Reviews of Colchester Prep & High School

We visited Colchester High School recently to provide our educational shows and workshops about friendship and respecting others. The school team were incredibly friendly and could not have been more welcoming. The students were thoughtful, respectful, and behaved in a very mature manner throughout the workshops and show. We were very impressed by both the students and teachers, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thank you for having us and for being so welcoming.

Our daughter recently started at CHS in the Upper School. We have found the school very welcoming from the start and we (our whole family) are very impressed with our experience so far. Teachers seem very professional, competent and friendly. Our daughter says "The teachers are great. Their teaching style is fun, enthusiastic; strict, but fair". Facilities are good, although space outside the school is a bit limited. This, however, is compensated for by some excellent PE facilities at a number of nearby locations.
The school goes out of its way to keep parents engaged and informed about the progress of their child. Parents all get a Firefly account and can keep track of all homework assigned and completed in real time. It is also easy to use Firefly to contact the teachers directly. The school makes a lot of effort to keep parents engaged through regular newsletters and updates, as well as school events such as the recent Christmas Fayre and the Carol Service. The PTA was welcoming and they appear very dedicated, passionate and hard-working.
A big plus for us is the small class sizes (less than 20), which allows for more individual interaction between teachers and students. Another feature we really liked was the recent term report card, which used an innovative combination of colours and classifications to provide a solid multi-dimensional snapshot of our daughter's progress in the first term and how she was progressing towards the year-end goals. In general Academic results appear very good, with 70% of last year's GCSEs achieving a Grade 5 or better.
As far as after school clubs and daytime extracurricular activities are concerned, there is a large variety and the teachers put in a lot of effort and time into ensuring that there is literally "something for everyone", for example Math club, Debating, Choir, Performance, Art club, Netball, etc.
Our daughter is very happy. The transition from Primary to High school has been much more seamless than we expected. She made friends quickly, and really looks forward going in to school every day. We are very happy with our choice and look forward to an excellent few High School years ahead.

My daughter recently started at the High School in Reception and I can already see a difference in her- she’s so much more confident in herself and her academic progress has been remarkable.
The staff have been very welcoming and the communication with parents is first class. The children are being given a really well rounded education and my daughter always comes home with lots of positive stories about her friends and the things she has learnt.
I highly recommend this school!

Our son joined CHS at the beginning of Year 6 and it has been the best move we have made for him! He has been given wonderful opportunities to deepen his strengths and nurtured in areas of development. The teachers have been quite magnificent and have given him a safe, happy place to thrive. Such lovely pupils too. Thank you CHS.

Colchester High School recognises and celebrates the brilliance of each individual child. Staff really care about the children and academically they help pupils to grow in confidence while challenging them to be the best they can. The site is a typical town centre venue so doesn’t have the spacious surroundings, grounds or parking of some private schools, but look past this and you will find a hidden gem of a school.
My kids love it!

Our only experience of independent education, having been very happy with state in the past. We wanted a secondary school that would celebrate and value the individual in our child. The surroundings were of little interest, we are not aspirational or social climbers who need a fancy setting. Also we were not prepared to submit our 11 year old to a life of commuting to Ipswich. We were looking for dedicated staff and a place for our son to breathe, grow and shine. We found it and feel it was one of our best decisions in parenting. I would not have sent a daughter there, St Mary's would have provided the same for them, but we feel our son's talents and abilities have been noted ,encouraged and realised . As he prepares to leave after 5 years,he is a credit to us and the school.

My son in currently attending and my daughter starts in September. Kate, the admissions co-ordinator is faultless in her job as are the other staff I have met so far. My son is very happy there and his confidence has really improved which means more than any reviews or opinions. I would recommend this school to anyone.

My son has come to Colchester High School for a fair amount of time now, after we decided to take the leap into private schooling. Initially- we loved it. Mr Robertson was a fantastic head, someone to really rave about. But, his successor was less so.
One of the reasons we applied for CHS was because of the pastoral effort in the school, which made our son feel like he could talk to virtually any teacher in the school about any of his queries. Unfortunately, this changed after Mr. R leaving.
About the time of a family issue, the schools pastoral department was dismantled, and changed. This meant that now that Mr. R had left, our son felt uncomfortable to talk to any of the staff. He was let down by one particular Humanties/Pastoral staff member who quite literally forgot about our situation- and therefore the checkups that took place.
In other areas however, we feel CHS excels; the English department is fabulous, with staff that really care about there work. I really must commend Mrs Hoddell, and Mrs Candeler for there work for my son- that is some of the most fantastic teaching I have ever seen. Also, part of the Humanties department excels, with absolutely astonishing teaching in History, RS and geography. Although, not all of the teachers in this department are up to scratch. Again, I must commend Mrs Brindley, Mrs Cullen, and former head, Mrs Croydon.
Sadly, the science department is held up by just one outstanding teacher, Mrs Rose. She is a inspirational teacher who never fails to flow joy into her lessons. The same however cannot be said the same about the other teachers.
Languages staff are also dedicated to there work, and never fail to keep our son motivated, and in love with his work. Mrs Long and Mrs Porter are especially fantastic.
The Art/Tech department is also brilliant, and makes sure that even though resources aren’t always fantastic, work through and stilll excel. I must commend all staff in that department.
Overall, we are mostly happy with CHS, but are sometimes supremely dissatisfied by some of the teaching, and exam results.
