The food has opened my eyes to how delicious vegan food can be. Some members of the family are vegetarian. Often, we don’t try each other’s dished and always try to find a place that have a few vegetarian dishes but their choices are limited. But at this restaurant, the menu was created for them. The service is also impeccable.. a gem in York!! Please chef, share your secrets with the world, we would be vegan in no time

The batter on our battered foods was more soft and soggy rather than fresh and crispy and the sweet and sour prawn and lemon chicken tasted identical apart from the lemon edge. Had to ask for chopsticks and when they came they were disposable ones, which was sad. Aside from those negatives, the service was fantastic, the restaurant is pretty and well laid out so you don’t feel rushed or crammed in, it’s fully vegan and has good natural light. Perhaps a little on the expensive side for the duck as it’s the same mock meat from across the road with just some veg, only a few pancakes and thin plumb sauce. Jasmin rice was good in texture. Fried noodles were fantastic! Spot on for flavour and mix of vegetables! Mushroom toast was also really tasty, if not slightly too crispy. I would go back and try different dishes, but wouldn’t go back for the same dishes apart from the mushroom toast. Being a fully vegan restaurant is fantastic but it would be better to see a little more effort in the creativity with the food and then it would easily be a 4 or 5 star.

9.9/10! Absolutely outstanding! I've been waiting for months for our trip to this side of the country and every bite was worth the wait!!! Firstly we ordered the duck and salt and pepper tofu starters. Incredible. The mock duck texture was everything I could have imagined. Even the sauce was mouthwatering! The salt and pepper tofu was divine. Every bite I had to chew slower and slower to really appreciate all of the intricacies of the dish! The ratio of crispiness to chewiness in the light batter was amazing. Not too much oil either! They even made a cucumber rose which they didn't have to! You know that feeling you get when you try something for the first time and then every time you try it after it never amounts to that first try?...The sweet and sour chicken 😍 (it's not on the actual menu so if you want that instead of the prawn be sure to ask if it's available) - was a pleasure so all-encompassing I closed my eyes to really take it all in... It was like I was trying my favourite meal for the first time again! My girlfriend let me try a bit of her chicken curry and wowzer! I don't know where they get their mock meats from but they are out of this world. They deserve to be in the top restaurants of the country, some sort of award or medal is required here! Thank you again team orchid! (The only reason I didn't give 10/10 was because the chair was slightly uncomfortable 😂)

We were so impressed with the food here. All of the dishes are vegan and taste amazing. We had the vegan chicken curry Mongolian style vegan beef stir fry with sides and they were delicious. I wish I had skipped lunch though as we couldn’t finish the food! Next time we’ll be more prepared.

Without a doubt the best Chinese food I’ve had in years. We often struggle to find a wide range of vegan options from Chinese takeaways, so it’s refreshing to have a fully vegan Chinese restaurant that makes such amazing food. We’ve been three times so far and order enough to make it hard to walk back to the car because it’s just that good! We can never wait to go back and the only reason we don’t go more is because we don’t live in York - if we did we’d be here at least weekly! 😂 wonderful friendly staff and has been Covid safe throughout the pandemic, food is just as good to take away as it is to eat in, parking at NCP Tanner Row is directly opposite and reasonably priced

Absolutely perfect. All of my pre vegan favourites in a Chinese, duck pancakes, sweet and sour king prawn, char Sui pork, in amazing vegan form. This has to be by far one of the best Asian restaurants that I have ever been to, including Chinatown in London, and it’s totally vegan! I am a hardcore carnivore and the food they cook and serve here will blow your mind. This is plant-based food at its very best; and you will not miss the meat at all. Some of the most outstanding dishes were the calamari and cumin lamb for starters, but the wow factor was from the crispy beef for main course. A perfect combination of crispy pieces of “beef” with a slight chew, drenched in a sticky, sweet sauce. Complemented beautifully with the fried noodles. We also enjoyed scallop balls (the texture was uncannily like fishballs) and lemon chicken (scarily realistic). The service is also incredible; our waitress Sharon made us feel so welcome and stopped to chat with is and our young daughter. If you are ever in York, this has to be top of the list of places to visit…it’s definitely worth the 4 hour drive from London! I only wish I could rate it higher than 5*

This place is a must if you are visiting York! Such wonderful food, amazing staff and lovely atmosphere. There were four of us, and although each of us absolutely loved our mains (vegan beef in OK sauce was superb), we all agreed that the shredded duck was the best thing we’ve eaten in a restaurant in a long while. I was visiting York and had no prebooked table anywhere. It was nearly 9pm and I this place caught my eye. How lucky was I to come across this wonderful restaurant! We were visiting our son up in York and had looked online to find somewhere suitable that wasn't a chain for a change and booked here at Orchid. Turned up just after 6 and the place was already busy. We had the duck pancakes, mushroom toast, scallops and salt n' pepper calamari to start, all were very delicious, stand out for me was the mushroom toast. Would have like a few more pancakes to go with the duck. For mains we had the lemon chicken, sweet and sour king prawns and the char sui pork along with mixed veg, king prawn rice and shiitake fried rice. These dishes were superb and really enjoyed it here. Service was very polite and attentive. We are close to Brighton and would love to have an Orchid here as well. Brighton has many 100% Vegan restaurants but haven't found one that serves Chinese to this standard. Only have a couple of photos as the rest were blurry. Would recommend to anyone.

I will start this off by confirming I am not a vegan, my girlfriend is...BUT: We could not recommend the food highly enough. This is by far the best vegan restaurant we have visited. For starters we ordered the gyozas, spring rolls & the shredded duck. When wrapped with the cucumber, onions & plum sauce...you cannot tell the difference between this duck & real duck, it is that good. We ordered a selection of mains, Mongolian beef (again excellent, just like beef), crispy tofu (chicken/prawn & tofu in batter) in Szechuan sauce. Noodles & special fries rice. We could not finish it all, we left a little space for dessert as we kept seeing them come from the kitchen. For dessert we had the chocolate orange cake (layered Jaffa cake) & the blackcurrant mouse cake, both excellent. We finished off with the filtered coffee & my gf commented "the best floater coffee ever" with vegan cream (the Calypso containing Tia Maria). Finally the staff, very very friendly, very bubbly, funny & welcoming. Great decor & atmosphere. A must if vegan visiting York, highly recommend to everyone.

I'm in York for a few days and was excited to try out one of the vegan options on offer in the city. Very impressed with Orchid - Tom Kha Soup was so flavoursome and tasty; the highlight of my meal. Also tried the Cantonese Style Vegan Prok Char Siu and Vegan House Special Stir Fry in Spicy Szechuan Sauce, which were lovely. I look forward to returning to York and visiting again!

Absolutely incredible food. It was so nice to be able to have a different take on asian food as a vegan rather than the usual tofu or black bean sauce. We were so excited about the beef dish and it did not disappoint. The portions are great, we ordered a starter, main, rice and noodles to share between 2 and it was plenty. Literally the best eating experience I've had. I am a vegan and was taken out as a treat by Dad and his partner. From the moment we stepped in to the last mouthful the experience was perfect. Staff: just brilliant , polite , tentative, smiles to die for and welcoming. Settings : contemporary and slick. Nice Jazz music set the ambiance. Food: frankly it's magic. I have never tasted anything like it. I consider myself a good cook but wow this is incredible. Even my folks were blown away and enjoyed every mouthful. I'll let the image do the work . Great Asian inspired vegan restaurant with plenty of options. I really couldn’t decide what to have (as I wanted everything!) but in the end I opted for General Tso’s Vegan Chicken, with the Shiitake Fried Rice. Both were delicious. I also had an Irish Coffee (made with vegan cream) after dinner - which was also very good. I hope one day to return so I can try more of the menu. Highly recommended for everyone; even the most sceptical carnivores!

Delicious, friendly, high quality! Great date night for a vegan and non-vegan. They have a large variety of food options and they taste so good! I loved their General Tso tofu, vegan beef, rice, and gyozas. Also their lemon cake had the perfect sweet and zesty flavors. I'm not the most ideological vegan but you can all trust me that the food here was faultless. The tastes and textures were superb. The 'calamari' and house special Szechuan had a batter that crunched in all the right places. Staff were lovely and the restaurant was immaculate. Sneaky suggestion for improvement stick a beer on draft but that is nitpicking.

We’ve tried a whole lot of different dishes and they all taste fantastic and very authentic, I would find it difficult to distinguish between the dishes served at orchid and places that serve meat-based Chinese food. Where do I begin... this restaurant is stupendous. Hands down this is the best vegan Asian food I have ever eaten. The mock Pork was incredible you simply must try it. What a find this place was! We visited York for a few days and this restaurant was just a short walk from our hotel. Yummy food and completely vegan too! Recommend that you book a table in advance, as the place is very popular. We did takeaway a couple of nights as it was fully booked on both Friday and Saturday and only open in the evenings. Takeaway menu has more options than restaurant menu, really enjoyed the vegan oyster sauce and tofu dish and mini spring rolls. Salt and pepper tofu starter was also really tasty. Thumbs up from me and highly recommended!

Myself and my carnivore boyfriend love this place!! It is not the cheapest, but definitely worth it, and we don’t feel like we are compromising on flavour with it being vegan. I love the OK Beef, and the gyoza. The owner is also lovely, and the staff are very attentive. Also, when they take the order, they write it down on a grid so they know which dish goes to which person, which just seems like such a clever idea!

Recently visited the restaurant while on hols, so good we had to return. The staff were amazing, very attentive and kind, they kept the restaurant spotless - probably one of the cleanest restaurants we have visited. The food was outstanding, the prawns were soo good, as were the dumplings and the way they prepared the veg. The desserts were lovely - hard to believe this restaurant is vegan only. Definitely the best restaurant we have been to for the quality, cleanliness and service - not to be missed - just wish we lived close enough to visit regularly. NOTE - you have to book.

Whether you are vegan or not this has to be on your go to list if you love great food and a laid back atmosphere. To anyone with a nut allergy it is safe to eat here! As someone with a severe nut allergy I was delighted to hear all the mains were nut free which is rare with vegan food let alone Asian quisine, so you can eat in confidence. I can't fault the staff for being so polite, informative and the chefs for being wizards at what they do ( you'd never know it's meat free). The food is tasty, well made and the portions are very generous. The restaurant is accessible for any and all and is easy to find on Rougier street. All in all I left feeling well fed and delighted with the service. I will be back!

I won’t eat this style of food anywhere else.

Ambiance was poor. A really noisy restaurant with no soft furnishings to absorb the noise. We couldn't engage in relaxed conversation whatsoever. The waiting staff were excellent. The menu was fine BUT gluten free for one of our group was a problem. The big GF menu had only one starter and no main course that didn't contain wheat and a choice was made off the main menu which was GF but not on the GF menu. Much of the food is deep fried hence lack of gf options. I would be inclined to try the place again because I like to support vegan businesses but I wouldn't have any deep fried food. I had the 'calamari' and 'spicy beef' neither of which felt vaguely healthy and I wouldn't have either again.

I've been vegetarian for about 10 years now. 2 things I've missed are bacon sandwiches and crispy beef in OK sauce from the Oriental Pearl at Clifton Moor. I was told about this place by a colleague. The broccoli and garlic was so lovely and we had jasmine rice, special fried rice (enough for 2 ppl), scizetian special stir fry, lemon chicken and sweet n sour tofu. Starters of prawnless crackers, scallops, gyoza and tom kha soup. Everything was delicious and exceptional value. Just under £100 for 4 including a bottle of wine. Eating Chinese food out as a vegetarian is always difficult as most restaurants only offer veg or some form of soggy fried tofu as their meat free option. The orchid changes all that. The food is excellent and very creative in flavour and texture, from the lamb skewers to the realistically chewy salt and pepper calamari. The star of the show was the shredded beef in ok sauce for us which had the crispy batter and meaty texture. Think of this as doing to Chinese food what York's once across the garden does to takeway food. It does have some issues. You'll need to order a fair few plates as the portion sizes are pretty small, we had 3 starters 2 mains and two sides for two and that was about enough(plus a bottle of house red). Without eat out to help out we would be looking at 50 quid which unfortunately prices this place out of regular visiting. They are a new restaurant and thus there were obviously some teething issues with service, being that it was quite slow, they were using a table to store glassware and a couple of the members of staff were clearly still learning the ropes . The menu was also clearly an early draft and was missing the rice and noodle sides which they were charging for, a more up tight diner would probably argue the fact that if a waitress offers a choice of rice and noodles with a main and they're not on the menu, you could easily assume they are free. The starters were also named as "small plates" and the general layout of the menu led to some confusion as to what format exactly you were ordering. That said, the food is the main part and that was brilliant so 4 stars for now. I'm sure the issues will be ironed out over time as these guys trouble shoot the post opening glitches.

Oh. my. goodness. I have only just been made aware of this restaurant. I have been waiting years for a good vegan chinese - why did nobody tell me about it sooner?! We have had the crispy OK beef, which was divine - great texture, very similar to the meat version of the dish (but no cruelty/better for the environment - yay!). The steamed bao buns were something new for me and very interesting flavours with chili and pickle. Mmmm. The battered sweet and sour 'chicken' was just perfect too. Wish I could give more stars. Upon entering, the staff were so friendly, showing us to our table and giving us ample time to decide our order. The decor is beautiful, and I appreciated the relaxing music being played. Onto the food... simply delicious! The General Tso's tofu was the star of the show, but everything we tried was stunning. I must also add - the waitress that served us mentioned it was her first shift, she was wonderfully friendly and did a great job. All in all, I really can't fault this restaurant. I will certainly visit again should I ever be in York again.
