The course Advanced Language and Culture was really well organised and it exceeded my expectations. Hugh and Andrew are very professional. The course allowed me to understand British culture and current issues a bit better. I was also impressed by the visits within London based on the themes of our sessions. I recommend this course to all teachers who are interested in contemporary UK culture, colloquial language and are open to new ideas.

I had high (perhaps too high) expectations for my advanced language and culture course at the Lexical Lab, I didn’t necessarily feel the level was taught at C1/C2 (near-Native/Native) level – but that wasn’t due to the teachers.
I didn’t feel a connection to all the subjects per say, but following 1 week in a 3 week programme it makes sense that they can’t cater to all your interests.
I felt inspired for my own teaching aspects in seeing how clips and articles can be used to both practise discussion as well as vocabulary. I feel I could implement many teaching methods that were used in my own classes and can’t wait to try all this after the holiday.
More than that, this course has inspired me to look into a master degree and PhD where that’s never been an actual interest before. I would definitely recommend this course, perhaps more so to those who’ve not been to London (and its sights/museums) before. I look forward to a repeat in the future!

The Teaching Lexically course I took with the Lexical Lab was just great!
Firstly, it was packed with information and practical ideas, much more than I’d expected. The sessions contained a lot of input and also opportunities for discussion and sharing experiences with peer teachers. The structure of the course (it first looks at teaching language systems and then skills with the Teaching Lexically approach) made it easy to follow the concepts the trainers were introducing. Secondly, the information in the course was really well organised: all course materials like handouts and presentations are easily accessible through a nice online platform, along with additional opportunities for extra reading on the subject of sessions. Finally, the sessions were really enjoyable because both Hugh Dellar and Andrew Walkley are very professional and knowledgeable.
In addition, I was really impressed by the cultural programme offered by the Lexical Lab. It was absolutely brilliant and allowed me to understand London and life there a bit better – I would clearly be not able to learn and see that simply by visiting sights on London on my own. Hugh and Andrew planned a really varied set of trips to different areas in London talking to us about everyday life of Londoners, city myths, historical places, politics, culture, art, social policies and many other exciting things 😃
Clearly, I do recommend this course to teachers looking for quality teacher training along the Lexical Approach, improving their language skills and learning more about British culture.

The course’s title I have studied under is English Boost. During the course we had had a huge amount of lexical material, provided by Andrew Walkley and Hugh Dellar who are high-educated, high-trained, expressive and professional teachers.
The lexical material was used in practice during afternoon and evening social program, which includes lunches and dinners, visits to the London’s museums and galleries, trips to the markets, parks and cinema.
I would sincerely recommend you to join this summer school and have a great adventure in London with the team of Lexical Lab.

This summer I completed two courses, Teaching Lexically and Developing Materials, at a Summer school run by Hugh Dellar and Andrew Wakley. Both courses were focused on teaching English from a lexical point of view. The Lexical approach to teaching English is not new but unfairly overlooked due to the dominance of the Communicative approach.
I’ve been trying to define teaching lexically for myself, and I’ve ended up with an understanding that it requires a great deal of professionalism, confidence and sufficient knowledge of the language one teaches. I guess it’s a choice every teacher makes for themselves, what parts of language should we teach? Is it a language from a general coursebook that a learner might not come across or hear, or use in their entire life? How relevant is this language to the learners? If you ever ask these questions, you will definitely get the answers from Hugh and Andrew as well as a clear idea of how the Lexical Approach works and what you as a lexical teacher can do to teach efficiently. What is also great about the summer school is that you will even get an opportunity to explore London and enjoy cultural and life there since Hugh and Andrew organise brilliant “field trips”! I enjoyed my time in London so much, I met absolutely amazing teachers from across the world and learnt a great deal from them, as well as from Hugh and Andrew. It seems to me that I can’t really tell how great the trip was. You can only truly experience it by going yourself!

A couple of days ago I returned from London where I took the course “Teaching Lexically” by Hugh Dellar and Andrew Walkley – the authors of really great coursebook “Outcomes”. It was really unforgettable experience for me – two weeks of useful and helpful information which I’m sure will help me to become a better teacher, amazing leacturers – Hugh Dellar and Andrew Walkley - who told us a lot of interesting things and always patiently answered all our endless questions, communication with colleagues and sharing our experience. Another really magnificent thing was visiting lots of places in London. If you think they were the most famous Tower, Buckingham Palace or Westminster Abbey, you are mistaken. Hugh and Andrew showed us lots of places which I would never see myself just because I would probably never think about visiting them – just real life of the great city, not only its beauty and glory. The only disappointment is that I’m not able to visit all the courses at once. I would definitely like to visit “English Boost”, “Better Testing and Assessment” and “Advanced Language and Culture”, so I still have a lot to do in London. Do not hesitate, these courses are really worth visiting.
