Reviews of Newcastle City Library

A good place to read a book or work on your laptop, away from the hassle of the city centre. It is ‘more than perfect’ place to socialise - I have always met friendly people who like to chat.
There are:
1. A coffee shop with limited options (good enough though);
1. three-hour computer access; and
2. printing and photocopying
However, the City Library is rather limited in terms of borrowing books.

I love this library. It's so airy and spacious with 5 floors for different activities. There are plenty of computers to use, and some for standing if you need to just do a quick online search rather than log in for a mostly-needed seat-based computer. There are a great range of books and there is the facility to renew your books online with your library card number and PIN code. There is so much more to discover and explore on the website for activities and services you might need to use so check it out! 🙂👍🏽

Such a great library. There's usually a free computer, which is great, because it means not having to lug my laptop around. There are quiet spots if you need to concentrate and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Great space to study however staff can be rude. This library is supposed to close at 7pm and I have been rudely asked to leave at 6.45pm! This is less than ideal when you cannot study at home.

I preferd the old central library, call me old fashioned but I like libraries with books and silence. This modern interpretation of a library is part creche with screaming children, plus I don't like sharing a space with the city's drug addicts. My heart goes out to any students trying to study and to general members of the public who just want some peace and quiet to read and relax.

The two security staff at the door were really lovley but the two staff at the enquiry desk were not very helpful or polite, they had an attitude like I was being a pest for asking a question, they are not in the right job.

Regularly use the IP & business support resources, always very useful, great staff and world class facilities

The library is second to known. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Went for the biometric service. The staff are so helpful and so polite they are a credit to Newcastle as a whole. Couldn't be more helpful.

Quiet place for reading and study on floor 4 and 6.

Good for reading books, learn about the history of the city.

Lovely building and has so many floors with different purposes on each floor. The bottom floor has a great part if you need to study quietly and privately, which is good for students. This place is great if you need to kill time too because you can find a book and sit in one of the many seats they have. There are different seating, like more casual if you would like to do casual reading for fun or seats and tables if you need to read and study at the same time. Very useful a relaxing place in general.
It is so interesting too! Especially the top floor! Pop in to find out more!

The library is actually very big and nice. The only problem, in my opinion, is that it closes so soon (some days at 5pm). I have to find a place in this city where I can stay working till later hours

iced coffee pua shan too milky not happy

Nice modern airy building, great staff but what’s the point without the stock or opening hours that let people access it. Recent budget cuts have cut library hours, so Mon, Weds, Friday the library now closes at 5:00 pm (4:00 Saturdays) and is now also closed all day on Sunday (all as of 1st April 2019] so more difficult to access after work etc.
Book stock is a bit tired. Couldn’t find a single book that had been published within the last 6 months, especially in fiction.

Quite and we'll maintained. There is visa appointment biometrics center inside as well. Well managed by staff. Staff is very friendly.

Nice place but no quite areas. Can be quite distracting working during the day. Also, very short working hours during the weekend and on Fridays.

It's well organised place and always people are there to help

Great new building. Very bright and high quality study environment and facilities. Good book collection. Efficient management. Friendly and helpful staff. Good quality internet access. Very popular with students.

Excellent public resource full of books/dvds/computers and local resources you can search. The shop has interesting books about local history. Cafe is lovely with helpful staff, lovely coffee and lots of food choices including gluten /dairy free options. The hand cut chips are lovely.
The only downsides are the same for all public resources - difficulties keeping the toilets clean (on the ground floor) and also, without wanting to sound mean, no choice of who sits next to you. Usually it's a great place to work and read but you the most disruptive groups are the people who use it as a meeting place for chatting, whether that be the youngsters or the other groups that congregate here.
A more regular clean of the toilets on the ground floor would help I think. And if you're a girl in your own, try to sit on a table with other girls to avoid being ogled.

Nice people some work there.

Knowledgeable and polite staff who are always eager to help. I imagine each day can bring new and sometimes bizarre enquiries from the general public, so the team at Newcastle City Library really deserve a medal!
I visited yesterday, and I was really impressed by how quickly and efficiently the friendly lady on the library staff helped me to get an updated "barcode" library card. Within moments I had my new card in hand (along with a handy smaller card to attach to my keyring) and was using the self-service machine to check-out books. You can print the receipt too, a helpful reminder of the due date to pin on your fridge.
The library also provides a hub for many of Newcastle's advice-giving services.
On the lower ground floor there's a great selection of non-fiction titles, as well as some interesting items for sale if you're looking for a gift for a local history enthusiast.
The next floor has a nice little cafe which is a perfect place for a quick snack for library users or shoppers.
Level 3 contains large-print works of fiction, classics, sci-fi (a particularly excellent range), children's books, and even some works in foreign languages such as Mandarin.
The top floor at the moment has a great little exhibition celebrating the history of the Jewish community in the North East.

I am a adult with mild autism. And other various problems.. I have come to this libary for decent few years now. It can get loud n there but that's the story for most places for me. So it's fine with some earphones in :)
Staff for the most part have been extremy friendly. There printers print a very high quality for the price you pay (even with the increase I still say it is good value. Ink is expensive)
They can offer you a quieter computer area to work on as floor 4 can be quite packed and loud at times.
It has a beautiful veiw out on the city if you sit in there chair space by the window. Very tranquil.
If there is a problem staff are allways happy to help and very approachable. . (Coming from somone who can be extremely shy) ...
For libary goers with autism or related conditions , they have sound cancellation ear defenders to block out sound. They also provide a antibacterial wipe to clean them first. There are sitting spaces on the 3rd floor (not checked other floors) with a high backed end of the chair and high covering sides to offer a small amount of privacy to de escalate or unwind from sensory overload. only fault I see with It it is right amungst the children play area/I often see little kids climbing onto it. Still I think it is a great move ffrom a very disabling world. We are not the disabled it is the world that disables us. Places like this provide that inclusion and awareness to help pepole like me or like somone else be able to be like everyone else. And that's great.
......
So yes ! I would not doubt this place for onr second. This is a libary you need to go try out !
:)

The Newcastle Library is a very good place for anyone who wants to go and learn or just simply have some peace and quiet. The library is 6 floors and contains 1000's of books available. The library also provides useful tools for those who are trying to research the archives for the history of Newcastle or for even their own heritage and ancestry. The only issues I found were some of the staff were a little impolite and not the most easy to approach. I recommend you also reserve a computer in advance as the computers were all in use and when I got a computer it automatically logged me out because somebody had quickly made a reservation online.

A fantastic library and was extremely useful before Google. It's a really nice building so credit to the architect and builders on this one. It's nice being able to get away from it all and relax reading the huge array of books. Also a good one to get some children's books. Keep visiting people and support it.

Newcastle library staff, are working in challenging conditions. Even though services are restricted at this time, the library is open. Dedication to duty!

The previous library building on this site was an concrete eyesore, part of a 60s redevelopment of this block which included the pearl further up and princess square an ugly precinct style shopping square. The whole area is long past its sell by date and should be gone. This library has been rebuilt and its excellent. It features a spectacular atrium entrance with glass lifts to the six floors and a viewing box overhanging the building which could have been a mistake, but this one allows views up to the monument. This library and the laing art gallery over the road are the main attractions in this area.
H. Y. C.
I would highly recommend the top floor to do your own work and study. It offers brilliant city view and the quietness moments maximize your productivity. A second best choice while you want sometimes want to get away from the busy school/ university library.
R. T.
This library is incredible! Four floors of literature (amongst other media) in a brilliant looking and peaceful environment. With facilities such as a children's area and reading booths, this library is definitely worth a visit.

Newcastle library's is one of my favourite meeting places the books have a good selection for everyone if you live in Newcastle you can have a library card free to take out books. Free internet is available for two hours. If you want inside information on Newcastle there is some great reads on the third floor. There is a place to eat and toilets are available. there are lifts to take people from floor to floor so great for disabled people too.

Lovely place. We used to come here with my girls on Sundays. We love the area for kids. Very sad to see the new opening times though. Not as convenient as it used to be for working parents.
H. N.
Great library, good place to work and relax. Just a shame some of the people who use it are mostly noisy teens. Parking is all paid unless you walk ages.

Library great.Just one quibble about the caffe my wife ordered cheese jacket potato having been told it was gluten free but when it arrived it clearly had some kind of coating(usually put on to stop cheese sticking together). She queried this with the staff but was told it was only grated cheese.Didnt dare risk eating it so left it!

A fantastic library and place to sit! It's by far one of the biggest in the Tyne & Wear area, and it's the perfect place to chill away from the busy town centre.

Much better than we have in the public sector wasteland that is Hampshire.
Visitors to this library are welcomed rather than being treated as an inconvenience .
Newcastle can be justifiably proud of the.library service
