I am giving a 3 star because of the service, without the exceptionally good service levels we received. It was cert friendly and our waiter was very attentive. If i was scoring on the food alone, I’m afraid the score wouldn’t be as good. Firstly i was disappointed with the narrow choice on the menu, amd the food we had was, well… not as good as We were expecting. Quite disappointing actually. If some one asks me how was it, i would say ask me if we will go there again? We won’t. I appreciate running a business and especially a food business must be a real hard challenge, amd satisfying everyone will be almost impossible. Most people who have left reviews seem to have had very positive experiences. I’m sorry guys, but ours wasn’t. One other thing, i really don’t like 12.5% service charges added to the bill. I know u can ask for it to removed. But come on. We’re British.

We had booked a dog friendly area here. Worth booking as it seemed very busy. Staff were fantastic, food was lovely. I had a steak & it was so good. Highly recommend eating here. Lovely wine also. Would definitely go back. Great 80's music and a few themed bits behind the bar.

Absolutely delicious! Staff were fantastically friendly, courteous, and helpful with welcoming smiles despite what I am sure is a tiring job. Food wise, the steak (I had a ribeye) was excellent, and my starter (beef carpacio) was especially delicious! Would definitely recommend!

We had a really outstanding meal here. Ribeye and vegetarian steaks were both delicious as were the onion rings. Service was prompt, professional and friendly. Lovely atmosphere and decor. We appreciated the adult only environment and also that we could bring our dog and we were seated in an area with plenty of space for him (I think you do need to reserve a table in advance to guarantee this though). Some have commented on the price, our bill was under £80 for very good quality mains and sides, a beer and wine and including the 12.5% service charge which they confirmed is passed to staff. We felt this was good value for the quality of food, drink and service received.

Amazing Sunday roast and great vegetarian options.And the fried gherkins! The staff is very helpful and polite. A lovely place for a celebration meal or a date (or to be honest just when craving for some heartwarming delicious food)! Recommend booking at least 2-3 days in advance for Sunday roast, it gets busy. Great cocktails!

Couldn't fault this place with regards to the food and service. Wasn't best pleased that a tip of over £10 had been added to my bill without having been asked. I am happy to tip good service but I like to be the one tipping, not having it assumed by the establishment.

Exactly ‘ok’ They were really dog accommodating and we didn’t have to ask for water for the dog. Service was prompt and we didn’t have to ask for refills although at times the service was intense and very scripted - asked on 3 occasions what our plans were for the night. The starter was excellent and I ordered the monkfish as the main which looked small but was so rich and filling. My partner ordered the ribeye steak and it looked like something from an Iceland advert. The steak itself was unseasoned and extremely chewy (it had to be put back on the plate) and the chips were so overdone I’ve tasted better at a Scarborough chippy. They just tasted extremely earthy too. The cost was around £85 which included a 12.5% tip but we both left wishing we would have paid £20 more and gone somewhere like Skosh. Just a bit underwhelming.

We came to stay for one night at the churchill hotel and asked reception if they knew anywhere nice to eat they suggested the whippet inn. Omg it was amazing. The staff are lovely and very attentive. The food was amazing and the beer and cask ales were fab. Would definitely recommend this place. 👍

Very friendly staff nice decor. The food is nice maybe a bit pricey, the Desserts are very nice. I have two niggles the staff seem to be on a hard sell we were asked 3 times if we wanted water, and even after getting our drinks we were asked 3 times if we were having red wine, the last attempt was if you don't want red wine I will take the glasses away. The other is the 12.5% service charge is automatically added which you can have removed the staff are polite but quite vocal asking if you want it removed, feels like a bit of a guilt trip. It is a nice place with decent food but there are plenty of other places doing better without the hard sell.

Hidden Gem!! From the outside you wouldn't think it was much, but never judge a book by it's cover!!! Inside is absolutely gorgeous, the food is stunning and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. So much so, we've booked again for the following day for their Sunday Lunch. It's a bit of the beaten path, but 100% worth it. Posh nosh, £££s. Adults venue, not really one for the kiddies in my opinion.

Had a few nights in York and read about everyone's incredible "steak experience" at the restaurant. Being a bit of a food snob (nope I don't eat my steak blue), I had to give it a try myself. We booked online with ease and managed to get a table. Once we arrived we were sat down by Joe our waiter who was excellent. The service in the restaurant was remarkable though may be a tad slow, but that was probably to get you to enjoy your drinks and talk to whoever you're with instead of staring at your phone. Our chateaubriand arrived and just like all the other reviews... I must say this is probably the best steak I have ever had. Dry aged and cooked to perfection it melted like butter in your mouth. The sides it came with were equally delicious, and the portion was generous. Even though we were full, we couldn't resist dessert, which was also decadent. I would wholeheartedly recommend The Whippet Inn to anyone in York.

It did not appear it from the outside but this place is a serious meat lovers heaven and I was not disappointed. I brought my girlfriend here for a special celebratory meal and it was a lovely experience. We were promptly seated at a table which, despite being outside, was warm and cosy. The wine was reasonably priced for a steak restaurant. My girlfriend convinced me to get the chateaubriand sharing board, which came cooked perfectly and the accompaniments were excellent. The staff were friendly and let us stay as long as we liked to finish our wine and desserts. Overall a great evening and couldn't find fault with any aspect of it.

Visited on a Sunday and was dissapointed with the limited menu, I don't think it was clear when we booked it was a choice between roast beef a chicken dish but no veggie choice. Plenty of beef but they had mucked about with the veg. A very sweet slither (basically half a carrot sliced lenghtways) of carrot, 3 small roasts and a bizarre tasting green veg.

Service and food utterly brilliant. Discovered a new Venetian wine which was lovely too. Treacle cured Fillet steak, utterly gorgeous. Not cheap but we benefitted from their midweek discounts. If you don't have that then expect at least £30 to £50 per head if you're drinking too. We got just short of £35 per head with discounts for 6 fantastic mains, 5 desserts, aplenty of wine and some beers. Would happily go again and pay full price. Credit to the serving staff who were well informed about everything they were serving, instantly available and above all totally natural and charming.

I was on a business trip with a colleague and was recommended to the Whippet Inn. We were told we would be lucky to get a seat but walked straight in and was seated immediately. The young guy at the bar had excellent knowledge of the local beers and helped us in our choice depending on what we ordered from the menu. The food when it arrived was superb and beautifully cooked and we both left very clean plates. All in all a place I find I cannot reccomend highly enough. A real gem that everyone should try.

Came with a group of friends. I dont eat red meat so I knew my menu options were limited. I think I chose badly. I had Hake which was tiny and had to order 2 sides on top to make it to a decent size meal, and lots of squid ink which overpowered the meal. Ended up being as expensive as steak. We were in private dining and the room was cold. The rest of the party had steak and were really happy. Their portion sizes were good. Wine was good. Good selection of Gins and Rum and our server was very friendly and knowledgeable.

The pallet clenser ice course arrived before we had even had our starter, steaks were borderline medium having ordered M/R accompanied with a watery peppercorn sauce. Went today as a trio as read the online reviews and expectations were high. And to be honest....a bit underwhelmed. There was a feeling from the staff of a festive hangover and a can't be bothered approach. Parts of the meal had to be prompted after not arriving and others weren't available due to taking '2 days to prepare' Don't get me wrong, everything was cooked beautifully and you couldn't question the quality, not at all. But the £23 rib eye, whilst cooked well, was an average sized steak, 6 chips and some green fluff. Nothing else, no sauce included, no mushrooms, no onion rings, just that. It looked unfinished and underwhelming for the price, but tasted great. The environment was quiet, which didn't help matters, and the temperature was too low which forced the ladies into a scarf request. We were all up for a 3 course meal and plenty to drink but skipped desert to avoid further damage to the expectations. Tough one to summarise really. Nice food, tiny portions for the money and maybe they have just got a bit over-confident from the good review this far and got too big for their boots. If you want to have long term success in York and want your prices on the higher side, you need to create an experience worthy of the bill, with decent portions to entice the locals back. Otherwise, just hope the tourists find you.

The vegetables were cooked al dente. Drinks aren't cheap, and it's easy to get carried away, so be aware that the bill can get quite high before you realise it. One of the best restaurants in the city, the Whippet is a cosy steak-house two minutes from Ouse Bridge. The staff are excellent and are always friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere is lovely. The wines are particularly good here, and there's a separate bar area if you want drinks but aren't eating (look closely at the wallpaper in there). The food is high quality with some real gems on the menu. The steaks are all superb, especially accompanied by the bone marrow sauce but it's the deep fried pickles on the starters menu that are the star of the show. They are insanely good. Desserts are also good; they do a wonderful deconstructed cheesecake/chocolate option. Overall, I'd highly recommend The Whippet Inn.

A real let down. Shame. We went there on our first night in York. Very busy and they didn't have a table that night so we booked for the next night, full of anticipation as the menu looks great. Unfortunately the reality does not live up to the promise. All six of us were relatively happy with our main meal (we had no starters or deserts) but the sides were the main problem. I sent my chips and garlic mushrooms back because they were so overcooked as to be virtually inedible, the chips especially so. Unfortunately the replacements were little better. Also the blue cheese sauce was a "hollandaise sauce with blue cheese added" according to the manager. I declined an offer of a free desert as I don't eat them. All in all I wish we'd gone somewhere else and saved ourselves the disappointment and quite a few £££s. Shame as it spoiled our night out.

The only negative I have to say about this place (and for many other places in the UK) is that the music they were playing was a little bit loud. Other than that I would not hesitate going back.
