My daughter has been at Polwhele from the age of three and is now in year 6. She loves every minute of school life from stable duties in the morning to after school clubs. Polwhele allows the children to be who they are and because of that the children achieve the best they can whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports pitch or performing on stage. It is one big family that supports each other. I would recommend the school 150%.

Child centric. Small classes. Inspiring teachers. Every teacher and staff member knows every child’s name and needs. And it shows in the way the children develop. A real family ethos, within an awesome environment. Very high academic performance. Opportune for sports, equestrian activities, performing arts scholars accolades and more. Able to work with learning difficulties and diverse children. The only real option in Cornwall for quality independant education. Very happy to see the school now offering up to and including GCSE’s. Couldn’t be better.

No ordinary school…
Polwhele House is a special kind of school one does not come across often. Having looked at many schools in both Devon and Cornwall we chose Polwhele for its small class sizes and its emphasis on letting children enjoy their childhood in a unique and supportive setting. The children we met at Polwhele were polite, respectful, confident and most of all happy!
A year on, we are delighted with our son’s progress and none of us have looked back.
Some of the reasons Polwhele House is extraordinary…
- It looks like Hogwarts (with horses)
- It has its own forest for riding and outdoor education
- The teachers are fantastic, they make lessons engaging and fun. I no longer have to drag details out of my son, he is bursting to tell me as soon as he gets home. The small class sizes mean they know your child inside out and can support them whenever and wherever they need it. How much the teachers actually know your child is apparent at parent/teacher meetings where the insights and detail they provide is staggering.
- They are small but mighty on the sports field - Polwhele are both Southwest Regional Netball and Rugby champions. This is no small feat for such a small school (huge kudos to the PE teachers who are exceptional at building team camaraderie, teaching the necessary skills and encouraging the children to improve their individual fitness levels).
- Rain doesn’t stop them, they play, train and learn outside no matter the weather!
- They teach life lessons whenever they can, for example while learning about rivers in geography my son also learned about water safety and drowning.
- They offer an abundance of activities and clubs including: performing arts, horse riding, swimming, sailing, surfing, kayaking, SUP, fencing, music lessons, choir, rugby, football, cricket, athletics, cross-country and more
- They have a school dog “Rupert” who specialises in mental health
Polwhele is an amazing place, don’t take my word for it, check it out yourself!

The Small School with a BIG HEART
We moved our son to Polwhele House at the start of this year and he is absolutely loving the learning environment at Polwhele. The teachers really work hard to keep the learning interesting, to engage children of all levels. There is a fantastic mix of traditional inside learning with outside learning, which the children love. I sense the Teachers love working at Polwhele (and I can understand why) and the kids sense it as well. Its the perfect size for everyone to know everyones name, which creates a real family atmosphere. I cant speak highly enough about the team at Polwhele, they are building a great learning atmosphere for current and future generations.

Extremely happy, traditional little prep school in beautiful grounds, my boys are really thriving there and bounce into school every morning. Lovely teachers, animals all over the place (ponies too) and small class sizes. Art is fantastic and they do surprisingly well in sport for such a small school, due to the v enthusiastic PE staff. Rugby (ISA south west champs under 11), football and cricket, but also riding year round, weekly surfing in the autumn term and sailing club in the summer - magical childhoods made here.

We have been absolutely delighted with Polwhele House school since we took the decision to move our child there several years ago after we had some bad experiences at another independent school in Cornwall. Since moving to Polwhele our child has grown in confidence, is happy, and loves school so much. As a result he is doing well across the board - academically, in sport, and socially. The school is committed to small class numbers, and the teachers know the children so well. The leadership and teaching team are fantastic. The whole ethos is child centric and focussed on how each child can achieve their best - something a large school could never pull off. The feeling in the school is warm, friendly and like a family. Life skills, social skills and how to behave well in community are given the focus they deserve. The presence of animals - cats, dogs, ponies, hens and rabbits adds a wonderful dimension that adds to the children’s well being. The school grounds are large and very beautiful, with so many activities outdoors. We are delighted the school is now extending to GCSEs - we know this is the very best environment for our child to fulfil his potential to age 16. Highly recommended to anyone thinking of independent education in Cornwall.

I am delighted with the holistic education and enrichment opportunities my child is receiving at Polwhele House. From a young age all of the children participate in team and individual sporting events and the effort and attention to detail that is poured in to the festive performances is incredible.
The school is surrounded by beautiful lawns and woodland which is utilised for nature enquiry, forest workshops, sports matches and horse riding.
The children are beautifully well - mannered, kind, respectful, quietly confident and genuinly enthusiastic about learning.

My daughter was here for 11 years from nursery through to year 8 and they were the happiest days of her life, she still talks about how wonderful this school was. How she was part of the Polwhele family.

Both of my daughters count down the days till they go back to school - not the days until the holidays. I think that says it all.
Happy children, go on to live full and happy lives ❤️

Polwhele house is a school I can’t explain. It’s like one big family with absolutely amazing teachers such kind staff and such well mannered students.I would recommend polwhele to anybody. Boarding is so much fun! With incredible food at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. With the small classes you can get the one to one you need .The talented students also get to participate and audition for a performing arts programme along with an equestrian scholarship you can also audition for.polwhele has a lovely range of animals such as pony’s ,cats ,dogs , fish along with animals in the science classroom. And the view coming in to school makes you speechless. It’s always sunny in polwhele although it may be raining out side. What makes this school unique is the friendship perseverance the kindness and the huge amount of respect which to me is very important. You will feel comfortable safe welcoming and most importantly happy. I had the privilege to go to polwhele and it was a big shame when I left but knowing I learnt so much from there I knew i could achieve lots more than I could before and I’m sure many others would say that too.So if your going to pick a school why not try polwhele🙂
