It’s a brilliant class with brilliant people. As a martial artist, it’s great to learn the practical techniques that were applied in genuine sword fights. As a trainee stunt performer, it’s massively useful to know how swords work and how to use them.
If you’re after a hobby with good people or a different martial art to try, this is a good place to go.

This is a great class. You not only learn how to properly hold, cut and fight with a sword, but you are taught real techniques from medieval manuscripts. The classes are taught by an instructor who is not only very encouraging but really knowledgeable about his subject and the history of warfare in general. It was also quite a workout, so I felt like I was doing a lot of exercise as well ad having fun swinging a sword! Excellent class!

Joined in a class taster session with my partner 3 months ago and we haven’t stopped since :)
Inspiring, supportive and attentive instructors helped us get a good start in our learning.
Friendly, inclusive and welcoming students made us feel part of the group straight away.
We walked away in the first day confident that we had learnt and understood what we were taught.
Following classes have built on that first day and we have learnt so much in such a short time.
New students have since joined but are never left feeling they are behind as everything we learn helps build on and expand on what has been learned before without being beyond the reach of a new starter.
No purchase of equipment is requisites as the school supplies top of the range protective gear and training weapons, but you’ll soon want to own your own anyway as it’s an addictive sport once you start.
No pressure is put on anyone who joins, beyond making sure safe practice is followed by all, to improve at a faster rate than you are comfortable with.
Appropriate for young or older alike as pretty much all ability’s and fitness levels are catered for.
Easily accessible and central location just off Newport road without having to get caught up in the one way maze of Cardiff central.
5 mins walk from Queen Street staton if needed.
In short I am thrilled to have found such a good group and made such good friends.
I highly suggest you go along and give it a try.
Update: It has now been a whole year!! We have upped our attendance from one class to two a week. We bought our own kit and swords (not essential as the Academy provides all essential gear). We’ve made lots of amazing friends and found a little family in the Academy. We’ve visited other HEMA groups and attended competitions in other parts of the country. I never imagined we would get so much out of just giving it a go :)
So in short as I said before “I highly suggest you go along and give it a try.”

An amazing school teaching medieval martial arts. I have learnt so much about Italian Longsword + many other medieval weapons. The instructor is incredibly knowledgeable on the subject and is a great teacher who leads by example.
This is a true martial arts school and not a club to just turn up and have a knock around.
Unlike most HEMA groups the Academy of Steel includes group combat as part of the study and does not only focus only on 1 on 1 combat as you would find in other schools/clubs. Fighting as part of a unit is so much more exciting and you really feel the adrenaline rushing through you!
If you are an experienced swordsman who is looking to take their skills to the next level or if you have never picked up a sword before or anywhere inbetween I can highly recommend the Academy of Steel.

Jordan and Melissa guide the class with expertise and grace through the basics and more advanced elements of medieval martial arts. After a taster session I signed up for the full course immediately and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the group. Highly recommend you give it a try.

I joined the Academy shortly after the Welsh Lockdown and I received such a warm welcome - so important after moving to Wales during pandemic not knowing people.
In that time I have learnt so much, met some great people and felt really safe in these worrying times.
Couldn't rate the academy more!

Really enjoyable HEMA school with an excellent instructor; he's very good at tailoring things to what you're practically able to do (i.e. you don't have to be super fit or physically capable).
Although you can use this to train towards tournaments it's not required and you aren't pushed into being competitive - you can absolutely do this just for fun and fitness if that's what you want.

Been doing this as a beginner of 35 years old. Although I am a complete novice to this sport i having been made to feel unwelcome or "in the way" the tutors and more experience student's are always willing to talk you through anything and share their knowledge experience with you.
As well as fun weekly meetings this school comes with a social side that you are welcomed into.
14/10 would rate again.

Brilliants classes. Everyone friendly and encouraging. Whether you want to learn for reenactments or just for fun (like me)
Very informative and no pressure to do things you can't do (like me and push ups)
Excellent way to burn some calories.
Kit is provided if you don't have your own.
Would recommend to everyone!

Started up at the new Caerphilly chapter just a few weeks before lockdown, devastated there are no regular classes but the online support and drills the Marshall provides are spot on, so glad I started this. Such a good bunch which is strange given that we are supposed to hit eachother with swords looking forward to getting back together ⚔️🗡️🤺
