Reviews of The Mitchell Library
E. C.
I visited the library on a weekday morning at 9am. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I needed to use the scanner with documents slightly bigger than A4 and the staff member couldn't have been more helpful. After quickly issuing me with a library card, she set me up onto one of the computers and showed me how to do everything. Computers and scanners are free to use. I had a lot to get through and the staff were so patient. I will definitely be back.

This place closes at 5:00 pm. I was informed by a member of staff 10 minutes prior to closing that the library was closing. I decided to wait about 5 minutes before heading out as their website says they close at 5 so I did not feel the need to rush. Literally seconds after the first staff member had said about closing, I heard someone with a big booming voice repeating several times in quick concession, "Excuse me, can you move outside!?" There really was no need for that attitude from this person as I was planning to leave but in my own time and by 5 when the library closes. I appreciate people have been working all day and need to go home to their families or wherever/whatever, but seriously whatever your name is, have some compassion and don't let whatever powers you think you may have because of your job go to your head. We all deserve to be treated with some compassion and respect. You are no better than me because of who you are or what you do, and I do not appreciate you watching me in a menacing and bullying manner from your platform above to make sure I left the building. Also, you most definitely do not intimidate me and that is why I chose to speak up for myself. Please think about your attitude and chill out. GOD LOVES YOU. Go on, put a smile on your face and enjoy God's blessings.

Really interesting place to visit. The older part of the library is closed to the public because of the need for refurbishment. (2022). The more modern part of the building is less architecturally interesting but the contents / books etc is fascinating.
E. M.
Wonderful place to research your family history. The staff are always so helpful and kind.

So this place is currently crumbling and in need of immediate maintenance and repair. It is currently on going with repairs but otherwise this buildings a must visit for all. Excellent wheel chair access. Toilets galore. Update as of 16 july 2020 the place is still crumbling and all works came to a halt with corona. Hopefully will re open soon
Fingers crossed

Large number of holdings, very helpful knowledgeable librarians. A good place to discover genealogy.

Amazing building, huge collection of titles, quiet study areas and friendly staff. Well worth a visit

First of all, let me say that the Mitchell is an amazing library with amazing resources, the most amazing of which are the amazing staff. However, the current hours preclude anyone who works from accessing it, so until it changes, I have to rate three stars as opposed to five. You can't be one of the best libraries in the world if no one can get to use it.
o. c.
Great for children, studying and meeting with friends, highly recommended. Spectacular building.
D.
Great place to study, quite and inspiring. You have a choice of floors and noise levels, as well as a choice of working at your laptop or at a computer.Free wifi is available and with a very simple registration you can have access to the computers and you can borrow books. Also, nice cafe with high quality products. And the staff of the library and the cafe are wonderful!
J. S.
Information staff were most helpful on our query.
J. C.
Great library with multiple storeys. The children reading area is a bit on the small side but it's great in terms of the activities such as bounce and rhythm. Two baby changing areas are available for use and there are lifts inside the building too. Plenty of comfortable seating throughout ground floor and the cafe is nice too.

Having a Beautiful and historic building.
Staff are so friendly and always happy to help. Nice place to study, in a modern library.
Perfect atmosphere for those who really need a quiet place to get work done.

C. S.
Incredible multistorey building with plentiful resources and places to study. Computers, books, business gateway hub, really worth exploring!
J. P.
Great library. The best I have been.
This library has a great collection of books and the study room is big and very silent, so you can get the necessary concentration.
In addition to this, the architecture of the building is really beautiful and you can amuse yourself admiring the beauty of this landmark of Glasgow.
In sum, whether you are a user or a tourist, this library really worths a visit. One of my favourites place of Glasgow.
J. H.
I found it to be the most beautiful and sofiscated library so far. The architecture of the building is very nice. The hallway is elegantly decorated with a lot of details, and the floor is gleaming with classical checker patterns. By the way, the gentlemen's toilet at the side of the main hall entrance was classy too. But for apparent reasons I don't have a picture to share :-)
The Scottish theme is everywhere, on the floor, on the wall, on the display, on the furnishings, in the book collections. It was a total I'm for me. Maybe not exactly a tourist hot spot, but personally it definitely worth a visit if you are in the vicinity.
L. M.
Always love coming here staff are friendly and helpful and calm relaxed atmosphere, books, computers, printers, all u need and want available.
J. R.

W. U.
A nice place with some outstanding staff.
R. W. M.
Founded by a tobacco merchant, once the biggest library in Europe, this may he the most important place in town.
I gave a talk here at the Aye Write book festival but I'd love to come back here and work on my next book.
Libraries are essential parts of the community. It's good to see one that is ào big, attractive and well used
I'll be back

I usually come here when the university's library is overcrowded. The Mitchell Library is a great alternative with lots of spaces with enough plugs for everyone. Perfect atmosphere for those who really need a quiet place to get work done.
G. K.
An amazing resource library for the people of Glasgow, a truly unique thing to have for the people to go in for free and find out about history of the town, or of pretty much any topic. It does have a cafe for internet and stuff like that, but it's the old stuff which you can get from the helpful staff that mark this out as a real treasure for Glasgow and the surrounding area. If you haven't been... go and see what people have kept of our local history. It's amazing.
G. M.
We visited on the vague notion of finding out some information about my 2 x great grandfather who was killed in a mining accident in 1900. To my utter amazement, the very helpful Archivist (Andy, I think) was able to track down the doctors' notes from Glasgow Royal Infirmary, which provided a very full picture of the circumstances of his admission to hospital, shortly before he passed away. It was very poignant to read these notes. What a treasure trove exists at the Mitchell, with very helpful and knowledgeable staff.
S. C.
A big library with a good collection of books. Computers, study areas and Cafe are all excellent. Staff is also very friendly and cooperative.
I. C.
The theatre was good and the staff very friendly
M. I.

K. N.
During my time at Glasgow Mitchell was my favorite place to work and study from. Glasgow has a really great public library system with an enviable collection and seating space that can always be counted on.
K. G.
1st time in here went to print stuff off i needed such a lovely building staff at reception were amazing and very helpful thankyou to the lady that helped me with using the scanner.
Theres a wee shop in the library sells lots of glasgow goodies and a bonus Theres a cafe that does the amazing rolls n potato scones
M. W.
Love this library used to study there from 9 in the morning to 8 in the evening during my exams times. better than my college library where no one respects the manners of library.
L. R.
Distinctive building with a fabulous family history centre where I could spend hours doing research. Will visit again.
H. J.
I admire the patience and dedication of the staff that helped me with my search for historic books on very obscure and specific topics. The sort of information that I managed to extract from the Mitchell I may not have been able to get even from the internet. That must count for something.
R. M.
Outside the Mitchell Library, Glasgow, there's a rad wee eight stair double-barrelled handrail. It was skate-stopped around a decade ago and would usually only be considered skate-able if you put a sheet of wood down to cover the blind bumps (a few folk hit it popping before the bumps), but recently someone flipped a few slabs making it accessible again. it's a steep wee rail which tends to throw you into the ground but otherwise it's pretty much perfect. Plenty of run up. The run out is on to a road but it's not particularly busy and there's plenty of pavement before the kerb. There's also a fairy notorious road gap which is a little bumpy but really satisfying. It can be found just to the right of the run out of the rail, round at the side entrance to the library where you'll also find a rad wee driveway. There's still a couple of kerbs around, but unfortunately all of the ledges have been skate stopped. This is a rad spot, and one of the best known and most skated handrails in the UK.

Awesome library. A huge collection of books and CDs. Spread across in 5 floors with a cafeteria and reading chamber show case it's worth.
K. R.
Reserve books, newspapers and coffee. What more could you want. Worth the council tax for.

He asked me if I was going to practice the piano... Anyway, the building is pretty, and it's a great place to sit and read books by myself~ :)

The food source of prehistoric people was gathering, hunting and fishing, and in this age, collecting was replaced by farming and hunting by animal breeding.
