Reviews of The Star Inn The City
W. M.
An absolutely incredible venue with lovely decor, amazing food and some of the most hospitable staff.
This was our second time going to the Star Inn having visited several years ago, and we knew the quality of service they provide is top tier. This visit didn't disappoint, with prompt order taking, extremely friendly staff and plenty of advice on selection when needed.
The drinks were as amazing as ever. We tried a range or cocktails and wine, all of which were extremely flavorful and a great addition to our evening.
Trying out all 3 courses, we were most impressed with the starters and puddings - the standout dishes being the pressed Thrikleby duck which was very rich and meaty, and the sticky date pudding for dessert with a variety of sauces and ice cream that it paired extremely with!
A slight let down for the meal were the mains. Having been told that our lamb would come medium rare, it turned up with very little colour. Whilst this didn't detract from how tasty the dish was, it was slightly disappointing. The Nose-to-Tail pork was also a little bit dry in certain selections. This was brought to the attention of the staff, who were very apologetic and accounted for this and made up for it. A minor disappointed but in no way did this change how amazing the rest of the evening was.
Will definitely be returning in future as this a wonderful venue with so much character; I would highly recommend for a celebratory/lavish meal!

The restaurant is located on the North Side of the River Ouse, opposite the West wing wall of the bridge. See pics.
Great location over looking the River with an outside area, but we were inside as was busy, tastefully set.
The food, we had the halibut and lamb, was incredibly tasty. Compliments to the Chef as this really was a tour for taste buds. The subtlety of the fish dish where all the ingredients coming through was magnificent.
The drinks took a bit a time coming out as it was a sunny day so was busy on the patio, but who cares when the food is this good.

Great atmosphere during the summer. Food was beautifully plated but tasted average if not too salty. My sticky toffee pudding had a pretty presentation but the brownie was too dry and the toffee pudding too sweet. Mocktails were too sweet for me; tasted like it came out of some concentrated syrup cordial.
Overall, food was very pricey for the quality. I felt I’ve paid too much just for my eyes to feast on the food. Check out the spring onion with roots in all its glory served with my halibut dish.

The former waterworks engine house at the rear of Lendal Hill House is a Grade II listed building and thankfully underwent a massive restoration from its poor state in 2013-14. The resulting restaurant occupies an imposing riverside location and is beautifully appointed, both inside and outside.
Ate as a group of six on the riverside terrace and the food was excellent. Service was very friendly and attentive but a little slow at times. This was a Monday evening and so maybe they were a little busier than they had expected. Nevertheless, the quality of the food and the helpfulness of the staff warrants a 5-star review.

What a great way to end our first day in York. As we had already eaten a full meal during the day we were only looking for something light to eat and a refreshing glass or two of Rose’
It’s not the cheapest but definitely well worth the visit and we will be back soon.
An excellent table outside on the deck overlooking the river, served by amazing friendly staff, thanks.
B. S.
The food is of excellent quality and beautifully presented, with a delightful drink selection to accompany the food. This makes The Star undoubtedly the best restaurant in York!
The staff should also be commended for their politeness and efficiency. A special thank you to Katie and Georgia for their attentiveness and admirable work ethic.
M. W. H.
We had a lovely meal here. Service was great, all the staff we very helpful & friendly. Dog friendly in the bar area. Actual restaurant is lovely & a great location. The food was lovely & we liked how wines were paired with the food. Would highly recommend. Worth booking as it was full both times we visited.
L.
My first visit here and we decided to try the Sunday lunch. The food was plentiful and tasted really good. We also tried a few cocktails all of them also very good. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Our main waitress was Katy and she was lovely. She couldn't do enough for us but still gave us the space we needed to enjoy our food. The restaurant has a lovely setting and is definitely worth a visit.
B. S.
My lunch was excellent, both the chicken main as well as the rhubarb cheese cake were delicious - probably my favourite food in York during our short stay here. My partner‘s pork main and her pistachio sponge dessert were okay. Would come again on another trip to York.
I. L.
Lovely nourishing food- the lamb was a bit on the pricey side at £28- beautifully tender and only just cooked and extra good as it was seasonal, but really worth £23 absolute max.
The game burger is brilliant and definitely more than a substantial snack. Also very prompt polite service and clean, pretty toilets.
D. N.
Top notch food in the centre of York in an old historic building with great views onto the river. Expensive but well worth it. The venison was ace and so was the lamb.
D. S.
The Star Inn The City was an amazing experience in all areas. The ambience is cosy and unique with low key lighting. The people that work there are all extremely well mannered and very attentive. The food is exceptional quality. With each meal you can tell every unique element has been carefully thought out and cooked perfectly - it all tastes absolutely delicious!

7 of us were here for a 70th birthday meal,we ate at 5ish,the waiting staff are excellent at their jobs, engaging, friendly and had excellent knowledge of the menu. All but one of us had a starters,I had the scallops which I'd not tried before but I thought was a bit bland. My main was venison which was excellent and taste (especially the venison sausage roll) others had the pork chops which were cooked perfectly. I had the lemon/blackberry tart for desert which I was disappointed with, it must have just come out the fridge because the pastry was cold. We sat inside which was clean and air conditioned. This place is prices but worth it for that special occasion.
S. C.
Stayed in York for our joint birthday. We checked reviews and decided on The Star Inn The City.
We arrived to find inside was bookings only, luckily we had. There is seating outside overlooking the river also.
The staff and meals were great and very well presented, during the course of the evening the waitress found out it was a birthday celebration and surprised is with chocolate and fruit. Lovely touch.
Not cheap but we'll worth a visit. If we lived nearby we'd definitely visit again
K. D.
Great service, interesting menu. The cheese and tomato trifle starter is a bit bonkers and very filling, but tasty. Pork chop had perfect crackling and super spicy sauce. Would love to try sitting on the huge terrace next time.
A. R.
Splendid find great location on the river great terraced area. Food was impeccable beautiful presentation and flavours. Good service. Pricing in line with the quality. Top draw!
D. J.
Great find in a great location. Traditional pub grub vibe on a fine dining level. Staff were all a credit to the place 100% going back.
B. N.
I noticed this place has mixed reviews, and some friends also told us the same before we visited. I now probably know why.
I’d say our visit was almost perfect. Beautiful restaurant, nice sunset, friendly service. You definitely want to try their cured salmon, scallops, duck and surf and turf. These dishes were absolutely delightful and seasoned perfectly. I also liked the generous cut of beef tartare but it slightly lacked flavours (sour, spicy and saltness which you expect from good tartare) which was less impactful than other dishes we tried.
Perhaps those who were less amazed in their visit should try my recommended dishes (not tartare) as they definitely were worth the visit.
D. C.
A lovely meal in surroundings that make it feel like a proper occasion. The staff were attentive and it didn't feel cramped in the restaurant with well spaced tables. Expensive but worth it for the quality, presentation and flavor.
S. W.
Had a really lovely Sunday lunch here with family visiting from down South, great and friendly service would most certainly recommend and will be back! 😁
G. B.
What a fantastic experience. The food is well prepared and very fresh.
The service was impeccable, our server was friendly and courteous throughout the meal and made us feel welcome. She was attentive in just the right way.
As foodies we were very impressed at the quality of the food being produced by the kitchen and the pairing of wines was on point!
This is a very well thought out and well presented restaurant which is run well by consummate professionals. We will certainly be returning.
G. T.
Simply perfect. A warm summers eve on the river side terrace. Excellent, very professional service. Food was delicious, something for for everyone including traditional Yorkshire dishes which we wanted to sample. Great selection of local beers and elegant wines. Will definitely come back.
D. S.
Fantastic experience from walking through the door to leaving, food was outstanding and service was impeccable
S. K.
The Star gets mixed reviews. We've dined here 3 times in the last 3 years and each time we have thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Great Yorkshire based menu with wide variety of choice. No doubt it is an expensive restaurant , two people, 3 courses, 2 cocktails a beer , no wine £150. All I can say is that the quality and surroundings make it worth it.
We will go again on special occasions. Totally recommend.
C. H.
If you had put 10 stars for this I would have given it... what a beautiful place to eat. Staff are very polite and attentive to your needs, nothing too much trouble, it is a bit pricey on the main menu but the lunchtime menu is spot on for where the restaurant is and the service.. but do consider the main menu it will not disappoint, worth saving up for.. and indulging yourself...
a. H.
Beautiful views especially on a sunny day. I had the chicken with a side of truffle chips and was Beautiful food and good cocktails
N. G.
Fabulous bar with an amazing selection of beers and a fabulous view over the river. Struck lucky as a walk-in, as the place was pretty much full from the time we arrived until the time we left.
The staff we very polite and friendly, and really added to the experience.
Would highly recommend anyone stop off for a cool drink and a bite to eat.
S. B.
Went above and beyond to make our celebration special. Staff friendly and very helpful and the food wow.
G. W.
Lovely pub by the River in York. Great outdoor terrace to enjoy the sun, friendly staff and one of the best roast dinners I've ever had. Can't recommend the place enough!
M. A.
Went for a little nibble and a drink but would gladly come again with friends for a meal in the evening. Very professional service, great food and great selection of wines.
J. B.
This inn is in a prime location by the river at lendal bridge.its not cheap but it is good value. The setting is superb, the service is efficient without being in your face and the smallish but varied menu is all enticing and the dishes are made up of good quality ingredients cooked to perfection. If you fancy it then my advice would be to book a table.
R. R.
Helpful over the phone and friendly..lovely setting , plenty of space for 4 at the round tables..the waiter was lovely, friendly and efficient. THE FOOD !! Very flavourful. Had 3 courses and each one was perfect. No complaints and that from someone who can usually find something to complain about. Top food, top service, top location. 1st visit and already planning on going back.
A. F.
beautiful location amazing food and fabulous staff. A special thanks to the young gentleman that escorted us to the correct location of the river cruise 'you went above and beyond' would 100% recommend the food was delicious. My daughters a vegan so possibly a couple more vegan options would be nice. Keep up the great work you all do .
L. J.
Beautiful romantic dinner with outside seating that has covers and heaters. Food is gorgeous and very sophisticated. Highly recommend!
T. S.
We had a special dinner at The Star Inn, the food was really tasty and despite the weather we enjoyed being outside on the deck with the heaters. Our waitress was so lovely and made us feel really welcomed. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for something special in York.
I. F.
Had a lovely meal here this evening. Excellent food and drink, a great welcome, brilliant service and the icing on the cake was a table overlooking the river Ouse. Absolutely perfect. Thanks to all the staff at The Star in the City for getting our stay in York off to a wonderful start. 5🌟
m. a.
Went for dinner on.a Saturday night, very busy. Booking ahead advised. This is a really pleasant pub/restaurant by the river in central York. 7 of us in a group. The food was very well presented but, I thought a bit expensive. My Surf and Turf was the most expensive on the menu, it was ok but not great. Others in our party really enjoyed the food. With drinks, wine and service charge it about £50 a head without desert. Service was very good.
K. B.
Excellent food and Sevice.
Staff very attentative and friendly.
J. C.
We had a phenomenal experience! The food was delicious and the view and service were wonderful! We ordered 5 different starters/nibblers and 4 entrees. We enjoyed every bite! If I lived here, I would come back frequently! Thank you The star inn the city for providing us with an incredible experience!!
A. B.
Fabulous food in a fabulous location with fabulous service. What more could you ask for.... A bit pricey but worth it.
g.
Very nice. Great service. Nice environment.
D. C.
Excellent Sunday lunch. The staff were very accomadating from increasing the number of diners with no prior warning ,to making a individual dessert. The food was great and the air conditioning on a very hot day was an added bonus.
J. B.
What an amazing quality of food.
9 of us dined here together & not one poor comment about any of the food.
Very attentive service in a nice atmosphere.
Well worth a visit.
T.
The food is absolutely amazing, especially the sticky toffee pudding. Would definitely recommend for a date night or get together. The staff were so lovely and welcoming.
D. B.
Lovely experience from start to finish. Staff were polite, attentive and friendly without being over the top. Food is good quality and well executed. A real treat.
A. G.
Beautiful food, beautiful wine, beautiful service. Plus an extra little surprise to congratulate us on our recent engagement.
C. S.
Thank you to staff on Sunday afternoon. Having had no space on the terrace we were seated inside. Then without asking offered a seat on the terrace 10 mins later. Moreover iced water for my spaniel. Recommend!
M. K.
Food was rather tasteless. It looked ok, but had no taste. Service was nice. I was sitting under really strong air conditioner. Desert was the best part of entire experience.
s. B.
Nice location, you pay for it mind. Only table service that you will pay for. I still enjoyed it. Long wait to be served but that was OK in the end. It was all about the food guests but money was money I guess.
D. J.
Food was good, service was average to good. Certainly in-between average food and really great food. Mains on the menu seemed a little hard to pick. Starters and desserts were better. Good views
C.
We loved this restaurant. It had great views and was lively but not too loud. The food was outstanding - we had the venison and lamb rump.
C. R.
Pretty chaotic visit. Looked under staffed and unorganised.
Nice glass of wine but after watching beers sit on the bar for 10mins and get a straw put in to mix them up abit befor serving then wasn't ideal to see.
C. O.
Always wanted to visit here and finally got the chance. Food was very nice overlooking the river was a huge added bonus and the wine was lovely too. Will definitely be back soon
J.
My boyfriend and I had a really good experience yesterday evening. Great food and atmosphere even though it was raining. The waitress we had was really friendly and gave me free dessert when I said I was celebrating my last day at work and my getting a new job. Would highly recommend and will come back.
T. W.
Great service worthy of five stars. Outside area in the sun also a plus! Local Brew York beers on tap and serve a decent full English breakfast.
J. S.
Delicious food and desert! Well presented and great portion! Beautiful place to dine as well! Highly recommend it!
M. N.
Very good food and very nice service👍
L. K.
Had a gorgeous lunch here- photo cant do it justice but it was an amazing steak sandwich! Service was top class, super polite waitress who couldn’t do enough for us despite the fact it was a really hot day and she had to deal with a very busy restaurant all the time wearing a mask.
Lovely outside area. Definitely need to book at weekends/busy times but well worth it
M. B.
Lovely spot to have a drink by the river, the one downside is their slyness in adding on a 'discretionary' service charge onto the bill by default - we had left a tip on the table and then noticed they'd done this - hope this unethical practice doesn't catch on elsewhere.
S. M.
Awesome restaurant on the water. Highly recommend ham hock bon bons for starters, and EVERYTHING on the dessert menu. Mains left me wanting more flavour, otherwise highly recommend
L. B.
Good location, nice inventive menu helpful staff.
R. S.
Very good food. Excellent service. We wanted to order everything on the menu. In the end, I ordered the cauliflower. This dish is so easily overcooked but not this one - it was perfectly cooked- it still had some bite to it - cheese, salty and sweet.
A. G.
We enjoyed an afternoon on the terrace overlooking the river. We only had drinks but enjoyed them immensely. The staff were friendly and attentive.
S. T.
Absolutely brilliant, staff were really friendly. George was our server and very polite. Food was amazeballs, will definitely be going back again
P. S.
If visiting York on a cold winter's day, this is a nice warm restaurant to stop at for lunch, with a delightful outlook over the park.
The food was delicious - it was possibly the best steak sandwich I've had, and the chili bread was amazing (I had to ask for more). The vegetarian potato dish was also great.
It's good that they cater for kids, although the mac and cheese was on the small side if you have older kids (but perfectly sized for our 5 year old).
Service was friendly, but a bit slow at times (not sure if thet were understaffed, or if the layout is not conducive to seeing the customers).
Would love to visit again in summer, and sit out on the deck while enjoying another delicious meal.
S. H.
What a lovely place, went with friends and sat outside on the terrace for drinks. The staff and manager were amazing and we had a great laugh with them.
I. F.
Lovely place great except for my friends dinner was cold. Sent back and got a fresh food otherwise would of given a 5👍
G. F.
Took my wife for a meal here, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was excellent although expensive but very well worth the money, will definitely return next time we are in York.👍👍
B. K.
Love this place, one of the best meals ive had in a very long time
Best pork belly and lamb ive ever tasted plus the steak tartar was tender and delectable.
Would definitely recommend and visit again
A. M.
Fantastic location by the water. The actual building and the decor inside absolutely beautiful. I had the scallops and the halibut and I enjoyed them. Were they the best I have ever had? No but good dishes nonetheless.
As a side note I love that all the staff including the chef came out to sing happy birthday to a nearby table!
R. D.
Great venue - food was exceptional! I had the best lamb dish I have ever had, see photo (partly eaten as it wasn't until I tasted it that I realised it was worth remembering), tasted better than it looks! Overall 5* for what is on offer here, everything was brilliant. Great wine list, will visit again!
S. D.
We only had drinks so can't comment on food.
Had a table on the patio overlooking the river, great location, friendly staff and immaculately clean and tidy
F. M.
I had a birthday lunch here with friends and I was amazed by the beauty of the venue and the quality of the food they produce. Absolutely outstanding!
The service was perfectly timed, even with all the tables full. The waiters showed a perfect understanding of our tastes and suggested accordingly. This is quite rare to find today, a huge praise for having such a motivated and professional staff.
They have a huge selection of beers on tap, cask ales and bottled beers, as well as their gin and spirits!
I highly suggest this place for any occasion, from an afternoon drink to a more formal dinner/lunch
S. T.
Incredible food and service will definitely be going back you can see why one of their other restaurants held a Michelin star.
T. S.
3 stars is all i can manage here I'm afraid
Sometimes things aren't what it says on the tin
This claims to be something far better than it is
I had a chicken club sandwich for lunch and I've had better from chain pubs with mass produced food
It was mediocre at the best
Just a run of the mill greasy sandwich with some frozen chips
I thought it was a real Michelin star venue....
NOT FOR ME
A. W.
A great place for a relaxing drink, with wonderful helpful staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our stop off here for cocktails
D. H.
Lovely place, it has had quite a make-over. Love the log burner, fabulous addition. Great for the cold weather! Nice friendly service. It has a great expanse of seating outside, but unfortunately, it was closed off due to the river bursting it's banks. Will hopefully be back in the summer to enjoy the outdoor seating.
C. R.
Me and my partner thought we would pop over and have a drink before our meal. It was awful outside and we were a good hour early. The waiter was lovely and said we could just eat straight away, much to our surprise!!
It was lovely and warm, we were looked after immediately! We felt very special.
The food came in good time and it was probably one of the best meals I've had in a long time!
My partner asked a question about where they source the beef from ( being a farmer he is genuinely interested) the waiter gave us indepth knowledge about who they buy the meat from and really knew his stuff.
We really enjoyed our visit and will be recommending to everyone.
j. J.
Happy to give The Star in The City a 5 star rating we had a wedding meal for 6 in February. The food was excellent they adjusted our meal to suit my request. The staff were extremely kind and helpful. A special thank you to Charlotte who looked after us and Ellen who dealt with us at the booking and kept us informed about the menus .
We will definitely be coming back .
Thank you Paul and Anne-marie x
A. B.
Food was delicious, staff were super helpful and they even made my sister a little chocolate and fruit plate that said 'congratulations' after we mentioned we were celebrating her graduation. Was also very affordable for a Michelin star restaurant. Highly recommend
A. H.
Thinks it punches above its weight. The food is undoubtedly very good, the beer range is very lacklustre and my wife tells me the ladies loos are a disgrace as regards cleanliness and broken taps.
M. B.
Just loved it, food was excellent and service very good. Our waiter Chris was attentive and amusing. Birthday present from family. Would go again when we are back in lovely York
J. C.
Arguably the best place we visited when we were in York. Delicious, creative meals, friendly and personable service, beautiful wine list and set in gorgeous gardens. What more could you ask for. Do not miss this place. We would go back in a heartbeat!
A. M.
Wonderful food here. Service was exceptional from every member of staff. Attentive, helpful, friendly and professional, and a really lovely setting too
B. K.
Wonderful menu, lots of gluten free options. Staff are very friendly and service excellent.
Will definitely return.
Lovely location in York.
R. M.
Lovely service, wonderful food, really friendly manager. Great location by the river too!
C. M.
Fabulous food, great service. Will definitely go again.
J. S.
More restaurant than pub but great food and setting. We had Sunday lunch in the River Room. The roast beef was tender and had a great flavour. The staff were friendly and there were plenty of them to deal with the volume of people (it was pretty packed). Would love to come back in the summer and sit out on the deck by the river. Worth booking as it's a popular spot. ££-£££
D. G.
Excellent restaurant!!! David the waiter was very kind and attentive. The food was delicious and the place very nice. It is in the center of the city, I recommend it 100%
A. K.
A delightful pub, bar restaurant next to river with riverside views from restaurant. I didn't eat there so can't say about food but currently in Jan 2019 it has a tippee tent and warm sauna fire which is lovely to sit in
p. d.
A real treat to fine such a fine restaurant on out visit to your, staff and customer very friendly, food excellent, would recommend pig head to tell very tasty.we liked the idea of wine paring for each dish.
L. 1.
Brilliant. Lovely Sunday roast and just general vibe. Attentive but unpretentious service. Slightly upmarket but you can't really go wrong for a bit of a treat.
S. B.
Place has loads of old world charm. Food oh dear pie was bland and pastry was hard .
A. P.
Went today for Atul Kotchar guest chef lunch....superb. Andrew Pern spoke to every guest and Atul himself followed later. Food and ambience second to none!
C. M.
Fantastic food, I had Yorkshire pudding for starter's followed by lamb rump.
At £9. I thought the Yorkshire pudding was possibly £1.50 overpriced and no option as to how well done the lamb was cooked, but that's only me.
C. H.
Lovely setting in York by the river and the atmosphere was really good. The service and the food were excellent and we throughly enjoy the evening, well worth a visit.
D. R.
It was a brilliant experience and Olivia made it special because he asked us was we celebrating anything special and it was are 35 anniversary and brought us a pudding with happy anniversary on it and made ate night 5 stars
S. A.
Incredible meal for our last evening in York. All of the food - particularly the lamb - was delicious and plentiful. Staff and service were first class. We'll definitely be back!
D. S.
Food is not bad, a bit pricey for what it is, but the views are awesome and generally the atmosphere is very good. A bit classier than most of what York has to offer.
J. S.
Very stylish establishment. We only had a drink, so I can't comment on food, but, the menu looked impressive. Staff were lovely & very efficient.
G. R.
Lovely location, friendly staff, good food at a price. Definitely a special treat restaurant
J. E.
Only had a drink but wonderful location. Good looked good. Wine wad great
J. H.
Fab birthday lunch sat outside in the sunshine by the river. Glorious food, and our dogs were made very welcome too!
J. C.
Only had a drink there but the service and surroundings are 5 star. Everything about the Star in is 5 Star.
S. T.
Every element of each dish was created so well and the service was amazing!
M. F.
Lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. Service was great abs a nice selection of gin's and beer
M. G.
Great view of river on the balcony, tankovna beer, cod loin with mussels in white wine sauce highly recommended if seafood lover
j. d.
If I travel via York, I always linger for an hour at the Star by the river..,especially in sunshine. The staff are great even during the stress of busy times.
C. S.
Beautiful food and atmosphere, great setting overlooking the river 👍
J. H.
Only popped in for a drink but the service was excellent. There was a lovely holiday atmosphere.
d. a.
Service was courtouise and ok meal was at best reasonable bit over priced had coffee after normally served with additional treat but no even if charged more would of made overall experience acceptable just run of the mill restaurant
P. S.
Popped in for a glass of wine served by Charlotte will definitely be going back to eat. Great atmosphere..
M. S.
Delicious food. Lovely setting. Excellent Service. Highly recommended
z. j.
We had a lovely table outside perfect summer evening with delicious food and friendly service. Hopefully, we will be back.
E. P.
Delicious food, lovely location, and excellent service. A bit pricey, but definitely worth it.
D. W.
Absolutely fab breakfast here, great location on the river and lovely staff.
K. G.
Sat on the terrace once requiring the umbrella for the rain, once for the sun! Beautiful setting. Well managed, with friendly efficient staff. Food was excellent as was the wine and beer on tap. Fish and chips were amazing. The inside restaurant looks lovely so would suggest booking for busy times. We will definitely come here again when we return to York.
T. S.
The vista from the restaurant is lovely and the food of excellent quality. However the time taken to get served, the pricing and the portion size (the main course was starter sized and they even underfilled their pint glasses!) means that it doesnt get a higher rating
F. B.
We went for lunch, which was fabulous. The staff were great and, on finding out it was our wedding anniversary, they brought us an extra dessert. Yummy. I had a Jamaican coffee as an after lunch treat. Very good experience overall. We will definitely visit again. Thanks
K. M.
Very mixed experience. My starter was amazing and mains were not good, my husband had the opposite experience. In short, glad we tried it but won't be going back.

Lovely food, staff. Great terrace to sit and watch the river
A. H.
Nice relaxed drink on the terrace. Very chilled and a lovely waitress
C. C.
We visited this place to celebrate our anniversary. The food was exquisite, the ambience was perfect, the setting was beautiful and the staff were absolutely lovely. I do not have a bad word to say about this place. It is simply amazing. Definitely somewhere everyone ought to try. I guarantee you'll return.
P. M.
Wonderful service, food and atmosphere. Attentive waitress. All food was flavoursome and delicious.... Recommend the Thirkleby duck starter followed by North Sea cod loin. Perfect.
H.
An absolutely delightful venue, with amazing and interesting food. But the best thing about The Star was Hattie, who served us. She is the epitome of quality service. Her attitude and attention detail made the night for us. She was not intrusive, but had a way with her that made us feel special. Perhaps the management could use her to train some of the other staff who we encountered. I must mention Lucy who is on the door, another person who understands what quality service is about. Thanks for a brilliant night.
M. M.
Nice restaurant. Friendly staff. Food is very posh but I felt it was under-seasoned. Not as tasty as I would have hoped. Still worth a visit.
E. F.
Great place to relax and unwind after pounding the streets of York. Very dog friendly and helpful staff
J. M.
What to say About this establishment... it was just splendid. Service, meals, atmosphere, everything was great. I get the steak of the day and the meat was delicious, exactly medium rare and awesome. Desserts were divine. And still the thing I will remember the most will be beer. I love lagers, and original lager is from Pilsen, Czech Republic. They have got it here, in tank, and I have to say that I have never had such a great pilsner outside Czech Republic. Temperature, foam, freshness, everything was Just like in Pilsen brewery. Hats off to the staff, overall truly wonderful experience. Must visit if you are in York!
Z. B.
Beautiful setting, great cocktails.
Pet friendly. Helpful and friendly staff.
Only had drinks, but food looked and smelt amazing.
F. D.
Good food and ambiance with great service at reasonable prices. Not the cheapest but well worth it.
M. N.
Lovely view of the river and great service. Idea stop while you wait for a boat trip.
A. W.
Excellent and attentive service with comfort food raised to an exceptional level
M. S.
Really good table by the river. Great views. Cannot comment on the food as we were booked in somewhere else.
N. H.
Beautiful Michelin star restaurant by the river Ouse very happy pleasant staff. Lovely food
Would definitely come here again
F. R.
Beautiful place, great staff and delicious food. We showed up at lunch time, 4 of us and my dog with no reservation and still managed to get a table on their lovely terrace with canal view. Service has been lovely and quick despite it was busy, so we really appreciate. We started with crayfish tacos (great dish) and mussles. Tried their beef Sunday roast which was huge and juicy, and the cod loin dish (perfectly cooked and the sauce was brilliant). The fried sides we tried were a bit oily but hey oh, overall a great experience. Will certainly hop back in when in York.
T.
We went for a few drinks and snacks in the beer garden - it's phenomenal on a warm sunny day! Great views, great cocktails and great vibes.
One of my friends left her hat behind - and the bouncer ran up the stairs and politely handed it to her before she could leave. We definitely felt looked after! :)
J. C.
Had a very nice meal here. Attentive staff. Good grub. Excellent location.
J. J.
Lovely lunch with friends. Service and food were excellent
D. B.
We had just done a riverboat cruise (in the heatwave) and wanted somewhere to sit , have a drink , and people watch and this area - which is literally next to the river, ticked all the boxes
S. B.
Had a superb meal at the Star Inn the City. Great outdoor setting on river, a nice terrace with loads of space.
The food was superb. I got the special menu item of Beef Fillet Tail, was a surf and turf option with some King Prawns. It was absolutely superb, cooked to perfection, and every mouthful to be savoured.
Other courses and emals in the group were excellent too.The kids' burgers were a cut above the usual standard too, really tasty, and a great size for hungry children.
Service was very good, attentive and friendly.
Highly recommended.
T. J.
A long awaited birthday meal, having being unable to visit Harome for an overnight stay, we chose the next best thing closer to home. Not the cheapest of places, but for a special treat, the service, quality of produce and ambience was wonderful. A nice little touch to be asked if our visit was for a special occasion, and then to be presented with a birthday muffin, all be it a little old. A good selection of wines including recommendations for each dish, the drinks menu didn't advertise beers/lagers but when asked for there was a choice I believe.
We left feeling satisfied but not uncomfortably full and we'll definitely return.
J. R.
Popular place loads of staff but slow with orders
P. M.
We went to Star in the City on 29th August for my birthday meal. There were six of us and I would highly recommend it. The food was very good and enjoyed by all. Our waitress - Charlotte- was very good and answered every question we asked about the food/drink without having to refer back to anyone. We ate inside but there was plenty of space and not overcrowded.
P. R.
Just had dinner here. Bit of delay getting in but once inside very impressed. Food and drink were very good and staff friendly and efficient. Meals came quickly but we were not rushed. Had a mix of choices fro main menu and the specials, all good. Good choice of drinks and wine by the glass.
D. D.
Lovely venue and we had a great time. Food was OK, nothing special tho for the price. Also felt a 15% service charge on the bill was excessive. Won't be rushing back for food but may go for drinks on the patio which was lovely. Our waiter was great.
N. O.
Lovely restaurant and bar.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Nice toasty real fireplace which was well maintained well throughout time we were there.
Only stopp for a coffee but was very nice and was served with the most delicious chocolate truffles
S. L.
Busy, not much left on the menu at 6pm on a Friday but pleasant and friendly atmosphere 😊
J. R.
Really excellent food and friendly, efficient service, location by the river pleasant. Pricy but worth it.
W. J.
This is a delightful place for either a drink on the terrace, or a quality meal in the restaurant.
S. P.
We visited York for our 10th wedding anniversary and this was our restaurant of choice.
We sat out on the riverside terrace drinking cocktails, enjoying the sun before our food. We had oysters to start, which were as fresh as I've had. I had the duck for main course while wife had the burger. Both dishes were incredible!
What an amazing restaurant! We'll come again next time we visit York.
I. P.
Excellent service and excellent food. Well recommended
E. H.
Fantastic service, the food was enjoyed by all, but I do wish I could have indulged in a vegan dessert (Sorbet is not appetising or a treat) GF hubby had loads of great choices and the kids menu was fab. Great atmosphere too.
J. A. P.
I am a retired farmer , the Best lamb I have ever eaten, wonderful, great meal thanks. to Mat & B.
Z. F.
Really pleased we chose here for our roast dinner today. The food was excellent, my only criticism would be the roasties were a tad salty for my liking, other than that it was bang on and the service was faultless. We sat outside which was lovely overlooking the river, the inside looked equally as nice. Will definitely go back when in York again.
D.
Second time we've eaten here. While the food again was lovely, the service was slow, we waited a long time for our cutlery and wine after the starters arrived. Our waiter seemed a little inexperienced and had little knowledge of the food and wine. Atmosphere was great
V. B.
Lovely modern restaurant in a super setting by the river. Great food from a good menu and swift helpful service.
A tad on the expensive side, but worth the extra for the placement and the cuisine.
Highly recommended.
D. J. V.
Portion size of the fish and chips were huge, the staff were very friendly as well, we went over the first weekend of July and were lucky to pre book. Although the outside has cover, all the seats and tables were wet.
I wouldn't get the fish and chips again, I would get another meal that requires more than deep frying as it was an average meal.
However other meals coming out looked fantastic.
M. M.
Lovely setting. Super warm place on a cold day. Staff very helpful. Food delightful only disappointment pear sponge dry needed custard or pouring cream.
W. G.
We've been to York several times, and this is the first time we've been to The Star Inn, its tucked away off the road, but what a lovely find. We only stopped for drinks and nibbles (biggest tastiest olives I've eaten!!) We had a nice comfortable seat outside overlooking the river. We'll definitely stop here again when we visit York.
M. D.
Called in for a morning coffee on way from station on a day trip to York. Found a table overlooking the river. Staff were friendly and cheerful. Indoor dining areas looked attractive. Would like to return for a meal next time l am here.
O. T.
Fantastic lunch with friends for a birthday. Lovely atmosphere and good service
D. W.
Had a lovely meal 12/04. Service was excellent, food and wine were spot on. Not the biggest portions but the quality more than makes up for it. Had the pork belly with lobster and caper croquettes and my partner had the cod loin, both lovely. Couldn't fault the service or the quality
S. X.
Great location, but busy and expensive. Booking ahead recommended.
J. P.
Lovely riverside pub with great food and friendly service in a beautiful city 👌🏻
R. T.
Stopped for a quick drink on the shaded terrace during a very hot day.
May be the drink quenching a fierce thirst but it was great to sit out overlooking the river and drinking a chilled glass.
Either way the service was excellent and friendly. I would highly recommend you visit on your trip to York.
N. C.
Nice staff, good food and cocktails, good scenery
M. J.
We enjoy going to the supper clubs when they are on, excellent seasonal food.
A. D.
Lovely restaurant. Very cosy inside. Would love to go back in the summer to sit out by the river. Food and drinks all delicious. Good service too.
J. L.
We had a great lunch at The Star Inn The City. Darrell was very helpful & efficient when booking and when we arrived. Our waitress Kayleigh was kind and friendly. The food was lovely. We enjoyed ourselves.
S. P. N.
What a fantastic place to have a grand meal!
We had the pork chops and the surf and turf. Luckily my husband and me were able to swap around the sides since we both liked some things from our plates and somethings from the other plate.
The parmesan fries that came along with the mains just had some sprinkled on top rather than coating the whole batch in it.
Maybe I'm too picky, but we really really look forward to things when they say so in the menu. Maybe just call it fries?
Lovely overall food and staff though, will go here again if we in the city! Which we plan to soon!
M. P.
Lovely pop up bar on the riverside
C. S.
Called in yesterday, hadn't booked but no problem they found us a table at side of the Terrace. We had 3 starters to share and a lovely bottle of Rose wine. The food, wine and staff were all excellent and
cannot recommend enough.
S. S.
Nice place for a first date, very cosy, and we hadn't precooked, and were seated within 5 minutes.
Staff were 5/5, very attentive and there when needed, but discreet when not.
My only negative which is why I couldn't give 5/5 was when I asked about "virgin cocktails" I was told that they didn't have a menu, maybe it would be appropriate to at least a few show non alcoholic versions on the "drinks menu" not everyone wants alcohol.
A lovely evening by the river, and maybe a 2nd date to be had, who knows!
D. M.
Fine dining , wonderful view on the terrace. Perfect for a spring evening.
K. D.
Great place, great position overlooking the river, great food, and wine. Perfect for that special occasion BUT they need to improve their reception of you when arriving for a booking. Standing around waiting for someone to appear on reception is not what you want!
T. S.
Great restaurant, great food. Lovely staff. We were not hurried to eat our meal. Lovely view of the park. Please go, it's well worth it
t. j.
Must be paying staff a fortune in this covid era to keep them because brilliant service. Great food. Great location. A breath of fresh air for such a busy city. Dont mind paying when its that good
J. N.
So much potential. Great location, nice comfy restaurant and amazing staff. Food was unfortunately a bit if a miss. Lacking in seasoning and too many things refrigerate to the point the food taste was compromised. Pity as we really wanted to like this
A. G. S.
Great setting with lovely service. Food ok too!
J. S.
Just had drinks here very nice. Great service.
R. H.
Very nice location and food, cosy warm modern interior seating, sunny exterior terrace overlooking the river. Great menu, with wine recommendation against each dish. The food is high quality, tasty, presented attractively. Good service and availability of tables. We visited at Xmas, nice Xmas tree and fireplace too.
J. C.
Very pleasant meal in peaceful surrounding watching the Ouse flow by.
D. S.
My favourite place in York. Amazing service, super good quality of food and the best view of the river :) I had my birthday lunch there this year and everyone was lovely, Ellen in particular helped me so much to book a table and they gave us the best one at the front row so I can enjoy the view :)
5. O. S.
Nine of us, all work colleagues, safely spread across two outdoor tables with stunning views onto the river spent a very happy 4-hours at the Star Inn this afternoon with great food and drinks. Katy who looked after us from start to finish was simply awesome. Ever attentive, memorising names in our group, adjusting things for the rain that started (we all stayed dry & warm) and just generally looking after us with warmth and fun was brilliant. Thank you Katy and The Star Inn.
P. S.
One of the best. Cannot heap enough praise on this restaurant.
Food - Perfect
Service - Perfect
Ambiance - Perfect
Glad we booked and pick one of the best restaurants in York to celebrate.
Worth booking ASAP.
I. D.
Had a really good meal. Both had Whitby cod, with sauces, samphire, cockles. The chocolate moose dessert was excellent. Service was excellent. Great experience. At the moment, very busy, so need to book.
T. 4.
July 19 “freedom day” and we have already had a couple of disappointing and rude encounters elsewhere in York over masks. However the attitude of the staff here, their friendliness and the service is exemplary. An object lesson on how to deal with the lifting of COVID restrictions. Good food too. Well done.
B. R.
Absolutely brilliant place. Was here on my work Christmas Party last week. The food was incredible and we were looked after like royalty.
J. W.
I give this a 3 because I judge this against other Michelin star restaurants. On its own merits it would perhaps be a 3.5. As a Michelin star I would have expected the staff to be a little more attentive, to pour our wine rather than leave it in a bucket, and other smaller details which take a restaurant to that next level. Mostly, the food, although nice, was not in my view to a level that would achieve Michelin star. With a Michelin star as a tag, a restaurant has much to live up to and sadly this was just slightly off the mark.
L. V. H.
Lovely ambience in an historic building overlooking the river. Very warm and inviting dining areas as well as lounge rooms with fireplaces. The menu has a variety of fresh local fare, well prepared and presented. Service was excellent and friendly. In warmer weather, the outside seating area offers an wonderfully relaxed waterside experience.
D. S.
We had a fantastic dinner. Food and wine delicious. Best of all was the service from our waiter George. Highly recommend.
J. L.
I really enjoyed the evening here. Relatively expensive but worth it in my opinion.
E. D.
A special birthday lunch for our Mum. We had a delightful time. The food was very good indeed. We were not rushed through our meal courses. Plenty of time to relax and enjoy. Our waitress was exceptionally good. Very well trained, very knowledgeable and very friendly. Made Mum feel very special. It was a very busy Saturday lunchtime. There was a nice ambience. It is very pricy though, so we will be keeping it for special occasions. Having said that, we did push the boat out a bit 😁
N. S.
Very helpful staff going the extra mile, serving fantastic breakfasts (we enjoyed it so much we went two days running)
H. F.
We had been looking forward to our first visit here and the ambience when we went in was good.
The food though was the disappointment. The portion size for a smoked salmon starter was outrageously disproportionate to its cost and the lamb main course was tough.
On the plus side , the halibut was extremely well cooked, though again expensive for its portion - and I am not a huge portion!
We've been once and won't rush back. Over priced for what it was.
S. T.
Lovely, very smart restaurant. Certainly more than a pub. Lovely place to visit for a meal out. Would recommend especially on a sunny day so you can go out on the veranda.
T. C.
Fabulous location, relaxed atmosphere, superb food and attentive staff. I highly recommend the suggested drinks with each course. Well worth the money!
D. C.
Location, vibe and staff, that's a good start. This time was to experience the aforementioned with a couple of pints of the excellent Pilsner Urquel from the Tank. Have enjoyed a great evening here previously when staying in York and will be back for more.
j.
Absolutely fine dining. Food was delicious and staff were very attentive and helpful with food in and wine choices. definitely recommend
S. C.
We nipped in for lunch and had 4 starters to share, they were amazing as was the service, very busy and a nice atmosphere..
K. A.
Great service in theae strange covid-19 times. Excellence food and portion size.
R. M.
Lovely atmosphere, very clean and friendly staff.
The food choice was good and had something for everyone's taste. There was a selection of nibbles, snacks and mains. I opted for tandoori Foley which I didn't regret, my husband had the burger which wasn't greasy. The deserts were tasty also, having the rhubarb cheesecake and pàve.
This is somewhere we would visit again.
C. S.
Needs no words... Best breakfast in York. The coffee needs some work, please please can we have a filter option… the americano is bitter…
f. s.
My husband and I went for a dinner and we had a three course meal. Starter and mains were absolutely delicious. Dessert was not as good as the other two courses. We enjoyed our time and quality service.
J. W.
The service was excellent. The food was to die for bit this was reflected in the prices.
A. N.
mid week lunch excellent food , excellent service ,as always.Felt comfortable not over crowded ,there is an option to sit outside on the terrace. We have been lucky enough to have dined here on several occasions and have never been disappointed.
d. e.
Lovely location. Food slightly disappointing and very overpriced for what it is. Staff were attentive and pleasant.
J. T.
Really enjoyed our lunch here. Mains are expensive but the specials were reasonably priced and very tasty, especially the black pudding and the bourguignon. I did wonder if the place would be more style than substance but the flavours were really good. Kids' food was excellent quality (though I suspect a lot of kids might be suspicious of the cured ham with blackened edges that came with egg and chips!). Not the usual beige food options for kids so a refreshing change. Our starters and kids' meals came very quickly and while we then had a bit of a wait for adult mains, staff were attentive and service was good.
J. L.
Fabulous food in very stylish surroundings with attentive staff.
S. J.
The star inn has been one of the most friendly and welcoming places I have ever visited, our waiter Dave has been incredibly helpful and respectful, he has the best customer service skills I have encountered in the whole York. I strongly recommend it and the manager is one of the friendliest. We will definitely return and very soon ☺️
N. W.
Perfect for a business lunch. Just had main courses (Lamb Rump and Dover Sole). Both great dishes but the Lamb flavours were amazing!! I can still taste it now 6 hours later!! Definitely recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
S.
A warm welcome and excellent service.
This place is huge and as it is set on the river would be wonderful in the summer.
Our waitress was really friendly and attentive and the food glorious.
Good value for money and well worth a visit if you are in York, I have already recommended it to fellow hotel guest who also enjoyed a lovely meal.
Thank you
D. P.
Lovely atmosphere. Good service from helpful staff and probably the most important factor knockout food. I can cook a bit, so I love it when I go somewhere where the food is cooked so well I know I couldn't replicate it at home. The tastes buds were going in all sorts of directions. Well worth a visit.
M. F.
Beautiful in every way, little pricier than some, but some don't have the chef that's there vegetarian option it's first class
J. P.
Lovely location, nice staff but awful food for an outrageous price. We went for breakfast and received half a plate of food (one bacon rasher, half a button mushroom, half a slice of fried toast) - spoons has better quality breakfast and that is saying something
T. M.
Nice bar by the side of the river and staff very helpful.
J. C.
Friendly staff. Lovely restaurant. Food ok but my pasta was under cooked, in fact still raw. I know it's been tough for restaurants through Covid but please get it right. We've missed good restaurants!!
J. L.
Great location!
D. B.
Went for a Christmas meal with friends, and pre booked our choices. Staff and service were excellent along with the food, both taste and quality.
H. M.
The terrace is great on a sunny day, good selection of draught beers and excellent coffee.
B. B.
Fantastic place to eat ,excellent service from Harry. It is a bit pricey but worth it. Nice environment, strict covid procedures. Recommended. We went for anniversary treat and was looked after.
B. D.
Great food and drink, lovely atmosphere. Great place to sit out at in the summer
B. J.
Treated to breakfast by my daughter. Good value, good portion size. Waitress was lovely. Helpful and efficient. Covid precautions all in place so felt safe there.
D. S.
Pilsner Urguel unpasturised tank beer is a winner! Fresh and delicious and will be back. Not eaten here yet so hence the 4 stars
H. A.
Amazing food, service and a very relaxed atmosphere. My husband and I were seen to very quickly and we highly recommend the catch of the day 🎣
It was heavenly!
J. D.
Wow! A great example of fine local ingredients presented so beautiful and tasty. Not to be missed if your in York!!
M. C.
Efficient and friendly service. Good but not great food. Presentation 9 out of 10 but only 6 for taste. Had 3 courses and still wasn't full (generally when we go out I can only manage a main course). For the sea bass main and pistachio cake(which was around 1cm depth and topped with a few garnishes so not a cake) suggest chefs put less flavours on the plate and concentrate on improving the taste of those remaining.
J. F.
Excellent food. Extremely well-balanced flavours. Good service & there is level access entry, however, reaching the restaurant is via a quite dodgy sloped pavement, which will draw negative camber toward the kerb in a wheelchair - even when powered, so be prepared & take caution. There may be another way to it further along the river, but we’ve yet to attempt it. But overall it’s well worth the effort if you appreciate amazing food!
S. S.
Great location, nice place with nice staff. Subpar overpriced pub food. I've worked in kitchens across the world and had high hopes for this place. Shouldn't leave a restaurant feeling annoyed and out of pocket. Disappointed.
W. W.
Only had a drink outside but beautiful setting by the river
A. L.
Great atmosphere, shame the kitchen was out of action. The Yorkshire TeaPee was brilliant 😁
K. L.
Great location by Lendal Bridge overlooking the River Ouse at the entrance to York City. Only called in for coffees while waiting for a boat trip but menu looked great.
G. H.
Had the Yorkshire breakfast and found it to be underwhelming. The service was good, and the experience, in spite of new health measures, was pleasant. But cool hot drinks, over done eggs, under done sausage and only half a mushroom took the shine off.
A. B.
Amazing food! Great service! Really lovely restaurant!
A. C.
Beautiful food, staff were fantastic and restaurant perfect. Highly recommend.
B. B.
What an absolutely lovely place. Always come here when staying in York.
Breakfast is brilliant, but the staff are absolutely amazing! So helpful and patient!
B. H.
A perfect meal. My wife's birthday so made her day. I thoroughly recommend the place and we certainly will go again. Thanks Star Inn. B.
J.
Very nice restaurant. Attentive and friendly staff. Good menu choices including several vegetarian options and locally sourced fish. The prices were reasonable and good value. The restaurant has private dining areas that I assume need booking. Highly recommended.
D. P.
Great walks, long and short, amazing views. Will revisit again
K.
The best food i’ve ever tasted in my 21 years of life, food comes in the perfect amount of time and the waiters are exceptional. Although price expensive worth it
A. E.
The whole experience was five star, the welcome, our waitress was so professional, and to top it all, the food was amazing, we can't wait to return.
J. H.
Lovely surroundings, river inside and park the other the park.
Lovely starter, duck hash was excellent and a nice size. Egg was perfectly cooked white and nice runny yolk. Chutney was perfect.
For mains I had road in hole with a side of cauliflower cheese. Both were great and went down a treat.
No room for a desert. Great restaurant, second visit and as good as remembered. Always worth a visit if in York
K. P.
Had a lovely evening here.
Food was cooked to a high standard with a lovely taste
Staff were great and very attentive
A brilliant night
R. B.
Birthday meal out courtesy of my wife. Were able to enjoy a drink in the bar before heading to our table. Had 3 courses and all 6 dishes were fabulous. Well looked after by the staff too.
S. A.
The ambience was brilliant, cosy but chic. Great vegetarian dish. Justina and her colleagues put a lot of thought and paid every attention to detail tonight which made our evening wonderful. Highly recommend for a special evening
M. S.
Fantastic food and great staff, very friendly and professional
N. H.
Working hard to stay open and provide some fun. Food not special, more like posh pub grub, but for the great outdoor setting acceptable. Staff work hard. Would and do return often.
J. M. F.
Delicious food on the Terrace in a Pandemic! No better place over looking the river. Great wine lovely staff! What more can we ask? Thanks
S. K.
We had Sunday lunch at The Star recently, lovely restaurant, amazing food and staff very professional, friendly and accommodating, would certainly recommend
Also noticed that well behaved dogs were welcome😊
B. M.
Great location and the servers are friendly but it was very slow, drinks came after the food and a brioche bun doesn't work as a breakfast bap!!
V. T.
Accessed by a steep deeply cobbled slip road to the side of the Museum Gardens, we opted to park at the bottom of the slope by the alley leading to the restaurant. ( Double yellow lines) This made it possible to negotiate with a wheelchair. The restaurant can be accessed by a long ramp, and although long and narrow, the staff were very helpful with getting the wheelchair past tables.
The food is quite rich. The staff lovely.
Ambience friendly and relaxed.
B. B.
We booked a table here well ahead of the night to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary. We had a very warm welcome and had excellent service throughout the evening. The food took some choosing as the menu was extensive. We chose the lamb as mains which was delicious. All courses were beautifully presented and to make it even more special we were presented with a platter of macaroons and cake with good wishes for our anniversary. It was a very special meal. Thanks to all at The Star Inn The City.
i. s.
Bit pricey but it is in a good location on the river bank
C. H.
Great location in the centre of York, nice outdoor area for when it's sunny. Food and drink, though on the slightly expensive side, was generally excellent. Was recommended the prawn cocktail starter by a friend and she was right in her commendation, excellent. Great drinks selection. Only disappointment was I found my steak a bit flabby.
A. C.
Nice breakfast in a wonderful location with nice staff.5 stars
R. H.
A truly great dining experience - food is incredible, no processed nonsense here and the chef puts together excellent seasonal menus using Yorkshire produce wherever possible. The waiting staff are first rate and nothing is too much trouble. Never had a bad experience here and don't expect I ever will.
E. H.
Lovely food but bit expensive
G. S.
Fantastic family Birthday meal. Many thanks especially to Sophie who helped organise the surprise, Ben the waiter for being so helpful and the kitchen staff for a surprise Birthday cake board. You made it a very happy and memorable event. Thank you all so much.
C. S.
Had works Christmas lunch there. Was mostly quite nice but could've been really nice had the food been tasted before it came out. The small cubes of potato with the main were very hard indeed. The brandy sauce for the Christmas pudding lacked brandy and the ice cream that was sat on top didn't really work. Got to mention the service though - Peter was really good and attentive.
M. M.
Awesome meal..hats off to the chef. Food was the best we have tasted. Well worth the money.
H. W.
Nice staff good for occasion. Busy .ltd choice for veggies
B. V.
Lovely pub by the river in York. Outside seating is only reserved for drinks. There is a private function room upstairs for parties etc. Food is nice although I accidentally ordered a vegan option which turned out to be really tasty (celery steak). The staff is very friendly as I was alone and they would stop by to have a quick chat and see how I was doing.
J. H.
Lovely lunch on sunny day...great to eat outside
A. K.
We went for a coffee and a break. It is very very nice.
T. L.
The service wasn't fantastic and the food was mediocre, was left waiting for cutlery when the food was already served. Portions on the small side. Fake Michelin sign on the outside set hight expectations but came away unimpressed. The setting by the river was lovely. Would recommend more for drinks than food.
A. P.
This place is amazing. We went for an evening meal and the atmosphere was lovely and homely. The food came quickly and was to die for. Seriously, it was mouth watering. The portions were a good size- we didn't have room for desert! The wait staff are really friendly and they know all about the wide range of drinks the resturant has. I would definitely come here again when i'm next in York
S.
Our fave is the full Yorkshire breakfast, complete with all the trimmings for £12. Very nice decor inside, but head out to the terrace overlooking the river if weather permits. It can get very busing afternoon & evenings, but breakfast time in the morning is fairly quiet.
We live a 5 minute walk away, so dine here regularly & is our go-to place with visitors.
D. K.
Top food, excellent atmosphere and surroundings, and friendly, attentive staff. Thoroughly recommendable!
G. S.
Amazing service and amazing food. All the staff were very friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend.
E. M.
Absolutely fab. Food delicious. Comparable to my favourite Michelin Star restaurant. Highly recommended.
C. O.
Such a great dining experience! Beautiful location, great food, and all the necessary safety adjustments for COVID. The best part was our amazing server Harry. He did a fantastic job!!
S. F.
Large yet somehow cozy. Indoor and outdoor seating a fine pub and craft brewery copper pipes.
A. H.
Really good wine advice made for a very happy meal and our daughter loved the surprise mocktail! Good food. Big portions. Nice setting
E. H.
Spot on. Great service, lovely location and setting, and delicious food. Can't fault it.
P. S.
Fantastic food, lovely service and amazing views sitting next to the river. Great little place to have a me and would highly recommend it here.

Nice place in a beautiful setting. Ordered bits from the breakfast menu. Scrambled eggs nicely done. The bacon and the toast were very very hard. I would not recommend this place to anybody who is not in possession of their own teeth.

Beautiful surroundings, great food and staff especially young man called Dave who was very attentive and friendly. Sirloin steak cooked to perfection.

Slow service, 15 minutes from order to delivery of drinks, not many inside. not sure if there was a beer garden out the back busy, but the waiter said the bartender was a bit behind.

We came back after last year easter, unfortunately the duck was no longer in the menu. Food was good but not excellent. However the overall experience was really pleasant thanks to the very professional, patient and friendly service we received despite our numerous requests (10 people + 2 babies). We were all really surprised when the waitress told us she started only one week ago.

What a delightful restaurant. I have eaten here several times and on each occasion the food, presentation and waiting on staff have been just perfect. The pretty riverside setting and ambiance is also a real treat.
Matt Hunter, the Head Chef, should be very proud of his team. I can't wait to have the excuse to go back again and would highly recommend.

Only had a drink can't comment on the food, but what came out of the kitchen looked very nice especially the burgers.

C’est très bien! A superb feast for the senses, order the fried partridge for starters - you won’t be disappointed.

Lovely location, excellent service and really good food.
Started with whitebait, cooked very well, lovely batter. Perhaps a tiny bit more seasoning? Duck for the main, beautifully cooked, but also had to season. Lemon meringue to finish... lovely

Great chill out place, we were lucky with the weather on Sun 9th May 2021, the young lady who looked after us at 5pm till 7pm was great, bubby, funny and recommended fab Rioja Blanco....we forgot to ask her name as having such a good time, sorry, however she gave a cool shortcut to the train station as well. Thanks for being very attentive you are an asset to the business. 👍😄

Beautiful building with nice surroundings. Staff very attentive and ready to help.
Food excellent with a good choice.
Expensive but you get what you pay for.

Great welcome, menu, service, atmosphere.
Only downside was the constant use of the accessible loo in my eyeline by restaurant team often emerging phone in hand.

Beautiful place. Food is odd. The Caesar salad is actually a salmon salad. The burger was loaded with herbs. The Yorkshire Pudding appetizer was 3 huge ones - no one could eat them all. The cottage pie was good but not the best. The prices were on the high side but the location in the museum park on the river probably justifies them.

Been a few times after a recommendation from friends. Close to the centre of York and beautifully situated by the river. You are greeted by friendly staff and the environment is cosy and relaxed with a lovely area to sit and have a drink. Thought has been given to the table layout in the sense I couldn't see if there was a table that no one wants to sit at. Staff are very attentive and know the menu well so if you're unsure of anything they will advise and nothings too much bother. If you want the lights dimming a wee bit then the lights are dimmed....a wee bit. The menu is not extensive but what there is is quality at a not too expensive price. We leave always knowing we'll be back. Oh and they'll be happy to accommodate any requests within reason if you're celebrating anything.

A good establishment with attentive staff and lovely food. My venison stew had a rich sauce and tender meat. Their menu selection was good, decor and atmosphere were both pleasant. There was room for improvement as the cheese board didn't give the customer choice (being picked by staff) and the 'Ceps in the City' starter was overpowering with the garlic. These are minor troubles though and they pale in comparison to the Star Inn the City positive points.

Called in for a coffee this morning ,when given the menu decided that a breakfast to start the day was in order ,only to be told kitchen was busy cooking breakfast that we couldn't order ours , basically a cafe that doesn't have time to cook 😂😂😂

Great menu, excellent service.

Lovely spot on the river for drinks and food
M. S.
Fantastic food, fantastic staff, fantastic setting. Thank you

Fantastic food. Outstanding service from a chap in his first night who was brilliant
Thanks for a great experience 👍
M. B.
Fantastic meal amazing attentive staff, would definitely go again

Fab setting, great food, great presentation, for half your London price. Went for their 'market menu' which was just £22, and each course was spot on. Wines by glass are very reasonably priced. Had fantastic time.
A. S.
Excellent food service and setting
D. B.
Great relaxing breakfast before heading into the chaos of Xmas shopping!😊
G. S.
Great atmosphere, beautiful bar area, outside seating overlooking the river, and a number of well-appointed restaurant areas. Staff always friendly and helpful. Food well-prepared, but could have a few more veggie / fishy options - it's quite meaty.
M. L.
Friendly and a lovely calm atmosphere. Food was delicious!
L. M.
Great food lovely ambiance and position next to the river and museum gardens, but some of the waiting staff need to be taught how to speak to customers and not be so rude and condescending.
M. M.
Great location , cracking Brunch to set us up for the day before heading into town for Christmas shopping , attentive and professional team. Thanks

The place is very nice and the service is extremely good (despite lacking of several gin choices - due to Covid limitations, perhaps?).
The food was good, but we were expecting a little more.

Food and service were excellent. The reasons for not giving 5 stars were the vegetables were a little late to follow the main course and I found the table settings a bit too close to other diners. Not really necessary on a quiet mid week evening.

Beautiful building and location. Had champagne by the river in the sunshine after a busy day in York. Service can be a little slow sometimes if you are in a rush.
C. B.
The food was amazing. A really good choice of dishes and very well prepared and presented. We loved it. The service was friendly and the Inn had a great atmosphere.
G. J.
Imaginative dishes, well cooked and presented

Perfect lunch

The food was okay. Nothing spectacular. Staff didn't really make any effort and certainly didn't seem to think it was a problem that only 3 meals had come out for 4 people. On a plus side, it's a really comfortable, clean and well designed pub that allows dogs in.
A. J.
Very nice burgers! Enjoyed a pint of York cider. Good mix of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff were very helpful.
T. J.
Amazing location and atmosphere very chilled. Food very good quality, service seemed a little unorganised but only a minor point.
R. A.
What a great place to sit and have a beer in the sun with ya mates. Plenty of drinks to choose from, place was packed with customers eating so looked popular but cang comment on the food as I didn't try anything. Staff were cheerful and polite.
L. B.
Great ambience, service is efficient and friendly and in a great location too. The menu has limited options but you can still find something you like. The food was good but not outstanding. We had a lovely evening here and would go back!
P. S.
Great ambience, food very tasty and surprisingly busy for a Tuesday night.
Felt a little bit rushed between courses though.
J. N.
Excellent place and people.
Staff more than helpful would highly recommend visiting.
Everyone so helpful, food very good.
G.
Fantastic service from the moment we arrived at the door, so nice for a doorman to be so welcoming instead of sending us packing for not having a booking!! All the staff were full of energy and very helpful 🤗🤗
T. C.
Nice venue for a bottle of Prosecco. Unfortunately, it cost £35 which included a mark up of £24 on the internet price; not so impressed with that.
The Police arrived to check the Covid-19 compliance, well done there, shame they didn't check out the rip off rate while they were at it...I won't be back.

Lovely atmosphere and in a lovely out of the way location.food was good and service was also good. Clean and tidy. Paper napkins though!
P. N.
Great food (I recommend the Beef Tartare and the Toast Lamb) and a great atmosphere. There is a kids menu but i’d leave the kids at home if you can as it’s a place to enjoy stress free - Perfect for a date night.
Staff are very friendly.

Lovely relaxed place for drink and food overlooking the river. Brilliant service both times we visited
M. D.
Great food but not much choice.
Good location on the riverbank.

Beautifully decorated, fabulous food and lovely friendly front of house and waiting staff. Will definitely return when visiting York again.

Great food , fantastic atmosphere. Great setting. Excellent staff.

I went to the Star on 3 occasions over Christmas, both with work and family and on each and every occasion it was absolutely fantastic.
The ambiance, the staff and the food met all expectations, I am also there tomorrow with staff for lunch and would recommend this as a great place to eat and drink.
Well done the Star, keep up the good work.
A. C.
Came here for a birthday meal and it was lovely. The staff were friendly, knowledgable and attentive without being intrusive. The star is difficult to describe in respect of its decor.....it has a relaxed feel whilst also feeling upmarket/high end without being intimidating. The food is of an excellent standard and extremely delicious. Both starters, the goats cheese and the crab were Devine. The mains....roast rump of lamb and the catch of the day (hake with clams, samphire and a watercress veloute) erre cooked to perfection and extremely tasty. I was left feeling very happy and satisfied with the experience. Great work at the Star inn 😁

Lovely setting over looking the River Ouse
A. H.
Pleasant atmosphere and great location, however food was disappointing, the pork chop was very dry and bland. Very poor value for money.
B. A.
Excellent service, plus menu was exciting to see. Thourly enjoyed my meal as the lamb was delicious followed by Apple crumble only down side was there could have been another portion of the rhubarb ice cream! Yum.
M. S.
Very nice but the place was very cold which spoilt it for me, I also asked for well done steak but came a little bloody and had to send it back. But other than that will go again.
P. G.
A bit expensive, but a lovely place next to the river. Food looked good and accomodating staff made you feel welcome.
N. S.
We ate there one saturday evening after a recommendation from a friend, and although we enjoyed the food both me and my partner felt that pasta at £18 a bowl was a bit of a liberty, myself i had the fish finger sandwich which consisted of one slice of bread (sandwiches where i come from have two) some deep fried cod goujons a small salad and some chips , which although tasty at 14 pounds felt a little expensive. Plus points of the experience, the pub is in a lovely location adjacent to the river with a large seated area , and the eton mess dessert was absolutely stunning ,we just found it a bit on the expensive side for what it is.

Fantastic food ! Amazing steak, great atmosphere and superb service. If we lived in York we would definitely be visiting here again and again. (My Yorkshire pork with black pudding and apple mash was to die for).
C. R.
I treated my daughter to lunch here. The food was a tad on the expensive side, however you get what you pay for and it was certainly worth every penny, portions great, staff very helpful and friendly and the setting of the restaurant is beautiful, set in Yorks museum gardens it has views across the gardens and river Ouse, with an outstanding outside seating area. I would happily recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a fine dining experience.

Wonderful Sunday lunch overlooking the river

Food very good so was the drinks

Sooo tasty. Best steak I've had in a long time, and that's coming from the grandson of a butcher and son of a chef!
B. S.
Amazing food, great service and a stunning location.probably the best dessert I've ever tasted.
R. T.
Staff were brilliant and they have Pilsner Urquel on tap which was almost as good as from Prague itself
Z. B.
Gorgeous atmosphere, tasteful decor and incredible food. Staff are always there for your needs.

Great location, good selection of drinks and food. Lovely and cosy for Christmas and staff really friendly. Had the Sunday lunch and was delicious!! Highly recommend!

Really enjoyed the vegan tempura and miso soup.
C. M.
Good for a drink on the terrace if the sun is shining but I have tried the restaurant three times and have never been impressed. The execution of the dishes isn’t fantastic and there always seems to be an unnecessary extra ingredient on the plate.
