Well you have to do it. Been away from the coast for a while in need of some Yorkshire fish. Great place to visit portions are huge. The price is reasonable. Staff service was great.

As Jim Bowen would have said... "super, smashing, great". Once you have got parked (the car park layout can be challenging if busy, only reason for the drop in star rating), Thompsons is possibly one of the best fish and chip restaurants I've been to. The batter is incredibly light and bubbly, fully encapsulating the fish so it it is perfectly cooked (the Haddock we both had was lovely and white, both firm yet melt in the mouth). Chips are nicely cooked, good portion size. We went around 6pm,it was pretty busy but still some tables available. Service was very quick and friendly, but the fish was hot and crisp, not soggy, so must have only recently come out of the fryer and been drained - not hanging around waiting to be ordered. Been a few times, never disappointed. And will be back again, always recommend to anyone travelling near York

Hand down best chip shop iv been to. Prices seem a bit steep but do not be put off, the amount of food you get for your money is ridiculous! For 3 adults we all ordered sausage, chips and beans and between us there was 6 yes SIX full size sausages and loooads of chips. The two kids got a 'kids meal' each sausage, chips and peas and they could have easily shared one plate. The kids meals also come with a drink and ice cream all for only 7 quid.. They have gluten free and vegan options too, plus loads of other dishes!

Located right on the side of the main road, easy access and parking. Welcoming polite and efficient staff. Good quality cod, chips and peas but the bread and 'butter' not so great when you consider the overall cost.

Visited the store on the way to Whitby and it will always be a stop over destination next time visting York. Excellent customer service from all staff, never tried before this healthy version of fish and chips due to calrories intake consciousness. We swapped our chips with salad. Absolutely bloomin gorgeous, haddock the size of a whale, enough chips to sink a ship, bread and butter! I managed to leave just enough room for a pudding and I just about managed it! We were all so full after eating here and will absolutely go again!!

Best fish and chips in the area by far. Great size portions, with fresh and tasty fish in the best batter around. If you are in the York area then Fish and Chips don't get better than this (trust me, I've had them all). Now with a small seating area inside and plenty of outdoor seating.

Whilst I agree with the other reviews they are good, I just don’t think they are great. Pappa’s in Whitby are fantastic and are far better value. Worth a stop if your in the area and passing. £18 for two fish, chips and peas.

Amazing fish and chips. I had cod and my daughter had haddock and was very fresh. My wife had the hunters chicken which came with chips, salad, homemade coleslaw and a potato rosti. With a few side orders and with 3 proper 500 ml bottles of coke with a glass it came to £51. Worth every penny for nicely cooked fresh food.

We have come here at York for a brief holiday and decided to have fish & chips from this famous place. Trust me you cannot get any better than this. Great Puffy light battered fish with Chips, Mushy peas & a cup of tea. The fish melts in your mouth it was that soft. I recommend this place. They are a Great seating area. Well, the resturant was well controlled and staff were lovely. We we sested and served drinks in a timely manner. Wr ordered our food. Fish and chips (wife) and a mixed platter (for me). Well the batter was light, non greasy and very crispy. The fish was a big fillet (medium was ordered) massive in fact. I had mussels, tampura prawns, fish bites, calamari and a fab salad plus chips. Piping hot and tasted fabulous. I have to say I'm fussy with f&c ad usually get heartburn, not this time. There was losds too. Various sauces available, tea, coffee and b&b. Reasonably prices, great car park too with plenty of spaces. Will definately re-visit. Loved it.

Good service and consistent food.fish and chip now up to £14.95. there's plenty of restaurant in York at that price without travelling the distances to Thomson's The seniors has also gone up £11.75 for the mains. the seniors starter has gone from £2.50 to £4.. They need to make there money back,after pandemic, but prices might not suite everybody with traveling out of York.

Drove past and saw the sign “Famous Fish and Chips” and thought me and the family better give this place a go. Fresh Crispy Chips Amazing batter on the Haddock and Sausage. Tasty curry sauce and a homemade steak and mushroom pie full of meat and not just gravy One minor point, the pie would be better if in a shortcrust pastry base and lid instead of the puff pastry top to a foil tub. Very minor and would heartily recommend.

Excellent Fish & Chips, but has a wide range menu. Restaurant was closed when we visited quite a que at the takeaway but very efficient,organised staff soon had us served. Not been before, went on a day trip with Selby District Vision. There was 33 of us. We had a set menu for Senior Citizens. Choice of Cod or Haddock, Peas or Mushy Peas. The size was more than enough, very light batter and fills you up. Very good service and friendly staff. Very busy with out us, so book in advance if you can. Nice decor, light and airy lots of tables, they also have an overflow and outside seating area as well. Well worth a visit and we will be going again.

Five out of five here for the fish. It is large, tastey and fresh. The flesh of the fish is white and the batter is moist inside and slightly crisp inside. Chips are chip shop chips and not out if a freezer. You get a pot of tea or coffee and it had to be the best fish I have had at this type of venue. If your near then don't miss this one off your list. You can also order plenty of other foods from the varied menu and from the few people I chatted to, it was just as good. It just does not get any better than this !

Another fantastic visit, after cancer treatment my hubby wanted their famous fish pie, it now has sliced potato on which he can't swallow so after a discussion with 2 lovely staff they took off the potato replaced it with cheese and he could enjoy what he's been looking forward to for months. Where do you begin to describe the food here! It's awesome and they do not stint on portions. My partner described his fish as a whale it was large. This is a fantastic Dine in Fish and Chip Restaurant. We visited as a group of 9 on our way home from Scarborough. The fish was incredibly fresh with a golden crispy batter and the chips were also excellent. One of my criticisms of fish and chips restaurants in some cases is that you don’t get as large a portion as you get when you order takeaway, this is NOT the case here, the portions are huge. Other pluses are an attractive bright seating area & proper bottles of vinegar and Heinz ketchup- not annoying satchets. As a separate matter I unfortunately dropped my wallet in the restaurant when we visited, when I called to enquire about it it had been found and the restaurant sent I back to me recorded delivery. A massive thank you for this ( I tried to pay them for the postage but they wouldn’t let me ) We will definitely be going again next time we’re on the A64 !

Called in while passing we had our little dog with us and the restaurant is not dog friendly, so had to sit outside there is a covered area with benches so not too bad unless it's freezing. After a visit to York (where there is a huge choice of places to eat) we often wait to make a stop at Thompsons on our way back to Scarborough. The reason is simple, the food is superb and there is lots of it, as the portions are very big. There is plenty of parking but getting out of the car park into the A64 can be a challenge, especially when turning right. Well worth a visit when you're passing.

Recommended to go by the lovely owner of Cowslip Farm while camping. These are one of the best if not the best Fish and Chips I've had. I couldn't believe how much my two kids ate. Definitely will go again next time we're camping, something else to look forward to.

If anywhere deserves the, Best fish and chips in the world” label, Thompson’s deserves it! My wife and I frequently travel between Ilkley and Filey. Thompson’s fish restaurant is a place (no pun intended, as David Walliams would say) we often stop. Firstly the staff are lovely, whether you’re in the take away or the restaurant. The fish is deliciously white, large and flavoursome; beautifully cooked, without fail. Their chips are “the best”. If you have visiting friends from abroad who have heard of the British favourite meal then take them to Thompson’s! Superb as always. I thoroughly recommend them.

We are regular visitors, but due to the pandemic have obviously not been recently. There was a large queue which was dealt with promptly. The fish, chios and mushy were as usual the best ever. On the spur of the moment we drove to Thompsons for a fish and chip meal having passed it a few times. We decided to sit in the restaurant and so upon entering you wait to be seated. We didn't have a reservation which we realised a little later that it may be a good idea next time. We only waited for a minute and were then shown to a table which was clean and laid out nicely. We ordered a child meal, a regular Haddock and a large Haddock. Meals came in good time. The fish was moist and white with a good crispy batter and chips were chunky. The mushy peas lacked a bit of zing but nevertheless were nice. The staff although busy were always smiling and friendly. There was a never ending stream of customers coming through the door hence we'll book next time I'm glad we visited and will make this a regular event.

Thompson's was recommended to us by staff at Ebor Caravan sales staff. 3 of us called in on our way home. Pleasantly surprised how nicely decorated, warm, cosy and clean the premises was, with a very pleasing atmosphere. We received a warm welcome and shown to our table.... We ordered ~ cod and chips, scampi and chips and seafood platter, it came with bread and butter and all the dips we required. Shocked 😲 is an understatement how big the portions were, the seafood platter came on a plate nearly the size of a manhole cover 😊 but the food was demolished with ease. Perfection on a plate, all of us were extremely happy with our choices, completely tasty and cooked very well. It wasnt a greasy a fish and chip restaurant which we've experienced in other establishments, where the fat when frying travels on all surfaces and creates a greasy film....so 10/10 for cleanliness 🏆Too full to order a pudding but will undoubtedly return to make room for one next time. To mention a take away counter is next to the restaurant. Well worth the travel to visit here again. Thank you for our beautiful meal !

Menu information on Trip advisor needs updating as the prices are 15℅ less than that charged in the restaurant. When I courteously pointed this out to the manager she became very defensive staying that they had nothing to do with Trip Advisor.
