I had learned piano as a child and wanted to pick it up again but as a busy working mum struggled to find time. Joanna has been brilliant, quickly finding the level I was at (having forgotten most of what I had learned 30 years previously!!!) and fortnightly remote lessons have been an excellent way to finally squeeze in some time for me! She is very patient and works to find the best teaching approach for the individual, for example, I work best listening to her play the piece first before attempting it, and offers additional support with audio or video of her playing which helps me enormously with my practice. There is no pressure and yet she offers more challenging pieces if you want them which is so motivating when you can then play something you didn’t think you could. She is always friendly and encouraging and I would recommend her wholeheartedly.

My daughter started piano lessons with Joanna during lockdown and she loves the lessons. Joanna is so enthusiastic and friendly and engaging to children. She pitches the classes at the right level and makes the lessons fun. My daughter always laughs and smiles during the lessons. It is really interesting to see how Joanna starts to teach beginners. I am also learning at the same time. I would highly recommend these classes to anyone who wants to learn to play Piano.

I took lessons from Joanna many years ago, but I still remember her kindness, warmth, and infectious laugh that made every lesson a joy. Her passion and knowledge of music are apparent from the moment you meet her. She also really listened to the student's interests and needs and based her lessons on that. Both our children love learning to play the piano with Joanna! She is very warm person herself and co-operation with her is good (regarding the timetable, missed/postponed lessons etc). We were worried that our 6 year old will not be able to concentrate for an hour, but she makes the lessons entertainig and attractive even for such a young child. Joanna motivates them a lot and encourages to practice at home - thanks to her motivational scheme, they practice twice a day (with a bit encouragment from us). Also children learn from her to be organised and have things planned in advance. Highly recommend.

Joanna is a wonderful and gifted teacher! I was lucky enough to be a pupil of hers for several years, in a classroom setting as well as private lessons. Her passion for music is contagious! I started as a piano student, who hated to practice, but she stuck with me and kept on encouraging. I had the misfortune of breaking my arm during our tenure, but that didn’t stop Joanna - she took me on as a voice student in the interim so my music education could continue. Once my arm healed, it was back to the keys and I remained a student of hers as long as I could, before we parted ways geographically. I loved studying under her; she is kind yet stern when necessary (as all great educators should be). She knows just how to fine-tune lessons so that they are challenging for each student, yet not overwhelming. After a while, I was starting to lose interest so she dug in on the “why” and changed up the styles I was learning, pushed the envelope on our lesson formats and didn’t let me make excuses. I continued studying piano and voice for another decade after Joanna, but she remains my favorite instructor. [Full disclosure, I have not been a student of hers in almost 20 years but her impact and influence are/were so great, I had to share it here in hopes other students will be influenced like I was.]

Very structured lessons and thorough follow up with detailed emails regarding homework and practice. Good online resources to help with remote learning. Joanna Tsiftis Xylas is the best piano teacher. She was my instructor throughout my childhood and not only taught me how to play, but she instilled in me my love for music. I may have fought it sometimes as a kid, but what I learned has stayed with me well into adulthood. I’m grateful she shared her passion with me and always think of her when I play my piano now. Even after years away from playing consistently, I can still read music and fight my way through any piece of music.
