Beckford is a fantastic school. We have a son in Yr3 at the moment who started in nursery and my daughter is now in secondary school but went to Beckford beforehand. The teaching staff are amazing, very experienced and very caring. It’s a really nurturing school that caters for children of all abilities. My son & daughter are both very different in their strengths and interests yet the school has met their individual needs brilliantly. The school also prepared my daughter for the transition to secondary very well. The school provides a great all round education with lots of opportunities to take part in excellent extra curricular activities. The nursery staff are absolutely gorgeous and they prepare the children really well so the transition to reception is easy for them. We feel very lucky to have the school on our doorstep.

My parents, who were English Professors, moved our family to London when they accepted visiting professor fellowships at The University of London. They went on sabbatical from the college in New York they normally taught at, and we moved into a family friends home in West Hampstead for three years. We lived on Hillfield Rd., opposite Mill Lane, literally less than a five minute walk from the school. I attended Beckford Primary for 6th year (1984-85), before going to the Lower School at the nearby Hampstead School for 7th and 8th year (1985-87), basically the US equivalent of "junior high school." I had gone to elementary school in the US before coming to Beckford, and honestly, the level of educational quality in British public schools is VASTLY superior to that of public schools in the States.
In fact, when I returned to the US for high school (grades 9-12 in the US before college). I was at least a couple of years ahead of my peers intellectually (public junior high schools in NYC are particularly BAD schools which is why my parents chose to avoid having me go to one). Mostly what I remember about Beckford is how welcoming everyone was, and that all the other pupils in my class thought it was interesting to have an American in class with them. And that Beckford's physical building was really beautiful and architecturally interesting.
The academic rigor was MUCH MORE intensive at Beckford than it had been at my US elementary school, but The Hampstead School (where I went after Beckford for two years) was even more rigorous. I liked Beckford more out of the two schools, but I was at The Hampstead School longer, due to the timing of when I came to school in London. In the States, 6th year (we call the school year "grades") is already Junior High School, whereas in the UK, it's the last year of primary (or elementary school as we call it here). I got to attend Beckford's graduation ceremony and get a diploma (having already completed years or "grades" one to five here in the States), even though I was only there for one year, which was nice. I never formally graduated from The Hampstead School, because I only attended years 7 and 8 there, before I went back to the US for high school.

All you people knocking this place should leave England. Your sense of natural entitlement is breathtakingly offensive to all reasonable people. Schools nowadays are expected to do far more things than they were set up to do and that’s all because of people like you - totally use the system and expect government to provide you with your standard of living.
I went to Beckford in 1979 and I appreciate that was 40 years ago. Miss Abel was the headmistress. She was hardline, strict yet reasonable. She’d roast you whinging lot. No way any of you would have the bottle to take her on.
Miss McGrory was my teacher and she was so kind to me on my first day. I came from another country, so I really was the new boy.
Long live Beckford.

I absolutely love it. I find the staff lovely, helpful and it has very good teachers that are a role model for the children. Well done!!!
