5* isn't enough. My son attends the 6 and under class twice per week. The level of coaching delivered is incredible.
The community is extremely welcoming and every session I am impressed with the level of attention to detail and genuine enthusiasm delivered

I attended EKBJJ as a complete beginner this week. I am not usually one to leave reviews, but my experience here made me have to.
I attended an evening beginners class, lead by Coach Dan. I was welcomed into that class like I would be to my family Christmas meal.
In my dodgy tracksuit bottoms and baggy t shirt, I took the class and Coach Dan + Other members of the class helped me every step of the way, helping me understand each part of what we were doing.
This environment is the friendliest, most encouraging I have ever experienced. Highly recommend.

This academy focuses on developing respectful, alert and knowledgeable human beings. They focus on the mindset as much as the physical techniques.
As a female, I have found this to be an exquisite experience- i found triggers within myself that the coaches and Professor all help me break down and conquer. Its invaluable, and they are serious when they say “this is a family”. They care about your wellbeing and your individual progress and are there to help you get the most of Brazilian Ju-Jitsu.
Highly recommend🙏🏼

I began training at the Eddie Kone Jiu Jitsu Academy in January of 2020. After 20-odd years of training in just about every other martial art under the sun (starting as a kid at the school Karate club and experimenting with Wing Chun, Muay Thai, boxing, traditional Japanese Jujutsu and spending several years training at Shaolin Temple UK), I had my first experience of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at another martial arts academy in North London and, like most people, was immediately stunned by its potency as a fighting system. I quickly decided to commit fully to learning the art, but was frustrated at the lack of a structured syllabus or any teaching of the fundamentals at the school I was attending. So I went looking for real instruction, and was lucky enough to find myself walking through the door of EKBJJ.
From the moment I came in for my first free trial class I was immediately struck by the warm welcome and the feeling of having come home. The Beginner level classes with coaches Dan and Elroy are the perfect introduction to the system; come in as a complete novice and within a few weeks you will walk out with newfound confidence and a set of skills that will improve you in life both physically and mentally.
The all-levels classes with Professor Eddie Kone represent quite simply the best education in martial science available anywhere. I've had some truly inspirational teachers, from 6th Dan black belts to real live world-champion Shaolin fighting monks. The Professor puts them all to shame. It's not just his warmth, and his ability to clearly communicate his mind-blowingly detailed knowledge of the art (which comes straight from the source - here you will learn fighting Jiu Jitsu precisely as it was taught to Professor Eddie by the Gracie family themselves); I firmly believe that the measure of a great school is in the conduct of its students, and my fellow students at EKBJJ are the most courteous and mutually-respectful men and women I have ever had the pleasure of training with.
I can't put it any simpler than this: if you want to learn to defend yourself, to test and expand your limits, and to find out what you're really capable of with the help of like-minded and respectful friends and training partners, you need to learn Gracie Jiu Jitsu; and that means you need to come and be part of the EKBJJ family. There is simply no better teacher, and there's no better school.

My journey began almost 8 years ago, I was in a very bad situation and my life felt it had no meaning. I was taken on board, baggage as well, and moulded in to some thing that I honestly never thought I could be.
Professor Eddie Kone not only teaching legit elite level Gracie Jiu-Jitsu but he also inspires and teaches us to pass on the gift of Gracie Jiu Jitsu to everyone around us.
It is more than "how to beat some one up", it is a way of life and an art that if you understand all its components will save your life, but I personally believe without the mindset of the head instructor and the way the details around mindset are passed down to us all, it wouldn't have the same power.
Clean academy, excellent teaching methods and an all welcome atmosphere make for a "has to be seen to believe" level of amazing! I cannot speak enough good things about EKBJJ.
This is a life saving academy of learning, taking people from the grass roots of being able to tie their belt, to elite level mma fighters.

If you’re looking to support your children to become confident, strong, assertive people, capable of protecting and defending themselves against any would-be aggressors, and you want them to really enjoy the experience and have fun learning how to do this, you will not find any better classes than this in London.
Having tried a few different martial arts for my children, and a few different martial arts schools, I now have a daughter in the 5-9 year-old class, and a son in the 10-15 year-old class, and they are absolutely loving every minute of it.
Sensei Tic is an absolutely fantastic teacher; technically he is clearly exceptional, but he also has a real aptitude for working with children of all ages. The dedication he shows in every single class is quite incredible. He puts so much effort into making sure that all the children, regardless of their ability, are constantly learning and improving.
On the evening my daughter attended her first class, she was unsure about what to expect, and a little nervous. By the end of the class, she was able to put Sensei Tic on the floor and into a submission hold and couldn’t wait for the next class!
There’s lots of discussion and opinion about which form of martial arts is ‘best’ for children to learn and it seems a bit of an endless debate. However, it’s clear these classes have lots of carry-over into real life scenarios, particularly given the Gracie Jiu Jitsu influence. The way Sensei Tic approaches the teaching is always with a distinct focus on what real-life situations actually look like, and what a would-be aggressor might realistically be likely to do, rather than assuming someone will attack in a way that is consistent with how things usually get practiced in martial arts classes. The end result is proper functional carry-over from the training to the real-life situation.
It’s also worth mentioning that the other parents are super-supportive and friendly, and there is a real family atmosphere, where everyone encourages everyone else.
Honestly, it doesn’t get better than this. Quality!

'What do you want out of your training?' is the first question that Prof. Kone asked me when I joined in 2017. I realise how important that question was years later. EKBJJ is styled as a self-defence based Jiu-Jitsu gym with a curriculum centre around dealing with circumstances where you could be attacked. Primarily it's about adopting a mindset to deal with conflict scenarios and having had left Krav because I felt it was not practical EKBJJ seamlessly came to me on a Google search. It was a definite upgrade, where krav felt useless the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu employed here felt much more usable and tbh who better to teach you than an ex-police officer, I thought. Eddie himself is present at his gym often (more on this later) and gained his black belt from Royler Gracie and striped later by Lovato Jr.
The gym has a good space to hone your skills and is generally a friendly environment. The popularity of the gym is testament to what Eddie has been delivering since opening his first gym over a decade ago, beyond that he ad numerous pro fighters in his academy to improve under Ed's tutelage. Despite all this though, and this will certainly upset a few at the academy it fell short of a full 5 stars. Why?
Well, for one Eddie has commitments elsewhere occasionally and unfortunately it breaks from the continuity of training when he's not there. When someone of such high calibre is missing their presence is certainly missed and despite him having amazing coaches to fill-in, it's not quite Ed. Granted, this doesn't happen that often but if it does its unannounced which struck me as a blip. His acumen and ability to teach is certainly special, it's a personal gripe and one that I hope will be approached sensibly in the future.
Second, another minor issue: Ed has a panache for monologues at the beginning and end of class, sometimes I felt not-so-comfortable with the content and more pertinently it ate into training time.
Third, Ed has a curriculum for sure and he announces the move of the week via email like clockwork, most of the time. I felt sometimes that certain moves would come around quicker than others or when Ed was not available the curriculum swayed a little.
Finally, Ed's style of teaching: He demonstrates a move, he shows counters and builds on it throughout the week then he opens the floor to problem solving. Where I feel it fell short was when it came to observation while I was practicing. Granted there are many students (sometimes a little too squashed!) but it felt wanting. However Ed overcomes that by asking questions, now for the shy types or those like myself who hate being public, it became difficult and I required that constant observation that I eventually found elsewhere. Now it's important to express that this is personal and each individual needs to find an environment conducive to them.
Eds commitment to his trade is evident in his students who he has promoted to senior belts and numerous black belts. The academy itself has great transport links, offers fundamental classes but falls short for parking spaces, you all should be walking anyway.
This is my perception of what I experienced while training with Ed for 2¼years, my opinion is my own I thought I'd share.

I am grateful to have found this hidden gem 💎. It has empowered, encouraged, motivated and made me feel like I was part of a caring family from day one. Me and my girlfriend have started training here a few months ago and never looked back, the teachings of Professor are priceless and passed down to us by Coach Dan, an amazing individual that will support your mental and physical growth throughout your journey here.
From the both of us, thank you. 🙏🏽

I have known professor for 3 years and he is amazing in different ways but teaching this beautiful art known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu
Many words can't describe how I feel but I am very grateful and honoured to be part of the family

Towards the end of December last year I finally got round to having my first ever BJJ session. Upon entering Sutherland House and getting up the stairs to the first floor where the academy is I was greeted with the warmest of welcomes. ‘Are you here for the BJJ?’ asked a nice guy sat on the floor waiting for the class to start. I felt at home in the surroundings, which I really appreciated. After sitting down, chatting and waiting.. more and more people started arriving and it became clear that this man was who I now know to be Coach Dan.
From there he guided me through the whole process from start to finish. Shoes off first of all. I then had the pleasure of meeting Coach Anna (who takes the ladies only classes) and she pointed me in the direction of the academy rules which I read through. She took the time to explain the processes and general things I should know. After being provided with a gi we got involved with the session. At these classes the vibe is brilliant and everyone is there to simply learn and better themselves - it is an infectious environment to be around.
I have now signed up to the two beginner classes per week at £65 a month. I am more than excited to have begun this journey (I only wish I’d done it sooner...) and I look forward to seeing where I can get to. .
I had the privilege of meeting the Professor himself Eddie Kone at a recent evening beginner class and he was the warmest of people, I look forward to hopefully one day sharing some time on the mat with him. I also had the privilege of meeting and sharing the mat with Zayd recently, the five minute ‘roll’ I had with him was invaluable and it was an honour to learn from him.
I can’t speak highly enough of this academy, if you are looking to start Gracie Jiu-Jitsu/ BJJ I can’t recommend this place enough. If you give it the time this discipline deserves, I can only imagine it might just change your life.
