Went in for a quite coffee with a friend, as I'd just been discharged from the hospital.
The atmosphere is just blissful. There's Aircon units to keep the airflow, which also helps drown out the quote conversations of nearby tables -- but not obnoxious.
The lady who served us was full of happiness and we had a nice chat as we both were complimenting her beautiful tattoos.
Definitely going to be returning more often.

It's always so nice to browse, read and take in the popularity of a book store, I took my 75 year young Mother who loves a good book however , the lack of Edward Marston books she hadn't read was a little disappointing for her. For me I haven't picked up a book in a couple of years and it's the best shop I've been in since lockdown, hearing the chit chat, seeing new books and just marvelling that the store had lots of people in that the staff where kept busy was a reminder of what I had been missing, I do intend to pick up a good book soon. Thank you Waterstones.
T. C.
My granddaughter and I went to buy some graphic novels. She was very interested in one that was called, I think my son is gay or our son. I can not remember which. She seemed to enjoy it very much.
B. M.
I had what went for, the customer service was great and I really love being around books. The coffee area upstairs was good too, it's good for kids to choose what they want.
V. P.
One of my favourite places in town. The café is a great place to mooch and people-watch over a coffee. Support your town's bookstores!
D. B.
One of the better waterstones, great coffee shop upstairs, not Costa, better service.
They have upgraded the cafe, very nice and cozy.
s.
Quite a large Waterstones with a good selection. Decent cafe upstairs. Only downside is the Waterstones prices.
J. B.
Love this place but I'm biased as I love books. Nice cafe not a great lover of the coffee they use bitter/strong taste. Always clean and tidy. Staff are friendly.
J. M.
I can't help but pop into Waterstones whenever I'm in town, it's a little comfort to get away from the busy crowds. The café staff are really friendly and serve excellent coffee. Whilst the book staff are accomodating and will always go out of their way to find what you are looking for. Wonderful. Other Waterstones stores do not compare to this one in Hull.
N. M.
Absolutely brilliant .. a real haven .. very tidy and well kept store .. more spacious than some and ..... BRILLIANT cafe with exceptionally friendly and efficient staff - very good coffee too!
M. R.
Staff have always been amazing when entering or needing a book. Often recommending some that they're reading too at the moment. Always nice to realise these staff actually enjoy books and where they work. The place is a bit of a maze to locate things sometimes, even the staff have issues, but it's a really lovely Waterstones. Enjoy visiting
K. S.
Amazing place if u want a quiet place to read. The staff are super helpful as well.
L. J.
Great range of books and gifts. Store is very well maintained and organised.
P. B.
Nice book store with very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. More than just one stop book shop these days as it also sells small gift items too. Upstairs there is a coffee shop with a good selection of hot drinks, sandwiches, cakes etc. Sandwiches are a little pricey though. Parking is available at nearby St Stephens shopping centre or Prospect shopping centre if you know the city centre well.
c.
The 50% off hardbacks sale was excellent, I hope they do it again! It's a really great shop for browsing, but full price it is just not competitive. The sale made it a must visit.
K. T.
Very nice bookstore, with a lovely coffee shop upstairs. Staff are always happy to help.
A. S.
We went today to find some atlas books my son wanted and hadn't a clue where to look. A young man who works there was so helpful and helped find what we needed. Fantastic shop and staff. Definately be going here again
K. P.
This bookshop has an ambiance that just makes it stand out. Highly recommendedc🙂
A. P.
On a sunny day it is incredibly hot on the first floor. The balls on the stairs shine brightly.
M. G.
One of the best places to be in Hull, or any city, surrounded by imagination, knowledge, art, science, culture, poetry, and with lovely staff
J. W.
Fantastic book store staff always friendly lovely cafe upstairs.
n. s.
Absolutely brilliant they ordered the books I required and was in store ready to collect super quick. Next day couldn't be better great helpfull staff. Wide selection of books
a. v. d. t.
My book had been reserved and though I wasn't served by the same assistant he remembered the first encounter. Its good to know people are in touch .
A. R.
Always love going into Waterstones. Great service, and a lovely cafe. So you can buy books then read with a drink. They have a good selection of books, and games. The staff are very knowledgeable and can give good recommendations.
N. H.
Loveley atmosphere and the cafe was open. I was able to so my usual thing in Wateterstone's, namely looking through a big pile of books, mulling them over a nice slice of cake and pot of tea!
A. C.
Lovely store, however the section I wanted was on the first floor and I suffer with my legs & there is no lift.
T. B.
Would thoroughly recommend this bookshop. Good selection of Children's books and also cards.
S. H.
It's got lots of books. Not all the ones I want (I have specific tastes) but the lovely staff ordered what they could.
R. F.
Quite large price increases written on the wall menu with the old price crissed out, which doesn't look very presentable.
M. K.
Nothing is too much bother for the staff here. They were able to order a book that was out of stock and it was in store two days later and ready to pick up.
D. M.
Great for books However I usually go for the coffee. A friendly relaxed cafe. Beats the chains hands down
R. J.
Good selection of books, some more expensive than other shops, no leather book marks
N. P.
Great place for the kids books to help my son read
W. G.
Bought a bookmark to go with a book for a 10 year old for his birthday. He was so pleased with them, he took them to school to show his teacher. Great choice of unusual bookmarks.
H. W.
Great large store with plenty of space and lots of choice. Store was clean and very well presented.
D. M.
Lovely place for coffee, cake & to buy your books 📚
D. S.
Lovely book shop with very helpful staff. A spacious cafe upstairs and parking just across the street.
J. F.
Good selection of books, in the cafe drinks are reasonably priced around £2 however food has eyewatering prices, £5 for a sandwich is a bit much.
S. E. J.
Staff very helpful, looking for a book, advised what they had on stock ,led to a sale thank you
C. C.
Excellent friendly staff and a lovely children's book area. The staff have clear safety measures in place since lockdown and even with less staff are still helping customers by recommending a full range of books. My children love visiting the store. Always looks well presented and set up too.
G. M.
Staff helpful and knew which shelf had the range of books I was interested in.
J. A.
Good bookshop all clearly sectioned. Tranquil place
J. N.
Sandwich and coffee in very peaceful relaxing setting.
J. O.
Fantastic bookshop. Great selection upstairs and down. I like the staff recommendations and stalls that showcase items I may not otherwise come across.
A great points system on the Waterstones card and digital stamps. Once bought a book that was cheaper on their website and they gave me the difference back.
Often find a good deal and hunt for something unusual.
I restrict myself to hardback books for my more permanent bookcase, but the others are very tempting too - second book half price!
If I had more space I'd be there perpetually.
Have to be choosier now.
If I ever get rich I'd buy and donate away but I get too sentimentally attached to my books!
Happy shopping.
D. H.
Not bad to go and buy the book that you want
K. R.
Good selection of books. Has a cafe upstairs. Usually purchasing one of the "books of the month" gets a free hot drink.
A. R.
Surrounded by books what's not to love, please don't forget to go upstairs and check out the Sci fi/fantasy section
J.
Pretty great bookstore, the prices are on the higher side but its worth the quality. Also a café inside which is nice!
R. D.
Solid Waterstones. Good size, and plenty of variety of books.
u.
Great book story with a nice cafe upstairs. Well organised so it's easy to find the section of the store you want to be in. I've also met several authors and illustrators that have been there for signings and it has always been pleasant. It also has a great comic book section upstairs! Only negative things I can say about this store is that it is missing some popular book series, occasionally has the second or third issue of a series but not the first, and some of the books are slightly damaged (bent pages, scuffs and scratches on the cover etc.) But overall a great store that I visit every time I am in the city centre.
i.
Lovely staff every time we go. There's a guy with glasses who works there, he's awesome! Always so friendly and welcoming.
The food is tasty, a bit on the pricier side but worth it. And the sweet selection is great! The sweet stuff is really fantastic, tastes so good. They also have vegan and gluten free options which is nice.
And they're a breast feeding friendly establishment!
Always grab a coffee there while we're in town.
D. Z.
Waterstones is great, can always find anything you need and even if you can't they will accommodate you and order it in. And to top it off you can get a real nice coffee to read your new purchase upstairs on the 1st floor.
R.
A wide collection of books, comics and collectables, even from very niche corners of internet interests.
The atmosphere upstairs with the Costa is great and any questions that I've had the staff have always been super helpful :)
B. W.
A great book shop with a massive variety of they don't have it you can easily order it. The shop it's self is beautifully laid out and the central stairs are amazing.
m. a.
Nice book shop with a very nice coffee shop
J. A.
This is a great book shop. It has two floors, no problem if you have a mobility problem there is a lift to the first floor plus a disabled toilet. Staff are very helpful and while you brows your books you can have a coffee or cup of tea. Really comfortable friendly environment!!
D. H.
A wonderful shop, filled with books. Staffed by friendly people. Once here, I never want to leave!
C. L.
Lovely shop. Staff are very good.
C. H.
So much choice, worth a browse and the staff really care! Great little coffee shop upstairs.
A. H.
Something for everyone all ages, staff are pleasant and helpful.
R. S.
Great book store and they sell excellent coffee too. Pleasant staff who are glad to be back at work.
M. L.
Went into the cafe part which has a friendly warm atmosphere. Not a large menu, but enough choice and what they do is well done
k. i.
I love this place as im kind of an old shopper and want to go to shop qhere physically touch the book and feel before purchasing. One star down for cafe not even selling coffee. Definitely going back
m. w.
Love the books and it's nice to be able to chill out in the coffee shop. I recommend this place highly.
D. D.
Helpful staff, lots of choice, and in these days of e-books, net blogs, a.i, its good that the printed word still exists, and by the popularity of Waterstones, long may this continue.
G. T.
As always full of interesting books and offers.
P. W.
Sadly book stores are not what they used to be in the UK. They do have a large stock of books and the cafe is nice. However I have been spoilt by Books A Million in Florida, take a look at them and the large store. They survive so why can't we have stores like that.
Saying that, Waterstones is a good bookstore with plenty of choice.
g. d.
I was visiting watertones in Hull. Two place fore copies of my Book
The Sea The 70s And The Passage. A partial autobiography of my time at sea, placed in the local author section.
I also contains my memories of frequent visits to Hull, in the late 60s early 70s. It's very good of Waterston to stock it for me.
And I hope that people will find, read. And enjoy it.
Much appreciated happy visit.

Although I don't read to many books this branch has a great Cafe upstairs, although it can get a little busy on a weekend, it's a change from my usual branded coffee shop. I do find it's a little expensive and there isn't as much choice as some other coffee shops I attend. This branch isn't all about the coffee and cake though, they are there to sell books and they have a vast array of books located over 2 floors. The staff are very knowledgeable and are always keen to go that extra mile to help you find what your looking for.
P. T.
A comprehensive nation wide 'chain' bookshop which adds a big city width of literature and information to the smaller city atmosphere of Hull. Offering a huge selection of books, plus traditional board games and personal stationary, housed in a
modern, spacious, city centre, Jameson Street building which has a warm, relaxed, cosey decor. Friendly, knowledgeable, interested staff. Also, on the first floor, the store has its own spacious cafe providing a selection of tasty, competitively priced, high quality traditional / organic 'light bites' which can be enjoyed in its unhurried, comfortable and quiet atmosphere.
P. F.
Fantastic bookshop that has the feel of an independent despite being part of a chain, with knowledgeable staff, a brilliant cafe with cosy seating and excellent staff recommendations. They also sell a great range of gifts and games but these thankfully don't overshadow the book selection which is always up to date and often includes special editions.
D. P.
Amazing selection and the staff are very friendly and helpful, would definitely recommend
B. S.
Went to the cafe within waterstones .Good coffee and really nice helpful staff .Especially the young man who works there he is so good he has great people skills .Always clean .
P. P.
Lovely staff. Good sized store with all the books you need. I mainly go for the fantastic cafe on the first floor which does wonderful drinks and tasty cakes! Feels like a local run cafe in waterstones (although it is run by waterstones - so you can collect all your points to get free books!)
c. b.
Good book store with a decent selection of books of various genres. Nice little cafe. Staff seem a bit of a mix from very friendly and helpful members to others who seem to have been off on the customer service training day.
w.
There's a great range of books for everyone. The cafe is amazing and the atmosphere is so calm. You're even allowed to read the books there without buying them. This store is phenomenal overall.
D. M.
Waterstones is an essential part of University life. It is a relaxed and enjoyable experience to wander through the book store. I feel duty bound to look at my academic subject but always enjoy looking at other sections and displays. I think it's important to buy a novel or other book every so often, to switch off from studying. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Over the years, they have tracked down some obscure books for me and provided information about delayed publications. Recommended.
L. P.
Lovely store with a great selection of books for everyone, from fiction to comics to local authors to classics. The café is good and it's great to sit in store, reading and enjoying the atmosphere. Perfect for book lovers :)
J. M.
Lovely bookshop in the heart of the city centre.
n. w.
Lovely. Bookshops and coffee go together like peaches and cream, posh and becks. Bernard Black would be turning in his grave, if he were real. And if anyone gets that reference, please contact me 😉
Very friendly staff, comfy sofa, first class. I highly recommend a visit.
K. G.
The best place to buy your favourite book and the best place to have a coffee or tea.
H. H.
I love this bookstore so much, it's by far my favourite bookstore. The mood is quiet and relaxing and couldn't ask for anything better. Staff are amazing and the café is brilliant. Love going here.
L. J.
Very busy when I went but just what you would expect at this time of year really.
Went and got a coffee before shopping around the store and despite being busy they were quick, talking to people while they waited and generally friendly (unlike another place I had just been)
After my coffee I went and grabbed a couple of Christmas presents at a decent price and they were really friendly when I come to pay for them.
Overall it was a pleasant experience

A step back in time before Google, online searches, and the lazy ways that the internet has infected us all. Browse the book shelves, sorted by subject, and look at the range of books on offer, upstairs or downstairs, the building has the ambience of a library. Yes prices of books are higher, yes it means more than just typing in what you want, and yes it does take time. At one time Hull had 2 or 3 bookshops, now gone, and Waterstones brings those days back, an often busy cafe is situated on the upper floor, but I have not used so cannot comment. A ray of sunshine in a often gloomy outlook for the high street, and the fact that books still have a place in this digital modern age.
L. S.
Staff was excellent, some books on the second floor was a little out of place, i was purchasing the new WOW novel (Shadows Rising) and waa looking in the game literature section and found it in fantasy section, not a huge leap but hey, if your going to have a game section...
R. C.
Good place to buy books funnily enough
J. F.
This cafe is ok. Bit slow to clear and clean tables. Toasted sandwich tasty and coffee good. Nice selection of sweets but I didn't try any. Recommend you give it a try, it's calm and plenty of seating.
P. P.
As a book lover, this is a definite need to go place
D. H.
Called in for a couple of books and a coffee
Lovely environment for both
M. R.
Rarely buy books, mainly go for the coffee shop upstairs. Like the atmosphere here - it's quite open plan and well spaced out. We prefer the coffee in Costa but it's so bloody noisy in them you can't enjoy it as much.
R. A.
What a great shop. Down to the selection of grat books but fantastic staff.
Was looking for a basic cookery book for my 12 year old Grandaughter. The assistant took us straight to Usborne Beginner's Cookbook, brilliant! nailed it in a oner.
D. M.
It's always a pleasure coming to Waterstones, even if it's only to browse. With a calm and relaxing atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff who clearly love books, and an in-house coffee shop, I could spend much more time there than my schedule (and budget) would allow. Long may they continue to deliver a first-class service.
L. D.
Despite its large size the whole shop always feels very homely. During head straight up to the 1st floor to check out the graphic novels and I'm always greeted by the smell of fresh coffee from the lovely café they have on the 1st floor. Recently heading in looking for Critical Role: Vox Machina: Origins Volume 1, checked in some local gaming / geek shops but hadn't had any luck. Didn't expect Waterstones to have it but I found a copy, not the first time this has happened either. Any graphic novels or similar items that have been hard to find in other stores have usually turned up in Waterstones without me even having to order them in. Decent pricing as well, frequently found books cheaper here than in other shops or online shops, Amazon ect. Even if you doubt they have what you're looking for it's definitely worth a shot, and if they don't I'm there will be something to catch your eye. Treat yourself to some nice food & drink at the café whilst you start cracking into your new book 😊
R. B.
Nice clean shop, friendly, helpful staff, well stocked. Don't know what the browsing is like, I always shop click and collect online and never a problem. Highly recommended.
L. D.
Waterstone's is a fabulous bookstore with a wide range of books all split into easy to find sections, it is SO easy to spend hours in here (as I have)! The staff are also lovely and extremely helpful so 10/10 on the actual store😍
The cafe inside is also incredible - it's such a relaxing atmosphere with extremely friendly staff once again, as well as a great menu! I was extremely surprised and pleased to find some vegan food on the menu - I managed to get myself a falafel wrap, pot of tea and a chocolate & orange tart which were both delicious😍
By far my favourite bookstore around, would recommend it to anyone!
B. B. B. J.
quite pricey however staff are very helpful and it does have quality products
c. c.
Great book store and you can sit and have something to eat and drink too
J. M.
The bookshop has a cafe upstairs and free internet. It's a quiet and respectful atmosphere and honestly great for any occasion if you're looking for somewhere to simply plug some earphones in and do some journalling or reading away from the world.
p. r.
Brilliant helpful staff. But couldn't get the book I wanted, hence the 3 stars. I had to get it online.
E. L.
Great stocks of past and present publications, helpful and knowledgeable staff readily available allows shoppers to find their chosen book or order those not readily available. Occasional book signings are hosted through the year and it houses a pleasant coffee shop on the first floor too.
Y. M.
Went with Freind her to get some books
M. F.
Good food and drink coffee and lord's of books
C. R.
They have such a variety of books for everyone
C. S.
Mostly found what we went in for, came away with extra stuff we didn't go in for. Know to order online and collect instore for specific things next time!
D. W.
A warm and inviting staff who are always more than happy to point me in the right direction and have no issues ordering books that are not in stock for me. They seem to always have a sale or two on and they have a good selection across all genres.
K. C.
My favourite book store. Something for everyone. The gift ware is somewhat overpriced but the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The coffee bar upstairs is lovely.
T. T.
Love this place, a real bookshop, full of wonderful books to enjoy. Also a coffee bar and gifts, so a good place to browse around and buy books as gifts for friends, family...or yourself 😊
J. K.
My favourite book store. Friendly and well informed staff. Always a good selection. Well laid out. Cafe upstairs very quiet.
C. B.
Great selection of books ranging from manga to real life, you can browse as you like and even read in the Costa coffee shop on the first floor. It's never too busy and the staff are always helpful
M. G. Y.
I do like waterstones, I worry for their survival on the High Street. Their stores always seem cozy, well lit and warm.. The selection of books on offer is not the greatest but let's be honest, how do you please all of the people all of the time and besides they'll order you a book in and its usually a quick service.
This store benefits from Costa coffee leaving it that's for sure. It could carry more academic books also. Waterstones pricing has always been a little on the high side or the full rrp but it pains me to see such heavily discounted books in supermarkets..
One other thing to mention is that the staff seem friendly and helpful.. I was able to get a book I was after signed from waterstones and this store something I don't see the likes of tesco offering. Fingers crossed it can weather the future and diversify enough to stay relevant.. Only time will tell..
R. A.
My favourite cafe is upstairs - really good choices for snacks and drinks, and especially their herbsl teas. Also they have soya milk. Great thing is thst you can sit and look through books while having a cuppa - whsts not to like.
m. O.
Such a great place to sit in peace with a pot of tea and read or chat quietly with friends
B. M.
Hit hard by Xmas but still a fab book shop!
S. C.
Nice place to be, read, work, relax.
J. G.
Such a haven in the City of Culture. Plenty of local books. Plenty of Star Wars books (the most important reason for my patronage!). A wonderful cafe with incredibly friendly staff.
J. Z.
Quite a chill place with seating you can use to try out some books. Easy on the eyes - not too dark, but comfortable when it's too bright out.
G. G. B.
Nice & relaxed bookshop. Plenty of stock to browse through. Knowledgeable staff, & very helpful/friendly. There's nothing like a 'proper bookshop'!
J. M.
Great shop with a wide selection. Board games are a little expensive but I got some great postcards here
M. R.
Good attention full attention of staff to help + assist polite even in view of awaiting queue really nice to see that the store was really busy on Saturday gives the good impression that people still love books
N. H.
Lovely coffee and food! Nice quiet atmosphere and warm unlike other coffee shops in the area! Great selection of book on offer too :)
A. C.
Fabulous shop. Great selection, cafe and staff. Lifts the whole area
L. G.
The staff here are always super helpful and friendly. Really good selection of sci-fi, horror and fantasy too.
E. W.
Have such a huge range of stuff, informational, biographical. I enjoy the true crime and graphic novel sections, which they have quite a large stock off.
T. W.
Lovely shop full of some beautiful books. We visited the coffee shop upstairs which I cannot fault. Lovely cake and hot or cold beverages.
A. R.
The range of stock might not be as expensive as it used to be, but there is still a good selection and I managed to find books for everyone on my Christmas list.
S. S.
Excellent staff, outstanding selection of books. Great place to drop in for a coffee in peace and harmony.
m. e.
Well the costumer services are ok. The issue is with the food, meaning few bits from each items. If you want almond croissants expect that their answer "we ran out of them".
E. A.
Very nice cafe, large chouce of books
N. W.
Great place to get your books from.
P. M.
Excellent selection, friendly staff, good location, coffee shop inside. You can sit and read as long as you like. Nothing bad to say about it!
M. P.
A great place to purchase books if a little on the expensive side
A. P.
The best bookstore ever in Hull..
E. M.
Was wonderful to go for our coffee. Was usually first stop when in town. Missed it so much
r. l.
Great book shop make sure to look upstairs
D. H.
Good choice of reading material
D. H.
Waterstones always had the nicest buildings and this is no exception. Staff are always so friendly and helpful. There is also a lovely and reasonably priced café upstairs!
J. M.
It was Waterstones. Not sure what you are expecting, but it was a book shop selling books and other sundry stuff. Did exactly what I expected a bookshop to do. Staff were polite and helpful.
P. S.
Excellent choice of books and lovely cafe ambience.
S. H.
A nice selection of books and print media. Could have done with more in the card games section, it seems like they are cutting down on Pokemon merch.
S. C.
In these days of the dying bookshop, these guys really try. Clean place, roomy; the book displays are well placed and presented. Staff are helpful. Costa Coffee on the first floor.
I. D.
I cannot recommend this store highly enough. I go in at least once a month requesting information on new releases & everytime they come through with the information I ask for. All the staff are exceptionally well mannered & friendly.
A. S.
Very good
C. P.

Very well kept and stocked bookshop with the usual additional non-book items: gifts, games, notepads, cards etc. Cafe on the first floor with lift access.
R. J.
Great selection of books, friendly, helpful staff and a pleasant cafe area to just relax and read or meet friends!
A. H.
Love Waterstones, love books. The staff are always helpful and lovely
H. A.
Best place for book lovers, some books are in half price and in books you can have buy one get one free deal, they also have cafe and stting area to chill.
M. S.
Shop was quiet but had everything I was looking for, can't really beat actually holding a book.
M. S.
Brilliant book shop, took 3 year old granddaughter to spend her book token, she loved it , nice little reading area for her to sit and decided what books she wants, and for Nanny to read to her.

Great book shop they have it all. Nice cafe upstairs. I bought two books for the price of one that have not red yet.

Very good book shop with most authors available but unfortunately the books I wanted had very limited stock, only 3 books in stock from a list of 8 possible titles.
C. M.
Great Hull bookshop, staff really seem to enjoy working here and enjoy helping out. Huge selection. Great shop!

s. s.
Lovely bookstore and so much to choose from with lots of good bargains on books. Staff were lovely
J. A.
My favourite book shop. Enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff. My grandson loves it there too.
M. B.
A very good range of books. I put one star down due to many books been poor quality as in they are turning gray or yellow and even ripped pages.
G. S.
