Reviews of Browns Pie Shop
A. P.
Had a very nice lunch. I had the cheese pot pie, friend had belly pork. Both had cheesecake for pudding which I highly recommend. Also the hot chocolate is too die for. I will definitely return. Super busy, staff were still friendly and happy.
P. R.
Fab! I loved the braised pork (don't quote me on the name!) and the location is lovely, a minute walk from the magnificent Lincoln cathedral. A wee suggestion, the wine by the glass was good enough, but I felt it was not up to scratch with the rest. Still a full 5 star rating for me. The service was perfect, friendly, discrete and attentive as it should be. Next time I'll try one of those pies...

Lovely meal, arrived around 12.15, plenty of seating, warm and welcoming service. Beef and ale, chicken and leek pies for the adults - served on a bed of mash with seasonal veg - broccoli, red cabbage and swede, all very tasty. Kids meals were also very good. Family of four ate for just under £50.
L. D.
Loved this place and their food. I got this meat pie. It was super yummy and rich in flavour. The staff are so friendly and great. Highly recommended if you ever come to Lincoln.
E. D.
Absolutely phenomenal. Best meat pies I've ever had. We had a steak and kidney pie and a game special pie. Both were amazing, flaky crust, excellent gravy, the meats were delicious. The game pie also has an orange zest to the gravy that is mind blowingly good.
You'd be daft to not get the mash with it. We got one of the garlic flavored mash and one of the cheese. Some of the best mashed potatoes I've had in my life, not just in England. The cheese one was almost approaching an alligot. So good.
The veg was decent, the standout being the red cabbage, cooked with raisins or sultanas. Light tartness to liven up the cabbage.
Super friendly staff. And though they don't mention it on the website they are very dog friendly! Wonderful place. Will make a point of making a reservation here whenever we are in Lincoln!
E.
Really nice food. Good beer on tap. Service good. All in all a great experience.
J. A. N.
Food was delicious and staff very friendly and attentive. Ambiance inside was really cozy. When you eat in it is a bit pricey but worth. The only minor annoyance was discovering that was an in-build 10% service charge at the time of payment. Don't known if that information is in the fine print in the Menu, but regardless I was not aware of it.
M. B.
We had the best pies we have ever had here. So tasty, a treat choice and the pies came with flavoured mash potato, vegetables and fantastic gravy. Service was great and they also did a great selection of puddings as well. Fantastic food here and well worth a visit. Highly recommended
R. B.
The food was tasty and the service was excellent. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us on a very busy day, even though we didn't have a reservation. My two criticisms would be that the quantity of vegetables was insufficient, and I resent having the 10% service charge automatically added to the bill.

Didn't book called in on the off chance and was greeted by lovely staff who shuffled things round and got us seated. Amazing food great atmosphere definitely recommended the beef and ale pie it was lush 5 stars all the way
R. R.
Gorgeous, they do takeaway ones too. In shock at how nice they were
P. E.
It's been 2 year since we last visited. This time we grabbed a midweek evening meal on a busy Wednesday. Reassuringly nothing at all has changed since our exceptional experience last time over. We, mistakenly, ordered starters which were sublime - the scotch egg was perfect! Although we had to wait a little time for these to arrive, given the busy restaurant and quality it was more than acceptable and worth the wait.
I had the Chicken Wellington as a change from pie and this was probably one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Every bite was amazing. My wife sadly couldn't finish her chicken and mushroom pie but they were more than happy to provide a box for her to take it home with some of the remaining veg.
100% recommended and would certainly advise to book well in advance.
C. L.
Delicious pies! I had the cheese and my husband had the special with turkey and stuffing. Veggies were so good too!
J. B.
Really great place. Fantastic atmosphere, food is reasonably priced and absolutely lovely. Very friendly staff, had a great experience.
A. J.
I was a bit hesitant to go to a place that looks a tourist trap however some friends who live here recommended it if what we wanted was a pie. Place was a bit small and tables were quite close to each other. Food was correct, tasty although pies could have been a big bigger. The soufflé we ordered as a starter was delicious.
I. S.
If you need a pie, this is the place in Lincoln. The pure with a bottom😃, not just the tip lid. Great staff. Ate there after attending Steampunk festival
G. K.
The meal was amazing. We shared the surf and turf starter which was excellent. I had the duo of venison and it was beautiful. The real was spot on as well. The wife had a chicken and leek pie shortcrust pastry and it looked lovely. I would recommend this place.
J. A.
After a break of nearly two years I returned to Browns with hesitation. Could it maintain the previous experiences. The answer was a resounding, yes!
If anything the food and service was better than I remember. And best of all two courses and a bottle of wine for two at just over £30 a head. Book ahead if visiting Lincoln as it isn’t one to miss.
m. r.
Great place. You have to sit downstairs in the cellar its great. The pies are gorgeous. Shortcrust top bottom and sides perfect or you can have meat in a bowl with a huge pastry top.
Ohhhh they also have a nice selection of not pie but who wants that.
R. G.
A delicious meal for 4 last Saturday evening. We thoroughly enjoyed the burgers, pies and puddings. Very attentive and friendly service. There was a slight issue in that we asked for ice cream/sorbet and cookies for pudding but the cookies needed to be freshly baked - can't argue with that. However we were running out of time and couldn't wait that long, so as an apology they gave us another pudding on the house. Highly recommend.
N. G.
Most pleasant. The fish pie I ate was excellent, and there was a wide range of pies on offer. Their chips were top notch too. Prices were reasonable (between £10-15 for a main course). The staff were very friendly. A nice place to have some filling food.
L. W.
The food was tasty apart from the veg which I thought was undercooked, we never stayed for dessert, the staff kept coming to our table to ask if everything was ok, once would have been enough but they must have come and asked about 8 times, one of the waiters tried to take our empty plates but our daughter hadn't finished eating which I thought was very rude and my husband had to ask him to come back when she had done, we felt very uncomfortable and couldn't wait to leave. We definitely won't be going back.
A. H.
Great place and the staff was excellent.
My main course was great and worth an order (pork belly, not a pie but delicious) but sadly my pudding jam rolly polly was cold and the custard was way too thick.
Maybe there was an issue in the kitchen, but the difference between the 2 courses was so large
T. R.
Great food as always but it's been a while since we visited and the menu has greatly reduced. The pies we ordered were no longer in a pot with flaky pastry which is such a shame as that was always its main selling point for us
J. B.
We had a nice lunch here yesterday. They found us a table quickly, although we hadn't booked. My chicken pie was only warm, rather than hot but my husband's stout and steak pie was delicious. Both pies came with a nice selection of veg. We had 2 delicious puds from the board. Will visit again.
N. R.
Great pies and great service. Happily accommodated our large group while maintaining a quick delivery time. Good house beer as well.
F. H.
Superb pies, and a choice of 5 varieties of mash- just heavenly home cooking in a lovely quirky eatery, the staff were lovely and seemed genuinely happy in their work which created a great atmosphere- my only regret- not discovering Brown’s earlier rather than on Graduation day, but we will be back for more
B. M.
Comfort food at its best. Tasty pies with mash/triple cooked chips and veg all cooked perfectly. Other things such as burgers available. Eat in or takeaway.
W. L.
Was disappointed, having told them we had someone in a wheelchair, they said it was only a little step to get in. Well yes it was but the chair could not get through the door!!! Also to add insult to injury they put us in the basement with steep steps and expected a 94 year old to get down!!!! So surprise, surprise she banged her leg and bleeding commence. No problems with food or drink, just no understanding of disability.
G.
Fantastic pie! 2 vegetarian options on the menu. They were kind enough to switch out the lunch special pie with one of the veggie options for me. The braised cabbage is also amazing, as is the Bailies cheesecake.
J. S.
Lovely pies and great service. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us and make room for our pram despite how busy it was.
R.
Got a Chicken, Leek and Mushroom pie to go. Fast service and really loved how they included the cooking instructions in the packaging. One of the best pies I have ever had! Will be returning!
Edit: Second visit
My partner, family and I came here to celebrate my graduation and were so pleased with our time here. Again absolutely delicious meals and such lovely staff. The atmosphere is so homely and comforting, I'm so glad we came here to celebrate the day.
L. T.
Good service, excellent menu, well cooked food, interesting range of ciders all in all a decision made to come again.
M. L.
Beautiful shortcrust pastry on the lamb pie and the chips were lovely. Two things to watch: your head on the low doorways, and ask for the gravy in a separate pot if you don't want it over everything. A little claustrophobic, but really, it's part of the atmosphere of the area. Great place to have lunch after visiting the cathedral.
S. A.
Great service, delicious pie. Wonderful little independent. The chips are the best in the city.
L. R.
Wow! What an experience! Fantastic pies… my daughter had the game pie and I had the pork, apple and black pudding one. Both were absolutely delicious, as were the vegetables which were cooked to perfection. The service was brill too; our waiting staff were efficient and friendly. Will definitely return as often as possible and will recommend to friends!
T. S.
Really enjoyed the menu selection and my choices. Dined in the cellar with a large geoup and the staff were great. Prompt. Accommodating. Clean environment. Reasonable pricing. Definitely would come back again!
S. R.
Oh my god, best pies In the universe... Veggies and spuds were cooked to perfection. Gorgeous wine, service staff were delightful and food came out at the perfect time. Really cozy warm atmosphere. Cannot fault this restaurant and I'm quite critical generally. Would recommend 120%
P. J.
Haven't been for a few years, and the food is as excellent as ever. I have never had Chicken Wellington and this was amazing.
A. M.
Staff are very friendly and welcoming.
Food is absolutely amazing, worth every penny!
We will definitely be going again
K. S.
Not a huge place so booking is a good idea. Staff were friendly and professional. Unfortunately a few options were sold out in food and beer however the choices we made were absolutely delicious and we would recommend. Potions were large!
E. g. c.
Nice restaurant. Cozy and very careful in some details. Nice food, good services and the prices is fair. Good selection of Ales. The children enjoy with the kids menu. A very good election in Lincoln. Certainly we repeat.
D. B.
Fantastic food, could have maybe done with a drop more gravy.
R. H.
A very cosy dining area, with good choice menu (not just their speciality pies). Decided to lunch there. Good quality, ample sized pie, and an excellent presentation of vegetables to accompany. For us a nice selection of red wines. Service was polite, professional and timely. Note all meals are cooked to order! Completed with a traditional desert. Now returned home to rest relax and maybe then to find a spare belt of a slightly larger size!
L. c.
Had the steak and ale pie, superb! It was filled to the brim and the pastry was amazing
P. E.
Lovely traditional restaurant in a tiny historic building. Staff were very pleasant and attentive.
C. L.
Fantastic food and staff. Will definitely visit again.
C. W.
Ordered for collection and food was well packaged/presented and delicious, helpful staff too. thank you
L. R.
Gorgeous! Visiting this spot is a must if you’re in Lincoln. For us, it’s a monthly treat - the quality of the food is always stunning, the flavours on point and the service friendly and welcoming. Even today when it was really busy (perhaps a birthday or event of some sort) the staff did everything they could do accommodate us, and yes, while we did have to wait for our desserts a bit, we really cannot fault them as some times are simply busier than others.
Thank you so much for all the great memories and meals we’ve had at Brown’s so far: can’t wait to be back already! We’re wishing you all the best and much success with your amazing restaurant. xx
G. H.
Fabulous place! Delicious food (pies to DIE for) and lovely friendly and welcoming staff 5stars!
Y. M.
Small restaurant but good atmosphere. Food excellent, must haves are the pies and mash. Good value for money.
S. B.
Best Sunday lunch ever! Slow roast belly pork melt in the mouth perfection. Top drawer roast pots and yorkshires and good selection of veg cooked just the way we like them. Not almost raw! Brilliant and told chef so.
M. F.
One of the best steak and kidney pies I’ve had, good pastry, plenty of filling and just the right amount of gravy. The mash was smooth and a good selection of vegetables, not the normal veg you get in some restaurants. Plus a good choice of beers. A little on the pricey side for pie and mash but considering how authentic the restaurant is and post Covid-19, it’s worth a visit.
H. A.
Still waiting...can't speak for the pies...
When the pies finally arrived they were tasty. No chips :-(
C. R.
Lovely traditional bar & restaurant. Highly recommended 👌
D. G.
The best pie experience ever. The cheese pot was stunning, there was a number of cheeses included. Starter also lovely, belly pork strips. Defo return👍
S. H.
Very nice pies, we had the steak and ale and lamb and mint. Served with mash and veg and plenty of gravy. Finished off with fryit crumble and custard. Great service and staff friendly. Would recommend.
G. E.
I visited with friends and it was very nice with tasty pies, mash and vegetables; then we had a sweet what was very nice. The service was great and the only downside was the vegetables as a table for two got one bowl between them and a table of seven only got two bowls of vegetables between us and also I asked about some garlic or hot sauce and no reply. Plus upon entry my friend ordered a coffee and it was cold.
I was a good do and it would be nice to visit again plus they do a take away menu also. Worth a visit
A. H.
Probably the best pie I've ever eaten! Fantastic food and friendly fast service. Nice little cosy restaurant.
J. W.
Fantastic from start to finish. Friendly staff & couldnt fault the meal, all three courses!
J. G.
Without a doubt the best pie and chips of my life. Would recommend unreservedly. My only regret is being too full for dessert this time. I will be back for the jam roly poly!
t. k.
The pies and chips and veg here are ridiculously delicious. The pie pastry is perfectly flakey, the chips are probably the best I’ve ever had and the veg were 🧑🍳💋
S. H.
Friendly staff. Delicious, tasty food. Not cheap, but well worth a visit.
R. L.
Great place, fantastic food which was beautifully presented and piping hot. Friendly staff who couldn't do enough for the customers.
W. D.
Went today for Sunday lunch, had the beef. Very dissappointing. Meal and veg luke warm. Only one draft beer £5. Table cramped for the three of us. Won't be going back.
P. D.
Every time I'm in Lincoln I have lunch at Brown's. Without fail.
The pies are some of the best I've ever had, the staff are lovely, and the prices are reasonable. Make sure to book ahead, this place is understandably popular.
m.
Best pie I've had in years!
Highly recommended.
C. P.
Wholesome home cooked food - we loved the pork and apple pie and cheesy mash! Highly recommend
K. W.
Amazing home cooked pies and other food. Staff are great
K. M.
Absolutely fantastic family meal at Browns, which we’ve been hearing great things about for several months since we moved here. The staff were amazingly attentive and the food was incredible. The mash was great phenomenal as were the chips!
Can’t wait to come back.
F. A.
Veg is very fresh and pies are made with a lot of passion. Staff are extremely friendly and cozy atmosphere. I would highly recommend it because anyone who wants a very tasty and fresh meal this would be great for you. Meal price is reasonable for the size of food which always fills you up. 10/10
M. D.
Tasty with great service but in tiny rooms.
I thought the portions looked small, but I was mistaken. I thought it was expensive for a pie, but the quality was superb!
We both had stout and beef pie, one was shortcrust fully encased and the other was with a puff pastry topping.
The puff pastry was the lightest I've ever had! So light, it disappeared when cut, but it was delicious. The pie filling was even better, probably the best ever!
The mash portion looked small, but it really wasn't.
The mixed vegetables that were served with it were adequate for 2 people.
The extra gravy we'd requested was regrettably thin, but full of flavour!
All of the staff were very attentive and provided carafes of tap water and were plentiful that we didn't have to wait for anything. They were like busy bees, rushing around serving customers.
We didn't order starters, but we given the most tastiest bread ever, served with very cold butter which wasn't easy to spread, but again, taste was very good.
The ground level room was tiny, claustrophobic and very noisy! There wasn't much air and it felt just too frantic with the noise. There is another downstairs seating area, but I didn't see how big it was. Having said that, the pies are so delicious, I'd definitely return!
T. H.
Pies not as nice as dish versions and smaller. Atmosphere good and service good
w. “. t.
Food delicious, service friendly thank you
E. W.
Lovely little shop with delicious fare. Always great to see locally caught game.
S. T.
Delicious food, great service and best of all dog friendly. They even brought treats and water for the doggos
A. 8.
Absolutely amazing delicious food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere. Very attentive staff and a well deserved 5 star review.
L. B.
Great food, lovely staff could not fault! Can't wait to go back as I need to have pudding next time
G. S.
Great place to eat. Great food served by friendly staff and the added bonus of a hand- pumped local ale to wash it down. A must.
A. B.
Great place for a lovely pie and great service.
J. W.
Delicious pies. Probably the best I've ever tasted
P. D.
Great food, great service and staff. Could just do with an automatic door closer on the rear door to the toilets.
Highly recommended if you are in Lincoln
S. l.
Yes the pies were great, lovely chips but didn't appreciate the staff trying to upsell everything, being asked if i would like to order 2 seconds after being seated was also too much, food great but i wouldn't return
R.
The pies at Browns Pie Shop are delicious! The ingredients all taste so fresh and everything has so much flavour. The prices are reasonable, especially for the portion sizes you receive. We ate in the cellar area, which was lovely and cosy. The staff are brilliant and they have a good drinks menu.
B. C.
Delicious wholesome food.
Perfectly cooked, plentiful and fresh. Plus cheerful, helpful staff what more do you need
S. C.
Great food for all tastes in this friendly restaurant. An extensive menu - including lots of yummy pies of course! Recommended. 🥧
S. S.
Delighted with the tea-time special three course menu, which offers brilliant value. The Pork Belly and crackling (preceded by a great fish cake) was so beautifully prepared that I wanted to lick the plate clean. Having the option of the cheese board to follow, for a small supplement, was also very welcome. Great service from friendly efficient staff. Must remember to come here more often!
A. J.
Everything from the moment we arrived was fab, from the staff, attentive, warm and friendly, to the food, well it was like being in a Michelin star restaurant, the flavours compliment each other so well, bursting in your mouth and a tingle to your lips. My husband and I had a three course meal, we chose different courses and both of us said it was the best food we had eaten in a long time (him being a very picky eater). Thankyou for a wonderful experience, we shall be back soon ❤️❤️❤️
L. W.
Wow. Stunning pies, and huge - I'm a big eater and I'm glad I didn't have a starter! Will be coming back every time I'm in Lincoln.
M. F.
Nice pies but not as good as I expected from the hype. Definitely worth a visit if you want a nice pie, but nothing really special.
B. S.
Fantastic little place with great atmosphere! Their desserts are to die for!
T. A.
Really tasty pies - had the beef and the winter special turkey and cranberry. Just not the friendliest service. I asked for an extra tray to put some chips in for my 3 year old and was told they didn't have any spares. Also wasn't allowed for her to use the toilet either.
S. B.
Takeaway service is amazing! The food is incredible. In the midst of this lockdown if you’re looking for takeaway food that isn’t your usual kebabs and pizza then Browns pie shop is for you. Promptly delivered, amazing quality, piping hot and delicious. Try them out you will not be disappointed!
C.
The pie was nice and the service normal. Honestly, the breads we had for the starter were the best part, they were delicious. It wasn't completely clean and if you're seated downstairs there's a low ceiling on the stairs and you can hear people walking loudly above you. We enjoyed our visit though, and probably would go again if we were in the neighbourhood.
J. J.
Went here for a lunch with family. Very busy, but the staff very attentive . Quickly clearing and setting up a table for us . 3 of our party had pies, different fillings and delicious. Potatoes and veg fresh and hot. 1of our party had the soup, curried roasted parsnip and courgette (l think). This was delicious, served with freshly baked bread. Not disabled friendly due to stairs. Would go again and recommend this restaurant
M. S.
Superb place, probably the best meal the wife and I have had together in 10 years if marriage. Not only the food, but the service was equally excellent, attentive and prompt, friendly but not in your face. Remember, this was on a Saturday evening, the true acid test for any restaurant.
We each had 3 courses of superbly cooked English food plus a very nice bottle of Rose and table water for 80 quid which I consider to be good value. The highlight foodwise for me were the fantastic Lincolnshire Poacher Souffles which we both had.
Tremendous, thoroughly recommended.
G. G. B.
First visit to Brown's Pie Shop, & we weren't disappointed. Delicious pies, & nice dish of vegetables (just the right amount). Certainly didn't need any starters, or desserts. Good friendly service. Busy (Friday evening), but we managed to get the last table - all others were reserved.
We will certainly visit Brown's again, when in Lincoln.
M. H.
The best Cheese Pot Pie I have ever had - broccoli and cheese is an absolute favourite. Hubby's Beef Wellington was fantastic too!
A. R.
Excellent selection of pies all very well made and very tasty. Their Christmas pie with all the trimmings was a very good pie and tasted really nice.
A great selection of starters on the main menu and some extra items on a specials board. This is also the case for mains and deserts.
I've visited a few times and to be honest I don't know why we don't go more often.
C. B.
Arrived on a wet raining Friday night early about six managed to get a table. We had the steak and kidney pie. The pie was excellent best pie I every eaten. Side plate Vegetables were very good disappointed with the mash potato.could of been better but overall the meal was very enjoyable
H. F.
Hard a find a place that does a great pie (that is not a pie top - though they do do this). As a group of 4 we sampled most of the pies on the menu, and then the dessert and it was delicious. The staff were also really friendly. Highly recommended.
S. W. (.
Bought a couple of pies to take home for dinner, a game pie and a lamb pie. My word, we agreed these were the best pies we've ever had, stuffed with lean, tasty meat and flavoursome gravey all wrapped up in top notch pastry.
I wish we were staying in Lincoln as we'd definitely dine there.
I'll be checking if they do mail order.
Outstanding pies!
C. H.
Excellent service, food and beer. Staff very hospitable. Pies very tasty.
H. C.
Fantastic, as always!
Great, cosy atmosphere and brilliant food.
The set menu is brilliant if you're on a budget, the pie of the day never fails to impress with its 4inch puff pastry!
The chef is very flexible for the children as well, yesterday they made us fresh hake fish fingers for our children with no fuss. The service is excellent, it really is.
The desserts, are, wow. The treacle tart is heaven!
N. L.
What an absolutely cute quaint little place full of character and the most delicious pies, chips and veg👌 😋
P. P.
A huge 'Thank you' to all the wonderful staff at Browns for the excellent service and for making our evening most enjoyable. Our party of 11 people ordered from the Early Bird menu which gave us an excellent choice at a terrific price. The dishes were served promptly with everyone enjoying each course ordered. Bravo to the chefs! Consistently delicious food keeps us wanting more!! See you all again soon. Anita

I have eaten at browns pie shop on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed. Its my favourite restaurant and i love its rustic Understated charm. The open capped mushroom starter is amazingly addictive and I also love the rabbit pie. Everything here gets a lovely the taste. The veg that goes with the main meals is a little lacklustre but you hardly notice as the main event is so yummy.
F. I.
Really enjoyed the fish pie
S. B.
Really quite a disappointing experience. The restaurant is tired and looks as if it hasn’t been decorated in years, cracked and peeling paint and not as clean as it should be. As this is one of Lincoln’s historic locations and possesses remarkable architecture, it is truly disappointing that this is the level of quality and cleanliness visitors to the city will be met with.
The menu was particularly heavy with no alternatives to weighty food. The steak and kidney pie was pleasant enough but the vegetables, which were apparently for two people to share, contained one minute sprig of broccoli and six French beans alongside a minute portion of cabbage. The whole place had a very 1970s tired feeling.
Although the staff were friendly, the waitress attempted to clear the table whilst my colleague was actually holding the slice of bread from their starter and about to take a bite!
I will not be recommending this place to my friends.
J. S.
Incredible vegetarian pies! Such a beautiful place for a quick pie and a pint!
R. M.
Absolutely delicious pies. Enormous portions. Staff could not have been more lovely. A must visit restaurant on a trip to Lincoln.
T. B.
This is an absolute gem of the City! Tucked inbetween two other buildings it is easy to miss Brown's Pie Shop but trust me, you'll regret it if you do. The atmosphere of the place itself is lively, without being too much, and the layout is ideal to make sure you can have a conversation over dinner without it being intruded on by others.
The interior is decorated with some really quaint artwork and pieces that are quintessentially Lincplnshire - you'll see the Lincoln Imp in many places. The food starts well with a menu that has enough variety without being overwhelming *spoiler - they don't just serve pies* and once you've ordered you won't be dissapointed.
Top tip: Make sure you look at the specials list and save room for dessert!!
The staff couldn't be more warm, friendly or helpful and really do make your visit that bit more special. Be sure to engage with them about local knowledge and idea in things to do or visit around Lincolnshire but also ask about Humphrey...once they tell you, you'll understand why you should ask 😁
Overall Brown's Pie Shop is one of my favourite places to eat in Lincoln and I would recommend it to everyone to try!
T. C.
This place is great. We were a street walk in (no reservation) and they managed to squeeze us in regardless of the fact you usually have to book. The food on the surface seems rather expensive for a pie however the quality of the ingredients and the size of the dishes make it worthwhile (usually about 15 per head for a pie.) The drinks list is just ok but you won't be stuck for choice. Service was excellent and I would recommend anyone to visit.
P. B.
Lovely food, friendly staff and excellent service. Enjoyed our visit.
A. M.
Our first time visiting browns pie shop and we will be going back again......wow the chef is obviously talented looking at the menu, flavours of foods that compliment each other were a plenty and definitely not shy of offering choices that are different. The place is quite small or cramped but not too small it's a cost place to eat the staff are very friendly too.
M. S.
Great little pie shop right at the top of Steep Hill. They have a lovely variety of pies, traditional like steak and kidney or more modern twists on classics, and daily specials. For most pies you choose whether you want shortcrust or puff as the topper.
Service was excellent and punctual.

good selection of encased, pot pie, and other dishes, all homemade and fresh.
I ate the pulled pork encased pie with sweet potato puree and chips, which also came with selection of seasonal vegetables. I can honestly say it was one of the best pies I'd ever tasted. Very very filling.
A. C.
The staff were really friendly, the service was excellent. I had cider and cheddar soup to start and a Steak and Ale pie for main. Both were fantastic, very tasty and hot. Will definitely go back.
A. C.
Good food but disappointing service.
P. C.
I love pies, this place does great pies, therefore it's a great place for pie lovers, they also stock local beers that compliment their pies adding to the satisfaction value.
C. A.
Went two days running they had early deal 3 courses for about 13 pounds or 2 for 11. Great food from a varied menu that has pie options but so much more. The staff were cheerful and very friendly. Would be my first choice in Lincoln for a quality meal. The prices later are higher later in the evening but even more options.
H. J.
On the go option gives you a chance to have a healthier than average takeaway meal at a good price. Sadly, the staff misjudged how long the wait would be. The food took 25 minutes longer than they said and there was nothing close to an apology from the staff. Courtesy would have remedied all of this, instead I was quite annoyed by the experience!
G. G.
Definitely "NOT" just a pie shop!
I went to the restaurant with my brother, as a Birthday treat.
These were undoubtedly the best pies we have ever tasted. I had a traditional steak, kidney and mushroom, whilst my brother had Rabbit pie, accompanied with a mixed vegetable dish and a choice of mash potato, chips etc.
If you don't have a big petite, or do not fancy a pie, there are plenty of other choices on the menu, and the desert menu is to die for!
There is a wide range of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.
We had to book, and I can now see why; as table space is limited due to the quirky layout of this medieval building, but this quirkiness gives the dining room, a quaint, welcoming, warm, and cosy atmosphere.
We were served by the lovely Emily, and Georgia, who were; professional, warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable. They delivered a relaxed, excellent service.
And at the end of our meal, we found it very reasonably priced.
The service charge was not included, so you have to decide how much to give. We were also, very happy to hear that all of the service charge is given to the serving staff!
My brother and I instantly agreed, that the minimum of 15%, was an absolute starting point, for such attentive, wonderful service!
What a beautiful jewel in the Lincolnshire crown. A marvellous, family run restaurant, which we cannot recommend highly enough!
Not to be missed if you get the chance, easily 5 star........
D. B.
Great friendly service and food, ordered the Sunday lunch to be delivered as a treat for my dad and brother. They were really impressed with the quality and quantity. Definitely recommend and order again.
N. S.
Love this restaurant have been visiting for over 20 years. Friendly staff and lovely environment. Food is delicious too.
S. T.
Not my first visit to this well established restaurant. As always it didn't disappointing.Fantastic pies and the staff are super friendly.
L. S.
Awesome food and I advise you go! Friendly service and a warm and cosy feel to the restaurant!! Only downer is that every time we go we try and order the 'RABBIT PIE' and it is literally never available. Please either order more for your loving customers or just take it off the menu. Other than that I love this place
j.
Had the fish pie. Was amazing - lovely big hunks of salmon, beautiful parsley sauce and the topping of mash and cheddar was superb. Staff very friendly and attentive, service prompt and place very cosy.
L.
Hot, stuffy and claustrophobic. Even the small pies are too big, and they're too salty. The food is perfectly adequate and a cut above most, but in a field where the competition isn't great, either. The menu is dull and lacks imagination. The are so many mediocre easy-meal places now that Browns needs to up it's game. It's better than most, but at the end of the day it's still pub grub. They need to improve the air conditioning and provide fresher meals to stay ahead of a very crowded market.
G. W.
Have managed to call in around Christmas for several years now. The food is hearty and tasty with some decent drinks to match.
Black pudding poached egg was a starter this year and if you have the chance I recommend it!
Some pies are occasionally sold out but there has always been a tasty alternative.
A cosy pace to dine with some fab food on offer.
T.
Everything about this place is superb. The starters were amazing also the beef Wellington was to die for. It has a nice traditional cosey atmosphere and would recommend it to anybody. We left with a full stomach and a smile on our faces =]
D. L.
Great food (we had the Lamb, Chicken and Game pies) and yummy desserts (panna cotta, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate tart). The service was a little on the slow side, but the great company made the time go quickly. Lots of extra drinks on bill, but an honest mistake that was quickly put right.
R. F.
Great pies! We had one full pastry encased and the other with just a pastry lid - both amazing. Good service. Will definitely go again.
A.
Absolutely wonderful shop, best pies around and famous chairman puddings are worth searching out. If it's not Browns, it's not Pie.
V. L.
Love the Beef Wellington, it is always the same, tasty, freshly cooked and beautifully presented. Service is always excellent and the restaurant is really atmospheric especially in the basement😁
K. B.
Amazing Guinness pie with mash and vegetables here. You must try the pastry topped pie dish with Guinness. Friendly atmosphere. Good selection of deserts. Fully licensed.
S. M.
Great location and pies were great,
H. F.
The food was top notch, my hake & asparagus in a prawn sauce with peas and potatoes was absolutely out of this world and my husband was bowled over with his delicious venison, black cherry & sweet potato pie with mash and seasonal vegetables - the flavours!!
If you come to Lincoln, you have to put Browns Pie Shop right at the top of your list of places to eat.
J. S.
Nice charming place, but slow service
Food is tasty
B. D.
Good ambience, good pies but would prefer light puff pastry crust. Good efficient friendly staff.
S. D.
Fabulous pies ! Especially with a pint of the best ale! It’s a must when you visit Lincoln.
D. G.
Fantastic pies the best you’ll have in your life , desserts and starters are first class, reasonable prices, the staff are all brilliant.
An absolute must if your in the bailgate visiting the cathedral / castle area
P. R.
Booked online but when we arrived didn't have the booking but no problem still go a table and a choice of tables, friendly and good service, the food was lovely would go back.
S. B.
Traditional English food at its very best. Superb tasting pies and desserts. I will return!!!
S. B.
Nice atmosphere here and lovely food served by attentive staff with a fun sense of humour but it's just a little cramped really and the seats are soooo hard certainly puts you off stopping too long (maybe that's the cunning plan!!) But as I say it does serve nice food!
L. F.
Amazing amazing amazing.
Just Go really Just Go.
C. H.
Best game pie ever. Lovely staff and atmosphere. Great value for money.
C. T.
Food was excellent staff very friendly and helpful
J. O.
Came here for a birthday, been a few times before. Always a nice atmosphere and plenty of food choices. Would always advise to pre book as can get busy especially at weekends. Service is always quick and friendly.
T. M.
Went here in the summer as heard so much about this fantastic pie shop. I ordered their famous pie and was sooo disappointed when what i got was a dish with some sloppy casserole in it and a pastry crust on top which looked like bought pastry not homemade. I was expecting a pie as in party top bottom and sides. Wouldn't waste my time goin again although they did do amazing sweet potato soup
b. p.
me and the wife just had steak and ale pie, veg and mash with pudding
all of which was great, My thanks to the pie shop staff for a polite prompt service well done
S. B.
Absolutely beautiful flavoursome food. The pies are.amazing. well done chef. Food came out quickly. Bread was amazing. Very friendly staff. Very nice evening thankyou
M. B.
Wonderful food and service. Small, long building with more seating in a cellar, try not to eat down there though unless you have no sense of smell. Incense is burnt to mask the odour in the cellar.
The pies are something to go back again for !
K. h.
Great food! You also get the choice between pastry lid or totally encased pie...
Busy, but service was good and the food well worth the wait.
S. 4.
I wasn't impressed, trades on its past glory.
P. R.
My family and I have been there a few times and it has always been good quality and great food. Although it may be expensive, its definitely worth it in every way. I just feel sorry for the waiting staff who have to climb the steep stairs every time they want to go to the kitchen :)
D. F.
Terrific 2 course specials meal. Game pie was the best part for me
G. V.
Excellent quality for dining in! we really enjoyed it being so traditional and will definately go back soon!
J. H.
The food was excellent, it was cold in the cellar however and overall it was extremely expensive, even for good food.
M. P.
Beautiful PIE and MASH at this place - fresh as anything
Currently craving another, and would definitely visit again when next in Lincoln
C.
This should be one of a must restaurant in Lincoln. Everything is more than i expect. Love the pulled pork most even i dont eat pork when i cook at home. Staffs are so nice and lovely tho. Couldnt expect more for a dinner.
S. C.
Incredible. Absolutely wonderful food and a great location. Would strongly recommend it - but don't have a big starter unless you're really hungry, you don't want to leave any pie!!
S. N.
Friendly service, they DO have a kids menu (although it wasn't "kiddie" food, it was just smaller portions of the adult food- pie, sausages etc. However, they also agreed to provide my 4 year old some fish fingers when he decided it was the only thing he fancied eating.
We ordered the "pie of the day" from the tea time set menu, which according to the main menu was supposed to be in shortcrust pastry. It turned out to be a pot pie with a puff pastry lid (a poor substitute for shortcrust in my opinion) and the filling was incredibly, blisteringly hot. I would have liked to decant it onto my plate to allow it to cool a little bit, but I couldn't even lift the dish off my plate without burning my fingers. It was tasty though, and the accompanying veg was lovely.
D. L.
Well worth a visit, very nice lamb pie. Staff were really helpful. Visited when very busy (Xmas market) and got put at a table in the cellar which was cramped and very warm so would make sure got a table at street level if going again.
A. C.
Excellent service and amazing food. Would definitely recommend.
S. B.
Always great food! Best pies I've had ever, staff always friendly and helpful. A must visit when in Lincoln. Desserts are awesome.
n. b.
I had beef Sunday dinner...it was amazing, so many flavours cooked to perfection...thanks for having us!
J. D.
Arrived by chance. The best lamb pie ever! Staff friendly and helpful . A good experience which got our visit to Lincoln from Hertfordshire off to an excellent start.
P. R.
Great variety of traditional pies, a nice place in the hearth of Lincoln
T. H.
Had the pie of the day (Pork, Cider, Apples) it was amazing. The puff pastry was so light and wonderful. Also the cheese souffle was one of my favorites.
D. J.
Just had the browns pie take away special and was very impressed with the food and with the collection from start to finish
Will be back again
A. D.
A fabulous experiance. Really good quality honest meals with a homely feel. Would recomend the rabit pie, its a perfect introduction to rabit if you have never tried it before. Also good veggie options too with plenty of choice especially if you eat fish too. Quirky old building adds to the character.
A. W.
Always popular with locals & tourists alike.
A very cosy and friendly restaurant with moderately priced food , friendly service and good sized portions.
Mind you head if you are seated in the cellar dining area!
K. T.
Great food and staff, good atmosphere
c. p.
Really nice pies here but be warned, they are very filling.
S. L.
As good as hoped for...only improvement would be less stodgy mash otherwise all very good!
n. J.
Bought a game pie as a takeaway. Absolutely lovely. Will definitely visit them again
B. T.
It is `bijou`, pleasantly rustic and totally charming for it. Then there is the setting - just off Castle Square in Lincoln`s Bailgate. Wow!
All of that would be to naught of course if the food was not up to scratch. But it is!
There is always a great selection of Pies of course (and the Rabbit Pie - Mmm!) but there is also an excellent and varied menu in addition - accompanied by a good selection of carefully prepared vegetables too.
Damn! I also find the sweet-board irresistible.
My bottom line is simple. If I had to recommend a restaurant to someone new to Lincoln, then Brown`s would be my unequivocal first choice.
R. R.
Good pies. Avoid the basement for seating. Very chilly and moist. Smells like mold and has mold on the basement walls. But the food was great.
S. H.
Never fails you. Amazing choice and amazing food locally sourced. Superb and a lovely place with bags of character. Staff attentive and friendly.
W. P.
If I'm in Lincoln, then this is a place I'm always going to visit. Great food, great service and it's not too expensive either. Highly recommend giving it a try if you're in the area.
A. M.
Steak and kidney pie with buttered potatoes...absolutely terrific. If I was really really picky, there is only 1 option for Rose wine on an otherwise superb menu.
J. M.
Exactly food and service
T. _. (.
Amazing pies and starters, well worth a visit !
S. P.
Really nice food, but large party had to eat the down stairs, bit like a cellar, very small ,very hot ,not ideal, worth a visit tho but book upstairs
r. c.
Lovely homely food on a very wet night just what we needed. Great pies full of tasty filling highly recommend
e. m.
A Lincoln must. Located almost between the cathedral and the castle. The fully enclosed pie is the way to go but their Wellington is excellent.
B. C.
I have just tried one of their famous pies and the sticky toffee pudding. They blew up my mind, I'm repeating for sure!
M. P.
Really enjoyed my pie and chips, thought it was a bit pricey hence the 3 stars. Staff were excellent and very efficient.
M. G.
Excellent in every respect. An absolute must visit if you ever go to Lincoln.
D. T.
My 1st visit last night and certainly won’t be my last. Everything from the staff to the food was brilliant. Would highly recommend.
J. J.
What a great independent place to eat in. Tried the haslet which was delicious. I'd recommend to anyone visiting Lincoln.
L. L. M.
Wonderful pies Did not have pudding as we were so full after the pies Staff were extremely friendly and efficient Every time we visit Lincoln we have to eat here as it is so good
Q. H.
First time at the pie shop today :( My steak and kidney pie was absolutely vile, it tasted of very strong urine and I couldn't eat it at all so I left the whole thing. I have never before had such a strong kidney smell or flavour from a pie before it was the worst pie I have ever had in my life.
I know you have to expect a little kidney twang to it but this was terrible and others in my party agreed, the smell was overpoweringly of urine. The pastry was terrible too, obviously shop bought shortcrust I can do better myself. The vegetables were too hard, a little al dente they were not. We will not be eating here again. I was so disappointed.
To be fair they took my food away and offered me something else but I couldn't get rid of the urine smell so refused, so they deducted my drink from the bill. Should have deducted the whole meal though in my opinion. My husband had the chicken and leek pie and that was bland and nothing to write home about, the chicken was dry and no flavour... sorry but that's our opinion.
A. H.
Always a great meal, few things a little different from my last visit but still fantastic atmosphere, food and friendly staff.
J. B.
Nice place quite next to the cathedral. Visit after a ghost tour around the city and watch out for Humphrey the ghost... Game pie was tasty
T. B.
Amazing food and great service, highly recommend a visit, only down side, stairs and small spaces so not for wheelchairs, but still a lovely place.
A. C.
A Lincoln legend. Wonderfully quaint, great selection of pies with some unusual and tasty combinations. Good service with a smile.
K. S.
Fantastic place,great staff,tasty pies .
G. C.
Great tradicional English food. Best ever pies and lovely puddings if you manage to have room..

P. R.
Lovely food and atmosphere. Friendly service, just make sure you like pies.
P. D.
Dragged in by the dog for a drink on a rainy day, I wished I was hungry as the pies and sausages looked really good!
P. W.
I have eaten here in the past and the food was superb. I have recently changed my diet to vegetarian and am unsure if they serve vegetarian options here so alas haven't visited in approx 12 months
c. b.
Looks nothing from the outside but the pies are amazing . A bit pricey but well worth it..!!
C. T.
They were closed at 17.11hrs on Sunday afternoon, when Google said they would be open. A floopin long journey for nothing. Its not the first time Google has got its opening hours wrong!

For something that calls itself a pie shop the pies ain't all that the steak was a bit fatty but the staff were helpful and attentive.
