Went to the observatory open day, and I was amazed!!
There is a lot to see and learn, it was a shame we had to leave early as it was cold and raining outside
The views from outside was breathtaking - you can see a lot of Edinburgh from up there. I will definitely go back sometime (maybe during spring or summer so hopefully the weather won't be too bad)
I. S.
Didn’t go into the observatory, but the views of Edinburgh from the short walk to the top of the hill take your breath away .

Really interesting! There are hardback printed copies of every astrophysics journal you could think of in their library. A beautiful old building too. The library is deceptively small, but there are archives below full of science.
P. D.
It is worth seeing if you are into astronomy and telescopes, it is truly a historic beast. Be sure to make reservations beforehand as it is not open to the public without scheduling one.

Brilliant Open Doors visit to the Observatory. All staff super helpful, detailed information of all the work they do and some sun came out to brighten up the day!
J. B.
Fantastic day to visit. Amazing views over Edinburgh.
L. A.
One of the best views of Edinburgh! It has a nice parking space and you can take a good walk while in there.
E. B.
Very interesting evening talk. Would highly recommend.

Doors Open days. Fantastic to be able to look round 😊
A. M.
Nice observatory amd a small hill over there just looks beautiful all day
D. C.
Haven't yet had the pleasure of exploring the inside of the Observatory, but the architecture externally is very impressive. The views from the top of the hill over Edinburgh are stunning, and it's well worth the walk to the top to see them. There are a number of walking trails which begin from the Observatory, taking you through Blackford Hill and the surrounds, you could easily spend a full day exploring the area.

Best views of Edinburgh and beyond

A place to defiantly go if it's open, a good learning opportunity.
The observatory is wonderful, the crowd from the top of buildings is breathtakingly beautiful if you can get past the wind. The visitors centre is accommodating and it's extremely educational. The telescope was simply facnianting and getting a good look at it was awesome.
The only problem is that it isn't open as nearly as it should be and I was lucky enough to get a special tour of all the buildings with an employee, which highlighted many more things like star plates and old souvenirs they used to sell.
T. C.
Good views of the city, great to walk your dog 🐕
T. G.
Great venue for a science meeting!
B. G.
Wonderful place to visit. If you take the bus, prepare for a 'good stretch of the legs' uphill. Beautiful view of Edinburgh. Great astronomical history.
E. B.
Attended during the doors open day and what fun it was! My 7 year old loved it, we can't believe they gave away wee Lego sets to build your own telescope. They had passports for children to collect stickers, facepainting, crafts, posters, demonstrations, talks, tours too much to name! I think we will definitely go next year and allow ourselves more time, it's definitely a all day outing. 5 **** from the Brown family.

This is one of my favorite locations in Edinburg because of the views to take it. There is a network of running or walking trails leading to the hill above the Royal Observatory from the Hermitage area. A plus there is a great area for playing about and walking dogs. There is definitely a dog walking culture which converges on this splendid hilltop!
J. L.
Fascinating historical building with loads of information about astronomy past and present. Generally only open for pre-booked groups but they are part of Eninburgh Open Doors event at the end of September every year. Well worth a trip, and if you're not into telescopes you can just come for the beautiful views from the rooftop!
M. C.
It's not a tourist spot just a working observatory.
If you like Victorian architecture it's worth a visit.
There is parking but don't put your car in the observatory car park, they don't like it.
A. C.
Wonderful learning opportunities over the whole campus during the Edinburgh Open Doors days.
Enthusiastic and well informed staff share practical experiments and experiences for people of all ages to enjoy and be stimulated by
K. D.
If you have even the most fleeting interest in space at all (and I would like to imagine that everyone does), you absolutely have to visit the Royal Observatory.
I visited for the Summer Public Astronomy Evening, and although the weather and time of the year didn't allow for any stargazing of our own, we did get three amazing presentations and plenty of time to look at the old telescope and other equipment, as well as ask questions and take in the spectacular view.
D. S.
Iconic building on the Blackford Hill, Edinburgh. Dates from 1902. Disappointingly no live observations from here although the original towers still exist. Some of the copper cladding has had to be replaced and looks slightly incongruous by comparison with the original . Some lectures take place over the winter. months
C. D.
You can only get inside the observatory if you're part of a group allowed to visit. However, the view from the top of the hill over Edinburgh from here is the best.
C. L.
Brilliant views of the city and a lovely place to learn about space. The hill up there is a bit steep but it's well worth the effort once you reach the top!
P. G.
Excellent Visitor Centre if you pre-booked on one of the arranged events.
Staff are friendly and accommodating with an excellent historic building lending to a 5 star experience.
C. B.
Lovely building from what you can see from outside the fence but can't get in to see it which was really disappointing but the views of Edinburgh are absolutely amazing worth making the journey for the views.
E. C.
Great place to walk dogs and view Edinburgh, Lothians and Fife from a location higher than the castle and Arthur's seat. The Observatory for night time sky views has to be booked in advance.
S. D.
Very interesting and fun day out with the kids. Learned about telescopes and how they work....even got to see the sun through one!! Made sun dials and learned about meteroites and lots more.
A. P.
Beautiful place for a walk with stunning views across the city but except for special events it is not possible to enter the Observatory or adjacent buildings themselves.
S. M.
When looking through the telescope consider the heavenly fingers which created the moon and stars. How excellent is our God who has set His glory above the heavens - psalm 8 (kjv)
D. S.
Closed to casual visitors organised groups only... Car park chock a block... How many people work there? Different view of Edinburgh and Arthur's Seat
C.
Great views over Edinburgh
C. S.
One of the most fantastic places to visit.. Blackford Hill alone is such a wonderful place to see Edinburgh in all her Glory... Highly recommended....
M. K.
The ROE held a very interesting talk on coding and software engineering in astronomy. We learnt something of the high tech projects that people at the ROE work in at the forefront of technology. It was delivered in a relaxed and informal manner that any lay person could understand and there was practical activities writing simple code to build a working solar system on laptops which was great fun and very interesting. All this on the day before my son started his software engineering degree at Edinburgh Napier university. ROE has a get history and is well worth a visit.

K. E.
It was a great Evening and we had a great time with my mum Ian and my Partner. But it was disappointing that the blood moon couldn't be see for clouds
P.
Amazing day for 'doors open day'. We had a great time and everyone was so helpful and passionate about their line of work.
A. J.
Very helpful staff members, ready to answer all your questions and talk about very complicated things in a pleasant, easy to understand more way. Highly recommend even for families with young kids!
V. P.

(Translated) For me, Blackford Hill, the observatory hill, is one of the must visits on an Edinburgh tour. From the top you can see all the other hills of the city, the historic center, the Firth offline Firth and the North Berwick Law cone. Breathtaking panorama and without a thousand thousand tourists crowded as it happens on Arthur's seat. Also worth a walk down the steep wooden staircase to the forest alongside the river below, a circular tour that will take us back to the astronomical observatory.
