm afraid it's the little things which let it down for us. You might not be bothered about any of this so feel free to ignore!
After 3+ hours, the bench type seat became incredibly uncomfortable, and I have plenty of natural padding. The staff were warm and friendly but some of their attire seemed a bit scruffy. Does it matter if you're there for the food? We had made an effort so felt over dressed. I couldn't help but notice that some finger nails were also unclean. Basic to get right if you're in catering?
We'd completed the profile in good time and had our two preferences repeated to us before we began, which was great but then we were still served two of the items with no alternative offered. I was slightly bemused having said I didn't eat X, being told to give it a try. Sorry, but if I haven't eaten something for 40yrs, why would I try it again just to be sure? I did to be polite and it was lighthearted but I really didn't enjoy it! Why capture preferences?
After about 5 courses, we both agreed the best course thus far was the sour dough bread and chive butter!
Great to use seasonal produce but I didn't enjoy the repetition of flavours across courses, like verbena and charcoal. Two granitas, one flavourless. The beef tartare was over powered by the horseradish, however sparingly dotted onto the plate. No hint of pickle in the pickled mussels with the monkfish, no sign of the cauliflower puree under the fish, several smoky hints across a few dishes.
However miniscule/unimportant, I spotted 2 thunderbugs on my salad course.
The strawberry deconstructed cheesecake was very nice, 2nd to the bread and butter.
Excellent wine menu but really sorry, for £64, Aldi's albarino for less than a tenner left ours standing. (Yes, I do know my wines).
I'm afraid I wouldn't return, which pains me, this was not value for the experience. Sorry!

Best meal I've had, and that includes a number of Michelin starred restaurants. Superb flavours and presentation.
