Coming with high expectations set by my fellow reviewers we where rather disappointed. Not so much of the kitchen - it is what you would expect from a restaurant, yet by the service. Likely not enough trained, the management should more care about skills and experience of its staff. Standards like opening/tasting a bottle of wine should be known. I had to return my espresso 2 out of 3 times because it was cold. It simply stood at the bar for just to long not being served. Organisation mattes - and this is what management is responsible for.

I took my husband here as a birthday treat and he loved it. The food was incredible and the service was fantastic. The staff couldn’t do enough.
We were given breads with oil and special butter to nibble before the starters arrived. I ordered the scotch egg. At the end of the main course we were both stuffed but we forced ourselves to split a dessert because it was too good of an experience to not. We ordered a dessert called something like “milk and honey” and it was brilliant. 10/10. Would definitely recommend this for someone wanting a fine dining experience. We cannot wait to go back.

Lovely little restaurant inside the main building. Fantastic service and some items can be ordered to your room.. highly recommend 👍

Best Brunch Evah! We sat down straight away at the bar I had poached egg and avo on toast (poached eggs were just perfect, not too runny) and the avo was nicely seasoned. Husband had the Wild mushrooms, which were so delicious I had to insist we shared plates. We both had lattes - really really good coffee. Tissy served us and was really helpful and chatty. It's the second time we've been, and we'll be back!

Wonderful restaurant! 10/10. Food was superb, service excellent and ambience relaxing. Other restaurants in York, take note! Would happily visit again.

Just back from a fabulous afternoon celebrating my 70th birthday with a fantastic afternoon tea Staff very friendly and helpful. Food more than we could eat and excellent. Had walk around hotel area which looked excellent. Finally lovely photo on way out with doorman thanks to member of staff kindly stepping in to take family photo. Thank you for helping make a fabulous memory for us all. Look forward to visiting again

Had late lunch as part of a Spa package. There was some confusion as they didn't have us on their system but that was sorted after a couple of minutes. Service good. Very Agatha Christie decor. V good food. Not amazing but v good and decent value for money.

10/10 French toast, always a pleasure to be served by Ellen (who gives vital coffee recommendations)

The food was disappointing. I had a steak that came with chips and onion rings which were over cooked to the point of being inedible. Maybe just a bad night

Visited back in July for mine and my Mum's birthday, and on the back of that visit decided to book for our Christmas Day lunch as we enjoyed the meal so much.
Our Christmas Dinner was a 5 star experience. The welcome by the doorman, reception and then the restaurant staff was very pleasant. We were seated at a lovely table close to the open kitchen which is a lovely feature of The Rise. Unusually for a Christmas lunch we were not asked to pre-order which I liked and although the menu was fairly limited for this reason there would be something for most people on there and we were happy with the options available.
The waiting staff were lovely and attentive without being at all intrusive and happy to answer any questions and have a bit of a chat when time permitted. The atmosphere was great and the food fantastic. My only criticism would be that the sprouts were too hard!
We have eaten at several other restaurants for Christmas over the last few years including The Principal last year and The Rise far exceeded our previous experiences.
We're looking forward to booking again for next Christmas day (just put the sprouts on a bit earlier next year please!)

A large open plan restaurant, we dined while there were very few people present but even then the noise carried a bit so we could imagine if the restaurant was full it would be very loud. We must say the food was delicious, as vegetarians we selected one of every single vegetarian dish and shared all the food - the sweet potato with pesto was particularly delicious. If we hadn't immediately scoffed our food I might have had a chance to capture a photo! We also had a lovely bartender making cocktails, very knowledgeable. However, one large down side that did impact our evening was the very distinct aroma of fried food that the restaurant had, despite being seated at one of the tables farthest from the kitchen we could still smell the fryer. Perhaps there was an issue with the extraction fan on the particular night we dined? This is really the main reason we would be apprehensive to dine here again.

Nice set up - we enjoyed the live music, had good view of the kitchen (so you can watch food being prepared) and received generally friendly service. The main courses (we had the pork belly and the trout) were tasty but both were quite oily and rich and lacked balance.

Great place for something that bit special. The staff were great and the food was good. Felt very comfortable and would go again.

Lovely food, perhaps staff could have been a little more attentive and welcoming bearing in mind it wasn't busy. Lovely decor and will be booking again

Just been here for afternoon tea for my daughters birthday, we had a lovely tea, attentive staff nothing too much trouble, they have lifts for a wheelchar to go up the few steps in the foyer very pleasant and helpful doorman and like wise the staff who operated the lift up the steps to the rise rwstaurant and terrace, excellent all round

Fabulous food that tastes as good as it looks. Those with larger appetites may need a few extra carbs, but worth a visit.

(Translated) The food is very good, the attention is good, the atmosphere is not very nice. Half of the room is the restaurant, the rest a bar. The order in which the plates were brought, all separated, was not adequate.
At first it took a long time to seat us at the table. First because they said they had no place, which is not true, and then they told us that they had no food. In the end they put something together and we were able to eat several tapas that were very tasty.
